In one of the most shocking crimes to hit Delmarva, a hard-working and well-liked woman orchestrated the murder of two men with the help of her daughter and her daughter's boyfriend. Nothing about this case was simple, with complex timelines, missing men, and horrific discoveries. With the family connections with almost everyone involved in this case and very questionable decisions made by both the mastermind and police, it was still just a matter of time before her plan began to unravel. So let's explore the murders of John Charbonneau and Billy Sproates, planned by a woman very close to each of them, Linda Charbonneau. The D.C. establishment and military industrial complex are working overtime to spin up scandals and smear Trump's pick for Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth. We discuss which senators are opposing Hegseth, how to stop them and why backing down on another cabinet pick would be disastrous. Plus, Joe Biden embarrassed in Angola, DOGE may end daylight savings time, Eric Adams made a surprising statement and Britney Spears continues to go off the deep end. Denise Rhudy was killed in December of 1999. She was a mother of 4 who was just going to enjoy some time out with some colleagues, but the planning and actions of 3 men took away her future. But one of those men, while not the one who pulled the trigger, should not have been out amongst other citizens of his community. His past actions indicated that he was a criminal with violent tendencies, but some people either refused to see this or cast a blind eye towards his actions. What type of prison sentence is too harsh? Too lenient? And should judges be accountable for bad decisions that were made? Join me as I look at the history of Christopher Johnson. Who has two thumbs and loves telling us about old timey murders? It's B! Today our hosts discuss the many victims of one Mary Cowan, a young woman who would become known as the Borgia of Maine. Are Mary's motives lost to history or did she commit murder(s) for money? Who truly knows, but! B's got the deets and we've got some crimes to uncover (and some history to debate)! This episode will cover the murder of Denise Rudy who was killed by Sadiki Garden in December of 1999. His appeal brought up questions of judicial discretion, jury instruction, and the validity of eyewitness identification especially when it's cross-racial identification. As with many cases, we don't know that much about the victim, but she was a mother of four who didn't get to spend Christmas with her children that year, or even meet grandchildren in the future to spend Christmas with them. that was taken away from her, her family, and the holidays were tarnished for the family forever because of a person's decision to shoot a woman during an attempted robbery. Additionally, to be covered in a future episode, someone charged along with Garden had walked away from a work release program, and much of the coverage from this trial stemmed from this in questioning the sentencing of that person to a work release program. Today I traveled up I-15N from Salt Lake to Brigham City, UT for a visit with Casey at Box Elder News Journal. My first objective was to put a face to the name. Casey Claybaugh, who's been the publisher of the paper since 2009, switched to OHT in the middle of the COVID shutdown, so I wasn't doing any in-person onboarding. But I knew someday I would find an opportunity to make the trip. in the summer of 1992, 17 year old Angel Ormston had a really great life; a loving family, great friends, a decent job, and a secret. Actually, Angel had two secrets. See, 17 year old girls fall in love hard and fast, and sometimes, this makes them blind to people who are taking advantage of them. Angel was in love with someone who really didn't love her back, and the secret she would tell them they would try and make sure she took with her to her grave. Mark Sotka killed Angel because he wanted her to get an abortion and she refused. Eighteen years after the double murder of Jessica Watson, 22, and Matthew Macerato, 18, their family and friends are still waiting for their killer to be apprehended. December 26, 2004, the two were finishing their shift at the Casual Male Big & Tall on Kirkwood Highway in Wilmington, Delaware. When Jessica did not come home at her normal time, her older sister Anitra started to worry. By 9:00 p.m., she couldn't take it any longer and drove to the store. As she looked around the outside and found that a rear door was open, she opened it and found what no loved one should ever find. The two young people had been brutally murdered. To this day, we cannot be sure if robbery was the only motive & if the two young people were victims of a random violent crime, or if one of them or the store itself was targeted. Eric Rudolph. On July 27, 1996, the world sat shocked to its core as a crudely made pipe bomb exploded in the middle of the crowded Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta Georgia. 2 people were killed and over 100 people were injured. A bomb exploding in a park is terrorizing enough, but the timing of this bomb, One week into the 96 Summer Olympic games seemed to violate the Olympic spirit. It would take the FBI nearly 7 years to capture the Olympic bomber, and before his capture 3 more bombs would take the lives of 2 more people and injuring many others. for details, show notes, and pictures please visit Thearchivistpodcast.comSources for this episode: FBI.govBomb sears nation's soul by Andrew Martin and Karen Brandon (Chicago Tribune, July 28, 1996)‘Hero' guard a suspect (News Journal, Mansfield OH July 31, 1996)Olympic bombing suspect becoming more optimistic by Mitchell Lansberg (The Anniston Star, Anniston Alabama, August 2, 1996)Olympic bombing probe plods along. Tom's next guest is Stewart Bainum. He is a successful businessman (as board chair of the worldwide Choice Hotels chain), philanthropist, and former Maryland delegate and senator. Last year, he tried to buy the Baltimore Sun with the intention of turning it into a non-profit news organization focusing on local news. That effort was rebuffed by the Sun's owners, a hedge fund called Alden Global Capital. Working with former Baltimore County Executive Ted Venetoulis, Bainum began planning a new local news operation, an on-line, multi-pronged platform that will be overseen by the Venetoulis Institute for Local Journalism, a not-for-profit foundation named in honor of Mr. Venetoulis, who passed away last month from pancreatic cancer. The new digital news journal will be called The Baltimore Banner, and plans now call for it to launch by the summer of 2022, with a staff of roughly 50 journalists. (Journalists and others interested in working for The Banner can apply on the Venetoulis Institute Website.) Stewart Bainum joins us on Zoom from his office in Rockville, Maryland, to tell us more about the Banner enterprise, and what it could mean for local journalism.
