Burdensome workload is the constant cry of teachers, and marking is so often front and centre of the tasks which weigh us down. Why are we still so obsessed with written feedback? Is it really for the students? Or is it about accountability and box ticking?

Episode 38: State of Washington v. Meta Platforms, Inc.State of Washington v. Meta Platforms, Inc., argued before the Supreme Court of Washington on October 28, 2025. Argued by Robert McKenna (on behalf of Meta Platforms, Inc.) and Cristina Sepe, Deputy Solicitor General of the State of Washington (on behalf of State of Washington) .Background of the case, from the Supplemental Brief of Petitioner Meta:The campaign finance law at issue here has made it irrational and unworkable for digital platforms to carry political ads targeting Washington state and local elections. Major platforms have banned these ads as a result. The law tips the scales against disempowered political actors who need low-cost but effective digital advertising to communicate with voters. And the State has failed to justify that result under the First Amendment. In 2018, the State expanded the Fair Campaign Practices Act (FCPA) to impose burdensome disclosure obligations on “digital communication platforms.” The State now requires such platforms to maintain extensive information about any advertisement in the last five years that constitutes “political advertising,” and disclose this information upon request to any person or entity—anywhere in the world and at any time—within two business days. Candidates and campaigns, meanwhile, have less demanding disclosure obligations. And even minor noncompliance carries significant penalties for platforms: Based on its failure to timely satisfy 12 requests for information from just three individuals, Meta faces a $35 million judgment. There is no reason for Meta—or any other platform operator—to incur the threat of massive penalties (and high compliance costs), by continuing to carry ads that provide very little revenue. It is no surprise, then, that Meta and others banned Washington political ads from their platforms.Statement of the Issues, from the Supplemental Brief of Petitioner Meta:Whether the FCPA and implementing regulations violate the First Amendment because they impose unjustifiable burdens on digital communication platforms and fail to further the State's purported interest in educating its electorate about political ad purchasers and their expenditures through narrowly tailored means. See RCW 42.17A.345(1); WAC 390-18-050 (together, “disclosure law”).Whether a penalty imposed for violating the disclosure law's obligation to provide responsive information “promptly upon request” should be calculated based on the number of requests or the number of ads subject to each request.Whether a $35 million judgment against Meta for failing to respond to 12 requests with every piece of required information within two business days is an unconstitutionally excessive fine under the Eighth Amendment.Resources:Institute for Free Speech amicus brief in Meta v. What is really happening with Israel today—and why should it matter to every Bible-believing Christian? In this powerful message, Pastor Bill Monroe walks through Zechariah's prophecy and explains the prophetic significance of Israel as “that burdensome stone.” With antisemitism on the rise—even among evangelicals—this sermon offers both biblical clarity and a Gospel-centered warning. You'll learn why Israel is the most unique nation in history, how the Abrahamic covenant still matters today, and why we must keep our eyes on the “bellwether” of prophecy. And most importantly, you'll hear a clear call to know Jesus Christ as your personal Savior.Don't just scroll—watch, worship, and share. We're living in prophetic times. If you don't know Christ, now is the time to run to Him.Key Scriptures:Zechariah 12:1–3Genesis 12:1–3Romans 11:1–26Ezekiel 37Deuteronomy 7:7–9Subscribe to stay grounded in biblical truth.
The White House this week announced a framework for negotiating a trade agreement with Indonesia. More details are available in this joint statement from the U.S. and Indonesian governments and this White House fact sheet. U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) Vice President of Economic Analysis Erin Borror points out that while Indonesian tariffs on U.S. red meat are only 5%, the country places a number of burdensome, non-tariff trade barriers on U.S. product, including plant-by-plant inspections of U.S. facilities and a complicated import licensing regime. If those non-tariff barriers can be cleared in an Indonesian trade deal, the immediate opportunity is an estimated $250 million in annual beef sales. Opening Indonesia more freely to U.S. beef could also help offset the impact of the current trade impasse with China by increasing demand for products such as short plates and short ribs. While Indonesia is a largely Muslim nation, there are more than 30 million non-Muslim residents who are exhibiting a growing demand for U.S. pork. And while U.S. pork faces similar barriers as beef, the small volume of U.S. pork exported there has doubled this year. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

I John 4:20 – 5:420 If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. 21 And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.5 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him. 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome. Purpose of I John: Assurance True Love for God (4:20-21) True Love for God's People (5:1-2) God's Commandments are not Burdensome. (5:3) Our Response

Deut. 4:1–8 Isa. 57:14–21 Matt. 7:12–20 1 John 5:1–5 In a book for business leaders calledThe Switch: How to Change Things When Change Is Hard, the authors say that employees eventually “[run] out of self-control.” In other words, no matter how you try to light the fire inside people to be successful, you can't force it. There's something like that in the Christian life when it comes to obedience. We are our own worst bosses. We tell ourselves to do better, but keep stumbling. In this message, we learn from 1 John 5 how to overcome obstacles to obedience, not by worldly means, but through faith in Christ.
In this week's episode, Aaron and Kevin are discussing 1 John chapter 5 where John says that God's laws are not burdensome. That is hard for us to imagine. We always imagine that laws will be a burden on us. So, what does it meant that God's laws are not burdensome? It means that we will actually love God's laws and want to do them because we recognize that they're good for us and good for the world. But, this change of heart will not come of our own doing, it will only come through the transformation by the Holy Spirit. As always, it's our goal that you'll hear something in this conversation and start another conversation with someone else. We hope you enjoy it!

Interview with Samuel Gregg America's entrepreneurial spirit is part of what defines its national character. Americans celebrate the notion that one can build a business from the ground up by virtue of sheer determination and perseverance, whether it's a neighborhood ice cream shop or a global auto company. This zeal for free enterprise quickly catapulted the country into an economic powerhouse and continues to captivate dreamers and innovators throughout the world. Yet America faces real obstacles to sustaining an environment that's ripe for entrepreneurship. Burdensome red tape, a dire debt crisis and the vast expansion of the administrative state are barriers to entry and growth for businesses. Our guest on this episode of Voices of Freedom is Samuel Gregg, one the country's preeminent free enterprise scholars and a 2024 Bradley Prize winner. He shares his thoughts on how to keep America's entrepreneurial vitality strong, as well as insights into current economic debates. Samuel Gregg is the Friedrich Hayek Chair in Economics and Economic History at the American Institute for Economic Research. He has written and spoken extensively on questions of political economy, economic history, monetary theory and policy, and natural law theory. He's the author of 16 books, including his most recent book, The Next American Economy: Nation, State and Markets in an Uncertain World. Topics Discussed on this Episode: America's support of free enterprise compared to other countries How entrepreneurial success stories have shaped Gregg's perspective Improving the climate and outlook for American industry Big Tech, woke capitalism and the weakening of the family How proponents of limited government can address the breakdown of civil society China's economic outlooks and lessons for the US The intersection of markets and morality The conditions that will allow the next generation of entrepreneurs to succeed What it means to win a Bradley Prize
