A visit by the duo to the tenants of Kellynch Hall reminds Anne of what her father's hubris has lost them, and she is also informed that Captain Wentworth has been speaking of her. The return of Mary and her family to Uppercross fills the house with light and laughter, a stark contrast to before where the cloud of Louisa's injury cast a pall over the whole party. A letter from her sister Elizabeth alerts Anne to the presence of Mr Elliot, the cousin to whom she became reacquainted at Lyme, in Bath, where he has regained his place within the family. Competition does wonders for reflecting on what might have been as Wentworth observes another man noticing Anne. The Elliot's cousin, and heir to Kellynch Hall, has coincidentally arrived in Lyme and is staying at the same hotel as the Uppercross party. Having previously rejected the Baronetage, and a family plan to engage him to Anne's sister Elizabeth, his estrangement from the Elliot's is still raw for Anne. However, opportunities arise for conversation and clearing of air. Girlish tomfoolery results in injury and the ever-noble Captain Wentworth reflects on his culpability in seeking Anne's counsel; yet his demeanour is staid. This week is Multiple Birth Awareness Week (March 17 - 22) - a week to spotlight parents of multiple babies (twins or higher order multiples) and bring awareness to their unique parenthood experience. Hosted by @ausmultiplebirthassociation, this year's theme is ‘Multiples unfiltered. Tell your story. Find your community.'  We are thrilled to be releasing today's episode during Multiple Birth Awareness Week. Today, we are joined by the incredible, warm and thoughtful Georgia and Silje, two mothers who connected through their experiences of becoming triplet mums.  Georgia (she/her) is a lawyer and mother to three triplet boys - Finn, Jude and Marlo. Silje (she/her) is a lawyer, director of the Australian Multiple Birth Association and mother to an older son, Mads, as well as triplet toddlers - Teddy, Eric and Ada. Silje and Georgia share their story unfiltered, and walk us through the experience of caring for triplets in a society that offers little extra support. Parents of multiples are more likely to experience postnatal anxiety or depression than parents of singletons, and only 11% of parents of multiples feel adequately supported by the programs and policies in place to support them. In Australia, parents of multiples do not receive additional paid parental leave, premature baby leave or appropriate government allowances to assist them with the enormous undertaking of raising multiple babies. We hope this episode raises more awareness into the needs of parents with multiples, and helps advocate for change. She homeschools her two children (aged 10 & 7) on the Surfcoast of Victoria where they are surrounded by national park, the beach and immersed in nature.SUMMARYHow Micarlé and her husband came to be living in Anglesea, her long standing connection to this small seaside town and wanting for her kids what both she and her husband had growing up in small country town communitiesMicarlé's education saw her throwing herself into everything and anything and milking school for the all extracurriculars on offer, in contrast to her husband's experience feeling disengaged from learning and not being reached by his teachersAs a service orientated person she was drawn to the teaching profession and taught in a range of secondary schools before taking the leap into home educating her own childrenWe discuss applied learning pathways for teens in high school, a space she worked in for many years under the VCAL/VCEVM program and how different schools have differing stigmas around these streamsAfter 15 years teaching in the secondary space, she began questioning whether the mainstream school system would even work for her own childrenMicarlé recalls how the pandemic gave their family a glimpse into what homeschooling could be like and how they transitioned over the lock down years from remote learning and remote teaching to fully fledged homeschoolersBusting the myth “You're a teacher, it makes sense for you to homeschool" - deschooling for any parent is hard but deschooling for teachers is even harderHomeschooling has given their daughter time and space to rebuild her confidence and self-worth and for that reason alone it has been the best decision they ever madeHow Micarlé came to be the owner of Fearless Homeschool and what to expect from the 8th Australian Homeschooling Summit, that runs from the 4th-15th March 2024The summit includes 30+ online workshops such as how to afford homeschooling, curriculum comparisons, sustainable living, feeling empowered in unschooling, as well as teen, graduate, neurodiversity and tech panels. In this episode, I'm joined by sisters Hannah and Em. Hannah is a mother to three children: Iris, Oaka, and Charlie. Iris and Oaka are angel babies, who Hannah very sadly lost during her pregnancies with them, before she had Charlie, who is now 20 months old. So I'd obviously like to include a trigger warning here as we do discuss Hannah's story of miscarriage and pregnancy loss at a few points throughout today's chat. I've put some resources below that I encourage you to visit if this episode brings anything up for you. Hannah's story in episode 4 touches on pregnancy and parenting after multiple pregnancy losses. She also shares her motherhood journey with Charlie: from birth, breastfeeding, sleep challenges, and relationship and friendship shifts.  Em is a mother to an almost 3-year-old son, Wilbur. In episode 5, Em shared her experience of breaking up with her partner who she'd been with since they were in high school due to his infidelity. All of this happening while Em was navigating new motherhood with a young toddler. She speaks about navigating being single for the first time since she was 16, dating as a single parent, navigating co-parenting, and her motherhood journey with Wilbur.  Sharing these things that aren't spoken about very often is so important in others feeling less alone, and I thank you for your honesty Hannah and Em.  Today's chat is such a raw and open conversation about their experience of growing up through their parents' hostile divorce, which had a massive impact on them, with both of them living alone in commission housing and having to work to get themselves through their final years of high school as a result. Following the divorce, both of their relationship's with their mother was impacted as well, and they don't have her as a part of their lives today. So they speak about how that has been in their own motherhood journeys. They also touch on how their parents' divorce has influenced their attitudes to their own parenting choices and styles, and on Em's outlook to her co-parenting relationship with her son's father. We also catch up on how parenthood has shifted for them in the 8-9 months since we recorded and how everything is going for them now. You can listen to Hannah's story in episode 4 of season 1 here. In this episode, I am joined by doula Bree Stafford and Homebirth Mindset Coach & Guide Ashley Winning to discuss what they've noticed in supporting people in their homebirth after caesarean (HBAC) journeys. Guest 1: Bree Stafford Bree is a birth doula, birth photographer, and mum of three. Bree's three birth experiences have opened her heart to what is possible. Her first babies, two boys, whose arrivals took her on a journey through an intervention filled hospital birth, resulting in a Cesarean with her first son. The process of planning a vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC) with her second son, resulting in a repeat, yet empowered cesarean. With her third pregnancy with her daughter, Bree realised that everything she needed was within, not external to her, and she birthed her lovingly at home (HBA2C). Bree's birth experiences, combined with her doula training with Rhea Dempsey in 2009, enables her to support pregnant and labouring women in their journeys to motherhood. Through her work, she wishes to provide women with the information, wisdom, and power that she wishes she had leading into her first son's birth. Guest 2: Ashley Winning Ashley is a Homebirth Mindset Coach & Guide, Podcaster, Speaker, and she birthed her third baby at home unassisted after two surgical births. Ashley believes that women are born with the strength, wisdom and courage to birth and be the mothers they want to be. She works intimately with pregnant women who plan to homebirth/freebirth by working through fear and mindset challenges, while providing emotional support so that they feel heard, seen & validated while taking the steps to intuitively birth their baby their way. In this episode, we're joined by Katelyn (she/her). Katelyn and her husband, Luke, live in Geelong and are parents to a two-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Bella, and a 4.5-month-old son, Rupert. During Katelyn's labour with Bella, she had an induction, followed by an emergency caesarean due to fetal distress. There was also meconium present in the amniotic fluid. Subsequently, she encountered challenges with breastfeeding, including painful and cracked nipples, so she decided to pump and bottle feed for the majority of their feeding journey. For her second child, Rupert, Katelyn opted for a repeat caesarean. However, post-birth, she faced medical complications stemming from the caesarean, resulting in hospital stays and additional surgical procedures. These complications affected her time with Bella and the process of feeding Rupert. Katelyn reflects on her positive experience with her mother's group and discusses how motherhood has enriched her relationships with her numerous friends who are also parents. Her bond with her husband has remained steadfast since becoming parents, and she loves parenting alongside him. Furthermore, Katelyn shares her journey of returning to work and some challenges that arose there. She delves into the transformative impact of motherhood on her personal identity. CW: Postnatal Anxiety, OCD, Intrusive Thoughts In this episode, we're joined by Amy (she/her). Amy and her husband, Andy, have a blended family with four children. While three of the children are Amy's stepchildren from Andy's previous relationships, they recently welcomed their daughter, Lola, who is now 14 months old. Amy's experience as a mother has been shaped by the challenges of Lola's health. Lola was diagnosed with hip dysplasia at six weeks old, which required her to wear a Pavlik Harness from nine weeks until 6.5 months. This brought about difficulties in feeding and bathing her, and regular check-ups were necessary. Additionally, Lola experienced delays in her motor skills development, such as rolling, crawling, and walking. Amy emphasises the importance of raising awareness about hip dysplasia and wishes there had been more information available to parents. The stress of Lola's condition, along with disrupted sleep and restlessness, contributed to Amy's anxiety. Balancing the responsibilities of being a new mother and a step-parent to three other children, she began feeling overwhelmed and pressured to manage household tasks, placing a lot of self-imposed pressure on herself. While her husband, Andy, reassured her that she didn't need to do everything, Amy struggled with her own anxieties and feelings of responsibility. Recognising the need for support, Amy self-admitted herself to a Mother Baby Unit when Lola was eight months old. The break provided relief, and the nurses helped Amy identify her symptoms of OCD and intrusive thoughts related to Lola. After her stay at the Mother Baby Unit, Amy emerged feeling more relaxed and better equipped to manage her thoughts. While challenges still arise, Amy has developed tools to rationalise them and cope with the accompanying stress. Amy also shares her experience with building a support network. As her local parents' group didn't align with her needs, Amy and a friend from work formed their own mothers' group, including other mothers and even reconnecting with an old housemate who also had a baby. She reflects on the regret of allowing many people to visit during the early weeks and expresses a desire to go back in time to savour those precious moments with Andy and the children. Furthermore, Amy discusses her transition back to nursing work, highlighting the change in perspective she has gained. While she used to thrive in the fast-paced nursing environment, she now realises the importance of family and cherishing time with her young children. Currently working in the cardiovascular unit, which offers a more family-friendly schedule and a close-knit atmosphere. Amy also shares her experiences with Lola's transition to daycare. Amy addresses the changes in her relationship with Andy, acknowledging their enduring strength but limited opportunities to connect. Since Lola's birth, they have not been on a date, as it is challenging for Amy to let go and trust someone else to care for their daughter besides Andy or daycare. No question was off-limits, and the prompt of 'get comfortable with being uncomfortable' saw questions about the dangers of 'fetishisation', about agriculture and contemporising culture, and the danger of Traditional Owners (TO's) and First Nations consultant groups becoming overwhelmed and burnt-out.  You also asked questions about the design industry, on reconciling project timelines, and the ways we can regenerate Country.  Part 1 explored the ‘eggshells' of engagement — the role of understanding that each project, situation and engagement is a unique opportunity to understand the land from the beginning. We chat about her inspiring and exciting collaboration with Lucy from Pennyweight Farm and how this has enabled her to get her hands firmly in the earth, growing and tending herbs and flowers. Caroline's home in the Wombat forest is a special place and her daily connection through walks in nature form a big part of her self care, she takes us on a walk, sharing the sights and smells she experiences each day. We finish up our chat as Caroline shares a lovely and nourishing ritual using a beautiful handmade oil to help ease frazzled nerves and drift into calm. Caroline has such a wonderful way of bringing the herbs into our everyday and I think you're going to really enjoy our chat. Chickstory is back with a new look a new co-host but the same incredible stories about often overlooked women from history. Meet Phoebe, my new co-host. Phoebe resides on Wadawurrung land and is your resident history detective and super sleuth (her parents also refer to her as a "sticky beak'') she is passionate about genealogy and discovered a love of researching families, their origins and finding skeletons in the closet (and coaxing them out). This is mostly due to her fascination with her own family history which is abundant with stories and mysteries from all over the world. It took Phoebe a while to find her groove and work out what she wanted to do, but after an epiphany, while reading the newspaper in her early-20s, she realised that history "detectiving" was what she needed to do. So, she established Born & Bred Historical Research eight years ago to do just that. Born & Bred researches just about anything and everything you might imagine: family trees, family history, the history of your home, business or property, heir searches, oral history interviews, as well as being passionate about helping indigenous Australians with their genealogy. I'm thrilled to welcome Phoebe, and we can't wait to share many more stories of remarkable women with you! Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/chickstory. Calm, flowing creek with night-time frog calls

Nature Track

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 19, 2021 58:19

No music, no voices, just the sound of a gentle stream and frogs calling on a still, cool night in regional Victoria. Moonlight floods the landscape of Wadawurrung country. Big, old candlebarks stand still and silent and a creek flows through a shallow valley. Grasses grow up to the waist, except where kangaroos have been nibbling them! And within the sedges by the creek lurk frogs who revel in the still night, the cold air and the perfect opportunity to sing for a mate. It's hard to hear many of the other sounds above the water flowing and the frogs, but there are actually many creatures in this recording if you've got very good ears and time to listen hard. Listening notes from Ann Jones: 01:50 Common eastern froglet with a "creaky-creaky-creaky" call. Don't let the name fool you — these are tiny frogs, with a maximum size of 3cm. The best way to see them is to wait until night and use a torch to try and see tiny little eyes on the edge of the water. They will appear in almost any habitat really, they're not too picky and will probably breed at any time of year also. 24:00 The brown tree frogs are calling. These are medium frogs – that means they'll only get up to about 4.5cm. It's a pretty common little frog throughout the south-eastern part of the mainland – and will be heard in natural areas, farms and even in town! They'll call at basically any time of year. 25:42 A female powerful owl is calling in the distance. This is Australia's largest owl, and the female's call is ringing out across her territory. 38:48 A female fox is calling in a characteristic scream/cough, though it's very faint with all the rowdy frogs. She's advertising her presence to other foxes, and who knows if she got a response. She did set distant dogs off barking though! These dogs bark on and off throughout this whole recording. Their voices really carry – I think they were well over a kilometre away. You can just hear their lower tones floating underneath the close water and frog sound. 44:27 A possum in a tree being rowdy as it cullumps through the branches. 51:20 Sugar gliders are nearby, chirping out their little barks. And also…. if you listen closely, you can hear a launch, silence while she glides, and a landing. To be fair though, this could be a ringtail in the tree, as shortly after the noises, a ringtail starts calling. Possibly more likely to be a ringtail, they're more clumsy. 52:05 The ringtail sounds like an extremely high-frequency horse's whinny. They almost sound like insects. They have a prehensile tail, meaning they use it to grip branches, or to carry things, like bunches of leaves back to their hollows. The ringtails in Victoria are, I think, much cuter than the ringtails further north. Gauntlet thrown. 1:34:45 I think this sharp, strong insect sound is possibly a katydid. 2:12:40 You can hear the scolding, throat-clearing calls of the brush-tailed possums. There are several through this recording and they also move through trees, in a very characteristically noisy way throughout the soundscape. If you hear rustling, it's likely a possum looting a tree. 2:38:10 This is one of those breaks, where all the frogs just decide, through some cue, to stop calling all at once in an area. Then, one will start up — and it all kicks off again.
