On this episode of Taste Buds with Deb, host Debra Eckerling speaks with Evan Fox, founder and owner of Yeastie Boys Bagels. With eight locations around Los Angeles, the vibrant food truck is full of delicious New-York style LA bagels. Their creative combinations have fun names - mainly pop culture and music references - to go with them.    When Fox started Yeastie Boys Bagels in 2014, there were not a lot of bagel options in Los Angeles.  What started as a side project with a friend - experimenting with bagels in an LA apartment, and delivering them to tastemakers, mostly in the music scene, and posting funny bagel memes on Instagram – is now a thriving LA business.   “It's been pretty wild; I'm grateful and blessed to be here,” he says. “My whole thing for Yeastie Boys is, ‘How can I make something that people want to eat daily, that's a quick bagel, that's a classic that you'd get in a bodega in New York. … How can I take the old classics and make them more refined [and] more current?'”   Yeastie Boys is known for the New York style bagel. Fox's top three favorite bagels are sesame, egg and an egg everything bagel.    “New York style bagels are very plump, they have got a nice chew, they have a nice sweetness to it, usually from barley malt,” he explains. “They have a nice crust when you bite into it, but it's soft and chewy in the middle.”   Evan Fox shares the Yeastie Boys origin story, along with his personal bagel journey: from developing a love of bagels at a young age - it was his go-to after school snack in Arizona - to discovering NY bagels, when was a touring musician. Fox also talks about what makes a good bagel, playing with pop culture - they recently created a custom menu for a partnership with Netflix's “Nobody Wants This,” the bagel's place in the mainstream, and more.      Check out YeastieBoysBagels.com and follow @YeastieBoysBagels on Instagram.   For more from Taste Buds, subscribe on iTunes and YouTube, follow @TheDEBMethod on social media, and go to JewishJournal.com/podcasts.

Last week as Americans grew increasingly worried about Trump's chaotic trade deals Fox News distracted its audience with stories about dark woke Democrats, a renegade dog-walking Tesla vandal, the negative qualities of Pope Francis, the short-comings of due process and the never-ending deep state persecution of Pete Hegseth. The segments that got the most airtime on the network focused on problems within the Democratic Party. When Fox can't promote anything positive about the Trump administration it falls back on one of its favorite topics - Democrats are terrible. This is a public episode. Two days before the RNC meeting later this month, Mike Lindell's team will join Turning Point USA to educate hundreds of clerks from around the country about going to paper ballots and hand counts. Lindell set up an infrastructure of 300,000 people on the ground ready to help secure our 2024 election. He's doing more than the RNC which has lost five elections in a row. Lindell says candidates should drop out of the GOP race and back Trump. The will of the people is clear. They can't lie and say Nikki Haley has more votes. Even Democrats want Trump back. They remember December 2019 when consumer confidence was the highest in history. Lindell says like Trump or not, you were living pretty darn good in the United States back then. Ronna McDaniel and the RNC had better get behind President Trump. He wonders what is her agenda and the reason she stayed on? The Supreme Court Justices see what's going on in our country. They know they need to make decisions based on our Constitution and keep politics out of it. Lindell expects a 9-0 opinion to keep Trump on the ballot. When FOX, Newsmax and Salem Media went silent after J6, Lindell set up his own platforms, Lindell TV and FrankSpeech. Lindell today announced the debut of his new show debuting Monday, “Lou Dobbs Tonight” weeknights at 7pm Eastern. Social media exploded last night following Jason's appearance on Fox News' Tucker Carlson Tonight. In their conversation, Jason reaffirmed his stance that God fearing Americans can no longer find common ground with fellow citizens that believe men can get pregnant and that secession may be the only answer for Christians. When Fox cut to commercial as Jason was answering Tucker's final question, Twitter exploded in both praise and condemnation on what everyone assumed was Fox's censorship. Jason is here to set the record straight. Robert Kennedy Jr. has filed his paperwork to contest Joe Biden for the Democratic nomination for president in 2024. Jason believes that RFK Jr.'s candidacy will only further underscore the divide between the current radical progressive Democratic party and the rest of America, fortifying his belief that secession should be open for consideration. When Fox was bought out by Disney, there were a good many films that landed up in limbo.  Some of them were pretty big named movies like THE CALL OF THE WILD (2020) starring Harrison Ford which would go on to have some critical success.  But others like the horror film, THE EMPTY MAN (2020), had no major stars nor was it a conventional supernatural thriller.  It was an odd ball of a film with arthouse undertones as well as little that gave it mainstream curiosity.  A former police officer, James Lasombra (James Badge Dale), grieves the death of his wife and son who died in a car accident.  When his friend's daughter goes missing, he agrees to “take on the case” and try to find out what happened.  His discoveries lead to an urban legend called the Empty Man – a supernatural being that will seek out any who calls its name.  As he digs deeper into the mystery, he finds out that a local institute may actually be a cover for a mysterious cult. The film was released in October 2020, which seems fine for a horror film and Halloween, but in the middle of COVID, it drew little audiences.  The marketing for the movie also focused on the urban legend of the Empty Man which left many viewers confused after watching it.  Dark Discussions takes a look at this much maligned film that's slowly being re-evaluated as a possible masterpiece.

The studio panicked in the 11th hour and rewrote the last act of the movie, and the finished product is just as weird as you would expect based on these creative decisions. Awakin Call
Matthew Fox -- Fidelity vs Faith: Bowing to the Heart Over Authority

Awakin Call

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 14, 2020

“Our self-expression is meant to be the manifestation of the silence of our hearts.” Matthew Fox is a pioneering spiritual theologian, author, and perhaps the only man alive who has had this theology systematically singled out and denounced by two successive Popes, only to see a third Pope incorporate it into Church doctrine. His courageous stance on issues like the sacredness of our relationship to the environment, the divine feminine, gay rights, and other controversial issues have sparked a spiritual revolution in the United States and around the world.   Fox is the leading exponent of Creation Spirituality, a more expansive and inclusive perspective on Christian doctrine that brings it closer to the mystical foundations underpinning all religious traditions, and which traces its inspiration back to Catholic visionaries like St Francis of Assisi and Meister Eckhart. His forthcoming book, Julian of Norwich: Wisdom in a Time of Pandemic--and Beyond, is about a medieval mystic woman who lived through the plague of the Black Death, and draws out insights and principles relevant to our modern COVID-19 era. "A theologian way ahead of her time," he writes, "Julian develops a feminist understanding of God as mother at the heart of nature’s goodness." While Matthew’s life has been full of innovation in work, worship, and education, his heart has been anchored firmly in fidelity to service and reconnection, even in the face of opposition and resistance from prevailing Church dogma.  Along the journey, he’s been consistently regarded as one of the most spiritually influential living people, and received numerous awards and accolades, including the Abbey Courage of Conscience Peace Award, whose other recipients include Rosa Parks, Mother Theresa, and The Dalai Lama.  Matthew began his religious training in the Catholic Dominican Order pursuing a Doctorate of Spiritual Theology in Paris at the suggestion of Thomas Merton, the groundbreaking Trappist monk known for his extensive interfaith studies and explorations of mysticism across traditions.  This openness to a diversity of views and emphasis on direct experience perhaps set the stage for the first conflicts with the Catholic Church, when Fox later taught a holistic pedagogy in collaboration with a feminist theologian, a Jungian psychologist, and a physicist.   Some time later, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger (future Pope Benedict XVI) had Fox’s work and writings investigated for heresy -- an investigation that turned up empty after examination by a team of Dominican theologians. When Fox questioned the doctrine of “original sin”, Ratzinger banned Fox from teaching for a year. When Fox failed to condemn homosexuality, embraced feminist theology, and worked “too closely” with Native Americans, the conflict culminated in his expulsion from the Dominican order for “disobedience” several years later. Matthew was received into the Episcopal Church where his innovative outreach and instincts for interconnectedness drew inspiration from rave parties as a vehicle to bring liturgy and church worship back into the lives of young people. He created a series of “Cosmic Masses” where he consciously reinvigorated Western ritual through ecstatic and visceral celebration over music and pre-modern dancing. These worship parties continue to this day and have been held in well over a hundred venues, including the Parliament of World Religions, and touched tens of thousands of participants through a spectrum of themes, including “The Black Diaspora”, “Rumi and Sufi Wisdom”, and “Economic Justice” among many others. One of his greatest contributions has been to clarify and amplify the principles of Creation Spirituality, a paradigm shift brought out in his book Original Blessing that upgrades and reformulates prevailing dogma with broad, positive, and inclusive principles.  Fox’s conception draws on a close reading of Biblical sources, early medieval Christian mystics, and modern science, even as it seeks common ground with faiths and spiritual traditions from around the world. Many highly regarded spiritual figures have proclaimed that this work represents a rescue and recovery of a form of spirituality from within the depths of Christian heritage that has profound relevance for our modern times. Matthew is the author of 38 books, including Julian of Norwich: Wisdom in a Time of Pandemic -- and Beyond (forthcoming), Christian Mystics: 365 Readings and Meditations, and the The Physics of Angels: Exploring the Realm Where Science and Spirit Meet.  His books have been translated into 68 languages and sold millions of copies worldwide.  Join Rahul Brown and Aryae Coopersmith in conversation with this powerful voice of faith and conscience.

EPISODE 115: The High Priest of Khonshu Rey beams out a nocturnal signal to the god Khonshu in the hope that Loonies everywhere heed the call! Yes, it's back to the tried-and-true classic run comic book review with solo Rey analysing one of Moench's classic Volume 1 issues -  PHASE OF THE MOON: WANING CRESCENT LUNAR-PICK CLASSIC COMIC BOOK REVIEW MOON KNIGHT VOL. 1, ISSUE #8 – ‘NIGHT OF THE WOLVES’ Released June, 1981 Written by Doug Moench Art by Bill Sienkiewicz Inks by Frank Giacola Colours by Roger Slifer Letters by Joe Rosen Edited by Denny O'Neill BARE BONES (SYNOPSIS) - courtesy of Wiki Still under the influence of hallucinogenic gas, Moon Knight thinks that an oncoming subway train is a monster. He flattens himself against the wall as it passes, then jumps onto the roof to get to its brain and kill it. In a flash of sanity, he realizes he's on a train. He drops into a car, reaches the engineer's compartment, and knocks out the driver. On his way to his hotel to warn Marlene about the water, he hears voices from a sewer pipe, one of them Crawley's, the other a friend of Redshirt's. The friend flees at the sight of Moon Knight, but Crawley has learned where Ernie, a member of the gang, lives. In a smoke-filled room in Washington, D.C., a group of men speculate on the possibility that the Chicago terrorist gang may strike elsewhere. In Chicago City Hall, waiting for the $25 million extortion payoff, Simon tells Fox that he sent the other two gang members to Ernie's place, ostensibly for supplies but really in hopes they'd get killed in the chaos, which would mean bigger shares for them. At Miegs Fields, one of the men from Washington briefs the helicopter pilot who will deliver the "ransom." At Ernie's place, Crawley breaks in, quickly followed by the two other gang members, who are picking up bottled water. Crawley pushes a row of boxes over onto them and knocks them out. Moon Knight arrives at his hotel. The room is a mess, and the bathroom sink has been left running. Marlene, hiding in the shower, stabs him twice in the back with a shard of broken glass. He knocks her out and ties her up. Crawley arrives and tells him there are only gang members two left, and they're at City Hall. At dawn the chopper drops a sack on the roof of City Hall. Simon and Fox (wearing their masks with air filters) open it. A cloud of tear gas emerges but dissipates in the wind. The man from Washington orders the National Guard to assault the building. Moon Knight arrives, climbs to a rooftop, and hitches a ride on a police chopper to follow Simon and Fox's getaway car. In the car, Simon plans to poison the water supply because he didn't get his money. When Fox protests, Simon shoots him. At the reservoir, Simon has an oil drum full of poison. Moon Knight drops from the chopper and glides down to give him a body blow. The drum rolls toward the water. Simon draws a gun. Moon Knight can close with Simon or stop the drum, but not both! Or can he? He throws a dart, knocking Simon's gun out of his hand, and stops the drum in the nick of time. Three days later, Steven Grant, Marlene, Frenchie, and Crawley watch a crane pull Moon Knight's helicopter out of the lake. "C'est la vie," says Frenchie, "We wished to make some changes in zee design anyway, oui?" MOON RATING (out of phases of the Moon): Rey:

Many of you may have started watching the Showtime series, THE LOUDEST VOICE IN THE ROOM, about Fox News founder Roger Ailes. The problem with it is, that with respect to what Ailes did, what he is credited with accomplishing at Fox, very little of it is true. Sure Ailes understood television and politics. But at core what he did was to take the world of talk radio, combined it with a bit of “blondification” and transferred it to television. When Fox new went on the air in 1996, Limbaugh had already been on the air for almost ten years. Ailes simply exploited the rise and power of conservative talk radio. The Economist said many months ago that, “to understand the Republican politics, get in a car, turn on the radio and drive.” Talk radio, is far more than the viewers that watch even the top rated Fox News shows each night. It's the lens through which millions and millions of its hard core listeners view the world. No one understands this better than the go-to-guy for talk radio, the founder, editor and publisher of Talkers and Talkers.com, Michael Harrison. Back in July of 2017, upon the death of Ailes, Harrison and I spoke about this mythology. My conversation with Michael Harrison:

It will not cost you anything extra, and I can not see who purchased what. Chifox are a British creation which was began by a Mr. O. Millsum back in 1916.  Millsum was breeding Beverens for commercial purposes when he came upon the idea of creating a breed with a long coat of fur that resembled the fur of the true Arctic Fox.  Millsum was one of the founders and president of the National Chinchilla Rabbit Club, and it is said that he built the largest rabbitry in the British Isles for the breed, but resigned as president and sold his Westwood strain of Chinchillas to concentrate on his Chifox breeding program.  Mr. Millsum was most secretive in his breeding program, but authorities believe that Chinchilla, Beveren, Silver Fox (Silver Martens) and Angora were all used in the breed's genetic makeup.  After ten years of breeding , Millsum's goals were nearing fruition, as he had produced the Chifox in white, blue, sable, silver, smoke, chinchilla grey, and squirrel grey.  Two pelts were shown to expert furriers in January 1928, and their remarks were that the fur was quite suitable for trimmings of dresses, coats, and evening cloaks, and more!  The only fur of the time that came close to the Chifox was the Siberian Hare know in the trade as Foxaline.  However, only the flank portions could be used effectivly.  The major drawback to the hare fur was the very poor wearing qualities, being paper-thin and brittle.  Chifox were shown for the first time to the general public at the British Fur Rabbit Society Show held at the Royal Horticultural Hall in Westminster on December 1928, to an amazing reception by both fanciers and the fur trade.  The coat was to be approximately two and a half inches in length, and not at all woolly, nor did the coat have a tendency toward matting.  Texture of the coat was like any normal fur rabbit.  This beautiful rabbit is now extinct. Word of the week: Pretension Plant of the week: Cauliflower Rabbit and Fox http://www.ilhawaii.net/~stony/lore40.html Native American Lore     One winter Rabbit was going along through the snow when he saw Fox. It was too late to hide, for Fox had caught Rabbit's scent.     "I am Ongwe Ias, the one who eats you!" barked Fox. "Yon cannot escape me!"     Rabbit began to run for his life. He ran as fast as he could around trees and between rocks, making a great circle in the hope that he would lose Fox. But when he looked back he saw that Fox was gaining on him. "I am Ongwe Ias," Fox barked again. "You cannot escape."     Rabbit knew that he had to use his wits. He slipped off his moccasins and said, "Run on ahead of me." The moccasins began to run, leaving tracks in the snow. Then, using his magic power, Rabbit made himself look like a dead, half-rotten rabbit and lay down by the trail.     When Fox came to the dead rabbit, he did not even stop to sniff at it. "This meat has gone bad," he said. Then, seeing the tracks that led on through the snow he took up the chase again and finally caught up with Rabbit's old moccasins.     "Hah," Fox snarled, "this time he has fooled me. Next time I will eat the meat no matter how rotten it looks." He began to backtrack. Just as he expected when he came to the place where the dead rabbit had been, it was gone. There were tracks leading away through the bushes, and Fox began to follow them.     He hadn't gone far when he came upon an old woman sitting by the trail. In front of her was a pot, and she was making a stew.     "Sit down, grandson," she said. "Have some of this good stew."     Fox sat down. "Have you seen a rabbit go by?"     "Yes," said the old woman, handing him a beautifully carved wooden bowl filled with hot stew. "I saw a very skinny rabbit go by. There was no flesh on his bones, and he looked old and tough."     "I am going to eat that rabbit," said Fox.     "Indeed?" said the old woman. "You will surely do so, for the rabbit looked tired and frightened. He must have known you were close behind him. Now eat the good stew I have given you."     Fox began to eat and, as he did so, he looked at the old woman. "Why do you wear those two tall feathers on your head, old woman?" he asked.     "These feathers?" said the old woman. "I wear them to remind me of my son who is a hunter. Look behind you--here he comes now."     Fox turned to look and, as he did so, the old woman threw off her blankets and leaped high in the air. She went right over Fox's head and hit him hard with a big stick that had been hidden under the blankets.     When Fox woke up his head was sore. He looked for the stew pot, but all he could see was a hollow stump. He looked for the wooden soup bowl, but all he could find was a folded piece of bark with mud and dirty water in it. All around him were rabbit tracks. "So, he has fooled me again," Fox said. "It will be the last time." He jumped up and began to follow the tracks once more.     Before he had gone far he came to a man sitting by the trail. The man held a turtle-shell rattle in his hand and was dressed as a medicine man.     "Have you seen a rabbit go by?" asked Fox.     "Indeed," said the medicine man, "and he looked sick and weak."     "I am going to eat that rabbit," Fox said.     "Ah," said the medicine man, "that is why he looked so afraid. When a great warrior like you decides to catch someone, surely he cannot escape."     Fox was very pleased. "Yes," he said, "I am Ongwe Ias. No rabbit alive can escape me."     "But, Grandson," said the medicine man, shaking his turtle-shell rattle, "what has happened to your head? You are hurt."     "It is nothing," said the Fox. "A branch fell and struck me."     "Grandson," said the medicine man, "you must let me treat that wound, so that it heals quickly. Rabbit cannot go far. Come here and sit down."     Fox sat down, and the medicine man came close to him. He opened up his pouch and began to sprinkle something into the wound.     Fox looked closely at the medicine man. "Why are you wearing two feathers?" he asked.     "These two feathers," the medicine man answered, "show that I have great power. I just have to shake them like this, and an eagle will fly down. Look, over there! An eagle is flying down now."     Fox looked and, as he did so, the medicine man leaped high in the air over Fox's head and struck him hard with his turtle-shell rattle.     When Fox woke up, he was alone in a small clearing. The wound on his head was full of burrs and thorns, the medicine man was gone, and all around him were rabbit tracks.     "I will not be fooled again!" Fox snarled. He gave a loud and terrible war cry. "I am Ongwe Ias," he shouted. "I am Fox!"     Ahead of him on the trail, Rabbit heard Fox's war cry. He was still too tired to run and so he turned himself into an old dead tree.     When Fox came to the tree he stopped. "This tree must be Rabbit," he said, and he struck at one of the small dead limbs. It broke off and fell to the ground. "No," said Fox, "I am wrong.     This is indeed a tree." He ran on again, until he realized the tracks he was following were old ones. He had been going in a circle. "That tree!" he said.     He hurried back to the place where the tree had been. It was gone, but there were a few drops of blood on the ground where the small limb had fallen. Though Fox didn't know it, the branch he had struck had been the end of Rabbit's nose, and ever since then rabbits' noses have been quite short.     Leading away into the bushes were fresh rabbit tracks. "Now I shall catch you!" Fox shouted.     Rabbit was worn out. He had used all his tricks, and still Fox was after him. He came to a dead tree by the side of the trail. He ran around it four times and then, with one last great leap, lumped into the middle of some blackberry bushes close by. Then, holding his breath, he waited.     Fox came to the dead tree and looked at the rabbit tracks all around it. "Hah," Fox laughed, "you are trying to trick me again." He bit at the dead tree, and a piece of rotten wood came away in his mouth. "Hah," Fox said, "you have even made yourself taste like a dead tree. But I am Ongwe Ias, I am Fox. You cannot fool me again."     Then, coughing and choking, Fox ate the whole tree. From his hiding place in the blackberry bushes, Rabbit watched and tried not to laugh. When Fox had finished his meal he went away, still coughing and choking and not feeling well at all.     After a time, Rabbit came out of his hiding place and went on his way.

Coach Cafe' is thrilled to welcome, spiritual theologian Matthew Fox,co-author of The Physics of Angels:Exploring The Realm Where Science and Spirit Meet.  Many people believe in angels; few can define these enigmatic spirits. In The Physics of Angels:Exploring the Realm Where Science and Spirit Meet, visionary theologian Matthew Fox and acclaimed biologist Rupert Sheldrake — pioneers in modern religious thinking and scientific theory — delve deeper into the significance that angels have for us now. We are entering a new phase of both science and theology, and the subject of angels becomes surprisingly relevant. Both the new cosmology and the old angelology raise significant questions about the existence and role of consciousness at levels beyond the human. When Fox and Sheldrake first held discussions on the topic of angels, they became fascinated by the parallels between Thomas Aquinas speaking of angels in the Middle Ages and Albert Einstein speaking of photons in this century. Calling upon the time-honored works of Dionysius the Areopagite, Hildegard of Bingen, and St. Thomas Aquinas, Fox and Sheldrake translate into modern language the thinking of these great prophets, helping us move into the future with an ecumenical and interfaith understanding that consciousness extends well beyond human. In The Physics of Angels, “Angels are far greater and more powerful beings than we know, and our belief in them can revolutionize our lives and the future.
