This episode features Dr. Miray Seward, a researcher and consultant who developed her love for wine while living in Charlottesville, Virginia. She holds a PhD in Educational Psychology: Applied Developmental Science from the University of Virginia with more than ten years of experience conducting mixed-methods research and evaluation. Currently, she works as a Research Scientist at an applied research firm where she leads research and evaluation projects focused on supporting youth development, but while completing her doctorate degree in Charlottesville, she spent many weekends visiting local wineries, primarily in the Monticello and Shenandoah Valley AVAs. We talk about how she was drawn to and motivated to learn more about wine because of the warm, open, and welcoming Virginia wine community. She later began her formal entry into wine by joining the Roots Fund, which provided her with a scholarship to pursue her WSET level 1. Since then, she has taken and passed her WSET levels 1 and 2 with distinction, hosted the Oenoverse wine club, served as a curator for the Two Up Wine Down festival, and more! Most recently, Miray joined the leadership team for the Veraison Project, where she serves as the Director of Data and Insights. This role allows her to bring together her expertise and passion for research and wine. Through this role, she aims to help ensure the organization systematically collects meaningful data about its programs and events. Miray is also available to provide consulting support to wine organizations, brands, and companies needing research or coaching support. October is Virginia Wine month, so it was an honor to have her on the show and hear how the Virginia wine industry continues to inspire her wine journey and foster community. On this episode of Obsessed with Wine, our host Wesley S Cable Sr is joined by special guest Luke Trainum, a passionate winemaker. Luke shares his journey in winemaking and discusses the process behind creating his wines.Luke's biggest passion project is Cab Franc, which he grows on two properties spanning a total of 16 acres. The vineyard sites and harvested fruit play a crucial role in determining the style of the wine. Luke employs various techniques, such as a cold soak on the fruit and gentle destemming with a delicate distemmer called Mccube, to ensure the grapes remain delicate throughout the winemaking process.Fermentation and maceration on the skins last about a month, with a gradual increase in temperature. Luke utilizes a combination of punch downs and pump overs during fermentation. The aging process takes place in predominantly neutral French oak punches, resulting in a unique flavor profile.Luke also discusses a popular wine that was initially released in 2019 as a wine club exclusive but is now available to everyone. He emphasizes the purpose of holding back wines to assess how they age, rather than increasing their price upon re-release. The 2019 vintage has now entered a new stage with more structure and softened tannins, and there is high demand for it.In addition to winemaking, Luke sheds light on the challenges of producing Pinot Noir in Virginia and the smaller scale of wineries compared to California. He explores the different wine regions in Virginia, including the Shenandoah Valley with its unique terroir and Central Virginia where Monticello is located. Luke mentions the next generation of winemakers focusing on hillside vineyard sites in the mountains. Not only is Luke dedicated to winemaking, but he also raises heritage breed pigs and distributes the meat to restaurants. He shares his background growing up on a farm and how his family's traditional values shaped his journey into winemaking. Luke's experiences working in restaurants and a winery in California further fueled his passion for the craft.Throughout the episode, Luke delves into the winemaking process, discussing topics such as filtering, bottling, different barrel types, and the importance of stability in white wines. He emphasizes the sensitivity and potential mistakes in the winemaking process while emphasizing the importance of learning from past industry mistakes.Luke's vineyard in a cold area presents unique challenges, leading him to focus on Austrian German varieties, cold-hardy French grapes, and classic Bordeaux varietals. He provides insights into the specific grape varieties grown and their suitability for his climate.Join us on this engaging episode of Obsessed with Wine as we delve into Luke Trainum's fascinating journey in winemaking and explore the intricacies of crafting exceptional wines.Follow us on Social Media: https://www.instagram.com/obsessedwithwine/ https://www.facebook.com/obsessedwithwine https://twitter.com/obsessedwine For more wine content go to obsessedwithwine.com Listen to past episodes of the podcast here: Listen on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/podcast/id1610813329https://podcasts.apple.com/podcast/id1610813329 Listen on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6GUNTZsivMlyTySnSbDwfT?si=3c1df2968aba4338 Email the show @ obsessedwithwine@yahoo.com #obsessedwithwine #winepodcast #winelovers #winetasting #winetrends #winestories #winerylife #winetime #winenews #wineeducation #wineculture #winemakers #wineindustry #wineinfluencers #podcastannouncement #season2 #newepisodes #uncorked #cheers

What was it that originally piqued your interest in the history of Virginia wines? I began working at Chrysalis Vineyards in Middleburg VA in 2005. This area, like most of VA, is rich with American history and wine!As a member of the DAR, I am especially interested in 18th century history around the formation of our country. Wine, craft beer and spirits were all a part of this. Based on your research, where was the first winery established in Virginia? This is somewhat of a debated topic. However, my research points to what is now known as Phillip Carter in Hume, VA.What are some surprising facts about Virginia wine that you have learned? Our Virginia soil has a louse called phylloxera. This almost destroyed the wine industry as we know it today in France. As a result, almost all European wine “root” stock is American. (You have to Google this one. It is quite a story!) Can you accommodate groups, and how far in advance must reservations be made?Yes absolutely! Right now with the Governor’s COVID-19 related restrictions, we are at groups of 10 inside and 25 outside. Hopefully this will change by April 2021. Reservations are encouraged at least a month in advance for private tours. Our public tours generally are available for purchase until the day before the event unless sold out.The Walton’s Mountain and Haunted Wine Trail tours tend to sell out months in advance. Therefore, we encourage folks to purchase those tickets NOW! Can you do custom tours for larger groups?Absolutely! We can accommodate larger groups once the restrictions are lifted. What have customers told you is their favorite thing about your tours? Most guests enjoy the variety of wines, delicious food, the little known historical facts and the beautiful scenery along the way!For More Informations:fruitsandrootswinetours.comFacebook: fruitsandrootswinetoursInstagram: fruitsandrootswinetoursWant to see the Fruits and Roots tour in action? Rebekah Greenhill is the director of sales and marketing at Greenhill Winery & Vineyards in Middleburg, Virginia. She and her husband, David Greenhill, also own and operate Middleburg Life magazine and Greenhill Stables. They are based in Middleburg during the summer and Wellington, Florida in the winter for the equestrian and polo season. In this episode of Destination on the Left, Rebekah Greenhill, the director of sales and marketing at Greenhill Winery & Vineyards, shares Greenhill’s story. She explains what brought national and international recognition to this Virginia farm winery. And she talks about some of the strategic partnerships that helped them expand into new markets. What You Will Learn in This Episode: How Greenhill Winery & Vineyards shares the Virginia farm life with their guests The different types of strategic partnerships Greenhill formed to grow their business How Greenhill built an entirely unique experience for its visitors What Greenhill is doing to stand out from the crowd The types of visitors that Greenhill is targeting and how they target them How Rebekah has used creativity to solve unique marketing challenges in the wine industry How Greenhill is working with the local community to build its brand Greenhill Winery & Vineyards Last year we had the pleasure of doing an episode with Beth Erickson, the president and CEO of the Loudon Convention & Visitors Association. Loudon County has become the premier region of East Coast wine and Beth provided us with a glimpse into the development of Virginia’s wine industry. So, to learn even more about the growth of Virginia’s wine scene, we invited Rebekah Greenhill, the director of sales and marketing at Greenhill Winery & Vineyards, to join us next. In the latest episode of the Destination on the Left podcast, Rebekah explains how Greenhill designed a unique visitor experience and how they formed strategic partnerships to grow their business. 100% Virginian Wine The Virginia climate poses major challenges for winemakers in the area because the weather is erratic and the soil is not always perfect. So, one of the ways that Greenhill Winery & Vineyards stands out from the crowd is by embracing those challenges and showcasing the unique flavor profiles that they create. Greenhill uses 100% Virginia grapes while other local wineries outsource them, so it makes Greenhill more consistent, but it also captures the essence of Virginia’s unique soil and climate. The 100% Virginian wines have received national and international recognition with characteristics that you won’t find anywhere else in the world. Build a Unique Visitor Experience Another way that Greenhill Winery & Vineyards has cut through the noise and built their brand is by showcasing their identity as a privately-owned farm winery. Greenhill has truly embraced the farm life and it has been woven into the visitor experience as a whole. Guests get to witness the whole operation, not just the tasting room, and they have cows, honey bees, horses, and much more. Greenhill is inviting its visitors to join this lifestyle and be apart of a unique experience that very few wineries can offer. Virginia is often heralded as the birthplace of American wine. But from colonial times through efforts made by Thomas Jefferson, those efforts were seen as a failure. The archetypical image of wine country—arid, rocky places—is not what one thinks of when conjuring images of wet, humid, Virginia summers.  But a few pioneering grape growers and winemakers have made huge strides over the past few decades, giving wine enthusiasts a taste for Virginia terroir.  Reporter Wilson Sayre explores this history and evolution of wine from the Old Dominion.

Virginia, on the east coast of the United States, has much history with grape growing, but not all of it was good. Today, however, exciting producers have mastered their microclimates and are making some of the freshest, most nuanced, terroir-driven wines in the United States.   This week I sit down with Elizabeth Smith of one of the top wineries in this lovely state, Afton Mountain Vineyards. We discuss everything from Virginia history with grape growing, to terroir obsession, to the European flare of the region, and why the wines are so darn good.  If you don't know much about VA or you're an obsessive this podcast will be equally fascinating!    Elizabeth and Tony Smith both grew up in Charlottesville and had lifelong ties the Blue Ridge Mountains. After working and raising a family in coastal VA, and even trying their hands at grape growing there (not quite the right terroir!), they decided to move back to their hometown for their second act – winegrowing and making. They bought Afton Mountain Vineyards in 2009 and in this show, Elizabeth shares their story and how they came to make some of the best wine in Virginia.   Elizabeth shares her background and how she went from investment management to property management to winery management (and rocked them all!)   Elizabeth gives us a true education on the Monticello appellation – what matters to quality wine, what is challenging in growing grapes here, and why she and Tony selected the most westerly site in the Monticello AVA to make their elegant wines   We dork out on microclimates, what makes Virginia so unique, and why elevation, and extremely attentive (obsessive) vineyard management is the only way to make great wine in Virginia and why sustainable viticulture is better than organic in a dicey climate like that in the Monticello area.   Elizabeth answers the question: Why does Damien Blanchon, their French winemaker, and so many other French winemakers find themselves in Virginia, and decide to stay (hint: challenge without restriction!)   We talk about the varietals that do well for Afton Mountain (Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, and Albariño for the whites, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Tannat, and Sangiovese for the reds) and the flavors they yield from this land. We have an interesting side bar about how Petit Verdot can really suck if not handled well!   We wrap with Elizabeth talking about how far Virginia wine has come in the last 10 years and a BIG teaser on a project Afton Mountain is starting this fall!   Find out more about Elizabeth and her wines at www.aftonmountainvineyards.com and come to the Underground Wine Event on 11/9/19 in Washington D.C. to meet her and taste her beautiful wines!   Thanks to our sponsors this week: Thanks to YOU! The podcast supporters on Patreon, who are helping us to make the podcast possible and who we give goodies in return for their help! For 30 years this year, Tarara has produced exceptional wines from its own grapes and those of neighboring vineyards. Jordan is in with us on Industry Night with Foodie and the Beast with tastes and talk of his path from “What am I gonna do with my life?” high school kid to celebrated winemaker; Tarara’s exceptional varietals, and if how, as winemaker, he and his farm are responding to and learning to work around climate change that, for example, brought record-setting amounts of rain to Northern Virginia last year. Dinner Work. With Lots and Lots of Community Effort. Welcome to a very special Thanksgiving episode! In this season of gratitude, I'm feeling very grateful for so many things, both personal and professional. What better way to celebrate that gratitude than with an event by the community for the community. Farm dinners at Caromont happen twice a year, at the beginning of the season to celebrate new growth, and at the end to celebrate harvest. Ceremonial beginnings and endings. All food is locally sourced and prepared by Food Folks who live and work in this region. They've become so popular I often see the same faces around the table, smiling, sipping wine, and introducing the newbies to the magic that is Caromont Farm. So when cheesemaker Gail Hobbs-Page asked me to record the event I did a happy dance. After listening to the results? I did another. And felt very grateful I captured this moment with sound. This Thanksgiving, as you travel and cook and take deep breaths because your Uncle Raymond said something idiotic, I hope you'll take a moment to be grateful for the things you have, rather than spending time dwelling on the things you want. After experiencing the 3rd Annual Farm Dinner at Caromont once again through audio, I find I have very much indeed. I wish you peace, joy, BIG LOVE, and extra stuffing. Happy Thanksgiving! To follow up on the Virginia wine podcast, conversations with Luca Paschina of Barboursville Vineyards, who has been making wine in Charlottesville for 25 years, and a quick snippet of Kelly White of Glen Manor. Both will highlight why VA wine is so unique. A few things on the podcast:  1. The recordings were in tasting rooms. If you don't like ambient noise, skip this one. 2. You'll hear my dad and Frank Morgan of Drink What You Like blog and Virginia wine expert asking questions as well. I travelled heavy this time!  Most of the podcast is a conversation with Luca Paschina of Barboursville Vineyards in Charlottesville, Virginia. They are a standard-bearer for quality in the region, as one of the oldest and finest producers: We discuss Luca's background -- his schooling in the Piedmont of Italy, his experiences, and how he wound up in Charlottesville working for the Zonin family at Barboursville in 1990 Luca explains the improving reputation of Virginia and how Barboursville works to promote the region by making excellent wine We get NERDY -- talking about everything from vineyard management, to diseases that California nurseries have been sending their way and the economics of that, to use of oak, yeast, and wine fads. Then we talk about grapes, and there is some tasting of the Vermentino and the Bordeaux blend, Octagon (at one point I say "Sauvignon" and I'm talking about Cabernet Sauvignon, BTW).  Next we have a 5 minute snippet of a conversation with Kelly White of Glen Manor.  Kelly gives us specifics on vintage, how it works for them, and some examples of extreme vineyard management Then she discusses how they make wine and their philosophy and work ethic. These wines are top notch, and much of the magic comes from their orientation and ideas about great wine. Then we wrap! Enjoy!

The state of Virginia in the US has been trying to make great wine since the 1600s. After 350 years, they finally made it work! From great terroir to outstanding talent, this may be the most exciting place for wine in the US today.  After a listener question on the difference between Brouilly and Beaujolais, we talk Virginia wine: 1. The place has has 400 year history, but only about the last 30 have been exciting! 2. We talk about the challenges of climate, pests, humidity, etc of growing vitis vinifera in Virginia 3. We discuss the various regions and grapes of Virginia 4. I name names: Linden, Glen Manor, Barboursville, RdV, King Family, Veritas, Early Mountain and Blenheim make the list. This state has a bright future if they keep churning out wines like they do from the top talent in Virginia. Delicious stuff!

Cigar of the Week - Toro y Leon Habano Claro Exclusivo This exceptional cigar is a mélange of carefully selected and extremely aged tobacco leaves from Toro y Leon's fields in Esteli and Jalapa Valley in Nicaragua. Born from Cuban-seed long-filler and binder, these cigars are all draped in a rare Habano-seed “desflorado” wrapper. The plants require constant vigilance and when the flower buds are just getting ready to bloom they are cut off giving the tobacco an extra rich and smooth flavor, making this type of wrapper to be among the best and the most expensive available anywhere. Other Habano Claro sizes: RETAIL NAME FACTORY NAME RING GAUGE LENGTH Dorado No. 2 Viñetas 50 6" Prominente Selección No.3 50 7-3/4" Histórico Selección No.1 48 7" Exclusivo Julietas 46 7" Elegancia Calypsos 35 7-1/4" No. 4 Populares 42 5" Famoso Deliciosos No. 2 52 5" Prestancia Centro No. 2 38 6-1/4" What else have you been smokin' Dale? El Centurion Robusto - 5” x 50 - A Nicaraguan puro made by Pepin Garcia utilizing Criollo ‘98 and Corojo ‘99 tobaccos that were matured for 3 years prior to rolling wrapped in an oily Habano leaf. This line was kicked off with only 850 boxes in 2007. Coffee, spice, caramel, cedar and roasted nuts are just some of the well balanced flavors in the full bodied smoke. The cigar starts off with that signature Pepin pepper in a creamy base. A light fruitiness like Bartlet pears appears occasionally throughout the cigar. The room aroma is bold and leathery. A truly wonderful cigar that pairs well with coffee or good brandy. Thanks to Paul P. for sharing this cigar - it’s right in my wheelhouse! La Escepcion Edicion Regional Italia, Selectos Finos (panatela) - 6.5” (166mm) x 38 - This regional edition revives an old Cuban brand that was established in the 1850’s and was discontinued in 1989. Habanos SA released 2000 boxes of this in 2011 for the Italian market, packaged in dress boxes of 25. Many thanks to Mark Neff for giving me the opportunity to try this cigar, which by the way, is a cigar worthy of a limited edition. Superior construction with a silky smooth Colorado Claro wrapper. The draw is just barely snug at the start, but opens up nicely after about ½”. Medium bodied, cool smoke is produced in spades, with a sweet cedar and light earthy core of flavors. The cigar is complex, offering additional flavors all along it’s length - black tea, citrus, sugar cane sweetness, light coffee and mild white pepper are just some of the overtones that easily were noted. A very nice cigar with a sophistication to it. Perfect anytime, but one I’d especially choose for a formal occasion. What else have you been smokin' Bob? CAO OSA SOL Lot 50 Cabaiguan Maduro Robusto - Craig inspired me. Also smoked more of the Flor de Copan - not a bad filler stick.. What's My Band?- This week's unbanded, the Avo Heritage Short Robusto cigar was provided by Jeff Curtis. Bob: Distinct hay aroma on the prelight sniff test. It's a nubby or what is now being called a half corona by some. Paired with Frogs Leap Chardonnay 2010 which is a herbal, astringent, crisp wine, the cigar is medium flavored but too much strength. The Cigar has a nutty retrohale. Together, the cigar is elevated with more smoothness and less bitter flavor. This cigar seems to burn hot and has a leathery, nutty retrohale but with too much nicotine. Wine was GR8T with or without the cigar. Last ⅓ of the cigar I got some leather and coffee flavor but it was too late to save this stick. Now I need to brush my teeth... Dale: Peaty barnyard aroma on the prelight. Wrapper is a gorgeous, oily Colo Maduro color. Good draw and good construction. Full bodied with a leather core. Some toffee sweetness, coffee and a touch of toasted nuts. Copious amounts of cool smoke. Some tannins in the last half gave good balance to the savory flavors. A bit strong, but not overly - best for pairing with a peaty Scotch like Lagavulin or Talisker, or maybe a big tawny Port. I think Honduras tobacco, no guess as to mfg. Do you have a suggestion for the unbanded cigar of the week? Every week Bob and Dale include an “unbanded cigar” segment in their show in which they smoke a cigar without any markings and give their honest opinions. Bob then opens a sealed envelope and discovers the cigar’s name and manufacturer. We'll also talk with Virginia's Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry, Todd Haymore, who is working closely with First Lady Maureen McDonnell to promote Virginia's wines across the commonwealth and around the world. Hampton Roads Magazine's Patrick Evans-Hylton is also in studio to share his Virginia wine favorites.
