In this conversation, Eliza, a GP and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, discusses her expertise in Neuroprotective Developmental Care, an evidence-based practice of working with the biology of our children to understand the ways in which we can support our family. She emphasises the importance of an individualised approach, understanding infant sleep needs, and the significance of co-regulation in parenting. The discussion also addresses common misconceptions about sleep training and the need for flexibility in parenting. In this conversation, we discuss the complexities of baby sleep, addressing common concerns such as early waking, the witching hour, and the challenges of managing sleep with multiple children. Eliza is the founder of a Perinatal GP clinic in Sydney's Inner West and, along with her team, offer comprehensive care for Perinatal women, babies, including lactation and sleep support focus on the possums approach. There is a wealth of knowledge, expertise and empathy from Dr Eliza and I recommend you pass this episode on to as many parents as you can as it offers ways in which you can take the guess work out of supporting your child's needs and encourages reassurance for parents and the very undervalued backstage labour of raising our little humans. The discussion also highlights the significance of mental health for parents and the need for support during challenging sleep phases.Eliza is a GP and lactation consultant with a focus on perinatal care.Neuroprotective developmental care aims to protect a baby's optimal development. The approach emphasizes individualized care based on a baby's unique needs.Sleep is a biological need, not a learned skill.Families often face conflicting information about infant care. It's important to acknowledge varying sleep needs among babies.Co-regulation is beneficial for a baby's development.Parents should feel empowered to follow their baby's cues.Routine can be beneficial for parents, but flexibility is key for babies.Understanding a baby's biology helps alleviate parental pressure. Babies communicate their needs, not manipulate. It's okay to seek help if sleep is unmanageable.Experimenting with sleep arrangements can help.Understanding your baby's natural body clock is key.The witching hour is a common phenomenon for babies.Catnapping is normal and not harmful.Sleeping through the night varies for each baby.Letting go of control can ease parenting stress.Support from professionals can be beneficial.Finding what works for your family is essential.https://www.instagram.com/dr.eliza.hannam/https://www.nurturedmedical.com.au/https://ndcinstitute.au/https://possumsndc.com/https://possumssleepprogram.com/when-baby-cries-a-lot-brief-and-simple/the-baby-who-cries-a-lot-in-the-first-3-4-months-of-life-possums-5-domain-approach/about-the-discontented-little-baby-bookhttps://www.instagram.com/motherhoodwithketurah/

In this conversation, I sit with Nathalie Biviano, a relationship coach, to explore the complexities of motherhood, the impact of societal and individual expectations on women's roles, and the dynamics of masculine and feminine energies in relationships. It all starts with a Disney depiction she so beautifully the one that romanticises the couple but doesn't guide us on what happens 'after the kiss', or in this case, after the baby is born. Some of the themes we cover are:Resentment, Nat explains three contributing reasons why this feeling is so common, and how to approach it from a different lens. The importance of self-worth, communication, and breaking the cycle of hypermasculinity as a way to connect and validate one another. The way our broken system has let us down and the unreasonable load that is placed on families today that sets us up for disconnection. Self-ownership and empowerment to aid in fulfillment as women and ultimately as a couple. This is a very honest and practical conversation and the way Nat offers expresses her wisdom with transparency and real-life practical examples, will have you wanting to write notes to implement in your own life and relationship.Enjoy, forward this episode on to your mama friends and we'd love to know what your key takeaways were. https://www.instagram.com/spinetinglingmarriage/Would you like to know the details of Nat's up & coming retreat? In part two of this series of episodes on my personal motherhood journey, I discuss the feelings that come up in early motherhood, such as feeling as though we are 'failing' as a mother, simply because our baby is not 'behaving' or fitting into the expectation that we had for him/her. In my opinion, even if we are unaware of it, we may believe this story that our role as mothers should be completely consuming and self-sacrificing, leaving us with no time to even think of our own interests, needs and desires. Along with that, we may link being this self-sacrificing, consumed mother with being a ‘good mother'. And this thinking starts so early. I explore the themes of mother guilt, mother anger, the perfect mother myth, co-regulation, the mother-baby dyad and the basics of a human relationship. It also offers some real life examples of what I hear mother's say in conversations when holding a measuring stick towards their own mothering. Please reach out if you'd like to share, or get some clarity around this topic. Much love, Keturah xxhttps://www.instagram.com/motherhoodwithketurah/

Morgana speaks about the wobbly early days, and why having someone their to just focus their attention on you, as the mother, is vital. She talks to both the joy and the overwhelm and offers a great tool for when things get too much!I love that Morgana shares that she is 'proud of herself' as she has witnessed her own 'growing up' through and with her children and how she is finally able to see herself in or own wholeness and pursue some of her passions, outside of motherhood. Over the twenty years that I have been working with women, there have been countless mothers I have supported that have also taught me so much, by witnessing their dedication, courage and tenderness for their families. There are also those that leave a special place in my heart, Morgana is one. Enjoy!

Today I speak with Ysaline, mother of two, life coach and doula. Ysaline recounts her own very different postpartum experiences, in part due to her father passing just two months after her baby was born, and one baby being born during the time of the Covid 19 pandemic, a period when there was no clear vision of the future and so much uncertainty as to when she could hug her overseas family again. We chat about the unrealistic expectations we often place on ourselves as mothers, the beliefs we may carry around sadness, crying and sleep, and the powerful transformation we go through and why support, care and help is vital to every mother. Ysaline shares her beautiful practice of Rebozo massage, rooted in Mexican cultural practices for releasing physical tension, working through the emotions, slowing down and deeply honouring the complexity of all of life's transitions.Ysaline runs womens circles in Sydney and monthly Mums' Cafe Connect meetups in Redfern in both English & French languages.I hope you enjoy the episode.Shownotes:YSALINE'S INSTAGRAM: @mamamourYOUTUBE VERSION: https://youtu.be/c6znPbGKL3I

Please use discretion when deciding if this episode is right for you. **Today, a mother named Fatima shares her experience of birthing three children, whereby one of them, her daughter, was born still. Whilst this is understandably a sensitive and painful topic, Fatima speaks so gracefully about her beautiful, serene and intimate birth in which she met her baby girl and then bravely farewelled her. This topic can trigger the pain of loss, particularly the loss of a child, and I ask that you listen with self-compassion and reach out for support if this has been your experience. Fatima talks openly about the silence that happens after the baby is born, the truth that your body will still go into a physiological 'postpartum phase' after losing a baby, the need to give your body time to rest and recover and the emotional challenges that arise with this.Fatima beautifully brings light into what could be a very heavy conversation with her softness and inner wisdom, calmness and knowing. Kate shares very openly and candidly about her personal journey into motherhood, which involves the loss and grief around two miscarriages and one medical termination within the space of one year. This is not an easy topic and I ask that you use discretion when deciding if the content is right for you at present, depending on your own experiences, and the feelings it may raise. Whilst Kate does not sugar-coat the hard parts and the toll these cruel experiences have on our body, mind & soul, she also speaks with such dignity and compassion when talking of her losses and you can't help but notice the hope in her voice. Kate is using her painful experiences to promote the change that she would like to see in her workplace, the construction industry. She has now trained to be a doula and is using these skills and understanding to bring awareness and emotional support to her colleagues going through similar situations and facilitating positive workplace policies and changes that support women, who are mothers, with maternity leave and return to work conditions. EP.1 | THE INTENTION | POSTPARTUM IS FOREVER | WITH KETURAH STOLTENBERG

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 12, 2024 8:27

Hello and Welcome to the Postpartum is Forever Podcast. My name is Keturah Stoltenberg, mother of two and Postpartum Doula, and I am super excited to bring this heart-led podcast to you. I'd like to spend a few minutes explaining how this Podcast came to be, what it offers and how it can benefit you, as the listener. My motherhood journey began in the year 2000, with the birth of my first son, Ezra, and I went on to birth my second son, Otto in the year 2006. I have dedicated most of my working life to facilitating the wellbeing of mothers in the Perinatal space, firstly as a Massage Therapist, then as a Birth Doula, and now as a Postpartum Doula and Matrescence Educator. I truly believe that Postpartum is forever and that motherhood is the most enriching personal development program you will ever embark on. Whilst we may be our child's first teachers, our children are our greatest teachers, and I have personally learnt more about myself, my highest values, priorities, and the person that I truly am, through and because of being a mother. One of the things that I have consistently noticed over this time is that women, who aremothers, are both powerful, yet vulnerable. I noticed as they entered their motherhood journeys, they were deeply called firstly, to connect with other mothers, and secondly to share their stories. However, for many, the opportunities to connect with other mothers, or we could say, the village, just does not exist. I am not referring to the superficial conversation when we are saying a quick hello at the school gate, or the endless discussion we have with our mother's group about our baby's sleep routine, feeding and reaching developmental milestones. What I am referring to is the deeper conversations about how we view ourselves now, as mothers, but also as women, what is causing us joy and what is causing us grief. What we are really asking for is a listening ear, a kind face to empathise, or a warm hug to help us reset our nervous system. We need to be able to talk freely & openly about the so-called ‘taboo' subjects, without guilt, or fear of judgement. And that is why I created this podcast. To give mothers a voice to share from the heart the highs & lows of their mothering experiences, to let go of the mum guilt, and not feel ashamed for things that they cannot control, and to offer wisdom & tools to others who might be struggling in their current season of mothering, something we were designed to do solo. As mothers, we are often isolated, and by this I don't mean living in rural areas, I'm referring to isolation that comes from not feeling emotionally safe to share our real struggles and reflections, and if we are not being held in these ways, we can begin to feel empty, and sadly, we often internalise this, wondering if we are the only ones having these feelings around motherhood, and if there is something wrong with us. I want you to know that if you are finding parts of mothering hard, you are not alone in these struggles and there is nothing wrong with you. It is hard. And we won't love every aspect of it. At times, you may feel ‘less than', but know that you are not failing, it's a failing system with little support. Many women say they feel lost, as if existing between two worlds as it were, the world that they had known before becoming a mother, and the one that they find themselves in now. And this takes time, firstly to understand what we are feeling, make sense of, and then adjust to this period that might feel unsettling for a time. So, if you are a woman listening to this podcast because you have birthed a baby, I would like to acknowledge that what you have experienced is huge and your story matters. I also want to say that it okay to grieve the loss of the identity you had before becoming a mother. Along with the birth of your baby, you have also been birthed as a Mother, and this is whether
