SUNDAY WIRE: EP 595 'Saint George Was a Palestinian'

This week on SUNDAY WIRE returns with host Patrick Henningsen, covering the biggest stories in the US and internationally. This week we can confirm reports that Israel has ordered Trump to resume the illegal war on Iran this week, coming at a time where the war has already wrecked the global economy. All this coming after a humiliating visit by Trump and his massive entourage to China. Also, this weekend saw two opposing demonstrations in London on the same day – the Palestinian 78th commemoration of the "Nakba" – when Israeli settlers massacred and ethnically cleansed the native Palestinian population in 1948), and Tommy Robinson's "Unite the Kingdom" anti-Muslim rally, will most of Robinson's followers adorned with the English flag with its cross of St. George symbol alongside the Israeli flag – while completely unaware that England's patron saint was in fact… a Palestinian. We'll discuss this controversial topic. Later in the Overdrive segment, we're joined by teammates Bryan "Hesher" McClain, Adam "Ruckus" Clark, and Basil Valentine for deeper comment and analysis on this week's earth-shaking geopolitical development. All this and more on this week's show. We couldn't ignore this story: President Trump's fiery Truth Social post calling Pope Leo XIV “weak on crime” and “terrible for foreign policy,” plus that weird (and quickly deleted) AI image that had everyone talking. We break down what actually happened, why the tone feels so off, and what it means for faithful Catholics who supported Trump but also love the Church. We talk respect for the Vicar of Christ, the Pope's role as the world's moral conscience (not a politician), why Catholics have to put faith first before any party, and how this whole thing reminds us not to "put our trust in princes." We also celebrate the new Chaldean Patriarch from Alqosh, Mar Paul III Nona, chat about the quiet revival happening among young Catholics, and end with some great middle eastern food and a fun “Saint or Ain't” game. What do you think we should do as Catholics when politics and faith clash like this? Featuring: Fr. Simon Esshaki, Abbot Ankido Sippo, Fr. Daniel Shaba, Fr. Nassau Coliseum, March 12, 1992 — and the second set is where the real action is. Bobby charges out of the gate with a muscular 'Saint of Circumstance' that rolls straight into a gorgeous 'Ship of Fools', with Vince's backing vocals elevating the whole thing. Then comes 'Corrina' — percolating along until Phil takes the wheel and steers them into a reprise of 'Playin' in the Band' from the night before, a rare thread connecting two consecutive shows. Drums and Space are worth the listen on their own tonight, before Phil drops the bass bombs that detonate into 'The Other One'. Jerry answers with an emotionally raw 'Stella Blue', and the set closes on a rocking 'Sugar Magnolia'. They come back for one more — a lovely 'It's All Over Now, Baby Blue', with Bruce Hornsby lending his accordion to the farewell. We often think of our emotions like a light switch—that we can be a rage monster on the freeway or rude to a chatbot, and then instantly flip the switch to 'Saint' when we walk through the front door to see our family. But neuroscience tells us a different story. Every time we practice impatience—even when we think it's harmless—we are literally wiring our brains to be unkind. Today, we're discussing the ripple effects of our private words, and how the 'neural grooves' we carve in secret eventually bleed over into the lives of the people we love most. In this searing political commentary, deep cracks in the Democratic agenda are exposed—from California to El Salvador. Despite dominating a deep-blue state, Democrats are losing ground as a new poll reveals 65% of Californians, including nearly half of Democrats, oppose trans athletes in women's sports. Meanwhile, Attorney General Aaron Frey and other party leaders dismiss safety concerns and voter sentiment, doubling down on policies Americans increasingly reject. The episode also revisits the saga of Kilmar Abrego Garcia—dubbed “Saint Kilmar”—a Salvadoran national with a violent past now championed by Democratic leaders like Senator Chris Van Hollen. The commentary mocks Van Hollen's bizarre attempt to gain access to a foreign prison, highlighting a growing trend: erasing the distinction between citizens and non-citizens. Polls show a rising number of Americans—56%, according to CNN—now support deporting all illegal immigrants, a major shift from 2016. Tying it all together, the narrative criticizes figures like Letitia James for perceived hypocrisy and a justice system riddled with selective enforcement. With fiery delivery and biting satire, this episode paints a picture of a party out of touch with its base—and with reality.

Saint X star Josh Bonzie revisited the podcast to discuss his hit from Hulu called Saint X. Bonzie had previously been on the podcast to discuss what fans could expect when Saint X was released on Hulu. Now that all of the episodes are out, Bonzie and I really got into some of the significant issues the show addresses regarding race, assumptions, stereotypes, discrimination, and how all of this can stem from one incident in your life. Bonzie plays Clive "Gogo" Richardson, who works at a fancy resort when a young attractive white woman goes missing and is ultimately found dead. For the rest of his life, Gogo has to face the repercussions of that one incident. If you haven't seen the show, I would recommend watching all of it before listening to this podcast because spoilers are ahead. But it was fascinating to hear from Bonzie again and really break down how fast your entire life can change with something entirely out of your hands and how this happens to various targeted communities all the time. Host: Monica Gleberman Editor: Ashley Pelletier Social Media Graphic: Jojo -- Synopsis: The series, which is told via multiple timelines, explores, and upends the girl gone-missing genre as it explores how a young woman's mysterious death during an idyllic Caribbean vacation creates a traumatic ripple effect that eventually pulls her surviving sister into a dangerous pursuit of the truth.   The 8-episode series is adapted from Alexis Schaitkin's novel. We sat down with Leila Gerstein (executive producer), Josh Bonzie, Alycia Debnam-Carey, West Duchovny, Jayden Elijah, Michael Park, and Betsy Brandt to discuss their latest thriller to hit on Hulu called 'Saint X.' All of the actors spoke about the importance of this show and how some of your initial judgments going into the first episode might say more about you than it does the characters you are watching. While the show is full of constant twists and turns (going back and forth from the past to the present), it also regularly addresses serious issues, including stereotypes, racism, sexuality, media attention, tragedy, and more. While the show is heavy, there are lessons to learn from it. All of the actors spoke about how they worked on their characters, who made them better, how they got through some of the more challenging scenes, and what they did to lighten the mood while on set. A fine second set from Boston Garden on May 12, 1980 to send you off on your Memorial Day weekend adventures. This one starts with an excellent 'Feel Like a Stranger', followed by an intense 'Ship of Fools'. A rolling 'Estimated Prophet' and 'He's Gone' follows, but then the band dissolves into a unique and interesting 'Caution' jam for about 10 minutes, for me the highlight of the set. Drums follows, then a 'Saint of Circumstance' which flows into the 'Wharf Rat' in the ballad slot. 'Sugar Magnolia' closes the set which they then follow with a 'US Blues' encore.  Grateful Dead Boston Garden Boston, MA 5/12/1980 - Monday      Two      Feel Like A Stranger [8:12] ; Ship Of Fools [8:06] ; Estimated Prophet[11:21] > He's Gone (1) [21:35] > Drums [9:19] > Space [2:03] > Saint Of Circumstance [5:24] > Wharf Rat [8:54] > Sugar Magnolia [7:41] Encore      U.S. Blues [4:56] (1) He's Gone [11:35] > Caution Jam [10:00]  You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod052722.mp3  Thank you for your support of the Deadpod. Liverpool are mourning the loss of a genuine Reds legend today after the passing of Ian St John at the age of 82. St John joined Liverpool from Motherwell in 1961 and went on to play 425 games for Bill Shankly's side, scoring 118 goals across a decade of service during one of the great Anfield eras. As well as winning two top-flight league titles, St John scored the decisive goal in Liverpool’s first-ever FA Cup victory in 1965. Matt Addison is joined by the Liverpool ECHO's head of sport, David Prentice, to pay tribute to the impact that St John made on Liverpool FC as heartfelt tributes pour in. They also take a look at his media career, with 'Saint and Greavsie', in which he co-starred alongside Jimmy Greaves, one of the pioneering football shows of the 1980s and 1990s, as well as St John's radio appearances, including on Liverpool station Radio City alongside Everton hero Ian Snodin.Watch and subscribe to our Blood Red videos on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/BloodRedLiverpoolFCJoin our Blood Red podcast group on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1656599847979758/

This week we go back 30 years to the band's second set at McNichols Arena in Denver Colorado on December 13, 1990.  I'm always a fan of a Help>Slip>Frank opener and here it heralds a fine show. A latter day 'Saint of Circumstance' is followed by a nice 'Eyes of the World' which opens up nicely towards the end as it goes into Drums and Space. The highlight of the set is the fine 'Other One' that comes post-drums and leads into 'Morning Dew'.  Phil steps in after that with a great 'Box of Rain' to close the set, and the boys return for a 'US Blues' encore.   Grateful Dead McNichols Arena Denver, CO 12/13/90 - Thursday Two      Help On The Way > Slipknot! > Franklin's Tower ; Saint Of Circumstance ; Eyes Of The World > Drums > Space > The Other One > Morning Dew ; Box Of Rain Encore     U.S. Blues   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod121120.mp3   Kind thanks for listening, and for your generous support.
