TESLA HALTS WORK AT SHANGHAI FACTORY FOR TWO DAYS AMID CHINA COVID CURBS - Tesla (TSLA.O) is suspending production at its Shanghai factory for two days, according to a notice sent internally and to suppliers, as China tightens COVID restrictions to curb the country's latest outbreak. - The Shanghai factory runs around the clock, and suppliers and Tesla staff were told on Wednesday in the notice, reviewed by Reuters, that production would be suspended for Wednesday and Thursday. - Many cities across China, including Shanghai, have been rolling out strict movement controls to stem the country's largest COVID-19 outbreak in two years. The measures have also caused factory shutdowns in parts of the country, putting pressure on supply chains. Original Source : https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/exclusive-tesla-stops-work-shanghai-factory-two-days-amid-china-covid-curbs-2022-03-16/ - "We are actively cooperating with the government's requirements for nucleic acid testing and other epidemic prevention requirements, and at the same time are doing our best to ensure production, overcoming difficulties together," the company said in a statement sent to Reuters. Original Source : https://uk.news.yahoo.com/tesla-says-trying-keep-production-022841904.html TESLA HACKER INDICATES MODEL Y STANDARD RANGE+ VARIANT COULD ROLLOUT FROM GIGA TEXAS FIRST - A Tesla hacker has discovered language in Software Update 2022.8.2 that seems to indicate a Model Y Standard Range+ variant will be rolling out from Gigafactory Texas initially, as deliveries are set to begin soon. - Last week, it was confirmed that a new Model Y variant packing just 279 miles of range was added to the EPA's FuelEconomy.gov website, confirming the vehicle was approved by the agency to enter the stream of commerce. Teslarati confirmed this by recovering several documents from the EPA, which confirmed that Tesla had applied for certification of the new Model Y variant on February 2, receiving a Certificate of Conformity from the EPA on February 16 - the new Model Y's range rating had Tesla enthusiasts stumped at whether the vehicle would equip the 4680 cells that Tesla confirmed would be in Austin-made vehicles. The low range rating seemed to indicate that Tesla could be rolling out a Standard Range vehicle using LFP cells - While the range ratings and batteries used in the Model Y are not present in the internal reference, green said the model name, Standard Range+, and location of manufacture, Gigafactory Texas, are included. Often, these people are diehard fans, keen to promote the company's prowess and show off its new driver assist features. Sometimes, though, they overshare — posting videos that show exactly when and how Tesla's software gets it wrong. - John Bernal, a former Tesla employee who reviewed the company's FSD Beta software on his YouTube channel AI Addict says he was fired by the company last month after posting a video that showed his Tesla hitting a bollard. - Bernal says that prior to his dismissal he was told verbally by his managers that he “broke Tesla policy” and that his YouTube channel was a “conflict of interest” (though his written separation notice did not specify a reason for his dismissal). Bernal said he'd previously been approached by managers after posting a video in March 2021 that showed a number of close calls with pedestrians and cyclists while using the FSD beta software. - A number of FSD Beta testers post reviews of the company's software on YouTube, and Bernal says he intends to maintain his channel (though he now needs to borrow friends' cars to test FSD Beta). As Bernal told CNBC: “I still care about Tesla, vehicle safety and finding and fixing bugs.” Original Source : https://www.theverge.com/2022/3/16/22980580/tesla-fired-employee-john-bernal-ai-addict-youtube-full-self-driving-beta-reviews 2022 WORLD CAR OF THE YEAR'S THREE FINALISTS ARE ALL ELECTRIC CROSSOVERS - Crossovers of all shapes and sizes are in high demand right now and it seems the very best ones are electric. The three finalists for the World Car of the year competition have been announced and they're all sporty electric high riders - Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6. - The latter has already been crowned (European) Car of the Year for 2022, so its presence among the top three is not surprising. Hyundai Ioniq 5 is equally talented and geared more towards comfort, but its polarizing design is not as unanimously appreciated as the Kia's. - The winners in all six categories will be announced live at the 2022 New York Auto Show on April 13. Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/573967/wcoty-finalists-2022-all-electric-crossovers 43-MILE EV RANGE FOR ALL-NEW KIA SPORTAGE PLUG-IN HYBRID - Kia UK has revealed full details of the all-new Sportage Plug-in Hybrid - emissions-free driving range of up to 43 miles (WLTP), rising to 48 miles on the WLTP City Cycle – enough to cover most daily commutes and shopping needs. Out on the open road, electric energy consumption is an impressive 3.68 miles/kWh - 1.6-litre T-GDi engine that works in tandem with a 66.9kW permanent magnet traction electric motor and a 13.8kWh lithium-ion polymer battery pack. The high-voltage battery sits centrally between the two axles under the body of the SUV - t on-board charger (OBC) system is rated at 7.2kW, making it the fastest-charging Kia PHEV to-date. The battery can complete a full charge in just 1hr 45m. Original Source : https://electriccarsreport.com/2022/03/43-mile-ev-range-for-all-new-kia-sportage-plug-in-hybrid/ BMW AIMS TO SELL OVER 2 MILLION ELECTRIC VEHICLES BY THE END OF 2025 - BMW announced that it is ramping up its e-mobility targets, “confirmed by the success of its all-electric models to date”. Initially, this refers primarily to the growing range of electric vehicle models, but electric sales are expected to increase further “rapidly”. - As the Group announced in the context of its business figures for 2021, it will already have 15 fully electric models in production this year, covering around 90 per cent of the current segments. However, BMW also included pre-production vehicles in the figure. Presumably, vehicles such as the i4 eDrive 40 and i4 M50 will also count as two models. - The big technology shift is scheduled for 2025 with the ‘New Class' debut, but the New Class will play only a minor role in cumulative sales by the end of 2025. “With the BMW iX and BMW i4, we have launched what are probably the best e-cars of the present day – at least the test results and the high demand from our customers speak for themselves,” says BMW CEO Oliver Zipse. “And with the BMW i7, we're going one better this year.” - BMW is pinning high hopes on the New Class, on which models from the size of a 1 Series to the 7 Series are to be based in perspective as a “cluster architecture” – and “uncompromisingly” designed for electric drives. A “completely new electric drive” reduces consumption and increases range. BMW does not provide details on this; the current fifth-generation involves current-excited synchronous motors. - If the new, more optimistic scenario materializes, annual sales of fully electric vehicles by the BMW Group could exceed 1.5 million units as early as 2030. - Just a few days ago, BMW called for political support in expanding the hydrogen refuelling infrastructure. - Instead of a 700-bar refuelling station every 150 kilometres by 2027, BMW called for intervals to be reduced to 100 kilometres to support hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. BMW I7 M70 COULD BE THE BRAND'S FLAGSHIP ELECTRIC VEHICLE - In a few weeks, BMW will finally unveil the latest generation BMW 7 Series, and along with it, the first ever BMW i7 electric limousine. There is a lot riding on the success of the new 7 Series, and as you'd expect, it's quite an important car for BMW. - The luxury limousine has historically introduced new technology which eventually trickled down to other BMW models. So that trend is likely to continue with the G70 generation. - a BMW i7 M70 makes a lot more sense than the previously reported i7 M60. And to further differentiate itself from the BMW iX M60, the rumored i7 M70 will likely have more power and range. The 2023 BMW iX M60 offers 610 hp and 811 lb-ft of torque, along with an estimated 280-mile range. So we expect a BMW i7 M70 to offer at least 630-640 horsepower and a similar, if not better, electric range. Original Source : https://www.bmwblog.com/2022/02/23/bmw-i7-m70-electric-vehicle 2023 BMW I7 TEASED DURING ACOUSTIC TESTING AHEAD OF WORLD PREMIERE - A fully electric car gives automakers a bit more headaches in terms of noise insulation. With no combustion engine to cancel wind and tire noises, you begin to hear more unwanted sounds. That's obviously not acceptable for a fullsize premium sedan, which is why BMW is going the extra mile to make the cabin of its next-generation 7 Series a veritable luxury cocoon. - With the i7, BMW has acoustically optimized the electric drivetrain by developing a bespoke mount for the electric motors. These have a specific noise encapsulation to guarantee a silent operation, enhanced by installing a foam absorber in the tires. Body rigidity at the front is also up compared to previous 7 Series generations, while the flush door handles diminish wind noise. - the 2023 BMW i7 will have aero-optimized side mirror caps (why not cameras though?) and a nearly closed underbody. Original Source : https://www.motor1.com/news/569031/2023-bmw-i7-acoustic-testing 2022 BMW I7 M50 ELECTRIC LIMO TO OFFER ALMOST 400 MILES OF RANGE - BMW is gearing up to launch the BMW i7, which will become a new rival for the likes of the new Mercedes EQS and the stalwart Tesla Model S when it goes on sale at the end of 2022. - We expect the i7 to be offered with both the 71kWh and 105.2kWh battery packs from the BMW iX - Thanks to slipperier aerodynamics, the range-topping i7's lower power consumption should provide a range of nearly 400 miles, despite using the same dual motor system found in the iX xDrive50. - The i7 prototype in BMW's official shots is still heavily camouflaged, so there's nothing new to glean on the design front. The car's shape is more that of a traditional three-box saloon than the ultra-curvy, hatchback-style EQS. A long bonnet and high shoulder line combines with a low nose, while the rear follows the classic large saloon format. - The i7 will be based on BMW's modular CLAR platform and powered by its fifth-generation eDrive technology, which also appears in the new i4 saloon and iX. Using this EV drive system should dramatically reduce production times, because it groups the electric motor, transmission and electronics into a single unit. Original Source : https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/bmw/7-series/356730/2022-bmw-i7-m50-electric-limo-offer-almost-400-miles-range ELECTRIC CAR PRICES COULD BE ABOUT TO PLUMMET - Battery electric vehicle (EV) prices have already fallen dramatically and are expected to reach parity with petrol or diesel cars between 2025 and 2027 - and be cheaper very soon after. - The price drop is partly due to advancements in the batteries, set to tumble further still, as well as carmakers producing more mass market cars. - In 2019 many electric cars were bought up by commercial fleets - taxi or car hire companies or those with company cars - after the government offered tax breaks for EVs. - These companies tend to sell off those vehicles after two to three years, so those are about to enter the second-hand market. And Britain loves to buy second-hand cars. Last year around 7.5 million used cars changed hands, compared with two million new ones. It is understood that battery developments will allow it to pack the cells closer together. It will also work to improve storage efficiency in order to reduce charging times by around 30 per cent to less than 20 minutes. Envision is also set to double the number of battery cells in each car which increases range but also makes vehicles heavier. - Nikkei Asia reports that Envision will establish a new plant in Ibaraki Prefecture near Tokyo that will produce the new batteries. Net income this year is expected to be between $9.4 billion and $10.8 billion, also in line with its $10 billion profit in 2021, GM said. Barra said the company is not reinstating its dividend, which the automaker cut during the early days of the coronavirus pandemic in April 2020. She said the company plans to use the saved capital for accelerating, even increasing, its $35 billion in investments in electric and autonomous vehicles through 2025. “We are pulling ahead significant investment into the 2022-to-2025 time frame, and we will share more details as we further refine our plan,” Barra told analysts during a call Tuesday. the company will announce a third plant to produce battery-electric trucks in the foreseeable future as well as the location of a fourth production facility for battery cells with LG https://www.cnbc.com/2022/02/01/general-motors-gm-earnings-q4-2021.html 2021 FULL-YEAR AND Q4 LETTER TO SHAREHOLDERS Since 2020, we have announced investments totaling more than $14 billion in 10 sites across North America to increase our manufacturing capacity in the region to more than 1 million EVs annually by the end of 2025. In late 2021, we opened Factory ZERO in Detroit and Hamtramck, our first plant dedicated to Ultium products, including the GMC HUMMER EV We are converting a plant in Orion Township, Michigan, to EV truck production to help provide us with a total of 600,000 units of EV truck capacity in North America by the end of 2025. Ultium Cells, our joint venture with LG Energy Solution, announced its third U.S. cell plant More than 110,000 Silverado EVs are reserved so far, including reservations from more than 240 fleet operators, and the numbers keep growing. FedEx Express, Merchants Fleet and Walmart, are adopting BrightDrop's electric vehicles and technology to make their delivery operations more efficient. All told, we have more than 25,000 production reservations for BrightDrop cargo vans. Customer interest in the LYRIQ is now so strong that we will forgo a new round of reservations and begin taking customer orders soon after the Debut Edition launches in March. Equinox EV is compellingly new, and it's affordable, with an estimated starting MSRP of $30,000. The efficiencies created by the Ultium Platform are a key reason why we can deliver truly affordable EVs like the Equinox. https://media.gm.com/media/us/en/gm/home.detail.html/content/Pages/news/emergency_news/2022/shareholders/q4-21-ceo-letter-to-shareholders.html FORD WILL SPEND UP TO $20 BILLION MORE IN SHIFT TO ELECTRIC VEHICLES Ford will spend as much as $20 billion to reorganize its business for the electric future, according to Bloomberg. The automaker is also mulling whether to spin off some of its EV business as a special acquisition company (SPAC) in order to attract more investment. Ford has previously stated that it would spend $30 billion on electric and autonomous vehicle development by 2025. Ford is reportedly putting former Apple and Tesla executive Doug Field in charge of the reorganization, which will include converting its factories from gas-powered to electric vehicle production and hiring more engineers. Ford recently announced that it was doubling production of its upcoming electric pickup truck, the F-150 Lightning, and tripling production for the Mustang Mach-E, with the expectation that it will reach over 200,000 units per year by 2023. Ford's electric delivery van, the E-Transit, also goes on sale early this year. He had a previous stint at Apple, where he was once the VP of Mac hardware engineering, but he left the company in 2013 to become Tesla's chief vehicle engineer, where he helped oversee the troublesome development of the Model 3 sedan. https://www.theverge.com/2022/2/1/22912841/ford-electric-vehicle-reorganization-investment U.S. EV CHARGING NETWORK IS MORE ROBUST BUT PROVIDER DIFFERENCES REMAIN significant differences in reliability and performance remain between providers, an industry ranking by engineering consulting firm umlaut found. The group tested chargers by Volkswagen's (VOWG_p.DE) Electrify America, ChargePoint (CHPT.N), EVgo (EVGO.O), Blink Charging (BLNK.O), EVconnect, Greenlots and Tesla's (TSLA.O) Superchargers across seven U.S. states in September. Electrify America reached the highest score in the ranking, followed by Tesla's Supercharger and ChargePoint, said umlaut, which was acquired by Accenture (ACN.N) in October. The ranking considered the technical performance of chargers, as well as the charging station environment, such as lighting, roofing and nearby amenities. It also took into account the performance of charging networks' apps The group used a Tesla Model 3 and a Ford (F.N) Mach-E for its 2021 tests Last year, EVs accounted for around 2% of all new car sales https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/us-ev-charging-network-is-more-robust-provider-differences-remain-2022-01-31/ MAGNA EDRIVES HIT THE MARKET ON VOLKSWAGEN MEB PLATFORM The HASCO Magna Electric Drive Systems Co., Ltd. VOLKSWAGEN RAMPS UP E-MOBILITY SPENDING TO $59 BLN BY 2026 - Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) on Thursday said it would ramp up spending for battery-powered electric vehicles by around 50% to 52 billion euros ($59 billion) by 2026 as part of the group's far-reaching transformation. - The investment is part of Volkswagen's new revolving 5-year spending plan, which foresees total investments of 159 billion euros in the 2022-2026 period, compared with 150 billion for the 2021-2025 period. The site will produce some 250,000 vehicles as part of the Trinity project. - VW brand chief Ralf Brandstaetter will take over the group's China business from Diess on Aug. 1. - Diess will add responsibility for the company's software unit Cariad Original Source : https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/diess-keeps-job-vw-increases-ev-spending-catch-tesla SKODA CEO THOMAS SCHÄFER TO BECOME VOLKSWAGEN BOSS - Current Skoda boss Thomas Schäfer will switch over to head up Volkswagen next year as part of a major reshuffle of the Volkswagen Group management team. - Schäfer only took over as Skoda chairman in August last year, having previously served as the head of the VW Group's South African operation. He will take up his new role as Volkswagen's chief operating officer from 1 April next year. - While the moves announced by the supervisory board are significant, they are not as extensive as had been rumoured, including reports that Diess could be shifted from his post as chairman of the board. CALIFORNIA: ELECTRIC CAMPERVAN, ANYONE? - Volkswagen anticipated today the name of another car based on the electric van: ID. California. - Volkswagen said that Hanover would make the ID. California - American websites are already betting on an electric campervan, the shape in which the original VW Bus made its fame in the U.S. in the 1960s and, more specifically, in California. It will not be as roomy as modern campervans, but the possible 4.94 meters (194.5 inches) of length will make it one of the biggest MEB products around. - Apart from being produced in Hanover, the ID. California and the ID. BUZZ AD (whatever AD means) will also be made in Chattanooga starting in 2022. Volkswagen's primary market for the electric van and its derivatives will be the U.S. Original Source : https://www.autoevolution.com/news/volkswagen-will-have-an-id-california-electric-campervan-anyone-176166.html NEW BMW I3 SEDAN MAKES EARLY DEBUT IN CHINA AS ELECTRIC 3 SERIES - China is home to the world's largest automotive market, and as such, automakers are keen to have a plethora of new vehicles in the region available for buyers. Entering that market sometimes leads to unexpected new-vehicle reveals through China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and that seems to be the case here with the new BMW i3 sedan. - This looks like a tweaked BMW 3 Series and is nothing like the small i3 hatchback we currently know. Nevertheless, photos clearly show an i3 badge on the rear, along with eDrive 35L branding. What does all of this mean? - China's MIIT website also lists some statistics including a power output of 250 kilowatts. That translates to 335 horsepower, and this car is also the long-wheelbase version so that likely explains the 35L nomenclature. As for eDrive, that almost certainly denotes this particular model as rear-wheel-drive only instead of all-wheel drive. CHINA TO ALLOCATE 38.5 BILLION YUAN WORTH OF NEV SUBSIDIES IN 2022 - China plans to appropriate around 38.5 billion yuan ($6.033 billion) next year to subsidize the projects for saving energy and cutting carbon emissions, according to a notice recently issued by China's Ministry of Finance. - China hopes new energy vehicle (NEV) sales can reach around 20% of all car sales in 2025, China's State Council said in Nov. 2020 in a plan for development of the NEV sector. For the first ten months of 2021, NEV sales in China amounted to 2.542 million units, accounting for 12.12% of the country's total new car sales Original Source : https://autonews.gasgoo.com/m/70019227.html AROUND 1,000 SPANISH PETROL STATIONS INSTALL ELECTRIC CAR CHARGING POINTS - Around 1,000 Spanish petrol stations must install electric car charging points - The Government of Spain continues to move forward with its strategy for the growth of the electric car in Spain. A proposal has reportedly just been released to public information by the Ministry for the Environment (Miteco). - It included a ministerial order that establishes a list of fuel supply facilities, along with fuels required to install electric recharging infrastructures, as well as the exceptions and technical impossibilities for its fulfillment. - more than 1,000 petrol stations across Spain, with sales of more than five million litres per year, or relevant weight, must install at least one charging point for electric vehicles. - Within a period of 21 months from the entry into force of the aforementioned Law, that is, February 2023, service stations with sales of more than 10 million litres of petrol and diesel in 2019 must install at least one 150 kW recharging point. Within the next two years, the plan is to install what will essentially be giant battery units that will connect to the motorway services operators' charge points. - Malcolm Wilkinson, Head of Energy for National Highways, said: “Whilst we have limited control over the number of petrol and diesel cars on the network, by supporting the expansion of the rapid charge points network, we hope to increase EV drivers' confidence for all types of journeys, both long and short.” Original Source : https://www.electrive.com/2021/11/29/the-uks-national-highways-to-try-battery-storage/ BMW I4 CUSTOMER DELIVERIES BEGIN IN GERMANY THREE MONTHS EARLY - Customer deliveries of the first i4 EVs began at the BMW Welt in Munich last weekend, three months earlier than the automaker originally planned. Bernhard Kuhnt, senior vice president BMW Group Market Germany, said that demand for the i4 is very high. - On the occasion, BMW i4 owners were invited to an accompanying program around the fully-electric Gran Coupe in Munich. - The BMW i4 is available in two variants at launch, the single motor i4 eDrive40 and dual motor i4 M50. Both feature an 83.9 kWh lithium ion battery pack (80.7 kwh net capacity) enabling an estimated range of 300 miles (482 km) for the former and 245 miles (394 km) for the latter (both for the US market). - “With the BMW i4, we have absolutely struck a chord. You can see this from the very high demand for this car. We are delighted to be expanding our electrified product line-up with this sporty, fully-electric Gran Coupé at exactly the right time and to present the first vehicles to our customers today – three months earlier than originally planned. The first delivery of a BMW i4 today, and the first BMW iX in about a week, are further milestones for the BMW Group on the road to electromobility.” Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/551178/bmw-i4-first-customer-deliveries/ BMW EDRIVE ZONES NOW AVAILABLE IN 138 EUROPEAN CITIES - The BMW Group is introducing its innovative eDrive Zones in another 20 European cities, including Copenhagen, Verona and Toulouse. This means that a total of 138 cities in Europe are now benefiting from this trailblazing technology. The service is expected to be rolled out in at least another 30 cities worldwide in the coming year. - In an eDrive Zone, BMW plug-in hybrid vehicles automatically switch to all-electric driving mode upon entering inner city areas. Then, the plug-in hybrid models drive locally emission-free – just like purely electric vehicles – and with low fuel costs, as electric motors are much more efficient than combustion engines for driving in city traffic. The vehicle recognises the designated areas using geofencing technology and GPS. The automated eDrive feature is available as standard in many existing and all future BMW plug-in hybrids. Drivers are rewarded with bonus points for each all-electric kilometre driven – and with double points in an eDrive Zone – which they can redeem for charging credit. In turn, drivers also collect bonus points while charging their vehicle. - The 20 latest cities to be added are: Aberdeen, Bregenz, Brescia, Bristol, Cambridge, Cardiff, Copenhagen, Cork, Coventry, Florence, Klagenfurt, Lille, Matosinhos, Naples, Oeiras, Oxford, Sheffield, St. Pölten, Toulouse and Verona. Dubbed Hyundai Home, the service will provide one-stop shopping for these products to Hyundai customers, the automaker said in a press release. It's scheduled to launch in certain markets in 2022. - A service integrating home charging, solar, and energy storage could be a great complement to the Hyundai Ioniq 5 crossover. Charging an electric car from a home solar installation reduces that car's overall carbon footprint and the owner's dependence on the grid. The Ioniq 5 is also equipped for bidirectional charging, potentially allowing it to discharge some power into energy storage battery packs when needed. - The launch of Hyundai Home also builds on the automaker's previous hints that the Ioniq sub-brand will span beyond cars. The Ioniq 5 itself will also be available through an innovative lease that will let intenders try before they buy. Hyundai has said research indicates likely EV buyers are big users of subscription services, so a different leasing model was worth trying. According to Electrek, a spokesperson for the Germany Economy Ministry confirmed the news in a statement. - After the news came out, CEO Musk made a comment that suggested Tesla withdrew the applications because it does not want any subsidies. Meanwhile, the Financial Times went into the details of the programme and found a clause that might be the cause of withdrawal. Companies are not eligible for the funds if they have already deployed the same battery production at another plant, the report citing FT, said. - The publication suggested that ongoing delays in achieving approval to start production at Gigafactory Berlin could make Tesla ineligible for the funds since it is also deploying battery production at Gigafactory Texas and Shanghai. BLACKROCK COULD PUMP HALF A BILLION EUROS INTO HIGH POWER CHARGING "The US investment firm BlackRock is to lead a capital increase of 750 million euros by the Ionity joint venture, which intends to use the money to expand further its high power charging network, German media reports. There is also an indication of the next expansion stage." says electrive: "Manager Magazin refers to people involved saying BlackRock itself would invest 500 million euros as part of the capital increase. According to the report, the remaining 250 million euros would come from Ionity's existing owners, i.e. Audi and Porsche from the VW Group, Daimler, BMW, Ford and Hyundai-Kia. The capital increase would value Ionity at 2.25 billion euros. The US investor would thus have a 22 per cent stake in the charging joint venture. However, Ionity has not confirmed the capital increase or BlackRock's investment. The fact that Ionity is looking for external investors has been apparent since last winter. As the carmakers involved wanted to accelerate the expensive HPC expansion, they aimed to attract private equity capital. With an investment of 1.1 billion RMB (US$172 million), the company is further strengthening its R&D footprint and technological capabilities in the world's biggest car market. The fully-fledged R&D center focuses on major technological trends, tailor-made innovation and significantly accelerating Daimler's local product development." according to Green Car Congress: "The eDrive lab is equipped with two test chambers that can simulate a temperature range of -30 ˚C to +50 ˚C. The two sets of 4-wheel dynamometers can test whole electric vehicles, components or real battery pack tests. By adjusting the roller force and using big data applications, the intelligent test bench can simulate real driving conditions such as air resistance or different topographies. This allows comprehensive testing of next-generation electric vehicles at an early stage, under extreme conditions and throughout the year. The new eDrive lab also sets benchmarks in terms of sustainability and energy conservation: It is able to recuperate the energy of the tested vehicle back into the electric grid, which reduces the overall energy consumption significantly." The launch will happen by mid-decade, when it will be joined by a battery-powered C-Class sedan, the automaker told dealers this month according to Automotive News." says InsideEVs: "Initially, the current iteration of the EQC was supposed to spearhead the launch of the Mercedes EQ sub-brand in the US in early 2020. However, after delaying the launch by a year, the automaker canceled plans to bring the EQC stateside. Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz has launched the EQS electric flagship in the US, but dealers are waiting for a GLC-sized electric crossover because that's where the big money is. The gas-powered Mercedes-Benz GLC was the brand's second best-selling model in the US in the first nine months of the year. Mercedes US dealers' wishes will be granted, albeit in 2025, when the second-generation EQC will arrive as part of a fleet of electric vehicles Mercedes is launching in the US as it shifts toward an all-electric lineup. But this could be slashed in half by setting an ambitious target to convert every car in the country to electric by 2035." reports The Guardian: "The modelling was released by the Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF), which commissioned accounting firm Deloitte to examine the community benefit from increasing the uptake of electric vehicles (EVs). Petrol cars contribute heavily to air, noise and water pollution through the particles emitted from the exhaust and through the waste grease, oil and rubber needed to run them. By contrast, electric vehicles have fewer components and more efficient motors. As this pollution leads to illness, the cost ends up being borne by the health system." China maintains its dominance in terms of the operating and production capacity of EV batteries." says the South China MOrning Post in teh second of a series on battery tech: "CATL is developing a new sodium-ion battery which uses cheaper raw materials. The company claims to offer EV makers an alternative to existing technologies that use cobalt as the main ingredient. The new technology enables the prototype battery pack to have an energy storage capacity of 160Wh per kg, and the next-generation product's density is expected to exceed 200Wh per kg, according to Robin Zeng Yuqun, founder and chairman of CATL. He admitted that the new technology would have lower energy density. But he said it has several advantages over LFP, which include low-temperature performance and high charging speed." https://www.scmp.com/business/companies/article/3153333/chinas-ev-battery-manufacturers-race-develop-new-technologies NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM When buying a used electric car, how do you feel about servicing? BMW IX FIRST DRIVE REVIEW "The 2022 iX is one of two new BMW EVs coming to the US next year. But while the upcoming i4 is pretty much just a 4 Series Gran Coupe with an electric powertrain, the iX is a clean-sheet design from the ground up. It's unlike anything else in BMW's current portfolio." says Roadshow: "It all starts with a composite spaceframe made of carbon-fiber reinforced plastics, aluminum and high-strength steel. Sound familiar? This is the same framework BMW used when building the i3 hatchback and i8 coupe, and just like those cars, the iX's body structure is as light as it is strong. It's hard to get a sense of how big the iX is, especially in photos. At 195.0 inches long, 77.4 inches wide and 66.7 inches tall, the iX is about the size of a BMW X5 SUV, just a little shorter in height. In the US, the iX will come standard with 20-inch wheels, and a range of 21- and 22-inch options will be available." Firstly, it's lighter than converting a traditional architecture over for an electric vehicle. The structural points and package requirements are designed specifically for a battery pack in the floor, electric motors at each axle, and the lack of traditional powertrain equipment. So there's no waste in the chassis." points out BMW Blog: "For instance, the completely flat rear trunk floor in the iX is only possible because it doesn't have a traditional transmission tunnel to work around. The battery can be stored completely flat underneath the floor with no obstructions. Therefore, the battery is packaged better and rear passengers have far more foot room. Also, because the rear subframes and suspension were designed for an electric motor, the entire eDrive unit can be stored under the rear trunk floor with no intrusion into cargo space." BMW sources the prismatic cells from CATL and Samsung SDI, but the rest is done in-house in a new battery facility at its Dingolfing factory. The iX xDrive50 uses a 106.3 kWh pack (useable; gross capacity is 111.5 kWh) comprising six modules of 50 cells each and another five modules each with 40 cells." according to Ars Technica: "Since leaving the factory 1,235 miles (1,987 km) ago, the iX I was testing averaged 2.8 miles/kWh (22.1 kWh/100 km), which includes time running flat-out on derestricted German Autobahns at 124 mph (200 km/h). the iX can DC fast-charge at up to 195 kW, taking 40 minutes or less to charge from 10 percent to 80 percent. AC charging maxes out at 11 kW on single-phase electricity" Read more: https://arstechnica.com/cars/2021/09/forget-the-looks-love-the-tech-the-83200-bmw-ix-electric-suv " It makes 516 horsepower, does 0 to 62 mph in 4.6 seconds, and offers a range of about 300 miles (not official just yet in the U.S., but that's the estimate, and fits with what I saw in use). That front hood, by the way, is weird. Normally, all you can open in the front is the BMW badge, which gives access to the washer fluid reservoir and a bit of cargo room, provided your cargo is one solitary meatball wrapped in a napkin. The hood itself can be opened, but it's a bit of a chore involving two separate latches, and there are no stays or even one of those hinged sticks to hold the hood open; this is clearly a no user-serviceable parts inside kind of deal." writes Jason at Jalopnik: "On the autobahn, at speeds of 130 to 140 mph, the iX is a speedy, silent mobile room. The wheels have been designed to be especially aerodynamic and quiet, and as a result there's pretty minimal road noise. To keep things from being too masoleum-quiet, there's artificial sounds that get played, and they're actually and maybe a little surprisingly good. BMW got musician Hans Zimmer to come up with a bunch of EV sounds, and I found that they provided valuable feedback about throttle position and enhanced the overall experience without seeming forced or too artificial. It's well-executed." Show #1102. If you get any value from this podcast please consider supporting my work on Patreon. Plus all Patreon supporters get their own unique ad-free podcast feed. Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 3rd June. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Today we have two new all electric BMW's to tell you about. BMW’s iX - 300 miles for $83,200"The German automaker has just announced that when it goes on sale early next year, the new EV’s suggested price tag will exceed $80,000. That puts the iX squarely in Tesla Model X territory and leaves open the possibility that it may dethrone Elon Musk’s falcon-winged EV as the luxury SUV of choice for consumers. It will also compete with the Audi E-tron, Jaguar I-Pace, and Mercedes EQC when it eventually hits dealerships in the first quarter of 2022." says The Verge: "According to BMW, the iX will start at $83,200 for the iX xDrive 50 when preorders for the SUV begin in the middle of the year. That sum will get you an electric all-wheel drive motor configuration capable of putting out 516 horsepower for a 0–62mph sprint in 4.6 seconds. BMW says the iX will have an estimated range of around 300 miles based on the EPA’s testing model. BMW is planning a more powerful iX M60 model for the future, with over 600 horsepower and the first all-electric SUV from BMW M. The BMW iX xDrive50’s fifth-generation eDrive platform uses a 400-volt battery pack with a gross energy content of 111.5kWh and a net energy content of 106.3kWh." "The iX is capable of charging at up to 200 kW via a DC fast charger, and BMW says it should be able to gain up to 90 miles of range in 10 minutes at top charging speed. Filling the battery from 10 to 80 percent should take fewer than 40 minutes on the same fast charger." according to Inverse: "BMW is also partnering with the EVgo charging network to see charger and account status in within the BMW mobile app and iX buyers will get $100 in EVgo charging credit." " The iX xDrive 40 with 240 kW output will be available in Germany at prices starting at 77,300 euros, the iX xDrive 50 with 385 kW starts at 98,000 euros. In the USA, prices start at $83,200 plus $995 Destination, while the UK prices start at £69,905 OTR. The US market launch will also take place in 2022, unlike the UK’s November launch." writes electrive.com: " The high-voltage storage system in the 40 has a net capacity of 71 kWh and a gross capacity of 76.6 kWh. What is interesting about the batteries, is that BMW not only states the maximum charging power (200 kW for the large battery and 150 kW for the small battery) but also publishes detailed charging curves." Larger battery average of 126kW from 10-80%, or 35 mins, and smaller battery average of 96kW 10-80% or 31mins. Max regen is 208kW and 164kW respectively. 5th generation power train technology. Top speed limited to 200km/h. Towing is 2,500kg, 250 more than a Model X. https://www.theverge.com/2021/6/1/22462746/bmw-ix-suv-ev-price-specs https://www.inverse.com/innovation/bmw-ix-2022-electric-ev-suv-photos-video https://www.electrive.com/2021/06/02/bmw-ix-to-be-delivered-from-november/ BMW iX vs. Cadillac Lyriq, E-Tron, Mach-E and Model Y"All five vehicles utilize lithium-ion batteries in their floors, but everything beyond that is different. BMW's iX claims 300 miles of range from its 106.3 kWh (that's usable capacity, mind you) battery pack. At 100 kW, the Lyriq's battery capacity is large, though not the largest, but that curb weight comes home to roost in the Cadillac's estimated mileage, which GM figures is also roundabout 300 miles. Tesla, on the other hands, does more with less, its 75-kWh battery pack enabling a range of 326 miles in the Long Range variant -- being 1,200 pounds lighter has its benefits." writes CNET.com: "BMW's iX leaves all these other electric SUVs in the dust with a combined power output from its dual motors of 516 horsepower and 568 pound-feet of torque." https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/audi-function-on-demand-mmi-navigation-plus-subscription/ BMW i4 Summing up the importance of this car, engadget says: "As BMW's electrified 4 Series model, the i4 will be a linchpin for the company's electric future, running on the same eDrive EV platform as the iX. " "BMW i4 is the fully-electric version of the 4 Series Gran Coupe, but it has rather good specs for an electric car built on repurposed ICE vehicle underpinnings. In the United States, the i4 electric hatchback will be sold in two distinct trims, as a lower-powered rear-wheel drive variant, and a more powerful all-wheel drive model." says InsideEVs: "the i4 eDrive 40, which gets a single 335 horsepower rear-mounted electrically excited synchronous motor whose peak torque is 317 pound-feet (430 Nm). It sprints to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.7 seconds and its top speed is 118 mph (190 km/h). This will be the longest-range i4, with an expected EPA range of around 300 miles on a single charge, and a starting price of $55,400. The more powerful i4 M50 will be the performance driver’s choice, with all-wheel drive and a combined power output of 536 horsepower. BMW claims it sprints to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.9 seconds and its top speed is higher than the eDrive 40’s, 140 mph (225 km/h). The EPA range that BMW is expecting this model to achieve is a more conservative 240 miles and its starting price is $65,900" On the heat pump BMW said: "At extremely low ambient temperatures, the heat pump is assisted by a pair of powerful continuous-flow heaters offering 9 kW of heating power each. This ensures that thermal comfort on a par with conventionally powered BMW models can be provided very efficiently in any situation. The latest version of the heat pump makes use of ambient heat and heat from dehumidification – as well as the waste heat from the motors – for energy-efficient operation." "Instead of BMW’s current driver’s display and iDrive screen setup, BMW has now combined both into on giant panel, with two separate digital screens built in. The driver’s display looks similar to the gauges you’ll see in any other current Bimmer but it features more futuristic graphics, a bit more customization, and a cleaner design. While the new iDrive system is a complete overhaul, featuring an entirely new UI, added functionality, fantastic looking graphics, and a revised menu system." according to BMWblog: "BMW added Apple and Google Maps to the head-up display. The hatchback is a feature that all 4 Series Gran Coupe customers love and one of the main reasons they choose it over the 3 Series. Both cars get an 81.5 kWh net-energy battery pack (f 83.9 kWh gross) that’s as sustainable as absolutely possible. The high-voltage battery in the i4 is comprised of four modules with 72 cells each and three 12-cell modules. The i4 can charge at up to 200 kW, with a compatible DC fast charger. At that speed, the BMW i4 40 can recharge 102 miles of range in just ten minutes"Also: dynamic air suspension, 18-20" wheels, acoustic glazing, Harmon Kardon sound with 16 speakers, autonomous LKA up to 125mph.https://insideevs.com/news/511281/bmw-i4-us-priced-detailed/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-articleshttps://www.engadget.com/bmw-i4-q1-2022-with-up-to-300-miles-range-101537012.htmlBMW i4 Prototype Drive"Mid-size saloons are where BMW’s customer base has resided traditionally, so the fully-electric i4 has the chance to attract a significant proportion of the marque’s buyers to zero-emission motoring. In the M50 variant, one thing is immediately clear: this is an EV made for keen drivers. The i4 appeals with astonishing steering precision and smooth handling, and despite the two-tonne weight there’s relatively little body roll. The ultra-low centre of gravity comes into play here; it’s actually 53mm lower than in the 3 Series." says AutoExpress: "The entire underside of the car is faired in for maximum aerodynamic efficiency, and since there’s no exhaust to deal with, the large diffuser makes use of all of the rear bumper space it can."electrive notes UK pricing: "BMW also named the prices for the two variants of the i4. The i4 eDrive 40 will be listed at prices starting at £51,905 OTR. As the vehicle costs more than the £35,000 maximum eligibility for the plug-in car grant, this means i4 drivers in the UK will have to do without the government grant. The i4 M50 will start at £63,905, while the market launch for both versions of the i4 will begin in November 2021." In the U.S. it starting at $56,395 (including destination charges) for the rear-wheel-drive eDrive40 models and $66,895 for the more powerful AWD M50.Also, U.S. federal tax credit.https://www.electrive.com/2021/06/02/bmw-i4-to-launch-with-two-variants/BMW i4 vs Tesla Model 3"The i4’s dimensions, as we noted previously, are remarkably close to the Model 3 in every direction. It is 188.3 inches long, 72.9 inches wide, and 57.0 inches high with a wheelbase of 112.8 inches. The Model 3 is shorter at 184.8 inches, but its width (72.8 inches), height (56.8 inches), and wheelbase (113.2 inches) are all within half an inch of the new BMW. The i4 looks noticeably longer than the Model 3, in part due to its sleeker styling versus the Model 3’s bubble-shaped greenhouse even if the two are very close in height. " reports Brian Wong from Green Car Reports: "I only had a chance to play with the setup for a few minutes, but it felt ready for primetime. Responses were instantaneous, the menu structure is intuitive, and it’s fair to assume it will carry over some of iDrive 7’s most useful features, like wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay and a voice command assistant that is actually helpful. Whether or not you prefer this more traditional look and feel compared to the Model 3’s single screen, highly minimalistic approach is a matter of personal preference. " 0-60mph, MOdel 3 Perf is 3.1 vs 3.9 sec here. https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1132451_2022-bmw-i4-up-close-how-does-it-size-up-vs-model-3BMW i4 vs. Kia EV6, Polestar 2 and Tesla Model 3CNET has also done one of their comparisons here too: "Every i4 will use an 83.9-kilowatt-hour battery. Official range figures aren't yet available, but BMW estimates the i4 M50 will have an EPA rating of 245 miles (the single-motor i4 eDrive40 should do a bit better, around 300 miles). Kia doesn't have EV6 GT range estimates right now, and the M50 is expected to last a little longer than the 232-mile Polestar 2. The Tesla Model 3 Performance, meanwhile, is EPA-rated at 315 miles. Real quick, a note about charging. The Kia EV6 has a major advantage by way of its 800-volt architecture. Kia says the EV6 can take in about 70 miles' worth of range in about 5 minutes, which is seriously impressive. BMW, meanwhile, maxes out at 90 miles' worth of range in about 30 minutes."https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/2022-bmw-i4-kia-ev6-polestar-2-tesla-model-3-spec-comparison/QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COMWhat kind of charging do you think workplaces should have?Email me your thoughts and I’ll read them out on Sunday – hello@evnewsdaily.com It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast. On today’s podcast: BMW i4 is a Proper Sports Saloon. BMW iX to launch in Germany for €77,300 BMW Strategy MINI Brand Will Be All Electric S. Arrival Of The ID.4 EV MG5 Estate for Europe Show #1025 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 18th March. BMW I4 IS A PROPER SPORTS SALOON. It's not a crossover! It's not an SUV! Hurray! It's competition for the Tesla Model 3 and the Polestar 2. “The i4 uses the firm’s fifth-generation eDrive electric motors and will be powered by an 80kWh battery pack, mounted low in the car’s chassis. BMW says the system (battery and motors together) has been designed to be lightweight, tipping the scales at 550kg, allowing the i4 to sprint from 0-62mph in around four seconds and reach a top speed of “more than 124mph.” says AutoExpress: “The i4’s electric platform also features BMW’s latest charging tech, which, like the Audi e-tron, can support rapid charging at up to 150kW.“ Autoblog compares it to the concept version: "Yes, the colossal grille remains. It's controversial, but BMW told Autoblog it's standing by it. The long hood and the fastback-like roof line haven't changed. BMW chose not to release full technical specifications about the i4, noting only that the lineup will include several versions. The efficiency champ will be able to cover up to 300 miles on a charge, according to early estimates, while the quickest model will reach 60 mph from a stop in about four seconds thanks to a 530-horsepower drivetrain" "Given the car’s layout, and the team who developed and is making it, we might reasonably assume this will be the best-driving electric car this side of a Porsche Taycan." wonders Top Gear rather optimistically: "[CEO Oliver] Zipse says it was “an easy decision” to bring out the i4 three months ahead of schedule. It goes on sale in Germany this autumn. Given how much it shares with the 4 Series, it’s also built on the same production line at the company’s historic Munich factory. That plant has particular significance as it’s right at the foot of the company’s headquarters tower. The heart of BMW, then." Pistonheads.com seemed to have a more accurate range figure: "BMW has revealed a pre-production i4 and confirmed that the all-electric four-door will have up to 530hp and a range of up to 366 miles, according to WLTP. The i4 Gran Coupe will be launched later this year in both normal and M Performance variants, with the 530hp output almost certainly attributed to the latter." The kidney grille is obviously blanked off, but it houses all the sensor suite. Both the RWD and AWD versions should handle well. https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/bmw/i4 https://www.autoblog.com/2021/03/17/bmw-i4-ev-revealed/ https://www.topgear.com/car-news/electric/heres-your-first-look-production-bmw-i4 https://www.pistonheads.com/news/ph-ev/crucial-new-bmw-i4-revealed-in-final-format/43893 BMW IX TO LAUNCH IN GERMANY FOR €77,300 The BMW iX goes into full production at their Dingolfing plant in Germany later in 2021. "BMW iX is the Bavarian automaker’s attempt to carve out as big a piece of the growing electric luxury SUV pie as it can. The iX is a ground-up model designed as a battery electric vehicle that features lots of new tech, including an all-new iDrive infotainment system, as well as the latest generation of BMW’s eDrive electric powertrain." says Motor1: " The manufacturer also confirmed that it will start accepting pre-orders in the US as of June 2021, and that the model’s US launch and start of deliveries is expected to take place early in 2022 with a starting price somewhere in the mid-$80,000 range." "BMW has announced the German prices and technical specifications of the two versions of its iX electric SUV. The iX xDrive40 and iX xDrive50 variants will be launching in Germany by the end of 2021 with prices starting at 77,300 euros." reports Chris Randall at electrive: "The ‘xDrive’ designation, familiar from BMW combustion models, reveals that the basic version of the iX also features an all-wheel-drive system. The ’40’ is supposed to place the variant on a similar level to the combustion engine models since the models with the three-litre in-line six-cylinder are currently mainly sold with the ’40’ designation. the iX xDrive40 should accelerate from a standstill to 100 kph in less than six seconds. Consumption is said to be 200Wh/km (322wh/mile). With the smaller battery, the DC charging power is up to 150 kW, which means that 90 kilometres of electricity can be recharged in ten minutes. The charging process from 10 to 80 per cent should take less than 40 minutes. The battery is said to have a gross energy content of “more than 100 kWh”. BMW gives the estimated standard range as more than 600 kilometres. Charging with the large battery takes place at a maximum of 200 kW, which means it should be possible to charge enough power for 120 kilometres in ten minutes." UK pricing is £69,000 for the xDrive40, matching a BMW X5 specs and price. That's for 250 miles of range, the xDrvie50 getting 370 miles. They're using a structural battery pack , the 5th generation of BMW battery technology has 20% better energy density than anything they've used so far. Like the new VW's it will change it's regen based on sat nav and sensors. So on the motorway it will coast, in traffic it's max regen. I'd like to try that and see how quickly I get used to it. The motors are designed in house by BMW, they say different to what else is being used in the market. No rare earth materials. Much like Lucid tout, BMW are proud of how they've packaged the motor, electronics and gearbox in one housing. 11kw on board charger. I-Pace, e-tron, Model X, Mercedes EQS competition. https://www.electrive.com/2021/03/17/bmw-ix-to-launch-in-germany-for-e77300/ BMW STRATEGY "he firm's lineup will include electric variants of the 5 Series, the 7 Series, and the X1, though they will likely be based on the next-generation cars, not on the models currently found in showrooms. BMW hopes to have at least one electric model representing it in about 90% of its current market segments by 2023, and it realistically expects that EVs will account for approximately 50% of its global sales by 2030." says Autoblog: "Most will be powered exclusively by batteries, but some will be available with a hydrogen-electric powertrain. Highly automated driving technology will be available, too, though BMW stressed its EVs will be enjoyable to drive." MINI BRAND WILL BE ALL ELECTRIC "Mini will become a pure electric car brand by the early 2030s, it’s been announced. The last new combustion-engined Mini – widely rumoured to be the next Mini Hatch – will arrive in 2025, and by 2027 Mini expects electric vehicles to account for more than half of all sales, the BMW-owned British brand said." according to Car Dealre Magazine: "The transition to electric will be complete by the early 2030s, when Mini’s entire range will be electric-powered. The announcement is significant because while the move will put the firm in line with the UK’s 2030 ban on the sale of petrol and diesel cars, it will affect all markets around the world Mini operates in. That means other major markets such as Asia and the United States, where petrol and diesel sales can currently continue after 2030, will also only have electric Minis. The Mini Electric is currently the only EV the brand sells." https://cardealermagazine.co.uk/publish/mini-to-become-all-electric-car-brand-in-the-next-decade/219460 U.S. ARRIVAL OF THE ID.4 EV This month marks a major milestone in Volkswagen’s story: the arrival of the ID.4, the company’s first long-range electric SUV in dealers across America Compared to a traditional vehicle, an electric vehicle requires several different steps along its journey from factory to dealer. EVs require special handling when in transit from the factory to dealerships, including maintaining a sufficient state of charge to complete the journey. Preparation for the arrival of the ID.4 in the U.S. started more than two years ago. Over that time, many Volkswagen dealers have installed Level 2 charging stations and appropriate vehicle lifts to unload the products into showrooms and service bays. MG5 ESTATE FOR EUROPE MG announces two new generation battery electric vehicles which will enter the European market later this year. The new and exciting MG Marvel R Electric – a high-tech, luxurious ‘lifestyle’ SUV for the C-segment – and the new MG5 Electric: world’s first 100% electric station wagon. the MG5 Electric offers a range of more than 400 kilometres (WLTP). In this case, the electric motor delivers 135 kW (184 ps) and 280 Nm torque. It also offers quick charging capability at a public charging point (AC) due to the 11 kW on-board 3-phase charger. And it’s suitable for fast-charging (DC) to charge the battery up to 80% in just 30 minutes. And it can tow up to 500kg. A roof load of 75kg. The European market launch of the new MG5 Electric is scheduled for October this year. Plus, MG Pilot – advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). V2L 2,500W power supply for external usage. VW INCREASES TO $86 BILLION SPENDING ON EVS "Volkswagen Group is boosting spending on technologies for electric and self driving cars, while increasing production of EVs in its German home market. Investments in battery-powered vehicles, autonomous driving and related future technologies will rise to about 73 billion euros ($86 billion), or half the company's 150-billion euro budget through 2025, VW said in a statement." says Automotive News Europe: "That's up from 60 billion euros a year ago, or 40 percent of investments planned at the time. The investment is part of VW Group's new five-year planning cycle, approved by the supervisory board on Friday. The investment envisages production of about 26 million full-electric cars in Europe, China and the U.S. by 2030. Under the plan presented on Friday, VW is doubling its planned spending on digitalization to 27 billion euros, as it seeks to develop a seamless, software-based vehicle operating system. This includes spending on the group's Car.Software organization launched earlier this year. The goal is to build a proprietary software stack, which will be deployed in Audi’s Artemis project to develop an advanced, self-driving electric vehicle by 2024. The company's own share in software will increase to 60 percent from 10 percent, VW said." https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/vw-increases-spending-electric-self-driving-cars-86-billion DAIMLER WILL SHRINK WITH SHIFT TO ELECTRIC AND AUTONOMOUS CARS "Daimler will be a smaller company five years from now, focused on capturing recurring revenues with software-based services as Mercedes-Benz seeks to redefine luxury in an era of electric self-driving cars, Chief Executive Ola Kaellenius said." according to Autoblog; "Jobs will disappear because it takes less time to build an electric car than a conventional gasoline or diesel version. That's because an electric car's battery and motor have only 200 components, compared with at least 1,400 parts found in a combustion engine and transmission, according to analysts at ING. The shift away from fossil fuel requires the carmaker to double down on efficiency so it can free up resources to build electric and self-driving cars, Kallenius said. Daimler also wants to offer customers new digital services so it can make money with new, recurring sources of revenue such as assisted driving functionalities and infotainment services when it unveils a new vehicle car operating system in 2024." https://www.autoblog.com/2020/11/15/daimler-smaller-evs-autonomous-cars-five-year-future/ FIA OPENS TENDER FOR WRC HYBRID CHARGING INFRASTRUCTURE "For the Rally1 cars (which the current top WRC class will be called), the hybrid system developed between Compact Dynamics and Kreisel will come with a white label-supplied ‘plug-In’ charging infrastructure. The 3.9kWh battery in the car is supplied with an 8kW charging unit that will allow the battery to go from 20% of charge to 80% in approximately 20 minutes. A 15-minute ‘top-up’ is proposed for competitors at each service point, which the FIA notes will afford a brand an opportunity to display their offer." says Professional Motorsport World: "The power generation and charging facilities will also incorporate power supplies for teams’ garages, for lighting, heating, catering and welding operations. The FIA notes that tenderers have to plan for an average of 10-20 Rally1 cars on each event." https://www.pmw-magazine.com/news/race-series-news/fia-opens-tender-for-wrc-hybrid-charging-infrastructure.html NISSAN QASHQAI TO RECEIVE E-POWER HYBRID DRIVE "Nissan has provided a first preview of the third-generation Qashqai, which is scheduled for launch next year. The compact SUV will be the first Nissan model in Europe to be equipped with the e-Power hybrid drive but a plug-in hybrid is not planned for the time being." reports electrive: "The e-Power drive is a serial hybrid system, not a parallel hybrid as in the HEVs from Toyota. In the drive technology that Nissan is already using on its home market in Japan, the wheels are always driven purely electrically. The main energy source of the drive system is not the battery, but a gasoline engine that functions exclusively as a generator." Ponz Pandikuthira, Vice President Product Planning at Nissan in Europe: "“In Japan, they typically don’t go above 50-65mph. Here in Europe, you do 80-85mph on a regular basis, At those speeds, you end up depleting the battery very quickly, so the range extender has to work really hard to keep the energy going and then it goes out of its range of efficiency”. It’s not yet clear how the Japanese company solved this problem." And yet, no Qashqai PHEV. https://www.electrive.com/2020/11/13/new-nissan-qashqai-to-receive-e-power-hybrid-drive/ UPCOMING ELECTRIC GENESIS EG80 TO GET WIRELESS CHARGING OPTION "Hyundai Motor Group's Genesis is working on its first all-electric car "eG80", based on the group's new E-GMP platform, and according to the latest news, it will offer a wireless charging option." says InsideEVs: "Genesis would like to be a pioneer in wireless charging and to achieve that it will partner with WiTricity, which supplies the technology compliant with the new SAE J2954 standard. It will be an option and with a basic power level of about 6-8 kW, as the market for wireless charging is really in its infancy. Moreover, it requires a special installation (the ground assembly) at the customer's property. The unveiling of the Genesis EV is expected in the second quarter of 2021, while the market launch is set for late 2021." https://insideevs.com/news/454400/electric-genesis-eg80-wireless-charging-option/ BMW IS EXPORTING ITS CHINA-MADE IX3 ELECTRIC SUV TO 39 COUNTRIES "BMW is now exporting its China-built iX3 electric SUV to countries around the world. The iX3 is being built by Brilliance BMW, the automaker's joint venture with Chinese vehicle manufacturer Brilliance Auto, which was launched in March 2003." says FutureCar: "The first China-made iX3s were shipped on Nov. 11 from the Port of Dalian to 39 countries and districts, mainly in Europe. It's the first time for the Brilliance BMW joint venture to export vehicles on such a large scale. Brilliance BMW will export a total of 1,600 vehicles this year and increase the amount to 12,000 for next year, according to Gasgoo. The new BMW iX3 is built with the fifth generation of BMW's eDrive technology, which includes a battery back with an energy density 30% higher than that of the previous generation, according to BMW. The iX3 can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 6.8 seconds." https://www.futurecar.com/4254/BMW-is-Exporting-its-China-Made-iX3-Electric-SUV-to-39-Countries UK EXPECTED TO BAN SALE OF NEW PETROL AND DIESEL CAR FROM 2030 "Boris Johnson is understood to be planning to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars within a decade, with reports that the ban will be brought forward by five years." reports The Guardian: "Johnson is expected to announce the measure amid a raft of new environmental policies next week, according to a report in the Financial Times, which attributes the news to industry and Whitehall sources. The government hopes the policy will energise the market for electric cars in the UK and help the country achieve its climate targets, including reducing emissions of greenhouse gases to net zero by 2050." https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/nov/14/uk-expected-to-ban-sale-of-new-petrol-and-diesel-cars-from-2030 TESLA ANNOUNCED ITS FIRST EUROPEAN GIGAFACTORY 1 YEAR AGO TODAY On Nov 12th I missed this anniversary from Teslarati: "One year ago today, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that the automaker would open a production facility in Germany. Now, the new CEO Jim Farley has reversed the company’s position, saying on Friday that making its own EVs would actually be a pretty solid way for Ford to create more jobs." writes Jalopnik: "Farley spoke at the Reuters Automotive Summit teleconference on Friday, where he commented on the growth of the EV market and the very viable concerns that come along with it. Creating an in-house battery will be difficult, and from Hackett’s point of view, wouldn’t really make sense for Ford if there are viable, well-made battery cells out there that require very little effort to install in a car. And from a business perspective, he wasn’t wrong. If you’re looking specifically at how you can cut down manpower in order to make a larger profit, outsourcing a battery cell isn’t a big deal." https://jalopnik.com/ford-might-start-making-its-own-batteries-to-create-mor-1845679421 VW TRADEMARKS JUNGLEZZ NAME, HINTS AT OFF-ROAD EV "A wild trademark appeared recently on the European Intellectual Property Office. Show #864 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 11th August 2020. EV EVENT ON THURSDAY IN CINCINNATI "Our fourth E-Vroom Zoom will provide insight into how dealerships are being educated on and playing an increasing role in the adoption of electric vehicles. We'll hear from Trey Woeste of Beechmont Auto Group. EV Cincy is an initiative designed to help build awareness and educate the public about the benefits of electric vehicles and the EV activities happening in and around Cincinnati." What are E-Vroom Zooms? E-Vroom Zooms are online video conference chats about electric vehicles and the EV work being done in Cincinnati. While they may include a powerpoint presentation, they are not to be confused with a webinar where the speaker has limited interaction with the audience. The purpose of E-Vroom Zooms is to spark conversation to educate so our calls will be more aligned with a video conference format where interaction is encouraged; it is not presenter-centric, but rather group-centric; and everyone can see everyone (video will be encouraged). " says Yahoo! News: "Mercedes has already confirmed the final version of its entry-level EV will be revealed sometime this year, and to ease the wait, the German luxury marque has now dropped some images taken in snowy Sweden. A prototype carrying what seems to be the full production body has been photographed while undergoing harsh winter tests as Mercedes strives to make its electric cars work flawlessly even at temperatures well below 0 degrees Celsius. A boxy EQB serving as the zero-emissions equivalent of the GLB is due to go on sale in 2021." https://uk.news.yahoo.com/2021-mercedes-eqa-teased-thinly-124000196.html NIO LAUNCHES PRODUCTION OF THE EC6 The Chinese electric car manufacturer Nio has started production of its third model after the ES8 and ES6. The start of production at the indebted company is also made possible thanks to a framework agreement with the city of Hefei, which is providing Nio with a billion-euro cash injection." writes Chris Randall for Electrive: "The EC6, announced in January, is an SUV coupé that is to be delivered from September onwards and offered with three different battery capacities: 70, 84 and 100 kWh. The latter option is a new liquid-cooled battery package from Nio." https://www.electrive.com/2020/02/26/nio-launches-production-of-the-ec6/ ELECTRIFY CANADA TO PROVIDE EV CHARGING FOR NEW VW E-GOLF CUSTOMERS Electrify Canada announced its latest step in advancing electric vehicle adoption with a new charging agreement with Volkswagen Canada. This agreement will provide 2020 VW e-Golf drivers with two years of complimentary 30-minute charging sessions. Customers who purchased a 2020 Volkswagen e-Golf can enroll in and manage their charging plan through the newly launched Electrify Canada mobile app, available for Android and iPhone. Drivers can then redeem 30-minute charging sessions at any charging station along the Electrify Canada network. GROUPE RENAULT AND FERROVIAL TO LAUNCH EV CAR-SHARING SERVICE IN PARIS "Groupe Renault and Ferrovial are launching a ZITY free-floating car-sharing service in Paris. n March 2020, a fleet of 500, 100% electric Renault ZOE cars, equipped with ZITY technology will be made available to Parisians on a self-service basis using a free mobile application. This is a flexible scheme that responds to a strong trend: 20% of the capital's inhabitants use car-sharing." according to FleetNews.co.uk: " The battery levels are guaranteed. The technology on board the Renault ZOE ZITY enables all the information on the dashboard, including the battery level, to be displayed in real time. If the battery falls below the minimum level required, the vehicle is no longer available for hire and is quickly taken in hand by the ZITY teams to recharge it." https://www.fleetnews.co.uk/smart-transport/news/groupe-renault-and-ferrovial-to-launch-ev-car-sharing-service-in-paris THE VW THE 1-SPEED GEARBOX All drive systems for European and North American e-vehicles based on the MEB – including the 1-speed gearbox – are manufactured at the component plant in Kassel. With a vehicle with a combustion engine, the torque increases along with the engine speed and then falls again. With an electric drive system, however, the maximum torque is available immediately and remains constant over a wide range of speeds. The use of a multi-speed gearbox to achieve the desired speed or the necessary torque along the speed curve is therefore not absolutely necessary. The maximum speed of 160 km/h is reached at a maximum of 16,000 rpm. For the ID.3 which is optimized for maximum range, the use of a single gear for all driving situations is perfectly adequate. https://www.volkswagenag.com/en/news/2020/02/in-brief-the-all-rounder-the-1-speed-gearbox.html MAGNA SHOWCASING EMOBILITY TECHNOLOGIES IN NEW E4 DEMONSTRATOR CAR Magna’s roadmap to e-mobility includes technologies showcased in the all-new e4 technology demonstrator car, which made its debut during the company’s winter test-driving activities in northern Sweden." says Green Car Congress: "The e4 technology demonstrator includes highly integrated PSM-type (Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) eDrive systems on the front and rear axle. The unit on the front is equipped with a mechanical differential, while the unit on the rear has a twin-clutch torque vectoring system. Both eDrives, including the gearbox, electric motors, inverters, inverter software, and vehicle control strategy, are developments from Magna." https://www.greencarcongress.com/2020/02/20200227-magna.html BMW I4 CAUGHT DURING COLD WEATHER TESTING: INTERIOR REVEALED "Ahead of the BMW i4's world introduction at the Geneva Motor Show, we have some spy shots of one in Northern Sweden during cold-weather testing. BMW's upcoming i4 is an extremely important vehicle for the brand. It's basically their first serious swipe at the all-electric premium car segment, with conventional BMW styling." reports Tom for InsideEVs; "In the i4, BMW has made what BMW loyalists have been asking for, an all-electric 5-seater with long-range and BMW performance. It's basically BMW's first real attempt to regain some of the market share they have lost to Tesla. The i4 is rumored to have two battery options, an 80 kWh battery, and a 60 kWh entry-level option with the naming to be i4 80 and i4 60, respectively. The i4 will be available in rear-wheel and all-wheel drive versions and utilize BMW's "fifth-generation eDrive"." https://insideevs.com/news/400882/bmw-i4-spy-photos-interior-testing/ THE BMW INEXT IN THE HOTTEST PHASE OF ITS SERIES DEVELOPMENT. the BMW iNEXT is completing a further chapter of its overall vehicle testing under particularly demanding conditions. Intensive test runs in the freezing cold at the polar circle are now being followed by a contrasting program in the Kalahari in Southern Africa, where in addition to extreme heat and solar radiation, permanent dust formation and off-road terrain with its sand, pebble and gravel tracks pose exceptional challenges for the BMW Group’s technology flagship. In this literally hot phase of the series development process, not only do the drive and suspension components of the BMW iNEXT, a car designed for all-electric mobility, provide proof of their functional safety, durability and reliability, but also the car’s bodywork, interior, driver assistance systems and digitalisation technology. In temperatures that would drain any mobile phone battery in no time at all, the integrated cooling concept for the high-voltage battery, the electric motor and the vehicle electronics of the BMW iNEXT stands the test. Moreover, the interior air conditioning, which operates by means of thermal pump technology, its control system and all further components of the vehicle electronics are subjected to the extreme conditions of the desert climate in order to prove their series maturity. Production of the series version of the BMW iNEXT will commence at the BMW Dingolfing plant in 2021. Designed as a modern Sports Activity Vehicle. https://www.press.bmwgroup.com/global/article/detail/T0305924EN/the-bmw-inext-in-the-hottest-phase-of-its-series-development 2021 SKODA OCTAVIA RS IV FINAL TEASER VIDEO IS ELECTRIFYING "Skoda confirms its plug-in hybrid Octavia RS will match the output of VW's Golf GTE and SEAT's Cupra Leon PHEV" reports Motor1: "Using the same hardware package as the recently unveiled VW Golf GTE and the Cupra Leon PHEV, the Skoda Octavia RS iV will combine a turbocharged 1.4-liter gasoline engine with an electric motor." https://www.motor1.com/news/400952/skoda-octavia-rs-teaser-video/ NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week… How to persuade your friends, family and colleagues to buy an EV? MERCEDES EQB SPIED LOOKING ALMOST READY FOR PRODUCTION "Mercedes-Benz’ current range of all-electric vehicles for the masses consists of just two models. These are the EQC mid-size crossover and the EQV, a zero-emission people mover that was revealed in Frankfurt earlier this month. Another green model with a three-pointed star logo is currently under development and these are its first spy photos we can share." reports Motor1 who are always first to get spy shots: "Meet the Mercedes EQB, basically an all-electric version of the GLB crossover, which should become a relatively more affordable option for the customers than the EQC. In these shots, it’s seen testing on public roads together with another GLB prototype and trying to hide its exterior design. Judging by these photos, the EQB is in the advanced stages of development – it’s wearing its production body and lights, and – most likely – the final powertrain configuration is already underneath the skin. Speaking of the powertrain, word on the street is the EQB will offer a range of up to 310 miles (500 kilometers) at a single charge, but will probably lose the seven-seat cabin layout of the regular GLB." It does have a bit of the eSoul about it! https://www.motor1.com/news/371735/mercedes-eqb-spied-testing/ MERCEDES-BENZ IS PLAYING IT SAFE WITH BATTERIES AND DRIVING RANGE—FOR THE LONG HAUL "With the launch of the Mercedes-Benz EQC earlier this year for Europe, some seized on the fully electric luxury crossover’s driving range as a sign the brand just wan't keeping up." says Green Car Reports: "The EQC hasn’t yet been rated for range by the U.S. EPA (or arrived here yet) but with 80 kwh of usable rated capacity it’s expected to slot in for the U.S. at 10-20 percent less rated range than the 293-mile Europe’s WLTP cycle indicates—and with fewer miles per kwh than the Tesla Model X, which ekes 325 miles from about 95 kwh of usable capacity." According to Jochen Hermann, the head of eDrive development at Daimler AG: "“We don’t think it’s necessary to go for, let’s call it the last mile within the battery, I’d rather have something reliable, safe, and offer charging opportunities. Safety is number one within Mercedes—and safety also means reliability, quality, and long-term performance." https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1125098_mercedes-benz-is-playing-it-safe-with-batteries-and-driving-range-for-the-long-haul SKODA STARTS SERIAL PRODUCTION OF SUPERB IV PLUG-IN HYBRID Today, the first SUPERB iV rolled off the line at the SKODA AUTO Kvasiny plant. The new SKODA SUPERB iV plug-in hybrid is made exclusively in Kvasiny, where it is built on the same production line as SUPERB variants that are driven solely by a combustion engine. In the SUPERB iV, a 1.4 TSI petrol engine and an electric motor deliver a combined power output of 160 kW (218 PS). The all-electric range is up to 56 km in the WLTP cycle (35 miles); up to 930 km can be covered when combined with the petrol engine. InsideEVs adds: "Just like the Superb is directly related to the Passat, the Superb iV is directly related to the Passat GTE (the 2nd model evolution) with the same 13 kWh battery and up to 56 km (34.8 miles) of all-electric range under WLTP test cycle. Market launch of the Superb iV is scheduled for early 2020 with sedan and combi versions." TESLA “SMART” SUMMON WILL BE AVAILABLE ON OLDER MODEL S AND MODEL X WITH HARDWARE 2.0 "Tesla CEO Elon Musk has confirmed that the highly-anticipated “Smart Summon” feature will be available for all Autopilot vehicles with hardware 2.0 and above. The announcement comes just nine days after Musk said that the Summon software was “almost perfect“." writes TEslarati: "After Tesletter posted V10 release notes regarding “Smart” Summon on their official Twitter, a follower asked Elon Musk whether owners operating under Hardware 2.5 would have the capability to experience a feature on Tesla’s driving-assist software that will allow a vehicle to find its owner through the Tesla app. Musk replied, clarifying that the newly released “Smart” Summon will operate normally with all vehicles running at least Hardware 2." So that's cars made from October 2016 onwards. https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-smart-summon-wide-release-autopilot-hardware-2/ TESLA SAYS MODEL S PLAID COULD RECORD 7:05 NURBURGRING LAP NEXT MONTH "Tesla has made a lot of noise after bringing a couple of Model S prototypes to the Nurburgring for development of its new “Plaid” powertrain – and to chase down the Porsche Taycan’s electric sedan record. Earlier this week, it was reported that the “chassis prototypes”, as the company calls them, had lapped the circuit in 7:20." says CarScoops: "However, the electric car manufacturer doesn’t appear satisfied with that. In fact, it went as far as tweeting that the Model S Plaid may be able to record a 7:05 time when it returns to the German circuit for more testing next month ." https://www.carscoops.com/2019/09/tesla-says-model-s-plaid-could-record-705-nurburgring-lap-next-month/ FUTURE BMW 7 SERIES EV TO HAVE 670 HP, 120 KWH BATTERY "BMW’s plans regarding electrifying its range are picking up speed with a new CEO at the helm. We reported a while back that BMW is planning on launching a fully electric version of the 7 Series under the i7 moniker. Today, new reports coming in from Munich seem to confirm the electrification of the 7 Series." reports BMW Blog: "There are rumors around two versions of the BMW i7: the standard version and an i7S. The latter will have more range and will be more powerful, as you might expect. According to our info, the i7S will have a power output of around 670 HP and a 120 kWh battery. With these figures, the expected range in WLTP tests should be around 600 km (360 miles)." https://www.bmwblog.com/2019/09/18/rumor-future-bmw-7-series-ev-to-have-670-hp-120-kw-battery/ AIR POLLUTION PARTICLES FOUND ON FOETAL SIDE OF PLACENTAS – STUDY "Air pollution particles have been found on the foetal side of placentas, indicating that unborn babies are directly exposed to the black carbon produced by motor traffic" writes Damian Carrington in The Guardian: "It found thousands of the tiny particles per cubic millimetre of tissue in every placenta analysed. The link between exposure to dirty air and increased miscarriages, premature births and low birth weights is well established. The research suggests the particles themselves may be the cause, not solely the inflammatory response the pollution produces in mothers. A comprehensive global review concluded that air pollution may be damaging every organ and virtually every cell in the human body. Nanoparticles have also been found to cross the blood-brain barrier and billions have been found in the hearts of young city dwellers." Official website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com Harley-Davidson, Inc. announced that it has acquired StaCyc, Inc., They produce 12 and 16 EDRIVE, electric-powered bicycles specifically designed for kids. As a subsidiary, a Harley-Davidson branded version of StaCyc’s 12-inch and 16-inch models will be sold through select Harley-Davidson dealers. These Harley branded electric bikes will be available in the U.S. in the third quarter of 2019. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE It also appears Harley-Davidson is working on smaller electric scooters. They provided some prototypes to X-games athletes to ride around and they promoted them on Instagram. Many are wondering if they'll have an actual electric scooter model to put on the floor and sell to customers any time soon. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! Why is Harley-Davidson focusing on all these electric bicycles and scooters? My opinion is that Harley is realizing that many older generation riders are fading and they really need to grab the attention of the younger generation who have many choices. They want to get the Harley brand introduced to young riders of bicycles and scooters, thus when they get older they'll consider a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. They want to continue to create brand loyal riders as they have for many years. Additionally, they just released their first electric motorcycle, the LiveWire, in late 2018 and they're likely learning much about electric vehicles with the bicycles and scooters, so they can be a leader in that market in the future. Don't worry, I don't believe Harley is trying to get out of the game of traditional motorcycles that has driven the company for so many years. They are just realizing that change and innovation is the only way to survive and compete in the future. Listen in to this podcast episode as we get into detail about what's going on. Read More About Patreon here EVne.ws/patreon Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday Tuesday 12th February 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I can find today, and picked out the ones I think you need to know about. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Welcome to our newest member of the Patreon gang it’s a new EXECUTIVE PRODUCER CRAIG ROGERS who just went from $5 to $10. UPDATE ON MODEL 3 IN EUROPE AND CHINA Walter MacVane @EcoHeliGuy "Glovis Cosmos is entering the port of Zeebrugge. Now the question remains, 3000, or more Teslas on this ship? Welcome to Europe" @teslastars "While the #GlovisCosmos is in Zeebrugge unloading its cargo of Model 3, the #GrandAurora is showing up in the Açores. Arrival is scheduled for Friday 15th in the evening" WITRICITY ACQUIRES QUALCOMM HALO "WiTricity, a company that specializes in contactless EV charging, has acquired Qualcomm's rival wireless charging tech. The two are keeping quiet about the financial details, though they did reveal that Qualcomm will become a minority WiTricity shareholder as a result of the transaction. " reports Engadget for our first story today: "Ultimately, it gives WiTricity access to more than 1,500 new wireless battery charging patents and patent applications, which could see its contactless charging system become the EV industry standard. An MIT spinoff, WiTricity's system relies on a floor pad that radiates a magnetic field to refuel parked EVs. In 2016, the company announced a prototype in partnership with GM that could be deployed in public parking spaces and garages, offering power at both 7.7 kW and 11 kW. Qualcomm bought its "Halo" tech from the University of Auckland in 2011 as part of a "multi-million dollar" deal. It currently forms the backbone of its dynamic electric vehicle charging (DEVC) test track." In the comments Peterf says: "This is so dumb. You can accept the efficiency loss with a smartphone since it's such little energy but to charge a car with the reduced efficiency causes a lot of energy waste." https://www.engadget.com/2019/02/11/witricity-qualcomm-halo-ev-wireless-charging/ SPY SHOTS #1 - VW I.D. NEO / I.D. ONE We're a bit over run today with spy shots of future EV's in cold weather testing. And that's a nice problem to have because when cars are at that stage, they're not too far away from being outside your house. Volkswagen I.D. Neo - AutoExpress say: "Volkswagen will launch the I.D. (codenamed ‘Neo’ within the company) with a range of three battery capacities, and is aiming to significantly undercut the likes of the Hyundai Kona Electric and the Kia e-Niro with a starting price of just £22,500. As revealed by Auto Express towards the end of 2017, the first I.D. will be a five-door hatchback which, at 4.25 metres long, is almost identical in size to a Golf. The potential for extra cabin space can be seen in the proportions of the car in our spy images. The bonnet is much shorter than that of a Golf - it only needs to house an air conditioning system - allowing for much more space inside for occupants. Boot space is also expected to measure up closely to a Golf, so expect around 380 litres with all five seats in place." It starts at 205 miles at 48kWh for the slow one, up to 341 miles 62kWh for the fast one. They need to do 100,000 of these next year, Zwickau is aiming for 1,500 cars a day by 2021, and there will be fewer options for the spec to drive efficiency. OTA updates are confirmed now, as is permanent connectivity. https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/volkswagen/97043/volkswagen-id-neo-new-spy-shots-of-vws-2019-electric-hatch SPY SHOTS #2 - RENAULT CAPTUR Again from AutoExpress "A new Renault Captur crossover with plug-in hybrid power is being developed ahead of going on sale in early 2020. Renault is developing an all-new plug-in hybrid system making use of a Nissan-developed 1.6-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine and an electric drive system. The electric motor will occupy a dual role, both providing with petrol engine with additional torque and power, plus offering up to 30 miles of all-electric running." It will come with a 9.8kWh battery. https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/renault/captur/105085/new-2020-renault-captur-crossover-spied-out-in-the-cold SPY SHOTS #3 - BMW iNEXT The winter test centre of the BMW Group in Arjeplog, Sweden is the setting for the current complete vehicle tests. The test drives with the camouflaged BMW iNEXT are being conducted on snow-covered roads and ice-covered lakes, where low temperatures and minimal road friction dominate everyday testing. The cold poses a challenge, above all, for the electric motor, the high-voltage battery and the cooling system of the BMW iNEXT. The testing engineers also attach particular importance to the eDrive energy management system. They analyse the way in which the extreme sub-zero temperatures affect how the energy storage system recharges, how electricity is transferred to the electric motor, how the electrical system is supplied with energy and how the heating and air condition systems respond. The series production version of the BMW iNEXT will be manufactured in the BMW Plant in Dingolfing from 2021. NISSAN LEAF E-PLUS ORDERS POURING IN: EUROPE "Nissan has received more than 3,000 pre-orders for 3.ZERO Limited Edition of the latest LEAF e+ in Europe, since its unveiling about a month ago. That’s almost two-thirds of the planned run of 5,000 units of the exclusively well-equipped trim version." says Mark Kane over at InsideEVs.com: "Nearly half of those pre-orders come from… Norway, where the Nissan LEAF was the best-selling car of any kind or type in 2018." https://insideevs.com/nissan-leaf-e-plus-order-europe/ TESLA READIES FOR MODEL 3 CUSTOMER DELIVERIES IN CHINA AS CARGO SHIP ARRIVES AT PORT "Preparations to deliver the first batch of Tesla Model 3 vehicles to customers in China are underway with the recent arrival of cargo ship Glovis Symphony at the Port of Tianjin." according to Teslarati: " The carrier entered the port on Monday around 7 am local time after a 19-day journey from the San Francisco Bay Area where Tesla vehicles make their way from the company’s factory in Fremont to the loading dock. A shipment of Performance Model 3s received in Hong Kong last month seems to have primarily contained test drive and display vehicles." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-3-deliveries-china-cargo-shipment CHEVY BOLT & BAOJUN E100 LEAD GM GLOBAL EV SALES IN 2018 Back to InsideEVs and Wade Malone: "While plug-in General Motors deliveries dropped in the United States last year, the automaker saw a significant increase in global plug-in sales in 2018. The Chevy Bolt EV again led the electric offerings, clocking in at 27,918 units delivered worldwide. However, The Baojun E100/E200 also impressed with 25,888 sales in China. The Chevy Volt follows close behind with 25,298 units sold globally. Baojun (jointly owned by General Motors (GM) and SAIC Motor) recently expanded availability of their tiny two seat EV. The recently launched E200 will be replacing the E100 on the market." https://insideevs.com/bolt-ev-baojun-e100-gm-plug-in-sales-2018/ COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Keep your comments coming in on email and YouTube… Are you part of a EV club or association online or physically? Thursday 26th April 2018. BMW iX3 TO BE MADE IN, AND EXPORTED FROM, CHINA The biggest car launch today was technically a concept, but let’s report on it because it’s such big news. The massively popular BMW X3 is finally confirmed as being an electric model, the iX3. And equally as big news, it is set to be made in China and be exported to USA and Europe. And it’s very similar to the X3 apart from BMW playing around with the kidney style grill. It will enter production in 2020 and is the first example I can think of to be a luxury upmarket car made in China and exported. What happened to quality only coming from Germany? And BMW sell a lot of SUV in North America so it’s a calculated risk, and means a lot for their reputation. They already make the plug in Z1 in China. The iX3 will have a range of 400km which is 250miles, but there’s no direction on whether. For comparison the new 40kWh Nissan LEAF has a 150mile EPA range. And it’s a strong effort to go up against the Jaguar I-PACE, the Audi e-tron Quattro, the Mercedes EQC crossover due next year in 2019. So smart money is on a 70kWh battery pack, and they’ve confirmed 150kW charge speeds. The motor is a very reasonable 200kW of power. The platform will come with battery packs from 60kWh to 120kWh depending on the needs of performance. Electrive say: “The core of the iX3 is very compact. The fifth generation eDrive contains the electric motor, transmission and performance electronics in one component. A further novelty is the fact that the electric motor was designed without using any rare-earth metals. Added to this development, are the new battery specs, which have improved performance characteristics, range, size and flexibility, according to the manufacturer.” NISSAN’S LEAF WHICH IS A SYLPHY A new car was launched by Nissan yesterday – welcome to the world the Nissan Sylphy. From the front it’s a LEAF, from the back it’s a pretty generic sedan, from the side, it’s a LEAF-and-a-bit on the back. It’s Nissan’s first EV built for China and yes it does share the LEAF platform. Based on the Chinese cycle it’s good for 210 miles or 340kms. That sounds to me like the 40kWh AESC batteries and not the new larger 60kWh LG Chem batteries, because surely that range would be higher. Given that the Chinese standards are more forgiving than the EPA. It does feature the e-Pedal technology which has everyone impressed. It will be on sale this year. But will we see it in the US? Will we see it in Europe like the BMW? Nope. I would expect it to be very cheap however based on comments from Carlos Ghosn that even their own Nissan LEAF is too expensive for the Chinese market. VOLVO XC40 PHEV Volvo was the first major name to say all their cars will be electrified by 2019, and now they’ve said half of its annual, worldwide sales will be electric cars within 7 years. And a lot can happen in 7 years! 2025 is the year when China wants 7 million electric cars being sold a year that’s 20% of all sales. We’ve seen the XC40 T5 Plug-in Hybrid at Auto China 2018 in Beijing, in their No.1 market in China. It has a 1.5litre three-cylinder engine coupled with the electric motor, and of course can run on electricity only, but we don’t know how far. At the show Volvo are only showing off cars with plugs – those being the XC40, 60 and 90. Volvo’s owner Geely has developed the powertrain which is also set to be used in Lynk&Co models, and for Geely’s own models in China. Autocar say: “Three main drive modes will be available with the T5 model: Hybrid, Power and Pure. The first will work to most efficiently combine both parts of the powertrain, while power will maximise the output of both. The final will harness only the electric motor.” HONDA EVERUS CONCEPT In Beijng Honda has shown off another concept, and another stunner. The Everus – a mass produced B segment car for the Chinese market. Again the show in China is being used to show off the body and styling without any firm details of the drivetrain but it’s due to be in the hands of customers this year, and built by a joint venture, as is the deal with China, with GAC Group. TOYOTA WILL HAVE TO GET SOME PLUGS Toyota might be famous for running ad campaigns saying we don’t believe in plugging in our hybrids, but someone forgot to tell the engineers. That’s because the Corolla and Levin are being shown off at Auto China 2018 to be on sale next year, and a full BEV in 2020. A full BEV for Toyota? But only for China! It’s based on the C-HR compact SUV. The Chinese partner for Toyota is GAC. The plug ins are said to do 50kms on pure electric alone, obviously made in China. These are the start of 10 new models, and also a R&D centre in China, to move forward with pure battery tech. NEW BRAND FOR VW Volkswagen has launched a new car brand at Auto China called SOL, and the first car under that, the E20X. And again it’s the lovechild of VW with a domestic maker, JAC. Like the Honda it will be on sale this year, taking same parts of the JAC iEV7S, running 186 miles on one charge, it has smart charging, self-parking and luxuries like parking cameras. I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested.
