More than 30 years ago, current Center for Innovation board chair Michele Holleran launched her eponymous data analytics firm with a focus that was considered revolutionary at the time: measuring the resident and staff satisfaction at senior living communities. Holleran's mission is now far more mainstream, and she joins “Elevate Eldercare” to discuss some of the more promising trends that she and her team have uncovered in recent years in a special preview of her new podcast, “The Data Dive.” For instance, for all the legitimate concern about building a resilient long-term care workforce, Holleran has found higher levels of staff engagement in eldercare than corporate America writ large – evidence that with the right combination of leadership and listening to caregiver and resident needs, the industry might be on stronger footing than believed. It's no secret that access to affordable housing in America is increasingly out of reach. Activists in the growing YIMBY (“Yes In My Back Yard”) movement believe they have a solution: build more of everything. On this episode, associate editor Griffin Oleynick speaks with Max Holleran, a sociologist at the University of Melbourne in Australia and author of Yes to the City: Millennials and the Fight for Affordable Housing, a detailed study of the YIMBYs. The YIMBYs' push for new construction, Holleran argues, won't entirely solve the problem of housing affordability. To do that, we must not only re-invest in alternatives like community land trusts, but also continue fighting for higher wages and greater income equality. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.09.30.510390v1?rss=1 Authors: Dawes, M. H., Estave, P. M., Albertson, S. E., Holleran, K. M., Jones, S. R. Abstract: Prevailing preclinical models of cocaine use have not resulted in an FDA-approved treatment for cocaine use disorder, potentially due to a focus on cocaine use in isolation, which may not translate well to polysubstance use in clinical populations. Clinically, nicotine has been shown to increase cocaine potency and reinforcing efficacy, but some preclinical studies suggest that non-contingent nicotine exposure is not sufficient to alter cocaine self-administration in rats; therefore, this experiment examined if the addition of nicotine to the cocaine solution would alter self-administration behavior. Male Sprague Dawley rats (N=7) were trained to self-administer cocaine (0.75mg/kg/inf), and tested on a long access, fixed ratio 1 schedule of reinforcement (6 hour sessions, unlimited inf, 5 days), for cocaine alone (0.75mg/kg/inf), followed by cocaine and nicotine (0.75mg/kg/inf cocaine +0.03mg/kg/inf nicotine). Finally, rats responded on a progressive ratio schedule for varied doses of cocaine with and without concurrent nicotine at a consistent dose (1.5, 0.75, 0.375, 0.19mg/kg/inf cocaine {+/-} 0.03mg/kg/inf nicotine). Unexpectedly, under long access conditions, rats self-administering cocaine and nicotine responded less than for cocaine alone, and did not escalate responding. However, under progressive ratio conditions, responding for cocaine and nicotine was greater than responding for cocaine alone across low and moderate cocaine doses, and decreased at high cocaine doses, indicating a leftward shift in the dose response curve. Together, these data highlight the importance of evaluating multiple outcome measures in nicotine + cocaine paradigms, and suggest that concurrent self-administration of cocaine and nicotine results in greater motivated responding than for cocaine alone. In this episode, we talk with Dr. Catherine Lang and Dr. Carey Holleran from Washington University in St. Louis about their article scheduled for publication in the January 2023 issue of JNPT titled “Improvement in the Capacity for Activity Versus Improvement in Performance of Activity in Daily Life During Outpatient Rehabilitation.” Dr. Lang and Dr. Holleran discuss the difference between patients' capacity in the clinic and their functional performance outside of the clinical setting. In this multi-site trial, they compared performance and capacity measures for patients with Parkinson disease and stroke, measuring upper limb and lower limb function. Tune in to hear more about their statistical analysis, selection of outcomes, and clinical implications of considering performance when evaluating patients, setting goals, and measuring progress. It's no secret that housing costs are climbing and income is struggling to keep up. It's a complex problem with a lot of loud voices. One of the newest voices, however, is the YIMBY (“Yes In My Backyard”) movement. This growing number of influential activists are calling for more construction and denser cities in order to increase affordability. Max Holleran's book, Yes to the City, offers an in-depth look at the movement and how it fits into the larger debate of how we shape where we live. From YIMBY's origins in San Francisco to its current group of activists pushing for new apartment towers in places like Boulder, Austin, and London, Holleran explores how changing the way we look at urban density can make an impact. Once blamed for overpopulated slums, urban density has become a rallying cry for millennial activists locked out of housing markets and simultaneously unable to pay high rents. For many, the YIMBY movement has become a way forward. Yet, with many points of view and powers at play in this fast-changing public debate, there is much tension between activists and proponents of other housing movements. In this installment of Town Hall's In the Moment podcast, Marcus Harrison Green talks with Holleran about the current state of the housing movement, the history that got us here, and how both might shape the future of where we live. Max Holleran is Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Melbourne. His work focuses on urban development in Europe and the United States, particularly how cities manage tourism. He has written about gentrification, architectural aesthetics, post-socialist urban planning, and European Union integration for anthropology, sociology, geography, and history journals. His work on cities and politics has also appeared in Australian Book Review, Boston Review, Contexts, Dissent, Slate, and many other publications. He is currently an Urban Studies Foundation research fellow. He is the author of Tourism, Urbanization, and the Evolving Periphery of the European Union. Marcus Harrison Green is the publisher of the South Seattle Emerald and a columnist with The Seattle Times. Growing up in South Seattle, he experienced first-hand the impact of one-dimensional stories on marginalized communities, which taught him the value of authentic narratives. After an unfulfilling stint in the investment world during his twenties, Marcus returned to his community with a newfound purpose of telling stories with nuance, complexity, and multidimensionality with the hope of advancing social change. This led him to become a writer and found the South Seattle Emerald. He was awarded the Seattle Human Rights Commissions' Individual Human Rights Leader Award for 2020. The exorbitant costs of urban housing and the widening gap in income inequality are fueling a combative new movement in cities around the world. A growing number of influential activists aren't waiting for new public housing to be built. Instead, they're calling for more construction and denser cities in order to increase affordability. Yes to the City: Millennials and the Fight for Affordable Housing (Princeton UP, 2022) offers an in-depth look at the "Yes in My Backyard" (YIMBY) movement. From its origins in San Francisco to its current cadre of activists pushing for new apartment towers in places like Boulder, Austin, and London, Max Holleran explores how urban density, once maligned for its association with overpopulated slums, has become a rallying cry for millennial activists locked out of housing markets and unable to pay high rents. Holleran provides a detailed account of YIMBY activists campaigning for construction, new zoning rules, better public transit, and even candidates for local and state office. YIMBY groups draw together an unlikely coalition, from developers and real estate agents to environmentalists, and Holleran looks at the increasingly contentious battles between market-driven pragmatists and rent-control idealists. Arguing that advocates for more housing must carefully weigh their demands for supply with the continuing damage of gentrification, he shows that these individuals see high-density urbanism and walkable urban spaces as progressive statements about the kind of society they would like to create. Chronicling a major shift in housing activism during the past twenty years, Yes to the City considers how one movement has reframed conversations about urban growth. Stephen Pimpare is director of the Public Service & Nonprofit Leadership program and Faculty Fellow at the Carsey School of Public Policy at the University of New Hampshire.

Her unique sound and gorgeous musical style left us begging for more, so we asked Helena a few more questions: You said your father was a major musical influence in your life. Was he your main teacher?Yes actually, my mother too. My dad is a guitar player and my mom plays piano. I got more of 60’s & 70’s rock n roll/folk/latin influence from my father, and my soul/jazz/funk influence from my mothers musical palette. They both were very busy growing up so my main musical teacher became the internet, mainly youtube. How long have you been playing guitar and do you play any other instruments?I have been playing guitar for almost 10 years now. I also enjoy playing a bit of piano. How old were you when you wrote your first song?I was around 12 years old when I wrote my first song. No recordings exist but I have the lyrics written and saved on paper. It’s interesting to me to read my 12 year old perspective on friendship & loss. The song is titled Mind Games. What do you love about being a musician?I love the freedom to express myself the most. Writing music, performing it, recording it, & releasing it, is the way I process my life experiences. It is extremely cathartic for me to set my music free. It’s most natural for me to sing what I feel rather than saying what I feel, and it is exceptionally beautiful when a listener can relate or draw their own personal interpretation from the music I have shared. You have played in so many great venues including the House of Blues and the Lightning in a Bottle Music Festival. What has been your favorite and why?My favorite has to be Lightning in a Bottle Music Festival. I was performing at a small tent there called the Tea Tent where people sit on the floor and share cups of tea and conversations. I was performing with around 10 musicians & close friends of mine. The energy from them and the unexpectedly large crowd we drew is hard to put into words. It was a great example of how music can bring people together in the most positive way. What is your dream gig?My dream gig is opening for or sharing the stage with any one of my musical heroes who are still alive. To name a few: Lianne La Havas, Margaret Glaspy, Esperanza Spalding, Alice Phoebe Lou, Andy Shauf, The California Honeydrops, Paul Simon, & Joni Mitchell. For More Information:helenaholleranmusic.comInstagram: helenaholleranFacebook: helenaholleranSpotify: helenaholleranTo watch this week’s entire episode of Living 757, click here! And if you would like to see someone featured on the show, please send a message to Share@Living757.com and you may just see them here soon!

On today's show we interview Director of Photography Steven Holleran about The Land. Trailer: www.imdb.com/videoplayer/vi223720473 The Land premiered earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival. Executive produced by rapper NAS, the film follows four teenage boys who devote their summer to escaping the streets of Cleveland, Ohio to pursue a dream life of professional skateboarding. Holleran’s past credits include: the short film Trying Not to Explode, which took home the 2015 Nashville Film Festival Short Narrative Award; the documentary Fading into the Blue, shot over 12 months in the South Pacific; and commercials for clients including Under Armour, Nike, Android, AT&T and FIFA. Graduating from USC’s School of Cinematic Arts with a MFA in Film Production, Holleran first began experimenting with cameras as a teenager shooting landscapes and short documentaries. A passionate outdoorsman, he became fascinated with the stories of great explorers like Ernest Shackleton. The notion of adventure through filmmaking ignited Holleran’s interest in the art of cinematography as a way to experience the world around him, while exploring human imagination. Based in Los Angeles, Holleran is represented by Dattner Dispoto and Associates (DDA).
Father Michael Holleran joins Lama Surya Das this week to discuss the intersection of Christianity and Buddhism. There is much insight to be had, as Father Micheal give his unique perspective on contemplative practice, shared wisdom, and the essence of awakening. “Awake sleeper, rise from the dead and Christ will give you life.” – Ephesians 5:14
