A few months back I hosted Rodi Basso on the podcast where he talked about the E1 Electric Powerboat racing series and it was an excellent episode so, I decided to invite his co-founder Alejandro Agag to come on the podcast to talk about Formula E, and the new extreme off-road electric racing motorsport series Extreme E.Formula E, if you are not familiar with it is a zero carbon motorsport series, akin to Formula 1 except the cars are 100% electric. There are some more differences that Alejandro goes into in the episode which make it very cool to watch and/or attend. Then there's the new Extreme E off-road series. Alejandro Agag is an entrepreneur and a bold visionary whose career trajectory has taken him from politics in his native Spain to becoming the Founder and CEO of the electric street racing series, Formula E. His self-proclaimed addiction to disrupting the motor-sport industry has seen him tear up the motor-sport rulebook in the name of equality and the environment. Born in Madrid in 1970, Alejandro enjoyed an international upbringing in Madrid, Paris, and New York then studied Economics and Business at the Colegio Universitario de Estudios Financieros. Having been actively involved in politics while at University, Alejandro quickly moved up the ranks of the international relations department due to his knowledge of languages. He was elected International Secretary of NNGG at their congress in 1994 and in 1999 won a seat in the European Parliament, becoming the youngest Spanish person to ever do so. In the same year Alejandro graduated, he was offered the position of Deputy Secretary General of the European People's Party. In 1996 the Center-right won the elections in Spain, and Alejandro was offered the position of designated aid to the President of the Government, José María Aznar. At only 28, Alejandro was elected a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the Partido Popular. In 2000, he led the Parliaments report on antitrust policy, and was active in redrafting the present antitrust rules. However, in 2001 Alejandro decided to leave the world of politics in order to further a career in business and sport. Together with his business partner Flavio Briatore, he purchased the F1 TV rights in Spain. A few years later, Alejandro purchased the Campos Racing GP2 Team and revamped it into the highly successful Barwa Addax Team. Alejandro quickly realised that many sponsors were withdrawing from Formula 1 because it was not a green sport and made the radical decision to create a cleaner version. He, together with business partner Enrique Bañuelos, began Formula E Holdings, winning the tender to promote the new FIA Formula E Championship. Formula E Holdings went on to set up an electric car racing series in ten different cities around the world. Through Formula-E, Alejandro became even more fervent about climate action and was convinced he could do more with motor-sport’s colossal viewership to promote change. He is now fearlessly taking sport to distant and perilous places like the Arctic, rainforests, deserts, and oceans in order to shine a spotlight on the challenges we face with the climate crisis. This bold venture is an FIA-sanctioned international off-road racing series that uses spec electric SUVs to race in the most remote parts of the world. Never one to shy away from a challenge, Alejandro is also on a mission to bring equality to motor-sport. He got the idea of mixed teams from the mixed doubles format in tennis, in which the women and the men on the team are equally important to a victory and would be standing together in triumph on the podium. He acknowledges he can only play the role he has within his power and so he is determined to make a difference where he can – in the sport he is most passionate about. Alejandro has been named as one of the 10 "movers and shakers" of the Spanish economy by the Financial Times, Spanish "Businessman of the Year" by GQ Magazine, and described as a "political hopeful, economist, banker and indefatigable dealmaker" with a “priceless” rolodex due to his extensive range of political and business contacts all over the world. Useful links https://www.fiaformulae.com/ https://www.extreme-e.com/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alejandro_Agag Our Favourite Quotes: "You have to take criticism as a motivation, the bigger the criticism the bigger the motivation to prove them wrong.” "I think every company, every industry, and every person needs to become a pragmatic environmentalist." "We are choking in the cities. So we need electric cars to basically clean the air inside the cities. And that was really the objective of Formula E to improve the technology to change the perception of people about electric cars. And we are succeeding in that. The technology is improving massively. We have the Generation Three coming which is going to be an incredible leap in terms of performance of these Electric Formula cars."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This is our second episode of an Outrage + Optimism investigative series on The Future of Transport. There’s no denying that for over a century, fossil fuels have played a key role in humanity’s progress. But at a cost. They account for two-thirds of global greenhouse-gas emissions, and the pollution from burning them kills more than 4 million people a year. So in a year where cars sat unused, and oil prices crashed...what is the future of fuels? We know that in order to meet the Paris Agreement, we need to reduce CO2 emissions by 50% by 2030. Because even though COVID-19 is expected to reduce energy-related CO2 emissions by 7% this year, we need massive changes in how we move people and things. So will we see the end of the internal combustion engine? How will the world go electric? Can hydrogen scale to meet our energy demands? Our hosts Tom Rivett-Carnac, Christiana Figueres and Paul Dickinson pull out the roadmap to a zero-emission future, hit the road looking for answers to a decarbonized transport sector with experts who are in the driver's seat.

Our sport has a unique ability to reach, unite and empower millions of people globally, and its return is being eagerly awaited worldwide. The world’s top sporting events are some of the world’s most watched, bringing enormous visibility. Athletes and racing drivers like Lewis Hamilton are powerful role models that inspire others and lead by example. The events of recent weeks and the support for Black Lives Matter has shown that motorsport has an opportunity to bring the world together and to raise public awareness of societal issues and solutions. We had already seen signs before the pandemic crisis that sponsors and manufacturers were looking for sport to demonstrate a sense of purpose and it is increasingly clear that in the post Covid world, sport risks looking irrelevant if it does not have a higher purpose than just entertainment. In the FIA eSport Conference MSN president James Allen tackled this subject with a panel featuring Formula E founder and Chairman Alejandro Agag, Susie Wolff, who is team principal of Rokit Venturi Formula E team and the founder of the Dare to be Different initiative to bring more females into the sport; Andrea Adamo team principal of Hyundai motorsport, Bob Bell former CTO of Renault and Mercedes F1 teams and founder of Grid4Good.org and Yath Gangakumaran, Director of Strategy and Business Development, F1

Show #532   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 18th July 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.             Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Welcome to a new EXECUTIVE PRODUCER JOHN LACEY FROM CLICK CLACK VIDEO NZ – “I bought my first EV late last year, for which you are partly responsible. The 'slippery slope' for me was discovering your podcast, I was driving a hybrid at the time (one of the 'self charging' variety!), and each time I listened to an episode it made me feel good. In a world where there is so much pessimism and bad news stories, it was great to hear such positive stories, stories of hope, stories of people helping change the world and our future. When I arrive at a clients' address, I tell them 'I have been driving on sunshine', it's a real conversation starter, one that I hope will kickstart the process of them thinking about an EV purchase.”   LEXUS WILL REINVENT ITS DESIGN LANGUAGE AS IT ELECTRIFIES ITS FULL LINE "Lexus and parent company Toyota pioneered gasoline-electric hybrid technology more than two decades ago, but both have been reluctant to release a fully electric model. This policy is set to change during the 2020s, and Digital Trends learned Lexus plans to offer an electrified variant of every nameplate in its lineup by 2025." writes Ronan Glon for Digital Trends.   Koji Sato, the vice president of Lexus defined electrified as: "We include hybrid, plug-in hybrid, electric, and fuel cell in our strategy. The in-wheel motor is just a concept, it will take years to make that technology possible, but we will continue to pursue this exciting technology."   "While full technical specifications remain under wraps, Sato revealed Lexus will soon invest a substantial amount of money into a platform developed specifically to underpin electric cars. His research and development department is also working on in-wheel electric motors, a setup in which the four wheels operate independently, though he conceded the technology isn’t ready for production yet."   https://www.digitaltrends.com/cars/lexus-plans-to-electrify-its-entire-portfolio-of-cars-by-2025/   AUDI STARTS WORKING ON FACTORY FOR E-TRON GT ELECTRIC CAR PRODUCTION IN ‘LATE 2020’ "Audi is working on its first electric sedan, the e-tron GT, unveiled at the LA auto show last year. It is now starting preparation work at a factory in Germany to start production in ‘late 2020’." according to Fred at Electrek: "The German automaker also surprised some by saying that they will be quick to bring the car to market by leveraging the powertrain developed by Porsche for the Taycan. Now Audi announced that the e-tron GT will be built on the same assembly line as the Audi R8 at the Böllinger Höfe factory in Germany in 2020."   https://electrek.co/2019/07/17/audi-e-tron-gt-electric-car-production-late-2020/   UK GOV HANDS JAGUAR LAND ROVER £500M FOR EV DEVELOPENT "The government has handed Jaguar Land Rover a £500m loan guarantee to help accelerate its progress in the global electric vehicle race." according to the Guardian: "Theresa May said the loan guarantee would help Britain’s biggest carmaker sell the next generation of electric cars around the world. She told a meeting of industry leaders at Downing Street on Monday that the funding pot would include £500m from UK Export Finance alongside another £125m from commercial lenders."   I'm trying to clarify what a load GUARANTEE is compared to a loan. The article continues: "The roundtable talks included executives from Aston Martin, BMW, Nissan and Vauxhall as well as energy groups BP, Shell and National Grid. The companies have agreed to set up a green mobility transition board that will formally bring together government, industry and environmental groups to coordinate plans for a switch from traditional to electric vehicles."   https://www.theguardian.com/business/2019/jul/15/jaguar-land-rover-offered-500m-loan-to-develop-electric-cars   HWA TO REIGNITE RACING RIVALRIES IN EXTREME E HWA AG is the latest team to join Extreme E for the all-new electric SUV off-road racing series’ inaugural 2021 campaign. The move will see one of the sport’s deep-running rivalries recommence in an entirely different sphere, with HWA’s long-time Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) sparring partner ABT Sportline having entered the Extreme E fold last week. Alejandro Agag, Founder and CEO of Formula E – operating partner of Extreme E – said: “HWA is a highly successful operation and a major, title-winning name in motorsport, so it is fantastic to be able to welcome them into our Extreme E family. Extreme E offers an entirely unique proposition in motor racing, with cutting-edge E-SUVs racing head-to-head across five of the most remote locations on the planet with a brand-new engineering challenge for teams and drivers to overcome."   JAY LENO ON TESLA   [audio from CNBC]   NOT EVERYBODY TOLERATES CREAKY GERMAN BUREAUCRACY "After hearing about Tesla customers suffering unnecessarily long waiting times for vehicle registration in Berlin and Hamburg, Tesla boss Elon Musk simply called the cities’ mayors." reports Electrive: "Berlin mayor Michael Müller and Hamburg’s mayor Peter Tschentscher apparently got an earful of the US entrepreneur’s mind when he got on the blower. While he was at it, Elon Musk called French Prime Minister Emmanuel Macron with the same complaint about French vehicle registration delays"   https://www.electrive.com/2019/07/17/not-everybody-tolerates-creaky-german-bureaucracy/   TRUCKS 1 - LIGHTNING SYSTEMS ALL-ELECTRIC MEDIUM-DUTY VEHICLES SELECTED FOR STATE OF CALIFORNIA CONTRACT Lightning Systems announced that its all-electric powertrains for Ford and Chevrolet medium-duty trucks and buses are now offered on a California state contract. State agencies and city and county governments throughout California can order Class 3 to 6 shuttle buses, cargo vans, box trucks, cab-over vehicles, and stripped chassis models under the program. Vehicles eligible include the Ford Transit 350HD Passenger Van and Cargo Van, Ford E-450 Cutaway Chassis, Ford F-59 Stripped Chassis, and Chevrolet 6500XD Low Cab Forward Truck.   https://www.greencarcongress.com/2019/07/20190717-lightning.html   TRUCKS 2 - SUPER STORE INDUSTRIES FIRST DAIRY MANUFACTURER TO DEPLOY CLASS 8 ELECTRIC TRUCKS Orange EV and California-based Super Store Industries (SSI) announced the deployment of Orange EV T-Series pure electric terminal trucks to multiple SSI facilities, supporting both grocery distribution and dairy and beverage manufacturing.   Mike Saxton, Orange EV Chief Commercial Officer - "Super Store Industries is the first dairy manufacturer in the U.S. to deploy a pure-electric Class 8 truck. SSI is taking the lead, eliminating emissions with 100% electric yard trucks while reducing costs and accelerating payback. Orange EV trucks cost less in fuel, maintenance, and other diesel-related costs, and when operated in California, can generate a significant additional income stream."   https://www.greencarcongress.com/2019/07/20190717-orange.html   TOYOTA BANG THE HYDROGEN DRUM (AGAIN) From Gill Nowell on Twitter: “Delighted to be at an event on future of low emission vehicles in the UK today. Interesting to hear @ToyotaUK Manager, Alternative Fuels, dwelling on challenges of battery electric vehicles. Clear focus is hydrogen." They dismissed EVs as being challenged because of power station emisisons, battery life, recycling, vehicle cost, vehicle range, charge time and access to infrastructure.   [audio]   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   TESLA’S NEW CLIMATE OPTION, THE ‘PARTY MODE’ IS DETECTED "It has almost been a year since Tesla CEO Elon Musk teased a new Keep Climate On feature specially designed for party animals and campers — now a Tesla hacker who goes by the name of ‘green’ just released a screenshot showing the new ‘Party Mode’ button added to the climate options." report xautoworld.com today: "Bjørn Nyland tested the ‘Keep Climate On’ option in extreme winter temperatures of -15°C/5°F and was able to sleep inside his Tesla Model X. However, the ‘Keep Climate On’ option turns off the car and most of its functions except for the heating or cooling functionality but in ‘Party Mode’ it seems like while the car is parked the center touchscreen and ambient lighting will keep working for the party animals or campers. According to Elon Musk’s statement above, the power outlets/USB ports will also keep working until the Party Mode is On, like the Dog Mode climate feature the Party will roll on until the battery reaches a min threshold of 20%."   https://www.xautoworld.com/tesla/party-mode-coming-soon/   LEONARDO DICAPRIO-PRODUCED DOCUMENTARY ‘AND WE GO GREEN’ "“And We Go Green,” a new documentary about electric street racing, will have its world debut at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Variety has learned." writes Brett Lang for Variety.com: "The behind-the-scenes vérité look at the ABB FIA Formula E Championship chronicles how the groundbreaking electric car racing series has matured from upstart championship to the world’s fastest-growing sport in four short years. In addition to offering compelling racing footage “And We Go Green” also dovetails with DiCaprio’s interest in combating global warming and air pollution. “And We Go Green” will screen [tomorrow] at Cannes. In addition to the filmmakers and DiCaprio, guests at the screening will include Formula E founder and CEO Alejandro Agag, former Formula E driver Nelson Piquet Jr., Formula E reigning champion Jean-Eric Vergne, Formula E drivers Sam Bird, Lucas di Grassi and André Lotterer."   https://variety.com/2019/film/markets-festivals/leonardo-dicaprio-electric-car-documentary-and-we-go-green-1203218683/   IRISH ELECTRIFI SIGNS €40M DEAL TO BUILD ELECTRIC JAGUAR E-TYPES Electrifi, the Wicklow-based company that made quite a splash last month by revealing it had converted a classic Ferrari 308 to electric power, has announced a deal to build a series of electric Jaguar E-Types." reports Irish Times: "The cars will keep their original structure, but the 3.8 and 4.2-litre ‘XK’ straight-six engine, and its four-speed Moss gearbox, will be removed. The battery pack and electric motor slot into the space vacated by the old oily bits, so in theory it will be simple to restore the car to petrol power if you ever want to bring it back to its original status. Power is expected to be in the 450hp range, giving the car the ability to sprint to 100km/h in around four seconds, and on to a top speed north of 280km/h. No figure for one-charge range has yet been given." "Jaguar itself, which has its own battery E-Type plans. The electric E-Type, or E-Type Zero to give it its proper name, has already made a name for itself, thanks to a cameo role in the most recent royal wedding."   https://www.irishtimes.com/life-and-style/motors/irish-electrifi-signs-40m-deal-to-build-electric-jaguar-e-types-1.3898795   LAND ROVER TESTING HYBRID 2020 DEFENDER "Jaguar Land Rover is testing a hybrid-electric version of its upcoming 2020 Defender SUV. Spy photographers caught a prototype on public roads outside of the company’s research and development center in Gaydon, England. A look into the vehicle’s registration records confirmed it uses a hybrid powertrain." according to Trucks.com: "Land Rover will debut its reborn Defender later this year. After a 22-year hiatus the SUV will be available in the U.S. market as a modernized successor to the rugged original. Among the possible changes is adoption of alternative powertrains such as a hybrid-electric unit. Jaguar Land Rover offers a mild-hybrid Evoque, plug-in hybrid versions of the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport and the all-electric Jaguar I-Pace. The electrified Defender could use a hybrid powertrain that regenerates from braking rather than an external charging station."   https://www.trucks.com/2019/05/20/spy-shots-land-rover-testing-hybrid-2020-defender/   FORD AXES 10PC OF WORKFORCE AS IT RESTRUCTURES FOR ELECTRIC CARS "Ford Motor Co. F, -0.39% is planning to eliminate 7,000 salaried jobs around the world by the end of August as part of its Smart Redesign program, according to an email sent to employees that was published by Automotive News." says Market Watch. Whilst The Guardian says: "The cuts are expected to save Ford $600m (£471m) a year, helping it improve its profit margins, as carmakers manage weak global demand and ready themselves for a period of upheaval caused by a shift to electric vehicles."   https://www.marketwatch.com/story/ford-to-eliminate-7000-jobs-or-10-of-workforce-by-end-august-2019-05-20   https://www.theguardian.com/business/2019/may/20/ford-motor-company-cut-7000-jobs-500-uk   BHP RECHARGES ITS ELECTRIC VEHICLE TAKE-UP FORECASTS "BHP has lifted its forecasts for the adoption of electric vehicles around the world, a phenomenon that will have substantial ramifications for the world's biggest miner. It now estimates at least 132 million EVs will be on the world's roads in 2035, and at least 561 million in the middle of the century. These numbers are its "low-case" forecasts, and it also suggested take-up could be higher." says Sydney Morning Herald: "The miner is watching the developing EV market closely, given its activities around the world. It has significant copper and nickel operations - two commodities that are essential to EV batteries. It also has significant oil operations and has said it sees continued demand for the commodity. The company signalled its optimism in the growth of EVs last week, when it confirmed it would retain its Nickel West business, with chief executive Andrew Mackenzie citing the potential growth in the business due to "the expected growth in battery markets"."   https://www.smh.com.au/business/companies/bhp-recharges-its-electric-vehicle-take-up-forecasts-20190521-p51pix.html   HOW DOES A 2012 TESLA MODEL S STACK UP AGAINST A 2019 AUDI E-TRON? "Should you skip these newfangled EVs and get a used Tesla instead?" is the question asked by InsideEVs today: "the e-tron is the culmination of over four years of development, and represents one of the most expensive projects in the automaker’s history. Nonetheless, its battery specs don’t rival those of the cars coming out of Fremont. In absolute terms, the brand-new e-tron’s range is just below that of the oldest Model S. When you look at miles of range per kWh of battery size, the comparison is even more lopsided. In 2012, the EPA range for the Model S with a 60 kWh battery pack was 208 miles. The 2019 e-tron delivers 204 miles with a 95 kWh (83.6 kWh useable) pack. A seven-year-old Model S with a battery pack of similar size (85 kWh) offers a range of 265 miles. Meanwhile, Model X gets 250 miles from a 75 kWh battery pack, and the Model 3 Standard Range Plus gets 240 miles from a 55 kWh pack."   https://insideevs.com/reviews/350645/2012-tesla-model-s-vs-audi-etron/   NEXT-GEN BMW I8 COULD GO FULLY ELECTRIC "The BMW i8 is a stylish, futuristic-looking plug-in hybrid, but a new report is suggesting the second-generation model could go fully electric. While the current car has a turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder internal combustion engine, an electric motor and an 11.6 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, Autocar reports that BMW executives are leaning towards making the its successor an all-electric." according to CarScoops: "sources told the publication the switch to an electric powertrain would provide a “tangible link” to the company’s effort in Formula E. This is understandable and it would likely help to serve as a halo model for the company’s upcoming slate of electric vehicles."   https://www.carscoops.com/2019/05/next-gen-bmw-i8-could-go-fully-electric-challenge-tesla-roadster   BMW UPDATES ITS PLUG-IN HYBRID LINEUP: MORE ELECTRIC RANGE "BMW announced a major refresh of its lineup, including plug-in hybrid versions of several models, scheduled for summer 2019. In effect, all PHEVs will be equipped with new, higher energy dense batteries for longer all-electric range, among other improvements." reports InsideEVs: "The upgraded versions of the BMW PHEVs come just in time to not harm severely the plug-in sales results, which didn't bring any growth for the past few months. The list of updated plug-ins (production form July/August 2019) includes: BMW 330e iPerformance BMW 530e iPerformance BMW 530e xDrive iPerformance BMW X5 xDrive45e iPerformance BMW 225xe Active Tourer iPerformance BMW 745e iPerformance (in three versions: BMW 745e, BMW 745Le, BMW 745Le xDrive) is already in production"   https://insideevs.com/news/350511/bmw-updates-plugin-hybrid-lineup-summer/   FIRST ALL-ELECTRIC MINICABS TO HIT LONDON IN FIGHT FOR CLEANER AIR "Addison Lee has unveiled the capital’s first all-electric minicab in a boost for efforts to tackle toxic fumes. The firm is to trial the £70,000 Audi e-tron for six months to assess the practicality of a vehicle that has a 250-mile range before needing to be recharged." says Evening Standard newspaper: "Addison Lee will test five electric Audis on its premium Tristar chauffeur service as part of its commitment to moving towards a fleet with zero-emissions capability."   https://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/first-allelectric-minicabs-to-hit-london-in-fight-for-cleaner-air-a4147536.html   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Annual Revenue was $21.5 billion Profit - $345 million non-GAAP No ZEV credits sold to speak of, could be saving them up as a buffer. $910 million free cash flow on the quarter. They have $3.7 billion in unrestricted cash. Elon mentioned several times about stock being on ships being his concern, and getting them with customers in Europe and China. Tesla growing at 60% a year, from 2 billion revenue 5 years ago to 21 billion revenue in 2018. 360-400k vehicles forecast to be sold in 2019. All Model 3's being made at Fremont are currently for Europe and China. Gigafactory 3 Model 3's complete vehicle production line, so that stamping, paint shop. 1GWH of storage installed in 2018. 100 powerpacks in 32 countries. Pickup on track to be unveiled this Summer. Eurpopean and China orders are strong and they're not trying. Leasing will come but not yet. As for $35k Model 3 the letter say: " A new manufacturing line made by Tesla Grohmann is further increasing production of Powerwall and Powerpack modules at Gigafactory 1."   TESLA MODEL 3 PRODUCTION TO START IN CHINA BY END OF YEAR "Tesla has said in its fourth quarter report that the local production of Model 3 in China should begin by the end of 2019" reports Mark at InsideEVs.com: "The Tesla Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai will produce (probably in 2020) some 3,000 Model 3 per week. Those will be only base versions of the Model 3, as the top versions (all-wheel drive and Performance) will be supplied to China from the U.S.. The rate of production of Model 3 in Fremont is to be 7,000 per week later in 2019, which together with 3,000 per month in China, should enable Tesla to crank 10,000 per week." And the Tesla letter said that was the plan by the end of this year. That's an annual worldwide rate of 500,000 Model 3s. I will add - there is nothing on that site apart from a fence.   https://insideevs.com/tesla-model-3-production-china/   TESLA IS ADDRESSING ITS REPAIR SERVICE CHALLENGES "Tesla stated that it is currently operating 378 service centers around the world by the end of the fourth quarter, with 300 of the sites being located outside of CA. Augmenting this support system is a fleet of 411 mobile service vehicles." reports Simon Alvarez for Taslarati. Elon said: "“We’re also improving parts distribution. I think we made a strategic error in the past about not having service parts located at our distribution centers. We had them in parts distribution warehouses which basically meant it was impossible to have a fast turnaround on service on your car because the car would come in, then the parts would be requested (before) they come to the service center. Basically, for even for a very simple repair, it could take days. We’re going to move to stocking all common parts at the service centers, so it’s possible to get your car service in 20 or possibly 15 minutes. Lightning fast. It’s also gonna make sense for our service centers to do basic bodywork or essentially if all you need to do is replace a front or rear feature, it makes sense to pre-stock the front-rear feature in the common colors. So unless you have (an) unusual color, we can literally replace your feature in 15-20 minutes, and there’s none of this like weeks at a body shop stuff.”   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-repair-service-rangers-double-capacity-parts-distribution-2019/   TESLA TO BEGIN MODEL Y TOOLING THIS YEAR Staying with Teslarati with news about the Model Y: "Tooling for the vehicle will begin this year and pave the way for volume production expected in 2020. Despite prior comments from CEO Elon Musk hinting that the site of production of the company’s upcoming vehicle might be Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai, Tesla indicates in its 2018 Full Year report that Gigafactory 1 in Sparks, Nevada will likely be the site for first Model Y volume production." "Since Model Y will use the lessons learned with Model 3 production at the start, Tesla predicts a smoother path to market for the vehicle. One of the variables in favor of that prediction is the fact that Model Y will share about 75% of the components of the Model 3, lowering CapEx for a new production line as compared to Model 3’s line in Fremont. The efficiency enabled by the similarities is further anticipated to quicken the speed of the production ramp."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-y-production-gigafactory-1-2020/   VW REVIVING THE CLASSIC BEACH BUGGY AS AN ELECTRIC CONCEPT VW is reviving the classic Californian 1960's Beach Buggy. Motor1.com has the details: "Volkswagen just dropped a pair of teaser photos for a new dune buggy concept, based not on the outgoing Beetle but the company’s Modular Electric Drive Matrix (MEB) platform. Yes, the classic rear-engined beach buggy is now reimagined as an all-electric dune hopper, and though the teaser photos don’t reveal all the details, we can see that the core elements appear to be present." says Christopher Smith: "We do know that Volkswagen’s primary mission with this retro reboot isn’t so much about tapping into a nostalgic vibe, but showcasing the versatility of its MEB chassis. There’s certainly something to be said for the compact nature of an electric system – there’s no need to route exhaust systems, fuel lines, or make room for bulky driveline components that could change from vehicle to vehicle. "   https://www.motor1.com/news/303291/vw-reviving-classic-beach-buggy/   2019 KIA NIRO EV FIRST DRIVE: THE NEW AFFORDABLE LONG-RANGE LEADER InsideEVs got the chance to play in the Kia eNiro: "After a full day of driving the 2019 Kia Niro EV through California’s Monterey Bay region, the all-electric crossover’s real-world range appears to be about 250 miles. The Niro EV’s official E.P.A. range is 239 miles, but 260 miles was indicated on the dash as we left the hipster Hotel Paradox in Santa Cruz." according to Bradley for InsideEVs: "Depending on the road’s incline and other factors, Level 3 regen can bring the car to a complete stop after a long coast. But for a useful, no-pedal stop – similar to the BMW i3 or the Chevy Bolt in L – you also need to pull and hold the left paddle. Kia’s Garrett Ono, manager of product strategy and regulatory compliance, called it a “hold to stop” function. The Niro EV uses a 200-horsepower motor mounted to the front axle. Given its extra size, the Niro EV is not as fast off the line as the Bolt or Kona. Even when punching the Niro EV’s accelerator, you are not tossed back in your seat. The launch starts modestly until it reaches about 15 miles per hour"   https://insideevs.com/2019-kia-niro-ev-first-drive/   EXTREME E SERIES UNVEILS EVENT FORMAT, 2021 LAUNCH DATE "The nature of the Extreme E electric off-road SUV racing series has been unveiled by co-founders Gil de Ferran and Alejandro Agag - and it is set to begin in January 2021." reports Alex for motorsport.com "The championship, which is operated in association with ABB FIA Formula E, hosted a launch event on the river Thames in central London, on board the Royal Mail Ship St Helena. XE will hold electric SUV racing events in five remote areas of the world – the Arctic, the Himalayas, the Sahara desert, the Amazon rainforest and islands in the Indian Ocean. Motorsport.com has previously reported that XE entrants will use the same spec-chassis base underneath bespoke silhouette SUV racing designs, with limited powertrain areas available for development. The event format will be a series of head-to-heads over stages approximately five miles long, with a round-robin group stage leading to a knockout tournament to decide the event winner. British explorer and environmentalist David de Rothschild will be XE’s chief explorer. An XE statement described the series as a “fully-funded venture”, which is already backed by founding partner Continental Tyres, and niobium supplier CBMM."   https://www.motorsport.com/offroad/news/extreme-e-format-launch-date/4331106/   SHELL ACQUIRES EV CHARGING COMPANY GREENLOTS Greenlots, a US-based leader in EV charging and energy management software and solutions, has signed an agreement to become a wholly owned subsidiary of Shell New Energies US LLC, a subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell plc. With this deal, Greenlots’ technology and team become the foundation for Shell’s continued expansion of electric mobility solutions in North America. Together, the companies will offer best in class software and services that enable large-scale deployment of smart charging infrastructure and integrate efficiently with advanced energy resources like solar, wind and power storage.     COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Wednesday 18th April 2018. TESLA PAUSES PRODUCTION FOR UPGRADES A shutdown of the Tesla Model 3 production line seems to have caught everyone by surprise, including those working at Tesla! However the secrecy is totally understandable given how much is at stake and how so many publications want to bash the brand. Saying that, I’m not sure too many people like being told you have to take the next week off work, out of our annual holiday allowance! Tesla “says the shutdown is intended to resolve some of the problems that have contributed to the numerous delays in getting the cars to hundreds of thousands of reservation holders” according to The Verge. “Our Model 3 production plan includes periods of planned downtime in both Fremont and Gigafactory 1,” a Tesla spokesperson told The Verge. “These periods are used to improve automation and systematically address bottlenecks in order to increase production rates. This is not unusual and is in fact common in production ramps like this.” Model S and X production will continue unaffected. CHINA LOWERS THEIR WALL Up until now there were only two options for foreign carmakers to get into the lucrative, and frankly enormous, EV market in China. Either pay a 25% Import tax on ever car you import into the country or partner up in a Joint Venture with a domestic company at least 50/50 ownership. The aim of that was to bring knowledge into China. Last week on the podcast we talked about new rules coming in allowing foreign owners more flexibility in China and now we have more details Quartz points out: “the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), announced that that the country will scrap foreign investment limits for car manufacturing, beginning with new energy vehicles this year, a category that includes both hybrid and fully battery-run vehicles. One immediate beneficiary of the rule change might be a company that’s been trying to set up a manufacturing hub in China for several months now—and is already quite popular there despite the hefty duty its cars attract. While the timeline from the NDRC doesn’t mention Tesla, and any foreign electric vehicle maker can potentially benefit, the announcement comes after Tesla has several times in recent months expressed its interest in manufacturing in China, the company’s second-largest revenue generator.” The country will scrap the limits on firms making fully electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in 2018, commercial vehicle firms in 2020 and lift restrictions on the wider passenger vehicle market by 2022 Shares of German car makers all gained on the news, reversing earlier losses. China accounts for about half of Volkswagen’s (VW’s) namesake brand sales, while the world’s biggest car market is also the most significant buyer of luxury Mercedes, VW’s Audi unit and BMW vehicles. VW rose as much as 1.2%, and BMW and Mercedes-maker Daimler rose about 0.5%. USA VS CHINA The difference in preference between US and Chinese buyers is also interesting. Not only does China buy a lot more EVs but they prefer ppure BEVs. 555,300 plug-in vehicles were sold in China last year vs. US sales of just under 195,591, according to the US Department of Energy (DOE) yesterday. China saw an 81% share of put BEVs whereas in the US BEVs accounted for just over half (53%). PORSCHE TO HAVE 500 800-VOLT RAPID CHARGERS We heard the news recently that Porsche will be installing their 800-volt ultra rapid chargers at 189 dealerships in North America, and now CNET reports they’re going further. By the end of next year, the VW-owned company wants 500 od them forming a countrywide network. For comparison Tesla’s Supercharging network is 1,2000 stations, whilst Porsche will win on speed giving you 250 miles of range in under 20 mins. The partners are likely to be EVgo, Chargepoint and Electrify America, which makes sense, as that last one is where money from the VW dieselgate settlement is being spent. As for the ones at the dealers, they’ll be footing the cost for those and each one is over six figures, plus they’ll need a battery buffer to both even out the load and potentially avoid upgrading the grid connection. The network isn’t going to be limited to fast chargers, either. The automaker is also considering more traditional chargers at various points of interest, including hotels and golf courses. 10,000 EVS FOR OLA Indian ride-hailing firm Ola, backed by Japan’s SoftBank Group will launch 10,000 electric three-wheelers in the country over the next 12 months as part of a broader electrification plan, the company said in a statement on Monday. “Mission: Electric”, with a commitment to place 10,000 E-rickshaws and Electric auto-rickshaws in its service in the next 12 months. The company will develop “Mission: Electric” as a platform to bring one million electric vehicles on the road by 2021. But the series and the FIA were keen to retain an element of strategy and the mandatory use of two power levels during FE races was confirmed by the governing body’s World Motor Sport Council.” I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested.
