Today I'm talking to Dr. Anita Johnston Ph.D., Depth Psychologist, Certified Eating Disorder Specialist, and author of Eating in the Light of the Moon: How Women Can Transform Their Relationships with Food Through Myth, Metaphor and Storytelling, which has been published in seven languages. Dr. Anita was a pioneer in eating disorders therapy and has been treating eating difficulties and body image distress for over 35 years. She has developed eating disorder programs nationally and internationally and currently serves as Founder and Executive Director or Ai Pono Hawaii Eating Disorders Programs which has a residential program in Maui. Dr. Anita is very aware that as humans, we can understand complex concepts using metaphor in memorable ways – we love stories and relating this to real life. In society and in eating disorder recovery in general, we often use left brain, logical ways of healing, whereas engaging with our creativity and imagination engages the right brain, and for many people, this is where change actively occurs. Dr, Anita is passionate about this. In this episode today, Dr. Anita does a deep dive into cracking the code of disordered eating using metaphor and storytelling. She opens her treasure chest of metaphors for us today. She also shares about the neuroscience and brain chemistry changes that occur when we suddenly make a powerful recovery shift. This is a fascinating conversation and I hope that you enjoy it. “My favorite part about Jungian Analysis is in comparison to a lot of different psychological theories or practices, it doesn't leave out the soul. It includes the soul. I can't imagine doing something without considering that part of us,” - Melissa Kim Corter, Writer & Depth Psychologist. In this episode of Real Talk, Grace speaks with Melissa Kim Corter, Writer & Depth Psychologist, about her practice of the Jungian Analysis and its use of dreams and symbols to help individuals overcome obstacles and set in motion success both personally and professionally. In this episode we'll dive deeper into these key takeaways: Connection. In the Jungian philosophy, the mind and body are intricately linked, fostering a sense of interconnectedness with the broader world and other individuals. This notion of a profound understanding or deeper self resonates across various religious and belief systems. The Power of Intuition. While intuition itself is subject to the nuances of our individual psychological makeup, our ability to channel this intuition can be strengthened. Listen as Melissa shares a few processes that can help strengthen your intuition. Research indicates that dedicating as little as 15 minutes daily to engage with this process can facilitate a transition from heightened Beta or Alpha Beta brainwave states to the more receptive Theta state. Just begin. Start by jotting down your thoughts - what you're grateful for, or even what happened that day. In doing so, you'll move your consciousness into a more tranquil state. As Theta impulses begin to manifest, intuitive insights may emerge, initially indistinguishable from one's own internal dialogue. Embrace the ego. In our conscious practice we must discern when our ego is safeguarding us from perceived harm, and instances where it instills unwarranted fear of exploration. How do we do this? Write. Provide these thoughts an outlet so they do not interfere with intuitive processes. If you're looking to celebrate connection and community, tune in for this special episode. With so much love & gratitude, Grace

Episode 34: Dr. Anita Johnston joins me to discuss the root cause of disordered eating and how to heal through story and metaphor. I struggled with an eating disorder in high school. I couldn't afford therapy then and felt ashamed about asking for help. I felt like I should know better. So I spent my free time alone in the library, educating myself about healing and food's role in my life. I slowly untangled the knot inside me and went into complete remission. It was nice to chat openly about my shadow with Dr. Johnston. She is a wealth of information and offers skilled guidance to those who seek it. On this episode, I return with Bradley Olson, a Depth Psychologist with a Ph.D. in Mythological Studies with an emphasis in Jungian Analytical Psychology. Bradley is the host of the Joseph Campbell foundation's flagship podcast, Pathways With Joseph Campbell. Bradley is also the editor of the MythBlast Series and a leading expert on Joseph Campbell's work. Our conversation covers so many rich topics that I've split it up into two episodes. For those who don't know Joseph Campbell's work, he was an American writer. He was a professor of literature at Sarah Lawrence College who worked in comparative mythology and comparative religion. His work covers many aspects of the human experience. Campbell's best-known work is his book The Hero with a Thousand Faces (1949), in which he discusses his theory of the journey of the archetypal hero shared by world mythologies, termed the monomyth. Since the publication of The Hero with a Thousand Faces, Campbell's theories have been applied by a wide variety of modern writers and artists. His philosophy has been summarized by his own often repeated phrase: "Follow your bliss." He gained recognition in Hollywood when George Lucas credited Campbell's work as influencing his Star Wars saga. Bradley is an incredible gatekeeper of this wisdom which applies today as much as ever. We cover topics like the hero's journey, power struggles, the currency of fear, and the art of tenderness and kindness. Let's get to it. Bayo joins us from his home in Chennai India but grew up in Lagos, Nigeria. Losing his father as a young teen had him start a search for knowledge and meaning – a search that has intensified throughout his life. As a teen he hustled to make a living in the street to help support his family and save for university studies. At university, he was destined to be “The Total Man” until he unfurled his mind and his beliefs. The conversation goes to exciting depths and hidden corners … we discuss our Entanglement (oh, our entanglement!), the seditiousness of writing, the “bible and a pencil”, the act of making his father through his daughters, being “dire-whelmed”, seeing death as a soundscape, the act of creation – and shiny dishes. Athena is originally from Johannesburg, South Africa. Athena was a highly intuitive child and learned not to demonstrate this with most, believing that there was little acceptance of these abilities in her circles. As a young adult she was trying to understand her place in the world when she had a dream that had a profound impact on her life's direction. We move on to discuss the importance of the “divinity within” and how we may have been shut off from our own sacred knowledge. We learn about Athena's experience in confronting a demon, and in the middle of discussing the idea of malevolence beings we face a power outage in our conversation (not joking). But this doesn't thwart our determination. We discuss the dismissive nature of modern Western culture on the exploration of the dream realm and we discuss what might be brewing underneath anyway … a yearning from each of us to be awake. You're listening to Find the Good News, Episode 114, “The Foldover Worlds,” A Beacon Series conversation featuring Dream Analyst and Depth Psychologist, Tayria Ward. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - I started having potent dreams on repeat when I was a young boy, mindscapes so dense with texture and gravity that it was not unusual for me to question whether the space I found myself in upon awakening wasn't in fact the dream. In my early twenties, these flavorful dreams—called such because I could taste them in my mouth—seemed to intensify, often bringing heavy imagery, charged with some type of misfortune. Still, other dreams—much brighter and lighter in tone—have had an almost vision-like quality, leading my heart and mind to some type of comforting sense of hope. I've spoken of these things on my other podcast, The Dawn Deacon. Over the years I've taken great care to hold these things close and safe, not sharing them openly. I've learned that sharing your dreams in a serious way isn't always taken very seriously, at least within most of the larger rings I've traveled. This started to change last year when I opened the door to this podcast to guests from outside my local community, and this is also how I met my friend, dream analyst, and depth psychologist, Tayria Ward. Tayria and I were in a group related to a book I'd featured on the show. There was quite a large number of people in the group, but Tayria's additions to the conversation were always insightful. One day she shared an image of her father, herself, and Buckminster Fuller. During my early age of exploration and discovery after an awakening experience, I'd landed in a sphere of curiosity surrounding Buckminster Fuller; his story fascinated me. The photo of Tayria with her father and Bucky breathed life into my old interest, so I reached out to her. We became fast friends through this node, and have stayed in a type of orbit since, eventually become letter-and-stamp pen pals, a form of communication that, thanks to Tayria's rich letters, I am learning to cherish all over again. Tayria's journey is as rich and textured as my young dreams, filled with the promise that there is more connective tissue between our slumbering minds and what most call the real world. What I admire most about Tayria is her willingness to kindly walk with others along the vastness of their dreamscapes, acting as a type of dream sherpa, bringing all her experience to each space or plateau. To me, she seems to stands on many layers at once, with an ability to perceive the overlapping slides between individuals and their personal dreams, as well as their experiences, looking for collective and synchronistic lock-ups that may hold greater meaning for everyone on earth. While our visit is about the layered worlds of visions and dreams, it is also grounded in very real experiences that play out in our dusty, ordinary lives. As you listen to my conversations with Tayria, I feel strongly that you will sense that firm tether to this realm of the real, and that you will find a great treasure, as I have, in getting to know Tayria Ward. Now, I invite you to find a fluid, flexible space that allows you to sink your consciousness a bit deeper than the solid footing near the shallows, allowing shifting mind-sand and heart-waves to make you question the direction gravity plays on your body, then tune your attention to this Good News Beacon, and press play on a little good news. ========== SUPPORT FIND THE GOOD NEWS — https://www.findthegood.news/donate/ ========== LEARN MORE ABOUT TAYRIA WARD — https://tayriaward.com/ DREAM SYMPOSIUM — https://tayriaward.com/dream-symposium/ ========== FIND THE GOOD NEWS IS PRODUCED BY PARKER BRAND CREATIVE SERVICES — www.ParkerBrandUp.com ==========
"True Adults and Elders are people who know why they were born, who know who they are as unique individual participants in the web of life, and who, in most everything they do, creatively occupy their distinctive ecological niche as a life-enhancing gift to their people and to the greater Earth community." – Dr Bill Ploktin
Today we have Sean Patrick McPeak back on our show. He is a powerful healer, therapist, Psychotherapist, Depth Psychologist, and Shaman. He has a gift for acting as a mirror and reflecting back the most delicate parts of your soul that need healing. He holds the space you need to heal old wounds and find the insights that will assist you as you heal. We are excited to share this insightful conversation with you. Shifting your perspective is a hidden superpower. So often, we respond from those unconscious parts of the wounds we carry. We tend to get stuck in the loop of the stories we tell, like a hamster wheel. Breaking this pattern and old beliefs can be as simple as shifting the way we perceive it. If you find yourself in the middle of an ending in life, you may feel like you are being swallowed whole by the anxiety of the darkness that surrounds you. If you can make room for the possibility of a beginning, this little shift can act as a flicker of light in the impossible times that you have to contend with. It's always a good practice to understand how your physical body reacts to trauma. When bad things happen, where do you feel it in your body? Sean explains that understanding these pings are actually messengers trying to inform you. If you allow yourself to get curious about these messengers who show up in the way of feelings, you can ask more profound questions and move towards healing. Shifting your perspective is the first step in re-programming a new neural network of beliefs and responses to anxiety and trauma. She is the co-creator of the online course, Light of the Moon Café, which is an interactive “workbook” and women’s support circle for Eating in the Light of the Moon. She has been working in the field of women’s issues, feminine spirituality, and disordered eating for over 35 years and is a thought leader in understanding the Feminine as it relates to struggles with eating and body image. She is currently the Clinical Director of ‘Ai Pono** Eating Disorder Programs in Hawaii, including a residential treatment program in Maui. She is best known for her use of metaphor and the ancient wisdom found in storytelling, along with her training as a clinical psychologist, to address the struggles of women, their bodies and relationships. Show notes: The first time I found Eating in the Light of the Moon (and how I had sooo much resistence to picking it up) "If you could think your way out of your eating disorder, you would have done it a long time ago." Why recovery is more of a labyrinth than a maze Recovery is not about finding your way in and out-- it's about reaching the center Using archetypes (by Carl Jung) to heal your disordered eating and relationship with your body How the Mother Archetype can provide for you the love that you crave within: for people who struggle with eating disorders, what they are really desiring is mothering The reason why people reach for food when they are deeply craving mothering is because food is comfort Ways you can get mothering energy outside of your mom The difference between belonging and fitting in The Masculine part of ourselves desires to check things off, get things done and do things the correct way The Feminine part of ourselves is the emotional, intuitive, relational side of ourselves Considering that our society prioritizes the Masculine energy, you can see how the Masculine body is also prioritized (hardness, six-pack, buns of steel) How we have been brainwashed into thinking that fat = bad (and the history behind it) When people feel bad as adults, they immediately latch onto thinking that the root of the pain is because of their body The story of the King and his dog-- and how it's a perfect metaphor for how we treat our own bodies every day The story of the letting go of a log when you are deep in water--- and how it's a metaphor for recovery Speaking your truth is not about getting exactly what it is that you want The link between feeling sexy/free in the bedroom and disordered eating How a women's Full Moon Circle is a brilliant way to feel your sexuality without incorporating sex Must-read book: Crones Don't Whine and Goddesses in Older Women Connect with Anita: FREE GIFT, The Food and Metaphor Guide: LightofTheMoonCafe.com/mbm Facebook Instagram Twitter Grab her book HERE Contact: Anita@LightoftheMoonCafe.com

We all know the voice of the “inner critic” where nothing is ever good enough and you’re on high alert about… well, most everything. The job of the critic voice (which is not YOU) is to keep you worried and afraid. Anita Johnston thinks worrying is a good use of imagination because it brings transformational change. A pioneer of the use of metaphor in helping people heal, Anita discusses how you can acknowledge your inner critic “voice” without giving her front stage permission to rule your life and all the choices you make around food, exercise, and body. Anita shares an activity from her Light of the Moon Cafe course on “creating the inner mother.” Tune in to practice this activity yourself and get several of her metaphorical lessons that have helped me over the years and embrace them as part of your Body Kindness transformation, including my all-time favorite “The Log”. Plus, you’ll get a story about my surprise dinner with Anita way back in the day when I was just coming out of dieting and how watching her eat a steak really helped me. --- Get to know Anita Anita Johnston, Ph.D., is a Depth Psychologist, storyteller, and author of Eating in the Light of the Moon: How Women Can Transform Their Relationships with Food Through Myth, Metaphor, and Storytelling, which has been published in six languages along with numerous book chapters and articles in professional journals.
