"If your bright, capable child is still struggling in school—even after tutoring and support—it could be time to look beyond academics."Today we explore a season every parent knows all too well: progress report time. While some families breathe a sigh of relief, others are left with questions, concerns, and a nagging sense that something just isn't adding up.Dr. Collier and Jessica break down how vision issues—often hidden beneath strong grades, high intelligence, or even giftedness—can silently affect a child's reading, comprehension, attention, and confidence. They share personal stories, examples from patients, and explain how behavioral optometry goes deeper than a traditional eye exam to uncover what might be holding a child back.If you're a parent, educator, or simply someone who suspects there might be more behind a student's academic struggles, this episode is filled with insights to help you see things more clearly—literally and figuratively.Whether it's an unexplained drop in performance, growing disinterest in a subject, or exhaustion after school, don't brush it off. Have you noticed a shift in how children develop, socialize, and perceive the world around them? Today we discuss the pressing issues raised in Jonathan Haidt's "The Anxious Generation".We explore the profound ways in which the digital age and evolving parenting styles are impacting childhood and adolescence. A key concern is the detrimental impact of screen time on children's visual systems, potentially leading to issues like accommodative spasms and increased nearsightedness. We contrast today's screen-saturated lives with the unstructured outdoor play of previous generations, where children naturally developed crucial social skills such as conflict resolution, turn-taking, and risk assessment.Parental anxiety and a fear of unsupervised play have led to more indoor time and structured activities for children. Ironically, while real-world interactions are often heavily monitored, children are frequently left unsupervised in the digital realm, where they can interact with unknown individuals through games and social platforms. We're well aware that community support in establishing healthy boundaries around screens and outdoor activities is vital. We definitely recommend reading "The Anxious Generation" to gain a deeper understanding of these critical issues and to consider how communities can collectively address the challenges of raising children in the digital age.(00:00) Intro(00:34) "The Anxious Generation" and Its Local Impact(01:39) The Detrimental Effects of Screen Use on Child Development(03:05) From Outdoor Independence to Indoor Safety Concerns(11:23) The Paradox of Overprotection: Real World vs. Online World(16:03) Screen Time: Addiction, Academic Needs, and Finding Balance(20:56) Reclaiming Childhood: Prioritizing Real-World Skills and Unstructured PlayCheck out our Digital Programs4D Built for LifeStart your FREE TRIAL today 4D Built to Read Digital ProgramConcussion RecoveryBuilt to DriveFollow us at 4D Vision Gym on Facebook and Instagram @4dvisiongymvt for the latest news and updates. "Sometimes the signs of a vision issue don't show up in an eye exam—they show up in your child's behavior."In this episode, Jessica shares three key behaviors at home that could indicate your child is struggling with a hidden vision issue. While a 20/20 eye exam might suggest everything is fine, these red flags could signal there's more going on beneath the surface.Behaviors to Watch For:Difficulty Paying Attention – Symptoms that mimic ADHD, like trouble focusing on tasks, could be related to convergence insufficiency or other vision challenges.Emotional Exhaustion After School – If your child melts down or becomes irritable at home, it may be due to the strain of compensating for vision issues throughout the school day.Clumsiness and Spatial Awareness Issues – Frequent tripping, bumping into objects, or difficulty with left/right orientation may point to problems with depth perception or visual processing.Jessica explains how these behaviors often go unnoticed or misdiagnosed but can be addressed through vision therapy. "Vision issues aren't just about 20/20 eyesight. It's about how students see and process their world, and teachers can be the first to notice when something's off."In this episode, we dive into the critical role teachers can play in identifying vision issues in their students. We discuss some of the common signs that might be overlooked in the classroom, from children rubbing their eyes to using their whole head to read instead of just their eyes. We also explain how these visual challenges can affect a student's academic performance and overall behavior.Teachers are often the first line of defense when it comes to spotting these issues, and we explore 3 practical ways they can support students with potential vision problems:Observe classroom behavior for signs like head movement or eye rubbingAsk students questions about what they're seeing or experiencing to better understand their struggles.Advocate for comprehensive vision exams beyond the typical 20/20 vision checks to assess functional vision and eye coordination.Plus, we share a special resource we've created for teachers—a checklist that can help you spot signs of vision issues in your classroom. In this episode of the TAO-Living Podcast, Dr Lou welcomes Nathan Oxenfeld, an expert in natural vision improvement through the Bates Vision Method. Nathan shares his personal journey of healing his own vision after years of relying on glasses and contacts. The conversation delves into the concept of self-healing and the importance of addressing the root causes of vision issues rather than just treating the symptoms. Nathan emphasizes the mind-body connection in vision improvement, highlighting the role of emotional and psychological factors in visual health. He discusses the impact of fear and tension on eye muscles and how addressing these internal issues can lead to significant improvements in vision. Dr. Lou and Nathan explore the misconception that vision deterioration is inevitable with age, challenging the traditional belief that vision can only be corrected through external aids like glasses or surgery. They discuss the importance of integrating the physical and mental aspects of vision improvement, emphasizing the power of inner work and visualization techniques in enhancing eyesight. Through a personal anecdote, Nathan illustrates the transformative effects of addressing deep-seated fears and tensions through visualization exercises. The episode concludes with a reminder of the rapid healing potential when individuals confront and process internal barriers to vision improvement. Listeners are encouraged to consider the holistic approach to vision care presented by Nathan, which focuses on integrating physical exercises with inner reflection and emotional healing to achieve lasting results in visual health. In this episode, host Jey is joined by guest Evan to discuss various topics related to parenting and rare diseases. They talk about the challenges of raising girls, the impact of COVID-19 on education, and the difficulties of finding funding for rare diseases like Sturge-Weber syndrome. They also touch on the profit motives in the medical industry and the importance of seeking third-party perspectives. The conversation concludes with a discussion about personal experiences with rare diseases and the need for preventative medicine. In this conversation, Jey and Evan discuss their Christmas traditions and compare the differences between Australian and American celebrations. They also talk about Boxing Day and how it is celebrated in Australia. They reflect on their journey as podcasters and the impact they hope to make in the lives of others. Evan shares his core values and what grounds him during difficult times. They end the conversation by discussing resources for Sturge Weber Syndrome, a condition Evan's daughter has. Takeaways Raising girls can be challenging, especially as they grow older and develop their own attitudes and opinions. The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted education systems worldwide, causing delays and challenges for students. Rare diseases like Sturge-Weber syndrome often receive less funding and research attention due to their low prevalence. The medical industry is driven by profit motives, which can sometimes hinder the development of cures and preventative treatments. Seeking third-party perspectives and opinions can provide valuable insights and help navigate complex situations. Christmas traditions vary between countries and even between families, but the focus is often on spending time with loved ones and enjoying good food. Boxing Day is a popular holiday in Australia and is often celebrated with cricket matches and sales. It is important to find grounding and perspective during challenging times by focusing on what truly matters and not sweating the small stuff. Resources such as the Sturge-Weber Foundation and the Vascular Malformation Foundation provide valuable information and support for those affected by Sturge Weber Syndrome. 00:00 Introduction and Episode Teaser 01:02 Reunion with Guest Evan 03:05 Evan's Life and Daughter's Condition 05:00 Parenting Challenges and Growing Up 06:17 The Challenges of Raising Girls 07:45 School and Homework 09:06 Education Challenges During COVID-19 10:38 Different School Systems 12:09 Challenges and Progress with Sturge-Weber Syndrome 13:42 Cognition and Social Skills 15:23 Vision Issues and Experimental Surgery 16:52 Medical Treatments and Funding 21:25 The Importance of Third-Party Perspectives 24:09 Lack of Funding for Rare Diseases 25:54 Potential Future Treatments 28:26 Lack of Financial Incentive for Cures 31:10 Personal Experience with Rare Diseases 33:12 Preventative Medicine and Profit Motives 35:45 The Business of Medicine 38:15 Treating Illnesses at Home 40:27 Taking Care of Sick Children 41:21 Asking for Forgiveness, Not Permission 41:48 Evan's Motorbike Purchase 43:00 Conclusion 45:00 Australian Christmas 48:30 Boxing Day 51:32 Looking Ahead 56:41 Roots and Core Values 58:57 Finding Grounding 01:01:32 Advice for Someone in a Dark Place 01:03:29 Resources for Sturge Weber Syndrome From Your Hosts- Jey and Aaron: Jey is a published Children's book Author! Kim is a second grade teacher and mom to two children. When her eldest was struggling with learning to read, she was reminded of a past student with similar challenges, and decided to look deeper into what was the cause of, and solution to, her problem. Greg Wiens is a mennonite pastor in Canada who was inspired by the efforts of a military vet in an issue of National Geographic magazine. While reading an article about the efforts made to offer eyeglasses to people in third world countries, Greg and his partner devised an efficient and cost-effective method of giving eye exams to those less fortunate. The exam takes seconds, and has improved the quality of life for people in underserved communities around the globe. His program recently went viral on Tiktok when he gave an eye exam and had a pair of glasses prepared in under 3 minutes, at a cost of roughly $3 USD. We discuss how the program came to existence, why we don't hear more about the lack of optometry in the media, Greg's passionate tale of how helping the Congalese citizens of Africa has not only brought communities together, and the sacrifices that have been made to heal a war ravaged community.
