It is one thing to know that you have ADHD, to know the symptoms, to know the impulsivity, to know the behavior, to know all those things.  But knowing doesn't exactly enable you all the time on how to do things differently. While the Bible doesn't specifically mention ADHD, it does discuss the importance of self-control and the use of wisdom and our faith makes a way to make change. In today's episode, Lacy discusses how the Bible has an answer as to why this is and how we can move forward this year in our faith and with ADHD. Foundational Scripture: Who is wise and understanding among you?  By his good conduct, let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth.  This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, and demonic.  For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder in every vile practice. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace. Have you heard about the "ADHD tax?" It's not an official tax, but it's sure getting a lot of time on social media lately! The "ADHD tax" refers to the accumulation of unwanted, additional expenses that are incurred because a person has ADHD.  Like, all the expenses we rack up because we've forgotten to pay the bills or we got distracted and lost track of our overdraft fees or that oil change the car needed but we postponed, and it caused the car to break down... all of these cost us money, time and patience! In today's episode, Lacy Estelle discusses how we as ADHD'ers have a huge blind spot, almost an "out of sight, out of mind" mentality, and it causes us a lot of grief in our lives especially in matters that impact our money.  Lacy explains how: We don't have much of a concept of how our habits compound because we don't see it in real-time. We don't know exactly how to map the steps out to get to the future we want, and that keeps us stuck. We struggle pushing good habits into our long term memory. Lacy also shares some practical insight from her experience on how to form new necessary habits as a person with ADHD, and how to work on lessening the "ADHD tax" that's stealing from your future! As an ADHD person (or someone who cares for an ADHD person) you may have heard the term, "Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria."  Psychology Today says that people with rejection sensitivity dysphoria have an emotional reaction to negative judgments, exclusion or criticism beyond what most people feel.  It can trap us into constantly thinking we have to take on the weight of someone else's rejection, and change and morph into the person they want us to be.  In today's episode, Lacy discusses questions you can ask to better assess the truth and reality of rejection, identify signs of how we are getting stuck in emotionally charged situations that encourage RSD reactions, and how to recognize that rejection is not always rational.  She also offers ideas for coping with RSD, through management, medication and counseling. Living with ADHD can be a life of taking three steps to every other person's one step in order to function in the world. It's also common to live with the concept of being judged for not measuring up to a standard we just can't meet on our own. These struggles can cause us to be impulsive and make rash choices, and as a result, they can come into direct conflict with being a person of faith. In today's episode, Lacy discusses how her faith in God and ADHD collided when she let her ADHD take the wheel and she walked away from her faith.  In her perceived rejection by God, she marched down a road of self love and self-satisfaction.  A life-changing consequence of those choices helped her to realize that her life wasn't going the way she wanted it to and she not only had to critically re-examine her problems with Christianity, but also find how to reconcile it with her ADHD. So many of us who have ADHD spend a large part of our lives focusing on all our shortfalls and all the things that we can't seem to accomplish as easily as everyone else. It comes as no surprise how easy it is then to form a really poor conception of who we are as a person and where our worth comes from in society today. In today's episode, Lacy talks about how she hid her ADHD from the people who cared about her the most and how once she realized it was ADHD, she was able to piece together her identity apart from her struggles. It is possible to form your identity apart from your ADHD; listen as Lacy shares her story.
