Extreme Heat: More Dangerous Than We Think?Extreme heat, one of the adverse consequences of climate change, exacerbates drought, damages agriculture, and profoundly impacts human health. Heat is the top weather-related killer in the United States, contributing to deaths that arise from heart attacks, strokes, and other cardiovascular diseases. As temperatures are projected to increase, so will the risk of heat-related deaths. Urban heat islands, cities with large numbers of buildings, roads, and other infrastructure, are ‘islands' of hot temperatures due to the reduced natural landscape, heat-generating human-made activities, and large-scale urban configuration. More than 40 million people live in urban heat islands in the United States, with this number only increasing as people continue to move from rural to urban areas. Around 56% of the world's total population lives in cities. Those living in large cities are more vulnerable to the effects of extreme heat, with research showing an increased mortality risk of 45% compared to rural areas. The risk of heat-related exhaustion and death is a major public health concern that is exacerbated by the climate crisis. The National Weather Service is in the process of creating a new interface known as HeatRisk, which uses a five-point scale to monitor the heat-related risk for vulnerable populations based on local weather data and health indicators. By mapping heat risk, climate scientists hope that individuals will now have a better understanding of the safety concerns associated with being outside during times of extreme heat. Understanding Heat Index DynamicsBefore stepping outside, most individuals check the daily weather prediction to get a sense of the average temperature. In order to measure the perceived temperature, climate scientists use a heat index, a calculation that combines air temperature and relative humidity to create a human-perceived equivalent temperature. Accurate prediction of the heat index is imperative as every passing year marks the warmest on record, with dangerous extreme heat predicted to become commonplace across arid regions of the world. Therefore, tracking such calculations is necessary in assessing future climate risk. Areas especially vulnerable to extreme heat heavily rely on an accurate prediction of temperature to determine if it is safe to go outside. However, there are over 300 heat indexes used worldwide to calculate the threat from heat, defeating the potential universality of this metric. Each heat index weighs factors differently, making it difficult to differentiate between various metrics. Dozens of factors are used to estimate the daily temperature based on predictions of vapor pressure, height, clothing, or sunshine levels. In addition, most heat indexes report the temperature assuming that you are a young, healthy adult and are resting in the shade, not in the sun. If outdoors, the heat index could be 15 degrees higher. If you are older, you may not be as resilient during intense temperatures. As a result, many climate scientists are calling for heat indexes that reveal the apparent risk of being outdoors on any given day. The elderly, children and infants, and those suffering from chronic diseases are more vulnerable to high temperatures than healthy, young adults, which needs to be accounted for when surveying temperature risk. Advanced Heat Assessment Tools: HeatRisk and WBGTThe National Weather Service's HeatRisk index is different from previous models as it identifies unusual heat times and places, also taking into account unusually warm nights. As such, it provides a more universal measure accounting for the degree to which people in the area are acclimated to various heat temperatures. The HeatRisk index can thus be used to gauge levels of danger associated with temperature, potentially altering an individual's behavioral patterns. For those working in outdoor fields, the WetBulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) measure can be particularly useful as a way to measure heat stress as it takes into account temperature, humidity, wind speed, sun angle, and cloud coverage. Different from the heat index, the WBGT includes both temperature and humidity and is calculated for areas in the shade. If not exercising or working outdoors, people can revert to the HeatRisk scale to calculate the potential hazards of being outside for longer periods. Heat Indexes are Harder to Calculate Than They AppearBecause scientists have to account for a variety of factors like geography, physics, and physiology, establishing a truly universal heat index is unlikely. For regions like Colorado, creating the criteria for a heat advisory has proven shockingly difficult. Heat indexes typically rely on temperature and humidity, however, the Colorado landscape is so dry that an advisory is very rarely triggered, even during heat waves. In such scenarios, the HeatRisk index provides a better gauge for outdoor safety. Most people underestimate the dangers of extreme heat and often ignore warning messages from local authorities. Educational programs are vital in informing the public on the dangers of extreme heat.Who is David Romps?David Romps, UC Berkeley professor of Earth and Planetary Science, is at the forefront of heat index research. Romps has found that those exposed to extreme heat suffer restricted blood flow and are often unable to physiologically compensate. Through his research, Romps believes that heat index calculations often underestimate the potential heat impacts on individuals, with the human body being more susceptible to heightened temperatures than commonly understood. Can't knock the hustle like an NFL 23 Week 18 and Monday Night Football episode of #ckth2things with the one and only, West Philly Hippie. Aka: Two things. Two questions. And one prediction. Amongst others, today's topics include: Question 1: Which organization and fan base had the roughest emotional letdown this weekend — the Cowboys or the Eagles? With expectations being high as ever in Dallas, we both agree that “them Boys” represent the biggest playoff letdown — by a slim margin over #thebirds. On that note, special shout out to longtime friend of the program and dedicated Cowboys fan, Thomas Moore. Question 2: Now that the Eagles have been bounced out of “the dance,” who do we want to see run the table? With all due respect to Josh Allen and the streaking Bills, we both are now looking to see Lamar Jackson and the Ravens put a Championship stamp on what has been a magical season for them so far. Finally, as always, Andre makes his predictions for the upcoming NFL Divisional Playoffs this upcoming weekend. As always, big ups and much respect to Andre for bringing the energy and sharing the knowledge. Tap into the @westphillyhippie and @thegoodoledayssports podcast for more expert analysis. Cheers and enjoy.

SERIES 2 EPISODE 106: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: The obvious headline from Iowa last night: Trump romped, around 50%, with the reminder that if it were Biden only getting 50% in the first primary the Democrats would be considered dead in the water. The real headline from Iowa: Trump mused, in that skillfully ambitious way of his, about being in charge for "four years and beyond" and he can deny he meant refusing to leave office in 2029 but of course all he's TALKED about since 2017 was how he deserved more than two terms or more than eight years or more than the constitution allows. And the NEXT headline out of Iowa is the missing ingredient in the implausibly tight race between a psychotic dictator with dementia and a gifted dedicated president: the report that internal Biden research and polling says three out of four undecided voters really DON'T believe Trump will be the nominee and will have an "oh shit" moment. Plus: Marjorie Barney Rubble Greene thinks President Biden can communicate with the dead by phone. B-Block (26:08) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: Rep. Barry "Your Tour Guide" Loudermilk makes a huge mistake. He wants to investigate Cassidy Hutchinson. And the Baltimore Sun is sold to a fascist and a one-time columnist who took a quarter of million in bribes from the Bush Administration. (30:50) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: When the NFL playoff game in Buffalo was postponed by snow, the Outkick The Coverage idiot whined that they didn't postpone D-Day because of bad weather - except of course they did. Plus Billo is back in the list. And Laura Loomer underscores the fundamental stupidity of the right. They don't believe in man-made climate change but they DO believe that Biden has a machine to manipulate the weather. C-Block (37:05) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: A silly story about ESPN fudging nomination lists for the Emmy Awards (Erin Andrews became "Erik Andrews," etc., to allow ineligible talent to get trophies) ignores the real problem: the hosts of Emmy winning shows were ineligible to GET Emmys because the producers who ran the Emmys thought the talent had enough good stuff as it was. It flashed me back to a memorable conversation with Gil Stratton, an actor and sportscaster who insisted that every producer and executive he ever met was a bigger prima donna than an old colleague of his named Judy Garland.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Rafael Behr talks to Rob Hutton, parliamentary sketch writer at the Critic, about the uneasy relationship between Westminster lobby journalists and MPs.Often political journalists cultivate close relationships with politicians to find out what's really happening in the corridors of power. But does a journalist's 'insider status' cloud their judgement when working out how to write about political stories or policy ssues, or whether to cover them at all?Does it inevitably become a trade-off between, a steady stream of 'exclusives', and a fair and objective approach to reporting? If so, what does this mean for democracy?Rob Hutton is an author and freelance journalist. He spent 16 years covering the British government for Bloomberg, taking in five prime ministers, as many elections, and the odd referendum. Before that, he worked for the Mirror and the Financial Times. He now has a regular spot as sketchwriter for The Critic. His career has been a mix of seriousness and satire. While he was a reporter for Bloomberg, unquestionably The Global News Organisation Least Likely To Tell A Joke, he wrote Romps, Tots & Boffins, a satirical book about the words only journalists use. He followed that up with Would They Lie to You?, about the way politicians got around reality without actually uttering untruths (it was a more innocent age). According to Rob, his most recent book, Agent Jack, doesn't have quite so many laughs, although he says there's an incident with a jar of marmalade and a blueprint for a Vickers tank. 'Oh, and there's a naked German in a wardrobe.' Here's a link to his Podcast - A Pod Too FarRafael Behr's first book was released in May, 2023**'Politics, A Survivor's Guide,'** is all about the infuriating toxicity of politics, how it got that way and how to resist the slide into cynicism and pessimism that are so corrosive of democracy. It's about the challenge of staying engaged without getting enraged; the need to empathise with people whose views we cannot share and how that is different to appeasement of politics we believe to be dangerous.Available from Waterstones:https://www.waterstones.com/book/politics-a-survivors-guide/rafael-behr/9781838955045Or, for those who are interested in signed copies, from City Books in Hove:https://www.city-books.co.ukPolitics on the Couch has been chosen by Feedspot as both one of the Top 25 UK Psychology Podcasts and Political Science Podcasts on the web.https://blog.feedspot.com/uk_psychology_podcastshttps://blog.feedspot.com/political_science_podcasts Hosted on Acast. We start with a video showing auto-cunnilingus. Hard to believe it's real. Maybe it's not? A woman claims that she can't tell when her partner's penis is inside of her. She actually thinks he's not inside her when he is. Is this a size issue, and if so is he too small or is she too big? Or is it a completely normal state of affairs? We return to the ever-popular topic of MMF threesomes, and what it would take for a man to want to engage in one. Is it worth doing an MMF to get an MFF? And keep in mind the difference between MMF and MFM. Why has incest become such a trope in online porn? Do people actually want to watch that? Is there any way to get people to admit that it's their preference? And, how should someone prepare for five days of continuous sex? To follow along with the video discussed at the beginning of the episode: https://ymmv.me/49/auto-cunnilingus We get a lot of our questions from the Reddit, so for our listeners' enjoyment, here are links to some of the questions we discussed this week: https://ymmv.me/49/cant-feel https://ymmv.me/49/mmf https://ymmv.me/49/incest-porn https://ymmv.me/49/romp Twitter: @ymmvpod Facebook: ymmvpod Email: ymmvpod@gmail.com

P: Bonjour Fabian ! F: Bonjour Pablo ! Sud Radio, La Minute du Coach. P: Et si vous deveniez un pirate ? Voilà une jolie proposition Fabian. F: Oui. Tu m'as entendu ?
In the latest episode of The Passing Shot, Joel and Kim roundup all the action from Finals weekend at Roland Garros. From Nadal’s utterly remarkable performance against Djokovic to claim his 13th French Open title and equal Federer’s Slam tally to Iga Świątek's dominant and surprising run to the trophy, Joel and Kim discuss all the main talking points from the Finals. They also roundup the doubles, juniors and wheelchair events to complete what has been a fantastic fortnight of Grand Slam tennis.
After dropping Game 1 to Portland in the bubble Tuesday night, in one of the worst offensive performances of the season, the Lakers got off to a quick start Thursday in Game 2, eventually cruising to a 111-88 win over the Trail Blazers. Series tied, 1-1. Anthony Davis led the way, answering (for one night at least) a ton of questions about his readiness to be a playoff hero. Andy and Brian break down what was different about A.D. specifically, and the Lakers more generally. From there... Does it matter that LeBron is struggling to finish at the rim? Where can Frank Vogel turn for lineup changes if they're needed? And might the continuing offensive struggles of Danny Green - 5 of 18 from the floor after two games, extending some bad bubble mojo - be one of the things to force his hand?

If you've been listening to DYR for a while, then you know that we (and when I say we I mean u/dogboobes) can be pretty anxious people. It permeates our every day existence, and in our increasingly wtf times (r/PeakAmerica), anxiety is is about as omnipresent as hillary4prison on 4chan. Fortunately for you, there's a virtually troll-free subreddit, aptly named r/anxiety, where you can temporarily squash the perpetual fear that death is always on your heels and life itself is a Sysiphusian challenge that only fools think they can beat. Or, you know, maybe you're afraid your girlfriend is preginat and your friends think you're weird. Whatever anxiety is plaguing you, r/anxiety is a place to momentarily assuage those fears. Also, we invent the world's great new health snack craze live on the pod and we're pretty sure that Bill Gates has an ATV fetish. This episode brought to you by those stickers on plastic that you can't entirely scratch off, forever reminding you of your shortcomings with even the simplest things.
