You're listening to Find the Good News, Episode 120, “The Permission Slip,” A Beacon Series conversation featuring Regina Louise, author of  Permission Granted: Kick-Ass Strategies to Bootstrap Your Way to Unconditional Self-Love published by New World Library. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Is there something in your life that you feel you should have done, but you just couldn't find it in yourself to get started? Maybe you had an internal and unspoken checklist of reasons that you believed were valid enough to keep your personal passions and dreams in check. You might have thought that you weren't old enough, young enough, wealthy enough, educated enough, attractive enough, supported enough, nurtured enough,... normal enough (whatever that means).   I can absolutely recall the times that my inner critic has clubbed me into submission, even as I sit down to share these words with you. What would happen if you and I stopped casting internal stones and stopped believing the negative stories we tell ourselves, and instead started a plan of self-encouragement that pushed us through the gravel of self-doubt?   In this episode, I visit with Regina Louise, author of the new book "Permission Granted: Kick-Ass Strategies to Bootstrap Your Way to Unconditional Self-Love."   Regina is an energetic light with an attractive vibe that makes you want to latch on to her message. It would be easy to say that she's overcome a lot in her life to get to this plateau where she can help others rise and thrive, but that simply doesn't do her story justice. She instead encourages us to wrap our arms around all the broken and damaged bits that weigh people down (that nasty checklist I mentioned earlier) and instead learn to grow through what we go through.   In a world obsessed with celebrities, Regina uses her very real (and sometimes painful) story to advocate for the voiceless without the clout and fame that so many celebrities enjoy and squander.   She wasn't groomed for success. Instead, Regina found a kind of truth in the bumpiness of her own edges. This allowed her to lay down false images of perfection that so many in our society cling to. In allowing her authentic self to blossom, unplugged from the dream of the mainstream, she now leans into and develops her natural gifts to help others realize the same self-love and personal freedom.   Now, I encourage you to think about those fears and jeers you lay upon yourself, all those unnecessary fictions and frictions you've shackled yourself to, and find out what would happen if you loved yourself just as you are, then tune your attention to this Good News Beacon, and press play on a little good news. ========== SUPPORT FIND THE GOOD NEWS — https://www.findthegood.news/donate/  ========== LEARN MORE ABOUT REGINA LOUISE — https://www.iamreginalouise.com/  BUY A COPY OF "PERMISSION GRANTED" — https://www.amazon.com/Permission-Granted-Strategies-Bootstrap-Unconditional/dp/1608687260/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=  SEE MORE BOOKS FROM NEW WORLD LIBRARY — https://www.newworldlibrary.com/  ========== FIND THE GOOD NEWS IS PRODUCED BY PARKER BRAND CREATIVE SERVICES — www.ParkerBrandUp.com   ==========

Unprocessed trauma and maladaptive coping mechanisms can often leave us operating in survival mode, without us even realizing that we are living in a state of constant fear and anxiety. This week marks the final episode in our series, and we have a truly remarkable guest to bookmark the end of this first chapter. Regina Louise is the best-selling author of several books, including her incredible memoir Somebody's Someone, and Permission Granted: Kick-Ass Strategies to Bootstrap Your Way to Unconditional Self-Love. Her devastating experiences in the foster care system as a child led her to become a children's advocate and shaped her deep knowledge of healing and self-love. Regina speaks about her healing journey with immense wisdom and generously shares the context of her painful upbringing. We delve into the prevalence of imposter syndrome among women of color and ruminate on the role that radical self-love has to play in freeing one's self from the judgment of others. Our conversation also covers the weight of intergenerational trauma, its disproportionate effect on women of color, and what it means to be “adultified” at a disturbingly young age. Join us today for a beautiful conversation on the universality of suffering, the healing journey, and what it means to choose to live life in a sublime state of awareness.Key Points From This Episode:Introducing today's guest Regina Louise. How Regina is choosing to live her life with an elevated sense of awareness. The Hoffman method and other supportive interventions for healing and embodying our higher selves. The prevalence of imposter syndrome among women of color and how learning to love yourself can address it.How the Hoffman method facilitated Wilma May's journey to self-love.Regina's devastating experience of being raised in the same foster home in which her biological mother was trafficked. The disproportionate presence and impact of intergenerational trauma on women of color.A special quote from Anais Nin on taking the risk to bloom and how it manifested in Regina's life.Regina's healing journey and a beautiful and vulnerable description of where she currently places herself. What it means for Regina to depart from living in a constant state of survival. The damaging effects of being “adultified” as a young child. How Wilma Mae challenged her preconceived notions around healing to allow herself access to practitioners who understand suffering. The concept of the wounded healer and why Regina identifies so strongly with it.A reading of the Anais Nin poem that played a pivotal role in Regina's healing. Links Mentioned in Today's Episode:Regina LouiseThe Hoffman InstituteThe Red BookSomebody's SomeoneSomeone Has Led This Child to Believe: A MemoirDRK BEAUTYDRK BEAUTY HealingDRK BEAUTY on InstagramDRK BEAUTY on Facebook

Today, our expert guest is Regina Louise, the author of Permission Granted. Her best-selling memoirs, Somebody's Someone and Someone Has Led This Child to Believe, were made into the award-winning Lifetime movie I Am Somebody's Child: The Regina Louise Story which was nominated for the 2020 NAACP Award for Best Director. A summa cum laude graduate of the California Institute of Integral Studies with a master's degree, Regina is a Hoffman Process teacher, workshop, facilitator, and has been featured in outlets such as NPR's All Things Considered, Good Morning America, The CBS Show, The BBC, and more. Regina managed to survive 30 foster home placements as a child, spending the greater part of her adolescence in solitary confinement. At the time, those experiences were not interpreted as trauma, but, looking back, it's easy to see how traumatic those events were. To her, those traumatic events actually brought out a deep sense of intuition that helped her survive. Regina had to move through the trauma, and she did so through imaginative play. She began to investigate the concept of “home,” the concept of “character,” and whether it was something that could be obtained. She came to recognize that she could create a home wherever she was. When you give yourself permission to go on an inner journey, you give yourself an opportunity to meet yourself. You can step into your license to exist on your own terms. This is what her book, Permission Granted, is all about. One of the techniques she offers to discover self-love is to stand in your dignity. If you can fully accept who you are, and just show up as a spirit having a human experience, you can embrace your worth.   The Biggest Helping: Today's Most Important Takeaway “Wherever you are, love is. The first time I had a book contract, for example, I felt like colleagues and past supervisors were looking over my shoulder, and like I had to clear everything I wanted to say with them in my head before I wrote it. But obviously that's not a great place to write from, and we end up really limiting ourselves when we look to others for permission that isn't theirs to give. So as you'll hear Regina describe, we can liberate ourselves from the false stories we carry about what we're allowed to do and who gets to decide who we are and what we're capable of. I think you'll find her message very uplifting and inspiring.

Before Regina wrote her latest book Permission Granted, she authored two bestselling memoirs: Somebody's Someone and Someone Has Led This Child to Believe in which she shares her journey that included being in thirty foster homes as a child. Her memoirs became the award-winning Lifetime movie I Am Somebody's Child: The Regina Louise Story. Regina joins me to explore topics of the day, including racism, privilege, being a social agent, COVID19, and how writing her 2 memoirs prepared her to write to Permission Granted, her first non-fiction self help book. Conversation Highlights: How Regina learned the value of her own permission when her fighting spirit was seen as troublesome. How women and historically underrepresented folks must give ourselves permission to be bigger than a suppressive society wants us to be.The truth of racism in a constructed, hegemonic society.Moving into the world from the place "where spirit meets bone."Nexting: always imagining the highest order of possibility.Liminal space: feeling moored in the "time in between," and at the threshold where change is afoot.Regina shares her decision to be double vaccinated and wear a mask, despite her prior skepticism based on having pharmaceutical drugs forced on her as a child of the system. Eboni K. Williams talks about the spirit of disruption in this week's episode. Her work disrupts long and deeply seeded cultural norms and expectations. She shares with us how rewarding her work is as disruption is an essential part of change and change is constant. And yet, she also speaks of how heavy her work can be. "...people, we, don't like change and aren't comfortable around disruption." Eboni came to the Process because she, "wanted family more than I was afraid of doing the work that it would take to get there." She shares about her own Process and how her teacher, Regina Louise, was able to help her breakthrough her resistance that showed up at the very first assignment on the first day of her Process. As Hoffman grads, we know change is vital to personal transformation. The Process itself is disruptive. The Process takes us out of our comfort zone and disrupts patterns. It opens us to the pain of our past so we can heal that same pain. Eboni is unapologetically driven to give voice to the voiceless through her platform - a tapestry of television, law, social justice, and entertainment. She knows her presence is power in the rooms where she has often been the first and only Black person. Positioned for disruption, Eboni enters these opportunities representing Black excellence intent on demonstrating and inspiring what is possible for Black people in America. Eboni is the newest and first Black cast member on Bravo's The Real Housewives of New York. She's also excited about her new iHeart Media podcast on the intersection of law and pop culture,  Holding Court with Eboni K. Williams. Uppity Productions, Eboni's production company, produces the podcast. MORE ABOUT EBONI Williams educates and inspires audiences with the lens of a legal scholar. She exposes institutional racism, breaks down controversial issues such as judicial discretion, and expertly analyzes culturally relevant topics. She has served as the Host & Executive Producer of REVOLT Black News, which airs on REVOLT TV founded by Sean "Diddy" Combs. Eboni has also co-hosted REVOLT'S hip hop talk show State of the Culture. Eboni is the best-selling author of her memoir, Pretty Powerful: Appearance, Substance, and Success. She holds a B.A. in Communications and African-American Studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She also holds a J.D. from Loyola University New Orleans College of Law. Eboni clerked for the Louisiana Secretary of State and the Louisiana Attorney General's Office. She later specialized in family law and civil litigation. Eboni then transitioned into practicing as a public defender and a private defense lawyer in North Carolina, and throughout the Greater Los Angeles area. Eboni also serves on the Board of Directors for Safe Horizon, which is the nation's leading victims assistance organization. Find out more about Eboni here. Follow Eboni on Instagram. Regina Louise, a beloved Hoffman teacher, is our guest this week on Love's Everyday Radius. Listen in as Regina shares with us about her time at the Process and how she wanted so badly to leave...but stayed. As a child, Regina lived in over 30 foster homes, group homes, and psychiatric facilities before age 18. She never had the chance to emotionally process the traumas she faced. The Process gave her this opportunity and so much more. One of the most powerful insights Regina shares with us is with regard to hope. She says, "We can’t tell people to have hope. We have to tell people the truth of who they are - to BE hope.” Rather than a passive sense of waiting for good to happen, Regina invites us to BE  hope in the form of real action in the world, being Spirit not just talking about Spirit. Regina speaks about and coaches organizations and individuals on trauma and personal development. She is also a foster care abolitionist and an author. Regina Louise’s real-life story is the subject of the Lifetime movie, I Am Somebody's Child: The Regina Louise Story. She is the author of three books: Somebody's Someone, Someone Has Led This Child to Believe, and her new book to be released June 8th, Permission Granted. Find out more about Regina here. Ashay!    1.  Regina Louise’s memoir, “Someone Has Led This Child to Believe” is a testament to how all of the aforementioned points contributed to a childhood of having no adult support or a loving family to guide her through the harrowing experiences of feeling unwanted by her family and being denied a loving home and adoption by the ONE person who showed her love because of race, and having to navigate the isolating and dehumanizing effects of that separation.   We close with a conversation with Donte Clark, poet, actor, playwright, educator, activist. “Spirit, tell me what I need to know.”   These are the words that Regina Louise has used throughout her life to guide her to know when it was time for her to make a move — including moments when she had to fight for her life in order to make that move.   By sixteen-years-old Regina, lived in — and failed to adjust to — thirty foster homes, group homes and psychiatric facilities and survived harsh abuse. Emancipated from the system at age 18, she had to find her own way, and was committed to one day graduate from college despite all of the school she missed and to one day share her story. At 48 years-old, Regina Louise walked across the stage Magna Cum Laude from California Institute of Integral Studies, and two weeks later, she was chosen as a Dean’s Distinguished Fellow at University of California, Riverside as a graduate student. And today, she is author of the celebrated memoir Somebody’s Someone, which has been adaptedLifetime Television Network and is scheduled to air in late 2019.     On this throwback episode of the Support is Sexy podcast -- which originally aired January 2, 2019, Regina shares why it’s important to take your dreams to bed with you, to trust where spirit guides you and to pay attention to your intuition. Regina Louise never knew a “normal” childhood. Throughout her tumultuous youth, she was shuffled through more than 30 foster homes and psychiatric facilities, all before the age of 18. Compounding the trauma, a racially motivated ruling in 1974 prevented Regina's counselor from being able to adopt her. And yet… After aging out of the foster care system, Regina pursued her dream of higher education, built a thriving hair salon business, and became a successful author, motivational speaker, and advocate for foster youth. Following nearly 30 years of separation, Regina reunited with her counselor and was adopted as an adult in the same courthouse where the pair lost the previous legal battle. For more than 16 years now, Regina has traveled the country telling her story to bring awareness to the systemic failures that continue to affect foster youth today. In April 2019, a film based on Regina's memoirs premiered on Lifetime alongside PSAs about adoption and foster care, giving voice to the more than 400,000 children currently in the U.S. foster care system. Join us for this moving conversation with Regina Louise about taking control of your own story no matter the circumstances and using your voice to become your own hope.
