Backed by over 40 years of research, Irlen is the pioneer and global leader in spectral filter color lens technology. This innovative, breakthrough solution has helped millions of adults and children around the world. With hundreds of certified providers in 46 countries around the world, Irlen is the original creator of colored lens treatment for light-based, visual processing difficulties.    The Irlen Method has earned millions of fans by providing a long-term, expertly-developed solution for reading problems, headaches, migraines, light sensitivity, ADD and ADHD, autism, and many other light-based difficulties–by directly addressing a core problem: the brain's inability to process visual information and specific wavelengths of light.   This is a very interesting conversation and will make you see light through a new lens and, perhaps, the signs and symptoms may be similar to what you are currently experiencing. Last week (Episode 17) we talked about visual processing. In this episode, we discuss a number of cognitive areas that work in tandem with visual processing. Additionally, we discuss a variety of resources that can be used to enhance these cognitive skills. Related Areas that Work with Visual Processing 1. Visual Processing Speed: processing visual information at a certain pace or speed. 2. Visual-Motor Integration (fine motor dexterity): translating visual perception into a motor response. The ability to make fine and accurate motor responses such as tying one's shoe or one's handwriting skills. 3. Visual Attention: Maintain focus on visual information. 4. Visual Scanning or Tracking: Tracking is the ability to move one's eyes smoothly across the page and from one line of text to another. a. Problems can arise such as eye fatigue, word omissions, reversals, losing one's place while reading, and most importantly these difficulties can negatively impact reading comprehension. b. Tracking can be improved by strengthening eye muscles as well as getting the eyes and brain to work together. c. There are three eye movements that need to be developed: - Fixations: ability to hold one's eyes steady without moving off a target. - Pursuits: ability to follow a moving target with one's eyes. - Saccades (Sucads - french for jerk): ability to jump to new targets that randomly disappear and reappear in a different location. My daughter Jane was diagnosed with Irlen when she was 12 and it has transformed her life in many ways. The purpose of this interview is to help increase the awareness of Irlen Syndrome everywhere because there are children and adults in your life who need to become aware of this.  It is the dyslexia of our time, it's real and there is a proven way of helping people. Getting screened for Irlen and then 2. Getting a definite diagnosis on the colour.  In our experience, there are many great people who can help with the screening and you can connect with them through the main Irlen website and if you're Irish through this website, www.irlen.ie Important:  Our experience on the Diagnosis has been that the results will vary hugely depending on the equipment the diagnostician uses and the way the tests are done, because this will determine the exact colour of the Irlen spectral tints.  The best person we have found for this stage is Alan Penn, who is based in the UK.  He showed us the MASSIVE difference in getting the colour 90% right and 100% right for Jane. Do you struggle with reading or math? Do you lose your place easily when working? Is reading sheet music ridiculously hard? Well, it might not be your eyes OR your ADHD, mama. It might be something called Irlen Syndrome. Not only does it tend to go along with ADHD (& autism!), it can lead to misdiagnosis. Irlen Syndrome, also called Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome, is a perceptual processing disorder, not a vision problem. For those of us who have it, it can lead to some funky vision impairment and: - Extreme light sensitivity - Wanting/needing to read in dim light - Seeing waves or “rivers” in between the lines of text as we read - Poor depth perception - Bad coordination issues & clumsiness - Low self-esteem or motivation …and more.   However, even if you get this diagnosis, there's good news: There are things that can help! Tune in to this week's episode of Motherhood in ADHD to find out more about this condition and learn what you can do to counter these tough symptoms, including what symptoms to look for in children. Many of our ADHD traits bode well with entrepreneurialism, from our curiosity to our fearlessness. Other aspects of ADHD, however, like perfectionism and something I call “procrastilearning”, combined with outside influences telling us what we “should” be doing, can cause us to get in our own way. Entrepreneur and business coach, Jessi Romero, is here to remind us that ADHD women have all the skills necessary for starting and growing successful businesses, we just need to approach it in a way that works for our brains and aligns with our values, nervous systems, and even our circadian rhythms.    In this episode, Jessi gives some of her best tips on structuring your business to fit your needs while avoiding burnout, shares how her approach to teaching sets her apart from other business coaches, and explains why changing your expectations for yourself can make all the difference in your business's longevity. Plus, she has some valuable information about a little-known eye condition called Irlen Syndrome that changed her life and just may change yours too.  Resources Instagram: @adhdfemaleentrepreneurs Website: Adhdfemaleentrepreneurs.com Irlen Syndrome website: irlen.com

[03:22] Matthew and Patrick get things underway as Matthew answers the question: what do you do? He likes to steer clear of commoditizing himself, and instead open to a more fruitful conversation. [05:22] Matthew shares how his original book The Introverts Edge, and now the sequel The Introverts Edge to Networking, came to be. He also touches on why it's important for introverts to understand they hold just as much, if not more, power as their extroverted counterparts. [07:53] With his own struggles growing up as an introvert and diagnosed with Irlen Syndrome, Matthew describes his beginnings as a teenager, then being thrust into the hustle of sales. After getting his first sale on the 93rd try in one day, and then realizing he had to do this all over again for the following days, Matthew decided to learn a system of sales rather than give up. With time, his tenacity paid off in a big way. [13:36] Using examples from his own life, Matthew defines in a simplified way what it is to be introverted and discusses the burdens both introverts and extroverts bear. [18:04] The power of story. Matthew talks about belief systems and how he responds to those who say they can't do something or achieve their dreams because they're introverted. He uses a power of story exercise with his audience and clients to demonstrate both how destructive it can be as it short circuits the logical mind and how powerful it can be to build rapport and create trust. [25:38] Constructing roadblocks and limiting beliefs is common for people before even they get started, and Matthew addresses not only the importance of knowing and expressing one's outcome but also putting in the time, having the patience and committing oneself to learn systems, practice them and act on them. [34:30] Learn to leverage and embrace technology, even automation. Get clear and concise on what you provide and the value of it, so you can articulate it whether you are networking or creating your online presence. You can conserve your energy and attract the sales you need without having to be the loudest presence, rather, the clearest. [43:27] Matthew and Patrick share stories and insights about the impact of personal appearance in relation to each of their experiences with facial scars. Matthew's perspective in general is that every disadvantage gives you a natural advantage. [49:31] Matthew takes us on a journey back to his childhood in Australia and illustrates the environment in which he grew up having growth and abundance mindset parents as an influence. Hearing and experiencing the kinds of conversations they had in support of one another was of great benefit to him. It helped him to understand he had to find the path to his own success. [56:29] Failure. From his viewpoint, Matthew would be shocked to find an overachiever who has not failed more than any underachiever. Work out what went wrong and seek resources to overcome that and move forward. Resilience and a curious mindset will fuel growth. [65:06] Values and passion in the context of business was an evolution for Matthew. Mission #42 On Board: Dr. Helen L. Irlen Mission: Live Brighter and Better Through the Science of Color The Co-Pilot: Dr. Helen L. Irlen is a global leader in the area of visual processing. She’s the founder of the Irlen Method, which emphasizes the importance of color in everyday function for many people. Through years of research, she has discovered that colored glasses or filters can make an incredible difference in how people’s brains function. Fortunately, Helen has been generous with sharing her research and knowledge. There are close to two hundred affiliated Irlen centers worldwide in 45 countries. In addition, Helen has written several books, including most notably The Irlen Revolution: A Guide to Changing Your Perception and Your Life. Connect With Helen: Irlen.comThe Irlen Institute @SeeIrlen on Twitter The Mission Log: [05:12] - Helen talks about herself and her mission in the world. To give us some insight into who she is, she tells us a few stories about her life. [08:43] - Why was Helen interested in the psych ward, and what was the driving force that motivated her to pursue her research? [11:29] - Helen goes into more detail about what the Irlen Syndrome is. She also describes the experience of working one-on-one with adults. [17:06] - How do you become a good listener? Helen says to avoid imposing your own issues on someone else, so you’re a blank slate and can really hear what people are saying. [18:51] - The Irlen Syndrome is a visual processing deficit that you can inherit or acquire (or both). It leads to difficulties in areas such as reading, academic skills, attention and concentration, depth perception, and more. [19:34] - The symptoms of Irlen Syndrome can vary, Helen explains. She also talks about the percents of people who have the syndrome. We hear about how flourescent light can be an issue for many people. [23:36] - Orion volunteers to be Helen’s guinea pig, which allows listeners to hear several minutes of Helen’s questioning process for beginning to assess whether someone might have Irlen Syndrome. [28:15] - Helen describes the issues that can be triggered for certain people by sunlight, bright lights, fluorescent lights, and so on. [29:50] - How does Helen help the people who come to her? She suggests starting with the tests on her website. [32:20] - Helen talks about what colored filters and lenses can do to help our brains. [34:01] - We hear about how Helen’s research and methods can help people who have been in the military with various problems and symptoms. She also discusses its uses for people on the autism spectrum, as well as high-functioning professional adults who want peak performance. [39:21] - Helen speaks emotionally about the impact that her method has had on veterans and marines. [42:07] - Helen offers two funny stories of the effects that Irlen filters have had on users. [43:18] - You can inherit Irlen Syndrome, which doesn’t always show up in childhood and may present in college or later. [47:02] - What would Helen like her legacy to be? In her answer, she explains why she isn’t interested in retiring: because she can’t think of anything more rewarding than what she’s already doing every day. [50:29] - Helen shares her three top tips for living a stellar life: 1. Understand that your brain is uniquely different from anyone else’s brain. 2. Don’t buy into what other people have said to you about yourself. 3. Give yourself a hug everyday and tell yourself how wonderful you are. Your Pre-Flight Checklist: Practice becoming a better listener. Do your best to set your own issues and thoughts aside to become a blank slate and listen to what the person you’re talking to is actually saying. Think about how you feel after you’ve been focused on reading for a while. If you experience physical symptoms, you may fall on the Irlen Syndrome continuum. Take the “Long Self-Test for Irlen Syndrome.” This test will help you determine whether you’re one of the many people unknowingly suffering from Irlen Syndrome. Does he have trouble reading under fluorescent light or get headaches when he reads? Does he read slowly, skip words and lines? Is it hard for him to read for long periods of time? Jack may not need glasses. These and other conditions can be symptoms of Irlen Syndrome. Irlen Syndrome is not a vision problem but is the brain's difficulty with processing visual information. It's relieved by using colored filters or colored lenses to reduce perceptual distortions. Nearly half of people with reading problems, dyslexia and learning disabilities have Irlen Syndrome although they may also have other difficulties. Want to learn more to help Jack.
