Show #842 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Saturday 18th July 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Welcome to a new Patreon PRODUCER NIKLAS NORRSÉN NEW YORK TO INVEST $750 MILLION TO EXPAND ELECTRIC-VEHICLE INFRASTRUCTURE "New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Thursday announced an investment program that would allocate $750 million to build charging stations and other electric-vehicle infrastructure as part of the state's long-term goal to reduce emissions. The measure is set to create more than 50,000 charging stations and will largely be funded by the state's investor-owned utility companies, with the total budget capped at $701 million through 2025." reports Autoblog: "An additional $48.8 million is allocated from a 2017 settlement with German carmaker Volkswagen AG over its diesel emissions cheating scandal to fund electric school and transit buses, as well as charging stations. New York's announcement comes on the heels of a similar measure by Florida, which on July 10 announced an $8.6 million investment to expand charging stations." https://www.autoblog.com/2020/07/17/new-york-to-invest-750-million-to-expand-electric-vehicle-infrastructure/ RENAULT ZOE VAN REVEALED AS PRACTICAL SMALL EV WITH 245-MILE RANGE "Created by applying modest modifications to the Zoe road car – most notably opaque rear windows and the removal of the rear seats to form a flat load area – the Zoe Van will be powered by the same 52kWh battery pack and 107bhp R110 electric motor. Its range is rated at 245 miles per charge under the WLTP test cycle, allowing for a 50% payload and 75kg driver."£ says Autocar: "Prices without VAT but with the plug-in van grant start at £19,380 and rise to £20,995, highlighting the business savings over the Zoe road car, which starts from £28,795 with VAT and prior to the application of the electric vehicle grant." https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/renault-zoe-van-revealed-practical-small-ev-245-mile-range UK COULD BAN NON-ELECTRIC NEW CAR SALES BY 2030, SAYS SHELL "Royal Dutch Shell expects the UK can end the sale of gasoline and diesel vehicles in just a decade, as the nation attempts to eliminate emissions by the middle of the century." accordin to WorldOil.com: "The ban can be brought forward to 2030 with “the right policy and incentives,” Sinead Lynch, the head of oil giant Shell’s operations in Britain said on LinkedIn. That’s five years earlier than the deadline set by Prime Minister Boris Johnson in February, and also beats the 2032 date that Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said may be possible to achieve. Europe’s biggest oil companies have been preparing for a slowdown in fuels demand, and are increasingly turning their attention to electricity production" https://www.worldoil.com/news/2020/7/17/uk-could-ban-non-electric-new-car-sales-by-2030-says-shell DS TO FOCUS ON BEV & PHEV AS OF 2025 "The electrification strategy of the PSA brand DS Automobiles provides for an even stronger orientation towards e-mobility: From 2025, DS intends to offer only fully electric models and plug-in hybrids." says electrive: "Currently, the French have a pure electric car in their range with the DS 3 Crossback E-TENSE, which takes over the drive technology from the Opel Corsa-e and Peugeot e-208. DS 4 E-TENSE is to be presented before the end of this year. At the beginning of June it was announced that a DS model will be built at Opel in Rüsselsheim from 2021 – according to reports, this will be the DS 4. Although the model is to be based on the larger EMP2 platform (which is currently offered at most as a PHEV), an electric motor with 100 kW output and a 50 kWh battery are mentioned as probable technical data." https://www.electrive.com/2020/07/17/ds-to-focus-on-bev-phev-as-of-2025/ ITALY’S BEV SALES DOUBLED IN FIRST HALF OF 2020 "Italy’s EV market is finally getting hot. Following months of unprecedented growth and despite an incredibly adverse time in history, electric mobility has now reached the halfway point of this infamous year with outstanding figures, doubling sales from 2019. And the most important aspect is, we haven’t seen anything yet." reports CleanTechnica: "Market share of hybrid and fully electric cars lags behind that of other European nations such as the UK, France, and Germany, let alone Scandinavian countries. market share of fully electric cars now stands at 1.7%. the Italian BEV market from booming in the first six months of 2020, doubling year over year to about 10,000 units." Furthermore, Porsche recently announced the RWD version of the Taycan, which will bring the base price even lower. However, the German automaker has only confirmed deliveries of that version for the Chinese market so far." https://electrek.co/2020/07/17/porsche-taycan-electric-car-first-half-2020/ GENERAL MOTORS PROVIDES DETAILS FOR LINE OF FUTURE ELECTRIC VEHICLES Beginning in 2020, GM’s EV portfolio will begin to expand with launches by Chevrolet, GMC and Buick. The next Chevrolet EV will be a new version of the Bolt EV, launching in 2021 as a 2022 model, followed by the 2022 Bolt EUV, launching Summer 2021. The Bolt EUV will be the first vehicle outside of the Cadillac brand to feature Super Cruise, the industry’s first true hands-free driver assistance technology for the highway. Later in 2020, GM plans to reveal the Cadillac Lyriq luxury SUV. Production of the Ultium-powered GMC Hummer EV is expected to begin in Fall 2021 at the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant. A Buick SUV will offer more conventional crossover proportion that maximizes interior space and cargo. A Buick CUV will feature more expressive proportion with a greater emphasis on form and athletic fashion. LIGHTNING SYSTEMS DEBUTS NEW ELECTRIC FORD F-550 FOR SHUTTLE BUSES, DELIVERY TRUCKS "Lightning Systems has introduced an all-electric powertrain for the popular Ford F-550 Chassis Cab. The top speed is 65 miles per hour. The 128 kWh batterypack supports a range of more than 100 miles, depending on equipment configuration, payload, route, weather, and driver." repotrs Green Car Congress: "Full regenerative braking adds range while reducing wear and tear on the friction brakes. Featuring a liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery system, the new Lightning Electric Ford F-550 will accommodate a full charge in as little as two-and-a-half hours with DC fast charging. Show #796 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 1st June 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. Welcome to a new PREMIUM PARTNER of the podcast it's VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST. Thank you for the Bill Woeste for his support and for all of the teams who are looking forward to the Volvo XC40 Recharge. https://www.volvocarscincinnatieast.com/ 100KW CHARGING SPEED FOR PEUGEOT E-208 CONFIRMED IN TESTS "Am watching @BjornNyland testing a Peugeot e-208 on a 1000km challenge and, at 11% state of charge, it's currently at 99.8kW charge speed. That's quick compared to it's competition (Zoe 50, MG ZS, IONIQ). Water cooled battery pack, heat pump too, they've done well with it. Isn't it the same chassis as DS 3 Crossback E-Tense and Vauxhall/Opel Corsa-E? All three certainly have exactly the same specs, 50kWh pack with 100kW charging (7kW onboard, optional 11kW). Although somehow the Pug and DS are 0-60 in 8.7 secs, but the Corsa is 7.6 secs. Hmm. They all have the same 100kW/136hp motor. For a quick splash & dash, the Peugeot will beat the Renault IF you can find a 150kW charger. But the charge curves, when going all the way >90%, Zoe will keep taking 30kW+ whilst the e-208 seems to go down to single figures, so the Zoe starts to 'catch up' (if that makes sense)." www.twitter.com/evnewsdaily ELECTRIC VEHICLE SALES ARE PREDICTED TO SURGE IN 2021 "A new report by Cairn Energy Research Advisors, a research firm focused on the battery and EV industries, predicts a surge in electric vehicle sales in 2021 as countries around the world push new programs to encourage consumers to buy battery powered vehicles. Cairn estimates global sales of EVs in 2021 will jump 36% and top 3 million vehicles for the first time ever." says CNBC Markets: "Production of electric vehicles is estimated to climb to at least 1.3 million and could reach 1.5 million depending on market conditions this year, according to Bernstein analyst Mark Newman. Wedbush analyst Dan Ives raised his price target for Tesla from $600 to $800 saying, "we continue to believe EV demand in China is starting to accelerate with Tesla competing with a number of domestic and international competitors for this market share. Meanwhile, Cairn Energy Research predicts the biggest growth in EV sales next year will happen in Europe, mainly because governments in the EU are committed to lowering carbon dioxide emissions. That commitment is pushing countries like France to roll out new incentives to convince residents to buy electric cars. In announcing a new bonus for people to buy an electric car, France President Emmanuel Macron said he wanted France to become the top producer in Europe of clean vehicles. While the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y are likely to get the lions share of mass market sales, there are several new models including the Ford Mustang Mach-E and General Motor's Hummer EV SUV that will focus more attention on the electric market. In addition, several electric pickup trucks are scheduled to roll out by the end of 2021." https://www.cnbc.com/2020/05/29/led-by-tesla-electric-vehicle-sales-are-predicted-to-surge-in-2021.html RIVIAN ENLISTS FORMER TESLA EMPLOYEES TO BUILD ITS OWN SUPERCHARGER-STYLE NETWORK "It seems the Amazon-backed electric adventure vehicle startup Rivian is taking a leaf, and employees, out of the Tesla playbook before it launches its debut vehicles. Rivian has started work on its “adventure network,” its Tesla Supercharger rival, and its hired Carrington Bradley, Tesla’s former senior manager of charger deployment, to do it" says TheNextWeb: "Whilst at Tesla, Bradley was responsible for managing a team of project managers to “design, permit, and build” Supercharger locations. Under Bradley’s leadership, Tesla grew from building 50 to 150 Supercharger sites per year. The electric SUV startup has also hired Kit Ahuja — who was formerly a manager at Tesla — to be director of the Rivian Adventure Network. The company also recruited Sara Eslinger, formerly head of electric vehicle deployment at ride-share firm Lyft. It certainly looks like Rivian is getting ready to charge ahead, ahem, with its network. Having people with a successful track record in this year could be a boon for the startup." https://thenextweb.com/shift/2020/06/02/rivian-enlists-former-tesla-employees-build-supercharger-style-network/ GEELY'S POLESTAR PLANS CHINA SHOWROOM EXPANSION TO COMPETE WITH TESLA "Polestar, the premium electric vehicle maker owned by China's Geely, plans a big expansion of its showroom network in the mainland, sources said, as it prepares for delivery of cars to compete with Tesla Inc's locally made Model 3. Showroom strength is becoming an important differentiator for electric vehicle (EV) makers in the world's biggest auto and EV market, as they line up new model launches" according to ChannelNewsAsia: "Polestar, which plans to deliver Polestar 2 electric sedans in China from July, currently has one showroom, in the capital Beijing. It plans to have 20 showrooms, with most of them opening in the third quarter of this year. Unlike sales of cars through dealers that most traditional automakers rely on, Polestar will sell directly to customers. In China, Tesla has over 50 showrooms. Nio currently operates around 110 showrooms, with some of the properties belonging to partners. Xpeng plans to have over 200 outlets " And there are hybrid versions in China like WM Motor, which has it's own Spaces to see the cars, and then partners who look after Sales, delivery and services." https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/business/geely-s-polestar-plans-china-showroom-expansion-to-compete-with-tesla--sources-say-12795202 BUFFETT-BACKED BYD TO SUPPLY EV BATTERIES TO FORD "Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker BYD Co Ltd (002594.SZ), (1211.HK) will supply EV batteries to U.S. automaker Ford Motor Co (F.N), a document on the website of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology showed on Monday. Ford’s China venture with Changan Automobile (000625.SZ) is seeking government approval to build a plug-in hybrid model equipped with BYD’s batteries, according to the document." writes Reuters today: "This marks BYD’s first-known battery supply deal with a major global automaker. Shenzhen-based BYD, which is backed by U.S. investor Warren Buffett, said it would supply EV components including batteries and power management devices." https://uk.reuters.com/article/us-ford-byd-electric/buffett-backed-byd-to-supply-ev-batteries-to-ford-idUKKBN2381VJ RENAULT, NISSAN AND MITSUBISHI EVS AND PHEVS SHARE UPPER BODIES "The companies said they would share "upper bodies" of same segment cars besides platforms. Would that mean all EVs and PHEVs would look the same? Renault sells Dacia cars in Latin America with its diamond-shaped logo. The Nissan Aprio is nothing more than a badge-engineered first-generation Dacia Logan. The intention with the upper bodies was not to have to redo everything from company to company. There are things clients do not see, and that can be common, something Delbos names as "first upper body." Unfortunately, she did not detail what this structure would be." says InsideEVs: "It is a step further than the Common Module Families (CMF) strategy. If the three carmakers can share the platforms and the first upper body, they can have savings of up to 40 percent. each company will have its own teams working on the first upper body and on what she called "sister upper bodies" – the part that would ensure each car would look like a proper Renault, Nissan, or Mitsubishi. The interim CEO – who is waiting for Luca de Meo to take the helm on July 1 – also wishes that all the same-segment cars from the three companies can be produced in the same factory. That will lower idle capacity and allow for plant closure, another cost-cutting measure. Renault wants to save €2 billion and will fire 15,000 people. That means that the Nissan Ariya will probably already be developed to allow for a Renault and Mitsubishi derivatives. The PHEV vehicles from Renault could also present Nissan options. The Captur PHEV could help a Juke PHEV to be sold in the future, for example. The future Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV could be the basis for a new Renault Kadjar, even if we believe the Nissan Qashqai will lead the pack." https://insideevs.com/news/426271/will-renault-nissan-mitsubishi-evs-look-alike/ TESLA STOCK REELS IN $900 FOLLOWING ELON MUSK’S BIG SPACE ACHIEVEMENT "At the time of writing, Tesla stock traded at $873.95. The surge in price could be attributed to projections that the electric vehicle sector will skyrocket in 2021 based on a new report by Cairn Energy Research Advisors. Musk’s success over the weekend with the newly-earned bonus and successful SpaceX launch may have attributed to the stock price increase as well. SpaceX became the first privatized company to successfully launch NASA astronauts into orbit." reports Teslarati. From the comments: "Space X and Tesla) are two different companies in different market segments but human nature being what it is, will (and have) draw a connection between the successful launch of the Crew Dragon to the ISS and the value of the car company. Had it been the other way around and the launch had failed, I have no doubt that the people who are anti-Tesla would have had a "field day" with equating that event with Tesla's viability as a company." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-stock-reels-in-900-following-elon-musks-big-space-achievement-analyst-upgrades/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK Critics say EVs are on the for the rich, so what do you view as ‘affordable’ prices? TESLA'S MILLION MILE BATTERY WILL SLASH COSTS "For months, Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk has been teasing investors, and rivals, with promises to reveal significant advances in battery technology during a "Battery Day" in late May." says Autoblog: "New, low-cost batteries designed to last for a million miles of use and enable electric Teslas to sell profitably for the same price or less than a gasoline vehicle are just part of Musk's agenda, people familiar with the plans told Reuters. The new “million mile” battery at the center of Tesla's strategy was jointly developed with China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology Ltd (CATL) and deploys technology developed by Tesla in collaboration with a team of academic battery experts recruited by Musk, three people familiar with the effort said. Eventually, improved versions of the battery, with greater energy density and storage capacity and even lower cost, will be introduced in additional Tesla vehicles in other markets, including North America, the sources said. Reuters reported exclusively in February that Tesla was in advanced talks to use CATL’s lithium iron phosphate batteries, which use no cobalt, the most expensive metal in EV batteries." First I have read about it being in China first. Also, CATL being a partner too. Cell to pack technology - rather than cells to modules to packs. Price parity, and possibly even cheaper EVs than fossil cars. https://www.autoblog.com/2020/05/14/tesla-secret-electric-car-battery-million-mile-lower-cost/ TESLA STARTS BUILDING LONG RANGE MODEL 3 CARS AT CHINA PLANT "Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) said on Thursday it had started producing Long Range Model 3 vehicles in its Shanghai factory and aimed to deliver them to customers soon." reports Reuters: "The company said the model would be sold at 344,050 yuan ($48,495), keeping the price steady even after China stops offering generous subsidies from July for electric vehicles that cost more than 300,000 yuan." https://www.reuters.com/article/us-tesla-china-price/tesla-starts-building-long-range-model-3-cars-at-china-plant-idUSKBN22Q1BR CHINA’S MODEL 3 INTERIOR RECEIVES A TIMELY MODEL Y-INSPIRED UPDATE " the latest Model 3 units produced in Gigafactory Shanghai are fitted with both USB Type C charging ports and a wireless charging pad, both of which are utilized in the Tesla Model Y." reckons Teslarati: "Tesla’s use of USB-C and wireless charging capabilities are an advantage for electric car owners. Many mobile devices on the market today are capable of fast-charging with USB-C ports, and flagship devices from premier smartphone makes such as Apple and Samsung are equipped with wireless charging capabilities. Gigafactory Shanghai’s Phase 2 is expected to house a Model Y factory. Currently, the local production plant is poised to hit a production run-rate of 200,000 Model 3 sedans every year." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-china-model-3-model-y-interior-update/ VOLVO CEO SAYS VIRUS WILL ACCELERATE EV ADOPTION Volvo CEO Håkan Samuelsson. Speaking at a Financial Times global digital conference: "Electrification will go faster. I think it would be naive to believe after some months, everything will return to normal, and our customers will come back into a showroom asking for diesel cars. They will ask even more for electric cars. And that is speeding up. If governments subsidize a return to the old world, I think would be a waste of money. They should use the money to promote new technology as they were planning to do before corona. The way we distribute cars, with physical showrooms and so on, I think everybody has learned during this shutdown that e-commerce is working, and more and more people have experience. That will encourage people to look for cars online. So I think the distribution and where you’re selling cars will change. It has been changing already, but that will be changed more rapidly now." h/t electrek: https://electrek.co/2020/05/14/volvo-ceo-pandemic-will-rapidly-accelerate-shift-to-electric-cars/ ONE FUTURE GM ELECTRIC VEHICLE MAY BE INTRODUCED EARLIER THAN PLANNED "" it looks as though one future GM electric vehicle could even arrive earlier than planned. Vice President of Electric and Autonomous Vehicles at GM, Ken Morris, indicated that one EV program may be pulled forward." says GM Authority: "Morris indicated that several other GM electric vehicle-related plans remained unaffected by the COVID-19 pandemic, saying that GM’s deal with Honda to produce two new electric vehicles was still moving ahead, and that plans to source new renewable energy from DTE were also on track. Morris also said that GM’s $25 billion budget for EV programs was still in place." https://gmauthority.com/blog/2020/05/one-future-gm-electric-vehicle-may-be-introduced-earlier-than-planned/ DACIA PREPARES TO LAUNCH FIRST EV WITH SPRING MINI-SUV "Dacia’s first electric vehicle, the Spring, which is based on the Renault K-ZE mini-SUV sold in China, will go on sale early next year. The Spring was first revealed as a concept in early March, in an online presentation instead of at the cancelled Geneva auto show. The production version will have a range of “at least” 200 km (124) miles, Dacia says." according to Automotive News Europe: "Dacia has not announced a price, but the City K-ZE sells in China for about 8,000 euros ($8,900). Former Renault Group CEO Thierry Bollore said last year that the automaker was working on an electric vehicle that would sell for 10,000 euros or less." So for the UK: "Citroen has launched the ë-Dispatch, the French firm's latest pure-electric van, offering up to 205 miles on a single charge. A 50 kWh pack will allow for a 143 mile range on a charge, whilst the 75 kWh battery offers the headline 205 mile range. Either will power a 100 kW electric motor." says Next Green Car. From Opel we already mentioned the Vivaro-e which is a larger panel van: "The 75kWh battery boasts a range of up to 330 kilometres, or for less intense usage needs, the 50kWh battery has a range of up to 230km (WLTP)." And finally from electrive: "Peugeot has also presented its version of the battery-electric transporter with the e-Expert. The technology is identical to that of its two sister models. Peugeot plans to announce prices in June. The drive train and the batteries are the same for all models: the electric motor known from the Opel Corsa-e and Peugeot e-208 and e-2008 has an output of 100 kW. In contrast to the small cars, however, two battery sizes are offered in the vans, each with 50 and 75 kWh. Like the Opel Vivaro-e, Peugeot offers a three-phase AC charger with 11 kW in addition to the standard AC charger with 7.4 kW (single-phase)." With a max payload of 1,210 kg these are useful vans, with towing of 1,000kg. BYD HAN EV REVEALED AS TESLA MODEL 3 RIVAL The Han EV is the first full-electric passenger car equipped with BYD’s ground-breaking new ‘Blade Battery’ technology – delivering greatly enhanced safety, improved range capability and a simplified, smaller pack design. The innovative battery system also pushes its cruising range up to 605 kilometres (376 miles) on a full charge. The Blade Battery can produce a stable current of up to 800 Amps powering the BYD Han EV. The high-performance silicon carbide motor-control module improves the peak-current capacity by 58%, enabling acceleration from 0 to100km/h (62mph) in just 3.9 seconds. Additionally, the Han is also China’s first mass-produced EV equipped with Bosch’s ‘IPB Intelligent Integrated Brake System’, which not only brings braking safety with higher precision, but also delivers a longer range and improved braking comfort. MORE ON HYUNDAI 45 EV "Hyundai has been spotted testing a prototype for a compact electric crossover SUV that's expected to be launched in 2021." says MotorAuthority: Hyundai already offers EVs in the form of the battery-electric Ioniq Electric and Kona Electric and fuel cell-electric Nexo, but the new SUV will be the automaker's first vehicle based on a platform designed specifically for battery-electric cars. Called the E-GMP (Electric-Global Modular Platform), the platform will also likely be used by Kia and Genesis for their own EVs." https://www.motorauthority.com/news/1127263_2021-hyundai-45-electric-suv-spy-shots HOT CUPRA VERSION OF SEAT EL-BORN ELECTRIC CAR IN THE PIPELINE "Cupra, SEAT’s performance-focussed brand, could soon launch a hot version of the el-Born EV. The Spanish brand has recently filed trademark applications for both the “Cupra Born” and “Cupra el-Born” nameplates." writes AutoExpress: "The Cupra el-Born would be based on the Volkswagen Group’s dedicated MEB electric underpinnings. Unlike the standard SEAT el-Born, though, this Cupra variant should feature a more powerful electric motor, supplied by a larger-capacity battery pack. The el-Born concept looks similar in length to a SEAT Leon, but it rides on larger wheels up to 20-inches in diameter. Like all of the Volkswagen Group’s MEB cars, the el-Born also has a long wheelbase relative to its overall length – which should allow it to deliver the interior space of a car from the class above." https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/seat/100354/hot-cupra-version-seat-el-born-electric-car-pipeline QUESTION OF THE WEEK …it’s back! Show #748 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 14th April 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Welcome to a new PATREON EXECUTIVE PRODUCER IAN (WATTIE) WATKINS 2021 FORD F-150 HYBRID WON’T BE A PLUG-IN HYBRID ACCORDING TO FORD Mike Levine (@mrlevine) is the Product Communication Manager for Ford North America, said on a Tweet response to a Car and Driver story about the “laughable” range of 10 mpgs from the Ford F-150 PHEV: “Ford has never said the next F-150 will include a plug-in hybrid.” @mrlevine: “What Ford has said is that the F-150 and Explorer rear-wheel drive hybrids both share a crazy smart 10-speed modular hybrid transmission sharing 90% of its parts with the non-hybrid 10-speed.” Jimmy at TorqueNews says: "With the electric assist motor and the modular hybrid transmission, this could also increase the towing capability of the 2021 Ford F-150 hybrid. How much of an increase? Well that’s hard to say. But if the Explorer Hybrid was able to pick up an additional 1,500 lbs. in towing then so could the F-150." https://www.torquenews.com/9539/2021-ford-f-150-hybrid-won-t-be-plug-hybrid-according-ford TESLA ASKS LANDLORDS FOR RENT REDUCTION DURING CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC "Tesla has reportedly asked landlords for rent discounts as it tries to cut costs during the coronavirus crisis." writes the NEw York Post: "Silicon Valley-based Tesla told landlords that it wants to talk about options so it “can continue to partner and work together to ensure a continued and mutually beneficial relationship,” according to the paper. The company has said it primarily leases space for its offices, service centers, retail locations and other parts of its operations." https://nypost.com/2020/04/14/tesla-asks-landlords-for-rent-reduction-during-coronavirus-pandemic/ GROUPE RENAULT KILLS OF COMBUSTION CARS TO FOCUS ON EVS IN CHINA "French automaker Renault said Tuesday that it would start building only electric vehicles for China's huge passenger car market, dropping conventional internal combustion engines as well as its joint venture with local manufacturer Dongfeng." reports Econommic Times: "To bolster its all-electric push, Renault said it will "reinforce" its eGT venture, also formed with Dongfeng as well as Renault's Japanese alliance partner Nissan, to further development of its City K-ZE model, a low-cost crossover vehicle that Renault plans to launch in Europe next year." The Group’s EV business will be developed through the two existing joint ventures: eGT New Energy Automotive Co., Ltd (eGT) and Jiangxi Jiangling Group Electric Vehicle Co. Ltd (JMEV). With 860,000 electric vehicles sold in China in 2019, China is by far the largest EV market in the world. EV sales are expected to reach 25% of the Chinese market by 2030. " says New Mobility: "Groupe Renault expects to reinforce its partnership with Nissan and Dongfeng within eGT to make K-ZE a worldwide car. A derivative for Europe based on “Dacia Spring” concept will be sold from 2021." Francois Provost, chairman of the China region for Renault: "“We are opening a new chapter in China. We will concentrate on electric vehicles and light commercial vehicles, the two main drivers for future clean mobility and more efficiently leverage our relationship with Nissan” https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/magazines/panache/opening-a-new-chapter-in-china-renault-shifts-focus-to-all-electric-cars/articleshow/75141173.cms?from=mdr https://www.newmobility.global/e-mobility/groupe-renault-focus-evs-china/ AUDI Q4 E-TRON SPOTTED TESTING UNDER A VW SKIN "A new series of spy shots depicting what appears at first blush to be Volkswagen's new ID.4 crossover tell us that Audi's engineers hard at work on the next all-electric member of its crossover and SUV lineup. Sure, it would be easy to dismiss this as just another VW tagging along with some Audi test mules, but the ID.4 has already been spotted in the wild with effectively no camouflage. This mule, on the other hand, is heavily disguised (using Audi's favorite vinyl wrap style) and is wearing Ingolstadt plates." reports Yahoo News: "Audi claimed its concept would pack an 82-kWh battery capable of delivering approximately 280 miles of range (by WLTP measurement). These specs are similar to what we know about the VW ID.4" Expect dual motors, of course for Quattro, and 125kW rapid charging. https://ph.news.yahoo.com/audi-q4-e-tron-spotted-134600705.html TESLA MODEL Y TEARDOWN REVEALS OIL FILTERS ATTACHED TO ITS MOTORS "One of the main arguments in favor of electric cars is that they have much easier maintenance than combustion-engined competitors. Fewer parts and most of them not so prone to wear are the explanations. Yet, the Model Y teardown process carried on by Munro & Associates revealed that the Tesla electric motors have a component that combustion engines also have, and that needs to be replaced quite often: an oil filter." reports Gus at InsideEVs: "Just make no mistake: electric motors do not need oil, so the filter is for the integrated gearbox units, not for the motors. We just wonder how often these filters must be replaced." https://insideevs.com/news/409505/tesla-model-y-teardown-reveals-oil-filters/?fbclid=IwAR1s-_wIsAo2oX93nQ-130pFtzNV6D6SGHX5bCD6bGeMY0iruJEF0tlQMew TESLA COURTED WITH $1 BILLION INCENTIVE FOR CYBERTRUCK GIGAFACTORY IN MISSOURI "Recent reports from Missouri reveal that Joplin is offering a $1 billion package to Tesla if the electric car maker decides to build its upcoming Cybertruck Gigafactory in the city. The $1 billion package includes a massive 1,042-acre plot of land at a 50% discount, a 100% tax break for 12 years, and generous state incentives." according to Teslarati: "If Tesla’s previous facilities are any indication, the Cybertruck Gigafactory could employ up to 7,000 people from the area, making it a valuable contributor to the state’s economy." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-1-billion-incentive-cybertruck-gigafactory-missouri/ TESLA WILL BUILD ITS OWN MAPS USING DRIVING DATA FROM THE FLEET "Tesla CEO Elon Musk just confirmed on Twitter that the Smart Summon feature in the future will use the GPS points from the maps/navigation data generated by the Tesla fleet cars that have previously been at that location, in order to further refine this feature" reports XAutoWorld@: "Tesla currently uses Google Maps as the base and to pin-point the points of interests but the navigation data and routing engine are provided by another software company named MapBox which has been working on these projects for about a decade now.In 2018 MapBox acquired the routing engine named ‘Vallhalla‘, the is now part of the core API MapBox provides to users and enterprise clients like Tesla, Facebook, and many more. MapBox claims they gather data from millions of devices that their application is a part of and they reach at least 600 million people a month." https://www.xautoworld.com/tesla/smart-summon-tesla-maps-data/ SMALL LOW CARBON TECH IS BETTER FOR DECARBONIZATION "Low carbon technologies that are relatively small in scale, more affordable and can be mass deployed are more likely to enable a faster transition to net zero emissions than high cost mega-projects, a new academic study released this week has argued." says Green Biz: "The study, published the journal Science, highlights the benefits of prioritizing smaller technologies such as heat pumps, solar panels and electric bikes to drive decarbonization, in comparison to more costly, large-scale solutions such as nuclear power plants and carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects. While it cautions that smaller scale green technologies are "not a panacea" as they cannot substitute larger alternatives in all circumstances — such as for long haul flights or industrial processes — the study nevertheless found smaller systems carried lower investment risks as well as greater scope for improvements in both cost and performance." https://www.greenbiz.com/article/small-low-carbon-tech-better-decarbonization-mega-projects-study-suggests WORLD’S FIRST FULLY ELECTRIC RV CAN NOW GO 249 MILES ON ONE CHARGE "Eight months ago, the world’s first completely electric motorhome debuted at a German trade show. With a range of 124 miles, the camper showed that while the RV industry continues to work towards more eco-friendly designs, the big limitation is range." according to Curbed.com: "Now, that same zero-emissions RV is on the market with a longer range and interior photos, to boot. Real life testing will be necessary to see how close drivers can get to the newly advertised range of 249 miles, but that’s a lot more than the recently announced Winnebago Industries commercial RV that only has a range of 85-125 miles per charge. The camper most similar to the Iridium EV is probably the Nissan e-NV200, a zero-emission, factory-built camper that’s completely electric. But this pop-up camper isn’t a full-size motorhome, and it also comes with a 124-mile range before it needs to charge." https://www.curbed.com/2019/9/17/20870863/electric-rv-for-sale-camper-motorhome-iridium-dusseldorf NEW ELECTRIC CORSA-E NOW AVAILABLE WITH VAUXHALL CONNECT "Vauxhall has announced that its new Corsa-e EV is now available with the firm’s enhanced connected services tool. The firm’s first electric car is now offered with ‘Vauxhall Connect’, which allows owners and drivers of the battery-powered hatch to see charging information and grant other remote services." reports CarKeys.co.uk: "Just a few of the services being introduced include a ‘digital key’, which allows for remote locking and unlocking for up to five users, along with a function that can beep the horn and flash the lights away from your car to help find it in a car park. The Corsa-e’s large 50kWh battery allows for a claimed 209-mile electric range." https://www.carkeys.co.uk/news/new-electric-corsa-e-now-available-with-vauxhall-connect QUESTION OF THE WEEK How can the EV industry help people get into driving electric cars as soon as this is all over? The PEUGEOT e-2008 SUV is powered by a 100kW (136bhp) electric motor with a 50kWh battery. Under WLTP testing, the 100% electric, zero exhaust emissions, SUV provides 193 miles of range. DRIIVZ AND ENNET TO BRING SMART EV CHARGING SERVICES TO JAPAN Currently, EVs only account for 0.5% of all new cars sold in Japan. However, several Japanese automakers are preparing to launch electric models in the next couple of years which is expected to increase the adoption of EVs in the country. By integrating elements of Driivz’s EV charging management platform into its smart charging service, Ennet will be able to analyse the power usage patterns of its customers, identify when energy grids receive the least demand for charging and make sure fleets are sufficiently charged for use the following day. Functionality to remotely start and stop charging will also be enabled. LYFT IS INTRODUCING A FLEET OF 200 ELECTRIC KIAS IN COLORADO "Coloradans will be able to catch a ride in a sleek, new $40,000 electric Kia Niro as soon as December even though the vehicles aren’t available for sale in the state." says Colorado Sun: "That’s because Lyft is making a fleet of 200 of the long-range electric crossovers available for lease to its Colorado drivers. The ride-sharing company on Thursday rolled out the plan — its first attempt in the U.S. to make an electric-vehicle fleet available to its drivers — thanks to a law change earlier this year.Legislators opened up Colorado’s electric-vehicle tax credit program to rental companies and businesses with fleets in an attempt to attract a company like Lyft to put a mass of EVs on the roads. Lyft, which lobbied for the change, hopes laws will change in other states, too. " https://coloradosun.com/2019/11/14/kia-niro-lyft-colorado-fleet/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERS Damon Ireland Our key reason for owning an EV is not being beholden to the fuel companies to run our car. Here in New Zealand we are paying $2.20 for a litre of 91 octane petrol which which tends to jump up quickly whenever any overseas events affects the value of crude oil or our dollar. In contrast our electricity price has not changed in over 3 years Doug Vowles, Canada Hey Martyn – First off – last week my wife and I ordered our first electric car, the Tesla Model 3 SR+. Hoping to get it before the end of the year. Thank you for being part of the process in getting to that decision! QOW answer: ZERO EMISSIONS. I currently would not look at any car that wasn’t zero emissions. There are other requirements beyond that (like range) but much of it (0 – 60…) is just gravy. Don Miller I never run late for an appointment because I had to stop and get gas. (We charge each night so we leave home with 200 miles of range) Phil Kemp I'd vote instant torque as the biggest advantage. It's not only convenient but can be a life saver in a tight situation. James Penfold from EV Launchpad Martin, answer to question of the week: stomping on the “gas” pedal never gets old when you are running on guilt free, inexpensive renewable energy! Thanks for the awesome podcast. James Penfold Boston USA. Dafydd Cheung Genuinely, I’m more interested in EVs, because on the whole, they are less destructive to the only planet we have. May the sun shine on your panels. Adam DeVries I bought my car because it was electric. I hated going to gas stations. someone just asked me if I liked my car because it was electric or because it had autopilot. I can't decide if I would rather drive a car that was electric or one that had autopilot. I think I prefer the convenience of the electric vehicle getting to charge at home and work always having a full tank but it is a hard decision. ARON MCINNES Being able to plug in my garage and go every morning without worrying about filling up. I drive an average of 4500km a month, I fuel up a lot and the savings would be nice too. DAVE DEWSON from EVSMILES Number one thing with an EV.... way more smiles per mile! CORTEEN QOTW, my favourite feature is getting into a de-iced and pre warmed car in the winter, can’t beat driving past all your neighbours who are outside in the cold scraping their cars! MARTY YOUNG My "one thing" would be the acceleration. I'm a pilot, and I love when I push the throttle forward and feel the acceleration press me back into my seat and the speed increases until the wheels leave the ground! I get a similar feeling (minus the wheels leaving the ground!) in my 2016 Volt. SERVULUS BILLY You ask what's the one upside to driving an EV.... I give you the experience itself. ..... the stares on admiration, the thumbs up of approvals, the many questions of FUD I was able to defunct, the minds and thought processes I was able to change or at least open their eye and minds to something new, the comradery of the brand and last but not least the driving experience itself for which there was no comparison Øyvind Bjørkelund Best thing with my EV must be better fuel economy! TOM RAFTERY The one thing I love about driving my EV is that I am living in the future! I have a 5kW solar array on my roof which I use to charge the car – the lack of emissions, the zippiness of the car, the quiet ride all contribute to my awesome feeling of future living QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week… "If you were marketing a for an new EV brand (or Tesla) how would you do it?” I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 251 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #633 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 6th November 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. TESLA WILL UNVEIL ITS ‘CYBERTRUCK’ ELECTRIC PICKUP ON NOVEMBER 21ST "Tesla will finally unveil its long-awaited electric pickup truck on November 21st, Elon Musk tweeted on Wednesday. The truck, which Musk has dubbed “Cybertruck,” is supposed to look like something straight out of Blade Runner, the CEO has said." writes The Verge: "The truck will be unveiled at Tesla’s design studio in Los Angeles, California, which sits on the same lot as SpaceX’s headquarters. Musk has said the forthcoming pickup truck has a “heart-stopping” design, with better utility than a Ford F-150 and superior performance to a basic Porsche 911." https://www.theverge.com/2019/11/6/20951616/tesla-cybertruck-electric-pickup-reveal "The Cybertruck has been crafted to "meet or exceed an F-150. If the F-150 can do it then a Tesla truck should be able to do it." Musk suggested it has a bold "cyberpunk" design, "like it came out of a sci-fi movie." It seems the rest of us will get to determine whether that's accurate in a couple of weeks. Musk also noted the reveal date is "strangely familiar." The classic cyberpunk movie Blade Runner is set in Los Angeles in November 2019, after all." repots Engadget. https://www.engadget.com/2019/11/06/tesla-electric-pickup-truck-event-elon-musk/ "It's not clear if this "Cybertruck" will be a production vehicle or just a concept. Musk first brought up a pickup truck back in 2017 and said it would show up in no more than 24 months. For once, he was right on the money for a timeline because here we are, two years later." says CNET: "In the time since this Tesla pickup was announced as part of the company's future lineup, things have certainly changed. Companies like Rivian have attracted a lot of attention with electric pickup trucks. The startup has also received investments from Amazon and even Ford. Meanwhile, legacy automakers such as General Motors and Ford confirmed they have their own battery-electric pickup trucks coming.Traditional automakers have typically had the pickup segment locked down, so it remains to be seen if Tesla can take a stab at it. Yet, if there's anything we've learned watching Tesla over the past few years, it's to never count the company out." https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/tesla-electric-pickup-truck-cybertruck-reveal/ BMW GROUP CONTINUES TO EXPAND CHARGING INFRASTRUCTURE FOR ELECTRIFIED VEHICLES "The BMW Group is setting the course for the electric future of mobility and will install over 4,100 charging points for electrified vehicles at its German locations by 2021." according to BMW: "The new charging infrastructure enables BMW Group employees to charge their cars conveniently at their workplace with attractive conditions. The plans for Germany include mainly AC (alternating current) fast charging stations with an output of 11kW, but also DC (direct current) fast charging stations with an output of 50kW. The power supply comes from renewable energies. The majority of the charging points will be installed in the greater Munich area." https://www.press.bmwgroup.com/global/article/detail/T0302391EN/bmw-group-continues-to-expand-charging-infrastructure-for-electrified-vehicles?language=en OPEL VIVARO-E STARTS IN 2020 The electrification offensive from Opel continues: as of 2020, the Opel Vivaro will also be offered as a pure battery electric version. Customers can then choose between two sizes of battery, depending on their needs. The new Opel Vivaro-e will be available with a 50kWh battery for a range of up to 200 kilometres or a 75kWh battery for up to 300km according to WLTP1. Emissions-free deliveries are becoming increasingly important in urban areas and the demand for purely electric light commercial vehicles will rise accordingly. https://int-media.opel.com/en/11-05-opel-vivaro-e-starts-in-2020 VIRGIN MEDIA CONSORTIUM TO HELP REVOLUTIONISE ON-STREET ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING "Leveraging Virgin Media’s 40,000 powered street cabinets and 170,000 km of ducts, Liberty Global’s project has been created in partnership with Innovate UK, the UK government’s research and innovation department, to help local authorities find a solution to limited on-street electric vehicle charging points and thereby encourage more people to use electric vehicles." Jason Simpson, Vice President Global Energy and Utilities for Liberty Global, comments, “Leveraging street cabinets allows Liberty Global to look beyond traditional uses of telecom infrastructure and make a positive impact on the environment and in communities throughout the UK.” https://group.vattenfall.com/uk/newsroom/news-press-releases/pressreleases/2019/vattenfall-to-be-key-partner-in-virgin-media-consortium-to-help-revolutionise-on-street-electric-vehicle-charging INFINITI’S ELECTRIC APPROACH “Our new gas-generated EV powertrain represents the next step into our electrified future, acting as a bridge to full electrification and setting the tone of our upcoming zero and ultra-low emission cars. However they are powered, our cars will offer thrilling yet serene electric performance, and e-AWD systems which inspire driver confidence.” "The gas-generated EV powertrain is, in effect, a series hybrid. That is, there is an internal combustion engine that operates as a generator that charges the batteries, which, in turn, are used to power the motors that turn the wheels." reports ADandP.media: "It is worth noting that Infiniti is undertaking a “two powertrains, one platform” approach that will accommodate both this gas-generated EV powertrain and fully electric powertrains. This will simplify production through the commonality. For the full EV the space between the axles will be used to accommodate the battery pack; for the gas-generated EV, the space will include a smaller battery pack, the fuel tank and the exhaust system." https://www.adandp.media/blog/post/infinitis-electric-approach QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week… What do you prefer, the carrot or the stick? Called the ADAC e-Rally Cup, the series replaces the ADAC Opel Rallye Cup collaboration that helped introduce fresh talent to rallying." reports evo.co.uk: "The Corsa-e Rally car itself shares an identical powertrain to that of the road-going hatchback, featuring a 136bhp synchronous electric motor mounted where the traditional internal combustion engine would normally sit under the front bonnet. The 50kWh battery pack is also carried over, which should help the e-Corsa complete more than a couple of special stages without needing a top-up." https://www.evo.co.uk/vauxhall/corsa/201649/new-vauxhall-corsa-e-to-race-in-e-rally-cup FIRST LEXUS EV COULD BE A HATCH, CONCEPT BOUND FOR 2019 TOKYO MOTOR SHOW Toyota is committed to launching at least 10 battery-electric cars by 2025, with the first expected to arrive in 2020. Some of these will come from Toyota's upmarket brand, Lexus, which may give us a preview of what's to come during October's Tokyo Motor Show. Citing comments made by Koji Sato, Lexus' chief engineer, Autocar reported Thursday that Lexus will present an EV concept at its home show that may just preview an upcoming production model." reports Motor Authority: "It's possible the concept will be an evolution of 2015's LF-SA minicar concept, a vehicle that fits the description above. And though the LF-SA concept hasn't been confirmed for production, Lexus is rumored to be looking at adding a model smaller than the UX subcompact SUV." https://www.motorauthority.com/news/1124681_first-lexus-ev-could-be-a-hatch-concept-bound-for-2019-tokyo-motor-show 2020 CHEVROLET BOLT EV GETS MORE RANGE "The 2020 Chevrolet Bolt EV is now rated with a 259 miles (417 km) EPA range and surpasses its most direct alternatives. The alternative that almost matches its range is the 2019 Hyundai Kona Electric with 258 miles range, which is just 1 mile less." says Pedro for PushEVs: "The 2019 Chevrolet Bolt EV and previous model years had an EPA range of 238 miles (367 km), so this latest upgrade in battery capacity represents a 9 percent range increase.the Chevrolet Bolt EV still doesn’t have ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control). This electric car and the new Renault ZOE are probably the only mass production electric cars with decent range that still don’t have this important safety feature for less stressful driving." https://pushevs.com/2019/08/22/2020-chevrolet-bolt-ev-gets-more-range/ SINGAPORE FORGOES TESLA'S ELECTRIC 'LIFESTYLE' FOR BUSES "Singapore is in no rush to adopt a certain brand of electric car. In an interview with Bloomberg published today, a government minister offered a rebuttal to Tesla founder Elon Musk's criticism that the city-state is "unwelcome" to electric cars. Investing in mass transit -- rather than Tesla Superchargers -- is how the nation of slightly less than 6 million inhabitants wants to tackle climate change" writes Engadget today. Singapore has embraced electric public buses and is working on developing a system of self-driving, electric taxis. It certainly hasn't ruled out electric cars completely. Last October, British company Dyson Ltd announced that Singapore would be the manufacturing base for its first electric car." https://www.engadget.com/2019/08/22/singapore-forgoes-teslas-electric-lifestyle-for-buses/ STUDY LINKS SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE TO PM POLLUTION TO RISK OF PREMATURE DEATH "A major new international study shows independent associations between short-term exposure to PM10 and PM2.5 and daily all-cause, cardiovascular, and respiratory mortality in more than 600 cities across the globe." says Green Car Congress: "The study, led by Dr. Haidong Kan from Fudan University in China, analyzed data on air pollution and mortality in 652 cities across 24 countries and regions, and found increases in total deaths are linked to exposure to inhalable particles (PM10) and fine particles (PM2.5)" An article from the Telegraph in 2015 talked about the history of PM being in the news: "Particulates – tiny sooty particles in the air – were the first of the pollutants to be identified as toxic, 22 years ago, in a big Harvard study. The seminal 1993 research, dubbed “the six cities study” compared mortality rates in half a dozen representative US urban areas, following the fates of 8,111 adults for at least 14 years." https://www.greencarcongress.com/2019/08/20190822-nejm.html https://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/car-manufacturers/volkswagen/11899676/The-statistics-about-diesel-are-crystal-clear.-Its-deadly.html AUDI E-TRON NAVIGATION SYSTEM PROVIDES DETAILED PETROL INFORMATION "The e-tron’s navigation system was recently observed to have a very interesting, and notably humorous feature: it gives drivers useful information about nearby petrol stations and current gas prices." says Simon at Teslarati: "As noted by drivers who shared images of the e-tron’s navigation in action, the all-electric SUV’s infotainment screen displays information about petrol stations on a selected route. The information is quite detailed too, as it includes the current price of petrol in selected locations." https://www.teslarati.com/audi-e-tron-navigation-gas-stations-diesel-prices/ COMMUNITY The MYEV.com Question Of The Week. Show #498 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 12th June 2019. I have got a mega Patreon update to do… Last we heard was from new Producer CHRISTIAN MARLER and EXEC PRODUCER PONTUS KINDBLAD. Next up is new EXEC PRODUCER PERRY SIMPKINS. Then JONATHAN PRICE UK signed up as a PRODUCER. And GREG BAILEY as PRODUCER. Over the weekend new EXEC PRODUCER MICHAEL KYFFIN (KUFFIN). And new PRODUCERS GILL NOWELL and MARK SANDERS. As if that wasn't enough, PAUL RIDINGS moved up to EXEC PRODUCER. And then three new PRODUCERS MICHAEL YOUNG, STEPHEN BROOK and MIKE IN OKLAHOMA. RENAULT ZOE NEO ZE50 As a Renault Zoe owner I am looking forward to the new one, the ZE50 or Zoe Neo, or whatever we're calling it. The embargo gets lifted Monday and I haven't been told anything so this is all speculation. But a 50kWh battery, with CCS plug and 22kW AC charging makes for a very flexible car. And not one of the Dutch journalists who attended Paris this week for the media day and took pics, has posted them online. They've kept the styling rather than make it look like a Clio with batteries. It's good to see the LED lights and the front parking sensors. 200KW CHARING FOR MODEL 3 IN EUROPE Starting last weekend, a firmware update will begin to roll out to all Model 3 with the Long Range battery in Europe. It will allow these cars to charge at up to 200 kW which equates to 850 miles per hour of range recovery. This means the fastest-charging cars in the world will be European Model 3 Long Range — charging on European ultrafast charging networks (such as Ionity, Fastned, and Allego). “As we work towards the introduction of V3 Supercharging in Europe, we’re releasing an early software update to European Model 3 Long Range customers that will allow them to charge at hundreds of third party fast-charging stations – up to 200kW. When our own V3 Supercharger technology is introduced, these cars will be able to charge even faster at 250kW peak charge rates. Tesla vehicles benefit from the most extensive charging network in the world by having access to Tesla chargers like our Supercharger network, as well as publicly-available EV charging networks.” TESLA ROADSTER’S SPECIAL STEERING WHEEL IN ACTION "Tesla’s next-gen Roadster prototype had an outing this week and it gave us a rare look at the electric hypercar’s special steering wheel in action. When Tesla unveiled the next-gen Roadster prototype back in 2017, it was equipped with a butterfly steering wheel. Butterfly steering wheels are not street legal in most markets, but an engineer at the launch event said that the automaker aims to release it in the production version." according to Fred at Electrek: "It offers very little grip space and for the first time, we clearly see someone doing two rotations for a short turn." https://electrek.co/2019/06/12/tesla-roadster-steering-wheel-action/ ELECTRIFY AMERICA AND CHARGEPOINT ANNOUNCE INTEROPERABILITY AGREEMENT "If you're an EV driver, you've probably got apps and/or cards for multiple charging networks. It's part of life if you charge in public with much frequency. One of those accounts is probably with Chargepoint. Perhaps you have a membership with the rapidly expanding Electrify America network, too. Pretty soon, though, you'll only need one or the other, as Electrify America and Chargepoint have announced an interoperability agreement, meaning if you're a member of one, you can charge with the other network." says Autoblog: "The partnership, which goes into effect later this year, will combine access to more than 30,000 Level 2 and DC fast chargers. While this may not be super important to current EV drivers, who very well might already be using both networks individually, it simplifies things quite a bit for new adopters to have two of the country's largest networks working together." https://www.autoblog.com/2019/06/11/electrify-america-chargepoint-network-interoperability/ NORWAY HYDROGEN STATION EXPLODES, TOYOTA AND HYUNDAI HALT SALES "A hydrogen station in Norway experienced an explosion on Monday, and the company who runs the station has since shut down 10 other hydrogen stations, according to several local sources. The station was in a suburb of the country's capital of Oslo. As of now, Nel Hydrogen (company who supplied the hydrogen and equipment) doesn't have an official explanation for the cause of the explosion." reports Autoblog: "Two people were taken to the hospital after the force of the blast caused the airbags to deploy in their car nearby. n response to the incident, both Toyota and Hyundai have halted sales of their hydrogen-powered cars in Norway. The stations that Nel Hydrogen shut down are located across both Norway and other countries in Europe." https://www.autoblog.com/2019/06/12/norway-hydrogen-station-explodes-toyota-hyundai-halt-sales/ TOYOTA MIRAI GETS DEEPEST DISCOUNT YET—AMID HYDROGEN SHORTAGE "The two modest fuel-cell models you can currently purchase (versus lease) both carry luxury-vehicle prices: a base $59,430 for the 2019 Toyota Mirai and a base $59,345 for the eco-focused Hyundai Nexo Blue. Trade-in or resale value remains an unknown. And at the last time we filled with hydrogen, last October, it cost $17.49 per kilogram—potentially up to a $75 fill for the 312-mile Mirai or a $110 fill for the 380-mile Nexo Blue." says Green Car Reports: "ighly subsidized leases factor in at $349 and $399 per month for the Mirai and Nexo, respectively, or $379 for the other lease-only alternative, the Honda Clarity Fuel Cell. And all three include a big bank of subsidized hydrogen that will help ease at least the cost concern of refueling." https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1123535_toyota-mirai-gets-deepest-discount-yet-in-the-midst-of-hydrogen-shortage TESLA SOARS PAST 40K TOTAL REGISTRATIONS IN NORWAY, MODEL 3 LEADS THE CHARGE "Tesla soars past 40k total registrations in Norway, Model 3 leads the charge" says Teslarati: "The Model S now makes up about 50% with nearly 20,000 registrations, the Model X at 30% with over 12,000 registrations, and the Model 3 represents about 20% with nearly 8,000 registrations. However, Model 3 sales have consistently represented the majority of Tesla’s month-to-month sales in Norway since the all-electric midsize sedan began arriving in February." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-passes-40k-total-registrations-in-norway/ UK BECOMES FIRST MAJOR NATION TO LEGISLATE NET ZERO EMISSIONS "The United Kingdom has become the first major economy to legislate long-term climate targets this week as outgoing Prime Minister Theresa May announced new legislation on Wednesday which will enshrine into law a net zero emissions by 2050 target." reports Clean Technica: "Even as she is effectively being pushed out the door of Number 10 Downing Street, Prime Minister Theresa May is looking to leave some legacy behind her — other than the catastrophic handling of the UK’s “Brexit” negotiations. Announced on Wednesday, Theresa May said that she would introduce a statutory instrument in Parliament to amend the Climate Change Act of 2008 to enter into law a commitment to “eradicate” the country’s “contribution to climate change by 2050.” According to the UK government, this legislation is the first among G7 nations and is expected to encourage other major economies to follow the UK’s lead. " https://cleantechnica.com/2019/06/12/uk-becomes-first-major-nation-to-legislate-net-zero-emissions/ FRANCE TO UPHOLD BAN ON SALE OF FOSSIL FUEL CARS BY 2040 Meanwhile a Reuters report today says: "The French government's new law on mobility will uphold a planned ban on fossil fuel-powered cars by 2040, Transport Minister Elizabeth Borne said on Tuesday. Former environment minister Nicolas Hulot said in July 2017 — at the beginning of President Emmanuel Macron's term — that France aimed to end the sale of gasoline and diesel vehicles by 2040 in a bid to become carbon neutral by 2050. The mobility law will also facilitate the rollout of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, notably by giving the residents of apartment buildings the right to ask for the installation of EV plugs in their parking lots." https://www.autoblog.com/2019/06/11/france-ban-fossil-fuel-cars-2040/ VOLKSWAGEN DRIVER FAILS TO INFLATE TIRES WITH DC FAST CHARGER "Some electric car stories can really lighten the mood and provide some humor and here is one of such stories from some right-hand-drive market (maybe Victoria, Australia)." says InsideEVs: "As you can see, the two parked an internal combustion engine car at a DC fast charger (which was a bad idea to begin with) and started preparation to inflate the front tires! Can you imagine? The driver grabbed the CCS Combo 2 plug and quickly figured out it's not going to work. Second try... with CHAdeMO plug didn't help either. Well, we've got a long way to go in regards to raising awareness it seems." https://insideevs.com/news/354461/video-driver-failed-inflate-tires-fast-charger/ COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Telsa Model 3 Order Email Exchange from a Patreon Supporter Update on Tesla Solar+Powerwall option when ordering a Model 3. I was on the UK Model 3 configurator today, checking prices so I'm up to date. And on the final page they now present a new option for Solar + Storage: "Produce and store your own clean energy to power your home and charge your car, day and night." A BATCH OF 250 TESLA POWERWALLS ARE GOING TO THE UK "Tesla has been having a tough time ramping up its Powerwall production, but we are now starting to see more projects including a new batch of 250 Tesla Powerwalls going to the UK." says electrek, quoting Tonik Energy: "Tonik Energy announces that they are the first UK energy supplier to offer the state-of-the-art Tesla Powerwall. Following a successful pilot programme, Tonik has commenced rolling out 250 Powerwalls to homes across the UK, with installations performed by their in-house team." https://electrek.co/2019/06/04/tesla-powerwalls-going-uk/ GM, FIAT CHRYSLER ADMIT BUYING REGULATORY CREDITS "Amidst reports on Tesla’s varying stock price, sales, and competition, the news is that the electric car maker has been making good money by selling greenhouse gas credits to fellow carmakers." says ibtimes.com: "According to filings by General Motors (GM) and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) to the state of Delaware, GM's agreement with Tesla for greenhouse gas credits was inked on Feb. 25. The filings affirmed how established carmakers such as GM and Fiat Chrysler have been relying on Tesla to comply with the United States’ environmental regulations. Tesla has generated almost $2 billion in revenue from the sale of regulatory credits since 2010." https://www.ibtimes.com/tesla-rescue-gm-fiat-chrysler-admit-buying-regulatory-credits-musks-company-2797469 VW'S FIRST ELECTRIC CAR ALREADY HAS OVER 20,000 RESERVATIONS "Preorders for Volkswagen's first production EV are running ahead of schedule. That's according to VW board member Jürgen Stackmann, who tweeted on Tuesday that the German automaker now has over 20,000 "pre-bookings" for its battery-powered ID 3 small car." reports CNET: "European order books for the five-door hatchback opened one month ago, and according to Stackmann, the German automaker was hoping to reach 30,000 reservations by the time the IAA -- the Frankfurt Motor Show -- opened its doors in mid-September. While 20,000 ID 3 reservations are a drop in the bucket compared to the 400,000-plus reservations that the Tesla Model 3 claimed upon its introduction, VW's total is somewhat encouraging, especially as reservations require a 1,000-euro refundable deposit (around $1,100, £885 and AU$1,610)." https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/vw-id3-electric-car-reservations-ev/ 2020 SEAT MII ELECTRIC REVEALED IN PRODUCTION FORM "SEAT has confirmed it will launch an electric version of its Mii city car in the autumn of this year, marking the brand’s first foray into the zero-emission market."says Motor1.com: "Offering a provisional range of 161.5 miles (260 kilometers) on a single charge and boasting an 82-horsepower electric motor like that of the VW e-Up!, the little runabout will be imaginatively named the Mii Electric. SEAT says the new model, which is based on the gasoline-powered Mii that shares so much with the Skoda Citigo and Volkswagen Up!, will mix “dynamism, urban design, an advanced powertrain, and new levels of connectivity with affordability and low cost of ownership. 6.8-kWh battery pack. Show #481 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 24th May 2019. Tobev just became a $5 patron! Ahead of the #GreenTechFestival and as #Berlin gets set for its round of #ABBFormulaE, F1 world champion and @greentech_fest co-founder @Nico_Rosberg says the "awesome" series is "exactly what's needed" to drive the adoption of electric vehicles... [audio] LEAKED EMAIL REVEALS POSSIBLE RECORD TESLA DELIVERIES IN Q2 2019 "A recent email from Tesla CEO Elon Musk to all employees states that the automaker may be on track to have the best quarter of all time in terms of deliveries. If you thought that the Silicon Valley automaker couldn't easily top 2018 Q4 numbers, you may want to think again." reports InsideEVs: "Our good friends over at Teslarati first discovered the "alleged leaked" email via Chinese social media and stock trading website." "From: Elon Musk Date: Wed 5/22/2019 10:45 PM To: Everybody As of yesterday, we had over 50,000 net new orders for this quarter. Based on current trends, we have a good chance of exceeding the record 90,700 deliveries of Q4 last year and making this the highest deliveries/sales quarter in Tesla history! In order to achieve this, we need sustained output of 1,000 Model 3’s per day. Almost all parts of the Model 3 production system have exceeded 1000 units on multiple days (congratulations!!) and we’ve averaged about 900/day this week, so we’re only about 10% away from 7000/week. If we rally hard, we can do it! Thanks for your great work, Elon" https://insideevs.com/news/351085/tesla-model-3-q2-delivery-potential-leaked/ CONSUMER REPORTS: TESLA'S AUTOMATIC LANE CHANGES POSE SAFETY CONCERNS "Consumer Reports...has claimed that the latest version of the semi-autonomous driving feature poses "serious safety concerns," making automatic lane changes that are overly aggressive and don't properly anticipate human behavior. In tests, it would frequently cut off other drivers, pass on the right and have trouble anticipating fast-moving vehicles approaching from behind." says Engadget: "The outlet argued that companies should need to provide public evidence of a semi-autonomous system's safety before it's made available to buyers. It also contended that Navigate on Autopilot is more trouble than it's worth -- it's akin to "monitoring a kid behind the wheel for the very first time," CR's Jake Fisher said. While Tesla was still ahead of rivals on autonomy, CR thought that it was safer and more relaxing to perform lane changes yourself." https://www.engadget.com/2019/05/22/consumer-reports-tesla-navigate-on-autopilot-risk PURE-ELECTRIC VAUXHALL CORSA-E LEAKED AHEAD OF 2020 RELEASE "A pure-electric version of the next-generation Vauxhall Corsa is coming, as previewed by this leaked official image. When it goes on sale in the UK in early 2020, the Corsa-e will be the first new product produced by Vauxhall since it came under the ownership of Peugeot-Citroen (PSA). It will also launch the brand’s strategic push towards the electrified and all-electric market." according to AutoExpress: "The Vauxhall Corsa-e will sit on the same underpinnings as the recently-released Peugeot e-208. That means it should have a range of 211 miles, a 50kWh battery pack and a 134bhp electric motor driving the front wheels. Charge times should be identical, too, with an 80 per cent top-up taking 30 minutes using a 100kW fast charger." https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/vauxhall/corsa/102657/pure-electric-vauxhall-corsa-e-revealed-with-211-mile-range MERCEDES-BENZ EQB SEEN IN CAMOUFLAGE "Mercedes-Benz EQC, which recently entered production, is just the first of many new all-electric cars under the new EQ brand. The German manufacturer is busy at work, developing also the smaller Mercedes-Benz EQB, which was recently caught in camouflage by walkoARTvideos on streets." reports Motor1.com: "The EQB is related to the Mercedes-Benz GLB, which besides the all-electric cousin, will get a plug-in hybrid version too. Rumours say that EQB could be rated at 500 km (310 miles) of range under WLTP, while the GLB EQ Power will have up to 62 miles (100 km) of all-electric range." https://uk.motor1.com/news/350861/mercedes-benz-eqb-spy-video/ RENAULT TO PRODUCE CAR-SHARE READY ZOE EV FOR FLEETS "Vulog, the supplier of shared mobility technology, announced a partnership with Renault, which will result in production of car-sharing ready vehicles." pick up InsideEVs today: "Starting immediately, Renault will be able to produce ZOE equipped with Vulog’s car sharing hardware directly on its assembly line. In effect, fleets interested in car sharing are now able to order ZOE equipped for car sharing from the start, instead of retrofitting the car afterward and save some cost, we assume. The partnership between Renault and Vulog suggests that car sharing is now popular enough to incorporate it on a production line." "By the end of 2019, over 2,500 Renault ZOEs equipped with Vulog’s car sharing technology will be in market, initially in northern Europe, South America and the United Arab Emirates." https://insideevs.com/news/350855/renault-produce-car-share-ready-zoe/ TEXAS LOOKS TO BOOST FEES ON EV’S TO FUND HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE "Texas is considering whether to impose additional registration fees on electric and hybrid vehicles, following nearly half the states that already impose higher fees on battery powered vehicles to compensate for lost gasoline taxes used to maintain roads and highways." says the Houston Chronicle: "The bills in Texas are unlikely to get through the legislative session, which ends Monday, but the issue is almost certain to resurface as Texas and other states wrestle with depleted highway funds as cars become more fuel efficient and federal gas taxes remain unchanged from their levels 26 years ago. With electric vehicles representing 2 percent of U.S. vehicle sales last year, lawmakers look to revamp the way the nation pays for its transportation network." A Green Car Reports Twitter poll last week timed well with this story as I've just seen the results: "The largest group of respondents agreed that per-mile fees seemed fairest, with 42 percent of our respondents choosing that option. Some commenters noted that many states already require safety inspections which record vehicle mileage, which could be used to track the mileage. The second-largest group, at 29 percent, favored the approach that most states seem to have taken (those states that try to raise highway funds from EVs at all, anyway), registration fees." https://www.houstonchronicle.com/business/energy/article/Texas-other-states-look-to-boost-fees-on-EV-s-13877118.php https://www2.greencarreports.com/news/1123208_how-should-ev-owners-pay-for-road-maintenance-twitter-poll-results HE BUILT AN EV IN HIS GARAGE. 10 YEARS LATER, HYUNDAI IS GIVING HIM $90 MILLION "The story of Croatia-based Rimac Automobili, which just might be the most unlikely of success stories. That’s because the company was established in 2009 by then-21-year-old Mate Rimac, who built an electric car in his garage." reports ThomasNet: "Ten years later, Rimac is all grown up and employs 500 workers. The company also recently announced an influx of cash from a joint effort by Hyundai and Kia. The automakers will dump about $90 million into the electric vehicle maker and also plan to establish a strategic partnership where they’ll collaborate on high-performance EVs" https://news.thomasnet.com/featured/at-21-he-built-an-ev-in-his-garage-10-years-later-hyundai-is-giving-him-90-million/ HYUNDAI KONA ELECTRIC INDIA LAUNCH ON JULY 9, 2019 "Hyundai will launch its first all-electric model in India, the Kona Electric, on July 9, 2019." Autocar says: "We had first reported in March last year that Hyundai had plans to bring its electric SUV to India, along with its plans to locally assemble to keep prices in check. Hyundai isn’t expecting to sell more than 60 units a month of the Kona Electric." https://www.autocarindia.com/car-news/hyundai-kona-electric-india-launch-on-july-9-2019-412829 FIRST DEBUT ON THE ROAD FOR THE CUPRA FORMENTOR PLUG-IN HYBRID The Cupra Formentor has made its dynamic debut around the roads of Cap de Formentor, Mallorca, from which it takes its name. The plug-in hybrid SUV is the first model developed specifically by Cupra and made its public static debut at Geneva Motor Show earlier this year. According to rumors the Cupra Formentor will be on sale starting from the beginning of 2020. http://www.magnetimarelli.com/focus-on-automotive/first-debut-road-cupra-formentor-plug-hybrid UPDATE ON CARLOS GHOSN "Nissan's former chairman, Carlos Ghosn, appeared in a Japanese courtroom Thursday for a hearing ahead of his trial on accusations of financial misconduct. It was the first of a series of hearings to iron out logistics for Ghosn's actual trial. The trial date has not been set, and experts say it could be months away." writes SFGate.com: "Ghosn insists he is innocent and says he was targeted in a "conspiracy" by others at Nissan Motor Co Nissan, which is allied with Renault SA of France, has seen profits nose-dive amid the fallout from Ghosn's arrest." https://www.sfgate.com/news/crime/article/Former-Nissan-chairman-Ghosn-appears-in-Tokyo-13878054.php MEANWHILE...NISSAN IS THINKING ABOUT BATTERIES "Data from Nissan shows the batteries used by its Leaf electric car will outlast the vehicle by 10-12 years, said Francisco Carranza, managing director of Renault-Nissan Energy Services. Nissan monitors everything from charging patterns to battery degradation on the more than 400,000 Leafs it has sold in Europe since launching the first generation in 2011." reports Autonews Europe: "Based on the average of life of a car at 10 years, Carranza put the battery life at 22 years. “We are going to have to recover those batteries,” Carranza told the Automotive News Europe Congress here on Wednesday. Nissan has been looking at ways to boost revenue from electric cars for itself and its customers as traditional revenue streams dry up in the switch from combustion cars to electric cars. “Aftersales revenue will massively suffer from electrification,” Carranza said. https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/nissan-looks-ways-use-long-lasting-ev-batteries COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Show #458 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 29th April 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. KIA NIRO EV NOW OFFICIALLY ON SALE IN U.S. "The highly anticipated Kia Niro EV has finally gone on sale in the U.S. It took longer than expected, but the long-range electric crossover from Kia is now officially on sale in the U.S. In fact, some deliveries have already commenced. The Kia Niro EV is similar to the Hyundai Kona Electric, though the Niro has much more rear seat legroom, something that is sorely lacking in the Kona Electric." reports Eric Loveday for InsideEVs.com. One of the comments on the new look forum: "Looking forward to sitting in one. This weekend for the first time we sat in a number os EVs in trying to determine which one best suits us. First we went to Tesla and sat in a Model 3. It was WAY smaller than i expected, I'm 6'2" and my son is taller than I am. We barely had headroom in the rear seats. Next we went to Hyundai and sat in the Kona and Ioniq and both weren't even close to having headroom in the rear seats. Last we went and sat in a Chevy Bolt. More rear seat headroom than the Hyundais, but less headroom than that Model 3. So, funny how we thought the Model 3 was cramped, but by the end of the day the other cars made the Model 3 seem cavernous." https://insideevs.com/news/347047/video-kia-niro-ev-sales-u-s/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all- ALL-NEW PEUGEOT E-208 ON SALE IN UK "The new Peugeot e-208 electric city car offers a lively and stimulating drive thanks to its 100% electric engine. BMW I4 EV'S INTERIOR SPIED FOR THE FIRST TIME "We have seen the BMW i4 out testing a couple times before, but now our spy shooters have captured interior shots of BMW's upcoming electric sedan. And, surprise! It looks just like a normal BMW. Judging by how conventional this EV looks from the outside, a regular BMW interior does not shock us." writes Autoblog today: "This i4 seems to be a big step in the "normal" direction for BMW's i division. Obviously a lot of the interior is still covered up in these photos, but our clear view of the infotainment screen, climate controls and gear shift is enough to make such a judgment." https://www.autoblog.com/2019/04/29/bmw-i4-ev-interior-spy-photos/ IONITY TO BUILD ULTRA-FAST CHARGING STATIONS FOR EUROPEAN UNION "IONITY happily announced that it secured EUROP-E funding from the European Union for the Pan-European EV infrastructure across 13 countries (from Poland to Portugal and from Sweden to Italy)." says InsideEVs.com: "According to the press release, some 340 ultra-fast chargers (350 kW each) will be installed across 13 EU Member States by Q8 and IONITY for a total of €195.5 million ($218 million), including €39.1 million ($43.6 million) from EU (largest ever EU co-funded vehicle charging infrastructure project)." https://insideevs.com/news/346808/ionity-fast-charging-european-union/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all- DAIMLER PULLS THE PLUG ON ELECTRIC SMART CAR SALES IN US, CANADA "Daimler is ending sales of its diminutive all-electric smart fortwo cars in the U.S. and Canada, officially pulling the plug on a vehicle that has struggled to gain ground in North America as the German automaker prepares to bring the brand to China, TechCrunch has learned." according to Tech Crunch: "Smart won’t be sold in the U.S. and Canada after the 2019 model year, Daimler AG confirmed after two sources familiar with the decision shared the information with TechCrunch. Daimler isn’t killing off the smart vehicle altogether. Daimler announced in March it was forming a joint venture with Zhejiang Geely Holding Group to transform smart into an all-electric brand based in China. Under the agreement, the quirky vehicles will be assembled at a new factory in China. Global sales are expected to begin in 2022, Daimler said at the time." https://techcrunch.com/2019/04/29/daimler-pulls-the-plug-on-electric-smart-car-sales-in-u-s-canada/ LOS ANGELES JUST ANNOUNCED ITS OWN GREEN NEW DEAL TO DRASTICALLY SLASH EMISSIONS "Los Angeles just announced its own Green New Deal to drastically slash emissions" says Fast Company: "The city is also building the infrastructure to help people who keep driving make the switch to electric cars—including 25,000 new electric charging stations by 2025. School buses and taxis will reach zero emissions by 2028; urban delivery vehicles will reach that goal by 2035. By 2050, every vehicle in the city will have zero emissions." https://www.fastcompany.com/90340978/los-angeles-just-announced-its-own-green-new-deal-to-drastically-slash-emissions TESLA PATENT APPLICATION LOOKS AT A SUNROOF WITH INTEGRATED LIGHTING, DIMMING "Tesla's latest patent application shows that the future could be looking very bright -- or dim, depending on your preference." reports CNET: "The application outlines a sunroof sandwiched with a variety of layers that give an otherwise normal piece of glass a few different advantages. The first of these is a layer of electrically controllable dimming material that is able to limit the amount of light that enters through the sunroof. Embedded within the sunroof is yet another layer that is capable of generating light. This way, the sunroof can still provide limited illumination in the cabin when an exterior source isn't present." https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/tesla-patent-application-sunroof-integrated-lighting-dimming/ TESLA BOOSTS REFERRAL PROGRAM BY 500% FOR A LIMITED TIME "Just over a month after completely revamping its referral program, Tesla is now boosting it by 500% for a limited time ahead of the end of the quarter." says Fred at Electrek: "Last month, the automaker decided to relaunch the program with a completely different structure based on giving free Supercharging miles and chances to win a Model Y and new Roadster. Tesla started giving 1,000 miles of free Supercharging to both the owner giving the referral and the new buyer receiving the referral. Today, the company updated the program to give it a ‘500% Supercharging boost’." "“You and anyone using your referral code to buy a Tesla will receive 7,500 free Supercharger kms! On May 28, this will revert back to 1,500 kms. Each referral now also gives you five chances to win a Founders Series Model Y or Roadster supercar! Tesla owners who already have free Supercharging get ten chances to win.”" https://electrek.co/2019/04/28/tesla-boosts-referral-program/ COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. TESLA UNLOCKS V2 SUPERCHARGER 145 KW RATE VIA NEW SOFTWARE UPDATE "Tesla is now applying its innovative over-the-air software update ability to enable 145 kW-charging for the Model 3. We’re looking at an increase in charging rate of upwards of some 20 percent. Keep in mind, this is prior to the mass implementation of Tesla’s sought-after V3 (250 kW) Superchargers coming online and expanding incrementally." Says Steven Loveday for InsideEVs today: According to Tesla, as reported by Teslarati, the V2 Supercharging software upgrade will push the company’s current Supercharger rate from 120 kW to 145 kW. Tesla is now working on a global level to push its current systems to accept this update. Recent images shared on Reddit show that updated Model 3 vehicles see a 147 kW charge (some 600 miles per hour) on today’s technology. This means that the cars can charge at that rate prior to the implementation of V3 Superchargers." https://insideevs.com/tesla-unlocks-v2-supercharger-145-kw-rate/ FORD F-150 EV SPIED TRYING TO HIDE IT'S ELECTRIC "New spy shots provide a fresh look at the development of the Ford F-150 EV. At first glance, you might suspect this is just a normal F-150, but these shots reveal some of the EV's special details." According to Chris Heck or Motor1.com: "At the back, the Blue Oval's engineers want to fool you by mounting an exhaust on the passenger side. However, these photos reveal it's actually just a pipe without a connection to anything, in addition to the picture catching the truck's independent rear suspension layout. Our spies also note that the F-150 EV rides slightly higher than the standard model to fit the batteries underneath the cab. The extra height doesn't look too substantial over the existing pickup, though. Specs for the electric F-150 aren't yet available. However, the test mules in these spy photos are reportedly very early prototypes for developing the necessary technology and don't reflect what Ford intends to sell to consumers when this vehicle finally comes to market. " https://www.motor1.com/news/315311/ford-f-150-ev-spy-shots/ TESLA MODEL 3 DRIVERS REACH OVER 1 BILLION ELECTRIC MILES IN RECORD TIME "After just over a year since starting deliveries, Tesla Model 3 drivers have already reached over 1 billion electric miles in record time." Writes Fred Lambert for Electrek today: "We were able to track the progress through the Tesla road trip page and Tesla confirmed that its global fleet reached over 5 billion electric miles driven in July 2017. Tesla removed the counter from the Tesla road trip page and we haven’t been able to track the fleet mileage since, but a source familiar with the data point confirmed to Electrek that the fleet surpassed 9 billion total miles at the end of last year." @Tesla Over 1 billion miles have been driven with Model 3 – thank you to all the amazing Tesla owners who got us here! http://tesla.com/3 4:40 PM - Mar 23, 2019 https://electrek.co/2019/03/25/tesla-model-3-drivers-1-billion-miles/ TESLA INCREASES MODEL Y PRICES BY $1,000, PLUS 3% INCREASE ON INVENTORY CARS Tesla Model Y Design Studio lists three versions of the Model Y and prices all of them were increased by $1,000 (compared to initial pricing revealed at the unveiling) to stay in line with the rest of the lineup. The new prices in the U.S. are: Performance – $61,000 (Fall 2020) Long Range AWD – $52,000 (Fall 2020) Long Range RWD – $48,000 (Fall 2020) At the current stage, we don’t know yet whether the Standard battery version (not yet listed in the shop) will be increased by $1,000 from $39,000 to $40,000 too. It’s expected that previously placed orders for the Model Y (before the price bump) will be honored. Anyways, with at least 1.5 years to first deliveries, prices will most likely change a few more times. https://insideevs.com/tesla-increase-model-y-price/ FIRST UK ORDER FOR THE ELECTRIC PEUGEOT E-208 PLACED ON THE SAME DAY AS ITS PUBLIC DEBUT Car buyers usually wait until they can drive a new model before signing on the dotted line but one PEUGEOT customer couldn’t even wait to see the all-new e-208 before placing a deposit. On the same day the all-new PEUGEOT e-208 made its public world debut at the Geneva Motor Show, Neal Street paid a deposit at Truscott’s PEUGEOT Barnstable to secure one of the very first vehicles to arrive in the UK. He wanted to be at the front of the queue and placed his order before official order books opened. Street, a self-confessed car enthusiast, wasn’t put off by the fact PEUGEOT is yet to confirm UK pricing. As part of PEUGEOT’s ambition to provide an electrified version of every model in its range by 2023, the 100% electric all-new e-208 is powered by a 100kW motor and features a 50kWh battery, delivering a zero-emission range of up to 211 miles (WLTP) from a full charge. BMW X1 XDRIVE25LE DEBUTS IN CHINA WITH 68 MILES OF ELECTRIC RANGE "After launching a plug-in hybrid version of the X1 in China back in September 2016, BMW is now introducing a revised variant of the vehicle which carries the X1 xDrive25Le name. Oddly enough, the Bavarian company is not ready to release official images of the PHEV and says it will show the car at the upcoming Auto Shanghai 2019 next month." Reports Anthony Carr for Motor1.com US today: "The PHEV X1 hides a new package of lithium-ion high-voltage batteries with increased capacity and a nickel, cobalt, and manganese ratio of 8:1:1, which means the use of nickel is expanded seriously. This increases the density and also leads to smaller usage of rare earth material like the cobalt. It is based on the LWB model and features a smart battery technology which allows for a range of 68 miles (110 kilometers) on purely electric energy, but bear in mind this is measured by the overly optimistic NEDC cycle. " https://www.motor1.com/news/315247/bmw-x1-xdrive25le-china-debut/ JAGUAR J-PACE TO ARRIVE IN 2021 AS FLAGSHIP SUV Hilton Holloway for Autocar today says: "Jaguar’s upcoming J-Pace flagship SUV will be one of the first electrified models built on an all-new Jaguar Land Rover platform – and a fully electric version is also likely to be made, according to sources. The J-Pace is thought to be just over two years from launch and will arrive at around the same time as the fifth-generation Range Rover." https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/jaguar-j-pace-arrive-2021-flagship-suv DACIA DUSTER EV MULE SPIED HINTING AT BRAND'S ELECTRIC FUTURE And finally something affordable spotted by Motor1.co. UK spy shots: This is an all-electric mule from Renault’s affordable brand, Dacia, and it is wearing the body of a first-gen Duster SUV. Renault is one of the most experienced mainstream manufacturers in the industry when it comes to electrification and it shouldn’t come as a surprise that its sister brand from Romania will benefit from the knowledge. Our spy photographers tell us these shots come from a frozen lake close to the Arctic Circle, where Renault Sport is actually working on a new contender for the Andros Trophy ice series. The competition is set to receive an all-electric class as a top tier in 2020 and, apparently, this car will soon morph into Dacia’s race car for the series." https://www.motor1.com/news/315180/dacia-duster-ev-mule-spied/ COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Welcome to new Patreon PRODUCER it’s ANTHONY CARROLL from Seattle, and thank you CHARLES HALL for increasing your support. More on the Tesla news from Tom Randall at Bloomberg: "The top-line performance Model 3 price declined to $58,000 from $60,900. That’s $20,000 cheaper than when it was first released last year. It’s also a bit quicker, going from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 3.2 seconds and having a top speed of 162 mph. Musk told reporters that making these final price cuts has been “excruciating,” and there will be no future price reductions to the Model 3. He declined to answer a question about the base model’s profitability. Tesla also reintroduced a lower-priced Model S sedan, which now starts at $79,000 with 270 miles of range. There’s also a long-range version starting at $83,000 with a 335-mile range, and a performance version starting at $99,000." NISSAN REVEALS U.S. PRICING FOR LEAF E-PLUS: COSTS MORE THAN MODEL 3 "Nissan has just revealed U.S. pricing for the 62-kWh version of the LEAF. Unfortunately, pricing seems a bit too high following yesterday’s $35,000 Tesla Model 3 announcement." says Eric Loveday for InsideEVs: "There’s a lot to like with this new LEAF. Its 62-kWh battery provides a range of up to 226 miles. Had it not been for Tesla shocking the world last night with the Model 3 base price announcement, we’d be rather excited for the LEAF. However, all versions of the LEAF e-Plus check in at a higher price than $35,000. Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Prices (MSRP) for the 2019 Nissan LEAF PLUS are: LEAF S PLUS $36,550 USD, LEAF SV PLUS $38,510 USD, LEAF SL PLUS $42,550 USD" Inside EVs Forum user Bloggin: "$35k gets you the standard Model 3, but who wants a Tesla without Autopilot?? Add the $3k and it’s $38k. Want a color other than black and now it’s $39,500. Want wheels other than black, now it’s $41k and well equipped and still below the Leaf SL at $42,550." And user Brian: "Leaf still qualifies for the full tax credit whereas Tesla only gets half. In four more months, Tesla will only get a fourth of the credit. By the time the Leaf loses the credit, Nissan will have put cash on the hood. So the e-Plus will always cost less than even a base Model 3." https://insideevs.com/nissan-u-s-pricing-leaf-e-plus/ PEUGEOT BRINGS FULLY ELECTRIC STAND TO GENEVA PEUGEOT will be showcasing its new plans for an electric future at the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show, unveiling the all-new 100% electric PEUGEOT e-208 alongside the all-new PEUGEOT 208 petrol and diesel variants and hybrid 508 PEUGEOT SPORT ENGINEERED Concept. Joining the new models will be a Plug-in Hybrid range and a revamped electrified version of the iconic PEUGEOT Lion. PEUGEOT will be unveiling the all-new PEUGEOT 208 model, which will be available with a choice of petrol and diesel powertrains along with a zero emission all-electric derivative, the all-new PEUGEOT e-208. Powered by a 100 kW motor, the all-new PEUGEOT e-208 will be the first electric model available from PEUGEOT’s new electric range. The 5-door hatchback features a 50kWh battery, positioned under the floor to maintain interior space, which provides a range of up to 211 miles (WLTP) from a full charge. The all-new PEUGEOT e-208 comes with three driving modes: Eco, to optimise range, Normal, tuned for comfort, and Sport, which puts the emphasis on performance. Customers can choose from a range of charging methods for the all-new PEUGEOT e-208, including 100 kW rapid charging, capable of 80% charge in 30 minutes. http://www.peugeotpress.co.uk/releases/1726 AUDI STAND AT GENEVA WILL BE EXCLUSIVELY ELECTRICELECTRIC/HYBRID "The Audi stand at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show will be exclusively occupied by electrically powered models, including the world premiere of the Audi Q4 e-tron concept and the European presentation of the Audi e-tron GT concept." according to Robin Whitlock for Renewable Energy Magazine: "In all, a total of four all-electric cars will headline for the brand, all of which will have been rolled out in series production form by the end of 2020. In addition four new plug-in hybrid models will also make their debuts, and the world of Formula E racing will be represented by the latest Audi e-tron FE05 racing car. Deliveries of the Audi e-tron, the first member of this new quartet of electric vehicles, are set to begin soon. The series-production version of its coupé equivalent, the Audi e-tron Sportback, will be introduced later in 2019. Another electric car – the Audi Q2 L e-tron - will be presented in a few weeks in China and will reach its first customers in that market in 2019. Two further series-production debuts will then follow in 2020: the Audi e-tron GT and Audi Q4 e-tron. Concept cars on the stand in Geneva provide a look at these two future models." https://www.renewableenergymagazine.com/electric_hybrid_vehicles/audi-stand-at-geneva-will-be-exclusively-20190228 SEAT SHOWS VW MEB-BASED EL-BORN EV IN GENEVA "We've already seen spy photos of the production version of Volkswagen's new Golf-sized fully electric car, alternatively referred to as the I.D. or the Neo. As an intent to show that the MEB platform underpinning the Volkswagen will be utilized on other Volkswagen group cars, Seat, the Spanish carmaker, has released images of its own take on the MEB architecture." reports Autoblog: "Volkswagen will bring the I.D. electric hatchback to market first, instead of using Seat to test the waters. But the Seat is hardly a second banana, as its figures are convincing enough: the 62-kWh battery pack gives it a range of 260 miles (on the WLTP cycle), and its 204-horsepower electric powertrain takes it to 62 mph in 7.5 seconds. With 100-kW DC charging, the battery reaches 80-percent capacity in 47 minutes. The VW version's production is slated to begin in November 2019." https://www.autoblog.com/2019/03/01/seat-el-born-ev-vw-meb-geneva/#slide-7533531 JAGUAR I-PACE NAMED UK CAR OF THE YEAR AWARD 2019 The Jaguar I-PACE has emerged victorious at the UK Car of the Year Awards 2019, after a closely fought battle with three other manufacturers. Having been named the Best Executive car when the category winners were announced in February, the Jaguar was pitted against the 11 other triumphant new cars to fight it out for the top honour. The UK Car of the Year Awards judges were quick to praise the attributes of Jaguar’s first electric vehicle. TV presenter Jonny Smith said: “Few traditional manufacturers can match the I-PACE for ground-up groundbreaking design and tech. A wonderful combo of unique design, spirited driving behaviour and useful EV range/rapid charge capability.” WHY HONDA BOSSES WEREN'T CONVINCED ABOUT THE E PROTOTYPE "The project manager of the Honda e prototype has admitted that the development team had to overcome opposition from company management before the car was confirmed for production." says Autocar: "The retro-styled electric-powered machine, whose styling closely resembles that of the Urban EV prototype, is a compact city car with a range of around 125 miles. Kohei Hitomi said Honda management was not initially convinced by the car's styling, small size and limited range. " He said: "“The positive feedback for the Urban EV concept car was certainly a breakthrough to convince internally that a small-size EV would make sense and be appreciated. I also tried to convince people that an EV is meant to be used in urban conditions, [where] the [small] size of the car is the most important aspect. That's where it makes most sense. From that perspective, the small size is the most important aspect, so that was how we tried to convince people. The concept helped the production car to get approval, and the production car helped the concept to look like what it looked like." https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/why-honda-bosses-werent-convinced-about-e-prototype KIA TO DISPLAY UPGRADED HYBRID NIRO MODELS AT GENEVA MOTOR SHOW "Kia has announced that refreshed versions of the Niro Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid will be make their public debut at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. Both models now come with an exterior design in-line with the all-electric e-Niro, an improved interior finish and new tech features." says Jack Healy for CarKeys: "The South Korean marque has given the Niro hybrid models new front and rear bumpers, redesigned headlights, LED daytime running lights, LED rear lights and new alloy wheel options. Inside, Kia has made significant tech upgrades in the form of the optional 10.25-inch widescreen touchscreen and seven-inch instrument cluster display, which can be fitted instead of the standard eight-inch infotainment screen and 4.2-inch instrument panel. Both versions of the Niro use a 1.6-litre petrol engine that is teamed with a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. The Hybrid pairs the combustion engine with a 1.56kWh lithium-ion battery pack, while the PHEV comes with an 8.9kWh unit." https://www.carkeys.co.uk/news/kia-to-display-upgraded-hybrid-niro-models-at-geneva-motor-show COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. TESLA LAUNCHES BACKUP POWER THROUGH POWERWALL 2 IN EUROPE WITH NEW HARDWARE Tesla is rolling out new hardware in the form of Backup Gateway 2 for Powerwall in the UK which will enable Powerwall to keep your home running in the event of a power cut. Powerwall detects grid outages and switches to become your home's main energy source, protecting your home from the next power outage and keeping your lights on, phones charged and no puddles under the fridge. In the event of a utility power outage, the Backup Gateway 2 immediately disconnects the home electrical system from the utility and restores power to the home. Whereas a traditional solar system typically shuts down during a grid outage to prevent any power from going back into the grid, because the Backup Gateway 2 manages the grid connection, solar can continue to operate. Powerwall can detect an outage, disconnect from the grid and bring power back to your home in a fraction of a second. The Tesla app provides notifications when Powerwall disconnects from and reconnects to the grid, allowing you to manage your home power consumption. Each Powerwall provides 13.5 kWh of usable energy for backup power when full. You can use the Tesla app to monitor your usage and conserve power to extend your backup coverage for a day or more. Additionally, when Powerwall is paired with solar it can continue to recharge and has the potential to run your home indefinitely. About Backup Gateway 2 As well as replacing non-Backup Gateway 1 in Europe, the new Backup Gateway 2 unlocks faster connectivity and a stronger connection providing reliable, real-time insights into your power usage. Powerwall is always paired with Tesla’s Gateway. Backup Gateway 2 provides high quality metering of your home and solar panel system, gives you access to the Tesla mobile app, communicates with the Tesla network, supports multi-Powerwall installation and enables seamless transition to backup during an outage. It’s now even easier to install. Backup Gateway 2 has integrated electrical connections (built-in site and PV metering, space for generation breakers), which eliminates the need for separate generation and load panels. A Tesla Spokesperson said: "“Rolling out in the UK this month, our new Backup Gateway 2 for Powerwall will enable a number of significant new features here and around the world for customers. It’s the first time that Backup hardware is available for Powerwall in Europe and we are excited to bring the new functionality alongside increased connectivity, a new design and easier installation.” NISSAN LEAF E+ ORDERS HIGH: PRODUCTION CAPACITY MIGHT BE AN ISSUE "Nissan announced earlier this month that it received more than 3,000 pre-orders for 3.ZERO Limited Edition of the LEAF e+ in Europe, from 5,000 units planned." reports Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com: "According to Ken Ramirez, Nissan Europe’s senior vice president sales and marketing, the first thousand pre-orders were placed in the first day and 3,000 were reached in mid-January, which seems to be just several days after announcing prices. The interest is so high that Nissan will need to “recalibrate” its expectations – in other words, there will again be a queue of customers waiting for their electric cars. Surprised? We aren’t. This seems to be the case with every new and compelling EVs these days." CHEVY VOLT PRODUCTION HAS OFFICIALLY COME TO AN END "It’s now official. Chevrolet has pulled the plug on production of its Volt. The plug-in hybrid that helped kick-start the electric vehicle revolution will no longer roll from the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant." says Domenick at InsideEVs: "This truly marks the end of an era. The car was very attractive to those who felt an all-electric couldn’t completely fulfill their needs. The 2019 edition can travel an EPA-rated 53 miles on a charge before the gas engine kicks in to keep the vehicle in motion. Indeed, it was a huge sales success in some parts of the U.S. and in 2018, it edged out its all-electric sibling the Chevy Bolt on our Plug-In Sales Scorecard by a few hundred units." https://insideevs.com/chevy-volt-production-officially-ends/ PEUGEOT E208 LEAKED New images have leaked of the Peugeot e208, 50kWh and 186miles (300km). One rumour says Later the year Peugeot will unveil a 72 kWh option coupled with a 150 kW motor (over 200 hp). QUESTION OF THE WEEK Eduard Pertíñez • 1 day ago Question of the week: I am pretty sure there is room for new car manufacturers coming in the future. ICE market was a closed one. Not only you had to create a very expensive engine, but you had to follow a strict very expensive regulation for pollution. Once the bar was high enough nobody could enter the market. But in the EV market you will not have to follow expensive regulations, neither you'll have to create very expensive motors. In few years there will be plenty of motors available in the market. Plenty of battery packs from different manufacturers. Once you have one of each, 70% of the job is done. Bill B • 4 days ago I remember when the Big Three in Detroit had it all here in the US. Take a look at the number of auto manufactures selling very well here in the US now. There is always room for a good deal in the US. A startup will have to have exceptional styling, performance and price point; along with service. That's a tough challenge in today's market but a company like Byton might make it. Cars from China may be the next auto invasion here in the US. Frederick Stirnkorb • 6 days ago I believe there is room for start ups in luxury and performance end like Rivian is pursuing. Also plenty of room in the commercial vehicle market. If someone can get the 4 billion in capital then go for it. Rambler Andy • 6 days ago Yes, there is plenty of room for start-ups, especially if they come as well prepared as Rivian, However, I wonder whether there will be another Tesla, that led the vanguard. Doing a Tesla is a great way to establish a brand, but it's a rocky road and the product has to be better than what is currently out there. That was easier when all there was was FFVs. So maybe only Tesla will survive as themselves. The rest being snapped up by big automotive or tech companies, who are relatively late to the game, and see that an acquisition gives them a passport to the EV world. Amazon could eventually and easily make Rivian a brand under its umbrella, and then transfer the Rivian technology to other EV start-ups, as it acquires them, that have something distinctive about them [like a good design and manufacturing facilities]. GM could snap up start-ups, having themselves production expertise, but forgotten electrical knowledge and no software to speak of. Bollinger could easily be snapped up for that very reason, and there are several other start-ups with the same potential. None of which have production vehicles, but have the zeitgeist in EV design and electrical expertise. D R-K • 1 week ago (edited) Yes, we have plenty of room for start ups. Tesla will not be the only one to make it as they ushered in this new era, because there are some fundamental hardships the big traditional companies have to face. Ass for the "flood " of cars, well, the numbers don't currently support that as of yet. There is plenty more demand than availability and still limited choice in price, style and segment. We have room and I look forward to who will be around in the coming ten years and beyond Neil E Roberts Whenever there is a major industry disruption and electrification of transport is definitely a major disruption, the incumbents always struggle to shift to the new model. Some make it, many won't. It tends to give small new companies who can be much more agile, lots of chances to grab market share. I think that in the next ten years, many of the well known brands will have gone completely or merged with others. We will see new companies which today are unknown. How exciting..... Leanne Roberts Absolutely, but if current car manufacturers have shown, it is going to take some considerable investment of which, many automakers have failed to correctly predict in terms of supply and demand. Examples being KIA eNiro, Hyundai Kona and VW e-Golf. I say bring it on as long as you have a huge amount to invest behind you to compete with current auto manufacturers in price and reliability of supply. Jon / Beardy McBeardface Regarding QOTW I think there is definitely space for start ups and imho they will bring the greatest innovations to market. Legacy car makers will, for the most part, play it safe. We are not seeing anything that makes me go WOW from VW, Nissan etc but the Sono with built in solar panels...wow! I know it’s cheeky and it’s ok if it can’t happen but when we get our weekly plugs could you mention the new Kent EV’s club that I am heading up please? Wednesday 23rd May 2018. First a word for any EV groups meeting up soon. Like the group organised by Mark Goudie (Pron: Gordy) who organises regular EV meet ups with other EV owners here in the UK, so hello to the Northwest England Owners group on Facebook, and all the information you share and conversation you have. Any other groups listening? Let me know I’ll give you a shout. Mark also opened up the Tezla / Tessla debate – I think I just say what comes naturally BUT apologies to those who insist of Tessla, if I ever say Tezla I’m sorry. From now on I promise to try harder at Tessla. STUDY PREDICTS INCREASE IN ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLES Starting with a study by Statista, reported by RideApart.com and then ono InsideEVs, which is like a russian nested doll of credit I'm giving there, they are forecasting global e-bike sales will reach approximately 40 million units sometime in 2023. That's a huge number, and it starts to make more sense when you realise 35million of the 40million will be in China. But even so, 5 million electric bikes is a big number for North America and Europe. They say: "Unsurprisingly, one of the strongest forces in the entire e-market equation is urban (and suburban) areas. An increasing amount of electric two-wheeler sales are coming from scoot-sharing services like BMW’s DriveNow program, or the San Francisco-based Scoot Network e-scooter sharing offering. Both of these services, in addition to buying large fleets of bikes, also serve as a sort of motorized, two-wheeled test-drive, introducing the non-riding public to life on two-wheels. The number of EV startups risen sharply for the last couple years as well, and signs point to that trend only intensifying." https://insideevs.com/study-predicts-huge-increase-in-electric-motorcycle-sales-by-2023/?utm_source=bambu&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=industry RIVIAN TO DEBUT 800-HP ELECTRIC TRUCK AT LA AUTOSHOW Detriot-based electric car startup Rivian Automotive is getting ready to take the stage later this year at the Los Angeles Autoshow and debut the company’s first electric truck. “according to Christian Prenzler for Teslarati. "Rivian is also creating an 800-HP version of the vehicle capable of more than 450 miles of range, making it an SUV having the longest all-electric range on the market" These will serve the popular American consumer truck segment which we don't have in the UK or Europe to such a large extent. It's easy to quote numbers on something not yet made, but they say 0-60 in 2.8 seconds. “It’s stiffer than a supercar,” said CEO RJ Scaringe in speaking with Engadget. “There are only a few cars in the world that are going to be as fast as ours, and we have a large five-passenger truck.” The price they say is in the $50K to $90K region which seems way too cheap for all that performance. Rivian have their factory, the old Mitsubishi plant in Illinois, which they bought in January 2017. https://www.teslarati.com/rivian-800-hp-electric-truck-la-autoshow/ ADVANCED E-BUSES HIT ROADS QUICKER THAN EVS The latest long-term forecast from Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) shows sales of electric vehicles (EVs), increasing from a record 1.1 million worldwide last year to 11 million in 2025, and then surging 30million by 2030 which cost-parity with combustion is achieved. China will lead this transition, with sales there accounting for almost 50% of the global EV market in 2025 and 39% in 2030. The advance of e-buses will be even more rapid than for electric cars, according to BNEF’s analysis. It shows electric buses in almost all charging configurations having a lower total cost of ownership than conventional municipal buses by 2019. There are already over 300,000 e-buses on the road in China. https://www.windpowerengineering.com/business-news-projects/advanced-e-buses-to-hit-the-roads-quicker-than-electric-vehicles/ CHINA CUTS CAR TARIFFS "China will cut tariffs on most imported cars to 15 percent from July 1, the finance ministry said on Tuesday following a thaw in trade tensions with the United States" says the UK's Daily Mail. Whilst Bloomberg say: "For Tesla, a tariff cut will provide a boon until they set up local production. Tesla has been working with Shanghai’s government since last year to explore assembling cars in China. China saying that it will allow foreign new-energy vehicle makers to fully own auto factories as early as this year removed a primary hurdle for Elon Musk." https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-05-22/china-is-said-to-cut-car-import-duty-in-boost-for-lexus-bmw http://www.dailymail.co.uk/wires/afp/article-5756777/China-says-cut-auto-import-tariffs-July-1.html MODEL 3 PERFORMANCE COULD END UP BEING EVEN QUICKER Staying with Tesla and it seems Ryan McCaffrey from Ride The Lightning Tesla Podcast has a direct line to Elon - which some superfans of both would probably compare to that old saying about The Pope having a direct line to God. I'm joking. Mostly. However Ryan said on Twitter: It’s probably not *this* simple with manufacturing, but wouldn’t the robot just reach into the red caliper pile on the assembly line for the cars tagged as Performance? In other words, it’s just a different part (in practice if not technically so), not a different process." So he's talking there about the red brake parts seen on other performance models. To which Elon replied: "not promising anything, but we *might* be able to increase Model 3 Performance power output a little" However I think many buyers will be happy to stump up $54,000 for a very quick dual motor Model 3, rather than $78,000 (without Autopilot) for a stupidly quick Model 3. There will be those who always want the fastest, but basic dual motor would do me more than fine. https://electrek.co/2018/05/22/tesla-model-3-performance-version-higher-power-output-teases-elon-musk/ DS3 DESTINED FOR PARIS MOTOR SHOW Maybe DS are feeling like they're being left out of the EV party because Rachel Burgess in Autocar point out: "DS will reveal the electric DS3 Crossback compact SUV, a rival to the Audi Q2, at the Paris motor show this October ahead of its launch in 2019. The EV variant of the new car, which will run alongside more traditional powertrains, will be available from launch and will offer a range of more than 124 miles on each charge. The urban-focused car is likely to have a 50kWh battery pack. DS product boss Eric Apode told Autocar that "DS has to lead [the electric] innovation" within the PSA Group. "This is also because of pricing. It [electric technology] has to start with premium brands because the prices will be high," he said. "Then, as the pricing decreases, it can go to the other brands." https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/electric-ds-3-crossback-be-revealed-2018-paris-motor-show MODEL 3 BRAKE ISSUES WILL BE SORTED SOON Finally on Tesla, Elon Musk has now admitted there was a braking issue with the Model 3. The braking issue was first pointed out by Consumer Reports. He said it can be fixed with a firmware update that the electric car maker will be rolling out in a few days. He said in a reply to Electrek: "Looks like this can be fixed with a firmware update. Will be rolling that out in a few days. With further refinement, we can improve braking distance beyond initial specs. Tesla won’t stop until Model 3 has better braking than any remotely comparable car." https://www.cnbc.com/2018/05/22/teslas-musk-admits-model-3-braking-issue-promises-fix.html BP INVESTS $20 MILLION IN FLASH BATTERIES CNBC report on more oil money flowing into electrons: "BP said its venture capital arm was investing in Tel Aviv-based StoreDot as it looks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in its operations. StoreDot develops so-called "flash batteries," lithium-ion batteries that it says can charge electric vehicles in a matter of minutes." "Ultra-fast charging is at the heart of BP's electrification strategy," Tufan Erginbilgic, chief executive of BP's downstream business, said in a statement on Tuesday. "StoreDot's technology shows real potential for car batteries that can charge in the same time it takes to fill a gas tank." The range on their batteries is said to be 300miles but the product won't even start to be commercialised until 2019. https://www.cnbc.com/2018/05/22/bp-invests-in-israeli-battery-startup-storedot.html NISSAN: VEHICLE TO GRID SERVICES WILL NOT DRAIN EV BATTERIES Finally Nissan Europe chief Gareth Dunsmore has responded to suggestions that V2G, which is being led in many ways by Nissan because of the CHAdeMO connector, and he says: "“It is not draining the battery, it is using the battery to balance the grid. It uses the battery, but it also puts energy into the battery; it is going up and down rather than draining. Draining the battery is not where the value is for the energy company or the customer.” Accoring to The Energyst: Mike Kerslake, UK technical manager for Chinese battery firm BYD, said V2G services for those customers may require a change of service model in terms of battery ownership and management. “Perhaps the vehicle owner doesn’t own the battery, but it is [instead] leased from an energy resources company, who also gets value from the vehicle to grid capability,” said Kerslake. “So there is quite a potential change in the way it works.” https://theenergyst.com/nissan-vehicle-grid-services-will-not-drain-ev-batteries/ I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested.
