According to the American Addiction Centers: "The rate of alcohol use among Native Americans is significantly higher than in other ethnic groups. The rate of Native Americans with an alcohol use disorder is higher than that of the total population. And one in ten young Native Americans (ages 18–25) has an alcohol use disorder.” What if there were a Native-owned, alcohol-free alternative that not only tasted amazing but was actually good for you? Could this help our Native communities — and others — who are struggling with substance abuse? And what about those who simply enjoy the taste of wine or beer, but are looking to make a healthier lifestyle change? Enter Jody Colbert — entrepreneur, founder and president of War Chief Collection, and proud descendant of the great Comanche warrior Quanah Parker. In this episode, you'll learn about Jody's line of non-alcoholic beverages, her personal journey to sobriety, and her deep connection to Quanah Parker. Provisional data indicates that there were approximately 107,000 drug overdose deaths last year, a 15% increase from the previous year and the highest number on record. Though overdose deaths from other substances, such as methamphetamine and cocaine also saw significant increases, fentanyl has been the primary driver of overdose deaths: last year, it was responsible for more than 88% of all opioid overdose deaths and more than 66% of total overdose deaths. On this special International Overdose Awareness Day edition of “Addiction Talk,” we'll hear from panelists who have had varying experiences with overdoses, and Dr. Mark Calarco will provide instruction on the use of the opioid overdose antidote, naloxone.Cammie Wolf Rice is an activist, speaker and author of the upcoming book, “The Flight: My Opioid Journey,” which details the loss of her 32-year-old son Christopher to an opioid overdose. The goal of the organization is to raise awareness about the potential dangers of prescription pain medication and alternative methods of pain management.Philip Van Guilder, also known as the “Narcan Man,” is the director of community affairs at Greenhouse Treatment Center in Grand Prairie, TX. How To Die Happy
Ep 21 Addiction and the Healing Power of Kundalini Yoga, with Chiara De Lucia

How To Die Happy

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 17, 2022 94:57

This week's guest is Kundalini alchemist and spiritual mentor Chiara De Lucia. Chiara talks in detail about Kundalini yoga and how yoga helped win her battle with cocaine addiction. Who knew that yoga was a viable treatment for addiction? Do we often overlook ancient healing therapies in favour of modern medicine? Addiction's not going away. According to America's National Center for Drug Abuse Statistics, 11.7% of Americans 12+ use illegal drugs. 53 million (19.4%) people 12+ have used illicit drugs or misused prescription drugs within the last year. The US Federal budget for drug control in 2020 was $35bn. Over in Europe, the UK spends £36 billion each year on drug and alcohol abuse treatment and is, according to the Centre for Social Justice, the "addiction capital of Europe." So, where does Kundalini yoga fit into addiction treatment? Speaking more generally, all forms of yoga have a transformative effect. In fact, American Addiction Centers confirm yoga to be beneficial when used in tandem with other traditional substance abuse treatment methods. Meanwhile, in a study carried out by The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, the results showed that practising yoga creates an increase in gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) produced by the brain. This helps manage anxiety and stress response. Regular and prolonged substance abuse results in physical changes to the brain, negatively altering neural pathways associated with emotional regulation, impulse control, pleasure, and decision making. Due to mass over-stimulation, addiction also affects homeostatic balance. In addition to physiological changes, any addict attempting to quit will experience psychological side effects, including fatigue, insomnia, emotional withdrawal, anxiety, stress, and depression. It's here that yoga assists by way of modulating stress response. Find out more about yoga therapy and addiction here. Masters and practitioners all over the planet acknowledge the existence of lifeforce energy which has many names, but the Hindus call it 'Kundalini' - divine feminine energy. As Chiara explains during the interview, Kundalini is one of many forms of yoga dealing with the movement of lifeforce energy around the body. In many of us, this powerful energy lies dormant within our root chakra (the lowest energy centre, located at the base of our spine). A resting snake lies coiled; hence 'Kundalini' literally means 'coiled' (like a snake). We all have this incredible power locked inside us, yet it remains blocked or inert for many. A series of practices are available to help unlock this sacred lifeforce energy. So how do we keep ourselves open? Our chakras are the gates—energy centres throughout our bodies. Each gate has the potential to cultivate or block the flow of our lifeforce energy. Learning how to keep our chakras clear, balanced, and open keeps this from happening. This way, our energy is in a constant flow state, providing a long list of transformational benefits. In 2017, a study investigated Kundalini as a therapy for age-related cognitive decline. After 12 weeks, those who practised Kundalini yoga "showed short & long-term improvements in executive functioning," plus positive improvements were seen in depressed mood and resilience. An additional 8-week study of the benefits of Kundalini yoga for PTSD sufferers showed that participants had significantly improved symptoms, including better sleep, less perceived stress, more positive mood, more resilience, and less anxiety than did the Control group. Connecting the Hope of the Gospel With the Heart of Addiction: theaddictionconnection.org 2021 article [1] analyzes these 2014 American statistics. Benzodiazepines; "z-drugs" (or sleep aids); anti-depressants; psycho-stimulants; and anti-psychotics are some of the drugs addressed in this analysis of the dangers of overdoses and death as compared to heroin. Death rates from overdoses rapidly increased as prescriptions for these drugs increased. What horrible side effect is a result of some anti-psychotics? What is the origin of suffering and corruption in our world? What is the latest on Fentanyl-related deaths and counterfeit pills? 2 Corinthians 3:1-6 says, "Are we beginning to commend ourselves again? Or do we need, as some do, letters of recommendation to you, or from you? 2 You yourselves are our letter of recommendation, written on our hearts, to be known and read by all. 3 And you show that you are a letter from Christ delivered by us, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts. 4 Such is the confidence that we have through Christ toward God. 5 Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God, 6 who has made us sufficient to be ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit. For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life..." ESV [2] "12 Since we have such a hope, we are very bold, 13 not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face so that the Israelites might not gaze at the outcome of what was being brought to an end. 14 But their minds were hardened. For to this day, when they read the old covenant, that same veil remains unlifted, because only through Christ is it taken away. 15 Yes, to this day whenever Moses is read a veil lies over their hearts. 16 But when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. 17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 18 And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit." ... Are you reaching out to the people in your area who are struggling with addictive lifestyles? According to the American Addiction Centers, in 2017 it is estimated that 19.7 million people (12 and older) battled substance abuse. This number merely encompasses the substance abuse cases reported and does not include unreported cases and addiction cases that involved actions. Living with an addiction is difficult in its own right but what about living with someone you care about who has an addiction? This too is equally tough and gains less attention, but not today. In this episode, we discuss both topics and give our opinion on a starting point for both, people battling an addiction and people living with a loved one who has an addiction. Join us in the conversation as we continue to try to help those battling their addiction(s) and give some guidance to those who simply want their loved ones to win the battle over their addiction.

We all meet people in our lives through businesses, groups, events, and other gatherings, and if you're like me you may never get that opportunity to connect again outside of those collectives.   Find the Good News has opened old doors and made seats at the table of conversation, and I feel lucky to have this resource to reconnect in a meaningful way. My guest in episode 113 —Scotty Higginbotham, the Business Development Outreach Coordinator for American Addiction Centers—is one of those people.   It had been almost a decade since I'd met Scotty and almost as long since we'd spoken. At first blush, his job title and professional affiliation indicated that he was the type of guest that listeners would appreciate. What I discovered in taking this conversational journey is that the path he has tread to his role with American Addiction Centers was not without his own addiction challenges and ongoing recovery practices.   What Scotty shares is honest and undiluted, a true portrait of what addiction looks like, how it affects human beings on the ground, those that love them, and the true face of those that meet our brothers and sisters, offering a hopeful hand in what is often their greatest moment of despair. He tells his story without pruning the details, leaving the thistles and thorns that sting. In my opinion, he must tell it this way so others, those he helps through his role, understand that he sees them because he has been them.   This visit is a reminder for me that there are people, like Scotty, who are on call and ready to help those in the stranglehold of addiction, no questions asked.   Now, take some time to really let your heart and mind consider the power addiction has over so many of those we all love, remembering that even in their darkest moments there are helpers in recovery that are reaching out, then press play on a little good news. ========== SUPPORT FIND THE GOOD NEWS — https://www.findthegood.news/donate/  ========== LEARN MORE ABOUT AMERICAN ADDICTION CENTERS — https://americanaddictioncenters.org/  ========== CONTACT SCOTTY HIGGINBOTHAM  — 337-352-1527 ========== FIND THE GOOD NEWS IS PRODUCED BY PARKER BRAND CREATIVE SERVICES >> www.ParkerBrandUp.com   ==========

How Dry January Affects Your Body After Just One Week

Bustle

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 13, 2021 4:53

After the hectic holidays and New Year, you might be planning to abstain from alcohol for Dry January — to reset for the year ahead, give your body a break, or simply save a little money. While you can expect various aspects of your health, including your gut composition and your immune system, to change after an entire month of sobriety, experts tell Bustle that just one week without alcohol may change your body in small ways. The extent of those changes, though, depends a lot on how much you were drinking before Dry January — and to see real change, you'll need to stay the course for the rest of the month. "Some people may find that a week of sobriety affects their body," Dr. George Koob, Ph.D, president of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, tells Bustle. Most studies on sobriety focus on the longer-term effects of going sober, from months to years, so there isn't a firm picture of what sobriety looks like after a single week from a research standpoint. "One week is a very short time period," Koob says. You shouldn't expect to feel completely different in your first week abstaining from alcohol. Some people may begin to experience some positive effects of sobriety in their first week. Koob tells Bustle that decreased stomach irritation, better sleep, and more exercise are common longer-term reactions to sobriety, and that some people may experience them more quickly than others. "Research shows that alcohol causes you to feel more sedated, but interferes with the quality of sleep, so a week of sobriety can restore standard sleep patterns and help you feel better rested," Dr. Joseph R. Volpicelli M.D. Ph.D., executive director at the Institute of Addiction Medicine, tells Bustle. Sleep quality can show a particularly marked improvement in just seven days. According to research published in Handbook of Clinical Neurology in 2014, drinking alcohol before bed can change sleep patterns significantly, decreasing REM sleep and increasing night wakefulness by shifting the electrical wavelengths in the brain. That's why you feel so tired even after sleeping for ages after a heavy night out. For most of us, going to bed sober can roll back these effects pretty rapidly and restore a more natural sleep pattern. Another area that may show change relatively quickly is the liver. "One study reports amelioration of elevated liver enzymes that are associated with drinking," Koob tells Bustle. These enzymes are signals that the liver is under oxidative stress as it tries to process alcohol, and when you're sober, they begin to reduce in number. However, how fast their levels plummet depends on how much you've been drinking over time, and whether you've damaged your liver in any way because of alcohol. For very heavy drinkers, a week of sobriety likely won't produce much change in liver enzyme levels; for lighter drinkers, it might show more results. Your brain may also recover with the quickness. "Eliminating alcohol for just one week can result in improved mental acuity — the ability to problem solve, make better decisions, learn, concentrate and even be creative," Dr. Lawrence Weinstein M.D., Chief Medical Officer at American Addiction Centers, tells Bustle. Your mood and relationships with others may pick up, too. "A week of sobriety can help improve mood, social relationships, and increased productivity," Dr. Volpicelli says. Heavier drinkers may also experience a more difficult side effect of Dry January in the first week of sobriety: the symptoms of alcohol withdrawal. If, in the first week or two of going sober, you experience shaking, headaches, nausea, increased anxiety, or insomnia, it's possibly a signal that you were ingesting too much alcohol and your body is now struggling to adjust to life without it. "If you drink a lot and you abruptly stop drinking, that can be dangerous," Koob tells Bustle. "If you’re a moderate to heavy drinker, you may want to consider professional help, rather than suddenly stopping drinking." To get the full benefits of sobriety in Dry January — including better energy, a healthier gut, and clear skin — one week isn't enough. Four weeks of sobriety is far more effective than just one, Koob tells Bustle. But if you feel at all different during that first week, then you might be on to something. "I think the most important thing is if you feel better in any shape or form, then that’s an opportunity to re-evaluate your relationship with alcohol," he says. If one week of sobriety leaves you feeling clearer, happier, and more well-rested, it's worth trying out the rest of the month and seeing what else might result. Although the vast majority produce way less than this, the number was increased from 2 million barrels in 2011 to reflect the growth of the industry. For reference, the Treehouse Brewing Company has the capacity to produce about 150,000 barrels per year at its current facility which opened in 2017, whereas the Boston Beer Company, makers of Sam Adams and one of the largest craft breweries in the US brewed about 5.3 million barrels in 2019. Additionally, an independent brewer is one in which less than 25 percent of the craft brewery is owned or controlled by a beverage alcohol industry member that is not itself a craft brewer. According to the American Addiction Centers and Alcohol.org, the use of alcohol has been normalized in almost every culture, but it should be noted that alcohol is a toxin, and regular use of the can lead to medical, mental health, and social problems...In the U.S., alcohol is the most commonly used substance of abuse among young people...Individuals ages 12-20 account for 11% of all the alcohol consumed, more than 90% of which is consumed by binge drinking. Current drinking culture can make it difficult for parents and young people to fully understand the severity and potential consequences of alcohol abuse. Teens may drink because of peer pressure, experimentation, stress, or other reasons...this risky behavior can lead to an alcohol use disorder (AUD) and heavy alcohol use in the teenage years can cause lasting cognitive deficits and alter the course of brain development as the brain continues to mature into a person’s early 20’s. Other dangers associated with underage drinking include impaired judgment, which can lead to violent behavior, and drinking and driving, increased risk of carrying out or suffering from physical or sexual assault, injuries, increased risk of later alcohol problems, and death. The CDC estimates that alcohol plays a role in the deaths of 4,358 individuals under age 21 each year on average. These IPAs have a high alcohol content over 7.5% and are typically described as having intense fruit flavors and aromas, a soft body, and smooth mouthfeel. They often have an opaque color with substantial haze and have less perceived bitterness than traditional IPAs but are always massively hop forward. This emphasis on late hopping, especially dry hopping, with hops with tropical fruit qualities lends the specific ‘juicy’ character for which this style is known. The New England IPA has undoubtedly been the hottest trend in craft over the past few years with many small and larger craft brewers trying their hand at some version of a hazy IPA-style beer. In 2018, its first year as a competition category at the Great American Beer Festival, the “Juicy or Hazy Double IPA” style garnered more entries than any other style category - dethroning the American IPA as most entered beer for the first time in 16 years. For more on the New England IPA phenomenon, see “How the Hazy New England IPA Conquered America” (Thrillist, 2018), the “New England IPA” style sheet from Craft Beer, “‘Juicy or Hazy’ Ales Debut in BA Beer Style Guide, Representing New England IPAs” (CraftBeer.com, 2018), “The New England Style IPA is The Anti-IPA” (CraftBeer.com, 2017), “What Are New England IPAs (NEIPAs)?” (Beer Cartel, 2018), and “What the Hell Happened to the West Coast IPA?” (Gear Patrol, 2019) 44:00 - Generally speaking, the west coast IPAs that pioneered the American style highlight the bitterness of hops over everything where east coast IPAs strike a balance between malty sweetness and hoppy bitterness. Whereas west coast IPAs are dryer and have an aggressive bitterness, an east coast IPA is sweeter on the front end, which fades into bitterness, thanks to the hops. As an offshoot of the east coast style, New England IPAs are distinctly juicy, as in they can sometimes taste like you took a bite into a tropical fruit or citrus with the rind still on. Previous holdouts, who due to the early dominance of the west coast style thought that “craft” and “bitter” were synonymous, as well as newbies to the craft beer scene, have typically found it somewhat easier to get in on the game through the New England IPAs more approachable flavors, which has increased overall interest in craft beer. - For more see “East Coast IPA vs West Coast IPA: What's the Difference?” (Gear Patrol, 2020)49:39 - See “How The Rise Of Craft Beer Is Contributing To The Decline Of The Homebrewing Lifestyle” (Forbes, 2016)49:43 - Counterweight Brewing Company49:45 - DuVig Brewing Company49:49 - In January 1985 there were 100 craft breweries open and operating in the US, including early craft pioneers like Sierra Nevada and the Boston Beer Company, by 1996 the number of craft breweries had grown to 1000, and 50 different categories were recognized and judged at the Great American Beer Festival. The first “American Craft Beer Week” took place in 2006, and in 2014 craft beer production volume saw an 18% increase over the previous year with IPA taking over the overall production lead for the first time. By 2016 there were over 5000 craft breweries operating in the US, by 2019 there were over 8,000. In 2019 craft breweries captured 13.6% of the overall US beer market with sales totaling over $29 billion dollars, up from just slightly over $10 billion in 2011, and Ken Grossman, who founded Sierra Nevada back in 1980, has a net worth of $1 billion dollars. - For more see “Beer History” (Craft Beer), “National Beer Sales & Production Data” (Brewers Association), “Retail dollar sales of craft beer in the United States from 2011 to 2019” (Statista), and the Forbes profile of Ken Grossman53:16 - See “2020 Zymurgy’s Best Beers in America Results” a list compiled by Zymurgy, which is the bi-monthly magazine of the American Homebrewers Association56:42 - See “The History of Beer” (Craft Beer & Brewing), “Who Invented Beer?” (History.com), and the “History of beer” Wikipedia entry57:00 - See “An ancient thirst for beer may have inspired agriculture, Stanford archaeologists say” (Stanford News, 2018), “The History Of Beer And Why Civilization As We Know It May Have Started Because Of It” (All That’s Interesting, 2016)58:49 - See the “Stout” Wikipedia entry and various style sheets from Craft Beer for American Stout, American Imperial Stout, Irish-Style Dry Stout, English-Style Oatmeal Stout, English-Style Sweet Stout (Milk Stout)This episode was recorded remotely via Zoom in December 2020The “Beautiful Illusions Theme” was performed by Darron Vigliotti (guitar) and Joseph Vigliotti (drums), and was written and recorded by Darron Vigliotti

How did Kamala Harris murder an American success story?  The final episode demonstrates how the forces attempting to destroy Jerrod Menz and his drug addiction treatment centers damaged his reputation and drove the company's stock price into the ground.  California Attorney General Kamala Harris, and her Deputy AG, Hardy Gold, filed second-degree murder charges in July of 2015 against Menz, four others, and his company. Months later, a California judge dismissed the murder charge against Menz. However, a San Francisco area hedge fund's strategy to short the stock drove the publically-traded company's share price from the mid-40s to the mid-teens. American Addiction Centers is still operating; however, the company filed for bankruptcy protection in June of 2020. This is how Kamala Harris murdered an American success story.

Charles "Rocky" Hill, a local competitor, had spent years trying to put Jerrod Menz and his drug addiction treatment companies out of business. After a client died soon after checking themselves into one of Menz's facilities in July of 2010, Hill developed a close relationship with California Deputy Attorney General Hardy Gold. Five years later, when a San Francisco area hedge fund started shorting the company's publically traded shares and publishing information critical of company practices, a trio waging war against Menz emerged. Attorney General Kamala Harris and her office charged Menz and others with second-degree murder over the client's death. Although Harris was unsuccessful in prosecuting the case, Menz and American Addiction Centers would suffer financially while Kingsford Capital made millions watching the company's stock plummet. The question remains, did anyone associated with the Attorney General's office profit from the fall of the company's stock?

On today’s show I chat with Joy Sutton, the Director of Corporate Communications at American Addiction Centers, a leading provider of both residential and outpatient addiction treatment services. I am thrilled to be able to use my Brave Girl platform to shed light on this critical topic and to provide vital resources and information to you through my conversation with Joy.  On the episode, Joy tells the story of her boss, addiction treatment trailblazer Michael Cartwright, who co-founded American Addiction Centers and she shares her best advice on how to get help for you or a loved one. We talk about the detox process and why it’s best to do it with assistance. We also talk about residential treatment programs and the path to long-term recovery and sobriety. One of the resources we discuss is Rehabs.com, a national directory and library of resources to help you find out what help is available. I encourage you to visit American Addiction Center’s website as well. It’s chock full of information, not just about their facilities and services but includes research and other resources as you do your research. Joy and I also talk about Michael’s best-selling book Believable Hope, where he shares his personal struggles, his recovery process and the 5-pronged approach that has caused dramatic transformation with clientele ranging from those living on the street to celebrities and everyone in-between. We talk about the stigma of mental health issues and the clinical information available around brain diseases. On a personal note, Joy has spent more than 15 years as a media expert and journalist. Some of her career highlights have included covering the impeachment hearings of President Bill Clinton and serving as anchor/health reporter for CBS affiliate WDBJ for more than a decade. She still enjoys entertaining a crowd whether as a motivational speaker or emcee, and her "news voice" has come in quite handy for commercials and other voice-over work. You’ll love her answer to my finale question and understand why today, she brings hope to people through her work as a communicator. Collectively, I believe that we can bring hope and joy to the world.

Addiction sets up a trap for us while appearing to address a deep need we are drawn to its attractiveness and the promise of feeling complete in some way a replacement for “god” is introduced to rob us of true spirituality. We become spiritually malnourished believing we have found peace, prosperity, and fulfillment in the very thing that will rob us of it.   In addiction, we mistake: - Numbness for Peace - Indulgence for Abundance - Gratification for Fulfillment - Intensity for Intimacy - Control for Safety - Perfection for Competence   ***This Statement Was Found On The Website Marr Inc.Org - Marr Addiction Treatment Center.   My conversation today is with Missy Pollack about addiction and addiction recovery. Missy Pollack works for the American Addiction Centers. She is one of the Alumni Coordinators based at Recovery First Treatment Center located in Hollywood, FL. Part of Missy's job is to work with the graduates of their treatment centers and provide them with any support that they need. “We should never, ever forget that addiction treatment is a search for meaning in a place other than using drugs.” —Nancy Campbell, historian of drug addiction (This is the third and final chapter of a three-part series. See Part 1 and Part 2.) In the final chapter of this series we travel to the heart of our modern opioid crisis. In what is now a notorious Philadelphia neighborhood called Kensington, we meet two victims of the epidemic and follow them on two distinct paths toward recovery. Our current devastating opioid crisis is unprecedented in its reach and deadliness, but it’s not the first such epidemic the United States has experienced or tried to treat. In fact, it’s the third.  Treating America’s Opioid Addiction is a three-part series that investigates how we’ve understood and treated opioid addiction over more than a century. Through the years we’ve categorized opioid addiction as some combination of a moral failure, a mental illness, a biological disease, or a crime. And though we’ve desperately wanted the problem to be something science alone can solve, the more we look, the more complicated we learn it is.  Credits Hosts: Alexis Pedrick and Elisabeth Berry Drago Reporters: Mariel Carr and Rigoberto Hernandez, with additional reporting by Meir Rinde Senior Producer: Mariel Carr Producer: Rigoberto Hernandez Audio Engineer: James Morrison  Photo illustration by Jay Muhlin Additional audio production by Dan Drago Music Music courtesy of the Audio Network.  Research Notes Interviews: Claire Clark, author of The Recovery Revolution: The Battle over Addiction Treatment in the United States.  Nancy Campbell, historian and director of Science and Technology Studies at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
