Imagine being trapped in an identity that isn't your own, a child grappling with gender confusion, or an adolescent considering transition. This is the reality for many people today, and it's a struggle Kathy Grace Duncan, who once identified as a male, is intimately familiar with. This episode dives into Kathy's journey, from living as a man to rediscovering her identity as a woman, exploring the complexities of gender confusion and the transformation inspired by her encounter with the Holy Spirit.  In this conversation host Helen Todd and Kathy Grace Duncan discuss how the gender issues begin in early adulthood, the impact medical procedures to change gender could have on a person's life, and the effective ways for the church to reach the people struggling with gender identity and sexual orientation. At the end, they spotlight the Portland Fellowship program, a faith-based transitional program dedicated to those wrestling with their gender identity or sexuality. Kathy shares the significance of her five-year journey and how surrendering to God played a pivotal role in her transformation. To connect with the program or with Kathy Grace Duncan, follow the links below:https://www.portlandfellowship.com/kathygrace@changedmovement.comSupport the showThanks for listening! It did. There's no question about it. But it also helped me believe that maybe I can write a book." Then we discuss writing She's Not There with Jennifer Finney Boylan (she/her) nearly 20 years after it was first published. Jenny shared, "Looking at it now, I think there's a little bit of the aroma of apology to the book. There's a certain sense in She's Not There of trying to justify myself." Our conversation with ellie and Jenny range from cathartic writing vs. good storytelling, navigating loss while living authentically, and how trans narratives have changed over the past two decades.Transcripts available at: thisqueerbook.com/podcast/shes-not-thereBuy the LGBT books on this LGBT podcast at our Bookshop: bookshop.org/shop/thisqueerbookPre-order Mad Honey: penguinrandomhouse.com/books/598975/mad-honey-by-jodi-picoult-and-jennifer-finney-boylan/Buy Getting to Ellen: A Memoir about Love, Honesty, and Gender Change: elliekrug.com/publications-columns/Support the show

Ellie is the author of Getting to Ellen: A Memoir about Love, Honesty and Gender Change (2013), was a trial lawyer and has extensive experience providing training on diversity and inclusion. Tamara is an Osseo District School Board member in the suburbs of Minneapolis, and she is a proud mom of children who are a part of the LGBTQ community. This conversation centers on authenticity, and the challenges faced by people discovering and becoming their authentic selves, through the lens of two personal and touching stories. We didn’t talk explicitly about Dąbrowski’s theory in our discussion but instead focused on the lived experience of Ellie and Tamara on their journeys of personal growth and development. Through these stories, we explore acceptance, unconditional love, and compassion—not only for others, but for oneself—in the context of the struggles faced by transgender, nonbinary, and gender non-conforming people. Paria Hassouri is a pediatrician, mother of three, and transgender rights activist. She graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 1999 and completed her residency training at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in 2002. Her personal essays have been published in multiple sites, including the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, and the Huffington Post, and she has presented stories on stage through Expressing Motherhood. A proud Iranian-American, she spent her formative years in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She currently resides and practices in Los Angeles, California. Her memoir, Found in Transition: A Mother's Evolution during her Child's Gender Change, was released in September 2020. In Found in Transition, Hassouri is blindsided when her teenager comes out as transgender. As Hassouri navigates through anger, denial, and grief to eventually arrive at acceptance, her journey forces her to reflect on her own experiences of being an Iranian immigrant growing up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, one of a handful of brown kids in a near all white school district. She examines how the insecurities she is carrying from her past are leading her to parent with fear rather than love. She also questions her identity as both a mother and a pediatrician, given she had no inkling her child is transgender. She examines why her medical training never prepared her for parenting a trans child. As her daughter transitions from male to female, she discovers her own capacity to evolve, what it really means to parent, and how to use her voice to raise awareness about the large percentage of transgender people who don't present in childhood in the classical way the media portrays. While this is a story that weaves the journeys of a pediatrician mother and her transgender teenager, it illustrates universal themes of parenting, identity, belonging, self-discovery, growth, and unconditional love. It is the story of a modern American family. (@pariahassouri) and my instagram(@laparia).

The Numinous Podcast with Carmen Spagnola: Intuition, Spirituality and the Mystery of Life

Today's episode is especially dedicated to all the parents out there of tweens and teens who are exploring their gender identity. Paria Hassouri is a pediatrician, mother of three and writer whose work has appeared in the NY Times, the Los Angeles Times and the Huffington Post.  She and her family live in LA, where she practices pediatrics at Cedars Sinai Medical Center. And she's the author of the book, Found In Transition: A Mother's Evolution during her Child's Gender Change, a very frank, sometimes painfully honest account of parenting a transgender teen. Paria chronicles what amounts to a dual transition: as her child transitions from male to female, she navigates through anger, denial, and grief to eventually arrive at acceptance. Blindsided by her child's gender identity, Paria is also forced to examine how she still carries insecurities from her past of growing up as an Iranian-American immigrant in a predominantly white neighborhood.  Follow Paria: pariahassouri.com Buy the book: Found in Transition: A Mother's Evolution During Her Child's Gender Change Instagram: @laparia Twitter: @pariahassouri Contact Paria Hassouri, M.D., at Cedars Sinai Medical Group

My guest this episode is Victoria resident Ellie Krug.  Ellie is a former trial attorney, book author, public speaker, podcaster, radio show host and transgender woman.  After making the difficult decision to live as her true, authentic self, she had to re-invent herself in almost every aspect of life.  She moved to Minnesota to start over dedicating her life to one of service.  Recent political changes in Iowa made moving back problematic and so Ellie decided to establish roots in Minnesota and she recently moved to Carver County to have a more rural type of surrounding.  Her life is now devoted to sharing her story and life lessons about what she calls "Gray Area Thinking" with service groups, churches, and both large and small corporations.  Her message is one of acceptance of self, compassion for others and for oneself, and that we are all much more alike than different. She believes in the power of human familiarity--that by really getting to know each other on a personal, human to human level, we can be a better community for everyone. To find out more about Ellie's work and or to book her for a speaking engagement, visit- https://elliekrug.com/ Her memoir, Getting to Ellen: A Memoir about Love, Honesty and Gender Change, is available on Amazon, Kindle Nook, and Apple iBook. If your book club reads Ellie's book, she will speak to the club (either in-person or virtually) at no charge. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/greg-anderson29/message

This is what Paria Hassouri experienced when she discovered she had a transgender daughter. Paria Hassouri is an Iranian American mother of three, pediatrician, and transgender rights activist. Paria Hassouri's memoir Found in Transition: A Mother's Evolution During Her Child's Gender Change begins in 2017, when she first learns that her fourteen year old is having gender dysphoria, and concludes in 2018 when her daughter Ava legally changed her name and gender. In this compelling conversation, Paria Hassouri opens up and shares her journey from grieving the vision of the child she always had to becoming an activist for transgender rights. Conversation highlights How Paria's childhood struggle with being bullied for being Iranian American had an impact on her fears for Ava.Why she wrote all the things many parents in her situation also experience and wouldn't dare to say.How Ava's gender dysphoria caused her to question her own identity as a mother. What Dr Paria Hassouri, MD has learned about gender dysphoria and how it is reflected in her pediatric practice. How Ava, Paria and the Hassouri family are doing at the time of recording and a recent update about Ava's exciting future. Memorable quotes from Paria Hassouri “This is a story about a family with a trans kid. But really, it's a story about a family.” “Don't underestimate your power to evolve and change.” “A big part of my evolution during this process was accepting and being proud of who I am as I am. I learned that because I watched my daughter be proud of who she is.” Mentioned in this episode Book - Found in Transition: A Mother's Evolution During Her Child's Gender Change Connect with Paria online Website - pariahassouri.comInstagram - @laparia Connect with Free Your Inner Guru online WebsiteInstagramFacebookJoin our Leadership Community Huddle! Found in Transition, A Mother’s Evolution during her Child’s Gender Change with Paria Hassouri M.D.  On Thanksgiving morning, Paria Hassouri finds herself furiously praying and negotiating with the universe as she irons a dress her fourteen-year-old, designated male at birth, has secretly purchased and wants to wear to dinner with the extended family. In this wonderfully frank, loving, and practical account of parenting a transgender teen, Paria chronicles what amounts to a dual transition: as her child transitions from male to female, she navigates through anger, denial, and grief to eventually arrive at acceptance. Despite her experience advising other parents in her work as a pediatrician, she was blindsided by her child’s gender identity. Paria is also forced to examine how she still carries insecurities from her past of growing up as an Iranian-American immigrant in a predominantly white neighborhood, and how her life experience is causing her to parent with fear instead of love. Paria discovers her capacity to evolve, as well as what it really means to parent and the deepest nature of unconditional love. This page-turning memoir relates a tender story of loving and parenting a teenager coming out as transgender and transitioning. It explores identity, self-discovery in adolescence and midlife, and difference in a world that values conformity. At its heart, Found in Transition is a universally inspiring portrait of what it means to be a family. Paria Hassouri, MD, is the author of Found in Transition. A pediatrician, mother of three, and transgender rights activist, her essays have been published in the New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Huffington Post, and Women’s Running Magazine. There is a lot of new consciousness about transgenderism and it's showing up in broad spectrums of our population. It's definitely not new but the broad openness about it is. Paria Hassouri's son, until he was a teenager, hadn't been clear or conversational about his desire to be a girl. Paria didn't know what to make of his sudden clarity that he had to transition and it was a step by step process to become convinced that she now had a new daughter. Her book "Found in Transition, a Mother's Evolution During Her Child's Gender Change", really examines the understandings of sexual identity and the truths when change is necessary. Paria is an MD Pediatrician and explored this very carefully. There's so much to learn in her book. To help interview Paria, I asked Shelli Joye, a transgender woman and author who's been on my show many times, to help. She brings a lot of her own wisdom into the conversation. I'm so excited to be interviewing Paria Hassouri, the author of "Found in Transition, a Mother's Evolution During Her Child's Gender Change". This is an important topic in today's world as gender change is becoming more recognized. Shelli Joye will be joining me as co-host and brings a lot of expertise into this as she herself transitioned but as a middle aged person. Paria's book helps us understand the deep and committed nature about transitioning and then living with a different gender than birth. It's not new and older societies used to be much more welcoming to transgendered people. Because of its long history and much the public do

Despite her experience advising other parents in her work as a pediatrician, she was blindsided by her child's gender identity. Paria is also forced to examine how she still carries insecurities from her past of growing up as an Iranian-American immigrant in a predominantly white neighborhood, and how her life experience is causing her to parent with fear instead of love. Paria discovers her capacity to evolve, as well as what it really means to parent.

Paria Hassouri, MD, talks about her new book sharing her experience of her transgender child - Found in Transition: A Mother's Evolution During Her Child's Gender Change. The bottom line is acceptance and inclusion. This podcast may open your eyes and adjust your thinking regarding transgender people. Found in Transition begins on May 24, 2017, when Hassouri first learns that her fourteen-year-old,  designated male at birth, is having gender dysphoria and concludes on October 26, 2018, when her now  daughter legally changes her name and gender at the Santa Monica courthouse. During the seventeen  months in-between, Hassouri navigates through anger, denial, and grief before eventually arriving at a  place of acceptance and advocacy.  Hassouri, a pediatrician and the mother of three, chronicles what  amounts to a dual transition: her child’s transition from male to female and her own  evolution as she overcomes deep-seated insecurities about not fitting in as an Iranian  immigrant, while navigating through anger, denial, and grief about her child’s gender  dysphoria, to eventually arrive at a place of acceptance and advocacy.   “While I was always accepting of trans people in principle, it seemed that I was not okay with my own child being trans,” writes Hassouri. “Was that all just because I was shocked and didn’t see it was coming because I thought that Ava was doing it out of depression, a desire for attention, and anxiety about her future, or was there also an underlying thread of prejudice against trans people? I want to think it was all the former,  but I can’t be 100 percent certain.” As her daughter transitions from male to female, Hassouri ultimately discovers her own capacity to evolve, what it truly means to parent; and how to use her voice to raise awareness on behalf of the transgender community.  Gender change is not an easy process for the person going through the change or the family desperately trying to understand the change. Ep. 99 - The Mother's Refuge - A Beacon Series Interview Ft. Paria Hassouri, MD, author of "Found in Transition: A Mothers' Evolution During Her Child's Gender Change " by New World Library ========== It fascinates me how easy it can be to congratulate myself on being open-minded, all-inclusive, and accepting of others. My self-praise doesn’t end there, as I’m always ready, it seems, to easily forgive myself for the secret judgments and grudges that I don’t speak out loud for the world to hear. It’s not very difficult to envision oneself as some type of enlightened being with an expansive and compassionate heart when we’re never presented with information or circumstances that threaten the levees that protect us from all the varieties of human existence that color our world.   This may seem like a strange way to lead you into my conversation with Paria Hassouri, MD, author of Found in Transition: A Mother’s Evolution During Her Child’s Gender Change, but after reading her book and visiting with her, I quickly learned that for all the heart-and-mind work that I claim to do, I still have old mazes to navigate, filled with lingering fears.   Paria’s work is an honest one, a memoir free from the veneer of personal perfection that we’ve grown accustomed to, a type of tailored-for-consumption presentation that I myself am guilty of.   I was watching my mind as I read this work of hers, looking to see what thoughts would arise, almost as if I already knew on some level that I would feel the sting of my own boundaries to accept others for who there are. The truth was that I was afraid to meet the limits of my understanding. What I discovered, in Paria’s book and in our conversation, was that the way to expand my love was to meet those limits and not turn away.   The journey of shock, pain, confusion, acceptance, renewal, and love that Paria and her daughter go through is enlightening. It has not only given me a more nuanced understanding of my expanded human family, but it also provided me the opportunity to feel textures and wounds inside me that I’d never touched before. When we are given the chance to see old wounds, we can lay hands on them to heal.   I am thankful for Paria’s courage and willingness to share her book and time with me.   Now, it’s time to lay old fears aside, seek out our tender hearts, make room for all the varied children of the earth, then tune your attention to this Good News Beacon, and press play on a little good news. ========== SUPPORT FIND THE GOOD NEWS >> https://www.findthegood.news/donate/  ========== MEET PARIA HASSOURI, MD >> https://www.pariahassouri.com/  BUY YOUR COPY OF "FOUND IN TRANSITION" >> https://bookshop.org/books/found-in-transition-a-mother-s-evolution-during-her-child-s-gender-change/9781608687084  EXPLORE NEW WORD LIBRARY >> https://www.newworldlibrary.com/Books.aspx  ========== FIND THE GOOD NEWS IS PRODUCED BY PARKER BRAND CREATIVE SERVICES >> www.ParkerBrandUp.com   ========== SUPPORT CARE-HELP OF SULPHUR >> http://care-help.org/  •••••••••••••

Parenting & Evolving with Your Transgender Child with Paria Hassouri For many parents, accepting a child with a different gender identity that stray from the heteronormative is challenging. You might feel scared and in denial at first, but your love will trump your doubts and fears. The most important thing to do is to be supportive of your child and keep your heart and mind open for them. In this episode, listen to Dr. Paria Hassouri and her daughter’s story of transition. From denial, anger, and grief to reaching acceptance, Paria shares how to see your child’s authentic self. By sharing their journey, she hopes more families and communities will radically love their transgender members. Tune in to learn how you can enrich the way you parent your transgender child. Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode: Be inspired by Dr. Paria’s story of how she embraced being a mother to a daughter who discovered her true self. Learn ways to become a radically loving parent, family member, and community to transgender people, especially children. Find out how and what Pariah radically loves. Resources: Found in Transition: A Mother’s Evolution during Her Child’s Gender Change by Dr. Paria Hassouri Visit Paria’s blog! Episode Highlights Inspiration for the Book Paria felt the need to write a book that would have been the story she needed when her daughter came out in 2017. She felt utterly blindsided when her 13 ½-year-old child came out as transgender. She admits to having made many mistakes but discovered numerous lessons she hopes to share with parents experiencing the same through the book. Changing Beliefs & Letting Go Parents of trans children should come to terms with the fact that they didn’t know something fundamental about their children. They should let go of the power identity struggle within themselves because the bottom line is that it is about their child—not them. Once they let go of the power struggle, their relationship with their child can be better and stronger. Once they allow your children to live their authentic selves, their lives and relationship will be better than they ever were. What Should Parents Do Differently The first thing a parent should do is to pause and listen instead of automatically denying their child. Parents should get into a support group for parents of trans children as soon as possible. Hassouri recommends that a trans child's parent should not underestimate their capacity to evolve with their child. On Parent’s Protective Instincts Paria advises parents to be mindful not to treat their trans children differently. Sometimes, parents project their fears onto their children and link that fear to their child's gender identity. Parents should not assume that every one of their child’s problems is related to their child being transgender. Spreading Transgender Awareness According to Paria, 80% of Americans haven’t encountered a trans person or a family with a trans person. People fear what they don’t know and don’t see, so the transgender community should spread awareness. Families with trans children are no different from any other family. Trans people tend to have negative portrayals in the media. That needs to change, and people need to see trans people as normal, too, not strange or unusual. Is There a Right Age to Come Out? For Paria, it is not the age but about listening to the child. There is no harm in allowing a child to express themselves the way they want. Exploring ways to express their gender is different from being transgender. Parents should take their children’s lead, especially if their children are happy and not in distress. Parents should use the words and expressions a child uses as a guide on how to move forward. How to Support Your Trans Child Listen and be optimistic about them. Live in the present. Parent out of love instead of fear. Being Radically Loved Paria Hassouri feels radically loved when she is genuinely seen and heard. Our special guest is Paria Hassouri, MD, a pediatrician, mother of three, transgender rights activist, and the author of Found in Transition; A Mother's Evolution During Her Child's Gender Change. A gifted writer, she is courageous and honest in her account of her feelings of denial and anger to not just acceptance but embracing her daughter's transition. Despite the fear of maybe 'getting some things wrong,' she was moved to share the truth of their story after hearing other families going through the same experience share theirs. Her essays have been published in The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Huffington Post, and Women’s Running Magazine. In this episode, Lee and Paria discuss how her daughter's journey led Paria to question her own identity as a mother and validity as a pediatrician, which brought plenty of opportunities for reflection and growth. Paria takes us back to Thanksgiving a few years ago, where she finds herself desperately praying and negotiating with the universe as she irons a dress her fourteen-year-old 'then' son, who wants to wear the dress to family dinner. Different Ways of Not Having It All: Work, Care, and Gender Change in the New Economy with Kathleen Gerson

Gender inequality in workplaces and in homes around the globe reflects individual attitudes and abilities, intra-household bargaining and legal and socio-cultural influences. Research that considers factors across the individual, household and cultural levels simultaneously is essentially nonexistent. This paper explores how gender attitudes are shaped by the national context, how these shape intra-household bargaining, and how women’s and men’s lives at work and at home are altered in the process. Just as the industrial revolution prompted a new way of life by separating earning an income from domestic caretaking, the rise of a new economy is again reshaping the ways people organize work and care. The decline of stable jobs, along with the rise of optional and fluid intimate partnerships, has created unpredictable occupational and interpersonal prospects for women and men alike. How are 21st century adults responding to these growing conflicts and uncertainties? What are the implications for gender – and class – inequality? And what are the possibilities for creating more egalitarian options? Drawing on her recent book, “The Children of the Gender Revolution,” as well as early findings from a new study of workers residing in Silicon Valley, Gerson will present a framework for exploring and explaining the changing landscape of gender, work, and care in the new economy. Speaker: Kathleen Gerson, Professor of Sociology, New York University
