After more than 24 hours of debate and nearly 60 amendments, the Washington House approved Senate Bill 6346, a proposal to impose a 9.9% tax on household income above $1 million. The bill passed 51–46 and now returns to the Senate for agreement before heading to Gov. Bob Ferguson, who has indicated he will sign it. Supporters say the measure would help modernize Washington's tax system and expand programs such as the Working Families Tax Credit, while critics argue it is unconstitutional and could harm families and businesses. The proposal could face legal challenges and possible voter action if enacted. It's October, which means the presidential election here in the US is next month. So here on AMDG we are going to take old that rule about never discussing religion or politics in polite company and throw it in the Potomac River. Our four episodes this month will all cover faith and politics in a variety of ways. We know you don't come here for political news and analysis, so we won't be talking about the ins and outs of the election or really all that much about the election itself. Instead, we're hoping to go deeper into why politics might matter to people of faith in the first place. Our series of guests all come at questions about this stuff from different angles. We're getting started on today's episode with the only American Jesuit who served as a state's lieutenant governor before entering the Society of Jesus. (We didn't actually look that fact up, but we're sure it's true.) Cyrus Habib, SJ, is a Jesuit in the stage of formation called regency. When he entered the Jesuits in 2020, Cyrus had been serving as the State of Washington's Lieutenant Governor for three years. An extremely successful and popular politician, it was quite possible Cyrus would've eventually become the governor of the state. But he gave up his political career for a Jesuit vocation. And these are just two chapters of Cyrus' incredible life story: the son of Iranian immigrants to the United States, Cyrus lost his eyesight to cancer as an eight-year-old kid. After graduating from Columbia University in 2003, he studied English literature as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University then earned a law degree at Yale. He practiced law in Washington State from 2009 until 2017, and during that time was elected to the Washington House of Representatives. It's safe to say he surprised a lot of people when he walked away from politics to enter the Society. Host Mike Jordan Laskey asked Cyrus about his story and his vocation. They also talked about the value of politics and what from the Church's tradition we might be able to offer the country to help heal our partisan divides. On Wednesday, Speaker McCarthy managed to advance a GOP-led bill through the House that would raise the nation's debt limit while also limiting federal spending. Although Speaker McCarthy was able to narrowly secure the votes needed to pass the legislation, the bill is unlikely to survive the Democrat-led Senate. President Biden has maintained that he will not meet with House Republicans to negotiate whether or not the debt ceiling is extended, adding to tensions at the nation's Capitol as the default deadline fast approaches. FOX News Senior Congressional Correspondent Chad Pergram unpacks the contents of the debt limit bill and explains how it was able to pass in the first place. He later looks ahead to the future of the bill amid the looming economic crisis at hand. Mayor Oscar Leeser announced that he will declare El Paso, Texas in a state of emergency once Title 42 expires, effective May 11th. Large concerns that the city is facing are the thousands of migrants waiting to cross the border at once, limited mass sheltering, and lack of transportation out of the community. Deputy City Manager Mario D'Agostino details how El Paso is preparing for this influx of migrants, reveals how much their plans will cost, and explains why declaring a state of emergency is the only effective way of even beginning to prepare for this border crisis. GUEST: newly elected Washington House of Representatives Republican Leader, Drew Stokesbary, tells KVI he "has hit the ground running" in this new leadership position. Stokesbary is asked about the Leg. Democrats and Gov. Inslee blaming Republicans for their majority failure to fix the drug possession law. Stokesbary concedes that throwing people in jail for drugs is an outdated concept but underscores drug users have to want treatment and you need the check and balance of a jail penalty to get there. Stokesbary says for Republicans to succeed in WA, voters need more experience with Republicans to change pre-conceptions about the party's candidates. By doing that, he says Republicans can "create enough goodwill...talking to (voters) about issues that matter to them". Carlson says the opportunity for Republicans right now is that Democrats have "overplayed their hand".
