In a time of great injustice and a burning planet: what can we do to strengthen or reimagine solidarity? From grassroots action in post-apartheid South Africa, to India's, Brazil's and global movements for land rights, fossil fuel phaseout and climate just alternatives: what can we learn on what works and what doesn't?In this episode we hear from three wonderful climate justice activists and thinkers exploring this question. Najma Mohamed, Maduresh Kumar and Amanda Segnini bring a wealth of experience from different parts of the globe. They reflect on what it means when you move from local organizing to international science-policy spaces on development, nature and climate (Najma), Majority World alternatives building (Madhuresh) and global land rights campaigning (Amanda), and what we would hear if we would truly listen to grassroots movements.Tune in for unique perspectives on the question of solidarity in times of climate breakdown and key ingredients for a more just world: from remaining authentic and accountable, to the importance of emancipatory political education and global spaces that challenge historic power imbalances and build solidarity in heart and head: this conversation gets to the heart of what isn't working and what solidarity could look like. So grab a coffee or tea and listen in on the conversation!Credits: The People vs Inequality Podcast is a co-production between Barbara van Paassen (host, creator) and Elizabeth Maina (producer). This episode of the podcast kicks off a new feature called "Second Look", where we replay selected talks from past Ancestral Health Symposium conferences, that we think will interest you. This talk was presented by Todd Becker at the 2014 Ancestral Health Symposium meeting in Berkeley, California.  The title is:  "Myopia: A Modern Yet Reversible Disease" Myopia is also called near-sightedness. It's a refractive defect of the eye, where close up objects are in focus, but more distant objects appear blurred.  Glasses or contacts  are typically prescribed to correct this condition -- although in reality they don't actually correct the underlying problem. They are just a crutch that aids you in seeing more clearly.  And often they just make the underlying problem worse, so stronger lenses are needed.Todd wore glasses for my his myopia, starting in high school, and over time the eye doctor kept increasing strength of the prescription... until he discovered how to get rid of them in his forties.    The first part of talk is about about the increasing incidence and causes of myopia, including the underlying biology of how the eye becomes myopic by increasing in axial length, due to environmental factors such as poor vision hygiene -- spending too much time reading and looking at screens up close. The second half of the talk builds on this biological understanding to reverse the process, describing in detail how to use an active focusing technique to reverse myopia and restore normal vision.  The method was adapted from research and practices used by others. Todd first wrote about his success and the active focusing approach in 2010, on the blog, GettingStronger.org   It's one of many applications of a general biological principle known as hormesis - the judicious application of controlled low-dose stress to make the body and metabolism more resilient in different ways. The talk also indicates how the same principles can be used to reverse hyperopia, or far-sightedness, where one has trouble focusing on fine print or objects up close.  Something that many people encounter as they get older. This talk on Myopia Reversal remains the single most popular recorded talk on our Ancestral Health Society YouTube channel, with well over a million views and 4000 comments.  The comments fall into three main categories:* A small number are from skeptics who don't believe it is biologically possible to reverse myopia.* A larger number are from viewers who applied the technique with success, and either reduced their glasses prescription or got rid of their glasses or contact lenses for good.* And there is another group with questions from those interested in trying the technique but are unsure about certain details.  For thesse people, there is an FAQ post on my blog that answers many of those commonly asked questions.  Resources:* Blog posts connected with the talk:* An annotated summary of the videohttps://gettingstronger.org/2014/08/myopia-a-modern-yet-reversible-disease/* easier to read copy of slides* references and links to related blog posts* Frequently asked questions and a very detailed guide to the active focusing techniques* https://gettingstronger.org/2016/03/faq-for-vision-improvement-by-hormetism/* Scientific articles on the biology of myopia:* Birnbaum, M.H. As business mentors how do we build curriculum – and how do we create generations of clients whose performances improve upon those that came before them? Business Is Good with Chris Cooper, and today's topic provides insight into how we create content, how we audit that content, and how we then upgrade it.Much like the story of the tortoise and the hare, we need something or someone to compete with and measure ourselves against. Building curriculum that we improve upon with each generation of clients, and then auditing that content and improving upon it, allows us to set ever higher benchmarks for our clients. With each generation of clients, we are introducing new hares into the race. And the goal is for them to exceed your standards, and surpass your estimations. That's good business mentorship.Let's learn how we can identify what content we should be teaching, how we test that content to know if it's any good, how we build courses around that content, and also how we audit ourselves so that we can all improve. Let's dive into the show. "If you're coaching anything, you need to outgrow this mindset that the best experiences and ideas and stories and concepts and courses have to come from you. If you could spend 1 hour doing something – or 10 hours – and get the same results, which one would you pick? Of course, most of us would choose one hour. But in truth, in business, that rarely happens. As business owners, we have often been brought up with a job mindset, believing that the harder we work at our jobs, the more successful we will be. The reality is that our job, as owners, is to focus on outcomes: how do we put those first, and what are the fastest ways to get there? Shifting our mindset involves learning not to feed the amygdala (that part of our brain that feeds off our 'fight or flight' problems) as a CEO or entrepreneur, i.e. looking for problems to solve and stressors to resolve.Rather, we need to be more strategic in our approach to how we reinvest our time and set future outcomes that will help us grow our business – and accurately reflect a worthwhile return on our time investment. Chris is hammering home an appreciation that your greatest asset is your time, and that from there you need to figure out the fastest way to get to your business outcomes in order to see real growth. Let Chris show you how to work smarter, not harder in this enlightening episode of Business Is Good. But they say they can't because they can't get their gymnast on board with nutrition counseling. It's a touchy subject since you obviously want to respect their feelings and emotions. But at the same time, at this level of sport, when we're talking about underfueling, adequacy, and injuries...it becomes a safety concern and a barrier to continuing in the sport. Working with gymnasts is unlike any other sport; mentally, physically, and emotionally. You really have to be knowledgeable and have an understanding of gymnastics (whether as a PT, MD, or Dietitian) to successfully work with these athletes. Gymnasts often need coaxing and convincing from their parents to support their nutrition. Even if they are resistant at first, when they see and feel themselves performing and feeling better, gymnasts tend to "buy-in" to the nutrition support coming from their parents. Ultimately, nutrition is something that has to work for your gymnast. Something she can enjoy and do day in and day out. Our approach to fueling your gymnast will feel like a breath of fresh air; it's realistic AND sustainable. In this episode you'll hear: What happens when parents allow gymnasts to make all the decisions about nutrition vs when parents step-inThe dangers of just doing what your gymnast wants when it comes to nutrition in this sport. The most common reasons your gymnast doesn't want to work on their nutrition and how to overcome them.  Links & Resources Blog: 5 Gymnast Fueling Mistakes Parents Made in 2022 The Balanced Gymnast Program®   for level 5-10 female gymnasts Connect with Christina on Instagram @the.gymnast.nutritionistPrivate 1:1 Nutrition Coaching for High-Level Gymnasts

In this episode of the Well-Led Schools podcast I am joined by Corey Tavella, Principal of Thomas More College in South Australia where, together, we'll be exploring the guiding principles of ‘Well-Led' schools.  When adopted and applied, these principles can help schools to “lead with wellbeing in mind,” begin to transform the culture from within and better influence positive outcomes in student learning and school achievement.    Well-Led Schools… Know that healthy, well and engaged staff positively influence student learning: Carefully consider how to weave staff wellbeing into the fabric of the school Seek the input and consultation of all staff Recognise that awareness is the first key to change Are led by highly-skilled and emotionally intelligent leaders Understand that staff wellbeing is a joint responsibility Have shared vision and a ‘Wellbeing Action Plan' Promote collaboration and nurture strong relationships Engage their staff   About the guest Corey Tavella is currently the Principal of Thomas More College in South Australia, a relatively large 7-12 school of almost 1100 students from 7-12 (co-ed). This is his fifth year as Principal, having been a Deputy Principal at two schools, one all-boys and one all-girls. One of his key tenets of leadership is presence which, he believes, lends itself well to staff wellbeing; in aiming to be present for his staff, he wants to ensure they all know they are heard, valued, cared for and respected. Corey has been in education for 23 years, and these five years are the first where he has not taught students. Having said that, his guiding principle is that his staff are 'his class', and he aims to challenge and support them to help them achieve their best, as he would his students.   In this episode, we cover: What a ‘Well-Led' school is 9 research-backed guiding principles that will help lead schools with wellbeing in mind   Links and Resources: Blog article: The 9 Guiding Principles of Well-Led Schools Register for the free live training on February 16th Anonymous Staff Wellbeing Surveys  View Corey's work with the theme “Purpose” for 2023 Coreys work with his Executive Team's Leadership statement via LinkedIn Connect with Corey on Linkedin   Thank you so much for listening. Welcome to another episode! Today's question comes from a listener who wrote to me, and I have a friend and fellow T1D mom, Annie, to join the discussion and offer her perspective on this difficult situation. Join us!Show Highlights:Question from “Feeling Powerless”: “I need help in supporting my T1D daughter, who is in 3rd grade and was diagnosed almost a year ago. Her best friend since forever has begun to reject her around her diabetes. Most recently, she said that she doesn't want to come to the anniversary celebration of her diagnosis, but the problem extends to not wanting to be around her at school or our house. I am friends with the girl's mother, but I don't know how to talk to her about it. My daughter is so sad, and I don't know how to help, even though I've tried telling her to focus on other friends who are willing to help out.”JoAnne's Answer (with input from Annie): “Friendship shifts are not uncommon for 3rd graders, but this is a hard thing. Kids often feel uncomfortable around their friends getting all the attention, and we see this often at school or with siblings at home. It's also possible that this friend is afraid of needles and the responsibility of walking her friend to the school nurse because it feels scary. Since we don't know the child's reasons, we are focusing on how this mom can support her T1D daughter, and whether there is room to have a conversation with the friend's mom. “Powerless” can validate that it feels bad for her daughter and speculate that this is a rough patch that may change for the better with the friendship over time. The friendship doesn't have to be over because this girl is struggling with diabetes right now. Since there is a relationship with the girl's mom, I think “Powerless” should go to the mom and discuss the problem with curiosity around how she might be feeling. It might be helpful for the moms to have the discussion first, and it's important for the moms not to catastrophize the situation for the girls. These are eight- or nine-year-old girls, and there can be all kinds of ups and downs in friendships. I think the validation piece is about how diabetes is causing the shift in the friendship, which is painful, but there are other allies who can be supportive and helpful. As far as the Dia-versary celebration (See Resources for a blog post on the topic), there isn't a right or wrong way to do it, but this may be another situation in which the friend may not be comfortable with all the attention around diabetes. It might be better to keep those celebrations within the family and not invite others to participate. It is not a birthday party, and sometimes it's harder for people outside the family to understand the context of the celebration. It might be an easier pill to swallow for this friend for the special-ness of the occasion to be kept for the family members. This is an opportunity for “Powerless” to teach her daughter to state her needs in a situation that seems almost adversarial. It would be great for her daughter to acknowledge to her friend that diabetes is hard, but she still wants her to be a friend. That's a big ask for a 3rd grader, I know. It's important to realize that sometimes friends are good at showing up in some ways but not so much in others. Parents have to exercise caution about getting caught up in the kids' drama. It's always better to hold it lightly.”Resources:Blog post mentioned in this episode about Celebrating Dia-versaries: https://www.diabetessweettalk.com/blog/pe968a6ocp7vomgcos4rw2i0jdif8z Visit my website for available resources and upcoming courses/webinars:

Magick - mastery - Momentum Welcome to our Monday Moment of Magick.... We've just had the Full Moon in Leo reminding us of the importance, and courage that it takes, to be loyal to yourself. To prioritise and express your own needs, especially when so many other things demand your attention too. Putting yourself first can often be seen as selfish, but what if you looked at as filling yourself up, so instead of selfish, it because self-full. Imagine how much more you could enjoy, participate, contribute and support your own life, and those around you, if you came from a place of full-ness, rather than depletion. Today we use the MMM's to give yourself a moment to check-in with yourself and explore where you can reprioritise yourself and your needs. A culture of wellbeing starts at the top.  It's impossible to resolve staff wellbeing woes if the leaders in a school are experiencing chronic and unmanaged stress or burnout. The state of leader wellbeing can go on to impact the wellbeing and performance of both staff and students. So, when wanting to create a culture that prioritises wellbeing, it's important that leaders take a self-reflective look at how well-managed their own wellbeing is.  Building self-awareness around our stressors and triggers and implementing strategies that allow us to cope, helps us become better at problem solving, builds resilience, promotes job satisfaction, boosts emotional intelligence and ultimately makes us better leaders.  School leaders with a strong sense of wellbeing then go on to lead with energy, enthusiasm and compassion and, in turn, they're able to build stronger relationships with staff, address problems objectively, and have more capacity to consider the needs of others. Further, leaders who value their own wellbeing have the power to act as role models for staff and the school community as a whole. It's easier to pass on values of wellbeing when we, as leaders, adopt them as our own.     In this episode, we cover: - Why leader wellbeing matters and the impact it has on the school community - A definition of wellbeing from a multidimensional perspective - Common leadership stressors - The importance of developing effective coping strategies - Practical steps leaders can take to begin to address and improve their wellbeing   Links and Resources: Blog article: The 8 Dimensions of Wellbeing and Why All of Them Count Toward Your Success in Life and Work Blog article: The PERMAH Model For Workplace Wellbeing  Resource: Leader Reflection Tool Thank you so much for listening. Imagine identifying your parent for a crime, knowing that what you disclose will send your only parent to prison. Imagine moving 11x by the time you were in the 5th grade. And imagine being the child of a parent who, for most of your childhood, was struggling with undiagnosed bipolar disorder. Kyira was no stranger to chaos and uneasiness. She was the only child of a parent who turned to substances to cope with her mental health challenges and, in many ways, was the adult in the relationship. Perhaps to compensate for her shortcomings, her mother had no boundaries in her parenting, and Kyira pretty much dictated many decisions that had to be made; from which bedroom she got to have in a new place to if a man would get a second date with her mom, the buck stopped with Kyira. What you may think would lead to entitlement instead laid the foundation for Kyira to be a high-performing, academically thriving student who would develop an eating disorder for eight years. There are many twists and turns in Kyira's story. And what's most fascinating about Kyira's story is how she managed to go from being collateral damage to rising from the ashes of the adversity she experienced in her life. Demystifying Mental Toughness
129 How to Deal with Self-Criticism using Self Compassion – Part 1

Demystifying Mental Toughness

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 5, 2022 13:00

This is a short solo episode and the first of 3 episodes where I share 2 reminders of what Mental Toughness is and apply it to different domains.  The first clip is from Mental Toughness pioneer, Doug Strycharczyk which was recorded in our very first episode and the second clip comes from Sebastian De Chavez an elite professional rugby player for Newcastle Falcons who appeared in episode 104.   I then go on to share a case study and one helpful exercise taken from compassionate focused therapy to help people who experience self-criticism and are very hard on themselves off the back of failing or making mistakes in sport or life. Key Learning Points Doug states that Mental Toughness is about “how we respond mentally to things that happen to us.”  Seb confirms this in a professional rugby setting and considers mental toughness as “being able to get your job done, when things aren't going your way.” In sport when someone makes a mistake, often as an onlooker or spectator we are better placed to say “they're only human” and display compassion. Yet, when we are the culprit making the mistake, we often find displaying self-compassion very tough.  For many it is virtually impossible, especially in sport when you and your performances are being judged or at least you think they are.  And your emotions are so up and down because you are striving for competence. A common thing people get wrong when thinking of being self-compassionate or being kind to yourself is that it equals self-pity or that you are being “soft”.   Self-compassion doesn't mean that you are lacking in motivation either. Understanding the pain that you are put yourself through by being self-critical is vital and by trying to feel compassionate you can empower yourself to make better decisions. Encouraging, loving and supportive language is a much more powerful motivator than negativity and fear which is often a habit a lot of people can slip into, especially in a sporting environment. Do you ever feel overwhelmed and even stuck by situations that feel complex, uncertain and ambiguous? I certainly do. My guest today, Jay Cone, tells us that there's a surprising power in not knowing what to do. He believes that if we can boost our immunity to feeling the chaos, we can respond with creativity and compassion rather than paralysis and tribalism.  Does expanding your repertoire and freeing your mind sound useful? Then join us as we talk about bias, quicksand questions, and four disciplines for getting unstuck. “If we were able to have a more productive approach to uncertainty and ambiguity, we actually might find responses that make things better. But we want the easy answer. And it's our fascination with the easy answer, actually, that prolongs the chaos.” - Jay G. Cone Overcoming thinking traps We often find ourselves stuck - both individually and collectively - as we're faced with chaos, uncertainty, and unpredictability. Easy answers can be very attractive, regardless of their long term viability. When we fall into these thinking traps, we may oversimplify the problem to create a simple solution. This need for closure creates hasty actions that can actually sink us further into the problem, like being stuck in quicksand. Today, Jay outlines tips for avoiding thinking traps and nurturing an “unstuck” mind that's open to new possibilities. Much of it begins with knowing the right questions to ask to open new ways forward. Being able to adaptively respond to uncertainty is helpful, because expertise and learning from the past doesn't necessarily provide a fail-proof roadmap for the future. The importance of building mental stamina [08:28] “[In chaos] the only responses that we have are based in the limbic system in the amygdala, and we want to fight or we want to flee. But if we can develop our stamina for thinking, when things are complicated or uncertain or ambiguous, then we're not as susceptible to the same ideas and…closed mindedness and tribalism, that tends to paralyze us.” [19:09] “And when you start focusing on simplistic answers, then you tend to hang out with people who have gravitated towards those same simplistic responses. And it gets to the point where it's just too difficult to be open to new information, different perspectives, or to continue processing things.” How to know you're stuck [10:21] “One very common experience … you're really not clear on why it is that you can't achieve this goal. You make up all these reasons for why this attempt failed… So if a pattern emerges, there's a good chance that there's something more to be uncovered.” [14:46] “If someone expressed a point of view…and all of a sudden [you] have horrible judgments…if that's a feeling you're having, and it's one you're not particularly proud of or that doesn't make sense to you, that might be a leading indicator of stuckness as well.” Identify quicksand questions [23:05] “One of the things that you can look at is the way people pose questions ... the way people frame a question about a situation they want to change reveals a lot about how they're thinking and feeling.” [26:16] “All these things that we want other people to do, we just frame a question around them and we work toward altering the behavior - rather than trying to understand whether we as leaders, organizations, are complicit and whether there's something other than their behavior that needs to change.” Get in touch with Jay Cone: https://bit.ly/35ZVSZE Useful links to "The Surprising Power of Not Knowing What to Do" https://unstuckminds.com/the-surprising-power-of-not-knowing-what-to-do/ Support local bookstores by ordering on bookshop.org https://bookshop.org/a/16835/9781735927404 (As a bookshop affiliate, I may benefit if you purchase from this site) Resources: Blog: https://bit.ly/2NivMuo Free Assessment: https://bit.ly/2LWZRzg https://unstuckminds.com/ Blindspots (book) Hidden Biases of Good People: https://amzn.to/3642S7T Rise Leaders newsletter for more resources:  https://mailchi.mp/426e78bc9538/subscribe To discuss executive coaching, leadership development program design, and workshop facilitation, please visit: https://rise-leaders.com/contact-info/

While most of us worked in proximity, in highly relational cultures, the pandemic truly only accelerated the expectations of flexibility that were already in motion. As our means and tools for accomplishing tasks and meeting goals were changing, so too was the definition of “the workplace”. However, one thing's for sure, in 2020 we were all forced to accelerate and adapt quickly. We were forced to forge new ways, developing new systems and strategies, but we have also been forced to manage some very real tensions: expectations, accountability, communication, protecting culture and healthy team dynamics.    In this week's episode, Jenni continues the conversation about creating clarity and consistency within hybrid cultures in an interview with Kelly Skiles, XP at Soul City Church in Chicago. Kelly spends the majority of her time developing leaders, building team culture and focusing on strategy. She has worked both in ministry and in the non profit space for nearly 20 years where she has enjoyed coaching and leading dozens of teams through strategic processes to help them reach clarity and achieve their goals. She has been married to her husband Mark for 18 years and has 3 kids and loves spending her free time cheering on the Chicago Bulls. In the past, proximity helped to create accountability, but now that we've moved to cultures of flexibility, necessary feedback has naturally become less frequent. With less interaction we are then required to be more mindful and intentional about the various communication styles of those on our teams. As a leader, there is no one-size fits all approach. However, as leaders we must ask ourselves the important question - How do I need to adjust or shift in order to help create a culture that people want to be a part of and that they can contribute and do their best work? For a next step, we encourage you to connect with one of our trained and experienced 4Sight Group: Leadership Coaches. In today's discussion, performance mindset coach, Sean Hansen, shares a deep realization that he had about how people seek to grit or muscle their way through discomfort.Recently, another wild fire broke out near Sean's home, which prompted a reactionary flare-up of frustration and exasperation.  "Haven't we had enough destruction already this year!!" and "We're not even in fire season!  There's still snow on the ground, how could we be having yet another wild fire so early in the year?!"This caused Sean to reflect on a conversation that he had with a client about Sean's cold shower routine.  This routine has allowed Sean a daily practice of accepting discomfort, not as an exercise in 'slaying the dragon,' but as a means of practicing awareness and acceptance of what is.Are you an executive, entrepreneur, or combat veteran looking to overcome subconscious blind spots and limiting messaging to unlock your highest performance?  Feel free to reach out to Sean at Reload Coaching and Consulting.Resources:Blog post on cold therapy benefitsLoving What Is, by Byron Katie
