Countdown #427   Paul and Wayne are getting up there in years on this earth, so they don't mind admitting that the '90s was their heyday for most things - including, in Wayne's case, his hair.   So it is that there's a special kind of excitement that comes along with a 90s themed countdown, as the boys get to relive aspects of their youth and take the p1ss out of each other in the ways they did some thirty years previously.   This week's topic, then, is one which is a little close to Paul's heart, as the boys list their Top 10 Rock Songs of the 90s. Not surprisingly, two completely different lists are produced, but there's a special link between the two number ones which no-one could have ever seen coming :D   Find out just what that is as The Countdown continues ...   Check out the show's first draft of a website for your one-stop shop for all things related to The Countdown.   But if you want more specific directions, find so many more Countdowns - all the way back to Episode 40! - on our Podbean site.   Join The Countdown Podcast Listener Community on Facebook so you can interact more directly with Paul and Wayne and vote in the weekly poll for who has the best list!   Head on over to Patreon to find out to have your topic covered on the show and see what extras you're missing.

You’re listening to Find the Good News, Episode 109, “The Law of Change,” A Beacon Series conversation featuring Margaret Meloni, Ph.D., host of the Death Dhamma podcast and author of "Carpooling With Death: How Living With Death Will Make You Stronger, Wiser, and Fearless" - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - There is a small note tacked to a piece of corkboard near my desk, the letters stark white against an inky black square. These words, "CHANGE IS THE LAW," have stared back at me from this small slip of paper for almost 20 years, serving as a reminder of the Buddha's teaching on impermanence, reminding me that everything that comes together eventually falls apart.   At first blush, this may seem like a dismal outlook, encouraging nihilism, and a glass-half-empty perspective that could be quite depressing. While I understand this, that has not been my personal experience with teachings on impermanence, change, nor death. The truth is that in accepting this trinity of decay as a natural, ever-present part of life, I have found a luminous jewel in life that tends to shine brighter when juxtaposed with death's looming presence.   In many ways, death is a door to life unfolded, be it minutes or years. At the very least, death is a tool that can be used to appreciate every precious, life-giving drop in a half-full-glass of water. This is the door in which my guest, Margaret Meloni, operates.   Margaret is the host of the Death Dhamma podcast, a unique series of conversations about death from a Buddhist perspective, and the author of "Carpooling With Death: How Living With Death Will Make You Stronger, Wiser, and Fearless." Having lost many of her dearest, treasured loved ones, Margaret is no stranger to death.   Through her book and her podcast, she has created a unique space and resource of practical wisdom, perspective, and comfort for those who may be navigating the difficult terrain of grief and loss. Margaret doesn't make promises, or outline some mystical formula to follow that will remove death's painful sting, and I think that is what I found most appealing. Instead, what I found was an honest approach to looking at the sting itself, understanding that death's painful shock is normal, but ultimately it too is in the throes of the great law of impermanence, fleeting just as it arrives.   Her personal Buddhist practice provides obvious, tactile teachings that have been a great vehicle through her own experiences with life, death, and grief. She has the lovely ability to share those lessons in textured, nuanced ways, making them more approachable to those in the throes of misfortune.   It is my hope that you will find our conversation useful in your own life, but more, if you have experienced the loss of a loved one, I would encourage you to seek out her podcast and her book.   Now, it's time to look directly at the visage of death, to know its imprint on the world of time, to accept change as a natural—even fruitful—part of life, then tune your attention to this Good News Beacon, and press play on a little good news. ========== SUPPORT FIND THE GOOD NEWS >> https://www.findthegood.news/donate/  ========== BUY YOUR COPY OF "CARPOOLING WITH DEATH" >> www.FindTheGood.News/BookShop  ========== FIND THE GOOD NEWS IS PRODUCED BY PARKER BRAND CREATIVE SERVICES >> www.ParkerBrandUp.com   ==========

Ep. 90 - The In Zone - A Beacon Series Interview Ft. Chris Niebauer, Ph.D., Author of "No Self, No Problem: How Neuropsychology is Catching Up to Buddhism" from Hierophant Publishing ========== I once read that the very toxic escalation of ego-driven “me” culture started its ascent with the invention of the mirror. Long before one could truly see their own reflection with clarity, the best way to gain a clear picture of the self was in a relationship with others. The mirror came along, the self became even more infatuated with the appearance of the self and thus began our evolutionary slide into the maddening nature of influencer culture and selfies. We see images of ourselves—digitally displayed and shared—more than any other time in human history. Inflated egos rule the signals, indoctrinating us into tribes and cults of personality, and somewhere in this maelstrom we cling to identities that are little more than piles of historical rubbish, random filaments of experience and memory are drawn together to form a conscious being that I call “me." I look over there, and I see another cluster that I call “you." What happens when we start sifting through the curated bits and pieces that make up these selves we’ve become so enamored with? Am I my brain, my body, my memories, my nerves, my breath? When I feel love in my heart, where is my heart exactly, and what do I even mean by that? When I am sad and I suffer, where is the suffering and who is it happening to? What about my love for you, or the compassion that is activated when you are in pain? Is this indicative of a connected and collective bond between you and I that dissolves the common concepts of individualism and identity that we are familiar with? I brought these questions and more to my conversation on Find the Good News when I visited with Chris Niebauer, Ph.D., author of “No Self, No Problem: How Neuropsychology is Catching Up to Buddhism.” In the early 90s, Chris noticed many similarities in psychology, neuroscience, and the teachings of Buddhism, Taoism, and many other Eastern spiritual traditions, and he has explored these intersections for over two decades. What Chris presents is a confirmation that the latest research in neuropsychology resonates with the Buddhist doctrine of “no self,” which refers to the solidified ego identity as a fabrication of the left side of the brain. This doesn’t mean you don’t exist, or that you are somehow not real, but rather that the ego that you’ve identified with is perhaps not the real you at all.  What’s beautiful about Chris Niebauer's book, the exercises it contains, and this conversation is that they encourage us to go on an expedition into inner and uncharted zones that challenge who we think we are. “No Self, No Problem” brings us to a shared space outside of corrosive hyper-individualism, beyond the “otherhood” of the left brain, and into the right-brain experience of brotherhood. Now, tune your attention to this Good News Beacon, and press play on a little good news. ========== SUPPORT FIND THE GOOD NEWS ON PATREON >> www.Patreon.com/FindTheGoodNews  ========== MEET CHRIS NIEBAUER, PH.D. >> https://chrisniebauerphd.com/ BUY "NO SELF, NO PROBLEM" >> https://bookshop.org/books/no-self-no-problem-how-neuropsychology-is-catching-up-to-buddhism/9781938289972 ========== FIND THE GOOD NEWS IS PRODUCED BY PARKER BRAND CREATIVE SERVICES >> www.ParkerBrandUp.com   ========== SUPPORT OUR ADVERTISERS ••••••••••••• SULPHUR TODAY >> www.facebook.com/sulphurtoday   / #SulphurToday ••••••••••••• BRIMSTONE MUSEUM >> www.brimstonemuseum.org   or Call (337) 527-0357 •••••••••••••

On this episode, first Dr. Gladden and Mark discuss the health benefits of getting out into nature. Then, they’re joined by Professor Stuart Phillips to discuss his work with aging adults at McMaster Physical Activity Centre of Excellence. He talks about people in their 90s and older who are still participating in exercise programs and the youthful benefits they’re seeing. They talk about setting ourselves up for successful physical fitness that lasts well into advanced age, with both physical activity and mindset.    About the guest: Stuart Phillips obtained a Ph.D. from the University of Waterloo in Human Physiology in 1995. Any DIY project can face an incredible amount of hurdles in its lifetime; but none so crucial or catastrophic as recording. The way your project sounds is the end-all-be-all for the every day consumer. If your record isn't PRISTINE (for your liking and taste of course), it can cause major damage to your listener and fan base. "So what way is the best way?" "How much should I spend on studio time?" "Are my songs even ready for recording???" Hopefully, we can shed some light on these seemingly dark times in your wallet history.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/whydiypodcast)
