In this powerful and heartfelt conversation, Priya, Ava, and Anaid dive deep into the roots of our toxic culture. Together, they explore the roles that disconnection, collective trauma, and survival-driven conditioning play in shaping the way we live and relate. Is our detachment from nature part of the problem? Could it be that our nervous systems — biologically wired for survival — are still operating in modes of protection, fueling cycles of fear and burnout? Or is there a missing piece we've yet to uncover? Relevant links and resources: Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind by Yuval Noah Harari The Molecule of More by Daniel Z. Lieberman and Michael E. This show aired 6/2/24 on the News Radio 570 WSYR, YOUR HEALTH MATTERS radio show with host, Karl Sterling. "The Molecule of More" by Daniel Z. Lieberman and Michael E. Long explores the powerful role of dopamine in shaping human behavior and experience. The book delves into how this neurotransmitter drives our desires, ambitions, and emotions, affecting everything from our love lives and creative pursuits to our addictions and mental health. In this interview, Michael E. Long explains that dopamine is responsible for the pleasure we feel from new experiences and the motivation to pursue future rewards. They categorize its influence into two main areas: the “desire circuit,” which motivates us to seek out new things, and the “control circuit,” which helps us manage our resources to achieve long-term goals. Throughout the interview, Long illustrates several points with examples from everyday life and scientific studies, demonstrating how dopamine can lead to both positive outcomes, like innovation and progress, and negative consequences, such as addiction and destructive behavior. He also discusses ways in which understanding dopamine's effects can help us make better choices and improve our lives. Overall, "The Molecule of More" provides a comprehensive look at the chemical that plays a crucial role in shaping our thoughts, actions, and overall well-being. http://www.karlsterling.com
In this episode we discuss the necessity for scientists to embrace the realm of magic in understanding the complexities of the human mind. Drawing on ancient wisdom and modern science, Dr Lieberman unravels how storytelling, fairy tales, and the unconscious mind offer profound insights into human behavior and cognition. We think through stories, and so, without stories, interdependent life would not be even possible. Our human biology demands stories to keep surviving and evolving. With thought-provoking insights and anecdotes, Lieberman advocates for a holistic approach to understanding the human psyche, urging paradigm shifters to embrace the magic within and beyond scientific inquiry.Dr. Daniel Lieberman is a clinical professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at George Washington University. He has published over 50 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters and is the coauthor of the international bestseller The Molecule of More. His second book, Spellbound: Modern Science, Ancient Magic, and the Unconscious Mind explores the intersection of neuroscience and mysticism as it relates to our experience of our unconscious.

At the moment there is no more talked about neurotransmitter than dopamine. Our collective obsession with dopamine has led to a huge amount of content generated around so-called “dopamine fasts”, how to leverage dopamine for motivation, worries about dopamine-driven addiction to devices, pornography, food etc. In addition, there is a tremendous amount of confusion and misunderstanding around what dopamine actually does within the brain, especially with respect to the experience of pleasure. Professor, psychiatrist and author, Dr. Daniel Z. Lieberman, joins us for a discussion of the major themes explored in his and Michale E. Long's book, The Molecule of More. In this conversation we cover: why Dr. Lieberman wanted to write this bookwhat dopamine is, its function in the brain and the structures that regulate its functiona comparison of the dopamine system with neurotransmitter systems that are thought to be more related to "here and now" psychological experiences (e.g., serotonin, oxytocin, endorphins etc.)the neurobiology & genetics of “dopamine-driven” personalities vs. more “here and now” personalities/temperaments and the benefit of having a diversity of personalities in society, the workplace, a relationship etc. how the information and/or goals pointed to by dopamine can be integrated into one's values to generate actionable wisdom, especially around long-term goals the connection between dopamine and mental disorders with a special focus on ADHD, including the effective treatment of ADHD with compounds that promote the release of dopamine within the brainthe potential for our society to create challenges with attention & concentration given the infinite potential for dopamine-driven distractionhow we can learn to be a responsible steward of our dopamine system in a world where there is increasingly unlimited access to food, sex, pornography, information, news, visual stimulation (YouTube, TikTok etc.)how to create a sense of future & achievement without falling prey to immediate gratificationDr. Lieberman's view of so-called "dopamine fasting" and his own self-compassionate journey with respect to managing various pulls related to dopamine whether “healthy” psychological processes can become addictions through the lens of dopamine (e.g., entrepreneurship, starting companies, forming/beginning relationships)the fascinating relationship between testosterone & dopamine Bio: Daniel Z. Clinical Psychiatrist and Author, Dr. Daniel Lieberman, joins us on the Aging Today Podcast to discuss his latest book Spell Bound. As we grow older, we become more introspective and focus more on our inner world. It flows from having more time for reflection, feeling a greater sense of responsibility for our own well-being (as opposed to blaming external factors), and simply having more life experience. For those who age well, this change of focus can lead to something we generally attribute to mystics and sages: The State of Transcendence. Click AgingToday.us today and listen!
The unconscious mind is still very much an enigma, but it influences our lives in ways we can only begin to imagine. Much of what we experience, our moods, what we like and dislike—most of who we are originates with the unconscious. But it's not always working in our favor. Today, psychiatrist Daniel Z. Lieberman, coauthor of The Molecule of More, and author of his latest book Spellbound leads us down a new path: one where we learn how to recognize the influences of the unconscious, making it an ally in helping us become the people we were meant to be.

There are two parts of the mind: the conscious and the unconscious. While the former dominates your attention, the latter actually occupies far more of the brain, influencing your mood, generating inspiration, and making you who you are, all behind the scenes. My guest would argue that to become all you're meant to be, you have to make your unconscious mind your ally and that this may be life's most important task. His name is Daniel Z. Lieberman, and he's a psychiatrist and the author of Spellbound: Modern Science, Ancient Magic, and the Hidden Potential of the Unconscious Mind. Today on the show, Daniel first offers an overview of the nature, function, and study of the unconscious. From there we discuss Carl Jung's perspective on the unconscious, and his ideas around its archetypes and shadows. We then get into the way that things which are connected to magic and the supernatural, like fairy tales and tarot cards, can be seen as manifestations of the energy of the unconscious and as age-old attempts to confront and understand it. We end our discussion by talking about the quest for individuation, which requires bringing together the conscious and unconscious minds, and how to go about tapping into the power of the unconscious to become a kind of magician yourself.Resources Related to the EpisodeDaniel's previous appearance on the show: Episode #429 — Taking Control of the Brain Chemical That Drives Excitement, Motivation, and MoreKing, Warrior, Magician, Lover: Rediscovering the Archetypes of the Mature Masculine by Robert Moore and Douglas GilletteAoM's series on the king, warrior, magician, and lover archetypes AoM Podcast #598: Journeying From the First to the Second Half of LifeAoM Podcast #335: Exploring Archetypes With Jordan B. Dr. Dan Lieberman is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at George Washington University. He is the Co-author of the international bestseller The Molecule of More, which has been translated into 20 languages. He is also the Author of the recently published Spellbound: Modern Science, Ancient Magic, and the Hidden Potential of the Unconscious Mind. Highlights Dr. Lieberman explains how his interest in the topics found in his new book started in the 1980s when he stumbled upon the works of Carl Jung and was blown away. He doesn't talk about synchronicity because he wanted to talk about mysticism from a scientific viewpoint. In his book, Dr. Lieberman says that “the purpose of life is to become your true self”. This is harder than it sounds because we tend to learn through suffering. The unconscious mind has a profound effect on how we experience life and who we are. The pain and suffering of life exists in the service of growth. “The shadow” part of us forms when we push away all the things that we think is wrong to be. But at some point, we have to deal with this shadow. The more we allow ourselves to feel the darkness within ourselves, the easier it is to let it go. The polarization that is happening now is because people are afraid to acknowledge their shadow. The closer we get to our true self the more unique we become. Cultivating awareness is essential. Inspiration can change the course of our life. Inspiration can change history. The vast majority of our lives is driven by our unconscious. Dr. Lieberman talks about the three forms of meditation that he discusses in his book including focused awareness. Links Dr. Daniel Z. Lieberman's website Dr. Daniel Z. Lieberman's LinkedIn

I have been looking at how we change as we grow older as part of a natural process. In this episode, I talk about how so many aspects of ourselves go through a maturing process that affects our mind-body along with how we perceive things and how we perceive ourselves. Highlights I have come to see that as we grow older, many aspects of us change, but our core stays the same. The Money Energy Tuneup that I did recently deeply affected me as well as others who attended or listened to the recording. In the 1980s, I developed my crystal business using my intuition. It was the first one like it and this required that I do something unique and innovative. After the crystal business, as I created something else, I tended to follow the rules that I learned from other people, and I did this for many years. Now I see that I never reached my original level of success because I wasn't following my own inner guidance. In Spellbound, the author says that the purpose of life is finding your true self. I'm trying to stay true to that as I form The MetaMind Circle. Don't think there's something wrong with you or that you've done something wrong, you are just going through a normal journey of self-discovery. Part of finding the real you is finding the part of you that's connected to the Universal Force, which from my point of view, is love. It's interesting to realize how everything has changed over the past decades. We're all going through some major changes now that are going to affect all of us and how we view our lives. The chaos that we're going through is different from chaos of the past because so many things are changing at once. Adapting well to change is important in this day and age. Finding your true self means finding your light, your talent – and not denying it. You don't have to follow the rules all the time if the rules don't feel right to you and if you're trying to discover your true self. No one can tell you what's right for you — you have to discover that for yourself by listening to your inner promptings. Buckle up, folks! We've got a big episode today! This week we are diving right into the deep end with the question, "Why is Enough Never Enough?" Why are we constantly feeling inadequate and unsatisfied both with what we have and who we are? To find the answer we're going to get a little nerdy about neurology and talk about the brain processes at work - how dopamine is meant to serve us, but can easily be preyed upon in our tech-heavy world to turn us against ourselves. When we understand the how and why behind our impulses, we can also understand what we want to do about it moving forward - and we wouldn't leave you hanging without some practical advice on rising above in order to be the people we want to be. Tons of resources to go alongside this episode, so you don't just have to take our word for it:BooksIndistractable by Nir EyalThe Molecule of More: How A Single Chemical in Your Brain Drives Love, Sex and Creativity - and Will Determine the Fate of the Human Race by Dr. Daniel Z. Today's guest on the Mads Singers Management Podcast is Dr. Erika Michalski, also known as The Consultant Barbie. She is the founder and Chief Encouragement Officer of Strategically Authentic, which loves helping people bring their vision and goals to life. With her unwavering passion for authenticity, she empowers people to show up as they are, see what they can do, what they are capable of, and leverage their skills so that they can move up to their next big thing. Dr. Erika will surely liven up your party as she loves strategic planning and is excited to share it with the world. Strategic planning - a fun party trick that Dr. Erika loves to death, is often put on the backburner by companies and business owners until the very end or when their problems start popping up because they have been ignored for too long. Although it's become a buzzword, being authentic will allow you to impact the people around you and the things you do, while chasing the same carrot as everyone else may seem ideal and more accessible. However, many will not feel satisfied when they reach their end game and feel like they wasted time and effort on something unworthy. Rather than giving in to what society dictates as a measure of success, we should focus on our direction. Often, we look up to other people we admire and try to emulate them, and while there isn't anything wrong with that, we would make much more impact when we show up as ourselves rather than imitating someone else. To be authentic, one needs to show up as they are, don't let others define your success, and while it's not wrong to grind for your goals, ask yourself these questions: Are you pushing because you want to? Are you moving because you're supposed to? Investing in your people is a must because they are the ones who will drive your business or even sink it. Regardless of whether they decide to stay or leave, it's essential to make people feel valued. Don't fall for trendy and generic professional development that you see being paraded around. Instead, spend time with your staff and see where you can take them from there. But before promoting someone, make sure that you will be able to communicate why you are doing that to provide them value and an opportunity to grow. Even the least interested leader will take up the mantle when given clarity on why they are granted that role. The same goes with delegation. Being given clarity and acknowledged will allow people to flourish more.Key Learning Points: Although it's not new, despite becoming a buzzword today, Dr. Erika says that your contributions will be most effective, and your existence will be most impactful when you show up as yourself, not as a deluded version of someone else. - 03:31 Dr. Erika says that authenticity invites you to be more reflective and intentional about your choices in your personal and professional life. - 04:09 Dr. Erika says that you are the owner of the direction you are going. - 05:21 Dr. Erika adds that authenticity is the decision to learn from other people but not necessarily emulate them. - 05:41 Dr. Erika says we have become weirdly obsessed with the idea of not being content with the things we have. - 09:43 Dr. Erika shares that if you cannot train your brain to the here and now, to be present, you will only be pursuing and not be content with what you have. - 13:32 Dr. Erika says that unhappiness comes when you no longer know who you are because you rely on other people's success metrics rather than your own- 19:34 Dr. Erika says that if your identity is tied to a singular point (being an entrepreneur or being someone's significant other), then it is not sustainable- 27:40 Mads highly recommends that businesses and entrepreneurs invest in their people, especially managers because most people don't develop their managers because they are not provided with the proper training and guidance. - 28:06 Contrary to the famous saying that the best salesman won't make the best sales manager or the best engineer won't make the best engineering manager, Mads believes that if someone has the skills and the personality to learn how to be the best engineer or salesperson, then they can also learn how to become the best manager with the proper training, tools, and support.. - 34:44 Resources Mentioned:First, Break All the Rules: What the World's Greatest Managers Do Differently by Marcus Buckingham and Curt Boffman The Molecule of More: How a Single Chemical in Your Brain Drives Love, Sex, and Creativity―and Will Determine the Fate of the Human Race by Daniel Z. In this episode, Dr. Michael Maddaus interviews Dr. Daniel Z. Lieberman, psychiatrist and author of the best-selling book, The Molecule of More. Why are we obsessed with the things we want and bored when we get them? Why is addiction “perfectly logical” to an addict? Dopamine, according to Dr. Lieberman. This chemical pushes us to achieve greatness, but it also can lead to our downfall. Listeners learn fascinating details about the general science of dopamine and the role it plays in directing behavior. Dr. Lieberman also discusses other “brain pleasure molecules” (serotonin, endorphins, oxytocin, and endocannabinoids) and shares how mental wellbeing critically depends on the skillful management of these brain chemicals. “The Resilient Surgeon” is a program from the Society designed to inspire cardiothoracic surgeons to be their best selves, in and out of the OR, using scientifically proven tools and recovery strategies of the world's top performers. Dr. Lieberman can be reached at www.danielzlieberman.com. View the TED Talk, “What Makes a Good Life? Lessons from the Longest Study on Happiness,” mentioned during this episode. In Episode 154 I discuss the needs and wants of your future self and your present self and how the chemical dopamine plays a role. This came up after reading the book The Molecule of More by Daniel Z. Lieberman and Michael E. Long.
Joe and Amy sit down with Dr. Daniel Z. Lieberman, professor and vice chair for clinical affairs in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at George Washington University and author of the mind blowing book “The Molecule of More: How a Single Chemical in Your Brain Drives Love, Sex, and Creativity and Will Determine the Fate of the Human Race”. He explains how dopamine is the culprit behind addiction to drugs, sex, gaming, social media and moreover how we can use control dopamine to combat desire dopamine and recover. Lieberman also discusses the link between creativity and “madness”. Joe celebrates 24 years sober.
The One Molecule That Could Jeopardize The Human Race!!!! Have you wondered why people become addicted to drugs, sex, success, porn, and social media? It all boils down to one molecule: Dopamine or as my guest, today calls it “the molecule of more.” Dopamine is a double-edged sword because it certainly has many positive benefits like creativity, taking action, falling in love, excitement and ambition. But dopamine, if not managed correctly, can lead you to the depths of divorce, despair, destruction, and even death. My guest today is Daniel Z. Lieberman, M.D. He is professor and vice chair for clinical affairs in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at George Washington University. Dr. Lieberman is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, a recipient of the Caron Foundation Research Award, and he has published over 50 scientific reports on behavioral science. He has provided insight on psychiatric issues for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the US Department of Commerce, and the Office of Drug and Alcohol Policy, and has discussed mental health in interviews on CNN, C-SPAN, and PBS. We are going to talk about dopamine, which is the main subject of Daniel's book called, "The Molecule of More: How a Single Chemical in Your Brain Drives Love, Sex, and Creativity―and Will Determine the Fate of the Human Race." In this episode, we discuss what dopamine, is and how it's responsible for things like addiction, cravings, love, sex, pleasure and social media use. He shares why people who end up super successful end up suffering with their mental health and even turn to suicide. We get into how to handle desire and achievement in a healthy way as well what drugs and social media actually do to the brain. So fasten your seatbelt, get out your pen and paper so you can learn to have a healthy relationship with dopamine and let's get this conversation going with Dr. Daniel Z Lieberman. Topics discussed: How do drugs and substances impact the mind What is dopamine? Peri-personal space in the brain Extra-personal space in the brain Daniel's thoughts about people who turned to things like drugs, alcohol, suicide, just to deal with their problems after they achieve something so meaningful. How to handle things such as ambition and achievement properly, and not to focus on wanting more Why do opioids cause people to really get addicted? Dopaminergic pleasure Control dopamine circuit Desire dopamine circuit Genetic predisposition What are the few things that have been successful in helping people rewire their pleasure and desire circuits? What can people do to help others who are suffering from addiction? The different kinds of love The different phases of the human sexual cycle Daniel's take on social media What effect does social media have on the brain? How to have a healthy relationship with dopamine The observing ego Delusions and psychosis Takeaways: The single most important thing in this world was the human mind. In order to get something you don't have, the first step is you've gotta want it so that you're willing to put in the work. Dopamine is interested in what we don't have, and as soon as what you want becomes what you have, dopamine shuts off. The kind of people who can most afford a beach house are least able to enjoy it. The main purpose of the brain is to keep us alive, keep us functioning, keep us reproducing, basically keep us obeying dopamine. Craving is when you feel that there is nothing that can make you feel good, and nothing can make you feel satisfied unless you use that substance. What happens with addiction is that we have an imbalance between the desire and the control circuits. The real key to helping people overcome addiction is going to be in the kinds of new relationships they're able to form. Love is a dopaminergic phenomenon. It's not so different from getting very, very high on drugs. Healthy behavior is a habit. You can't jump to the finish line in one leap. You've got to start out with doing small things consistently, and that will strengthen your brain and enable you to do big things under extraordinary circumstances. Always be honest with yourself. Drug overdose is the number one cause of death among people under the age of 50 in the US and Canada. Effective treatment options for those afflicted with substance abuse issues are limited and lack government participation. But, why? All of us want to feel good and many people who become addicted are just trying to combat their depression and pain. Lisa’s guests, Dr. Daniel Lieberman, and Mike Long describe the upside of dopamine and its role in human existence. Then, Travis Lupick unpacks the story of how the city of Vancouver, Canada, defies the stigma of drug consumption and helps substance abusers get clean.
The Molecule of More by Daniel Z. Lieberman is all about Dopamine, the chemical of desire that always asks for more—more stuff, more stimulation, and more surprises. In the pursuit of more, it is undeterred by emotion, fear, or morality. Dopamine is the source of our urges, the biology that makes an ambitious business professional sacrifice everything in pursuit of success, or that drives a satisfied spouse to risk it all for the thrill of someone new. Simply put, it is why we seek and succeed; it is why we discover and prosper. Yet, at the same time, it's why we gamble and squander. If you're interested in the role dopamine plays in your life then you'll enjoy this podcast.

Why are we obsessed with the thing as we want - only to be bored when we get them? Why is addiction perfectly logical to an addict? Why does love change so quickly from passion to indifference? Why are some people, die-hard liberals and others hardcore conservatives? Why are we always hopeful for solutions even in the darkest times—and so good at figuring them out? The answer is found in a single chemical in your brain: dopamine. Dopamine ensured the survival of early man. Thousands of years later, it is the source of our most basic behavioUrs and cultural ideas—and progress itself. Dopamine is the chemical of desire that always asks for more—more stuff, more stimulation, more surprises. In pursuit of these things, it is undeterred by emotion, fear, or morality. Have you ever desperately wanted something, and then as soon as you get it, or as soon as you achieve it, you seemingly toss it aside and move on to the next new thing? In this episode we explore the powerful brain science behind why this happens. We look at dopamine, how it shapes your behavior, why it causes you to desire certain things and motivates you to achieve new things, but also why it can be dangerous if it becomes too imbalanced. We share strategies for enhancing and harmonizing with your brains “dopamine circuitry” and much more in this interview with Dr. Daniel Z. Lieberman. Dr. Daniel Z. Lieberman is a professor at George Washington University. He has published over 50 scientific reports on behavioral science and provided insight on psychiatric issues for the U.S. Government. He is also co-author of the best-selling book Molecule of More, which discusses the effect dopamine has on the human desire and the human brainThe simple concept of “up versus down” and how it cascades through the way we all live and interact in the world The “paripersonal” space - everything within arms reach - things that you own, possess, and control. When you look “down” into the paripersonal space - you experience these things in “the here and now"When you look “up” you look into the “extra personal space” - beyond yourself - things beyond the here and now that require effort, planning, and motivation to get, acquire, or achieveThe idea of dopamine as the “reward molecule” is WRONGDopamine is not the molecule of reward, but rather the molecule of DESIRE and MOTIVATION People who are dopaminergic might have addictive personalities - excessively eating, gaming, watching porn, etc. A brain on dopamine is like a high performance sports car - it can produce spectacular results, but it breaks down easily What is a dopaminergic brain? A brain with a highly active dopamine system. How does dopamine impact our love circuitry and our experience of love? All dopamine derived pleasures DON'T LAST - as soon as what we desire in the future becomes what we have in the present, dopamine shuts down - and achieving it becomes a let downIf you’re spending most of your time in the dopamine circuitry - you’re ALWAYS focused on WHATS NEXTUnderstanding the brain is the most important thing we can do Highly dopaminergic people like ideas, concepts, and tools - not emotionsEmotional intelligence is the perfect counterbalance to being highly dopaminergicA more advanced strategy to spend more time in the here and now would be mindfulness meditationMeditation is all about clearing your thoughts of future clutter and focusing like a laser on the here and now. Meditation strengthens the circuitry in the brain responsible for processing the here and now. When those circuits are strong it becomes easier to shift into them.Homework: If you are dopaminergic - spend more time focused on the fine arts - fine arts are a great way to see the synthesis between dopamine circuitry and the here and now circuitry.Bonus Homework: Take up a hobby that involves the creation of something. Painting, cooking, playing an instrument, woodworking. These hobbies have fallen out of favor in our modern world. If you want to get the most out of your brain - you have to appreciate its structure, which has been built up for millions of years of evolution. Find ways to do things with your hands. Tinkering, making things. When you’re engaged in a sport or physical activity you’re also harmonizing the here and now (moving your body) + using dopamine to develop strategies to score points and defeat your opponents. Why are we obsessed with the things we want and bored when we get them? Dopamine is the chemical of desire that always asks for more — more stuff, more stimulation, and more surprises. In pursuit of these things, it is undeterred by emotion, fear, or morality. Simply put, it is why we seek and succeed; it is why we discover and prosper. Yet, at the same time, it’s why we gamble and squander. Tech has a part to play with dopamine too. Daniel Z. Lieberman finds it as hard as any of us to put the dopamine-providing phone down. So he wrote a book on it... What I love: he has a potentially life-changing proposal in the book: for how we can channel our dopamine more effectively. What is it? Listen on to find out.
