Show #872   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 20th August 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   PORSCHE TAYCAN TO FEATURE PLUG&CHARGE AND DOWNLOADABLE UPGRADES "Starting in October, there will be numerous innovations for the Porsche Taycan at the change of the model year. The new Plug & Charge function allows for automated charging and payment without a card or app. Other innovations include Functions on Demand, FoD, and faster acceleration. Physical changes include a colour head-up display and an on-board charger with a charging capacity of up to 22 kW. " says electrive: "Plug-and-Charge based on ISO standard 15118 enables the charging process to start automatically. So far, Plug & Charge is already operational at Ionity charging stations in Germany, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Italy and the Czech Republic. Twelve more European countries will follow at the start of 2021, according to Porsche. In the US and Canada, Plug & Charge will also be available from Electrify America and Electrify Canada at “many charging points” as of the start of 2021. Drivers may choose to subscribe or else opt-in for certain functions online. Other new FoDs include automated driving features such as Active Lane Keep Assist that keeps the vehicle in the centre of the lane with continuous steering intervention. InnoDrive adapts the speed to the conditions ahead. Both functions are available for a fee of 19.50 euro per month or 808.10 euro each as a purchase option. "   And as per Autocar: "Also new for the 2021 model year is a battery preservation function that restricts charging capacity where appropriate to reduce power loss. At an 800v Ionity rapid-charging station, for example, drivers can slow the charging speed from 270kW to around 200kW using a new charging mode selector on the central display.  The Taycan can also now be specified with a power guard function, which prevents a system overload when charging domestically and allows for it to be charged using excess electricity generated by a building’s solar panels. That, combined with the fast-charging ability of being able to accept over 300 kW of power, will make the Air an excellent choice for long road trips." says InsideEVs: "The Lucid has the best of both worlds. It can charge at the highest rate of any EV, and it is also one of the most efficient EVs. That combination makes it the fastest-charging EV, as it can recharge at a rate of roughly 20 miles of range per minute of charging. Lucid's extraordinarily high charging rate is possible because of its 900V electrical architecture, including custom lithium-ion battery cells, a highly sophisticated battery (BMS), and thermal management system (TMS), as well as the Lucid Air’s powertrain efficiency. As for AC charging, Lucid is also pushing the limits and is equipping the Air with a 19.2 kW onboard charger which can replenish 80 miles of range per hour."   https://insideevs.com/news/439835/lucid-air-fastest-charging-ev/   LUCID AIR WILL OFFER VEHICLE TO GRID POWER "The company is also developing a home charger that it claims will be “the first AC charging stations with bi-directional charging ever offered.” Most EV chargers are unidirectional, meaning electricity flows from the electrical grid to the vehicle. Lucid claims its chargers will flow two ways, thus bidirectional. This will allow customers to use their Lucid Air to power their homes or “off-grid vacation properties,” Lucid Motors said." says The Verge.   https://www.theverge.com/2020/8/19/21375308/lucid-motors-air-ev-charging-time-miles-minutes   PANASONIC TO INVEST $100M IN EV BATTERY PLANT IN US FOR TESLA. "Panasonic will boost production capacity of batteries for Tesla next year in an investment expected to exceed $100 million, Nikkei learned on Wednesday." writes Nikkei today: "The investment will be made in Gigafactory 1, a battery plant in the U.S. state of Nevada with 13 production lines. Panasonic will add another line, increasing capacity by 10% to 39 gigawatt-hours per year. This is the first capacity expansion at Gigafactory since it opened in 2017. Panasonic is also upgrading the batteries being produced at Gigafactory, raising each battery's storage capacity by 5%, starting in September. With annual production capacity set to exceed 1 million vehicles next year, the capacity for battery production is also likely to increase, Panasonic officials say."   https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Automobiles/Panasonic-to-invest-100m-in-EV-battery-plant-in-US-for-Tesla   POLESTAR CONFIRMS WESTFIELD LONDON AS ITS FIRST UK SPACE "Polestar has announced the location of its first UK Space, located in Westfield London. Also known as Westfield White City or Westfield Shepherds Bush, the largest shopping centre in Europe was an obvious choice of location for the growing Swedish electric performance brand." according to Conceptcarz.com: "The Westfield Space is situated at the heart of where people go to shop and relax, for a seamless and hassle-free customer journey. Minimalist design and integrated digital interactivity ensure the product remains the focus. Non-commissioned Polestar Specialists are there to inform consumers about the brand and its products before moving to the brand's website to order their car directly from the Swedish manufacturer"   https://www.conceptcarz.com/a38409/polestar-westfield-london-uk.aspx   SECOND PLUG-IN HYBRID JOINS VOLVO XC40 LINE-UP "Arriving ahead of the early 2021 launch of the fully electric XC40, the new XC40 Recharge Plug-in Hybrid T4 joins the existing Recharge Plug-in Hybrid T5. The T4 plug-in hybrid brings a lower-powered and priced alternative to the T5, opening up plug-in hybrid technology to a wider market. It uses a 129hp 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine and an 82hp electric motor with seven-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. The 10.7kWh rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides an all-electric range of up to 27 miles" reports Fleet World: "Its sub-£40,000 price tag also means the Recharge Plug-in Hybrid T4 avoids the £325 Vehicle Excise Duty surcharge. It’s available in R-Design and Inscription equipment grades, priced from £39,130 on the road and starts first deliveries to UK customers from October 2020."   https://fleetworld.co.uk/second-plug-in-hybrid-joins-volvo-xc40-line-up-as-diesels-exit/   VOLVO CUTS PRICES ON PLUG-IN HYBRID LINEUP ". According to an early order guide, prices for 2021 Recharge T8 plug-in hybrids can be up to $7,750 cheaper than 2020 models. The most significant price change is found on the S60 T8 sedan as a new entry-level model is available starting at $48,645 (including destination) which is $7,750 less than the 2020 entry-level model. " writes Carsdirect.com: "Given that the price cut is only on the PHEV models, this moves the price point much closer to the T5 and T6 gasoline versions. In the case of the S60, the R-Design Expression (the new entry-level plug-in hybrid model) is available as low as $43,226 after accounting for the federal tax credit. That’s $19 less than the cheapest T6 Momentum AWD model which starts at $43,245. For all eligible models, the tax credit equates to $5,419."   https://www.carsdirect.com/automotive-news/volvo-cuts-prices-on-plug-in-hybrid-lineup   HAWAIIAN ELECTRIC DEBUTS FAST ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGER IN PUKALANI   Firstly thanks to Jim Burness from NationCarCharging.com, yesterday I asked what CHP stood for, and Jim kindly informed me: California Highway Patrol! "Electric vehicle drivers can now power up at a newly installed Hawaiian Electric fast charging station at the Pukalani Terrace Center in Upcountry Maui." says Hawaiian Electric: "This publicly-accessible DC fast charger owned and operated by Hawaiian Electric offers a new lower rate during daytime hours to encourage charging when solar energy is typically abundant. The company expects to install new fast chargers with the EV-Maui rate at three additional locations in Central, South, and West Maui later this year once site agreements are confirmed."   https://www.hawaiianelectric.com/hawaiian-electric-debuts-fast-electric-vehicle-charger-in-pukalani   “RUSSIA HAS CREATED THE CHEAPEST ELECTRIC CAR IN THE WORLD” – ZETTA CM1 "As reported by the spanish newspaper La Vanguardia, Russia has created the cheapest electric car in the world. The new electric car Zetta CM1 will be released at the end of the year with a price tag of approximately €5200. The vehicle has been developed by Russian Engineering and Manufacturing Company (REMC)." says RusAutoNews.com. 27hp hub motors on each wheel. 120kmh. 10kWh battery.   http://rusautonews.com/2020/08/18/russia-has-created-the-cheapest-electric-car-in-the-world-zetta-cm1/   GERMAN STATE REQUIRES SOLAR PANELS ON NEW, NON-RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS "many buildings get constructed with no thought for rooftop solar. The German state of Baden-Württemberg is changing that in its jurisdiction. It is requiring that all new non-residential buildings have solar panels on them starting in 2022" says CleanTechnica: "This follows the city-state of Hamburg passing a similar law that goes into effect a year later, in 2023. As a new building is built, everyone must take into account that it has solar panels on top, just as we have to take into account that a new building will have a roof and walls, just as we expect that a new building will be hooked up to the electric grid."   https://cleantechnica.com/2020/08/18/german-state-requires-solar-panels-on-new-non-residential-buildings/   UK TO REMAIN WITH EU CO2 EMISSION REGULATIONS "It is looking like the UK is to remain with EU regulation on CO2 emission standards even after leaving the European Union at the end of this year. A new consultation points out as much and is open for comments until 21 August." according to electrive: "When made into legislation as proposed, the UK will keep the EU’s 15% CO2 emission reduction target for cars and vans from 2025, and a 37.5% reduction for cars and 31% for vans come 2030. Carmakers will face fines of 86 British pounds instead of 95 euros for every gram of CO2 exceeded. The limit is 95 grams per km, and manufacturers will still base their targets on the average weight of vehicles sold."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/08/19/uk-to-remain-with-eu-co2-emission-regulations/   You can listen to all 871 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically.   It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast.   And  if you have an Amazon Echo, download our Alexa Skill, search for EV News Daily and add it as a flash briefing.   Come and say hi on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter just search EV News Daily, have a wonderful day, I’ll catch you tomorrow and remember…there’s no such thing as a self-charging hybrid.     PHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE (PREMIUM PARTNER) BRAD CROSBY (PREMIUM PARTNER) AVID TECHNOLOGY (PREMIUM PARTNER) PORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATI (PREMIUM PARTNER) AUDI CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) NATIONALCARCHARGING.COM and ALOHACHARGE.COM  (PREMIUM PARTNER) DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNEL (PREMIUM PARTNER)   DAVID AND LISA ALLEN (PARTNER) OEM AUDIO OF NEW ZEALAND AND EVPOWER.CO.NZ (PARTNER) GARETH HAMER eMOBILITY NORWAY HTTPS://WWW.EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM/  (PARTNER) BOB BOOTHBY – MILLBROOK COTTAGES AND ELOPEMENT WEDDING VENUE (PARTNER) DARIN MCLESKEY (PARTNER)   ALAN ROBSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALAN SHEDD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEX BANAHENE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEXANDER FRANK @ https://www.youtube.com/c/alexsuniverse42 ANDERS HOVE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREA JEFFERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASEER KHALID (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASHLEY HILL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BÅRD FJUKSTAD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRENT KINGSFORD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRIAN THOMPSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRUCE BOHANNAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHARLES HALL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRIS HOPKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) COLIN HENNESSY AND CAMBSEV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG COLES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG ROGERS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAMIEN DAVIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DARREN FEATCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVE DEWSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID FINCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID MOORE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PARTINGTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PRESCOTT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DON MCALLISTER / SCREENCASTSONLINE.COM (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERU KYEYUNE-NYOMBI (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) FREDRIK ROVIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GENE RUBIN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GILBERTO ROSADO (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GEOFF LOWE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEDLEY WRIGHT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN GRIFFITHS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN SEAR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN (WATTIE) WATKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JACK OAKLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAMES STORR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JIM MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODICERS) JOHN C SOLAR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON AKA BEARDY MCBEARDFACE FROM KENT EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON MANCHAK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JUAN GONZALEZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEN MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEVIN MEYERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KYLE MAHAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LARS DAHLAGER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LAURENCE D ALLEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LEE BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LUKE CULLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARCEL WARD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARK BOSSERT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARTY YOUNG  (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MATT PISCIONE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIA OPPELSTRUP (PARTNER) MICHAEL PASTRONE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIKE WINTER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHAN GORE-BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NEIL E ROBERTS FROM SUSSEX EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NIGEL MILES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) OHAD ASTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PAUL RIDINGS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER)                 PAUL STEPHENSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GLASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GORTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETER & DEE ROBERTS FROM OXON EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER)  PHIL MOUCHET (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHILIP TRAUTMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RAJ BADWAL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RAJEEV NARAYAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENE KEEMIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENÉ SCHNEIDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RICHARD LUPINSKY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB HERMANS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB FROM THE RSTHINKS EV CHANNEL ON YOUTUBE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RUPERT MITCHELL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) SEIKI PAYNE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEPHEN PENN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEVE JOHN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) THOMAS J. Show #837   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 12th June 2020. Welcome to a new Patreon PRODUCER LUC JOLLY   TESLA MODEL S AND MODEL X SPECIFICATIONS REVEAL 250 KW BOOST RATE "Tesla has updated the specifications of the S and X models to include a maximum boost rate of 250 kW or a charge rate of 1,000 miles per hour. Updates to the S and X models website align the load capacities of its flagship vehicles with those of the 3 and Y models." reports FR24news: Tesla recently increased the S and X models’ boost rate from 200 kW to 225 kW as part of software update 2020.24.6, before that, Model 3 and Model Y were the only vehicles in the company’s lineup that could take advantage of the 250 kW higher power of the V3 Superchargers. Tesla cites the improved preconditioning of the battery as a reason for the higher charge rate."   That was for the most recently built version of the Model S and X. But now it's up again from 225kW to 250kW. It's unclear what cars will take 250kW, whether it's the existing fleet or only cars sold from today.   Tesla: “Your car is now able to charge V3 Superchargers at peak rates of up to 225 kW. As usual, when you access a Supercharger, your car conditions its battery during the journey, so that it can charge more quickly. ”   And from Elon on Twitter, Tesla had to “increase some wire thicknesses in S/X to reduce resistive heating” in order to achieve the 250 kW charge speeds. So not the cells but the hardware in the car.   Many people point out the form factor difference in cells between S&X and 3&Y by forget that Tesla has improved the chemistry being used in the S&X cells to ensure they don't degrade as much when charging so quickly. Good news too for them being seen as the premium cars. It's also about safety and guaranteeing their products.   But how long will it hit 250kW for? And also it depends on how long it holds onto 250kW for...even if you ever hit that you have to be at a low state of charge and probably have navigated to the charger so it pre-conditions the temperature of the battery.   From a Car & Driver article in April: "We took our long-term 2019 Tesla Model 3 to a 250-kW Supercharger and a 150-kW Supercharger to test the difference. The 250-kW unit only saved approximately two minutes on comparable charges from 3 to 100 percent battery. the 250-kW charger only beats the lesser one in the range between about 10 percent and 50 percent state of charge, where all of the two-minute gain we saw over the entire charge was realized. Above that, the two closely follow the same path as the power necessarily tapers off as the battery level increases.  The overall charge time at the 250-kW Supercharger was one hour and six minutes, saving us two minutes over the 150-kW charger, which filled our battery from three to 100 percent in one hour and eight minutes."   https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a32132062/tesla-250-kw-vs-150-kw-supercharger-tested/   TESLA INCREASES MODEL Y PERFORMANCE RANGE TO 291 MILES "Tesla has increased the range of the Model Y Performance from an EPA-rated 280 miles to 291 miles when equipped with the factory 21-inch Überturbine wheels.  The range boost represents an approximate 3.9% increase despite the vehicle having no noticeable hardware differences, according to the description outlined on Tesla’s Model Y online configurator. Model Y Long Range retains its 316-mile rating." says Teslarati: "Model Y Performance is currently offered with only the heavyset 21″ Überturbine wheels, which tips the scale at a whopping 65 lbs (29 kg) each. The heavy rotational mass is the main culprit for the decrease in range over the  20″ Induction wheels that Tesla briefly offered for Performance buyers." On the Model Y Long Range you can choose the 19" Gemini Wheels which are included, or the 20" Induction wheels for $2,000.   So it now has an extra 11 miles of official range, for $3,000 less.   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-y-range-21-in-uberturbine-wheels/   DELTA LAUNCHES 200KW ULTRA FAST ELECTRIC VEHICLE (EV) CHARGER Delta, a global leader in power and thermal management solutions, today announced the launch of its next-generation 200kW Ultra Fast Charger (UFC200) in the Europe, Middle East & Africa (EMEA) region. Delta's UFC200, which is capable of enabling a 100km driving range with roughly 8 minutes of charging, aims to serve next-generation EVs, e-trucks and e-buses in a broad range of applications such as highways, parking lots, service stations, logistics companies as well as urban traffic hubs. The UFC200 is also meeting the EV owner's demands for quick and easy charging, realised by its 200kW capacity, which can be split in 2 x 100kW to enable two EVs to be charged simultaneously via the innovative non-liquid cooled 400A high power CCS cable/connector system. This temperature controlled high power connector system can supply extra power when the EV's battery system is at low charge without oversizing the system. In extreme environments and very frequent usage, the power will be automatically reduced to keep the cable/connector temperature in a safe range for the user.   https://finance.yahoo.com/news/delta-launches-200kw-ultra-fast-083000525.html   E-SCOOTER TRIALS COULD SEE THE UK MOVE BEYOND EU RULES "As the UK fast-tracks the e-scooter trials, the new regulation just being tested could lead to a more generous classification of light electric vehicles than applied across the EU. It could see not only e-scooters but also light electric mopeds without type-approval being allowed." says electrive in a special report today: "Where European capitals have long since introduced the light electric vehicles and already been through the inevitable trials necessary to initiate usage that was acceptable for other street users and residents, the Isles had banned the electric kick scooters from its roads. The government speeding up the e-kick-scooter trial process by a year and widening it to the entire country. However, for the time being, the e-scooters should continue to be categorized as motor vehicles, the trial period will be used to investigate whether they should have the same legal status as EPACs permanently. So, for now, users must have a motor vehicle insurance and at least an AM driving license"   https://www.electrive.com/2020/07/12/e-scooter-trials-could-see-the-uk-move-beyond-eu-rules/   25 HIGH CAPACITY HYDROGEN STATIONS TO CONNECT THE NETHERLANDS, BELGIUM, AND WEST GERMANY Air Liquide and the Port of Rotterdam Authority announce the launch of a jointly created initiative, which aims at enabling 1,000 hydrogen-powered zero-emission trucks on the roads connecting the Netherlands, Belgium, and West Germany by 2025. In order to have 1,000 Hydrogen-powered trucks on the road, out of which 500 are expected to be based in the Port of Rotterdam area, the related infrastructure needs to be developed and deployed, which envisages 25 high capacity hydrogen stations to connect the Netherlands, Belgium, and West Germany. The project also aims to include the necessary electrolysis capacity to produce low carbon hydrogen. The companies represented in the initiative will jointly perform the feasibility study of this whole value chain.   https://www.portofrotterdam.com/en/news-and-press-releases/air-liquide-and-port-of-rotterdam-authority-hydrogen-road-transport   COBALT-FREE LFP BATTERIES ARE GAINING TRACTION "Until recently LFP battery packs were mostly used in electric buses, since this kind of vehicles don’t require very energy dense batteries to be eligible for government subsidies in China. However, recent energy density increases in LFP battery packs made possible that passenger electric cars can also use this kind of cobalt-free batteries and still be eligible for government subsidies." says PushEVs: "Now that extremely popular newcomers such as the Tesla Model 3 SR+ MIC (Made in China) and the BYD Han EV arrived with LFP batteries, a production boost in this battery chemistry was inevitable. Anyway, this is just starting. I think that next year the rise of LFP batteries usage could be exponential, for at least three reasons: BYD invades Europe,  Tesla Model C, CATL battery cell plant in Germany Summing up, good cobalt-free batteries are already available and they make possible for electric cars to compete in price and availability with ICE cars"   Read more from Pedro here: https://pushevs.com/2020/07/11/cobalt-free-lfp-batteries-are-gaining-traction/   [mention for Premium Partners]   You can listen to all 836 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. PHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE (PREMIUM PARTNER) BRAD CROSBY (PREMIUM PARTNER) AVID TECHNOLOGY (PREMIUM PARTNER) BRIGHTSMITHGROUP.COM – FOR CLEANTECH TALENT (PREMIUM PARTNER) PORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATI (PREMIUM PARTNER) AUDI CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) NEW! DYSON FINALLY UNVEILS ITS CANCELED ELECTRIC CAR "Having famously killed off its electric car project back in October, Dyson’s automobile remained a mystery to most, with insiders telling Engadget that only a handful of engineers had seen a working prototype somewhere in Wiltshire. But yesterday, the company chose to finally show off its scrapped electric car for an interview about Sir James Dyson — now worth £16.2 billion — topping the Sunday Times Rich List for the first time." writes Engadget.com: "According to The Times, Dyson revealed that his electric vehicle, codenamed “N526,” would have been a seven-seater with a whopping 600-mile range per charge. This was largely thanks to the company’s proprietary solid-state batteries, which could apparently sustain such performance. Despite its 2.6-ton weight, Dyson’s aluminum car could go from zero to 62MPH in 4.8 seconds (about half a second more than the long-range Model X), with its top speed apparently reaching 125MPH (30MPH shy of the Model X’s). This is all coming from the twin 200kW electric motors rated with 536BHP. As the owner of the company, Dyson told The Times that this project ended up costing £500 million of his own money before he put a stop to it. "   https://www.engadget.com/dysons-electric-car-n526-085341772.html   KOENIGSEGG REGERA’S BATTERY COSTS 100 TIMES MORE THAN A REGULAR EV BATTERY "The Koenigsegg Regera’s batteries are designed to deliver uncompromising performance. It doesn’t come cheap. In fact, according to Jonas Voss, Director, EV Propulsion Systems, the Regera’s battery costs 100 times more than a regular battery pack you would find in an EV. Similar cells are used in modern Formula 1 cars." says TheSupercarBlog.com: "Koenigsegg sources the special batteries from Rimac. Apparently, these are cells are so specialized that even Rimac doesn’t use it the C_Two electric hypercar. There are 6 modules of 64 cells inside the carbon fibre housing. It is mounted in the centre of the car in order to keep the centre of gravity low. The batteries alone generate around 700 hp.The Regera also uses a twin-turbo V8 engine and three electric motors. The combined output of the hybrid system is 1500 hp and 1500 lb-ft of torque, which enables the car to hit 0-400 km/h in less than 20 seconds."   https://www.thesupercarblog.com/koenigsegg-regeras-battery-costs-100-times-more-than-a-regular-ev-battery/   TESLA UPDATES MODEL Y AND MODEL 3 DELIVERY TIMELINE "Tesla has updated Model Y and Model 3 delivery timelines after restarting production at Fremont factory. The automaker is now listing 5 to 7 weeks delivery time for new Model 3 orders in the US:" reckons electrek: "Prior to the factory shutdown, Tesla was listing 4 to 8 weeks for new Model 3 deliveries in the US. As for the Model Y, new buyers of the electric SUV are going to have to wait a little longer before getting the vehicle. Tesla updated the Model Y delivery timeline with a new 8 to 12 weeks lead time."   https://electrek.co/2020/05/16/tesla-updates-model-y-3-delivery-timeline/   HOW TESLA MADE ITS BATTERY BREAKTHROUGHS IN A TINY CANADIAN LAB "After conducting battery research for 3M and Medtronic, Dahn signed a research partnership with Tesla in 2015 that runs through mid-2021. Tesla hired Dahn’s students and graduates and built connections to a small battery testing facility in Halifax in 2015, that was spun out of Dahn’s lab at Dalhousie." says iphoneincanada: "Tesla also set up its own battery research lab in Halifax that same year. A former PhD student of Dahn’s, Chris Burns, helped Tesla build its Halifax facility. Tesla’s funding of Dahn’s work is public, and Dahn has talked about some of his group’s accomplishments at public and private forums, including a presentation in February at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. Videos of that presentation and at least two others where Dahn discussed his work were posted on YouTube, but since have been removed. Dahn’s team is now playing a key role in Tesla’s plans to introduce a new low-cost, long-life ‘million mile’ battery in its Model 3 sedan in China, which will bring the cost of electric vehicles in line with gasoline models."   https://www.iphoneincanada.ca/tesla/tesla-battery-development-in-canadian-lab/   NEW FORD EXPLORER PLUG-IN HYBRID NOW BEING DELIVERED TO EUROPEAN CUSTOMERS THE ALL-NEW FORD Explorer Plug-In Hybrid – featuring electric driving, first-class comfort and true tough terrain capability – is now being delivered to customers across Europe, following the seven-seater SUV going on sale late last year. The Explorer Plug-In Hybrid combines Ford’s powerful 3.0-litre EcoBoost V6 petrol engine with an electric motor, generator and 13.6 kWh lithium-ion battery. Equipped with Ford’s 10-speed automatic transmission, Intelligent All-Wheel Drive and Terrain Management System with seven Drive Modes, the advanced powertrain delivers the ability to carry seven passengers in refined comfort, tow up to 2,500 kg, and enables 48 km NEDC (42 km WLTP) electric driving rang.  The Explorer Plug-In Hybrid is one of 18 new electrified vehicles Ford is introducing for customers in Europe before the end of 2021.   OCTOPUS ENERGY CREATES ROAMING CHARGING SERVICE IN UK AND EUROPE "Octopus Energy Group has launched a new roaming charging service, enabling electric car drivers to access multiple charging networks with a single account. The Electric Juice Network scheme can be used by any electric car driver – including non-Octopus Energy’ customers – and initially provides access to urban charging points through the Char.gy network, but with other partners to follow. This includes expansion into Europe." says FleetWorld: "Charging costs for all users are invoiced through a single bill – providing a solution to the long-standing issue of a lack of standardised payment measures. The launch of the new roaming service follows Octopus Energy’s work last year to deliver time-of-use tariffs and smart analytics to charging companies across the UK and will soon be supported by the Electric Juice app, which will also enable drivers across Europe to take advantage of the same service."   https://fleetworld.co.uk/octopus-energy-creates-roaming-charging-service-in-uk-and-europe/   NISSAN LAUNCHES ALL-NEW KICKS E-POWER IN THAILAND "The Nissan Kicks e-POWER, an all-new compact SUV that gives drivers the power and performance of an electric car, debuted today in Thailand. This is a Nissan regional launch event, and the world-debut of the new Nissan model: Nissan Kicks e-POWER." reports Automotiveworld: "Equipped with e-POWER, the revolutionary electrified powertrain first introduced by Nissan in Japan, the new Nissan Kicks is built in Thailand and perfectly tailored for the lifestyles of urban customers. Nissan’s award-winning e-POWER technology brings a fully electric motor drive, meaning that the wheels are completely driven by the electric motor. The power from a high-output battery is delivered to the e-POWER compact powertrain comprising a gasoline engine, power generator, inverter and a motor." The all-new Nissan Kicks e-POWER technology features an EM57 electric motor, generator and inverter that generates electricity from its 1.2 liters DOHC 12-valve three-cylinder engine. The e-POWER system offers a maximum power of 95 kilowatts (kW) (129 PS), a maximum flat-torque of 260 Nm, and a lithium-ion battery—all delivering a driving experience similar to an EV. The 1.57 kWh lithium-ion battery in the all-new Nissan Kicks  e-POWER has four modules that provide smooth acceleration, quiet rides, and increased fuel efficiency."   QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERS   RAJEEV NARAYAN Here in Texas, I have used Plug-share, which seems to have a reasonable coverage map and can give you turn by turn directions and a trip planner which seems to work. It can also filter by type of charger. The problem for me is that in my area at least, there is no real guarantee the charger you pull up to will work.   DOUG VOWLES I exclusively use A Better Route Planner.  It allows you to enter the specific model of EV you’re driving, and then you can tailor trip parameters to include outside temperature, wind, road conditions etc. The program also knows road elevations. We made several trips beyond the range of level 2 and 3 chargers in the dead of winter, and ABRP let us anticipate the need for and use overnight 110 volt charging to make it back to “civilization.” Highly recommended.   JEFFREY MURRAY My wife and I have a 2019 Chevy Bolt that we bought new in October and we already have over 20k miles on it, including multiple long distance road trips in the middle of winter (we bought it going into the worst case scenario for an EV, so now summer should be a pleasant surprise). My prefered route planner overall has been Plugshare, as it seems to have the most complete database of chargers here in the Indiana, USA area. I also use abetterrouteplanner.com since it has a lot of customizations to the car, how much weight, weather, etc. I will often take the charge stops that it finds and put them into plugshare since I find it easier to follow in the car.       QUESTION OF THE WEEK   Should Dyson have continued to make a £150,000 EV, or should we only make EVs realistic? What’s wrong with making cars at a high price point?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 230 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #623   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 27th October 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Hi to Jon: “Hi, you've been talking alot about how ev's wil be more available after 01.01.20, this seems to be very true! All of the people who have ordered a e tron 50 in Norway have been told that the car has been delayed because of the test date for wltp has been poursponed from week 45 to week 49 insuring that no etron 50's get delivered untill after new year. Probably just to get a lesser c02 penalty next year. Cheap move by Audi since there are 50's that have already come off the assembly line. My order entered production earlier this week.”          Thank you to LEE BROWN for becoming an EXECUTIVE PRODUCER. And thank you to CHARLES FOX for becoming a PRODUCER.   TESLA SOLAR ROOF V3 REAL QUOTE SHOWS PRICE DROPPED BY 40% "Electrek obtained an updated Tesla Solar Roof quote from V2 to V3, and it shows that the price of the solar roof tiles went down by as much as 40% with the new generation." says Fred at Electrek today talking about one of their readers: "For a 9.45 kW system on a 1,862-square-foot roof, Tesla was charging him $64,634 for the solar roof, along with $10,050 for a Powerwall, and another $10,630 for roof and site repairs. That’s a total of just over $85,000 all in. The homeowner ended up not ordering the system, but Tesla has now updated the quote following the launch of Solar Roof V3, and it’s now much cheaper. Tesla is now listing the same solar roof system at $38,266 instead of $64,634 — a 40% reduction in price — and the total is down to $54,866:"   https://electrek.co/2019/10/27/tesla-solar-roof-v3-quote-price-decrease/   BORGWARNER EV TECH SHOWS UP IN ARIEL NOMAD EV DEMONSTRATOR VEHICLE BorgWarner, a company engaged in electrification on various fronts, unveiled an interesting new electric demonstration vehicle, which happens to be a high-voltage buggy. Meet the Ariel Nomad EV, an Ariel Nomad converted to all-electric drive" reports InsideEVs: "The Ariel Nomad EV is equipped with two High-Voltage Hairpin (HVH) 250 electric motors and eGearDrive gear sets (each one independently controlling a rear wheel) and a 30 kWh battery pack."   BorgWarner says: ""A benefit of the vehicle’s electrified powertrain is its improved steering response made possible through torque vectoring. This feature allows both forward motion and regenerative braking, delivering a dynamic and controllable driving experience. Another key technology is BorgWarner’s thermal-management system, which circulates coolant via an electric pump through the inverters and battery pack. The liquid-cooled, 350V 30kWh pack delivers peak power of 200kW."   https://insideevs.com/news/378600/borgwarner-ariel-nomad-ev-demonstrator/   FIRST ALL-ELECTRIC LEXUS TO LAUNCH IN 2020 "Toyota Motor’s (7203.T) Lexus will launch its first all-battery electric vehicle next year, as the luxury brand races to market a battery-operated car amid growing competition to develop zero-emissions vehicles, the head of the brand said on Wednesday." according to a Reuters article: "At the unveiling of a concept model of a futuristic EV hatchback ahead of the Tokyo Motor Show, he added that the goal is for sales of Lexus electric vehicles, including battery electrics and gasoline hybrids, to outpace sales of the luxury brand’s gasoline vehicle models by 2025."   https://www.reuters.com/article/us-autoshow-tokyo-lexus/toyotas-luxury-lexus-brand-plans-battery-ev-launch-in-2020-idUSKBN1X20FX   TESLA MODEL Y BASHED BY AUTO VETERAN "The Tesla Model Y is expected to be the company’s highest-volume vehicle yet, with Elon Musk noting during the recently-held third-quarter earnings call that he expects the crossover to outsell Model S, Model X, and Model 3 combined. Former GM vice chair Bob Lutz, on the other hand, has some doubts, and a lot of that has to do with the way the Model Y looks." says Simon at Teslarati.   Lutz: "The Model 3 continues to sell well. But the Model Y, I think it’s terminally ugly. I don’t know who’s gonna buy that. It’s another one of these humpback things like the Model X. It’s neither a sport utility nor a sedan, and to the extent it sells, I don’t think it’s going to break into a new segment. I think the sales will be largely substitutional to the Model 3"   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-y-ugly-bob-lutz-video/   NSW UNVEILS PLAN TO SWITCH SYDNEY’S 8,000 BUSES TO ALL-ELECTRIC "The NSW Government is seeking proposals to shift Sydney’s entire 8,000 strong bus fleet to an all-electric fleet in a landmark decision that marks one of the first tangible policies towards the state’s goal of reaching zero net emissions by 2050." according to thedriven.io: "NSW transport minister Andrew Constance says he will seek new contracts for the supply and operation of Sydney’s public bus system, a move that will open the door to electric buses and substantially reduce the environmental footprint of Sydney’s public transport network. Successful electric bus shuttle services have already been in operation at the Sydney and Brisbane airports, which confirmed the cost and reliability benefits of electric buses over traditional diesel buses. Electric buses represent an enormous potential for reducing the environmental footprint of the Australian transport sector, as well as providing a boost to Australia’s fledgling manufacturing sector."   https://thedriven.io/2019/10/28/nsw-transport-minister-wants-all-of-sydneys-8000-buses-to-go-all-electric/amp/?__twitter_impression=true   QUESTION OF THE WEEK   RAJEEV NARAYAN If the price was right I would strongly consider it, My Chevy Bolt is 2 years old now and has 61K miles on it and I have not once DC fast charged it. Many people may simply need a car to drive around town and don't need DC fast charging.   SACHA For frequent long distance trips, there’s no doubt  CCS or superchargers are a must but I think different people have different needs and as such not having CCS and just using AC charging might work for people with houses . If it means getting a vehicle for 10k or so it might be worth it (although is CCS circuitry really that expensive that excluding it is really worth it for manufacturers  ?) When considering resale it’s a different story however - a car with both AC and CCS has more prospective buyers and might retain its value better . Of course any EV is better than a fossil powered car so no complaints here either way!   BILL POLLOCK As you likely know our North American domestic Electrical service is limited to 110v on One pole or 220V on Two poles.  Typically we run only 30  amps on our 220V circuits but can go as high as 50amps for high-draw appliances (an induction stove for example) Our Level 2 chargers are 40 amps max, so our highest Level 2 charge is about 8kW. That's an overnight charge every time.   So...no, I will not buy an EV without 50kW DC level 3 minimum.   JOHN HARCOMBE I do not care what charger plug car has as  on average people only do 1 or 2 long trips per year where they have to charge away from home charger. The major issue that UK Government should be sorting out with Europe and rest of countries now before massive numbers of ev being sold is have one standard high power charging plug like 500kw that is bi-directional, meaning grid to vehicle and vehicle to grid. I see Japan CHAdeMO's and China GBT looking at a combined charger plug standard which are backward compatible.   MARK BUCKINGHAM Kia ora  Martyn, even though I have a Kona, yes just ac charging is fine depends on use case.  Also more importantly in 3 hours England is playing the All Blacks in Japan to get into the final and then of course to win the world cup!!    QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   Set by listener Martin Young: “What were some of your biggest surprises about living with a BEV?”   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 258 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #498   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 12th June 2019. I have got a mega Patreon update to do…   Last we heard was from new Producer CHRISTIAN MARLER and EXEC PRODUCER PONTUS KINDBLAD. Next up is new EXEC PRODUCER PERRY SIMPKINS. Then JONATHAN PRICE UK signed up as a PRODUCER. And GREG BAILEY as PRODUCER. Over the weekend new EXEC PRODUCER MICHAEL KYFFIN (KUFFIN). And new PRODUCERS GILL NOWELL and MARK SANDERS. As if that wasn't enough, PAUL RIDINGS moved up to EXEC PRODUCER. And then three new PRODUCERS MICHAEL YOUNG, STEPHEN BROOK and MIKE IN OKLAHOMA.   RENAULT ZOE NEO ZE50 As a Renault Zoe owner I am looking forward to the new one, the ZE50 or Zoe Neo, or whatever we're calling it. The embargo gets lifted Monday and I haven't been told anything so this is all speculation. But a 50kWh battery, with CCS plug and 22kW AC charging makes for a very flexible car.  And not one of the Dutch journalists who attended Paris this week for the media day and took pics, has posted them online. They've kept the styling rather than make it look like a Clio with batteries. It's good to see the LED lights and the front parking sensors.   200KW CHARING FOR MODEL 3 IN EUROPE Starting last weekend, a firmware update will begin to roll out to all Model 3 with the Long Range battery in Europe. It will allow these cars to charge at up to 200 kW which equates to 850 miles per hour of range recovery. This means the fastest-charging cars in the world will be European Model 3 Long Range — charging on European ultrafast charging networks (such as Ionity, Fastned, and Allego).   “As we work towards the introduction of V3 Supercharging in Europe, we’re releasing an early software update to European Model 3 Long Range customers that will allow them to charge at hundreds of third party fast-charging stations – up to 200kW. When our own V3 Supercharger technology is introduced, these cars will be able to charge even faster at 250kW peak charge rates. Tesla vehicles benefit from the most extensive charging network in the world by having access to Tesla chargers like our Supercharger network, as well as publicly-available EV charging networks.”   TESLA ROADSTER’S SPECIAL STEERING WHEEL IN ACTION "Tesla’s next-gen Roadster prototype had an outing this week and it gave us a rare look at the electric hypercar’s special steering wheel in action. When Tesla unveiled the next-gen Roadster prototype back in 2017, it was equipped with a butterfly steering wheel. Butterfly steering wheels are not street legal in most markets, but an engineer at the launch event said that the automaker aims to release it in the production version." according to Fred at Electrek: "It offers very little grip space and for the first time, we clearly see someone doing two rotations for a short turn."   https://electrek.co/2019/06/12/tesla-roadster-steering-wheel-action/   ELECTRIFY AMERICA AND CHARGEPOINT ANNOUNCE INTEROPERABILITY AGREEMENT "If you're an EV driver, you've probably got apps and/or cards for multiple charging networks. It's part of life if you charge in public with much frequency. One of those accounts is probably with Chargepoint. Perhaps you have a membership with the rapidly expanding Electrify America network, too. Pretty soon, though, you'll only need one or the other, as Electrify America and Chargepoint have announced an interoperability agreement, meaning if you're a member of one, you can charge with the other network." says Autoblog: "The partnership, which goes into effect later this year, will combine access to more than 30,000 Level 2 and DC fast chargers. While this may not be super important to current EV drivers, who very well might already be using both networks individually, it simplifies things quite a bit for new adopters to have two of the country's largest networks working together."   https://www.autoblog.com/2019/06/11/electrify-america-chargepoint-network-interoperability/   NORWAY HYDROGEN STATION EXPLODES, TOYOTA AND HYUNDAI HALT SALES "A hydrogen station in Norway experienced an explosion on Monday, and the company who runs the station has since shut down 10 other hydrogen stations, according to several local sources. The station was in a suburb of the country's capital of Oslo. As of now, Nel Hydrogen (company who supplied the hydrogen and equipment) doesn't have an official explanation for the cause of the explosion." reports Autoblog: "Two people were taken to the hospital after the force of the blast caused the airbags to deploy in their car nearby. n response to the incident, both Toyota and Hyundai have halted sales of their hydrogen-powered cars in Norway. The stations that Nel Hydrogen shut down are located across both Norway and other countries in Europe."   https://www.autoblog.com/2019/06/12/norway-hydrogen-station-explodes-toyota-hyundai-halt-sales/   TOYOTA MIRAI GETS DEEPEST DISCOUNT YET—AMID HYDROGEN SHORTAGE "The two modest fuel-cell models you can currently purchase (versus lease) both carry luxury-vehicle prices: a base $59,430 for the 2019 Toyota Mirai and a base $59,345 for the eco-focused Hyundai Nexo Blue. Trade-in or resale value remains an unknown. And at the last time we filled with hydrogen, last October, it cost $17.49 per kilogram—potentially up to a $75 fill for the 312-mile Mirai or a $110 fill for the 380-mile Nexo Blue." says Green Car Reports: "ighly subsidized leases factor in at $349 and $399 per month for the Mirai and Nexo, respectively, or $379 for the other lease-only alternative, the Honda Clarity Fuel Cell. And all three include a big bank of subsidized hydrogen that will help ease at least the cost concern of refueling."   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1123535_toyota-mirai-gets-deepest-discount-yet-in-the-midst-of-hydrogen-shortage   TESLA SOARS PAST 40K TOTAL REGISTRATIONS IN NORWAY, MODEL 3 LEADS THE CHARGE "Tesla soars past 40k total registrations in Norway, Model 3 leads the charge" says Teslarati: "The Model S now makes up about 50% with nearly 20,000 registrations, the Model X at 30% with over 12,000 registrations, and the Model 3 represents about 20% with nearly 8,000 registrations. However, Model 3 sales have consistently represented the majority of Tesla’s month-to-month sales in Norway since the all-electric midsize sedan began arriving in February."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-passes-40k-total-registrations-in-norway/   UK BECOMES FIRST MAJOR NATION TO LEGISLATE NET ZERO EMISSIONS "The United Kingdom has become the first major economy to legislate long-term climate targets this week as outgoing Prime Minister Theresa May announced new legislation on Wednesday which will enshrine into law a net zero emissions by 2050 target." reports Clean Technica: "Even as she is effectively being pushed out the door of Number 10 Downing Street, Prime Minister Theresa May is looking to leave some legacy behind her — other than the catastrophic handling of the UK’s “Brexit” negotiations. Announced on Wednesday, Theresa May said that she would introduce a statutory instrument in Parliament to amend the Climate Change Act of 2008 to enter into law a commitment to “eradicate” the country’s “contribution to climate change by 2050.”   According to the UK government, this legislation is the first among G7 nations and is expected to encourage other major economies to follow the UK’s lead. "   https://cleantechnica.com/2019/06/12/uk-becomes-first-major-nation-to-legislate-net-zero-emissions/   FRANCE TO UPHOLD BAN ON SALE OF FOSSIL FUEL CARS BY 2040 Meanwhile a Reuters report today says: "The French government's new law on mobility will uphold a planned ban on fossil fuel-powered cars by 2040, Transport Minister Elizabeth Borne said on Tuesday. Former environment minister Nicolas Hulot said in July 2017 — at the beginning of President Emmanuel Macron's term — that France aimed to end the sale of gasoline and diesel vehicles by 2040 in a bid to become carbon neutral by 2050. The mobility law will also facilitate the rollout of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, notably by giving the residents of apartment buildings the right to ask for the installation of EV plugs in their parking lots."   https://www.autoblog.com/2019/06/11/france-ban-fossil-fuel-cars-2040/   VOLKSWAGEN DRIVER FAILS TO INFLATE TIRES WITH DC FAST CHARGER "Some electric car stories can really lighten the mood and provide some humor and here is one of such stories from some right-hand-drive market (maybe Victoria, Australia)." says InsideEVs: "As you can see, the two parked an internal combustion engine car at a DC fast charger (which was a bad idea to begin with) and started preparation to inflate the front tires! Can you imagine?   The driver grabbed the CCS Combo 2 plug and quickly figured out it's not going to work. Second try... with CHAdeMO plug didn't help either. Well, we've got a long way to go in regards to raising awareness it seems."   https://insideevs.com/news/354461/video-driver-failed-inflate-tires-fast-charger/     COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Thursday 26th April 2018. BMW iX3 TO BE MADE IN, AND EXPORTED FROM, CHINA The biggest car launch today was technically a concept, but let’s report on it because it’s such big news. The massively popular BMW X3 is finally confirmed as being an electric model, the iX3. And equally as big news, it is set to be made in China and be exported to USA and Europe. And it’s very similar to the X3 apart from BMW playing around with the kidney style grill. It will enter production in 2020 and is the first example I can think of to be a luxury upmarket car made in China and exported. What happened to quality only coming from Germany? And BMW sell a lot of SUV in North America so it’s a calculated risk, and means a lot for their reputation. They already make the plug in Z1 in China. The iX3 will have a range of 400km which is 250miles, but there’s no direction on whether. For comparison the new 40kWh Nissan LEAF has a 150mile EPA range. And it’s a strong effort to go up against the Jaguar I-PACE, the Audi e-tron Quattro, the Mercedes EQC crossover due next year in 2019. So smart money is on a 70kWh battery pack, and they’ve confirmed 150kW charge speeds. The motor is a very reasonable 200kW of power. The platform will come with battery packs from 60kWh to 120kWh depending on the needs of performance. Electrive say: “The core of the iX3 is very compact. The fifth generation eDrive contains the electric motor, transmission and performance electronics in one component. A further novelty is the fact that the electric motor was designed without using any rare-earth metals. Added to this development, are the new battery specs, which have improved performance characteristics, range, size and flexibility, according to the manufacturer.”   NISSAN’S LEAF WHICH IS A SYLPHY A new car was launched by Nissan yesterday – welcome to the world the Nissan Sylphy. From the front it’s a LEAF, from the back it’s a pretty generic sedan, from the side, it’s a LEAF-and-a-bit on the back. It’s Nissan’s first EV built for China and yes it does share the LEAF platform. Based on the Chinese cycle it’s good for 210 miles or 340kms. That sounds to me like the 40kWh AESC batteries and not the new larger 60kWh LG Chem batteries, because surely that range would be higher. Given that the Chinese standards are more forgiving than the EPA. It does feature the e-Pedal technology which has everyone impressed. It will be on sale this year. But will we see it in the US? Will we see it in Europe like the BMW? Nope. I would expect it to be very cheap however based on comments from Carlos Ghosn that even their own Nissan LEAF is too expensive for the Chinese market.   VOLVO XC40 PHEV Volvo was the first major name to say all their cars will be electrified by 2019, and now they’ve said half of its annual, worldwide sales will be electric cars within 7 years. And a lot can happen in 7 years! 2025 is the year when China wants 7 million electric cars being sold a year that’s 20% of all sales. We’ve seen the XC40 T5 Plug-in Hybrid at Auto China 2018 in Beijing, in their No.1 market in China. It has a 1.5litre three-cylinder engine coupled with the electric motor, and of course can run on electricity only, but we don’t know how far. At the show Volvo are only showing off cars with plugs – those being the XC40, 60 and 90. Volvo’s owner Geely has developed the powertrain which is also set to be used in Lynk&Co models, and for Geely’s own models in China. Autocar say: “Three main drive modes will be available with the T5 model: Hybrid, Power and Pure. The first will work to most efficiently combine both parts of the powertrain, while power will maximise the output of both. The final will harness only the electric motor.”   HONDA EVERUS CONCEPT In Beijng Honda has shown off another concept, and another stunner. The Everus – a mass produced B segment car for the Chinese market. Again the show in China is being used to show off the body and styling without any firm details of the drivetrain but it’s due to be in the hands of customers this year, and built by a joint venture, as is the deal with China, with GAC Group.   TOYOTA WILL HAVE TO GET SOME PLUGS Toyota might be famous for running ad campaigns saying we don’t believe in plugging in our hybrids, but someone forgot to tell the engineers. That’s because the Corolla and Levin are being shown off at Auto China 2018 to be on sale next year, and a full BEV in 2020. A full BEV for Toyota? But only for China! It’s based on the C-HR compact SUV. The Chinese partner for Toyota is GAC. The plug ins are said to do 50kms on pure electric alone, obviously made in China. These are the start of 10 new models, and also a R&D centre in China, to move forward with pure battery tech.   NEW BRAND FOR VW Volkswagen has launched a new car brand at Auto China called SOL, and the first car under that, the E20X. And again it’s the lovechild of VW with a domestic maker, JAC. Like the Honda it will be on sale this year, taking same parts of the JAC iEV7S, running 186 miles on one charge, it has smart charging, self-parking and luxuries like parking cameras.   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Sudden Shutdown Of Model 3 Line, China Made Elon Musk Very Happy Today and Porsche Announce Charging Network | 18 April 2018

Wednesday 18th April 2018. TESLA PAUSES PRODUCTION FOR UPGRADES A shutdown of the Tesla Model 3 production line seems to have caught everyone by surprise, including those working at Tesla! However the secrecy is totally understandable given how much is at stake and how so many publications want to bash the brand. Saying that, I’m not sure too many people like being told you have to take the next week off work, out of our annual holiday allowance! Tesla “says the shutdown is intended to resolve some of the problems that have contributed to the numerous delays in getting the cars to hundreds of thousands of reservation holders” according to The Verge. “Our Model 3 production plan includes periods of planned downtime in both Fremont and Gigafactory 1,” a Tesla spokesperson told The Verge. “These periods are used to improve automation and systematically address bottlenecks in order to increase production rates. This is not unusual and is in fact common in production ramps like this.” Model S and X production will continue unaffected. CHINA LOWERS THEIR WALL Up until now there were only two options for foreign carmakers to get into the lucrative, and frankly enormous, EV market in China. Either pay a 25% Import tax on ever car you import into the country or partner up in a Joint Venture with a domestic company at least 50/50 ownership. The aim of that was to bring knowledge into China. Last week on the podcast we talked about new rules coming in allowing foreign owners more flexibility in China and now we have more details Quartz points out: “the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), announced that that the country will scrap foreign investment limits for car manufacturing, beginning with new energy vehicles this year, a category that includes both hybrid and fully battery-run vehicles. One immediate beneficiary of the rule change might be a company that’s been trying to set up a manufacturing hub in China for several months now—and is already quite popular there despite the hefty duty its cars attract. While the timeline from the NDRC doesn’t mention Tesla, and any foreign electric vehicle maker can potentially benefit, the announcement comes after Tesla has several times in recent months expressed its interest in manufacturing in China, the company’s second-largest revenue generator.” The country will scrap the limits on firms making fully electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in 2018, commercial vehicle firms in 2020 and lift restrictions on the wider passenger vehicle market by 2022 Shares of German car makers all gained on the news, reversing earlier losses. China accounts for about half of Volkswagen’s (VW’s) namesake brand sales, while the world’s biggest car market is also the most significant buyer of luxury Mercedes, VW’s Audi unit and BMW vehicles. VW rose as much as 1.2%, and BMW and Mercedes-maker Daimler rose about 0.5%. USA VS CHINA The difference in preference between US and Chinese buyers is also interesting. Not only does China buy a lot more EVs but they prefer ppure BEVs. 555,300 plug-in vehicles were sold in China last year vs. US sales of just under 195,591, according to the US Department of Energy (DOE) yesterday. China saw an 81% share of put BEVs whereas in the US BEVs accounted for just over half (53%). PORSCHE TO HAVE 500 800-VOLT RAPID CHARGERS We heard the news recently that Porsche will be installing their 800-volt ultra rapid chargers at 189 dealerships in North America, and now CNET reports they’re going further. By the end of next year, the VW-owned company wants 500 od them forming a countrywide network. For comparison Tesla’s Supercharging network is 1,2000 stations, whilst Porsche will win on speed giving you 250 miles of range in under 20 mins. The partners are likely to be EVgo, Chargepoint and Electrify America, which makes sense, as that last one is where money from the VW dieselgate settlement is being spent. As for the ones at the dealers, they’ll be footing the cost for those and each one is over six figures, plus they’ll need a battery buffer to both even out the load and potentially avoid upgrading the grid connection. The network isn’t going to be limited to fast chargers, either. The automaker is also considering more traditional chargers at various points of interest, including hotels and golf courses. 10,000 EVS FOR OLA Indian ride-hailing firm Ola, backed by Japan’s SoftBank Group will launch 10,000 electric three-wheelers in the country over the next 12 months as part of a broader electrification plan, the company said in a statement on Monday. “Mission: Electric”, with a commitment to place 10,000 E-rickshaws and Electric auto-rickshaws in its service in the next 12 months. The company will develop “Mission: Electric” as a platform to bring one million electric vehicles on the road by 2021. ARC SOLAR CHARGING FOR PARKS AND REC Envision Solar Announces the Delivery of EV ARC™ Solar Charging Stations to California Department of Parks and Recreation. EV ARC™ products will allow park users, employees, and fleet vehicles to plug in and drive on sunshine in remote locations and/or where circuit deficiencies exist. The agency also appreciates the capability to move EV ARC™ EV chargers if necessary to optimize usage visitors at Natural Bridges State Park in Santa Cruz.  FORMULA GETS POWER BOOST Formula E’s 2018/19 car will use 200kW as its primary race power mode with a second mandatory-use setting at a “significantly” higher level, according to series boss Alejandro Agag” reports InsideEVs. “The Gen2 FE car has increased battery storage compared to its predecessor and drivers will no longer have to swap cars mid-race. But the series and the FIA were keen to retain an element of strategy and the mandatory use of two power levels during FE races was confirmed by the governing body’s World Motor Sport Council.” I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Record Breaking Batteries, e-tron Price and Tesla OTA Update | 16 Mar 2018

Friday 16th March 2018.   RECORD BREAKING BATTERIES Firstly apologies for missing this is as part of the Volkswagen Press Conference this week. It’s a small detail but I think it’s perhaps the most significant of all the announcements. And that’s quite a statement given the headline number was 20 billion Euros in contracts – not promises or press releases for commitments to clean up – signed contracts for battery supply in China and Europe, with an announcement for North America to come. I think the most startling figure wasn’t 20 billion, but 100. Just 100 euros was the key number and I missed it. But it was in the Q&A section, so that’s my defence! The CEO confirmed it has written battery contracts for under 100 Euro per kWh. Let’s add some caveats to that. WE don’t know any more about the deal, or whether there were a range of contracts, which is almost certain, and that was the lowest price or even the average price across all of them. We do know, unlike with Tesla’s Gigafactory and Panasonic, VW don’t want to be in the business of making batteries, so that 100 euros per kWh could be the price per battery delivered, which would be very impressive if true, considering hundreds of millions required for capital investment had they followed Tesla in making the batteries. That works out to $120 - $125, which is competitive against GM saying they were in the region of $145. Given VW need most of their batteries from 2022 onwards, given the rapid price fall of batteries, if these contracts are 100 euros four years away that is more reasonable. We just don’t know yet. Elon Musk has talked about $100 being an inflection point when electric cars, whose battery is by far the most expensive part, become the same as combustion engine cars. Given VW suppliers will be making a profit on those prices, I think that’s good news for Tesla. Although they do have the sunk costs of infrastructure and staff at Gigafactory 1, 2, 3 and onwards, the sheer scale of half a million Model 3’s per year mean that magical $100 shouldn’t be too far off. It seems like not so long ago we were talking about the price dropping $1000 per kWh. http://seekingalpha.com/article/4156050-lower-cost-tesla-volkswagens-new-battery-cell-costs-100-euro-per-kwh   AUDI E-TRON PRICE AND GT VERSION Staying with VW and their Audi brand will be out of the blocks with the e-tron soon. The prototypes ferrying car journalists around at the Geneva Motor Show last week were looking quite advanced. And now we know two things, when you can have one and how much they’ll cost. The e-tron will be available by the end of the year, and the price will start at 80,000 euros. It’s already on sale in some parts of Europe if you want to place a deposit. Some extra detail I’m not surprised about is a GT, or Gran Turismo, version coming soon. Just as the Jaguar I-PACE sees value in the electric racing series supporting Formula E, which will have a halo effect on the cars and the brand, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Jaguar Land Rovers performance teams allowed to add some bells and whistles it for a road going version. Remember as well the Tesla-based Electric GT championship now has FIA approval and looks to be on track to race late this year or next year. https://www.electrive.com/2018/03/15/audi-e-tron-price-gt-version-announced/   CHAdeMO UPDATE A quick check of the CHAdeMO website sees the total number of installed chargers heading towards 18,000 which up 30% year on year. Which countries and manufacturers will adopt and promote which technology is one of the most interesting parts of the future EV economy. As of the end of last year, 775,000 CHAdeMO compatible cars are on the roads, out of which 330,000 found a home in Europe, which saw a 50% increase in CHAdeMO chargers. That’s impressive as Europe is heading towards nearly all rapid chargers being CCS. CHAdeMO are keen to highlight their bidirectional capability as Vehicle 2 Grid becomes of interest to both buyers and utilities, who see a large stock of EVs as the perfect way to smooth out the peaks of the grid when electricity generation gets the most expensive. CHAdeMO also have confirmed specs for 200kW speeds and soon 400kW specs will be announced. That should future-proof even the most aggressive of fast chargers. Once again, it’s always worth saying, nearly all charging is carried out at home or work. https://electriccarsreport.com/2018/03/chademo-2017-another-good-year-of-great-growth/   HYUNDAI WANTS MORE COLD WEATHER MILES Hyundai have been talking to Electrek about the cold weather performance of the Kona. It comes with a heat pump which is an expensive option on many EV. Electrek says the smart air intake recycles heated air by controlling the amount of air entering and exiting the vehicle. By better controlling the air flow inside the vehicle, the HVAC system is able to heat the cabin more efficiently, thereby minimizing the amount of heating used during winter driving. There’s a driver-only button you can push which shuts off any heating to the passenger side of the vehicle, again savings energy when it’s very cold. Maybe those options above aren’t so critical with the 64kWh battery but with the smaller, more affordable 39.2 kWh pack it will add valuable miles to the range. https://electrek.co/2018/03/14/hyundai-kona-electric-cold-weather-performance/   PANASONIC ADD ANOTHER LOCATION Panasonic has confirmed they have started production of new prismatic batteries in China. Panasonic will manufacture the high-capacity and high-safety prismatic-type batteries at this factory and ship them to the North American and Chinese markets. We knew it was coming, Elon said it was coming, and we never doubted it! Electrek say: “Autopilot 2.0/2.5 drivers who reached out to Electrek are seeing a significant improvement in lane detection, a reduction of “ping-ponging” within a lane, and a generally better experience when Autosteer is activated. Some are also reporting a more efficient Traffic-Aware Cruise Control to slow down and stop when locked into a lead vehicle.” Where do you stand on the Autopilot 1 vs Autopilot 2 debate? In another report the general responsiveness and speed of the touchscreen has also been noticeably improved. https://electrek.co/2018/03/15/tesla-autopilot-update-autosteer/   Thank you for listening today, I hope you've enjoyed it.
