The Cinematography Podcast Episode 308: Jessica Lee Gagné Cinematographer Jessica Lee Gagné is an essential creative force behind Severance on Apple TV+. She has an expanded role in the show's second season with a producer credit and directs the pivotal episode 207, “Chikhai Bardo.” The series' unique look and world-building is meticulously crafted through extensive testing and close collaboration between her and showrunner Ben Stiller, who also directs the majority of episodes. For Severance Season 2, Jessica embraced a darker aesthetic, intentionally tweaking the look from the previous season. Even within the artificial office environment of Lumon, she pursues a blend of natural realism and heightened visuals, favoring practical, in-camera effects whenever possible. Location shooting for the episodes “Woe's Hollow” and “Sweet Vitriol” required flexibility due to changing weather conditions. Unexpected foggy weather worked in the crew's favor while shooting “Woe's Hollow” and enhanced the spooky atmosphere of Irving's nightmare sequence. Inside the Lumon offices, lighting is pre-planned as part of the production design, with lights built into the ceiling and the set. Season 2 introduces more complex and colorful lighting cues compared to the first season, especially in the finale. Vibrant green and blue lighting creates a feeling of chaos during the “Choreography and Merriment” marching band performance, and intense red emergency lighting strobes down the halls as Mark and Helly attempt their escape. “Red is a color that we don't use in the show in general,” notes Jessica. “You have this association with love, passion, intensity with the color red. And then in the final shot, we land in this deep red moment with them, that was transferred onto film in the end and rescanned to give it an actual authentic feel.” Jessica decided she wanted to direct for the first time on season two, despite feeling nervous about it. She chose episode 207 “Chikhai Bardo,” which explores Gemma and Mark's past and depicts how Gemma is tormented at Lumon in different severed tests. “This was something that I really deeply wanted,” she explains. “I realized that on this show with the crew that knew me, the cast that knew me, with Ben (Stiller) supporting me and the producers as well, that this opportunity would never come up for me again in my life. I really needed to just go for it and give it my all.” Jessica also was director of photography for the episode, since she felt so familiar with creating the show's look. However, the dual role was challenging. “That was harder,” she admits. “And then working with myself was weird. I realized on set that everything was going so fast.” There was no pausing for a separate director-cinematographer discussion after takes, which meant turning to others for validation and support. Directing the cast was a rewarding experience and they welcomed her leadership. Jessica had extensive conversations with actress Dichen Lachman (Gemma) beforehand to explore her character's emotional state and shifting personalities within the episode. A significant element of episode 207's visual language involves sequences depicting Mark and Gemma's past, which were captured on film. While Severance primarily uses digital cameras, Jessica opted for both 35mm and 16mm film for the flashback moments. Borrowing a Bolex camera from the gaffer, she and director Ben Stiller shot some of these intimate sequences between Mark and Gemma on the fly. Jessica is currently in the process of directing her first feature. She will always have a deep appreciation for cinematography. “I feel like I have so much respect for that craft," she says. "After being in it for 15 years, I know what goes into it. I know how you have to be such a giving person to do that. And I really do love it so much.” You can see Severance on Apple TV+ Hear our previous interview with Jessica Lee Gagné about Severance Season 1.

Jean describing her book of poetry “Sandprints At Ebbtide” I hope the readers of “Sandprints at Ebbtide” will find these poems, songs and Scripture passages a source of faith and inspiration in confronting the painful life lessons of aging, loss, perceived failures and even death, both for themselves and those they love. Faith guides us to a place of comfort and peace as we reach for meaning and consolation. These poems explore my personal life challenges in the light of God's grace and redemption. Mother Julian of Norwich summarized all this for me in her still timely quote centuries later, “All shall be well, and every manner of things shall be well.” And St. Paul reminds us that “He whose power is at work in us, is powerful enough, and more than powerful enough, to carry out His purpose beyond all our hopes and dreams.” * The poems, Redemption I and Redemption II launch us into these themes which continue to unfold throughout. It is my wish that you discover joy, meaning and purpose in each and every one of your life lessons. Link to buy Jean's 2 books: https://tinyurl.com/56zxts7e Last Thursday, April 19th, 2024 I lost my best friend of almost half a century, Barbara Price Negro. In the midst of my grief and pain, I wrote a poem in her memory, which I would like to share here with my FB friends. In Memory of Barbara Somewhere on the other side of the veil Beyond that mysterious Golden Gate A party is happening, a gala celebration A time of music and dancing, and the Merriment of reunited loved ones. There is the tinkling laughter of many angels And joyous bells chiming everywhere All because someone special has arrived Even as we mourn our loss. We need to have her back But far above they are chanting her name. Our view is not the same. Your Humble Host thinks it's the perfect time to dip back into the Bing Wing of the Library of Sound (LOS) Volume 303 and find an appropriate Tax time show. It's one of our short Bing shows as Bing comes up with a way to make paying taxes a time to jump for joy. Well, sort of. In our picture with this show Bing seems to be resigned to waving good bye to his moola. From February 15, 1955 listen as Bing sings and talks about tax time.

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've got a rare trio episode for you, since two of our guests created something very cool together: Jo Firestone, Marissa Paternoster, and Joe Steinhardt. I'll start with Jo Firestone, the actor, writer, comedian, podcaster, game inventor, and probably some other stuff that I'm forgetting, who you may have seen on the show Joe Pera Talks With You or, like a million other things. She's done stand-up specials and albums, she's written for The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon, and she hosts the game-centric podcast Dr. Gameshow. Firestone is currently the head writer on After Midnight, the comedy/game show hybrid that airs late every night on CBS. In other words, she's busy. But not too busy to chat with her friends Marissa Paternoster and Joe Steinhardt about their new graphic novel, Merriment. You may recognize Paternoster are the singer and guitarist for the amazing, recently broken up band Screaming Females, and Talkhouse readers and listeners may even recognize her illustrations, which have appeared on the site over the years. Paternoster continues to make music, but the focus of this chat is Merriment, her first graphic novel. Paternoster put her eerie, singular images to a story by her old friend Joe Steinhardt, head of the long-running independent label Don Giovanni Records, which has been home to a number of incredible bands over the past two decades, including Screaming Females. These three have a fun, loose chat about Merriment, which in case I didn't say it yet, you should definitely check out, as well as Steinhardt's not-so-secret desires to be a comedian, Paternoster's can't-fail movie idea, how Firestone was once tasked with selling St. Louis pizza with a New York attitude, and a game I'd never heard of called “Somebody Pooped in the Salad.” Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Jo Firestone, Marissa Paternoster, and Joe Steinhardt for chatting. You'd think if you have Joe Steinhardt from Don Giovanni Records and Marissa Paternoster of Noun and Screaming Females, you might talk a lot about their legendary impact on New Brunswick's basement scene. Or at the very least about their great new graphic novel, Merriment. Nope. This is New Jersey is the World, so we're talking about the Northeast Corridor train line! Wine. Food. Merriment. And a touch of southern French sun. That just about sums up this episode. We're exploring Occitanie - the sun-kissed southern French region that stretches from the western Rhone through Languedoc and Roussillon into South West France.Taken as a whole, it's the world's largest vineyard and makes around 5% of global wine output. In the past, these regions have been criticised for focusing on quantity over quality and being out of touch with the modern wine world. But things have changed significantly in recent decades, as the vineyard has been drastically shrunk and successful producers have focused on quality, innovation, value, indigenous varieties and the future. And that's not all this part of the world is known for. It also boasts a mighty fine gastronomic scene. So yes, you guessed it: we couldn't resist. In this episode we're serving up six dishes inspired by southern French ingredients: mushroom arancini, Mediterranean shellfish stew, cod with beurre blanc and winter ratatouille, Toulouse sausage casserole, duck shepherd's pie and Roquefort. Then we find Occitanie wines to pair with those different dishes, neatly illustrating the diversity of the region in the process, from elegant sparkling wine to lusciously sweet Vin Doux Naturel via a brand new style of Picpoul de Pinet that we didn't know about.Along the way we hear from expert Matthew Stubbs MW plus growers Jean-Claude Mas (Les Domaines Paul Mas) and Pauline Nadal (Domaine Nadal Hainaut).Somehow we touch on manure, fried brians (yes, you read that right), Asterix, bootcamps, touchy-feely labels, wines with soul and a nitrogen generator. Thanks to the Occitanie Region for sponsoring this podcast. From our hilarious matching sweater incident to the nuanced debate over Jack Daniel's place on the whiskey throne, this episode captures the essence of holiday spirits - and we aren't just talking about the kind in our glasses. As we navigate a mini gift exchange and reminisce about the bourbon flavors that tantalized our taste buds, we invite you to join the laughter and learning that unfolded in the studio.'Tis the season for tastings, and we didn't shy away from the tough questions, like the true merit of opening collectible bottles. Picture this: a signed bottle, a blind taste test, and a few rounds of friendly banter as we crowned our Booker's of the Year. Let's not forget the anticipation building for our bourbon of the year podcast - your palate won't want to miss it!As we wrapped up, we couldn't help but reflect on the bonds that bourbon builds. It's not about the labels or the limited editions—it's the shared experiences, the spiced laughter, and the cherished memories. This week, we're turning our attention to breakfast cereals and snacks. Kellogg, the company responsible for cereals like Frosted Flakes and snacks like Pringles, in early October split into two companies: WK Kellogg and Kellanova. WK Kellogg maintained the company's cereal products, while Kellanova kept snacks. Snacks have been big business for companies, but with changes to eating habits brought on by obesity drugs like Ozempic and Mounjaro, these companies may face some struggles ahead. WK Kellogg and Kellanova are expected to report earnings this week, so we're speaking with Pamela Kaufman, a Morgan Stanley equity analyst who covers the packaged goods industry, to find out if the separation of the snacks and cereal businesses will prove to be a winning combination and what reduced appetites may mean for investors. Then, we're queuing up for Disney's earnings report. Merriment has gotten significantly more expensive with costs for admission to places like Disney's theme parks rising faster than prices for food and gasoline. What will this week's earnings from Disney tell us about the cost of having fun? Robbie Whelan, who covers Disney for WSJ, joins us to discuss how Disney's higher-than-ever amusement park prices and declining television business will affect the company's bottom line. Lastly, we're looking at China's upcoming consumer and producer price index reports to learn how a slowed economy in China impacts investors here in the states.
