NEPAT - Núcleo Brasileiro de Estudos de Nazismo e Holocausto
This episode is the recording of an exclusive interview conducted by us from NEPAT - The Brazilian Center for Nazism and Holocaust Studies with historian Johann Chapoutot in 2022. Chapoutot holds a degree in Political Science from the Institute of Political Studies in Paris, a Master's in History from the University of Paris IV, and a Ph.D. in History from the University of Paris I. He currently teaches Contemporary History at the Faculty of Arts at the University of Sorbonne, France. A curiosity about Chapoutot is that he has already spent some time in Brazil as a visiting professor at the University of Brasília! Chapoutot is a great reference for us at NEPAT, so we made the most of the opportunity to talk with him. We have prepared a very special interview for you! In the interview, you'll hear Chapoutot talk about the Nazis' attempt to rewrite the past and create a Nazified future, the insidious logic behind Nazi discourse, the impact that Nazi ideology left on the present, and much more! The first part of the episode is an explanation of the theme in Portuguese, and then, professor Chapoutot gives his presentation in English. This interview is also available on our Youtube channel. -
This episode is the recording of the opening conference of the international event “The burden of our times: the Third Reich in perspective”, held and organized by us from NEPAT - The Brazilian Center for Nazism and Holocaust Studies. The purpose of the event was to reflect on the repercussions and continuities of Nazism in current societies, investigate with particular attention the deep roots of ideology in Brazil, and think about the challenges and potential of researching and teaching topics related to Nazism and the Holocaust. All the conferences are available on our YouTube channel with automatic English subtitles. The interview was made with Professor Christopher Browning. Browning is one of the world's leading specialists in Nazi and Holocaust history. Presently, he is the Frank Porter Graham Professor Emeritus of History at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has conducted extensive research on perpetrator behaviors and motives, Nazi Jewish policy-making, the implementation of the “Final Solution,” survivor testimonies, and the history of ghettos and slave-labor camps. Browning will discuss his trajectory, the historian's work, understanding perpetrators, and much more. The first part of the episode is an explanation of the theme in Portuguese, and then, professor Browning gives his presentation in English. -

The conference is titled “Mind-reading Adolf Eichmann: Harry Muslich's Criminal Case 40/61 (1962)” and was given by Professor Erin McGlothlin (Washington University in St. Louis). Professor McGlothlin will examine the depiction of Holocaust perpetrators in works that feature the perpetrators' inner experience, deciphering their motivations and emotions, that is, reading their minds. Thus, perpetrators turn into morally complex and, above all, human subjects. Understanding them - far from exonerating their actions - is essential to understanding the Holocaust fully. By looking at such representations, McGlothlin will examine the cultural constructions of perpetrators, raising important historical and ethical questions. The first part of the episode is an explanation of the theme in Portuguese, and then, Professor McGlothlin gives her presentation in English. -
