Click here to become a patron of the show. It's about time I got around to covering the Talking Heads, don't you think? Weirdly, a lot of their material is kind of under-researched, unless you're willing to do deep dives into the biographies and such. However, that seems to be loosening up in recent years as more people get nostalgic about the 1980s. And now I'm realizing that that's like my grandparents being nostalgic for World War 2. Anyway, that, I think, is why I was able to find a decent amount of material for this song. It was the Heads' first single and the one that encouraged David Byrne to keep on keeping on. Because, while it didn't chart huge in the US (peaking at Number 92 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart), it gave him the understanding that there was, in fact, an audience out there for his rather peculiar musical style. And, as promised, here's a video of the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain performing their version of this song in 2009. Stay with it, it's pretty cool. I am NOT, on the other hand, going to link you to "Psycho Chicken." You can find that one on your own. You have been warned. Click here for a transcript of this episode.

When Ewan Dalton was my guest on Episode 16 he said "You HAVE to get Dave Stewart on to the show" and I'm really glad I took his advice. Dave was the Librarian at Microsoft UK and that's where we first met, but in Dave's own words he enjoyed work, but it was never a priority. What is and always has been a priority and a passion, from an early age, is music : listening to it watching it live, reading about it, writing it, and playing it. In December 2013 Dave went, with his brother, to see the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain. Despite what we think most gigs aren't life changing, but this one was. For Christmas Dave got a ukulele and never looked back. In 2017 he quit corporate life to focus fully on teaching and playing the ukulele and is now part of four different bands. During lock down Dave did manage to do some stuff with a couple of those bands but , having never played a solo show before, he decided he would do that and stream it. By show three it had become a pretty sophisticated set up as we discuss in this episode and it really is one of the best, most fun, music things I have watched in lock down. You can watch it here:https://www.facebook.com/watch/live/?v=259086572073700&ref=watch_permalink Dave has an encyclopaedic knowledge of music and it was no surprise that his playlist is the biggest yet and whilst i have no measure of this I also think it’s the most eclectic and wide ranging. To give you one example of what I am talking about in this episode Dave introduced me to a band who only write songs about cricket (The Duckworth Lewis Method) and another that only write about Baseball (The Baseball Project) . The great thing is i have listened to both bands and they are both really good.as is this episode. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. You can listen to Dave's playlist with 59 songs on it here (Please Cut & paste the link into your browser} https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6EtVDWLcBTAei3q4xs7Szk?si=tq9f10DhQZKWnlNyxXenZw

Peter Scharf is a British pensioner living in the rural Le Marche in Italy.  He spent many years working in finance in the old City of London whilst running a sheep farm at the same time. His interest in music was sparked late in life by a fateful visit to a NY music store and a desire to trace back to the origins of finger-picked acoustic blues of the 1920's, 30's and 40's. The two largest download sites for musical instrument teaching material are: Homespun.com - run by Happy Traum, an accomplished fingerpicker who played on a few Bob Dylan tracks on the early records. The site covers all kinds of instruments including the ukulele. guitarvideos.com - run by Stefan Grossman who has pioneered the teaching of early blues acoustic guitar to thousands of would be fingerpickers throughout the world. The site is mostly concentrated on the guitar but also has ukulele material. An excellent online store specializing in ukuleles is southernukulelestore.co.uk. They have a great selection of ukuleles from £40/50 to £2000+. The sweet spot in terms of ukulele beginner spending is probably around £80 to £120. They also write a blog and a good one for beginners is southernukulelestore.co.uk/blog/best-10-ukulele-sites-beginners/ YouTube is a vast ukulele source with hundreds of sites dedicated to teaching the ukulele. Other internet sites are: ukulele underground ukulele hunt got a ukulele, and there are many, many more which a google search will reveal. Check out The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain on https://www.ukuleleorchestra.com/ (and also on YouTube) if you look for inspiration and an idea of what the ukulele can do.

Libby Purves meets Si King and Dave Myers - also known as the Hairy Bikers; illustrator Michael Foreman; The Honorable Lady Alexandra Shackleton, granddaughter of Sir Ernest Shackleton and George Hinchcliffe with the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain. Lady Alexandra Shackleton is the granddaughter of Sir Ernest Shackleton. Sir Ernest set up the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, a cross-continent trek that came to be known as the Endurance mission. Endurance departed in August 1914 and by January 1915 it had already become trapped in the Antarctic ice. Two exhibitions document the story - Enduring Eye: The Antarctic Legacy of Sir Ernest Shackleton and Frank Hurley is at the Royal Geographical Society and By Endurance We Conquer: Shackleton and his Men is at the Polar Museum which is part of The Scott Polar Research Institute. The Royal Geographical Society is in Kensington, London and the Polar Museum is based in Cambridge. Michael Foreman is an illustrator and storyteller. His book A Life In Pictures contains previously unseen illustrations from his sketchbooks which give an insight into his inspiration and methodology. Beginning with his childhood in wartime Suffolk, through his early career as a young artist and culminating with his collaborations with authors including Terry Jones and Michael Morpurgo, the book celebrates the places, stories and people that inspired his output. A Life In Pictures is published by Pavilion Children's Books. Painting With Rainbows - A Michael Foreman Exhibition is at Seven Stories - the National Centre for Children's Books in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Si King and Dave Myers are known as The Hairy Bikers. They have written 14 books and celebrated their love of food, travel and motorbikes in a number of TV series. Their latest book, Blood, Sweat and Tyres, tells how two lads from the North East had their childhood challenges and how they met over a curry and a pint on the set of a Catherine Cookson drama. Blood, Sweat and Tyres - The Autobiography is published by Orion Books. George Hinchcliffe is a founder member of the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. He is also its musical director and arranger. A multi-instrumentalist, he has been playing the ukulele since 1960 and has also played with Mary Wells, Michael Nyman and Brian Eno.
