It's been a rough week for Two Strike Noise. Bad news regarding the future of the Oakland A's has brought the show down but we shall persist! We've got some numbers regarding the A's and relocation as well as their pitch staff (or guys on the mound trying to pitch?). We imagine a Major League reboot, discuss MLB continuing to tinker with new rules, see a new HBP record and ofcourse have to talk all thing Nootbaar. We rip a couple of 1988 Topps packs in this week's Wax Pack Heroes and come up with a science joke that clearly went over Mark's head.. Don't forget, you can leave us a message at 607-216-8811. Happy Holidays from Two Strike Noise. Our gift to you is…another Tales from the Dugout episode! And there is no gift receipt so you can't return it. This week we go hard, for the off-season. Which Tom Emanski hat does Fred McGriff choose? We check the short list of MLB players from New Hampshire (it's quick) and look at numbers if everybody played at Coors field throughout baseball history. In our main segment we chronicle the man who is thought to be the grand father of the knuckleball, Toad Ramsey. His story was made for Two Strike Noise, childhood injury, drinks alot, played while is disguise after being kicked out of a game…only two of those things are true but they could all happen to him. While we wait for MLB to start, the NPB already has & Big Boss is already making waves. The rule no baseball fans likes returns for another season, while another that we like is put in place. In our main story we talk about John Lowenstein, a swiss army knife on the field and one of the great jokers off it. We recap some of his greatest hits & put him on the short list for Two Strike Noise sainthood. In Wax Pack Heroes, another couple of packs of 2000 Topps. This week the worlds of MLB & KPop collide with a good dose of sideburns. We remember some players who have passed recently as well as Honus Wagner's awesome brother (who also passed but along time ago). Yet another celebrity jumps on the Two Strike Noise bandwagon on social media & we discuss ESPN's rankings of best uniforms. Moe Drabowsky had a 17 year career in MLB, won two World Series rings with the Orioles and was a big league pitching coach for several years. But he might best be known as the Polish Prince of Pranks. Snakes, prank calls from the bullpen and the master of the hot foot. We don’t ever want to hear people complain about baseball games taking too long. In 1981 the Rochester Red Wings and Pawtucket Paw Sox decided that 9 innings was not enough for them. It took 33 innings (and a couple of months) for a winner to be declared. Future Hall of Famers Cal Ripken Jr. and Wade Boggs were amongst the players who played the equivalent of 3+ games without a break! Long at bats, famous first last names, barber shop quartets, strange Topps products, Cheese steak champions and secretly living in a baseball stadium. Before Jim Abbott, there was Hugh Daily. He was a fiery, one handed, Irishman who was one of the first pitchers to throw over hand. The biggest problem with having Hugh on your team though was, nobody liked him. His penchant for causing a train wreck mixed with striking out batters made him popular with fans, but much less so with his teammates. Plus we cover more Adam Ottovino fan-fiction written by Adam himself regarding his new team, we find out why Jim Kaat was such a great fielding pitcher and we take on some of the blandest Donruss cards ever in Wax Pack Heroes but make them as exciting as a no hitter in the ninth. Horace Fogel was a failed politician, failed manager & failed owner. How bad was he? He tried to convert a young Christy Mathewson into a first baseman. Despite all of his misfires he continued to be involved in baseball until he pushed too far, dealing in late 1800’s Qanon-like baseball conspiracy theories. Bad enough were these falsehoods that they landed him in very rare company, banned from baseball for life. Plus Seinfeld-baseball trivia & Jeff finds his people, The Society for the Preservation of Barbershop Quartet Singing who coincidentally came up with some great names for the then Houston expansion team. The 1981 MLB season was known for two things, a strike and Fernando-mania. Dodger fans went crazy for a 20 year old, left-handed screwballer who captured the interest of the Latin fan base of LA as well as the Rookie of the Year & the Cy Young! There were songs written about him, cereal boxes with his face on them & strikeouts. Lots of them. We talk everything El Toro. Talk of taking the bat out of the pitcher’s hands goes all the way back to the late 1800’s. So why do we still have two leagues with different rules? We’ll walk through all the iterations and arguments for and against the designated hitter this week as well as touch on baseball player home security, Storm Davis’ origin story, the 1976 A’s literally running a mile ahead of the Twins and Wax Pack Heroes with some 1987 & 1990 Fleer cards. Rickey Henderson Hall of Fame artifacts now presented by Two Strike Noise! We’ll tell you where to see them. We start our search for the most Wax Pack Hero-ish additional scoring card. More tales from the dugout this week as we remember the Astros want to remind you to update those passwords, Bernie the Brewer was a real, beer-swelling, lederhosen-wearing, camper-on-top-of-the-scoreboard-living Brewers fan for five months and baseball insults that cut. The baseball podcast crossover event of the new year continues. This week the Baseball Beyond Batting Average Podcast joins us to go over the 1990 season in the American League. It was a wild year from Dave Stewart’s jock strap, Steve Lyon’s pants (or lack of), a lot of no-hitters and a pair of Griffey’s. Mark and Andy help us take a look at the best & worst from each team & the award winners. Plus, we open a 1990 Upper Deck pack with the BBBA guys, where will they land on our guest leaderboard? In this episode, Jim and Adam open two packs of '91 Fleer Baseball cards, and marvel at how terrible their luck is. The segment was heavily inspired by our friends at Two Strike Noise. If you don't follow them already, check them out!
Mark and Andy are joined by Mark and Jeff from the Two Strike Noise podcast to create a foursome of podcasticness never seen before. The topic? The 1990 baseball season, a subject so nice they had to record it twice. While the National League portion of the season is discussed here, the AL happenings will be discussed on a subsequent episode of Two Strike Noise. Here, your hosts cover the stats and the stories, from the dominance of Lenny Dykstra to Roseanne's memorable national anthem rendition. Each NL team gets discussed, as does the good, bad, and ugly of every position. The episode wraps up with an intense round of Roll The Stat, the first time four players have battled on air.
The 1990’s was awash with what seemed like hundreds of different brands of baseball cards. Brands needed something that made them stand out and be more collectible than others. In 1996 Pinnacle came up with just such an idea. Covergirl model and owner of a red Ferrari in National Lampoon’s Vacation, Christie Brinkley. Brinkley worked with Atlanta and Cleveland (who had faced off in the World Series the previous season) to create unique cards that are some of the few to actually still hold value today. To celebrate out 100th episode, we crack a couple of packs of Upper Deck for Wax Pack Heroes and they do not disappoint. New year, new history. We start it off right by comparing prices on Cameo and try to figure out why Hall of Famers are so undervalued on the platform. Real important stuff. Christopher Fredrick Wilhelm von der Ahe might have one of the longest names in baseball history. He never picked up a bat or threw a ball but he was one of early baseballs most important owners. He pioneered the fan experience in ways that are still around today. He also wore spats on his shows, always traveled with his 2 greyhounds and changed managers at a pace that would make George Steinbrenner blush. Finally we start the new year off with something that has never happened before in Wax Pack Heroes. Just imagine never collecting a single paycheck, your entire life, that you didn’t earn from baseball? That was the dream life that Don Zimmer got the chance to live. From player, to coach, to manager to baseball legend. The man with the face only a mother could love spent 66 years in the game, he wore uniforms for more teams than he didn’t. This week we talk about all facets of his career, from the metal screws in his head to the Boys of Zimmer. Plus we look to break to deadlock in season two of Wax pack Heroes with a couple of packs of 1989 Topps. Chickens in the outfield, bags of flour dropping on the infield from above and fewer pictures of all of this than of Bigfoot. We’ll get to the bottom of this Dodger Field mystery. Plus chicks dig the long ball. If that’s true, Joe Bauman must have been very popular in the Longhorn League. Joe put together what might be the best season in the history of baseball in 1954. Babe Ruth, Roger Maris, even Mark McGwire could not equal the 138 game totals Joe put up for the Roswell Rockets. We’ll share all the gaudy numbers. Finally, 6-year MLB veteran Wes Chamberlain (Phillies & Red Sox) joins us for a round of Wax Pack Heroes. Where will he land on our leader board and just how many Hall of Famers can one pack contain? This week we talk about Wade Boggs losing the International League batting title on the last game of the season because of some very questionable tactics by the other team, who just happened to have the guy who was in second place. Also, more stories involving baseball and lightning (it’s a thing apparently for us lately), the history of the Athletics elephant mascot and how many different names does the eeuphus pitch have? Finally, in Wax Pack Heroes we take on a couple of packs of 1987 Topps and learn about alot of second careers some players had in the off season. I have something special for Phillies fans to begin the show. I discuss the frustration I had with the Braves, last week. Ian Anderson's amazing first career start, plus more baseball chat. I remember actor Chadwick Boseman and play an audio clip of him discussing his role as Jackie Robinson. I'm then joined by Jeff, from the Two Strike Noise podcast. We talk about his time working at Turner Field and some of the interactions he had with the players, plus we discuss a lot more about our love for the history of baseball. Twitter-@High_And_Inside

This week we reveal our baseball pet peeves, Shoeless Joe & pitchers winning batting titles? We go in depth on the very brief existence of the West Coast Negro Baseball Association, a league with the best intentions & backing that never really found a foothold. This week we talk about fishy HR’s, players born at sea and Oyster Burns. Definitely a bit of a nautical theme. Plus, Bob Aspromonte, a light hitting member of the Colt .45’s who is befriended by a young boy in the hospital. In a baseball tale as old as time, a bed ridden fan asks their favorite player to hit them a home run. What happened after that was beyond anything Babe Ruth or Paul O’Neill could fathom. Everyone has a favorite baseball podcast. Our favorite show is 'Two Strike Noise'. Mark and Jeff first worked together while working for the Seattle Mariners. Both had a hand in what the fans and players saw on the scoreboard at Mariners home games. During games they'd talk about the history of the game and make each other laugh. It seemed like a natural fit to start recording. We talk through their journey, about their show and whole bunch of nonsense.
We continue our conversation with former Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Don August. Don has had some crazy adventures playing baseball all over the world. This week we cover life outside Major League Baseball including his time playing ball in Mexico and Taiwan. Tom Sturdivant spent 10 years pitching in Major League Baseball for several different teams, but his greatest success came while he was with the New York Yankees. Jackie Robinson broke the baseball color line when he started at first base for the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947. When the Dodgers signed Robinson, they heralded the end of racial segregation in professional baseball that had relegated black players to the Negro leagues since the 1880s......but what if Branch Rickey signed "Cool Papa" Bell to the St. Louis Cardinals in 1924? How would this signing change the game...the nation? Do other teams start to sign players like Satchel Paige later Josh Gibson? Listen today as Mark A. Johnston and Jeff Paulson of Two Strike Noise podcast along with Thee Doctor and PUG will explore this what if in history. About Two Strike Noise podcast:Do you love baseball stories and history? That's what we're all about. Two Strike Noise is a weekly broadcast that is ALL about baseball. We do some fun segments and tell you all about a couple of baseball subjects, from ancient times to recent history. All with our own bit of strange humor and commentary. Hosts Jeff Paulson and I discuss subjects from The House of David to Albert Bele's "Batgate" to the history of uniform numbers.Mark A Johnston, started in baseball as a bat boy for the AAA Tacoma Tigers in the late 1980's before outgrowing his uniform and moving upstairs into production. From their he got his call to the big leagues and the Seattle Mariners where he has been working in their control room for more than 2 decades. He has been known to fill in on the stadium organ in a pinch and is considered the class clown of the control room. Jeff started his career in sports production before being offered the opportunity to sit behind home plate for the Atlanta Braves and basically watch baseball and then later hockey and basketball. That job took him around the country working for various teams including the Mariners where he and Mark first met. He now resides in northern California working remotely for teams across the country in between attending games at baseball's last dive bar, the Oakland Coliseum home of his beloved Oakland A's.AppleInstagramTwitter Find out more about History's What If PodcastWebsiteFacebookInstagramTwitter
