After getting the go-ahead from my neurologist, I took the opportunity to try scuba diving with PADI in Playa Potrero, Costa Rica. Unable to do the standard forms of exercise, I dared to dream this might be something I would be able to do despite my brain injury. I sat down with Kristin Vallette-Wirth to talk about the mental health benefits of scuba diving and what my experience brought up for me. Kristin is the Chief Brand and Membership Officer for PADI and has experience with using diving as a form of healing both physically and mentally helping her husband heal from a life-changing accident.
It's been about a year since we have had Diana Vallett on the mic, and we are so grateful she is back. It would be easy to say that the theme of this episode is shifting, as it is a word you will hear all throughout. Diana herself speaks of the “shifts” she has experienced in the past year: shifting from mourning to healing, from a steady online presence to taking a back seat, from holding on too tight to learning to let go, from being distracted to being more attentive to the souls around her. And she speaks of what these shifts require…death. Because, as we have just witnessed during the Triduum…from death comes beautiful life! We hope after hearing this episode, you can allow Easter to transform you too!

Diana, her husband, their five children and her mother left their home and squeezed into a tiny apartment as Hurricane Laura struck Louisiana during the pandemic. Diana shares the aftermath of the hurricane and how she continues to discover God's immense beauty in others throughout this difficult time. Themes explored are God with us, people over ideas, the American spirit, beauty from ashes, spiritual direction and finding God in the messiness.

Ep. 79 - The 1-Hour Mountain - A COVID-19 Beacon Series Interview Ft. Diana Vallette========== Today, human beings all over the world are making social and economic sacrifices to stop the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic, COVID-19. Now, I’m going back to visit with many of the Good Newsy guests that helped build the foundation of this show to learn how they’re navigating these strange times. In this special Beacon Series episode, I visit with my spiritual sister, ally, and friend, Diana Vallette. My proximity to Diana mostly begins and ends within social media apps, and yet I feel like I really do know her. From my perspective, one of Diana’s great gifts is her ability to self reflect, and then share her discoveries with little-to-no filter. Since the time I connected with Diana online, I feel like I’ve watched her go through a series of changes, and that’s one of her other great gifts; she allows herself to change. I could tell you that I wanted to talk to her as a part of this series because I wanted her perspective on homeschooling or spin a yarn that it was because of her spiritual contemplations. The truth is, both of those things are true, but honestly I just wanted to talk to her, and I’m glad I did. Diana opens a door and makes a safe space for people to explore their spiritual boundaries, and that’s a place I like to hang out. Full disclosure? I needed this conversation. It was invigorating, exciting, and I could feel my heart and mind connecting throughout our talk. I learned, yet again, that people may be physically distant, but when the Spirit connects them they are never far apart. With this COVID-19 Beacon Series, I invite you to take a break from mainstream news and spend some time with good people that are dealing with some of the same struggles you are. Now, seek out that inner space, relax, open your mind, and press play on a little good news. ==========SUPPORT FIND THE GOOD NEWS ON PATREON >> www.Patreon.com/FindTheGoodNews ==========CONNECT WITH DIANA >> www.facebook.com/DianaVDorta==========FIND THE GOOD NEWS IS PRODUCED BY PARKER BRAND CREATIVE SERVICES >> www.ParkerBrandUp.com==========SUPPORT OUR ADVERTISERS•••••••••••••SULPHUR TODAY >> www.facebook.com/sulphurtoday / #SulphurToday•••••••••••••BRIMSTONE MUSEUM >> www.brimstonemuseum.org or Call (337) 527-0357•••••••••••••
Alan Baker from Cartograph Wines joins Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger on the first California Wine Country show of 2020. He was last on this show in December of 2018. Alan Baker was a Music Major in college and worked with music in public radio for 15 years before he got into wine. "It was a Riesling that got me hooked," he says, as he tells the story. In 2005 he moved to Healdsburg. "I got bit by the bug." He loved it so much that it was time to get into the business. He made wines at Crushpad in San Francisco, then he got hired to work there. He did also take some classes at UC Davis. 2009 was the first Cartograph vintage. They make about 2000 cases per year. The Cartograph label is a circle with five points, which show where he and his wife discovered wine, separately at first and then together. His tasting room is downtown Healdsburg next to Vallette restaurant (whose owners are also Steve's friends.) Healdsburg has a fun weekend January 24-26, the Healdsburg Tastemaker Weekend. It is a promotion for the community but also a time of year when chefs are not quite as busy as usual so they are able to book special events with chefs and winemakers. There are also cooking classes with Cousteau Bakery. Go to stayhealdsburg.com to find the Tastemaker Weekend link. They are tasting a 2016 Riesling that Dan says is "just about ready," now. Dan likes to keep Rieslings at five years, which is when they expand. Dan says it's a year shy of when he would drink it. It is in its prime right now. It has good acidity and has very little sugar. Dan Berger tells about how difficult it is to start small and go commercial and have it be profitable. Alan says it comes out as an expensive hobby and a labor of love, still, while it develops. This year for the first time they are doing two Rieslings. The got some from Willamette Valley in Oregon and some other Riesling grapes from Marin County. They picked late, October 25, at 20.1 Brix, not very ripe. Dan says that sweetness sells Rieslings but Alan is "a dry freak" who makes a Dry Riesling and then has to wait for it. Also in the studio today is Glenn Dennler, also a winemaker. For the rest of the episode they taste and discuss wines from both of today's guests.

I don’t think Diana Vallette knew that she was one of the many inspirations behind Find the Good News. How could she? We’d never met face-to-face, and we didn’t really know each other all that well. I’d been watching Diana’s activity online for quite a while before asking her to visit with me, and I was intrigued by the person so willing to share her spiritual journey. Who was this Catholic mother that was making these really personal videos, sharing her inner thoughts, questions, concerns, insecurities, and doubts? After doing a bit of digging what I discovered was a woman whose testimony revealed she had been an atheist, living in a framework that outlined any kind of God or Creator as a fictional story that adults like to tell themselves, not all that different from the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, or Santa Clause, a narrative that had been imprinted on her as a child. As all children do, Diana grew up, and eventually grew out of atheism and into a relationship with God. I might be wrong, but I believe that it was her doubt and insecurities about a Creator that has created her ability to reach people the way she does. Diana is on a path of authentic discovery, and what it seems she’s discovered is a way to approach friendship with God in a humble, authentic way, and she’s been called to share what she’s learned with others. That path isn’t always smooth or pretty. She’s doesn’t pretend to be a bright and shiny Catholic that has all the answers; she presents herself plainly and without a veil. She is showing other seekers that you can approach the Creator in doubt, fear, worry, and confusion. She’s found an embrace waiting on the other side of all those things. She’s been called to speak, to write, to share, even though she’s clearly been terrified to do any of those things. Regardless, she has stepped out front anyway,… and she’s sometimes taken the heat that comes with it. Her willingness to share encouraged me to share many things that I’ve kept to myself, things I’ve doubted, things I’ve feared. I share them for the same reason that she does, in the hope that by sharing the truth it will motivate another to find a spiritual path. I highly value people that allow themselves to be seen as they are; we need more of that in this world. By revealing our true faces we can have more authentic relationships. This is the face God sees, and if we’re being honest with ourselves it’s the face we recognize too, though we may fear to show it to the world. Diana Vallette is touching people by putting her true face forward and there are very real, very good fruits to picked from what she’s growing. ========== FOR MORE INFO ABOUT DIANA VALLETTE >> www.facebook.com/DianaVDorta or www.instagram.com/dianadivulges or www.dianadivulges.com ========== THIS EPISODE IS SPONSORED BY PARKER BRAND CREATIVE SERVICES >> www.ParkerBrandUp.com ========== SUPPORT OUR ADVERTISERS ••••••••••••• BEN VON DUKE'S HANDYMAN SERVICE >> www.facebook.com/BenVonDukeMaint or Call (337) 540-1355 ••••••••••••• ASAP GLASS >> www.ASAPGlassCo.com or Call (337) 527-5455 ••••••••••••• BRIMSTONE MUSEUM >> www.brimstonemuseum.org or Call (337) 527-0357 •••••••••••••
I got to have the privilege to talk to this awesome christian chick, Diana. She's over on Instagram (here) and her website at DianaDivulges.com. Diana Valette is a catholic convert who, until about 5 years ago was a non-believer who thought Christians were either a) dumb as rocks or b) lying about believing. She talks about why it’s OK to have those types of thoughts where you question faith and God and what you can do with them. She's really big on truth telling, showing the mess and meeting people exactly where they are and it is SO refreshing. She loves red wine and Mexican food (and Cuban food and ALL the food). Say's she's a mediocre mom but she's clearly rocking the craziness that is mom life with 4 kids, their oldest is 8 and she has one on the way. She's kinda a big deal - Scott Hahn once complimented her on her writing and she's actually hung out with Jenn Fullwiler before. You can reach her at DianaDivulges on Instagram, or via her website DianaDivulges.com Don't forget to hook up with me and some other mamas!
I met Brandon when he was a bar tender in Santa Rosa's local whisky bar named Jack and Tonys. I have an interest in Brandon's work because he builds cocktail menus and is constantly creating new drinks. He is now running the bar in Healdsburg's Vallette.
