He and his wife Betty are joined by Steve Wiese, a former Marine Corporal who is also a veteran of Khe Sanh and lives in California. Both Rodgers and Wiese were members of Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 26th Marine Regiment, which fought at Khe Sanh in what would become the longest siege of the Vietnam War, and which would end in a stalemate. In the film Bravo!, Rodgers, Wiese and 13 other former Marines describe their experiences in combat and how those experiences have continued to affect their lives. We call upon all former Navy SeaBees to join us for a conversation marking the 83rd anniversary of the founding of the U.S. Navy's Construction Battalions on March 5, 1942. Formed in response to the urgent need for military construction forces capable of working under combat conditions, the Seabees have since established themselves as an indispensable part of U.S. military operations. Before World War II, the Navy relied on civilian contractors to build bases and infrastructure. However, after the attack on Pearl Harbor and the U.S. entry into the war, it became clear that construction crews needed to be able to defend themselves. The solution was the formation of Naval Construction Battalions—skilled builders trained as combatants. The name “Seabees” comes from the phonetic pronunciation of the initials “CB.” Seabees undergo rigorous training that combines construction expertise with military readiness. Initial training takes place at the Naval Construction Training Center in Gulfport, Mississippi, and Port Hueneme, California. Recruits learn essential skills like carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, heavy equipment operation, and demolition. In addition, they receive weapons training and instruction in defensive tactics, ensuring they can operate in hostile environments. Their motto, “We Build, We Fight,” reflects their dual purpose. During World War II, Seabees were deployed to the Pacific and European theaters, constructing airstrips, roads, bridges, and bases under combat conditions. They played a key role in the island-hopping campaigns of the Pacific, building the infrastructure necessary for advancing U.S. forces. In the Battle of Guadalcanal, Seabees constructed Henderson Field, a crucial airstrip that enabled the Allies to gain air superiority. At Iwo Jima, they worked under constant enemy fire, repairing airfields to keep American planes in the fight. By the war's end, Seabees had built over 400 advanced bases and countless facilities that proved essential to victory. When the Korean War erupted in 1950, the Seabees were once again called upon to provide critical construction support. They built airstrips, roads, and supply depots in challenging environments. One of their most notable achievements was the rapid construction of an airfield at Wonsan, which played a key role in supporting Marine and Army operations. Seabees also repaired and maintained infrastructure in war-torn areas, showcasing their ability to work in extreme conditions. In Vietnam, the Seabees operated extensively, constructing bases, airstrips, hospitals, and roads while also engaging in civic action projects. They built schools, hospitals, and bridges to help local communities, winning the support of Vietnamese civilians. One of their most daring projects was the construction of Khe Sanh Combat Base, a strategic stronghold. Seabees worked under enemy fire to complete the base, enabling U.S. forces to hold their ground during the pivotal siege of Khe Sanh in 1968. Since Vietnam, Seabees have continued to play a crucial role in military and humanitarian missions worldwide. They built infrastructure in the Persian Gulf during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, repaired damage from hurricanes and natural disasters, and provided disaster relief in Haiti and the Philippines. In Iraq and Afghanistan, Seabees built forward operating bases, roads, and medical facilities, ensuring U.S. and allied forces had the support they needed. Send us a message, so we know what you're thinking!Every band/artist has to have a first album.  Sometimes those albums are good, sometimes they're not, and sometimes they just show potential.  This episode, we look at some first albums over the gamut of the rock era that we regard as great, including some Australian albums. You've probably heard of most, but not all. In rock news, we look at Neil Young, The Wiggles (yes!), Joe Bonamassa, Jethro Tull and Billboard's new list – The Top 200 Albums of the 21st Century.  Our Album You Must Hear before You Die is Paris 1919 by John Cale. Mick regards this elegant 1973 album from the Velvet Underground co-founder as a stunning listen, and a great intro to John Cale.  Chris Thomas' production is, as usual, precise, while Cale presents some wonderful imagery in the lyrics.   References:  John Cale, Paris 1919, “A Child's Christmas in Wales”, Fragments of a Rainy Season, Brian Wilson, UCLA Symphony Orchestra, Words for the Dying, Dylan Thomas, Chris Thomas, Roxy Music, Eno, Sex Pistols, Pretenders, INXS, Bowie, Lou Reed, Queen, The Police, Outlandos d'Amour, “Can't Stand Losing You”, “Roxanne”, Stewart Copeland, Sting, Rod Stewart, The Tubes, “White Punks on Dope”, “What do you want from life?”, “a baby's arm holding an apple”, Kate Bush, The Kick Inside, David Gilmour, “Wuthering Heights”, Wuthering Heights Day, Roxy Music, Kari-Ann Moller, Chris Jagger, Andy Mackay, saxophone, “Re-make / Re-model", Bryan Ferry, Steely Dan, Can't Buy a Thrill, Jeff (Skunk) Baxter, “Do it Again”, “Reelin' in the Years”, “Only a fool would say that”, John Lennon, Imagine, Robert Dimery, 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, Peter Gabriel, The Cure, Three Imaginary Boys, Boys Don't Cry, "10:15 Saturday Night", Robert Smith, Television, Marquee Moon, Devo, Q: Are We Not Men? How COLD CHISEL and Don Walker Shaped Australian Rock Music History

A Breath of Fresh Air

Wondering what ever happened to Don Walker and Cold Chisel? Or maybe what songs Don wrote for the band and what his solo stuff is like? Check this out ... Don Walker, hailed as one of Australia's finest songwriters, has built an enduring legacy through his work with Cold Chisel, his solo career, and his literary pursuits. Born in Ayr, Queensland, in 1951, Don spent his formative years on a sugarcane farm, an environment that shaped his deep appreciation for storytelling and the Australian landscape. Despite excelling academically and earning a physics degree from the University of Queensland, music remained his true calling. He began writing songs in his teenage years, influenced by country, blues, and the emerging rock 'n' roll sounds of the 1960s. In 1973, while living in Adelaide, Don co-founded Cold Chisel with Ian Moss, Phil Small, Steve Prestwich, and Jimmy Barnes. As the band's principal songwriter and keyboardist, Don crafted songs that resonated with the Australian experience, blending gritty realism with poetic lyricism. Cold Chisel's music, powered by Don's writing, captured the struggles, triumphs, and heartbreaks of ordinary lives. Tracks like Khe Sanh, a tale of a Vietnam veteran's post-war alienation, and Flame Trees, a nostalgic reflection on love and small-town life, became Australian anthems. Cold Chisel rose to prominence in the late '70s and early '80s, releasing landmark albums such as East and Circus Animals. Don's songwriting was praised for its depth and sophistication, setting the band apart in the Australian rock scene. Despite their massive success, internal tensions led to the band's breakup in 1983. Their farewell concert, The Last Stand, cemented their place in Australian music history. After Cold Chisel's breakup, Don turned his focus to solo projects. He formed the Catfish, releasing the album Unlimited Address in 89, which showcased his ability to blend rock, blues, and jazz influences. He later pursued a solo career under his own name, releasing We're All Gunna Die (1995), Cutting Back (2006), and Hully Gully (2013). These albums highlighted his distinctive narrative voice and ability to explore the darker corners of human experience with wit and insight. Beyond music, Don ventured into literature, publishing Shots in 2009, a memoir that offered a vivid and unflinching look at his life and career. The book was praised for its raw honesty and lyrical prose, further cementing his reputation as a master storyteller. Cold Chisel reunited several times, releasing new music and touring to the delight of their loyal fan base. Don's role in the band remained central, as he continued to pen songs that connected with audiences across generations. His collaborations with other artists, including Slim Dusty, Troy Cassar-Daley, and Tex Perkins, underscored his influence on Australian music. Don Walker's career spans decades of creative output, from iconic anthems to introspective solo works and literary achievements. His ability to capture the essence of Australian life through his art has made him a cultural icon and a revered figure in the nation's musical and storytelling traditions. Don joins us this week to share his incredible story. If you have a comment, query or suggestion for a future guest, please get in touch with me through my website I hope you enjoy this episode!

For the next 77 days, U.S. Marines and their South Vietnamese allies fought off an intense siege of the garrison, one of the longest and bloodiest battles of the Vietnam War. As music lovers, we've all had a soundtrack to our lives....it's provided to us by the radio. Maybe at this point in the 21st century, that's less of a given. Was it the internet that killed the radio star? Who can truly say, but for most of the rock era, radio has provided songs that millions of music fans would discover, sing along to, discuss with their friends, learn to play on their instrument of choice, get amorous to, get stoned to, or cherish for some personal reason. Welcome to episode 179 of Love That Album. It's been said that in the early days of rock and roll, tyranny of distance made Australian music tougher than its Northern Hemisphere counterparts. Henry Silva might have asked, “Bullshit Or Not?” What is for certain is that Australian rock musicians could often become huge in their home country, but not raise an eyebrow anywhere else (the reverse is also true, but that's a story for another episode). Author Glen Humphries has just published a terrific book called “Aussie Rock Anthems: The Stories Behind Our Biggest Hit Songs". He writes 40 essays about popular songs from the 1960s through to the first decade of the 21st century. These essays tell stories about songs that many Australians grew up with. Some became popular outside our borders, some didn't. These songs show a huge diversity – where else will you get Shadap You Face occupying the same tome as Khe Sanh? At some stage or another, these songs all meant something to the wider Australian populus, and Glen weaves fascinating tales that cover politics, sporting pride, cultural cringe, and musical invention. I was rapt to have someone to discuss these songs with me. Neither of us were fans of every one of the songs covered in the book, and inevitably, people will argue about what was left out. What's important is that these songs all have interesting backstories and are worthy of being celebrated. Tune into find which songs Glen and I absolutely detest...and those we love. “I wound up volunteering to go up to Khe Sanh. I didn't have any idea what I was going to encounter,” says retired Lt. Col. Allen Davies MD, recalling how he ended up in one of the most intense battle zones of the Vietnam War. “There were about four Quad 50s [anti-aircraft guns] in my eyesight that were firing. Also, artillery and mortars going off. … The war was really going on. But we had 40 guys that needed to be taken care of,” he says, referring to the wounded Marines he would render life-saving care to. Those four days of surgery under fire in Khe Sanh provide just one snapshot of a surgeon's courageous and perilous struggle to save life amid unrelenting bloodshed, spanning two tours in Vietnam. Lt. Col. Davies joins Vital Signs with Brendon Fallon to recount the life-and-death episodes of that time, including the baptism of fire that was his arrival at 2nd Surgical Hospital, Chu Lai, where he was immediately presented with a young female patient rapidly losing blood through a chest wound. How did the behind-the-scenes medical heroes of the Vietnam War operate to bring soldiers and civilians alike back from the brink of death? And how did Lt. Col. Davies resist the trauma of that experience to practice his surgical talent at its highest level, moving from the battlefields of Vietnam to the emergency room of Wilmington General, Delaware—his first position as a civilian surgeon after the war? ⭕️ Watch in-depth videos based on Truth & Tradition at Epoch TV

WEAPONIZING THE WEATHER Prior to the Environmental Modification Convention signed in Geneva in 1977, the United States used weather warfare in the Vietnam War. Operation Popeye saw the use of cloud seeding over the Ho Chi Minh trail. It was hoped that the increased rainfall would reduce the rate of infiltration down the trail. A research paper produced for the United States Air Force written in 1996 speculates about the future use of nanotechnology to produce "artificial weather", clouds of microscopic computer particles all communicating with each other to form an "intelligent fog" that could be used for various purposes. "Artificial weather technologies do not currently exist. But as they are developed, the importance of their potential applications rises rapidly." The Convention on the Prohibition of Military or Any Other Hostile Use of Environmental Modification Techniques (Geneva: May 18, 1977, Entered into force: October 5, 1978) prohibits "widespread, long-lasting or severe effects as the means of destruction, damage or injury". In 1972 an ENMOD convention on weather warfare presented that this permits "local, non-permanent changes". The "Consultative Committee of Experts" established in Article VIII of the Convention stated in their "Understanding relating to Article II" that any use of environmental modification where this is done "as a means of destruction, damage or injury to another State Party, would be prohibited.".[3] It also suggests all signatories are expected to abstain from using weather modification to cause harm at any scale, stating "military or any other hostile use of environmental modification techniques, would result, or could reasonably be expected to result, in widespread, long-lasting or severe destruction, damage or injury." However, the treaty does not directly condemn military use of weather modification when it does not directly cause harm,[3] such as the United States' use of weather modification in the siege of Khe Sanh, discussed above. The limitations of the treaty, and its application only to signatory states, allow weather warfare to continue to play a role in warfare throughout the twenty-first century. The United States prohibits weather modification without permission of the United States Secretary of Commerce.

Marcia Franklin talks with Ken and Betty Rodgers, residents of Eagle, ID, who have produced a documentary called "Bravo! Common Men, Uncommon Valor," about the 1968 siege of Khe Sanh in Vietnam. Ken Rodgers is a former Marine Lance Corporal and a veteran of Khe Sanh. Franklin asks the Rodgers' about why they wanted to produce the documentary and what they hope viewers will learn from it. Franklin also talks with Wiese about his experiences at Khe Sanh, and what has helped him overcome the traumas he experienced. Originally aired: 11/08/2013

The Demilitarized Zone, or DMZ, was created between North Vietnam and SouthVietnam in 1954. The DMZ was supposed to be a temporary buffer zone thatwould keep previously hostile forces away from each other. When the plannedunification of North Vietnam and South Vietnam stalled out, the DMZ stayed onwith an air of permanence. It was four to six miles wide and ran about 47 milesfrom the coast to the border with Laos. Don't believe the label though. The DMZwas anything but demilitarized. It's here in the DMZ that 3rd Battalion, 26thMarines got into the fight for its life in September 1967. In four days 3/26 lost 56killed and 290 wounded.

It's St Valentine's Day, and a chance for Jeff to show his sensitive side!  Other than cars and protest songs, rock'n'roll is ALL ABOUT love songs! We talk about love songs, songs about sex, songs mourning lost love, break-up songs, songs that aren't really about love at all, and look at a couple of massive hits that are best considered rubbish. Our Album You Must Hear Before You Die is one of the greats - “Born in the USA”, Bruce Springsteen's 7th album. The title track alone, regularly cited by right wing politicians in the US as an example of American superiority, is in fact one of the most biting comments on the way the USA uses then discards people.  The boys also have another look at NFTs with the help of Formula 1 driver, Max Verstappen. Looking at investing? You'll feel much more confident with the help of Jeff and the ever-surprising Max.  References:  Clive Palmer, “We're Not Gonna Take It”, Twisted Sister, “Khe Sanh”, Cold Chisel, “Dancing in the Dark”, Blinded by the Light, Annie Leibovitz, Bruce Springsteen “Live:  1975-1985", Globite School Bag, “My Boyfriend's Back”, Queen, “Crazy Little Thing Called Love”, Elvis Presley, "Can't Help Falling in Love", “Love Me Tender”, Claudia Jung, “Was Kann Mein Herz Dafur”, Jackie Wilson, "(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher", Crowded House, Neil Finn, “It's only natural”, “I Hope I Never”, Olivia Newton-John, “I Honestly Love You”, Unit 4 + 2, “Concrete and Clay”, Martin Plaza, The Beatles, “I Want to Hold Your Hand”, “All you need is love”, “Here, There and Everywhere”, Paul McCartney, “Maybe I'm Amazed”, “My Love”, John Lennon, “Oh Yoko”, “Jealous Guy”, George Harrison,  “Something”, 10cc, “I'm Not in Love”, Graham Gouldman, “The Things We Do for Love”, Carpenters, “Close to you”, Nick Cave, “Into Your Arms”, Bob Dylan, “If Not for You”, Buzzcocks, “Ever Fallen in Love”, David Bowie, “‘Heroes”, Troggs, “Love is all around me”, Warren Zevon, “Empty-Handed Heart”, ” Reconsider me”, U2, “With or Without You”, The Hugo & Luigi Chorus, The Rolling Stones, “Wild Horses”, Badfinger, “Without You”, Prince, Sinead O'Connor, “Nothing Compares 2 U”, Gotye, “Just somebody That I used to Know”, ABBA, “Knowing Me, Knowing You”, “Mamma Mia”, Taylor Swift, Linda Ronstadt, “You're No Good”, REM, “The One I Love”, The Police, “Roxanne”, Dolly Parton, “I Will Always Love You”, Tina Turner, “What's love got to do with it?”, Tom Jones, “Delilah” Love Songs PlaylistSomebody that I Used to Know Video GotyeWalk off the Earth Beatle MedleyWalk off the Earth Gotye

South Australian-born musician DAVID BLIGHT is without a doubt one of Australia's premier harmonica players. There aren't too many people in Australia who are not familiar with the harmonica playing of David Blight. Every time you hear that favorite of Australia's rock anthems, KHE SANH by Cold Chisel you will hear David's distinctive harp lines weaving in and out behind Jimmy Barnes' vocals. He was and still is Cold Chisels harp player of choice and has recorded and toured with the band collectively and individually throughout the years. During this interview, David shares his musical journey from listening to the radio and hearing "Bring it on Home" from a freshly released Led Zeppelin 2 when the light was well and truly switched on, to playing whenever he could with local bands, to how working at John Martins led David Blight to become Cold Chisel's harmonica player. David formed his own band The Flyers in 1982 and has continued his connection, recording with Cold Chisel and band members Don Walker and Ian Moss. Mick Kidd together with Dave Blight won the Adelaide Roots & Blues Associations inaugural "Memphis Blues Challenge" (solo/duo) in 2015 and were sent to represent Australia in the 2016 International Blues Challenge in Memphis USA – This was following up on their success at the 2014 South Australia Blues Awards winning the "Outstanding Solo/Duo." On 17th November 2015, a small group from the Adelaide Music Collective/ SA Music Hall Of Fame attended Cold Chisel's soundcheck to surprise Dave Blight with an induction. He had previously declined an induction as he felt he was not worthy. After many more nominations and public outpouring, it was decided that he would be inducted in collaboration with Cold Chisel. Music: intro "BAND IT ABOUT" theme song, written and recorded by Catherine Lambert and Michael Bryant. Intelligence, Terrorism and National Security - Lieutenant Colonel BILL COWAN is a retired Marine Corps officer and has been a public speaker and Fox News Channel contributor on matters of national security and terrorism for the past 12 years. During the height of the Iraq War he was designated by the New York Post as the best military analyst on television. A Naval Academy graduate, he served 3 1/2 years on combat assignments in Vietnam as a Marine Corps infantry officer. A platoon commander during the siege of Khe Sanh, he subsequently spent an additional 2 1/2 years as an infantry advisor in the Rung Sat Special Zone. Decorated many times for heroism, he was also awarded three purple hearts for wounds received. Following the taking of hostages in Iran in 1978 and the formation of special mission units (SMU's) to conduct operations of a sensitive, highly skilled nature, he turned down a plum White House assignment to instead become one of the early members of the Pentagon's super secret Intelligence Support Activity (ISA). While there he was a key member of the team that hunted down those responsible for the bombing of the U.S. Marine Compound in Beirut. Working directly with CIA Chief of Station William Buckley, Cowan and the team identified many of the targets and developed a plan for retaliation. Regrettably, the Pentagon refused to take action. Buckley, who was taken hostage by Hezbollah and brutally tortured, died in captivity. Bin-Laden himself termed the U.S. a 'paper tiger' for failing to respond to the bombing or to Buckley's murder. In addition to a 30 year career of special missions and activities in support of the Pentagon and the CIA, most of them into the tumultuous Middle East, Bill's experiences include service as a U.S. Senate staff assistant to Senator Warren Rudman, including working as the Senator's principal staffer during the Iran/Contra hearings and helping write the law which created the U.S. Special Operations Command in Tampa; a clandestine rescue operation conducted with former CIA Director William Colby which resulted in the repatriation of a number of Americans stranded in Iraqi-occupied Kuwait; and, successful negotiations with the Iranians at the behest of the White House to secure the release of Western hostages being held in Beirut. Well known to Hezbollah, the Syrians, and the Iranians for his work against them, he is one who can speak with authority on matters of interest to many Americans. In 1995, while being interviewed by 60 Minutes' Mike Wallace in front of the destroyed U.S. Embassy in Beirut Bill opined that it was just a matter of time before we saw a similar incident in the U.S. Ironically he was less than a half mile from the Pentagon on September 11, 2001, as he watched American Airlines Flight 77 cross in front of him and hit the Pentagon. He was subsequently one of Wallace's first guests on 60 Minutes following the tragic events of 9/11. Known for telling it like it is, he's angered Republican and Democratic administrations alike with his no-nonsense approach, always basing his analysis and opinions of years of 'hands on' experience, not on academic or policy minded jargon. - www.colonelcowan.comFor Your Listening Pleasure for these Lockdown / Stay-At-Home COVID and Variants Times - For all the radio shows available on The 'X' Zone Broadcast Network visit - https://www.spreaker.com/user/xzoneradiotv.Our radio shows archives and programming include: A Different Perspective with Kevin Randle; Alien Cosmic Expo Lecture Series; Alien Worlds Radio Show; America's Soul Doctor with Ken Unger; Back in Control Radio Show with Dr. David Hanscom, MD; Connecting with Coincidence with Dr. Bernard Beitman, MD; Dick Tracy; Dimension X; Exploring Tomorrow Radio Show; Flash Gordon; Imagine More Success Radio Show with Syndee Hendricks and Thomas Hydes; Jet Jungle Radio Show; Journey Into Space; Know the Name with Sharon Lynn Wyeth; Lux Radio Theatre - Classic Old Time Radio; Mission Evolution with Gwilda Wiyaka; Paranormal StakeOut with Larry Lawson; Ray Bradbury - Tales Of The Bizarre; Sci Fi Radio Show; Seek Reality with Roberta Grimes; Space Patrol; Stairway to Heaven with Gwilda Wiyaka; The 'X' Zone Radio Show with Rob McConnell; Two Good To Be True with Justina Marsh and Peter Marsh; and many other! That's The ‘X' Zone Broadcast Network Shows and Archives - https://www.spreaker.com/user/xzoneradiotv

Scot and Jeff discuss the second part of Bruce Springsteen's career (1980-2020) with Dan McLaughlin. Introducing the Band: Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) with guest Dan McLaughlin. Dan is a Senior Editor at National Review and you can find his work, well . . . here! Just click on that tab over there, it's not hard to figure out! Find him online at @baseballcrank on Twitter. Dan's Music Pick: Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band Maybe you had a brother in Khe Sanh fighting off the Viet Cong, but after forty years from 1980 onwards to the present day as we resume the second part of our Springsteen summer spectacular, Bruce is still there, and we're all gone. Part Two witnesses Springsteen's explosion from cult favorite, critical darling, and sometime-chart-entrant into The Biggest Musician Of The Eighties sweepstakes (it's a four person standoff between him, MJ, Prince, and Madonna). From Nebraska to Born In The U.S.A. to Live 1975-85 (a five record set that entered the Billboard charts at #1) to the deeply personal Tunnel Of Love, Springsteen owned the decade like few other artists, and his retreat from that during the Nineties (and subsequent reclamation of both the E Street Band and the massive concert audiences from 1999 onwards) is only part of an incredibly complicated and rewarding story set out in musical form. Join us as we run through all of it — not just the albums, but the outtakes, the live performances, the archival releases, heck even the autobiographies — on this epic installment of Political Beats, bringing our survey of The Boss to a close. And after you're done, assuming you're the last one out, make sure to shut out the light. Part Two of Two.

The new showrunner of Arrow revealed that the title of the Season 7 premiere is “Inmate 4587,” hinting that life behind bars will certainly not be easy for Oliver Queen. Oliver's inmate number, 4587 is an Easter egg in and of itself, considering that it was the agent number of Vinnie Terranova, the main character of the classic television series Wiseguy. But on top of that, this also isn't the first time these numbers have appeared in the Arrowverse. Most notably, it was the number of a warehouse in the Legends of Tomorrow episode “Star City 2046,” an episode that presented viewers with a very dark future for Green Arrow's beloved city. https://www.cbr.com/arrow-season-7-premiere-title/   GENERAL DC NEWS:   Legends of Tomorrow's Season 4 Threat Revealed (Date: 25 June 2018) According to Warner Bros.
