Episode Description: In this episode of the podcast, host Mark Baratto sits down with artists Helen and Ben Harrison to uncover the captivating story behind their renowned Harrison Gallery on White Street. What begins as a conversation about art quickly sails into an extraordinary tale of adventure and craftsmanship. "In the 1970s, my husband, Ben, and I spent four years building a thirty-eight-foot sailboat in Costa Rica—a massive project for two gringos in a foreign country. Starting with a bare hull, we designed and constructed this giant sculptural object of functional art using self-taught traditional wood techniques that set the stage for my present work. While traveling and living aboard—which we did for 11 years—I began my transition from boatwork to sculpture." — Helen Harrison Join us as we explore how their life at sea became the foundation for their artistic endeavors, leading to the establishment of a local institution that showcases some of the finest fine art in Key West. Read About Their Journey: Sailing Down The Mountain: A Costa Rican Adventure About Harrison Gallery: Located in the southernmost city in the continental United States, Harrison Gallery has become a Key West staple, earning a reputation as a destination for exceptional fine art. Opened by Helen and Ben Harrison in 1986, this privately owned and operated art studio represents a select group of artists whose work, alongside the Harrisons', creates a uniquely personal and unforgettable artistic experience. It has been 17 years since James Fuentes first hung a shingle out under his own name. In the years since, he has carved out a unique position in the contemporary art world, representing an eclectic mix of older, sometimes overlooked artists, alongside younger, buzzier names. Prior to striking out on his own, Fuentes worked for a handful of high-profile gallerists, including Jeffrey Deitch, whose eye he first caught with an ambitious pitch for a reality television show about artists, an idea that was way ahead of its time, considering it was the early aughts. Fuentes has long been a mainstay of the Lower East Side, which happens to be the same area where he grew up. Between his first smaller gallery on the appropriately named St James Place, and later at a larger location on Delancey Street, he has watched neighborhood undergo seismic shifts. Amid all of the changes, he still regards the Lower East Side as a thriving and incredibly diverse place to live and work. Last year, Fuentes joined the ranks of East Coast dealers heading out West to open a gallery in the burgeoning art scene of Los Angeles. Just as he is set to mark the one year anniversary on Melrose Avenue, another major change is underway: a big move across town in Manhattan to the new gallery hub of Tribeca, into a 3,000-square-foot, ground-floor space on White Street. This week on the podcast, senior reporter Eileen Kinsella caught up with Fuentes to talk about growing up in New York City during the heyday of hip hop and graffiti art, and his unique approach to the art business, alongside the broader growth and changes in the art world at large.

Neil O. Lawner's interest in photography began when he served in the Air Force on Guam from 1966-1968. During that time, Japanese cameras such as Nikon and Pentax were being manufactured and were available at the Base Exchange. He soon became part of the Kodachrome generation and learned the basics of operating a SLR (single lens reflex) camera. Some of his work was noticed by a gallery owner in New Brunswick who provided artwork to some of the big pharmaceutical corporations in NJ. The gallery sold many of his black and white images to these companies over the years, and this orthodontist soon would make a switch in careers to fulltime photographer. Fifteen years ago, when he moved to New York City, he began to capture colorful images of people, culminating in his first self-published book Coney Island, Merriment, Mermaids and Memories in 2019, followed by a second book, Masked in Manhattan, images of people going about their daily lives in the city during the pandemic. Neil joined Soho Photo Gallery on White Street in Tribeca and exhibits there on a regular basis.

Evan Snyderman and Zesty Meyers, owners, and co-founders of the R & Company Gallery, have managed to transform their passion for design into one of the world's finest design galleries. With an obsession for seeking deeper beauty of design objects, and a philosophy based on teamwork, collaboration, and a cross-disciplinary approach, they have defined a full-blown global trade called Collectible Design. In this interview we talk about their creative, and entrepreneurial journey from the B Team, a performance-based glass-artist collaborative group, via the Wild West of the Chelsea Flee market, to exploring design markets in Brazil and Scandinavia. They share the story of how an unexpected sale of Marcel Breuer commissioned furniture, laid the foundation of the gallery we know today.    R & Company exhibits historic designers and represents 22 contemporary artists, creating unique works, limited, editions, and site-specific installations. The present exhibition at 64 White Street includes Katie Stout, a young Brazilian designer Zanine de Zanine and Jeff Zimmerman. 424. We interview Clint Bruce, author of Afro-Creole Poetry in French from Louisiana's Radical Civil War–Era Newspapers:A Bilingual Edition. Collected here for the first time, seventy-nine poems published in the Civil War-era Afro-Creole New Orleans newspapers L'Union and La Tribune--most unavailable anywhere but in archives--bring to life a close-knit, politically progressive French-speaking community of artists and intellectuals whose cultural and legal legacies were monumental. The original French poems appear here alongside Clint Bruce's sensitive English translations, mindful of meaning, meter, and sound. A comprehensive introduction, biographies of the poets, and extensive annotations immerse readers in Civil War-era Louisiana. In his research for the volume, Bruce unearthed crucial issues of La Tribune long thought lost and discovered the extent of a poetic hoax undetected for nearly 150 years. How does a craft brewer walk the fine line between introducing new beer creations and giving the public what they want? In this week's 919 Beer Podcast, Joe Ovies, Adam Eshbaugh and Wayne Holt travel to White Street Brewing Company in Wake Forest to find the answer to just that question.  Owner Dino Radosta has been brewing and BOTTLING beers since 2012.  White street is known for Kolsch German Ale, which won the 2014 World Beer Cup Gold Award,  Hoptimist IPA and Relaxsession session IPA.  Recently, they introduced Poolside, a lite summer lager in a can that you can take places bottles aren't allowed.  Adam, Joe and Wayne are then joined by Jason Faulkner and Will Haddock of White Street who, along with Radosta, discuss the challenge of satisfying public demand while keeping things creative on their end.   Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome to the Elevator World News Podcast. This week’s news podcast is sponsored by elevatorbooks.com: www.elevatorbooks.com PROPOSED MANHATTAN JAIL TOWER SPARKS HEATED DEBATE A proposed 45-story jail tower at 125 White Street in Lower Manhattan sparked heated debate during public hearings earlier this month, with Tribeca, Chinatown and Soho residents raising concerns including cost, shadows cast by the structure and a loss of history, The Architect's Newspaper reports. Part of Mayor Bill de Blasio's plan to close Rikers Island and replace it with four borough-based jails, the White Street structure would replace 13- and nine-story towers that make up the Manhattan Detention Complex, also known as The Tombs, which includes an Art Deco/Art Moderne tower. Together, the four new jails would cost roughly US$11 billion, while renovating Rikers, some tower opponents said, would cost only US$1 billion. Building a tower would result in larger inmate cells, better lighting and ventilation and additional programs. A de Blasio spokesman said Rikers, home to approximately 9,000 inmates, is "too archaic and old" to be renovated.
