Training WheelsReflect God's Grace in Your ParentingRead or Watch"You must be kind, you must be witty," goes an old Disney song, as children recite a recipe for their perfect nanny. But when Marry Poppins arrived, maybe you found yourself resentful of her sugary tactics as she tackled every problem gracefully. Unlike her, most of us can't do chores with a "snap" or blow away on an umbrella after a season. Instead, those who aren't "practically perfect in every way" must rely on God's grace. So, as we shape our children, how do we embrace God's favor and reflect it into our children's lives? The Big IdeaThe gospel of grace gives us a new lens through which we see ourselves, our kids, and our parenting. God gives us strength in our weakness, help in our struggles, and mercy when we fail. We don't earn his forgiveness, and we shouldn't require that from our children. We've all "sinned ... and are justified by his grace as a gift" (Rom. 3:23-24). And we forgive because of who we are, not because others have earned it.So there's no "perfect parent" award or "parenting police." Christ commands whole-life devotion — to "be perfect" or complete "as your heavenly Father is perfect" (Matt. 5:44). But Jesus says that starts by seeing our need for grace before God (Matt. 5:3). Don't miss how owning and admitting our mistakes eases the burden of "perfection" on our children. Make space for them to drop their guard and open up to you. Extend them the same graciousness God gives us (Titus 2:11-14).While losing our temper at our kids is wrong, choosing not to repair and apologize creates a bigger issue. Remember, God forgives those who forgive others (Matt. 6:15). And forgiveness goes both ways! If we expect our kids to say, "Sorry," when they're wrong, are we willing to model that for them? When we admit our mistakes and ask for forgiveness, we show them our priority is repairing the relationship. The Big QuestionDo you need to rely more on God's grace in your parenting?Support the Show

Greg's is a house-hold name among franchisees and in any discussion of franchise relationships. He is the founder and director of Franchise Relations Institute. What should I do with my life? The first question of leadership. “I believe this question is likely as old as human consciousness. It drives us to ponder the very purpose, passion and plan for our lives. If we do not consider these things, we are little different than the plants of the field, the animals of the forest, birds of the air and fish of the sea. Our very ability to ponder our purpose sets us apart as a species.” J Loren Norris There are three questions which I believe support this FIRST question. The more diligently you answer these other three questions, the more clear the answer becomes to the first question. WHAT AM I GIFTED AT DOING? If I look across the spectrum of things I am capable of, which ones really stand out? What have been awarded for, won trophies for, received accolades or scholarships for? These responses from what those around you have observed in you are strong indicators of your giftedness. Neuroscientist Dr. Caroline Leaf says, “If you do can something which causes others to look at you with awe and wonder how you did it, and you think to yourself, ‘That was simple, I thought everyone could do that.' That is your gift!” Now master that gift. Become more than naturally gifted in it. Become the BEST IN THE WORLD at that gift. WHAT DO I LOVE DOING? Not everyone, but almost everyone actually finds both joy and fulfillment in performing the function of their gift. Perhaps because it comes with great levels of attention and amazement. Perhaps because it comes so easily and naturally. Perhaps because they possess a natural bent to do this thing, its like second nature and super simple. If you LOVE TO DO SOMETHING and others like to watch you do it OR would want to have for themselves the results of your having done it, such as a one of a kind piece of art or a souvenir, you should pay close attention to that. WOULD PEOPLE PAY ME TO DO THAT? If you find, people are willing to pay you to do what you do, or pay to WATCH YOU do what you do or pay you for the final results of WHAT YOU PRODUCE when you do what you do, then you are well on your way to an entrepreneurial career. To become a true professional, make sure you have mastered the craft, offer as much value as you possibly can, offer your services at a fair but competitive price and over deliver on the expectations of the paying audience. The fastest way to accomplish all three of these is to find someone who is successfully doing what you are gifted at, love to do and can make money at and then follow in their footsteps. Perhaps you can ask them to mentor you. You may have to invest financially in such mentorship or coaching but it's worth it if they can save you all the time and heartache they experienced on the way to success. In days past we called it apprenticeship, but few people do it the same way today. Imogen: Hello my lovely! Yeah, I’m not too bad, thank you. I was just saying to you I’ve got a really bad tummy ache, so I’m like in a massive jumper with a big hot water bottle… and a kitten actually, just curled up on the sofa, nursing myself. Gem: I’m sorry that you’re not well. But that sounds like a really lovely place to be in to recover. Imogen: It’s not not wellness. The annoying bit about it is that it can be quite a regular occurrence. It’s just that my tummy is part of my impairment. So, things like this are kind of, sort of normal. And my go-to coping strategy is to—especially when it’s cold. Just to huddle up and nest myself a little bit… Gem: Yeah, absolutely. Well, I think I came across your work maybe a couple of years ago. I’ve definitely been following you for quite a while… Imogen: We’ve been in touch for a while. Gem: Yeah! And we met at Body Kind last year. Imogen: Yeah, yeah… Gem: So, I’m really excited to get the chance to ask you all my questions. And I guess what I generally start off with when I’m chatting to people is just asking them to introduce how they identify, and I guess what different intersections play a role in them as a person. Imogen: Yeah, okay. I would say I’m a queer disabled femme. I haven’t really kind of started using the term non-binary, but I don’t really identify as being part of a gender binary particularly. I still use the pronouns she/her although they’re not particularly comfortable. But then I don’t find they/them any more comfortable. So, I tend to use a mixture of both of those things. I live in Bristol in the UK. And I have been a disability rights activist for most of my life actually. But I found an online community through Instagram a few years ago. So, I’ve just been writing and sharing stuff there for a while. Gem: Yeah. And I’m really interested in how that came about. You talk about radical body politics which is really powerful and obviously has so many different sides to it. I know you say that you’re anti-diet as well. And sort of your relationship with the medical industry and all those kinds of different aspects… So, it will be amazing to start maybe at the beginning. You say you’ve been involved with disability rights activism for a really long time. How did that come about? Imogen: Okay! Well, I went to into an integrated school. So, I went to school with other disabled children. And whilst my impairment hadn’t been diagnosed, I was already having symptoms. So, I had some learning support needs. It was integrated to a point because we still had this designated building. Maybe now, it might be different. There might be accessible toilets in the toilets. But back then, we had to go back to the pavilion, it was called, in the middle of...

Montreal's genre-defying SUUNS (pronounced SOONZ) recently announced a new album, Felt, with the first single, “Watch You, Watch Me.” I can't wait to hear the new music. If you forced me to define SUUNS, I'd say they make a mixture of indie, kraut, and shoegaze rock, but it's not easy to define them and that's what makes SUUNS special. I hung out with Joseph Yarmush (guitar and bass) and Max Henry (bass) from the band the last time they were in Vancouver touring their fourth record, Hold/Still. We chatted in a busy alley behind The Rickshaw and while I set up, Joe had the cutest conversation about a double rainbow with his young son. How does Joe experience music with his son? Which band member does not like Massive Attack? Which song from Hold/Still did SUUNS work on for over two years? Why are SUUNS songs constantly evolving? Which song off Hold/Still is actually a reworked old SUUNS song from the very first record? What was it like working with an outside producer, John Congleton--for the first time? What delicious meals do these guys cook each other for dinner? How does the band decide who gets to control the music player in the tour van? What are Joe and Max listening to right now? Who do they think is cool? You'll have to listen to find out!
