They discuss everything from diversity, equity, and inclusivity efforts on the Ross Veterinary School campus, to the importance of role models, and knowing when to make your move in life is vital for success.    HOST AND GUEST BIOS: Dr. Matt Holland Matt Holland, DVM graduated from the University of Illinois CVM class of 2017. He is a Veterinary & Pre-Vet Student Advocate for the VIN Student Team and his interests are Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion, mental wellness, environmental health, student debt, & policy. His interest in policy led him to Washington, D.C. after graduating, where he completed the AVMA/AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of Science) Congressional Fellowship in the office of Illinois Congresswoman Cheri Bustos and the AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellowship at the USDA National Institute of Food & Agriculture. Originally from a suburb of Chicago, IL, he came to veterinary medicine as a second career. After graduating in 2007 from Drake University with a B.A. in radio and television journalism, he worked as a freelance television producer for various media outlets in Chicago and New York City including Big Ten Network, Major League Baseball Network, and the Chicago Bears. During veterinary school, he found a love for giving back to the profession, and one of his proudest achievements is serving as SAVMA President. He is thankful for the opportunity to keep giving back as a VIN Foundation board member and excited for the future of the VIN Foundation.   Junior Saint Preux  Junior Saint Preux is a 4th-year student at Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine. Originally from Orlando, FL he received his Bachelor’s of Biological Sciences from Bethune-Cookman University. After several twists and turns, Junior had to decide between his athletic career in track and field or continuing his education. Through the support of his fraternity brothers of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., he made his way to Florida A&M University Pharmacy School for one semester before ultimately realizing the importance of being passionate about a direction. Junior knew a career in veterinary medicine was his calling with a desire to help both people and animals. Upon starting at Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine he recognized an opportunity to improve the veterinary school experience for himself and his classmates. He began to dedicate his time to SAVMA and was elected Chapter President, where he focused his efforts on addressing the importance of diversity and inclusion and making Ross a safer and more welcoming campus for minorities and underrepresented students. Junior also collaborated with classmates to start the first student chapter of the National Association for Black Veterinarians, creating a safe space for African Americans and allies at Ross. Through this effort, they have also been able to mentor undergraduate students, create their own mentoring program to connect with alumni for guidance and collaborate with the school counselors to address issues regarding the mental health of the minority students. Junior believes in the motto “lifting as we climb,” and continues to focus his efforts in the veterinary profession with this mission.    LINKS AND INFORMATION: National Association for Black Veterinarians: https://nabvonline.org/ SAVMA: https://www.avma.org/membership/SAVMA Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine: https://vet.rossu.edu/ University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine: https://cvm.missouri.edu/ Omega Psi Phi Fraternity: https://oppf.org/   You may learn more about the VIN Foundation, on the website, or join the conversation on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter. Ep. 80 - The Clunky Oars - A Beacon Series Interview Ft. Greg Soden of The Classical Idea Podcast========== It wasn’t long after I started listening to podcasts that I got the bug to produce one, the one you’re listening too right now.  Over this past year of producing and listening, I’ve learned a lot, and whether they know it, many of the hosts and producers of my favorite podcasts have been unwitting instructors. Long before the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, I had an opportunity to visit with the gracious host and producer of one such show, “The Classical Ideas Podcast.”  I don’t know how you discover new podcasts, but I typically find new shows when I search for specific topics, and the day that I landed on Greg Soden’s show, I was searching for conversations about one of my favorite wisdom books, “The Tao Te Ching." As it turns out, it’s one of Greg’s favorite books as well. I listened to that episode, and then another, and then another, and before long I was a devoted listener, subscriber, and Patreon supporter. Through the course of Greg’s show, I feel like I got to know him and his interests as he would interview his diverse range of guests across the spectrum of religion and philosophy. It’s strange how that happens, how in the course of interviewing others there is a transference of small details that accumulate over time, creating a wonderfully rich portrait of the host. That’s how I came to learn many of the details of Greg Soden’s journey to “The Classical Ideas Podcast,” which was born during his time as the language arts and religious studies teacher in Columbia, Missouri. Greg is now a teacher and assistant trainer for the University of Missouri College of Education’s K-12 program, and he is still bringing us new episodes of “The Classical Ideas Podcast,” where he shares his wide-spectrum conversations. He’s brought us colorful and interesting interviews, such as Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Ian Johnson, and the daughters of famous Zen philosopher Allen Watts. “The Classical Ideas Podcast” has brought us conversations about indigenous religion, Unitarian Universalism, Buddhism, Taoism, Sufism, the Tao Te Ching, the Bhagavad Gita, St. Francis of Assisi, Evangelical Christianity, the Baha’i, Nordic studies, and many, many more. I felt that Greg and I had an instant rapport, and I hope you will sense this during our visit. I’m grateful for his time, and for the good work, he is doing to help anyone seeking multicultural and interfaith knowledge to find it. I believe this with all my heart; this world will always need beings like Greg Soden. Now, it’s time to tune your brainwaves to this Good New Beacon, and press play on a little good news. ==========SUPPORT FIND THE GOOD NEWS ON PATREON >> www.Patreon.com/FindTheGoodNews ==========SUBSCRIBE TO THE CLASSICAL IDEAS PODCAST >> https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-classical-ideas-podcast/id1268915829==========FIND THE GOOD NEWS IS PRODUCED BY PARKER BRAND CREATIVE SERVICES >> www.ParkerBrandUp.com==========SUPPORT OUR ADVERTISERS•••••••••••••SULPHUR TODAY >> www.facebook.com/sulphurtoday / #SulphurToday•••••••••••••BRIMSTONE MUSEUM >> www.brimstonemuseum.org or Call (337) 527-0357•••••••••••••

In this episode, I have the honor of interviewing Sean Medley. Sean lives in St. Louis, MO with his fiancé Lisa. He is an artist and writer and holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Digital Animation from Missouri College. Sean attended a strict Southern Baptist school from Kindergarten through Seventh Grade. This instilled in him a deep conviction of the reality of God. While still a teenager, Sean discovered the Eastern Orthodox Church, and at age seventeen, was baptized into Orthodoxy via the Greek Old Calendarists, who are traditionalists not in communion with mainstream Orthodoxy. Sean continued attending traditionalist parishes of the Greek Old Calendarist and White Russian Churches, and from 2001 to 2006 he was a novice at Holy Cross Monastery in Wayne, WV, and St. Gregory of Sinai Monastery in Kelseyville, CA. A practitioner of the Jesus Prayer and Christian theurgy, Sean has created a series of Gnostic-inspired digital art, which can be viewed at his website, link in the show notes. He is also the author of the yet unpublished Gnostic-themed novel, A Scroll Of Light And Darkness. During the interview, we discussed several topics including, His experience as a Greek Old Calendarists Orthodox Christian. What monastic life was like for him and why he left the monastery. We talk about his practice of Christian theurgy. Finally, we talk about his art and his writing. This episode is sponsored in part by Convergent Streams: The Premier ISM Magazine.  If you haven’t checked out Convergent Streams I encourage you to do so, why?  Because it’s a great publication AND when you support Convergent Streams you are supporting a ministry within the Independent Sacramental Movement.  How can you go wrong with that?  Check it out at convergentstreams.org.  I like the print copy but you can also get it in ebook format.
