For years, Dr. Russell Kennedy tried everything to treat his crippling anxiety – therapy, medication – nothing worked. It wasn't until he stopped searching in his head and started looking to his body that everything changed. Today, Russell helps others heal by targeting what he calls “background alarm,” a residue of unresolved childhood trauma stored in the body. On this week's episode of Everyday Better, Leah sits down with Russell to explore why traditional treatments for anxiety often fall short, and what it really takes to heal from the inside out. Russell shares the somatic tools and mindset shifts that have helped him and his patients regulate their nervous systems, reconnect with their inner child and break free from the anxiety loop. He also explains why healing starts not with fixing your thoughts but by feeling what's been buried in your body all along. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to feel truly relaxed and content in the evenings–without needing a drink to get there?   If you rely on a glass (or a bottle) of wine to relax after work, you're not alone. Using alcohol to cope with stress is a habit that many women fall into–especially those who feel like they never get a break.   But too much alcohol leaves you feeling overwhelmed and on edge. Mornings are filled with negative self talk, anxiety and making promises to “cut back” that you don't know how to keep.   It's easy to think that alcohol is the best or even just the fastest way to manage anxiety. Because the first drink feels like such a relief. But it's a slippery slope. The more anxious you feel, the more alcohol seems to help. But the more you drink, the worse your anxiety gets.   Today I'm re-publishing an interview I did with Dr. Russell Kennedy on his show, The AnxietyRx podcast. You'll learn: How alcohol affects your cortisol levels (and how cortisol affects anxiety) How to rewire your brain's relationship with alcohol so you have less desire to drink when you're stressed Small, practical strategies that help you relax, unwind, and reset before you decide to have a drink   Find Dr. Russ on socials @theanxietyMD. Anxiety. It's something we all experience at one point or another, but for some, it's a constant companion, a heavy weight that can feel impossible to shake off. For many, anxiety becomes a familiar pattern of worrying thoughts, tightness in the chest, and an overwhelming sense of dread that lingers in the background of daily life. But what if everything we've been told about anxiety is only scratching the surface? In this episode of The Happier Life Project, we explore a radically different approach to anxiety with Dr. Russell Kennedy, a physician, neuroscience expert, somatic intuitive, certified yoga instructor, meditation teacher, and professional stand-up comedian. Dr. Kennedy has spent decades grappling with chronic anxiety, and his own journey to understand and heal it led him to develop a groundbreaking method for treatment. He shares his insights in his Amazon #1 bestselling book, The Anxiety Prescription (or Anxiety Rx for our U.S. and Canadian listeners). Dr. Kennedy's approach challenges the traditional understanding of anxiety, proposing that it's not just a mental health condition, but an “alarm stuck in the body.” This shift in perspective has transformed how he heals himself and his patients. In this conversation, Dr. Kennedy explains how anxiety is often rooted in childhood trauma and presents that all anxiety is, at its core, separation anxiety. He introduces the concept of the "alarm-anxiety cycle," describing how it keeps us trapped in a never-ending loop of stress and panic. But here's the potential game-changer: Dr. Kennedy emphasizes that healing isn't about changing your thoughts—it's about changing how you feel in your body. He shares his powerful philosophy, “When you get anxious, look into your body,” and walks us through how somatic work—body-focused practices—can help us quiet the alarm and break free from the cycle of chronic anxiety. Throughout the episode, Gabby Sanderson and Dr. Russell Kennedy dive into the profound link between anxiety and addiction, exploring how anxiety often fuels harmful coping or masking mechanisms. They also discuss how to make peace with the alarm in your body, even when the person or people responsible for it aren't around, or are not capable to talk things through. Packed with practical advice, deep insights, and transformative tools, this episode will empower anyone struggling with anxiety, burnout, or addiction. If you've ever felt like anxiety is controlling your life rather than the other way around, Dr. Kennedy's approach could shift your perspective and give you the clarity and tools to heal. How much time, energy and money have you spent on talk-therapy and medications trying to deal with your anxiety?   Most people (doctors included) think anxiety is caused by a combination of genetics and stressful or traumatic events. It's a thinking problem that must be understood before it can be solved. So we spend countless hours combing through childhood traumas, assessing attachment styles and experimenting with substances to balance our brain chemistry.    With nothing to show for it. Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health diagnosis in the United States.   But anxiety isn't in your head, as most people assume. There is an alarm going off in your nervous system that causes overwhelming sensations of fight or flight, doom and gloom. The brain is simply projecting those feelings into whatever you're thinking about.    Healing anxiety requires you to address the root cause, which is the full-body, present-moment experience in your nervous system—not the story you're telling yourself about why you feel the way you feel.    Dr. Russell Kennedy is here to explain where anxiety lives in your body and how to use simple, somatic practices to create a sense of safety and calm in your nervous system so that you are no longer held hostage by your own mind.   What daily updates from me? Send us a textI just recorded a fascinating episode about anxiety that I had to share with you. I've been diving into this incredible book called "Anxiety Rx" by Dr. Russell Kennedy, and it's completely shifted how I think about anxiety management. Here's what blew my mind: We've been approaching anxiety backward!Instead of trying to think our way out of anxiety, we need to start with our bodies first. You see, when we experience trauma (and yes, that includes things like rejection or feeling shame – stuff we've all been through), those emotions get stored in our body as "alarms." Sometimes these alarms go off and we don't even know why. What happens next? Our brain tries to "help" by creating what Dr. Kennedy hilariously calls "brain droppings" – all those worrying thoughts that are really just distractions from what we're feeling in our body. The solution? Feel, don't think. I know, I know – easier said than done! But there's this beautiful practice Dr. Kennedy suggests:Place your hand on your heart (or wherever you feel the anxiety)Take slow, deep breathsSimply say to yourself: "I am safe in this moment"It's about treating that anxious part of yourself like you would a scared child – with compassion and understanding, not judgment. In this episode, I break down:The ALARMS system (what creates anxiety in the first place)Why worry is just a distractionPractical tools to work with your body instead of your mindThe ABCDE method for anxiety managementWant to learn more? This week I've decided to re-release an episode all about anxiety. My guest is Dr Russell Kennedy, he's a medical doctor, neuroscientist and importantly someone who previously suffered with crippling anxiety for over 30 years.  I'm re-releasing this episode for two main reasons. Firstly I'm noticing that a lot of people are struggling with anxiety at the moment, especially in a world that often feels out of control. And secondly, on the back of that initial episode coming out, Penguin Random House in London was so impacted by the conversation that they contacted my guest and have been working with him to create a brand new revised edition of his book, which has just come out all over the world. It's called The Anxiety Prescription: Calm Your Mind, Soothe Your Nervous System and Learn To Thrive. I really wanted to support the release of this book because I think that Russell's rather unique approach is proving transformative for so many people.    If you ever feel anxious, whether that's a low-level worry, a sudden fear, or full-on panic, can you sense where it's coming from in your body? Perhaps your chest feels tight, or your gut feels uneasy. Or, perhaps, you have no idea. Russell believes that understanding where this feeling lives inside your body is the key to treating anxiety – for good. Russell insists anxiety isn't a disorder of the mind. Our worries are merely a symptom – and one that keeps us in our heads and away from the real problem. He favours the term ‘alarm' and says we need to find where the alarm is in our bodies. This alarm is a physiological pattern that's been left by events in our past, usually in early childhood. It signals to our brain that we aren't safe – and so our mind gets to work trying to think us out of danger. Russell shares his own journey through anxiety. He talks about how growing up with a father who was schizophrenic and bipolar, left alarm signals, imprinted in his body. And, for over 30 years he searched for relief from his anxiety. But nothing worked.   In Russell's view, most treatments for anxiety, including medication and CBT, fail in the long term. And, he thinks this is because they don't address the root cause.   For Russell, healing starts by finding out where anxiety lives inside your body and during our conversation, Russell walks you through how exactly you can start doing that.   We also discuss the simple things that parents can do to help their kids grow up feeling ‘seen, heard, loved and protected'. And, we also discuss the value of activities like breathwork, meditation and yoga, and also some promising therapies such as Internal Family Systems and Somatic Experiencing.   Russell's core message has the potential to be transformative - that it's more effective to use the body to calm the mind, than the mind to calm the body. Russell is an MD and Anxiety/Neuroscience Expert.  As a physician, somatic intuitive, certified yoga instructor, meditation teacher, and a professional stand-up comedian who struggled with crippling anxiety for decades and has finally healed, he is here to personally guide people through non-traditional treatments for anxiety.  Using a combination of neuroscience, somatic work and psychedelics, he's uncovered a brand-new way of approaching and healing anxiety in himself and his patients. Instead of your anxiety completely controlling you, he will show you how to completely control your anxiety. He is also the author of the book Anxiety Rx A New Prescription for Anxiety Relief from the Doctor Who Created It.   Here are some of the things we talked about in today's podcast:  Anxiety is deeply rooted in the body and requires a somatic approach for effective treatment. The alarm anxiety cycle explains the connection between trauma, body sensations, and anxious thoughts. Psychedelics and alternative therapies offer potential solutions for anxiety relief, but somatic therapy is a crucial foundation for healing. Understanding the body-mind disconnect and addressing childhood trauma are essential for managing anxiety. The resistance to body-based therapy and the role of addictions in avoiding self-love are important considerations in anxiety treatment. Psychedelics can be a potential treatment for anxiety, but the timing and approach are crucial. Anxiety creates a sense of control, and psychedelics take away that sense of control, making it challenging for individuals with anxiety. Uncertainty is the foundation of healing, and embracing uncertainty is essential for overcoming anxiety.   Book : https://www.amazon.co.uk/Anxiety-Rx-Prescription-Relief-Created/dp/1734426543/ref=asc_df_1734426543/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=499348463277&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=11067959462576997982&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=2372&hvtargid=pla-1001395589482&psc=1&mcid=2c7796345a5d38529003224b9d23db83&th=1&psc=1   (Website) home (mykajabi.com) (LinkedIn) Dr. Russell Kennedy - Russell G Kennedy B.Sc, MD | LinkedIn (Youtube) Dr Russell Kennedy - THE ANXIETY MD - YouTube (Tiktok) Dr. Russell Kennedy (@theanxietymd) | TikTok (Facebook) Facebook (Podcast and most recent Social media post) Russell Kennedy, MD + Anxiety/Neuroscience Expert (@theanxietymd) • Instagram photos and videos

Today, I am blessed to have Dr. Russell Kennedy here with me. He is a medical practitioner who also holds a degree in neuroscience and is dedicated to assisting those with mental illness. In addition, he is the author of the book Anxiety Rx, a certified yoga instructor, a speaker with the National Speakers Bureau. For many years, he worked as a doctor during the day and a stand-up comedian at night, appearing in comedy clubs all over the country. His expertise is anxiety because he too suffered from it for a long time and wants to prevent others from going through what he did. He is well-known as The Anxiety MD.  Dr. Kennedy grew up with a father who had a lot of challenges and essentially faced many challenges himself. His father had schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and had a lot of trauma in his environment growing up. One of the reasons Dr. Kennedy became a physician was his feeling of impotence watching his dad decline over and over and he wanted to have power over illness somewhat. In this episode, Dr. Kennedy speaks about his experiences with mental illnesses. He also talks about his challenges growing up with a mentally challenged father and how he was able to transform into the man of medicine he is today. One of his teachers eventually became his patient and they had a laugh about the past. His seventh-grade bully also came to him as a patient. Meeting him was one of his biggest lessons he learned while practicing medicine. He realized that the bully was traumatized from childhood and took it out in the only place that he could. You cannot compare traumas. [13:00] The Biggest Enemy in Healing Anxiety You cannot expect a book to heal your anxiety. It only provides you with the framework, the work is yours to do. The biggest enemy in healing anxiety is an overprotective ego. An overprotective ego doesn't let you go back and experience the same pain that you were used to. Unless you can go back and feel it, you can't bring it to the surface, a place where you can start changing. You cannot change them unless you use feeling to change them. [29:13] Changing Your Physiology in Combination with Mindset The biggest thing in changing one's physiology is breathing. As soon as you focus on your breath, it naturally slows down. The mind usually runs too quickly that the body has no choice but to breathe quickly, shrinking down your chest. When your chest shrinks, it sends a message to the brainstem that you are in trouble. Your breathing becomes very shallow. [39:05] Understanding the Root of Anxiety, "Body Alarms", and Healing A lot of people don't even think to look at their body because their mind is usually moving too fast to process anything. When you are anxious or alarmed, you must investigate your body and find the cause. A lot of people who are of senior age haven't even thought of looking at the anxiety in their bodies. The mind reflects how the body feels. If you have an alarm in your system that's been there due to past trauma, your mind is going to react to it repeatedly until it becomes its go-to. [1:02:39] Unconsciously Reliving Trauma through Mind Regression If you have chronic stress like a lot of people, especially those who had a traumatic or abusive past, your mind gets pushed back into the time when you experienced such things. There is a theory that states that if you experienced a significant trauma as a child, part of you stays locked at that certain age until it gets brought back up. Mirror work deals with this by reminding yourself that you are living in the present. AND MUCH MORE! Talking points: anxiety, suicide, mental illness, neurology, culture, psychology This was SUCH a thorough and enjoyable interview. Always a pleasure to get the practical yet caring advice from Dr. Kennedy, someone I've known for a long time. If you or someone you know has been diagnosed or deals with anxiety, this is THE episode for you. We cover all the ways anxiety, the body, and the mind are connected, where to begin helping yourself (or others) with those anxious feelings, what the therapy and personal development industries often miss out, and way way more. (00:00:00) - Intro and Russell's defining moment(00:04:03) - How Russell dealt with the complexities of a schizophrenic father(00:11:33) - How anxiety is a manifestation of something much deeper(00:15:38) - What are some of the most common anxiety myths?(00:18:35) - What is the actual purpose of anxiety?(00:21:54) - How do you talk to people who dismiss anxiety and trauma?(00:33:37) - Do you think kids are more anxious than ever before?(00:40:10) - What do we do for kids knowing that distraction culture will likely worsen?(00:47:30) - What do you mean by “anxiety isn't a feeling”?(00:51:11)  - Anxiety vs Alarm(00:58:26) - Where do you begin helping someone with anxiety?(01:08:17) - Is there a difference between anxiety and stress within the brain? (01:12:36) - Russell's final thoughts on anxiety  Dr. Russell Kennedy, aka “The Anxiety MD” specializes in the art and neuroscience of helping people recover from anxiety disorders. He knows anxiety from the inside out, as he developed his own anxiety disorder as a result of growing up with a dad with severe schizophrenia.  Dr. Kennedy has degrees and advanced training in medicine, neuroscience, and developmental psychology—but it's not all science, as he is also a certified yoga and meditation teacher and was a professional stand-up comedian for over a decade (no joke!) In his award-winning book and audiobook, ANXIETY RX, he shows a practical, actionable program for anxiety relief that incorporates a combination of the latest in neuroscience with the grounding wisdom of the body with the ultimate goal of relieving the anxious thoughts of the mind. Using neuroscience (think "The Body Keeps the Score") and blending that science with a more artistic approach he learned through living at a temple in India, taking psychedelics, and being a natural and gifted intuitive, Dr. Kennedy gives a unique and never before seen understanding of what anxiety truly is,  and further, exactly how it can be successfully treated. If you ever feel anxious, whether that's a low-level worry, a sudden fear, or full-on panic, can you sense where it's coming from in your body? Perhaps your chest feels tight, or your gut feels uneasy. Or, perhaps, you have no idea. My guest on this episode, believes that understanding where this feeling lives inside your body is the key to treating anxiety – for good.Dr Russell Kennedy is a medical doctor, neuroscientist, and someone who suffered with crippling anxiety for over 30 years. He is the author of Anxiety RX: A New Prescription For Anxiety From The Doctor Who Created It and has recently launched MBRX, an online course to help people permanently heal their anxiety.Russell insists anxiety isn't a disorder of the mind. Our worries are merely a symptom that keeps us in our heads and away from the real problem. He favours the term ‘alarm' and says we need to find where the alarm is in our bodies. This alarm is a physiological pattern that's been left by events in our past, usually in early childhood. It signals to our brain that we aren't safe – and so our mind gets to work trying to think us out of danger.Russell shares his own journey through anxiety. He talks about how growing up with a father who was schizophrenic and bipolar, left alarm signals, imprinted in his body. And, for over 30 years he searched for relief from his anxiety. But nothing worked. In Russell's view, most treatments for anxiety, including medication and CBT, fail in the long term because they don't address the root cause. For Russell, healing starts by finding out where anxiety lives inside your body and he walks you through how exactly you can start doing that. Given how prevalent anxiety is now across society, I think this is a profoundly important conversation. I hope you enjoy listening.Support the podcast and enjoy Ad-Free episodes. Today's guest is Dr. Russell Kennedy, aka “The Anxiety MD.” Dr. Kennedy specializes in the art and neuroscience of helping people recover from anxiety disorders. He knows anxiety from the inside out, as he developed his own anxiety disorder as a result of growing up with a dad with severe schizophrenia. Dr. Kennedy has degrees and advanced training in medicine, neuroscience and developmental psychology —but it's not all science, as he is also a certified yoga and meditation teacher and was a professional stand-up comedian for over a decade (no joke!) In his award-winning book and audiobook, ANXIETY RX, he shows a practical, actionable program for anxiety relief that incorporates a combination of the latest in neuroscience with the grounding wisdom of the body with the ultimate goal of relieving the anxious thoughts of the mind.    Today we discuss how to understand and heal your relationship with anxiety, how to discover where your anxiety comes from, common mistakes people make when trying to reduce their anxiety, the difference between stress and anxiety, how to regulate your nervous system in the moment as well as ways to reduce your anxiety long term and much more.   Thanks to today's sponsor: Paleovalley: Visit www.paleovalley.com and when you enter in the code “Doug” at checkout you will get 15% off.  What to Listen For:   00:00 Intro 02:00 What to do if you are feeling anxious RIGHT NOW 03:52 Why he thinks focusing on your anxious thoughts can be problematic 10:42 What's causing your anxiety? 14:40 Tips for coping with anxiety  19:25 How to know if you struggle with anxiety 24:50 The difference between stress and anxiety  28:15 How does childhood impact your ability to self regulate as an adult 32:55 Healing your relationship with anxiety 42:50 Why you should practice strategies for reducing anxiety 45:40 The difference between anxiety and fear  50:50 What you can do during moments of panic Episode Resources: Connect with Dr. Russ | Website, Instagram,   Follow me on Social Media: LinkedIn Instagram Twitter ⚠ WELLNESS DISCLAIMER ⚠ Please be advised; the topics related to mental health in my content are for informational, discussion, and entertainment purposes only.
