“Humor was another of the soul's weapons in the fight for self-preservation.” These are the words of Viktor Frankl, psychologist, Nazi concentration camp survivor and author of "Man's Search for Meaning." Whenever I spill coffee on myself, run late after being stuck in traffic, forget to make a bill payment, etc. I try my best to think of him (after cursing a bit) and look for the humor in my situation. If he could find it, I sure can! This week I talk with my friend and serial guest Gab Bonesso, a Pittsburgh-based comedian, mental health advocate and children's performer about how humor has made her more resilient and how she is spreading positivity in times that can seem dark. She talks about how she lives in gratitude and is the happiest she's ever been. Nearly 398,000 Canadians have bipolar disorder, and with World Bipolar Day just passing us by on March 30th I felt it was important to shed a light on it. Yollanda Zhang has launched a Live Talk Series on “Lessons from My Bipolar Journey” to help normalize conversations about mental health challenges and reduce stigma for all. She's here to discuss mental health and World Bipolar Day, and to share her insights on how we can all play a part in preventing anyone from feeling like they have to suffer alone. It took Corinna Chong 15 years to write and release her book The Whole Animal, a collection of short stories that looks at gender roles as they relate to relationships, identity and autonomy in society. Already receiving rave reviews, Corinna joins me to share a little bit of the story behind the book. Anne Brodie is in with her regular Saturday Night at the Movies, and Gen X'ers will rejoice hearing about the return of two icons. First Kevin Bacon stars in Space Oddity directed by his wife Kyra Sedgewick and which Anne calls “a bold twist on the standard romance, with some comedic, heartwarming elements, set against a major life-changing conundrum” and next is the return of Rob Lowe in Unstable, a new series on Netflix co-created, written, and starring his son John Owen Lowe. We all love finding bargain on great clothes, but fashion, particularly fast fashion has a high cost we're not thinking about enough. The environmental and social impacts that companies like Shein, H&M, and FashionNova have on our environment are disturbing, but even more disturbing is the human toll. Karishma Porwal  is a 25 year old climate educator and activist who has been talking about everything from fast fashion to earth-friendly meal choices on her social media pages since 2020 and joins me today to share what we should all be thinking about when we get dressed each day. If you've ever owned a dog, or thought about owning one you'll definitely want to hear more about Rona Maynard's story. Rona and her husband rescued a dog Casey, and Rona quickly fell in love and noticed that just about everything around her changed with her new four legged companion. Her new book Starter Dog is available for pre-order now and Rona joins me to share a bit of the story including the prison time her dog did before he came home with her. Hey friends, Jared here. March 30th is World Bipolar Day. Here are my thoughts. I am most grateful for friends and community. Having others has helped me more than anything. From one year ago when I crashed my car and became closer with Jacob and Frank at our Celebrate Life group to church groups, pastors, leaders, nuclear family, NAMI friends, all those I have had on the podcast, roommates, and everyone else that I have met.  Do you have friends? Do you have a support system? Do you believe that God wants to provide this for you in the midst of struggle where you might feel hopeless? I believe God wants us to stay connected to others. We have to be brave in this space and take risks as we open up. Being connected and staying connected is key to grow in self-compassion and in love towards others. Bipolar has also taught me how to love myself better and how to love others better. Loren Eley is a mental health advocate and change agent, who uses her lived experience of Bipolar Affective Disorder Type 1 for good, to raise awareness, educate and inspire. Loren was a founding member of Belonging at Bauer, Bauer Media's Diversity and Inclusion forum, and works on Team Enable, the disability and mental health pillar, as well as Thrive, creating wellbeing content for staff. She represents the company in industry panels and webinars on the topics of disability and mental health, including for the Radio Academy and the All Party Parliamentary Groups for Media and Disability. Loren delivers talks on Bipolar Disorder, mental health awareness and self-care strategies for organisations. Loren has worked with Bipolar UK as an employment ambassador, assisting in workplace training, as well as having blogs and feature articles published in her role as media ambassador. On the side, Loren is a Talk for Health graduate and leads a peer support group, and she records community radio shows about self-care techniques, as well as a bespoke show for World Bipolar Day, interviewing people with lived experience and carers. Loren was diagnosed in 2012 at the age of 29 years old with Bipolar 1 after going through a phase of acute mania. With a build up lasting weeks and perhaps months that wasn't recognised at the time, working in a new job, going from working on 1 brand to over a 100 that resulted in being run down with the flu and returned to work too soon, burning the candle at both ends of the day, not sleeping properly, which culminated in writing in an entire full A4 page work book of plans for an epiphany she had had for work plans. Rapid speech , allocating herself to all tasks and transcribing a meeting at work. On return from work this escalated in to taking her clothes off to being nude at her home whilst living with her partner and also a housemate who could have walked in all night, staying up all night and believing a film crew were coming to collect her for filming with Dizzee rascall. Loren talks about the differences between hypomania and manic behaviour. A&E became her gateway to getting the help she needed, although she believed that they were going to Heathrow to meet her mum for a visit and not going to attend the hospital... We also talk about the memory gaps that can happen when we a manic and/or medicated to bring us down from a high and how this can feel when looking back, hearing from others and/or reading notes that have been taken during these periods of being unwell. Loren lives her life mostly stable, managing occasional hypomanic/manic episodes with fewer depressive episodes Please find support and resources on our website www.bipolaruk.org Insta: @bipolar_uk Twitter: bipolaruk Facebook: bipolaruk Find Loren at: Linked In Instagram Hosted by Emma Belle Insta: @emmakbelle Facebook: bellekemma www.emmakbelle.com

Join me for a conversation with Natasha Tracy, author of Lost Marbles: Insights into My Life with Depression and Bipolar and the mind behind the celebrated blog Bipolar Burble. We begin by talking about her personal journey with mental illness, including when she started experiencing symptoms, her steps to diagnosis, the process of finding treatment, and her struggle to accept psychiatry in general along the way. She also speaks about how she worked through her feelings of suicidality, the power of hope, and the coping skills she still uses to this day. We then focus on the topic of bipolar disorder more broadly, discussing the differences between Type I and Type II and hypomania vs. mania. We briefly touch on her book before Natasha educates us about the importance of the brain/mind differentiation in mental illness. And then we wrap up by trying to answer the all important question: is mental illness a chronic illness? Trigger Warning: mentions of suicide and self-harm

On World Bipolar Day, Luke Grant is joined by Rachel Green, SANE Australia CEO, who says maintaining healthy and meaningful relationships with carers, friends and family is vital for people living with bipolar disorder… a medical condition which affects the brain causing extreme mood changes.    Some people mainly experience highs. Some experience mainly lows, and some experience both extremes. Bipolar disorder affects around one in 50 people at some time in their lives.   Of the 1,912 people living with complex mental health issues surveyed through SANE Australia’s National Stigma Report Card, 95.6% said they had experienced stigma or discrimination in their relationships in the previous 12 months.   Issues included relationships with friends, family, intimate partners, or in their role as parents or caregivers.   “It is important that people living with bipolar disorder are supported by people around them, at work, at home and in the community so they can live full lives, free from stigma and discrimination,” Ms Green said.   “We want more people who live with complex mental health issues to experience support like this too.”   To learn more, and to participate in conversations about bipolar disorder with people with lived experience you can visit SANE Australia’s dedicated web page for World Bipolar Day. Launching my very own podcast has been a dream of mine for a while. And when I say a while , what I mean is over a year: my son actually bought me my microphone for Christmas 2016, and it's languished unused until now.I'll be officially launching at the end ofMarch, 2018 - just in time for World Bipolar Day and my birthday, but in the meantime, I've recorded a brief introduction with a very special invitation to take part in the podcast.I already have some great guests lined up, but if you'd like to participate, I'd love to hear from you.I'd love to interview you if you're comfortable talking about your experiences and/oryou live with mental illness (preferably professionally diagnosed) ORyou're a mental health professional with experience of mental illness ORyou care for someone with mental illness ORyour approach to mental illness falls outside traditional Western medical treatment ORyou have a story about your own experiences of mental ill-health that might be of interest to othersIf you'd like to discuss things further, and find out what participation would involve, then please do get in touch. We’ll start off with a random trivia question: What are the three sites at which U.S. space shuttles have landed? We’ll have the answer later in the show. Today is unofficially National Doctors' Day, Pencil Day and World Bipolar Day. It’s the birthday of musician Eric Clapton, who is 72; rapper MC Hammer, who is 55; and musician Tracy Chapman, who is 53. Now, we’ll spin the wheel to pick a year at random. This week in 1985, the top song in the U.S. was “One More Night” by Phil Collins. The No. 1 movie was “Friday the 13th: A New Beginning,” while the novel “If Tomorrow Comes” by Sidney Sheldon topped the New York Times Bestsellers list.  Weekly question: When did Pan Am go out of business? Submit your answer at triviapeople.com/test and we’ll add the name of the person with the first correct answer to our winner’s wall … at triviapeople.com.
