Business Marriage is the non-celebrity couple podcast that brings you the real and honest conversations that couples all over the world are having about life, family, work and everything in between. Entrepreneur husband and wife James and Hayley Burtt run their own separate businesses, so each week the pair take the opportunity to sit down and openly (sometimes too openly!) share what it is really like to juggle running a company, raising a family and (trying) to find time to keep your partner happy too! Expect arguments, laughs and even some useful lessons, plus listeners get to join in this interactive show by contributing their ‘partner battles’, late-night love letters and even get to give date-night suggestions!

In this week's episode, James and Hayley discuss the importance of focusing on personal branding in business as they share lived experience of its potential to establish credibility, trust, and loyalty with customers. There's also a fair bit of chat about the couple's new favourite subject, Manifestation and the never-ending search for work-life balance is put under the microscope once again. This week's Small Business Shoutout goes to the incredible Lewis Foundation, their unique spin on how they are growing the impact of their charity work by the way. And, as always, James gets on a rant with this week's “Who's A Mug” feature as he vents his frustrations with recent design changes in bottles and lids!
In today's episode, we're diving into all the things we find ourselves doing as parents. From pretending to enjoy Sports Day (seriously, whose idea was it to have sack races?), to spending our hard-earned cash on the latest “must-have” toy (it's already broken), and of course, finishing the food our kids don't – because who doesn't love cold, half-eaten fish fingers? We share the struggle of our sons having important events scheduled on the same day, being strong-armed into park trips on Fridays, and the soul-crushing sound of the Ice Cream van's jingle. And then there's the obligatory visit to the gift shop at museums and theme parks, where you're forced to spend a small fortune on overpriced tat. It's like they've weaponised keychains and rubber dinosaurs against us!
In this week's episode, Hayley attempts to reveal the top-secret tricks of the trade when it comes to selling! Sell what, you ask? Whether it's products, services, or even your soul to the caffeine gods, Hayley's got you covered. From branding and marketing, how you present yourself can only work in your favour—unless you're presenting yourself in pyjamas, but that's a different podcast. Also on the pod, we recount our escapades at Louis' school fete, where Hayley was the undisputed queen of the Coconut Shy and got her hands on some very hairy nuts (cheeky!). Meanwhile, Louis continues his love affair with Eurovision 2024 and the Swedish act Marcus & Martinus, who, plot twist, are actually from Norway (scandalous!). And if that wasn't enough, we wrap things up with a bizarre game where we morph into sales reps. Spoiler alert: Hayley hilariously tries and fails to sell James a pair of bread gloves! Yes, you read that right—bread gloves. Because who doesn't want to combine carbs and fashion? Remember to like, subscribe, follow, and smash all the buttons to stay in the loop! Don't worry, no hairy nuts will be harmed in the process!
Buckle up, folks! Today we're jumping into our time machine (sadly, not a real one) to relive the greatest hits from Season 1 of Business Marriage! Now, we know many of you are thinking, "Wait, there was a Season 1?" Yes, there was, and we're here to save you the hassle of binge-watching it all. Instead, we're serving up a highlight reel of our finest moments! We've got everything from planning the ultimate day, setting up Tinder profiles for each other (yep, you read that right), battling it out in the Success Factor showdown, and seeing if ChatGPT can really save our marriage. Spoiler: It got weird.
Today we're talking about motivation, inspiration, and just generally the power to actually get things done. Whether it's cash flow or weight loss, stuff needs doing, and if you can't finish it, why bother starting? We discuss our experiences with managing family life, setting boundaries, and prioritising self-care, and also dig into our fascination with Mediaeval Britain. We get into the challenges of scaling entrepreneurial ventures while maintaining a personal touch, emphasise the importance of continuous improvement and learning to remain successful, and offer insights on how to balance personal and financial goals.
Today, we're diving into the murky waters of the English language to uncover the words that make us all squirm, shudder, and seriously reconsider our love for communication. Buckle up, because we've done some research to discover the words that our friends, family, and the world at large (including you, our lovely listeners) hate with a passion. You know the ones – from "Congealed" to "Moist" to "FemFresh" (don't ask, or actually, do ask, but be prepared for the answer). We have a rant about why these words make our skin crawl, both the ones which feel unnecessary and the ones that just feel downright nasty. So grab your noise-cancelling headphones and a stress ball, because this episode is going to be a rollercoaster of repulsion!
In this episode, Hayley attended a thrilling (or so she claims) business event and is now declaring herself the queen of selling! To top it off, she bagged some fabulous Collagen freebies. Meanwhile, our 7-year-old rock star took the stage at a rock concert, delivering some uniquely creative renditions of popular songs (or so he claims). We also dive into James' preparations for the upcoming live show of Business Broadcast with James Sinclair, with Hayley offering her usual "encouraging" words of wisdom. This week on Business Marriage we are entering the metaphorical time machine as we go back in time to Hayley's first-ever podcasting efforts with her own show which was called The Family Unfiltered Podcast. In the inaugural episode of that show titled, Making Babies with The Burtts they delved into the journey of creating our two small little humans (don't worry, not the graphic details!), the peer pressure of having kids once you hit 30, ovulation sticks, pregnancy tests and the grand or should we say non-grand unveiling of pregnancy, the early and scary days of new parent life and also reflect on our life back then, the pressures we faced and the adaptations we made as a family …the biggest which actually led to the birth of Family Unfiltered which was the catalyst to Hayley starting her business, that you might have heard her share a fair few times! Louis (our 7-year-old) has been bringing back homework which we don't know the answers to. Not only is this embarrassing for us, it also means we can't help our child's education! So we thought we'd bump up our IQs by taking an AI generated quiz for 10-year-olds. We tackle english, maths, history, geography, science, and sex education in an endeavour to prove we're not as dumb as we were 30 years ago! (Oh god, has it been 30 years?) We also talk about some of the shenanigans we got up to at school, smoking, and (of course) swear words. Tune in to find out if we really are smarter than a 10-year-old. IQ? More like Ignorant Quiziots! Let us know if you are smarter than a 10-year-old, and don't forget to like, subscribe, and ring the bell for more insights on making your business partnership thrive just like a well-tuned marriage!
Today on the show we reveal our glamorous journey into the world of VIPs! OK, it was at our friend's dinosaur theme park opening, but that doesn't stop us being important! Hayley discussed her adventure with a fit, young… personal trainer, and we muse on the benefits of personal development and taking care of yourself (physically and mentally). We go over the ups and downs of podcasting (including this one), what makes excellent customer service so important, and the “personal touches” you can include to go that extra mile! Most importantly, we discuss the event we were invited to as VIPs. Though deep down we've always known we were VIPs… Very Immature Podcasters!
This podcast is written in the stars as James and Hayley discuss all things Zodiac! Meanwhile, Hayley, a Leo, sees herself as confident and comfortable being the centre of attention, though she doesn't see herself at the centre of everything! They delve into topics such as Chakras, the essence of Zodiacs, and the phases of the Moon. This episode is brimming with all the information you need to know about your star sign, its traits, and potential romantic alignments! Well well, what do we have here?! First we find out James went and fired Hayley, even though she's his wife and co-host. And then, to really rub salt in the wound, he hires some fancy new designer to replace her immediately! The mug of the week was awarded to poor Mark, who had quite the embarrassing car trouble story to share. Turns out all he needed to do was push the clutch, but it took him weeks of tinkering to figure out! The small business shout out was for T-Rex Table (https://www.trextball.com), a baseball coaching service for kids run by a former Team GB coach. The boys have been having a ball at the sessions each week learning new skills in a fun, inclusive environment. James recounted a chaotic weekend watching the kids, from multiple breakfasts to milkshake mishaps. Haley laughed at his parenting struggles after a relaxing spa trip. We discuss the key considerations for couples working together: clear communication, respecting each other's expertise, and establishing boundaries. We talk about communicating roles, expectations, and resolving conflicts constructively whilst using individual interests and social activities outside of work to prevent burnout. While our enthusiasm for our businesses brings us together, balancing work responsibilities and personal time is important. With mutual understanding and support of each other's passions, our relationship can thrive alongside successful collaboration. This episode saw us diving deep into all things manifestation. As we explored concepts like shifting mindsets, envisioning desires, and taking inspired action, even the universe got in on the discussion by pinging one of us out of the blue about something we'd been chatting about earlier. Beyond sharing personal anecdotes, we aimed to provide insightful analysis by examining manifestation from scientific and practical perspectives. We investigated topics such as the neurological basis for manifestation and real examples of synchronicity. Today on Business Marriage, James makes Hayley talk about what happens when you reach for greatness, and fall back down to Earth with a bit of a bump! In what is probably the quietest episode of Business Marriage we'll ever do, we discuss the times we've reached for the stars and fallen just a bit short. From wastes of time to literal waste, we've had our fair share of ups and downs, and hopefully sharing ours will help you feel better about yours! Today on Business Marriage, we've been inspired by Rob Dyrdek and decided to build the dream in our lives! After our chat with Rob last week, we had a few hard conversations with a mirror to figure out what we actually want from life. It turns out, it's really easy to figure out what you don't want in life, but figuring out what DO want is quite a bit harder. From our dream house to our dream experiences, it's a lot easier to daydream than to achieve those dreams - but we won't let that stop us! We share our goals, aspirations, and lamentations in our lives, and hopefully we'll actually stick to our targets for a change! Today on Business Marriage, James takes Hayley completely by surprise by inviting his hero, Rob Dyrdek, onto the podcast! In possibly our most emotional episode to date, Rob opens up about his desire to build an amazing life for himself rather than hitting specific targets. We talk about the value of gathering data and the sheer enormity of trying to be a better person. Hayley is a bit confused by the whole process, but James and Rob do their best to convince her of the benefits of tracking your life. We discuss quality of life, crunch some numbers, and do just a little bit of fanboying. As well as business, the duo also tackle the subject of how to tactically take steps towards beneficial outcomes when making key life decisions too. Either way, join us for an introspective journey into what we think of ourselves and the improvements we could have made. In this episode of Business Marriage we lament on how everything changes - in business, in marriage, and in life, and how we find it an absolute nightmare. We always think about how easy things will be when we achieve our dreams… but all these changes keep getting in the way! We go over how things are changing in our lives and businesses, how disruptive these changes are, but also the opportunities they can create. We go over the support of our wonderful friends and family, and how we would react if we were recognised on the street. We also go over the changes we want to see in each other by bringing back a segment from a previous episode… During a recent family trip, we found the most delightful fish & chip shop in Bexhill, Marino's Fish Restaurant! In this episode of Business Marriage, we bring in a brand new co-host… an Artificial Intelligence-based voice that is going to use its robot super-computer brain to save our marriage! We have been sick and tired of the amount of people banging on about the power of AI tech, especially ChatGPT in the last few months… it feels like every person and their dog is now an artificial intelligence expert, so this week on the pod we decided to test out how machine-learning can answer some tricky question around life, business, child-rearing and sex. And the results were a mixture of insightful, scarily accurate and just plain hilarious. In this episode of Business Marriage we discuss the power of taking action and aligning yourself with your goals. We have a bit of a contrast in our marriage at the moment, Hayley has made great improvements through her actions recently, but James feels shackled - and not in a good way. To try and pick him up, Hayley tests James on her ACTION acronym, and James does about as well as you would expect. In our endless struggle to talk about ourselves and our actions, we almost forget that listening is an action, but thankfully we've got vows for that. We also schedule our personal lives live on air, cover a few raunchy subjects, and call out both our friends and enemies alike! In this episode of Business Marriage we reflect on the importance of switching off and relaxing. Having just got back from a lovely relaxing family holiday, we really need a break. We reflect on our work-life balance, or the “life blend” we have created for ourselves (hopefully that term catches on!), and how we enjoy working hard but need to recognise when to switch off. James worries about how he looks on camera whilst Hayley uses the time for some personal shoutouts! We also get our first call-in about some particularly muggy behaviour and reveal the Tinder profiles we've written for each other... In this episode of Business Marriage we talk about finding your passion, in business as well as in love. We reminisce about when we first met working as entertainers abroad and the interesting implications this has about the foundation of our relationship. We get wistful about dating in the pre-social media era, and show our age as we become baffled by the modern dating scene. We also discuss the dangers of turning your passion into your livelihood and, off the back of our marriage audit, what to do when the passion has died.
