It's been nearly eight years since today's guest Benjamin Booker released his critically acclaimed second album, Witness, but now he's back with a vengeance with his powerful new album Lower, in stores now, which he made in collaboration with producer Kenny Segal. Booker explains his long road to this highly personal collection of songs. And this past week marked the definitive "last waltz" for The Band with the passing of the last man standing, Garth Hudson. Long Ryders singer/guitarist Sid Griffin, author of Million Dollar Bash: Bob Dylan, The Band, and the Basement Tapes, is here to try and convey the monumental impact that Garth and The Band had on American music and around the world, particularly in light of our present Post-Chalamet Dylan Renaissance, And a reminder, you can still help Musicares help the people who bring you the music by donating at Musicares.org/firerelief and if you're a music business professional in need, you may be eligible for assistance by emailing musicaresrelief@musicares.org The Record Store Day Podcast is a weekly music chat show written, produced, engineered and hosted by Paul Myers, who also composed the theme music and selected interstitial music. Send us a Text Message. On this episode, we discuss one of the seminal bands of what would become the alternative country and Americana movement: the Long Ryders, and their 1984 debut LP Native Sons. Formed in Los Angeles in the early 1980s, the Long Ryders were a counter to the synth-heavy music that was in vogue at the time. Drawing on their diverse musical backgrounds (punk and garage rock, ska, country, and hard rock), the band combined their broad musical pallet to create a sound that was guitar based, influenced by the American music of the 1960's (most notably the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers) and played with the raw energy of punk. Their EP 10-5-60 introduced the world to the band's take on the fusion of country and rock, but it is with Native Sons, a jangly, high octane ball of roots rock, folk, soul, psychedelia, and of course country, where the band staked their claim as standard bearers of Gram Parsons' vision of "Cosmic America Music" updated for the post-punk age. Synopsis On today's date in 1951, Leonard Bernstein conducted the New York Philharmonic in the premiere performance of the Symphony No. 2 by Charles Ives. Ives was then 76 and living in Connecticut. Heart disease and diabetes left him far too weak to attend the Carnegie Hall premiere. Nicholas Slonimsky recalls once asking the thin and pale Ives how he was feeling, to which Ives replied he felt so weak that (quote): "I can't even spit into the fireplace." Ives didn't own a radio, so he visited his neighbors, the Ryders, to hear Bernstein conduct the Sunday afternoon broadcast performance of music he had composed some 50 years earlier. "There's not much to say about the Symphony," Ives said at the time. "I express the musical feelings of the Connecticut country in the 1890's. It's full of the tunes they sang and played then, and I thought it would be a sort of a joke to have some of these tunes in counterpoint with some Bach-like tunes." Ives' neighbor, Mrs. Ryder, recalled how he reacted to the radio broadcast: "Mr. Ives sat in the front room and listened as quietly as could be, and I sat way back behind him, because I didn't want him to think I was looking at him. After it was over, I'm sure he was very much moved. He stood up, walked over the fireplace, and spat! And then he walked out into the kitchen and said not a word." Music Played in Today's Program Charles Ives (1874 - 1954) Symphony No. 2 New York Philharmonic; Leonard Bernstein, conductor. DG 429 220
