We're breaking down the effects of toxic masculinity. Our guest, Zachary Wagner helps us redefine a healthy sexual ethic within the Christian faith, particularly in the wake of trauma & purity culture. Drawing insights from his book, Zachary explains how traditional teachings about sexuality can often dehumanize men and women. We propose a rehumanizing approach that honors God and embraces a full personhood perspective. Key Points Discussed: Purity Culture and Its Pitfalls Beyond Sexual Behavior to a Proper Sexual Ethic Dehumanization in Traditional Teachings About Sex Rehumanizing Sex in Marriage Why Some Fear Sexual Intimacy in Marriage Listener Takeaways: For Singles: Understand and develop a sexual ethic that honors yourself and others beyond mere adherence to rules. For Married Couples: Explore how to engage in your sexual relationship that is rehumanizing and considers the holistic well-being of both partners. Disclaimer: This conversation discusses sensitive topics that may not be age-appropriate for younger viewers/listeners. In this podcast, Dean interviews Zachary Wagner, author of Non-Toxic Masculinity: Recovering Healthy Male Sexuality. Zachary hails from Chicago and currently lives in England as a PhD candidate at Oxford. He is also the editorial director of the Center for Pastoral Theologians, where he co-hosts the CPT Podcast. He is a researcher, writer, and ordained minister who discusses post-evangelical discipleship, theological formation, and speaking against abuse in the Church. As the #MeToo movement erupted and decades of male sexual sin against others was exposed, many Christians were shocked as the #ChurchToo movement followed—we learned that much sexual sin and abuse was happening even within the Church. From small churches to megachurches and international ministries, numerous scandals were exposed involving the faithful experiencing sexual harassment and abuse at the hands of Christian men. Combine this with an ongoing conversation in the Church about “purity culture” and its effects on a generation of young Christians, and Zach found himself with a lot of questions that needed answers, which he explored in his book. As Dean and Zach jump into these hot topics, they grapple with some of those questions: Where did “purity culture” come from, and why? What was good about purity culture, and what wasn't good, in retrospect? In defining masculinity, what is toxic vs. non-toxic masculinity? How can we live out being men, made in the image of God, in healthy and holy ways? What do our masculinity and sexuality have to do with fatherhood? What does Jesus's life and example teach us about masculinity? As this discussion unfolds, we learn a lot about what is going on in our culture at this moment, what has been going on in the Church, and how we can find hopeful and healthy ways to move forward as men, living into our God-created nature, and doing so in a way that serves and blesses the world. We hope you enjoy this fascinating conversation about some very tricky topics, and are encouraged in your manhood through it! ---------------------------------------------- Website: https://impactus.org/ Check Our Resources for Men: https://impactus.org/resources/ ---------------------------------------------- Follow us on Social Media: Facebook Instagram LinkedIn Twitter This Is Me TV

Toxic masculnity, or the idea that men are entitled to things like sex, abound in our culture today--even in our faith spaces. In this episode Zachary Wagner confronts the toxic masculinity found in purity culture and paints a better way forward.
In this episode we're joined by Zachary Wagner to talk about Non-Toxic Masculinity. Zach is editorial director for the Center for Pastor Theologians, a doctoral candidate in New Testament at the University of Oxford, and the author of the book that we discuss in this episode, Non-Toxic Masculinity: Recovering Healthy Male Sexuality (published by IVP). Over the course of our conversation, Zach explains to us how Toxic Masculinity is dehumanizing, turning women's bodies into objects of male sexual desire, and turning men's minds into that of animals. Zach is therefore keen to offer a vision of masculinity that pushes back against the popular Christian vision of masculinity that comes from Purity Culture, which perpetuates Toxic Masculinity within Christian subculture. Zach also powerfully shares his own personal story from which his thoughts and reflections stem. Team members on the episode from The Two Cities include: Dr. John Anthony Dunne, Dr. Grace Emmett, and Dr. Logan Williams.
On this episode: Nate and Aaron don't have time for buffoonery. Our Guest: Zachary Wagner, an American in England, writer, researcher, and ordained minister.
