Welcome back! This week, we look at another timely, underrated film, Wag the Dog. It's directed by Barry Levinson (Rain Man) and co-written by David Mamet (Glengarry Glen Ross). The cast is also prime, with Robert DeNiro and Dustin Hoffman leading a large ensemble. The film is a late 90s political satire, in which the US president stages a fake war to avoid a massive sexual scandal. Sound familiar? Maybe a little too familiar?

The 57th highest-grossing movie of 1997 and the 46th highest-grossing of 1998. Released limited on Christmas Day 1997 and wide on January 4th 1998 where it finished 4th behind Titanic, Good Will Hunting, and As Good As It Gets, it went on to gross 64 million dollars on a 15 million dollar budget Directed by Baltimore Barry Levinson and written by Hilary Henkin and David Mamet, and starring Robert De Niro, Dustin Hoffman, Anne Heche, Denis Leary, Woody Harrelson, Willie Nelson, Kirsten Dunst, Andrea Martin, John Michael Higgins, Suzanne Cryer, Hollywood's most famous Albanian Jim Belushi, and William H. Macy, Wag the Dog found itself on several year-end Best Of lists. It is certified fresh on RT with a score of 86 and a strong Metacritic score of 74. It was nominated for 2 Golden Globes – Best Picture Comedy, Best Actor Hoffman, and Best Adapted Screenplay for Henkin and Mamet, along with 2 Oscars -one, for Hoffman and the other for screenplay. Wag the Dog tells the story of a scandal-ridden president whose chief spin doctor, Conrad Brean (De Niro), decides to distract the public with a fictional war with Albania. To pull this off, he hires Stanley Motss (Hoffman), a prominent Hollywood producer who throws himself into orchestrating an imaginary war, complete with fake footage, fake war heroes and a popular theme song. The hoax is successful, but it soon comes with a host of complications which require Brean and Motss to take quick action to further deceive the public. Based on Lorenzo Carcaterra's controversial novel (whose “based on a true story” claim remains disputed), Sleepers is a dark, operatic tale of childhood abuse and adult revenge. The humor of Vietnam is gone. In its place: Catholic guilt, corrupted institutions, and the brutal costs of unresolved trauma.If Good Morning, Vietnam was about resisting propaganda, Sleepers is about rewriting it. The second half of the film becomes an elaborate lie—a staged trial, manufactured witnesses, rigged outcomes—all orchestrated not to deceive the audience, but to achieve justice the legal system refuses to provide.Levinson doesn't ask us to condone this. Released just weeks before the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal broke, this film is practically prophetic.A spin doctor (Robert De Niro) and a Hollywood producer (Dustin Hoffman) fabricate a fake war to distract from a presidential sex scandal. It's absurd. It's hilarious. And it feels… inevitable.This is Levinson in full meta mode, stripping the illusion of politics down to its skeleton.
