Beacon exhibit showcases country's muralists In Cuba, pedestrians avoid the sidewalks and stroll in the streets because a hunk of building could rain down on their heads. The country's infrastructure is falling down, says Frank Mesa, owner of the Changolife Arts Gallery in Beacon, which specializes in Cuban art. "But the main asset is the people. They're creative and love the arts," he says. Bringing beauty to the blight, Cuban muralists blanket the crumbling walls with imaginative works grand and small, creating a riot of styles that stray far beyond the graffiti-esque pieces and throw-ups many Americans equate with impromptu street art. Rhinebeck artist Franc Palaia toured the country in 2013 and 2018, taking photos that form the meat of the gallery's current show, Urban Cuba - Cuba Urbano, which continues through Aug. 31. A chronicler of street imagery since the Basquiat days, Palaia works with multiple media and travels the world taking photos. "Streets, billboards, signs, all kinds of things, but you get the sense of a country by what's on its walls, the drop cloths of a society," he says. "In liberal democracies, you see a lot of wild, crazy stuff. If the walls are spotless, it's usually a dictatorship." Cuban street artists smash that maxim. Colors burst. Pink is popular. Many works convey a cartoonish viewpoint, including "Rusty Mural" and "Double Story," though Palaia has manipulated the surfaces. Unlike China and North Korea, the internet is uncensored in Cuba, "so [street artists] scour social media and see what's happening in other countries because they feel left out," he says. "The styles and techniques are all over the place." Discernable patterns are rare. The main monolith in "Green Scraffito" is a scratched-up wall, similar to the way vandals (or artists) etch patterns into glass and plastic panels on the subway. Using special archival glue, Palaia affixes the photo prints onto backgrounds designed to resemble the deteriorated surfaces covered by the original murals, including sheetrock, plywood, polystyrene and cement board. In one attempt to replicate the dilapidation, he transformed a featherweight piece of Styrofoam into something that looks like a disfigured chunk of concrete and, somehow, a small house with a face (taken from a mural) covering one side. Cuban's street artists conjure "surprisingly strange imagery, but nothing is hard-edge political," he says. It's rare to find Che Guevara's mug out and about, but one piece includes his famous visage topped with a beret. It already sold. Some images on display convey subtle forms of resistance, says Mesa. One work states "These Eyes Realize Real Lies" in elaborate English script. A familiar figure found on the walls of Havana wears a green ski mask pulled over radiant yellow eyes, sometimes dons red headphones and is always accompanied by the equation 2 + 2 = 5. Mesa, a Metro-North employee with a bachelor's degree in Africana Studies, established the gallery last year. His father, Francisco, a confidant of Fidel Castro in the 1950s, renounced the revolution after the future dictator embraced Communism in the later stages of his successful coup against autocratic U.S. puppet Fulgencio Batista. Francisco's brother, a prominent judge, hid him until the great escape in 1961, then went from the bench to a prison cell for 12 years. In 1966, Mesa's father reunited with his wife, Martha, in Elmhurst, Queens. They're the only members of the family to leave the country, so a special visa lets Mesa visit kin, which he does often. During trips, he scouts for artistic talent. The vibe inside Changolife, a former classroom at the old Beacon High School (now the Kube Art Center), is chill. Two black couches and a black curtain around the kitchen and storage area punctuate the gray and white space with huge windows. Chango, the gallery's namesake, is a raunchy, syncretic Cuban deity who loves music and dancing. Next to one of the couches stands a table topped with a...

In this week's episode of The People's Project: DAN HAS A PROBLEM #CookversusCrook Daniel Andrews, Brett Sutton and Dandenong council have created a monster! A slug that threatens the Premier's own seat: Mulgrave. Ian Cook founded iCook Foods where a slug was planted by a corrupt Melbourne council with backing from the Labor Party. With a team of retired detectives Ian has defeated all charges and now openly labels the players involved as 'corrupt' with not a single defamation action or threat levied in response. Ian is running in Mulgrave to stand against corruption in Victoria. CORRUPT COUNCILS Casey council was dismissed by Labor MP Adem Somyurek in 2020 for some of 'the most corrupt conduct ever seen in a Victorian council' with property developers paying bribes to councillors and Labor MPs. IBAC investigations have since revealed via covert telephone recordings that Premier Daniel Andrews has not only dined with such property developers, but has indeed discussed planning decisions at those dinners. The CEO of Dandenong Council also goes under the microscope as Ian lays out hundreds of thousands of dollars that have gone missing, bombshell board minutes, implications with Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton, and millions of dollars 'disappeared' by the Labor government in the winding up of Community Chef. CORRUPT POLICE? A senior Victoria Police officer made a submission to IBAC with detailed allegations about a cover-up inside the highest levels of Victoria Police. That submission alleges and implicates Shane Patton and lays out evidence of the 'Red Shirts Rort' investigations (into Victorian Labor stealing $400,000) being covered up. Clare Pain: Medical Journalist Writing For Doctors Throughout the Pandemic

Clare Pain is a medical journalist. During the first two years of the pandemic her work involved writing up scientific papers for doctors in Australia – to keep them up to date with the science. She started to notice some strange changes to the culture of the medical profession and medical journalism in Australia and had increasing doubts about the way the pandemic was being handled by governments. She was particularly disturbed by mandates for vaccination and the TGA's approach to ivermectin. She left her job in December 2021 which freed her to carry out the Australian Survey of Reasons for COVID-19 Vaccination – a survey of nearly 27,000 people. Clare's personal journey includes being laughed at in an Australian hospital in February 2020 for wearing too much PPE (masks and gloves), and anxiously awaiting Covid-19 vaccinations, to January 2022 in Sheffield, England where she tried – unvaccinated – to catch COVID-19 to acquire immunity. It was three months before she was successful. In this interview we discussed: Behind the scenes of medical journalism throughout the pandemic The differences between UK and Australian culture The Australian ban on Ivermectin for COVID-19 Pharmaceutical companies' conflicts of interest The Australian Survey of Reasons for COVID-19 Vaccination Note: The 25 minute long credits to this interview display raw statements from Clare's survey where Australians shared why they received a C-19 vaccination. This 25min episode is entirely visual: text on screen showing thousands of survey responses. If you are listening to this, you are just going to hear lovely music for 25min. Why did Australians choose to get vaccinated against Covid-19? Did they really choose? Discernable guest Clare Pain is a medical journalist who wrote educational material for doctors throughout the pandemic and after noticing strange and sudden changes in her industry she started to investigate matters. In particular, she wanted to know whether valid consent was received for Covid-19 injections in Australia and her workplace declined the idea, she commissioned her own survey of 27,000 Australians. The quantitative results are presented in our longform interview with Clare (https://discernable.io/clare-pain-medical-journalist-writing-for-doctors-throughout-the-pandemic) but she also received a large amount of qualitative data. Here are the free-form responses she received from Australians describing why they received injection(s). The reasons range broadly over 25 minutes and are presented in categories. They should be read in conjunction with the Australian Immunisation Handbook (https://immunisationhandbook.health.gov.au/contents/vaccination-procedures/preparing-for-vaccination#valid-consent) and Article 6 of the UNESCO Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights (http://portal.unesco.org/en/ev.php-URL_ID=31058&URL_DO=DO_TOPIC&URL_SECTION=201.html). The statements on screen are raw and uncensored and do not necessarily represent the views of Discernable or Clare Pain. Some observations: From those who felt coerced or forced, there seems to be a lot of anger expressed toward governments but not much toward other Australians who willingly wanted one of the Pfizer/AstraZeneca/Moderna/Novavax products. From those who willingly wanted one of the Pfizer/AstraZeneca/Moderna/Novavax products, there seems to be a lot of anger expressed toward other Australians who were less willing. There is a surprisingly high amount of misinformation such as believing Australian laws automatically gave mask exemptions for the vaccinated, or that you could travel further than 5kms from home in Melbourne if vaccinated. There is a sizeable number of people who altruistically made the effort to protect their community, family or other group. There is an overwhelming pattern of being forced by authority figures: employers, judges, medical professionals denying treatment etc. Much of the pressure seems to be second order effects of government mandates ie social, work or bureaucratic threat be denied some part of normal life even in spheres where discretion was available (privately enforced mandates). The classical reason for vaccinating (to protect yourself through acquired immunity against a disease) constituted a minor percentage of the responses. Thomas Harrington, Senior Scholar at the Brownstone Institute, is an essayist and Professor Emeritus of Hispanic Studies at Trinity College in Hartford (USA) where he taught for 24 years. He joins Discernable to discuss what appears to be a worldwide repeat of the infamous Milgram experiment where ordinary people are pushed to commit extraordinary atrocities by authority figures. As an expert in the formation of identity, culture and language he often sheds light on the rhetorical 'framing' techniques used to influence broad populations. An example of is the rise of modern 'Nudge Units' within governments known by various names such as 'Behavioural Insights Unit' et al. The Professor believes that once a suitably convincing 'frame' is established, a subject can be made to accept any proposition contained within that frame even if that proposition is antithetical to the frame itself. This demonstrates the immense power and danger of 'framing' techniques employed by politicians and corporations throughout the globe to achieve their desired end. Thomas shows how this was successfully deployed to recruit a pliant population of 'police citizens' or 'karens' who zealously enforce the policies and propaganda of governments beyond what is legally stipulated and into the realm of cultural norms. In this discussion we also looked at identity making vs decision making, the religious impulse of humans and what can replace it in a secular age, the reliability of rationalism and science and parallel societal structures. Gina Castello sat down with The People's Project to discuss how her opinion of Daniel Andrews (Victorian Premier) has radically shifted after her grandfather died as part of the 801 deaths in Victoria's Hotel Quarantine fiasco. Gina is horrified by the way a previously 'decent Premier' reveals himself to be above the law and not subject to the same standards demanded of everyone else. In this interview Gina lays out the incompetence and inhumanity of the Victorian health system under Daniel Andrews' guidance, and why she will 'never trust him again'. Watch this episode ad free at: https://discernable.io/we-are-people-not-numbers-vic-hotel-quarantine ------------------------------- A note for Discernable viewers: On reflection in the edit suite, I am not happy with the way I conducted this episode. We had a volunteer producer prepare the run sheet, and out of my own fear of scaring or insulting my guests and the similar people watching an episode like this, I adopted their attitude 'I'm starting to wonder if Dan actually didn't keep us safe at all'. The truth is, I've never waited for a political leader to 'keep us safe', and it's been more than a year since I gave up trying to justify Daniel Andrews' motivations. It may have been a true sentiment of mine from the very beginning of Discernable 2 years ago, but it certainly isn't now. Thankfully about halfway through this episode I threw off the run sheet in my mind and became more genuine. Moving forward, I will be more involved in the production of our news shows, and when in front of guests I will find my balls and be a man again. I'm embarrassed by my behaviour, but the story of what Gina and Angelo went through thanks to the Victorian government is too important to miss. ------------------------------- DISCERNABLE The Video Archive: https://discernable.io Prefer audio? Discernable has given much coverage to the Freedom Convoy Truck Protest in Canada and the positive voices around the movement but with so many Canadians also against the protest, we felt it was only right to hear from their side as well. Tim Van Winckle is a resident of Ottawa, Canada. Ottawa was the centre of the protest and is a very pro-government city, much like Canberra, Australia. Tim believes the protest was ill thought out, fragmented, hijacked at times, and overall ineffective. If you follow accounts such as https://www.instagram.com/freedomconvoy2022 you would understand the protest in a very positive light. If you turn on the legacy media, you would perhaps see the protests in a similar light to what is explored here. As always, make up your own mind and remember that we are all on the same team: #TeamHuman whether we like it or not.
