Mother's Day just passed and we want to celebrate Mothers but also speak about the power of Mothers and how this can affect your children. In another Podcast triple header we sit down with women with different focuses for Mothers. First up is a powerful Mother Daughter duo Jeri Godhigh and Jamia Ponder. Their goal is to rebuild broken bonds between mothers and daughters with the belief that forgiveness provides freedom to move past hurt and pain. Once we're done chatting up with these Queens we pass it to Christina Acosta-Martinez a community builder for moms of color, postpartum doula, wife, and mama. She founded Growing Up Gorgeous, LLC to provide a diverse community if moms with a one of a kind support system. Everyone forgets about mom once the baby is born but just like it takes a village to raise a child it takes a village to care for a new mom. Postpartum Doulas can help. We tie this episode up with a beautiful pink bow with Christy Gomez, a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and founder of The Woman| The Mother . She brings home the importance of personal freedom and emotional regulation in motherhood. Welcome to This Glorious Mess Little Kids. A twice-weekly look at parenting as it really is - confusing, exhausting, inspiring, funny, and full of surprises. So many surprises! On average new mums are sent home three days after giving birth, often without the postnatal emotional and physical support they're probably going to need. But the fourth trimester doesn't have to be like this. In cultures outside of the western world, it's a time for new mums to be with family, be pampered, rest and be supported.  Postpartum doulas are here to bridge that gap. But what do they actually do? And are they necessary or a bit ... indulgent? Yes, you get to hear the ladies share their testimonies and stories to motherhood and why they became Sisters in Loss doulas and how they liked the course. Have you heard of the term Intrauterine Growth Restriction (IUGR)? Intrauterine Growth Restriction is a condition in which a baby doesn't grow to normal weight during pregnancy. Causes of intrauterine growth restriction vary but include placenta abnormalities, high blood pressure in the mother, infections, and smoking or alcohol abuse. With this condition, a baby is born weighing less than 90 percent of other babies at the same gestational age. Today’s guest experienced two early miscarriages, and determined to become a mother lost over 130 pounds in hopes of reducing any barriers to having a healthy baby. Have you heard of recurrent pregnancy loss? Recurrent Pregnancy Loss is defined by two or more failed pregnancies and is considered distinct from infertility. When the cause is unknown, each pregnancy loss merits careful review to determine whether specific evaluation may be appropriate, and after two or more losses, a thorough evaluation is warranted.  Today’s guest experienced 5 miscarriages after having her baby girl, one being an ectopic pregnancy where she lost her fallopian tube, and then was diagnosed with secondary infertility.  Anesha Stanley’s first pregnancy ended with a miscarriage in 2014. Three months later she found out she was pregnant with her rainbow baby girl, Sinai. She waited two years before trying to conceive again. In 2017 we began experiencing recurrent pregnancy losses. Miscarriage #2 on January 14, 2017. An ectopic pregnancy #3, November 1, 2017 was treated with methotrexate. Anesha went onto experience two more losses and was diagnosed with secondary infertility and tubal failure.   In this episode, Anesha takes us back to what it was like experiencing the highs of finding out she was pregnant and the lows and pain of miscarriage.  She shares how she felt after being diagnosed with secondary infertility and tubal failure, and how and why she started her non profit Keys of Hope Foundation and became a Sisters in Loss Birth & Bereavement Doula. Anxiety is one of the most requested topics from listeners here on the show. So many moms want to know more about it and/or what they can do to manage theirs or make it disappear. I’m not a medical professional. I can’t diagnose anxiety, nor am I ever trying to by presenting episodes about anxiety. This isn’t medical advice, this is a discussion among moms. My goal is to empower mothers to learn more about themselves and encourage them to learn more about topics that inspire them, interest them, or even concern them. Topics like anxiety. We’re not going to shy away from it here on Elevating Motherhood, but instead seek out information and potential options. I don’t believe there is a one size fits all answer to anything…especially when it comes to moms & anxiety. It feels like we’re in this sea of not-knowing when it comes to anxiety: we don’t know a ton about it even though it’s a very common notion, we have moments in our lives where we *think we might have it but we’re not sure and we don’t want to talk about it if we suspect we do, or if we do talk about it, there’s sometimes judgment or we’re offered unhelpful “advice,” or it’s ignored altogether. There are actually people who believe that anxiety isn’t real. There are so many opinions about anxiety, it’s no wonder moms feel paralyzed and don’t even know where to start seeking answers, information, and support. So let’s change that. I want to talk openly about anxiety, share stories, and hear from moms & professionals. I really want to explore ways we can learn to support ourselves and other moms. Let’s have the conversations. My goal is to publish many episodes in an “Options for Anxiety” series where we learn about and dive into ideas that might help: Those of us with anxiety, those of us who wonder if we might have it, and even those of us without anxiety who want to learn how to be more supportive. Today’s guest is the perfect intro to this series! Breon Michel is a parent coach & educator who supports and empowers families with tools to create more ease, enjoyment, and self-compassion in daily life. With extensive training in mindfulness & self-compassion, nervous system regulation, and plenty of personal practice (and mishaps!) as a parent, she uses a heartfelt and integrative approach to helping parents deal with the challenges and vulnerabilities of raising children in the modern world. Breon is a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction teacher with a Master’s in Applied Positive Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania. A love of learner at heart, she’s also partway through the Organic Intelligence HEART training, which is giving her greater insight into the key aspects of healthy nervous system functioning. In today’s episode, we talk about: What anxiety is * What’s a coach vs. a therapist * Causes of anxiety (cultural, societal, familial, ancestral, etc.) * When to reach out for help & support * Approaches to therapy, including: somatic experiencing therapy, organic intelligence, talk therapy, family/parent coaching, self compassion, mindfulness & meditation, showing up as your genuine self, and anxiety & children RESOURCES: Psychology Today, Postpartum Support International, Postpartum Doulas, Steve Hoskinson (founder of Organic Intelligence) – “The job is enjoyment.” Peter Levine (Somatic Experiencing Therapy) LINKS: Love the Show? They emphasize that their primary role isn't to take care of the baby, but to take care of, strengthen, and support the mother and the family. We discuss postpartum mood disorders and how they could occur anytime within the first year. We talk about the importance of eating well during postpartum, as well as how the postpartum doulas will help keep the balance in the upkeep of the home and support of the family during this transitionary period. We then discuss the process of training and certifying postpartum doulas. We also discuss the importance of viewing Postpartum doulas as trained professionals, and encourage investing in postpartum assistance, emphasizing the joy it brings to family and doulas. -Sierra and Danka's Background in Postpartum care; Types of Doulas at Bud to Blossom 2:10 -Nutrition in Postpartum; Helping Maintain Balance in the Home 23:34 -Training for Postpartum Doulas 31:54 “What is really nice about a postpartum doula is you don't have to tell them how to do things and what to do.
