In this episode of the Lived Experience podcast, mental health advocate Billy Todd shares his story of managing anxiety and turning his life around.Billy emphasizes the seriousness of anxiety and its impact on a person's life, and shares what he did to manage it. During the COVID-19 outbreak in Melbourne in April-May 2020, he found comfort in chaotic environments, which research suggests is common among people with anxiety. Despite the comfort he felt, he found that he neglected his own needs during that time and accumulated a lot of emotions, which hit him all at once and led to emotional distress.Billy learned the importance of focusing on physical health, including exercise and nutrition, to improve mental health. He also listens to science-based podcasts and does a lot of reading and research to further his knowledge. Additionally, Billy discusses how creating an alter ego named Pablo helps him to counteract his negative self-talk.The episode also features a speaker who shares similar experiences with managing anxiety and finding ways to cope. They sought help and spent three weeks at a psychiatric hospital in Sydney, where they received group and one-on-one therapy with a psychiatrist. Through therapy, they learned coping mechanisms to recognize and manage abandonment issues.Listeners of the Lived Experience podcast can share their own stories by contacting the host through the podcast's website or social media. In this episode of the Lived Experience podcast, host Joel Kleber interviews Georgia, a psychiatric nurse who works in a private inpatient facility. Georgia discusses her passion for mental health care and why she finds it rewarding. She explains that working in a psychiatric facility is not like what is portrayed in the movies and that patients are provided with a calm and relaxed environment, similar to a home away from home.Joel asks Georgia about the process of getting help in these facilities, and Georgia explains that in the public setting, involuntary patients are held if they are at harm to themselves or others. In the private setting, patients are referred by a GP or psychiatrist and must be willing to go voluntarily.Georgia also discusses her thoughts on electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), explaining that it is a last-resort treatment for dire circumstances where medication has failed. She has seen it work wonders in some cases but acknowledges the potential side effects. The episode also covers visiting hours for families, the challenges of bringing children into psychiatric facilities, and the importance of mental health tribunals in the public setting.Overall, Georgia provides valuable insight into the workings of psychiatric facilities and the care provided to patients.Big thanks to Georgia for sharing her story and the work that she does along with all the other mental health nurses throughout Australia and the World. Welcome to today's episode, where we'll be discussing the fascinating topic of how long people are remembered generally. It's often said that most people are forgotten about in 3 generations, meaning that their memories and legacies tend to fade away within 75-100 years of their passing. While this statement may hold some truth, it's important to note that it's not always the case for everyone. Some people leave a lasting impact on the world, and their legacies are remembered for centuries. So with this in mind, why do we tend to be held back by others' opinions of ours or fear of change in general? If you have lost someone, what are you doing to honour them in your life no matter how big or small? I was asked to be a guest on the well-known "I swear I never" podcast, which is about finding yourself in a situation you SWEAR, you never could have predicted? They bring you the extraordinary stories of everyday people - from the bizarre to the heartbreaking, they don't hold back. They have a different theme every week, and last week I was the guest to talk about part of my story. I tried to speak from the heart, and if I were on again, I probably would have more concise thoughts. However, big thanks to Bek Day and Tess Lazarous for the opportunity. Very special episode with Little Dreamers Founder, Madeleine Buchner OAM speaking to us for a full hour about young carers and what her organisation does in this much-needed area. Maddy grew up caring for her younger brother, who had a range of chronic illnesses, and her mother, who was diagnosed with breast cancer. At nine years of age, she identified a gap in the support system for Young Carers and began to raise awareness through fundraising events and stalls.Over a decade later and with more than 5,000 young people reached nationwide, Little Dreamers is Australia's leading Young Carer organisation. Across a range of key support programs co-designed with young people in caring roles, we're breaking down barriers and empowering youth, with a vision to ensure that every Young Carer around the world is supported by someone or something by the year 2030.We do not need more hotlines, however, we need more support to organisations like Little Dreamers and Satellite foundation who do so much unheralded work in the community. Huge thanks to Maddy for her time out of her busy schedule and next time it comes to donating, please consider this organisation or other relevant ones in your area that help young carers. To learn more about them please visit https://www.littledreamers.org.au/If you like the episode, please consider leaving a review or telling someone you know!

Rose Cuff, is the founder and executive director of Satellite Foundation which is an organisation dedicated to helping young people who have a parent(s) with a mental illness. I talk about Satellite a lot on this show as I know how important this organisation is in changing the future of many children who would often not be supported by the current mental health care system. Satellite foundation was even specifically mentioned in the Victorian's Royal Commission into the Mental Health system. Rose is a brilliant person who has dedicated more than a decade to helping children and young people in the community. In this interview, we chat about why she created satellite, what it does and how they make an impact. We cover a lot of other ground as well about the topic of mental illness and mental health in general.
