Es nuestro último podcast del año 2022 y hemos querido llenarlo de canciones que para nosotros representan diferentes momentos entrañables y personales de estos 12 meses. Son una docena de temas que abarcan un trayecto de la música Americana que ha intentado irse reponiendo de la pandemia, interiorizando cada una de las experiencias. No hemos querido ordenarlas de ninguna forma. Willie Nelson ha sido el encargado de abrir esta selección cantando sobre el envejecer. Tras él ha llegado Charley Crockett cantando al hombre de Waco, hemos recordado las visitas a nuestro país de Ward Hayden & The Outliers o Vandoliers y las ganas de que vengan bandas como The Barlow. Aunque Brandi Carlile, como algunos otros músicos, nos dejó su último álbum en el 21 ese proyecto ha tenido su recorrido en el año que se nos agota. Ella y Sierra Ferrell son dos de los mejores ejemplos de la diversidad y la potencia de las mujeres en la Americana. Esta última, además, nos sorprendió con un mágnifico dúo con Ray LaMontagne, dando un toque de romanticismo que tiene en Luke Winslow-King a uno de sus mejores representantes. Y han sido tres grupos los que han cerrado este último podcast del año. The Wilder Blue y 49 Winchester son dos bandas a los que seguir muy de cerca, pero hemos querido dejar para el final la que si hemos querido destacar “Reasons to Run” de Old Crow Medicine Show como la canción que mejor nos representa en 2022. Pero 2023 está ahí mismo y el próximo 24 de septiembre se cumplirán 50 años de RADIO CON BOTAS. Habrá que celebrarlo. Abrimos hoy con un gran guitarrista de rockandroll retro, JD McPherson y su versión del clásico de “Big Al” Downing que esperamos sea el adelanto de un disco completo del artista, tras su excelente y navideño Socks del 2018. Como completo casi debe estar ya el de los Band of Heathens que nos regalan grandes y exactas versiones casi todos los días. Y imprimiéndose deben estar los vinilos y los Cds del nuevo de Shooter Jennings que nos deja con gran sabor rock soul en sus dos nuevos temas. Y otro adelanto, el de los Hoodos Gurus de gran recuerdo ochentero que anuncian álbum para marzo, jugoso y enérgico powerpop aussie, con gran energía también desde LA Mike Campbell, ex-rompecorazones, con sus Dirty Knobs que dice tener una mente malvada (ay) pero un corazón de oro (cuidado no te lo trasplanten). Y de piedra nos quedamos con el acercamiento soul al legendario artista country Merle Haggard, The Hag, a cargo de Eli “Paperboy” Reed. Da la talla, claro que sí, en una de las mejores justificaciones de por qué has de escuchar country si te gusta el rock o el soul. Brandi Carlile, también country, publica autobiografía y nos enseña que los caballos rotos sí saben correr, como los de Victoria Bailey bajo la lluvia camino de Arizona, o los caminos de Matt Maverick en busca de su sueño americano, el que recorre el canadiense Corb Lund en la tejana autopista 87, arriba y abajo. Ah, los bostonianos Ward Hayden & the Outliers que también hacen música de raíces han sonado en medio de los vaqueros, aunque ellos sean de Boston. Ward Hayden and the Outliers are an American Alt-Country/Rock band from the Northeast. They have been playing music together for some time now, and they just released an album of new songs. It sounds incredible. Their hard driving sound is reminiscent of Drive By Truckers, with great guitar tones and thoughtful lyrics. I had a chance to chat with them about their songs and the band recently. It was a fantastic conversation. They're really good guys making great music. I hope you dig it!

One of the youngest violin professors at Boston’s Berklee College of Music, Anick is considered “a rising star in the world of jazz violin and mandolin” (Downbeat Magazine). In addition to leading various groups under his own name and performing with the Rhythm Future Quartet, Anick has been touring and recording with Grammy award-winning Nashville guitar virtuoso John Jorgenson since 2008 when he was recruited while still a senior at the Hartt Conservatory. Over the past few years, Jason has been focusing on arranging and composing for the Rhythm Future Quartet, Jason Anick Acoustic Trio, and the Anick/Yeager Quartet. The Rhythm Future Quartet, which Jason started with Finish guitar virtuoso Olli Soikkeli, is rapidly becoming one of the preeminent Gypsy jazz groups in the country. The group just released its third album, "RFQ and Friends" which was praised by JazzTimes as "packed to the gills with feeling... dynamic, full of virtuosity and swing".The Jason Anick Acoustic Trio, which formed in 2017, applies Jason's formidable improvisational and compositional chops to the roots/fiddle music of his youth. The Jason Anick/Jason Yeager Quartet draws on the wide swath of musical interests of its co-leaders, blending straight-ahead and post-bop jazz, world music, funk and pop, eagerly embracing what Anick and Yeager have defined as “jazz without borders.” Their debut album, United, garnered rave reviews including 4.5 stars from Downbeat Magazine. A versatile musician and sought after side-man, Anick has also shared the stage with an array of artist like Stevie Wonder, Tommy Emmanuel, Hamilton de Holanda, The Jim Kweskin Jug Band, John Sebastian, Delta Rae, and Ward Hayden and the Outliers. With performances all over the world from China, Europe, and Japan and renowned venues like the Montreal Jazz Festival, Blue Note, Smalls Jazz Club, Scullers Jazz Club, Yoshi's, Iridium, TD Garden, Regattabar, NPR, and The Late Night Show, Jason has proven himself to be a leader in the ever-growing contemporary string world.Jason is also a sought-after educator, and has taught jazz violin and mandolin to students of all ages at string camps, workshops, and clinics around the world. Jason regularly contributes educational columns to Fiddler Magazine and instructional videos to DC Music and Christian Howes' Creative Strings Academy.

Even with all of the cool country music fashion we’ve seen over the years, Jim Lauderdale’s Manuel suits included, nobody has ever made me drop my jaw and exclaim out loud like Ward Hayden’s Tex-Mex suit of flowers and jewels on Wednesday night. It was black with tightly embroidered vines and blooms and just covered like a mirror ball with rhinestones. He wore it well and led Girls Guns and Glory in a set that easily justified the audacious accouterments. It was one quarter of a night that delivered half bluegrass and half rocking country and 100% well written songs.
