Just like the EQA, which is the EV version of the GLA, the EQB is the pure-electric version of the GLB. And the difference between the two ICE models is the same for the EVs - the EQB is the slightly bigger and more rugged looking of the two, and the only to offer a third row of seats. - the EQB is only available with two motors, in either EQB 300 or EQB 350 guises. They both draw from the same 66.5 kWh battery pack (shared with the EQA), they have the same maximum charging speed of 110 kW - WLTP range of up to 419 km (260 miles). - The EQB is expected to reach US dealers in 2022, but in Europe it should become available before the end of 2021. Now, with the automotive landscape shifting away from gas-powered cars, the G-class is spawning the all-electric EQG. - The EQG will be an all-new model for the Mercedes brand when it launches. We expect it to arrive for the 2024 model year, meaning it could go on sale in late 2023. - We estimate that the price of the 2024 Mercedes EQG will be in the $120,000-range when it reaches dealerships. We'll know more about the different EQG trims and their pricing closer to the electric off-roader's on-sale date. - The EQG is expected to be powered by four electric motors, one near each wheel, that will be individually controllable, which should improve on- and off-road driving performance. The small crossover shares the MEB platform and battery with the ID.3, and VW plans to launch it in Europe (not the US) by 2025. - The ID.Life is powered by a 231-horsepower motor and 57.0-kWh battery pack that's considerably larger than the 35-kWh battery on the Honda E city car. Like the rear-wheel-drive ID.3, also available only in Europe, it should go around 250 miles on a charge via Europe's generous WLTP cycle. JEROME GUILLEN LEAVES TESLA"Tesla is losing one of its most important executives; Jerome Guillen. Guillen held high-ranking positions at Tesla for more than ten years, but has now left the company, as Tesla announced in a brief notification to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)." says electrive.com: " Jerome Guillen was only appointed head of the new Tesla Heavy Trucking division in March, where he was to drive the market launch of the electric truck Semi, and was previously head of Tesla's entire automotive division. The Frenchman has long been considered one of Elon Musk's most important companions. He came to Tesla from Daimler in 2010 and was responsible for the Model S. In his ten years at Tesla, Musk repeatedly gave Guillen responsibility for the major construction sites in the company." https://www.electrive.com/2021/06/08/jerome-guillen-leaves-tesla/ TESLA'S CHINA-MADE VEHICLE SALES SURGE 29% IN MAY"Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) sold 33,463 China-made electric cars in May, including exports, a 29% jump from April, according to data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) on Tuesday." says Reuters: "China's new electric vehicle sales surged 177% to 185,000 cars in May from a year earlier, CPCA said. Overall passenger vehicle sales, however, rose just 1.1% to 1.66 million cars. Tesla, which makes its Model 3 sedans and Model Y sport-utility vehicles in Shanghai, exported 11,527 China-made vehicles in May. In April, it sold 25,845 China-made cars, down from 35,478 in March." https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/teslas-china-made-vehicle-sales-surge-29-may-auto-association-2021-06-08/ AUSTRALIA'S LARGEST-EVER TESLA SHIPMENT"The largest-ever Australian shipment of Tesla electric cars arrived late last week in Port Kembla, NSW, according to well-informed boat tracking service VedaPrime. It's estimated the delivery comprised roughly 1500 examples of the Chinese-built Model 3 sedan, which remains the only variant from Tesla currently on offer Down Under." says caradvice.com.au: "While Tesla does not release its sales data, figures obtained by CarAdvice show the all-electric brand delivered 3430 vehicles to local customers throughout 2020. Based on those results, the most recent shipment equates to almost six-months worth of stock – more than the US-based brand has ever had to deal with in Australia" https://www.caradvice.com.au/958695/australias-largest-ever-tesla-shipment-arrives-in-port-kembla-nsw/ TESLA SEEKS TO BUILD BATTERY FACTORY NEAR BERLIN"US carmaker Tesla has expanded its application for construction permits to build more facilities in Grünheide — south of Berlin — notably a battery factory. In April, Tesla said it wanted to include a battery production facility in its permit application." according to dw.com: "Given the scope of the changes, the state of Brandenburg's ministry of agriculture, environment and climate (MLUK) must decide in the next few days "whether to involve the public again," the licensing authority said in a statement on Thursday. Following criticism from environmental groups, Tesla also wants to introduce various measures to reduce water consumption so that despite expansion of the plant, water consumption is still expected to be about 1.4 million cubic meters per year." https://www.dw.com/en/germany-tesla-seeks-to-build-battery-factory-near-berlin/a-57775358 MAXUS TO SUPPLY 750 ELECTRIC VANS TO DPD UK"DPD UK will double its fleet of electric vehicles (EVs) after ordering 750 fully electric commercial vehicles from Maxus. The parcel delivery firm has bought 500 E Deliver 9s and 250 E Deliver 3s, increasing its pure electric fleet to almost 1,500 vehicles." says CommercialFleet.org: "Maxus began taking orders for the E Deliver 3, its first compact electric van, last year. Two battery options are available: 35kWH and 52.5kWh, giving a range of up to 98 miles and 150 miles, respectively. Meanwhile, the E Deliver 9, which replaced the EV80, has a maximum range of 219 miles and can be specified with one of three battery options. There's a choice of 55.1kWh, 72kWh and 88.5kWh." https://www.commercialfleet.org/news/van-news/2021/06/09/maxus-to-supply-750-electric-vans-to-dpd-uk ELECTRIC TRUCK START-UP LORDSTOWN DOESN'T HAVE CASH TO BEGIN PRODUCTION"Lordstown Motors, an electric vehicle start-up that aimed to revive a shuttered General Motors factory in Ohio, said on Tuesday that it did not have enough cash to start commercial production of its electric pickup truck and might have to close its doors." reports The Times: "The company, which was once held up as a savior by former President Donald J. Trump, is now being investigated by the Securities and Exchange Commission. In a regulatory filing, Lordstown said it will not be able to begin “commercial scale production” without raising more money from investors and lenders. Lordstown, one of about a dozen start-ups in the electric vehicle space that have gone public by merging with special purpose acquisition companies, or SPACs, added that there was “substantial doubt regarding our ability to continue as a going concern” — a legal phrase companies often use to alert investors that they might not survive" https://www.nytimes.com/2021/06/08/business/lordstown-cash-going-concern.html E.ON AIMS TO INCREASE AFFORDABILITY WITH EV SALARY SACRIFICE SCHEME"E.ON has launched an electric vehicle (EV) salary sacrifice scheme following its company car provision going all electric in 2019. This new scheme – created by E.ON and Lex Autolease - enables non-company car drivers to access an EV, offering a range of EVs as well as an option to purchase a home chargepoint through its e-mobility business unit, E.ON Drive, as an additional salary sacrifice benefit." says Current News: "The scheme allows employees to benefit from reduced Income Tax and National Insurance contributions, with this designed to make EVs more affordable. It follows Octopus announcing earlier this year it was offering 100% electric salary sacrifice schemes through a new business unit dubbed Electric Dreams." https://www.current-news.co.uk/news/e-on-aims-to-increase-affordability-with-ev-salary-sacrifice-scheme RENAULT MEGANE E-TECH ELECTRIC"The radical Mégane eVision concept is destined for series production in 2022 as the Mégane E-Tech Electric - Renault's second mainstream EV." sreports Autocar: "The production-ready car has now been revealed in camouflaged prototype guise ahead of a full public debut later this year. The model shown is the first of 30 identically liveried test cars that will be used for advanced development trials on public roads beginning this summer. Proportions are largely shared with Alliance partner Nissan's new Ariya SUV, with which the Mégane shares its CMF-EV platform and powertrain. Renault has confirmed that, like the concept, the Peugeot e-2008 rival has a 215bhp electric motor on its front axle and takes its power from a 60kWh underfloor battery pack good for 280 miles of range on the official WLTP test cycle." https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/new-2022-renault-megane-e-tech-electric-280-mile-ev NISSAN SAYS OWNERS OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES TRAVEL 390 MILES MORE "Nissan claims electric car owners across Europe are already covering more miles annually than those driving petrol and diesel cars, despite continued concerns about range anxiety. The average electric vehicle user travels 391 miles (630 kilometres) more each year than those with cars with combustion engines, according to the Japanese car maker's research." according to thisismoney: " A poll of 7,000 motorists in the UK, France, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Norway, Sweden and Denmark earlier this year asked car drivers to detail how many miles they cover each year - not including 2020. When drivers of petrol and diesel cars were asked what would convince them to switch to an EV, 38 per cent said the biggest 'pull-factor' would be longer ranges. Almost a third (32 per cent) said easier charging would persuade them to make the leap, while three in 10 said they would need to see an improved availability of public devices before ditching their traditional motors." https://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/cars/article-9659615/Electric-car-owners-390-miles-year-petrol-diesel.html THE URBAN, LOW-SPEED EV IS HAVING A MOMENT"In China, a 10-foot-long minicar called the Wuling Hongguang Mini — made by General Motors and Chinese automakers SAIC and Guangxi Automobile — is topping 250,000 in total sales. That makes it the best-selling EV in the country, outperforming Tesla's Model 3 and others." says greenboz.com: "Young families are buying the car because at around $5,000 it's cheap, it's easy to drive, park and charge, and it's fun to personalize with a Crayola box of color options and stickers from the likes of Pokemon and Hello Kitty. The car is reportedly ubiquitous in the Chinese city of Liuzhou, which has chargers all over the place; the city offers free parking and charging to support the growing EV market. Along with China, European cities historically have been eager to support pint-sized vehicles for urban living. But major European automakers aren't yet embracing the ultra-cheap EVs being sold in China. TESLA DEVELOPING PLATFORM TO SHARE DRIVING DATA WITH CAR OWNERS: REPORT - GLOBAL TIMES - Tesla is developing a platform that would provide access for its users to view driving data, which would make Tesla the first company to share such data with users, according to a report by Beijing Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. HYUNDAI IONIQ 5 BREAKS COVER IN OFFICIAL SHOTS When we saw the retro inspired and very beautiful Hyundai Concept 45 there was little chance it would enter production. I mean, shag pile carpets and sliding barn door? But the reality, what's now called the Ioniq 5, isn't far off. The interior might not be the living room concept which resembles a plush lounge, but at least the exterior styling has kept much of the standout features of the concept car. "The new car, described by the brand as a “fundamental shift in BEV design approach”, will be fully revealed next month. It is the first production model to sit atop Hyundai and Kia’s new modular electric platform (E-GMP)." says Autocar: "New design elements include ‘Parametric Pixels’ (tiny pixel-style lighting elements that adorn the front of the car), a clamshell bonnet and 20in aero-optimised wheels. Technology found in the Ioniq 5 will include a Vehicle to Load (V2L) system offering a 3.5kW, 110/220v power supply via bidirectional charging - enough, Hyundai claims, to roast a turkey in a large oven. Ultra-fast charging promises to replenish up to 62 miles of range in as little as five minutes, too." Or 80% in 18minutes. The range is said to be just over 300 miles on WLTP. So although Hyundai won't talk battery sizes, say the efficiency was on average 4MpkWH (i could well be more), then 300 miles would need a 75kWh battery. And doing the math of the 80% charge in 18 minutes which they've told us, that would be able to get 60kWh of juice in that time. That would be 200kWh charging during that time. Which is incredibly fast, given the ramp down in speed you would expect after the battery is over half full, let alone 80%. But what about the claim of 62 miles (100km) in 5 mins? That would be a peak rate of 744 miles per hour. Or a peak rate of 248kW. it's an 800 volt architecture like the Taycan, which peaks at 270kW. Next up, a low slung sports sedan called the 6, and an SUV scheduled for 2024. E-GMP also accommodates a wide range of vehicle types, driving distances, and lifestyles through a standardized battery system equipped with technology optimized for EVs. E-GMP embraces unique EV design characteristics such as short overhangs and a long wheelbase collision safety, maximized passenger space, and battery safety. The space-consuming AC system has been moved from inside the car to the extra space created by replacing the engine with an electric motor leaving more room for passengers in the front. The 3 pin plug sockets will be up front, and under the back seat in the middle. Opposite where the rear USB ports would be on many cars, the rear of the armrest area. So you can get to the power from outside and inside. We anticipate the launch in February for a late 2021 on sale date. https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/hyundai-previews-new-ioniq-5-ev-ahead-february-unveiling CADILLAC CELESTIQ EV WILL OFFER 4-WHEEL STEERING "When it comes to the Cadillac Celestiq flagship EV, four seems to be the magic number. For the 2021 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Cadillac confirmed some details of the upcoming electric sedan, including all-wheel drive, four-wheel steering, and a four-quadrant glass roof." says Green Car Reports "The roof is made from suspended-particle-device smart glass, allowing each of the four occupants (the Celestiq won't have a middle rear seat) to set the level of transparency for their quadrant, a Cadillac press release said. Cadillac also said the Celestiq will have a "pillar-to-pillar freeform display" for the driver and front passenger, with individual screens for both passengers. Additional screen between the seats in the first and second rows "will separate individualized comfort settings from entertainment displays," the automaker said, implying that these screens will be used for controlling different features. The Celestiq is one of numerous electric cars based on General Motors' Ultium modular battery architecture and BEV3 platform. It's expected to have a fastback shape, and will be hand-assembled in Detroit. The same basic platform will be used for the Cadillac Lyriq electric SUV, which is expected to arrive before the Celestiq, in 2022" The full width display is taking on the Mercedes-Benz MBUX Hyperscreen system. And the Ultium battery packs will be made up to 200kWh for some models so the range should be impressive. https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1130910_flagship-cadillac-celestiq-ev-will-offer-4-wheel-steering-4-quadrant-smart-glass-roof KIA ELECTRIC CROSSOVER SPIED STILL WEARING THICK CAMOUFLAGE Kia is working on it's own full electric car from the ground up, and it has been seen again in lots of camo. "Kia is keeping the car under super-tight warps – it continues to wear thick cladding and camouflage. It only recently lost the swirly wrap underneath, though the bare metal isn't much to look at. The coverings cover the front and rear fascias, the rear hatch, and the doors, leaving a lot to one's imagination. The hatch design is further distorted with extra cladding." says Motor1.com: "The new EV will ride on Hyundai's Electric-Global Modular Platform . Horsepower and performance specs remain elusive, though expect it to be geared toward efficiency and not outright oomph." https://www.motor1.com/news/465783/new-kia-electric-crossover-spied/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-news FOXCONN TEAMS UP WITH CHINESE AUTOMAKER GEELY "Foxconn and Chinese carmaker Geely have created a joint venture aimed at selling manufacturing and services to the global auto industry. The deal which was announced on Wednesday, marks Foxconn's continued expansion into the auto sector and reflects Geely's desire to partner with technology companies. Foxconn and Geely will provide car production, consulting, intelligent driving systems and other services to global automotive enterprises, the two companies said." writes CNBC: "Taiwanese firm Foxconn is best known as the company that assembles Apple's iPhones. Last year, it launched a platform to help automobile companies make electric cars. And this month, Foxconn signed a deal with Chinese electric carmaker Byton to help produce its first vehicle." https://www.cnbc.com/2021/01/13/foxconn-teams-up-with-chinas-geely-to-build-cars-for-other-automakers.html HITACHI CAPITAL INVESTS ANOTHER £10M IN GRIDSERVE "Hitachi Capital announced a £10m investment in Gridserve’s parent company, Gridserve Sustainable Energy Ltd. The firms say this is to strengthen their partnership following the successful launch of the UK’s first ultra-fast Electric Forecourt." accoring to electrive; "It is also not the first investment of Hitachi’s funding arm. The company has funded over £24m in Gridserve projects throughout 2020, including funding to help deliver the completion of the Braintree Electric Forecourt. The site is the first of over 100 large charging parks that Gridserve wants to install over the next five years. Robert Gordon, CEO of Hitachi Capital (UK) PLC, added they wanted “to become a market leader for EV adoption”. They are making a drag racer out of a Honda E and a hillclimb competitor from an N-One. Big Red is teasing its reveal on yet another microsite in advance of the virtual Tokyo Auto Salon 2021." says Jalopnik: "a performance version of the Model E is what enthusiasts have been clamoring for. Honda claims on its microsite that both the Model E and N-One will compete on actual racing circuits come March" https://jalopnik.com/hondas-ev-racing-builds-to-break-cover-at-tokyo-auto-sa-1846044452 QUESTION OF THE WEEK What your favourite charging network, and why? Independent testing confirmed that a Lucid Air, which enters production later this year, traveled 517 miles (832km) on a single charge. At the time, however, we didn't know the battery capacity of that test vehicle, since Lucid has previously stated that the Air would be available with packs varying from 60kWh to 120kWh. On Wednesday morning, we got our answer: 113kWh." writes Ars Technica: "517 miles from 113kWh is 4.57 miles/kWh (13.6kWh/100km), which is still extremely efficient by EV standards and would equate to up to 274 miles (440km) of range for an Air with a 60kWh pack. Previously, Lucid has said it is planning 60kWh, 100kWh, and 120kWh packs for the Air. If those numbers are total kWh as opposed to useable kWh, then a 60kWh Air would probably have a usable 56.5kWh, which should equate to 258 miles/415km." Lucid CEO and CTO Peter Rawlinson: "It's relatively easy to achieve more range by adding progressively more batteries, but gaining 'dumb range' that way increases weight and cost, and reduces interior space. Lucid Air has achieved its remarkable range whilst also reducing battery size through its in-house technology, resulting in a breakthrough in overall vehicle-level efficiency." https://arstechnica.com/cars/2020/08/that-517-mile-range-lucid-air-will-use-a-113kwh-battery-pack/?comments=1 VW TAKING $100 DEPOSITS FOR 2021 ELECTRIC ID.4 "American buyers will be able to take delivery of an ID.4 by the end of the year. For those that want to make sure to get VW's electric crossover, the automaker will open up reservations in September." according to Car & Driver: "When the online reservation system goes live, customers can configure and reserve their ID.4 with a $100 refundable deposit. They'll then be able to track their vehicle's status via the My VW portal. An additional $400 deposit is required when the configuration of your vehicle is sent to the dealership of your choice. Even after that, the entire $500 deposit is still refundable all the way until the potential customer buys the ID.4. " https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a33822902/2021-vw-id4-deposits/ CHINESE EV MAKER XPENG SHARES JUMP 54% IN NYSE DEBUT "Chinese electric vehicle maker Xpeng Inc’s shares jumped 54% in their debut on the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday, after raising $1.5 billion in its upsized initial public offering." according to Reuters: "Shares of Xpeng, which counts Chinese e-commerce titan Alibaba and Xiaomi Corp among its backers, opened at $23.10 per American Depositary Share (ADS), up from the raised offer price of $15 per ADS." https://uk.reuters.com/article/us-xpeng-ipo/chinese-ev-maker-xpeng-shares-jump-54-in-nyse-debut-idUKKBN25N2LP CASTROL RELEASES STUDY TRYING TO FIND THE TIPPING POINTOR EV ADOPTION "To try and find what the public's tipping point will be for EV adoption, Castrol (of all companies) decided to bankroll a study. The resulting 50-page document requires a bit of commitment to get through, but what you're likely interested in are the headline figures, the study's methodology and Castrol's motives." says CNET: "The bulk of the data comes from 9,000 vehicle owners from eight countries. the three significant milestones to hit -- according to the study -- include a range of 291 miles, a charging time of 31 minutes and an average purchase price of approximately $36,000. The truth is that all three of those are available right now from several manufacturers, but the catch is that we're still in a situation where you can't have all three in one car. For example, the Tesla Model S will do over 291 miles, but it costs a hell of a lot more than $36,000. Plenty of EVs will fast charge in around 30 minutes (at least to 80%), even ones that cost under $36,000, but they won't get close to 291 miles of range." https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/castrol-study-ev-tipping-point-global/#ftag=CAD-09-10aai5b BYTON TO RESUME OPERATIONS IN SEPTEMBER "There is news about the electric car start-up Byton, which has been temporarily suspended since 01 July. Chinese media now report, citing insiders, that the company is ready to resume full operations in September 2020." says electrive.com: "At the end of June, it looked as if Byton would not be able to cope with the consequences of the pandemic. Spokesman Dave Buchko announced a six-month break starting 1 July and the dismissal of almost all employees worldwide. A comeback seemed unlikely at this point – as reported. Autonews Gasgoo now reports in the aftermath of the plant closure that only 100 employees remain at the headquarters in Nanjing and that the offices in North America and Germany had to file for bankruptcy." https://www.electrive.com/2020/08/26/byton-to-resume-operations-in-september/ 552 HP PORSCHE PANAMERA 4S E-HYBRID INTRODUCED "Porsche has revealed a refreshed version of its second generation Panamera which comes with subtle styling changes, a new top of the range Turbo S model and a new 4S E-Hybrid PHEV. The latter is a new model in the Panamera lineup and it is meant to replace the 550 horsepower Panamera Turbo which will no longer be available." reports InsideEVs: "Power for the 4S E-Hybrid comes from a 2.9-liter V6 engine with twin-turbos, aided by an electric motor that makes 552 horsepower. Nought to sixty in 3.5 seconds and tops out at 300 km/h (186 mph). With this kind of power figure, it is actually quicker than the former Turbo model and with a larger battery pack than before, it also provides more pure-electric range than previous Panamera PHEVs. Porsche says it’s increased the size of the battery from 14.1 kWh to 17.9 kWh (27 percent increase) and it also fiddled with the drive modes to help the car be even more efficient than before. Claimed all-electric range, according to the WLTP cycle, goes up to 54 km (34 miles); it has yet to be rated by the EPA." https://insideevs.com/news/441023/porsche-panamera-4-e-hybrid-detailed/ KIA DETAILS PLUG-IN HYBRID SORENTO "Kia has detailed the plug-in hybrid version of its new Sorento seven-seat SUV, available from early next year. The powertrain comprises a 177bhp turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol engine mated to a 90bhp electric motor, fed energy by a 13.8kWh battery, for a combined system output of 261bhp" according to Autocar: "As standard, drive is sent to all four wheels through a six-speed automatic gearbox. it can transfer full power of both the engine and electric motor in parallel, which Kia claims results in "immediate acceleration response at any speeds, and direct access to available battery power at higher speeds. Kia also claims the powertrain is the first of its kind to use an independent water cooling system for the battery pack to ensure optimal efficiency." https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/kia-details-plug-hybrid-sorento-ahead-2021-debut 80% OF TESLA MODEL Y BUYERS COME FROM FOSSIL FUEL VEHICLES "Someone named Troy (or “Troy Teslike” on Twitter) has been fastidiously tracking Tesla Model 3 and Tesla Model Y orders for the past several years. His data is crowdsourced — Tesla reservation holders input their info and update it as their vehicles go through the system. " reports CleanTechnica: "According to his findings, nearly 80% of Model Y buyers are replacing fossil fuel powered vehicles. The data show 15.7% of Model Y buyers are replacing another Tesla, mostly the Model 3 (11.4%). For another 3%, the Model Y is their first car." https://cleantechnica.com/2020/08/27/nearly-80-of-tesla-model-y-buyers-come-from-fossil-fuel-vehicles-data-implies/ HYUNDAI 45 (AKA IONIQ 5) SPIED BEING QUIET BUT FAST ON THE NURBURGRING "The Hyundai 45 is back on the Nurburgring for a high-speed test session. Thankfully, this time our spies were able to catch the electric vehicle lapping the track on video, giving us a better look at its road behavior. For a crossover, it's almost glued to the road and quite stable in corners." says Motor1.com: "The good news is the vehicle is starting to look very much like the namesake concept from the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show. We didn’t expect the production model to look so close to the show car but we are happy to see the designers of the company have been given the green light to go with the unconventional styling." Likely to use dual motors, 300-mile range expected and circa 40k. BMW X5 XDRIVE45E: LONG-TERM TEST REVIEW Steve Fowler writes: "My 43.5mpg average is some way short of the official 200+mpg, and I’m managing to get around 47 miles of range from the battery. It takes a while to charge, though – the 24kWh pack is the same size as that in an original Nissan Leaf, and the reason for the X5’s decent electric range" It has an onboard 3.7kW single phase AC charger. 21kWh useable. 54 miles official. 7 hours to recharge. Show #640 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 13th November 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. TESLA’S MODEL 3 SUCCESS HITS BMW THE HARDEST Part 4 of Bloomberg's Tesla Owner survey is out and it's a recommended read. Here are some highlights: "We asked 5,000 owners about what it’s like to live with Elon Musk’s electric car. Here’s what we found. The average Model 3 goes for around $50,000, which is more than any of the top 10 vehicles that buyers traded in from other brands, according to responses to Bloomberg’s Model 3 owners survey. No other sedan in America is generating more revenue. While Tesla took the largest number of customers from Toyota, it affects the Japanese automaker very little. That’s because Toyota’s market share in the U.S. is enormous. [However] as a proportion of a brand’s U.S. sales. It shows BMW to be the automaker with the most to lose—almost five times more vulnerable than Mercedes-Benz. Many said Tesla’s mission to accelerate the adoption of electric cars creates an unusual sense of owner camaraderie. About 55% of respondents said their opinion of Musk influenced their decision to purchase the car. Model 3 Owners Are Tesla’s Biggest Sales Force." In terms of the brands most vulnerable, BMW, Mini, Audi, Acura, Infiniti, Porsche, Lexus and Mercedes-Benz. https://www.bloomberg.com/graphics/2019-tesla-model-3-survey/market-evolution.html#intro TESLA ADDS MORE BATTERY CAPACITY TO HELP EV OWNERS ESCAPE BUSH-FIRES "Tesla has issued a temporary software update to vehicle owners in regions of NSW and Queensland currently impacted by bush fires. It extends the available battery capacity in some models that otherwise have that capacity locked by the vehicle’s software." reports TheDriven.io: "the software update would allow owners of models that include the Tesla S 60 and 60D, which come installed with a 75kWh battery, but that is limited by software that makes only 60kWh available" https://thedriven.io/2019/11/13/with-flick-of-switch-tesla-adds-more-battery-capacity-to-help-ev-owners-escape-bush-fires/ SEAT MII ELECTRIC SEAT starts its electric offensive with the introduction of the Mii electric. The new model is SEAT’s first all-electric production vehicle and lays the groundwork for future members to join the family. More EVs and PHEVs are due in the near future, including the allelectric SEAT el-Born, plug-in hybrid versions of the Tarraco and Leon, and high-performance plug-in hybrid versions of CUPRA Formentor and CUPRA Leon. The Home Charge option adds a charging cable to charge directly at home using a 2.3 kW system, while Fast brings CCS fast charging capability with a DC charging capacity of 40kW. The all-electric city car is the first model to include SEAT CONNECT. The system gives remote access and management of the vehicle, so customers can review driving data, parking position, the vehicle’s status, including doors and lights, manage the charging process via the e-Manager and the ability to control air-conditioning remotely – an important technology when you’re faced with extremes in climate – all from a smartphone app. From electrive: "Seat makes the affordability of the electric model a selling point: Mii costs around the same as a combustion engine car of comparable size and power, only with lower running costs – and here Seat also refers to the significantly lower maintenance costs of electric vehicles. With regard to equipment, Seat has decided to keep the range simple: With the Mii electric and Mii electric Plus" EMPLOYERS SHOULD SEE WORKPLACE CHARGING AS MORE THAN A PERK FOR ITS WORKERS "Workplace electric vehicle charging is often seen as an employment perk both by businesses and their (current or prospective) employees, but that strategy could be short-sighted. On-site electric chargers may actually be a boon for business, a report suggests, potentially bringing in customers and attracting a stable, engaged workforce." according to Green Car Reports: "The study, conducted by Wood Mackenzie (a subsidiary of data analytics firm Verisk), says that businesses underestimate the value of on-site electric chargers. Data suggest that not only might electric chargers attract customers, but the particular types of buyers they bring in are highly desirable." https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1125927_report-employers-should-see-workplace-charging-as-more-than-a-perk-for-its-workers CHINA: 46.38 GWH OF EV BATTERIES DEPLOYED SO FAR THIS YEAR "The Chinese EV lithium-ion battery market grew so far this year to over 46 GWh, and close to 51% falls on CATL. BYD's share over 10 months is 20%, which together is almost 71%." reports InsideEVs: "Despite the YTD numbers being healthy, the past three months bring decline. Let's take a look at the details, provided by the Moneyball. Top Chinese EV battery manufacturers by installed capacity (January-October): CATL - 23.58 GWh (up 65%) BYD - 9.23 GWh (up 12%) Guoxuan - 2.37 GWh (up 43%) Lishen - 1.27 GWh (down 1%) CALB - 1.12 GWh (up 307%) Over ten months of 2019, some 46.38 GWh of batteries were deployed in New Energy Vehicles, which is 38% more than a year ago: Passenger cars - 33.61 GWh (up 55%) Buses - 9.39 GWh (down 8%) SPV (other) - 3.39 GWh (up 19%)" https://insideevs.com/news/381619/china-46-gwh-ev-batteries-deployed/ TESLA AUTOPILOT NEARS 2 BILLION MILES DRIVEN, FULL-SELF DRIVING CONTINUES TO IMPROVE "Tesla is yet to issue a formal announcement about its total Autopilot miles to date, though a model by MIT researcher Lex Fridman has predicted that the 2-billion-mile mark will be crossed sometime on November 11, 2019. That being said, Fridman’s model might even be a bit conservative, considering that Tesla’s fleet is growing by the day and more and more vehicles are traveling across the globe on Autopilot thanks to the Model 3 ramp." says Simon at Teslarati: "If Tesla does confirm Autopilot’s 2-billion-mile milestone, it would be a great accomplishment for the electric car maker. After all, it took 4 over four years for Tesla’s fleet of vehicles to reach 1 billion real-world miles on Autopilot. Provided that Lex Fridman’s estimates are accurate, Autopilot’s next billion miles seems to have taken less than a year to accomplish." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-autopilot-hits-2-billion-miles-full-self-driving/ NISSAN IS IN ABSOLUTE SHAMBLES From Forbes: "In Europe the Leaf also seems to be paying the price for being the pioneer overtaken by late-comers with better technology and sexier-looking models, said Berlin-based automotive analyst Matthias Schmidt. “The Leaf is in danger of being in the position of standing before the EV wall and assisting others over it, thanks to establishing the electric market early on with its first generation model, yet potentially finding it more of an effort to clear the wall itself once the other manufacturers have cleared it,” Schmidt said." https://www.forbes.com/sites/neilwinton/2019/11/12/nissan-leaf-sales-falter-as-new-competitors-offer-better-technology-looks/#7aacee5f1a74 From Jalopnik: "Hot on the heels of Honda announcing sales down, Nissan laid out a historically bad report of profits being down an amazing 70 percent, the company’s worst outlook in 11 years, as the Japan Times reports: Nissan, whose financial performance has been in the doldrums for nearly two years, cut its forecast for operating profit to 150 billion in the year through March 2020, from a previous forecast of 230 billion. The new forecast means earnings for the full year will be at their worst in 11 years." https://jalopnik.com/nissan-is-absolute-shambles-1839799530 SHELL FIXES FIRST EV CHARGING STATIONS IN U.S "Shell’s first electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in the United States, has been installed at Boston Logan International Airport." says PetrolWorld.com: "The 50-kW Veelfil-RT DC fast-charging stations were installed by Greenlots, a Los Angeles-based provider of EV charging and energy management software that was acquired by Shell in 2019, with the units manufactured by Tritium, an Australian firm. " https://www.petrolworld.com/headlines/item/33599-netherlands-shell-fixes-first-ev-charging-stations-in-u-s And from Fleet Europe: "Shell are extending their EV offer to our customers’ homes and workplaces. The acquisition of NewMotion in Europe has enabled Shell to provide charging points to tens of thousands of homes and businesses and it is offering a similar proposition with Greenlots in the US. To help enable cheaper charging for their customers, Shell have also been piloting smart-charging technology in the UK and Germany that helps integrate EVs into the power grid at times when overall demand is at its lowest." https://www.fleeteurope.com/en/new-energies/europe/features/transition-low-carbon-energy-shell-fleet-solutions?t%5B0%5D=Shell&t%5B1%5D=NewMotion&curl=1 QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week… If you had to pick ONE upside to driving an EV, what would be it be? GM AND TESLA UNLOCK CONNECTED CAR FEATURES TO HELP WITH HURRICANE DORIAN "With Hurricane Dorian threatening the East Coast, some automakers are leveraging their networks of connected cars to help out. General Motors is offering its free OnStar Crisis Assist to owners in Dorian-threatened areas, and Tesla will provide free Supercharging and unlock the software-limited range of some of its cheaper models to help its owners flee the storm." reports ArsTechnca: "As is becoming tradition during hurricane season, GM says that its OnStar advisors can help route people away from danger or toward resources like shelter, food, and water; the service can even help with booking hotel rooms where feasible. OnStar-equipped vehicles will get free hands-free calling minutes and data for the cars' LTE hotspots. Similarly, Tesla CEO Elon Musk told a Tesla Model 3 twitter account that his company would again help out with free Supercharging and extra range for some vehicles. For 2017's Hurricane Irma and 2018's Hurricanes Florence and Michael, Tesla temporarily extended the range on Model S and Model X 60D vehicles in hurricane states. These vehicles have identical 75kWh lithium-ion battery packs to the more expensive 75D models, but they are software-locked to just 60kWh." https://arstechnica.com/cars/2019/09/gm-and-tesla-unlock-connected-car-features-to-help-with-hurricane-dorian/ TESLA RELEASES A FULLY VEGAN MODEL 3, TO THE DELIGHT OF ANIMAL-LOVERS "Despite all of its green credentials, the Tesla Model 3 fell down in one area: a leather steering wheel. But not any more. Following pressure from customers and animal rights groups such as PETA, Tesla has decided to make the Model 3 completely vegan, offering a leather-free steering wheel to match the existing 'Tesla Synthetic Material' used in the seating." according to Tech Radar: "The option is not a completely new one; the Model S and Model X have been available with vegan-friendly steering wheels for a little while now. At the company's annual shareholder meeting in June, Elon Musk announced that the interior of the Model 3 would be completely vegan by 2020. It is not only possible to buy a new Tesla Model 3 with a non-leather steering wheel; the company is also offering retrofits which are reported to cost $550 plus $50 labour. Next year's Model Y will also be a fully vegan vehicle." https://www.techradar.com/uk/news/tesla-releases-a-fully-vegan-model-3-to-the-delight-of-animal-lovers NEXT GENERATION OF ELECTRIC CARS HEADING TO EUROPE "Electric car brand Karma is set to bring its new model to Europe, taking on Tesla to become the leader in luxury electric vehicles." says Euronews.com: "Karma has put a hefty price tag of $135,000 (€123,128) on the model, each of which are bespoke with one-off designs created for each customer. So committed is the brand to becoming a leader in luxury electronic cars that it has hired former Tesla executive, Rogier Kroymans, to coordinate the launch of the 2020 Revero in Europe. Its ‘stealth’ mode is purely electric, allowing for emissions-free travel, while ‘sustain’ turns on the range-extending generator to preserve the battery pack’s power for use when the driver chooses. It also has a ‘sport’ mode that combines the output from the battery pack and the generator for maximum driving performance." https://www.euronews.com/living/2019/09/03/next-generation-of-electric-cars-heading-to-europe VEHICLE TO GRID TECHNOLOGY SET FOR PLYMOUTH PILOT "Plymouth City Council in the UK is set to implement a pilot project testing the use of vehicle to grid capability with its electric vehicle fleet." reports governmenteuropa.eu: "The council has partnered with technology conglomerate Cisco to trial Cisco’s E-Flex demonstration project, which will implement vehicle to grid technology in the council’s six Nissan Leaf electric vehicles. Each car will be fitted with a bidirectional charger, which allows vehicles to draw electrical charge from the energy grid and then return unused electricity back to the grid when the vehicle is not in use: the technology enables the user to save on costs and reduces pressure on the grid at times of peak charging." https://www.governmenteuropa.eu/vehicle-to-grid-technology/94528/ DUTCH GOVERNMENT TREATS 21 MUNICIPALITIES TO SMART EV CHARGERS "Vehicle-to-grid functions could soon become increasingly important. While policymakers discuss the necessary regulations in other nations, the Netherlands government is motoring ahead with the technology." writes PV Magazine: "By providing a €5 million grant, the ministry is helping install 472 smart chargers with vehicle-to-grid functionality across 21 municipalities. The first smart chargers will be available for public use next year. The ministry said vehicle-to-grid functionality will be made available to various car models, with the Nissan Leaf and Renault Zoe already compatible. The project will enable EV drivers to capitalize on the provision of power to the grid from their batteries at times of peak demand." https://www.pv-magazine.com/2019/09/03/dutch-government-treats-21-municipalities-to-smart-ev-chargers/ RIVIAN R1T ELECTRIC PICKUP TRUCK SHOWS UP IN WHITE, COVERED IN DIRT "The Rivian R1T electric pickup truck was spotted out on an adventure. This truck is dressed in white paint (unlike the silver we've seen on all R1Ts to date), though it's covered in a lot of dirt." says InsideEVs: "Our friends over at Rivian Forums shared these images, as well as some notes, which we've listed below. The trucks are out in Argentina for some testing in extreme conditions (and likely for some filming too, which we'll keep our eyes peeled for). We expect to see a few more changes as the R1T moves from prototype to production, but the truck is very close to production-ready. Unlike the promised $50,000 Tesla truck, Rivian seems to be way more realistic here. In regards to pricing, the Rivian R1T comes in a few different flavors, so the price tag will vary quite considerably. However, Rivian targets a starting price of $69,000 for the base version of the R1T, but the automaker notes that top-level versions will be sold first and we suspect those will go for well over $100,000." https://insideevs.com/news/368455/rivian-r1t-pickup-truck-off-road-white/ ABB IS EMPLOYING AZIPOD FOR HEAVY-DUTY SHIPPING "ABB has entered a new market segment with its Azipod electric marine propulsion system: The technology group will install the electric propulsion for the first time on board two container cargo ships." according to electrive: "The two ships, to be delivered to Oldendorff Carriers by the Chinese shipyard Chengxi in 2021, will each be equipped with two 1.9 MW Azipod units. These are propeller nacelles mounted under the ship – ABB is one of the six largest manufacturers of such propeller nacelles with the Azipod system. These can be rotated 360 degrees and thus increase manoeuvrability. Each nacelle has an electric motor. However, it does not receive its power from a high-voltage accumulator, but rather from a serial hybrid: the ship’s diesel engine drives a generator that generates the necessary electricity. ABB also supplies the generators, bow thruster motors, transformers, control panels and the energy management system." https://www.electrive.com/2019/09/03/abb-is-employing-azipod-on-heavy-shipping/ VOLKSWAGEN E-GOLF GETS £2,765 VALUE BOOST Volkswagen UK has reduced the price of the e-Golf to £31,075 RRP OTR, which equates to £27,575 after the Government’s Plug-In Car Grant. An OTR price reduction of £2,765 makes the e-Golf an even more value-friendly offering. Volkswagen’s electric journey doesn’t start and finish with the e-Golf, however. The arrival of the ID.3 electric hatchback in 2020 will see Volkswagen’s much-anticipated electric vehicle plans come to fruition, built upon a purpose-built electric platform, the Modular Electric Drive Kit (MEB). This will underpin a whole range of pure electric ID. vehicles, as Volkswagen aims for electromobility leadership – building electric cars for millions, not millionaires. Show #443 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 14th April 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Hello to new Patreon PRODUCER Pete Stothard holland DAVID FINCH : I’ve just listened to the Saturday podcast. I’m not sure if it’s worthy of a little correction or not, but you quoted Elon as saying deliveries starting May / June, when in fact his tweet said “hopefully June / July”. RENE SCHNIEDER: "I just got a letter these minutes that the standard range plus is available for order in Switzerland: „From today on the Model 3 Standard Range Plus is available in Switzerland." TOM RAFTERY: "It that time of year to organise the summer holidays (possibly I’ve left it a bit late already!). And I want to bring the family to Norway to show them what a country with a high penetration of Evs can look like (and to take in the beautiful scenery Norway can offer). I have been trying to find information on EV hire options in Norway, and there isn’t a lot out there (that I found)." RIVIAN R1T TRUCK & R1S SUV WOW NYC AHEAD OF AUTO SHOW "The New York Auto Show doesn’t officially open to the public until April 19th, but that doesn’t mean the fun hasn’t already started. The weekend before an auto show opens is usually the real kickoff party, with manufacturers trying to get a jump on the competition, and many opt to show off their new vehicles before they hit the show floor the following week. That precisely what Rivian did with its R1T electric pickup truck and R1S electric SUV." reports Tom " InsideEVs.com: "These events were mostly for VIPs and reservation holders; they weren’t press events where we could schedule interview time, so unfortunately nothing new was learned. I suspect if Rivian is going to announce any new news, it will be done so during the Auto Show for maximum exposure. As you might expect, the crowd was extremely enthusiastic, and it reminded me of how it feels at Tesla events. Since most of the people in attendance were reservation holders, they were already on-board with what Rivian is doing. Plus, for most, it was their first opportunity to see the vehicles that they plunked $1,000 down on to reserve." https://insideevs.com/rivian-wows-nyc-r1t-electric-pickup-truck-video/ MITCH EVANS EARNS FIRST FORMULA E VICTORY FOR PANASONIC JAGUAR RACING Panasonic Jaguar Racing’s Mitch Evans claims an emotional first victory in Rome with DS Techeetah’s Andre Lotterer in second and HWA Racelab’s Stoffel Vandoorne bringing home both his and the team’s first podium finish in the ABB FIA Formula E Championship. Evans stalked the back of Lotterer’s car in the opening phase of the race, with the DS TECHEETAH driver unable to pull a gap. With both teams and drivers evenly-matched on pace, it became a tactical battle about when to deploy ATTACK MODE. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ccQUaK9RlM AUDI ANNOUNCES Q2 L E-TRON WITH 38 KWH BATTERY FOR CHINA From the Audi Press Office: "two electric models will make their series debut in Shanghai: the Audi e-tron* and the Q2 L e-tron, which was designed especially for China and is built in the Foshan plant. The compact SUV, which will be delivered to the first customers in the summer of 2019, is even experiencing its world premiere in Shanghai. Audi CEO Bram Schot: “With both the Audi Q2 L e-tron and Audi e-tron electric models, we are launching a new era in China with our partner FAW. The compact SUV will be produced locally already this year and, beginning in 2020, the Audi e-tron will also be produced in China, our largest and most important market worldwide.” The body of the Audi Q2 L e-tron is 33 millimeters (1.3 in) longer than that of the basic model. The car is powered by an electric motor on the front axle that mobilizes 100 kilowatts and 290 newton meters (213.9 lb-ft). With a battery capacity of 38 kilowatt hours, it has a range of up to 265 kilometers (164.7 mi), determined according to the local homologation procedure." https://www.audi-mediacenter.com/en/press-releases/audi-at-auto-shanghai-2019-11479 POLESTAR 2 PUTS FOCUS ON CHINA WITH MANUFACTURING SITE AND FIRST POLESTAR SPACE LOCATION CONFIRMED At the Chinese debut of the Polestar 2 in Shanghai, Polestar confirmed that production of the new electric performance fastback will take place in Luqiao, Zhejiang Province, from early 2020. The production facility will also produce world-class Volvo and Lynk & Co. models that share their core CMA platform with Polestar 2. Polestar 2 is the first car on the modular chassis to feature a fully electric drivetrain. Thomas Ingeleth, Chief Executive Officer at Polestar: “Being able to produce Polestar 2 in the Luqiao plant in China shows the clear synergies of our ownership structure and gives us a great industrial advantage. With Geely and Volvo Cars as our owners, we are able to leverage their expertise in many different ways. Manufacturing is one of the most important areas, helping us accelerate our progress and entry into the market with the confidence that Polestar 2 production will begin as planned early next year.” Following the confirmation in 2018 that the first-ever Polestar Space will be located in Oslo, Norway, Polestar has now confirmed that the first Polestar Space in China will be located in central Beijing. Establishing the Polestar footprint initially in Oslo and Beijing highlights two of the world’s most influential electric car markets as primary targets for the brand. The Polestar Space in Beijing will open in late 2019 and signals the roll-out of Polestar Spaces in China. Around 20 facilities spread between 11 Chinese cities will be opened during 2020 – about one third of all initial Polestar Spaces expected to be opened globally. ELON MUSK ANNOUNCES APRIL 22 AS START OF TESLA FULL SELF DRIVING "Tesla announced a new event – Tesla Autonomy Investor Day – on April 22 at its headquarters in Palo Alto. There are not many details about the event, besides the topic of autonomous driving. According to Elon Musk, investors can expect a demo of full autonomous driving," says Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com: "One of the biggest projects is the Tesla Network – a fleet of autonomous cars, available for sharing. It would be a double win for the manufacturer – first because it provides another stream of revenue and second because Tesla could use cars at the end of lease (no buyout option was previously announced)." https://insideevs.com/musk-announces-april-22-as-start-of-tesla-full-self-driving/ VOLKSWAGEN UNVEILS ID. ROOMZZ ELECTRIC SUV CONCEPT IN SHANGHAI; SERIES MODEL IN 2021 Volkswagen is expanding its electric ID. product range with a multi-variable all-round model: the new ID. ROOMZZ—a zero-emission SUV in the five meter category. Volkswagen will present the concept car as part of a world première at Auto Shanghai (18 to 26 April) in an homage to China, currently the largest market for zero-emission vehicles. The series version of the ID. ROOMZZ—which follows on the more compact ID. CROZZ—is scheduled to take to the road from 2021. Alongside the ID. ROOMZZ, the ID. CROZZ and the compact ID. (all set to have a market début in 2020), other members of this new electric vehicle family include the iconic ID. BUZZ van and the avant-garde saloon ID. VIZZION (both will make their market début in 2022). in the European WLTP cycle the maximum range is 450 kilometers (280 miles). The battery is charged via an inductive interface. Conventional charging via a plug is also possible. The ID. ROOMZZ combines its IQ.DRIVE systems, enabling the concept car to navigate traffic all by itself (fully automated) as desired. Volkswagen is consolidating all assistance systems and technologies involved in autonomous driving under the umbrella brand IQ.DRIVE." https://www.greencarcongress.com/2019/04/20190414-roomzz.html QUESTION OF THE WEEK BRIAN THOMPSON Several reasons to be reticent... - Parts and service centers are not readily available -if you had rich rebuilds in your town, I would consider -I've recently had some things crop up at 70k on my 85 S that would have cost a lot had it not have been a covered under warranty. They replaced the entire battery pack. Then a couple thousand miles later the charge port went out. On the loaner they gave me, that car had 50k on it, the main screen went out... -if you had rich rebuilds knowledge, then you could go for it, but at 250k there is no, zero, zippo warranty and you would be covering the cost. If you still are interested, call and ask Tesla what the cost is to get a rebuilt high voltage battery pack, as well as getting the main CPU and screen replaced, as well as drive unit and inverter. Those are the big ticket items. If this was ten years from now and there were lots of used parts available then it would be a different situation. I would try to claw my way into a CPO car with less than 50k on it, that way it comes with 4 year 50k warranty. In the US, tesla is selling the 2012 and 2013 85s in the low $30,000 with financing. RAJEEV NARAYAN I think one should expect to have to put some money into any vehicle with > 250,000 miles, with respect to EVs the question is the longevity of the expensive bits- the powertrain and the battery. It is known that an electric powertrain generally lasts much longer, in fact I think Tesla even suggested their powertrain can go potentially > 1 million miles. With respect to the battery, I know the NMC 622 cells in most EVs nowadays can cycle about 2,000 to 3,000 times before i'ts capacity has degraded to 80 to 90%, at which point they say it's "unsuitable" for further EV use, though in my opinion that's debatable- given the C rating of most of these battery cells. My Chevy Bolt has a 60kWH battery and EPA estimate of 3.8miles/kWH, giving 456,000 to 684,000 miles. ASEER A EV is different and a million mile is not that outlandish a claim as motors run production lines 24/7 for many years and we don’t expect them to fail quickly today the same would be true for EVs and given that brakes also last longer (regen) it seems if your a highmiler EV is an obvious choice. This is before we take into consideration comfort and space. JON AKA BEARDY MCBEARDFACE Firstly I think you should go for a high mileage Tesla, I would if I could afford it. Would make a great story to write about and to follow...”Life with a super high mileage Tesla” or “High mileage Tesla....what could go wrong” JOHN FRUHWIRTH Given what I know now, Yes, I would buy a very high mileage EV but iff (if and only if) it is was a Tesla model 3. Why? Because: Its drive train is guaranteed for 1 million miles. Its batteries should last anywhere from 300k-500k miles. It's frame has been over engineered. It is the safest car on the road ...John Fruhwirth TOBE IN SAN DIEGO I for one think it'd be brilliant for you to get the super high mileage Tesla and keep us apprised of your trials and tribulations with it...if you can afford it. I presume that could at least be considered a business expense for a podcaster like you. I would definitely worry that it could end up costing costing you some pounds though. (plus in depth story about his 2012 Model S 85) MATT PISCIONE Yes. with a caveat. As someone who works as a technician for an automotive manufacturer with an EV named after something that you might find in trees, based on their battery degradation issues I would probably not. However, the mechanical components are very durable as they are shared with other vehicles. That being said, I would be much more inclined to purchase a different EV that does not have battery degradation issues. JAMES LOVES as a Mercedes Benz master tech here in California I my self have replaced six -B- class "ELECTRIC MACHINES" due to internal coolant leaks. These repairs were done under warranty thank goodness as the ELECTRIC MACHINE is a very pricey item. This front wheel drive unit is the same as the rear power unit used in the Tesla model -S-. Another thing one might consider is the battery warranty is 8 years 100k(miles) how ever a high voltage battery inspection of degradation must be performed annually and recorded.(Tesla battery Tesla drive train) if not performed or skipped the warranty is lost. This has kept me from My own purchase of a used -B- class as they are truly a blast to drive and have all the comforts of a Benz. DAFYDD Although all the electric gubbins would in all likelihood have plenty of life left in them. One has to consider, the rest of the vehicle has also done all those miles too. As have all the interior fittings. I’d be more willing to buy such a vehicle if I lived in Norway, Sweden, Finland or the like, where they routinely under-seal a vehicle for winter and clean it off and inspect the underside in spring. I’d be more willing to buy one, if the vehicle had be kept hot dry climate. Where salting roads was unheard of. CHARLIE MILNER I'm currently looking at a second had Tesla. I'm looking at up to 90,000 miles. One thing that would concern me is the suspension wear. I had an old MK4 golf that after 120k miles the tracking was adjusted as much as possible and it was only just about ok. Indicating suspension components needed to be changed. If there is evidence the tracking is ok and it's been well looked after I'd consider higher milage. The motor and battery (especially with Tesla) is not a concern to me. GARETH FROM THE CHARGEUP CAMPAIGN Although it does not meet your definition of high mileage my 2014 Leaf has been a bit of a mixed bag. Technically within the warranty period but with 96k on the clock it was outside the warranty range by about 36k. It has been pretty much reliable but I have found that I am paying for the maintenance for other people’s miles (droplink bars, track rod ends, tyres, 12 battery etc) and the charger died since as an ex taxi it had done over 4,600 rapid charges. I fixed this myself at a cost of £500 though Nissan wanted a mere £24k! My hope is that now all that work is done it will just work for quite some time. NISSAN LEAF E+ BRINGS MORE POWER, MORE RANGE So by now you may have seen the news online the long awaited Nissan LEAF has a new longer range variant. Well, it will do later in 2019 when you can finally get one. Here's everything I’ve been able to dig up for you, and some of my thoughts based on the first 12 hours of reaction. Let's start with what the same, everything you can see! Exterior will have a new badge and interior has an 8" screen rather than 7". You will charge it with CHAdeMO and not CCS. First up from InsideEVs, clarity on the name and when you can get one: "Nissan LEAF e+ is the global name for the car, but particularly in the U.S. and Canada, Nissan would like to name the top of the line version – the LEAF PLUS Series. There will be three trim levels: LEAF S PLUS, LEAF SV PLUS and LEAF SL PLUS. Market launch plan: Japan – January 2019, U.S. – Spring 2019 (pricing to be announced closer to on-sale date) Europe – Mid-2019. Battery - it's 62kWh not the 60kWh we were led to believe, or even the 64kWh assumed when rumours last year pointed towards them using LG Chem packs. "Even with a 25 percent increase in energy density and the increase in energy storage capacity, the LEAF e+ battery pack is almost the same size and configuration as the pack in the Nissan LEAF. Other than a 5-millimeter increase in overall height (16-inch wheels), the car’s exterior and interior dimensions are unchanged" says Nissan So that range is 226 miles (364 km) EPA range vs 151 miles (243 km) for the 40kW version. Nissan says: "Thanks to the available new 70 kW (100 kW peak) Quick Charging system, the 2019 Nissan LEAF e+ can charge more efficiently than ever.*3 Based on early testing, Nissan LEAF e+ owners can expect similar charging times when hooked up to a 100 kW charger as current LEAF owners do with a 50 kW charger, despite a 55 percent larger battery storage capacity.” Motor: the 160kW motor us up from 110kW, a 36% increase. They are drawing our attention to the 50mph-70mph difference. Pricing: The base Nissan LEAF e+ will start from ¥4,162,320 (around $38,370). In the case of Europe, Nissan announced two Limited Edition versions for “old” and new version: LEAF 3.ZERO (40 kWh) – from €39,900 (orders now, deliveries from May). LEAF 3.ZERO e+ (62 kWh) – from €45,500 (orders now, deliveries from Summer). If you add the same premium to US prices it should be ~$35k. ZERO gets the bigger screen and phone mirroring, and colours. And it's available to order now. Nissan says: "“The Nissan LEAF 3.ZERO e+ Limited Edition will also be available to order from January 9 across European markets. This limited edition – of which only 5,000 units will be produced for Europe – will feature a higher output capable of delivering 160 kW (217 PS) and longer range capabilities with expected driving range of up to 385 km* from a single charge." Forbes says: "The battery continues to be supplied by AESC, Nissan’s in-house battery division that is in the process of being sold to China's Envison Group. Like all prior iterations of the Leaf it is still air-cooled, running contrary to the industry conventions. Also contrary to some earlier speculation, Nissan hasn't switched to LG Chem as a cell supplier." https://insideevs.com/nissan-reveals-leaf-e-plus-ces/ https://insideevs.com/nissan-announces-leaf-e-price-europe-japan/ https://www.forbes.com/sites/samabuelsamid/2019/01/08/2020-nissan-leaf-plus-crosses-the-200-mile-threshold/#341706836ece MINI PLOTS MAIDEN HOT HATCH EV FOR 2019 REVEAL "Mini’s first electric car will also be the industry’s first electric hot hatch, engineering sources in Germany have revealed." says Mark Tisshaw for Autocar: "Rather than a sole focus on economy and eking out range, Mini is developing its electric car with performance in mind. To that end, the model will be badged Cooper S E when it is unveiled later this year to reflect its performance hierarchy in the Mini range. The BMW i3 S’s 181bhp electric motor is understood to be the most likely power source for the new Mini, meaning it will give little away to the 189bhp 2.0-litre engine of the Cooper S." The drivetrain won't include BMW's 5th generation technology though. https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/mini-plots-maiden-hot-hatch-ev-2019-reveal NINE IN 10 ELECTRIC CAR DRIVERS WOULD NEVER GO BACK TO PETROL "Almost nine in 10 electric vehicle drivers would never go back to driving a car powered by petrol or diesel, according to new research" reports Motor1.com: "A study by electric vehicle YouTube channel Fully Charged found that 88 percent of plug-in car drivers said they would definitely not switch back to fossil fuels after having owned an electric vehicle (EV). Seven percent of those quizzed said they were not sure whether they would turn back to internal combustion, while the remaining five percent said they would consider making a return to petrol- or diesel-powered cars. However, just under a quarter of the channel’s audience (24 percent) said they currently owned an electric car, with the vast majority (54 percent) claiming to own a petrol-powered vehicle. Diesel was the second most popular fuel, accounting for 35 percent of viewers, while a combined total of 11 percent were the owners of petrol hybrids or plug-in hybrids." With 7,700 taking part in the survey it's a large number. https://uk.motor1.com/news/299997/ev-drivers-wont-return-petrol/ MERCEDES EQC GETS SAMPLED BY JAY LENO "Until it actually makes market debut, the 2019 Mercedes-Benz EQC gets the Jay Leno treatment." according to DriveMag: "Naturally, Mr. Leno drives an EQC 400 4Matic in prototype guise and for more background on the EV, he takes Bastian Schult (Powertrain Testing Engineer at Mercedes-Benz) for a ride. Now, you might already know that the EQC relies on an 80-kWh battery pack that allows for a max range of 280 miles (450 km) on a single charge, with power coming from two electric motors that make together 408 PS (300 kW)" MERCEDES EQC ELECTRIC SUV TO COST FROM UNDER £50K IN THE UK? .."The new Mercedes EQC – Mercedes’ electric SUV aimed at the Jaguar I-Pace and Audi e-tron – looks set to cost from under £50k when it arrives in the UK." speculates CarsUK.net: "When Leno asked the Mercedes man how much the EQC would cost in the US, he didn’t have an answer. But he did say that in Europe it will cost about the same as the Mercedes GLC 43. Which, in the UK, starts at £48,960. If the Mercedes man is right, you’ll be able to grab an electric Mercedes SUV with 400bhp, 0-62mph in around 5.0 seconds, an 80kWh battery pack and a range of over 200 miles for £15k less than an I-Pace and £20k less than an e-tron." http://www.carsuk.net/mercedes-eqc-electric-suv-to-cost-from-under-50k-in-the-uk/ FIRST AUDI E-TRON DELIVERIES IN GERMANY FEBRUARY Talking of the e-tron, Mark Kane at InsdeiEV's.com published a story today: "So far, several hundred cars were registered in the first few markets, but it turns out that customer deliveries will not happen this month. According to industry analyst Matthias Schmidt (schmidtmatthias.de), first customers in Germany will get the e-tron in February. If Audi does not sort out its problems with the e-tron launch, it will be overtaken in Europe by Tesla Model 3, which also should hit the market in February." https://insideevs.com/first-audi-e-tron-deliveries-germany-postponed/ TOYOTA PUSHES HYBRIDS DESPITE SLOWING GAS-ELECTRIC AUTO SALES "Don't tell Toyota the once hot gas-electric hybrid vehicle is losing its appeal." says CNBC: "The automaker is planning to leverage its dominance in hybrid autos as it grows the number of full- and hybrid-electric vehicles sold in the U.S. and around the world." Bob Carter, executive vice president of sales for Toyota North America "We are working on an entire portfolio of hybrids which we have been selling since 1997, plug-in hybrids, full battery electric vehicles as well as our fuel cell vehicles. Those vehicles represent about 9 percent of our sales in 2018. We have set a goal that it will be 15% of our sales next year in 2020." Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Sunday 8th July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. SWISS CHARGERS BY EVTEC PLUGGED INTO 60KWH NISSAN LEAF EVTEC (@EVTECfastcharge) - First attempt successful: The #NISSAN LEAF charges with 102 kW. #EVTEC #CHAdeMO #Fastcharging #Electromobility So it looks like what we talked about yesterday was true, a fast charging rate of 102 kW at the SoC (State-of-Charge) of 32 %. So that would be almost certain that it's the new Nissan LEAF unless they've worked out a way to charge the current 40Kwh battery at twice the speed it's rated at. And considering some owners of the new LEAF are getting 20-30kW on their second rapid charge due to temps, it would be surprising if this wasn't the 2019 model year LEAF. So a recap on the leaked specs, and none of this is official yet. 160kW motor will replace the current 110kW motor. 0-60mph or 0-100kmh will be between 6-7 seconds. The battery capacity will be 64kWh with 60kWh usable. And that should give you a range at least 225 miles, which the Thermal Management System will help with as well as helping with charge rates. The DC Fast Charger will be rated at 100kW and if it's in line with others you’ll be charging at 11kW at home. However, and here it comes, the price is one of the best things about the Nissan LEAF, and it won't be cheap. My prediction is £30,000 before any incentives, that's 34,000 Euro, $52,000 CAD or $40,000 USD. @philroberts - That looks like a rebranded Delta Ultra charger that we offer, looks strange though as can’t see the Chademo holder in the centre and those units I’m pretty sure are only rated for 62.5kW at the moment on Chademo, I’ll ask the question. To be clear it will do 150kW on CCS just not sure it will do that on Chademo as the specs say 125A @500v (62.5kW) although I know the new Chademo spec is out for upto 400kW. That unit is 300A capable but think that’s only for two chargers at same time eg CCS & Chademo together. WILL TESLA MODEL 3 DOUBLE THE SPEED OF MODEL S? "There’s a very interesting thread going on right now over at Tesla Motors Club Forum. It’s along the same lines as a recent article InsideEVs published about Model 3 Supercharging rates" reports George Bower: "based on a Tesla EPA document it looks like the Model 3 could be capable of a maximum charging current of 525 amps. as TMC member Zoomit points out, 116 kW is basically the limit of Gen 2 Superchargers. Perhaps we are seeing a charger limit and not a car limit. Maybe the Model 3 is actually capable of charging at HIGHER than 116 kW. If the Tesla Model 3 could hold this charge rate to 50% state of charge, it would imply 180 kW of charging power." https://insideevs.com/tesla-shipping-model-3-with-2x-model-s-p100d-supercharging-c-rate/ TESLA OFFERS MODEL 3 TEST DRIVES FOR FIRST TIME Tesla started offering test drives of the Model 3 at four Bay Area locations: Dublin-Amador Plaza, Corte Madera, Sunnyvale and Palo Alto. Yesterday Tesla stareted offering Model 3 test drives at four more locations in the region: San Jose, Burlingame, San Francisco and Stanford Shopping Center in Palo Alto. "The test drives are offered to people who have put down $1,000 deposits on the Model 3. A Tesla staffer will accompany drivers." says The Mercury News. NEXT PEUGEOT 208 GTI TO GO ELECTRIC? Here's a story I first saw in AutoExpress and now it's in Evo.co.uk where Jordan Katsianis says: "The next Peugeot 208 GTi is likely to feature a pure electric drivetrain when it arrives in showrooms next year. As for the next 208 GTi, while the electric version may not immediately strike us as ideal hot hatch material, we’d be lying if we said we weren’t curious about what an all-electric Peugeot GTi might be like to drive." UK EV SALES EXCEED 6,000 IN LAST MONTH Here in the UK it's still Plug In Hybrids which are surging ahead of pure BEVs. 1,519 BEVs (up 4% year-over-year) 4,753 PHEVs (up 54% year-over-year) Diesel sales were down -30% in the first half of the year SEE VOLKSWAGEN'S I.D. R PIKES PEAK RUN FROM A HELICOPTER "This year Volkswagen took its all-electric I.D. R to Pikes Peak and took home the overall record. With Romain Dumas behind the wheel of this 671-hp all-electric race car, the VW managed to run the 12.42-mile circuit in only seven minutes and 57.148 seconds, which was 16 seconds faster than Sebastien Loeb’s 2013 record" according to Autoweek.com: "If you wanted to see what that run looked like, here’s your chance to take a bird’s-eye view. While this isn’t as mind-bending as watching Porsche’s 919 Evo shave a minute off the Nurburgring record, watching Dumas conquer Pikes Peak with only the whirr of electric motors is definitely a different experience." RELAX, YOUR ELECTRIC CAR WON’T SHORT-CIRCUIT YOUR PACEMAKER This will make you smile. You know we were talking about EV myths, here's one i hadn't heard. "Thanks to a recent study by German scientists, one other question appears to have been answered: Electric cars, they found, won’t interfere with a person’s pacemaker" says UF Health Podcasts: "The team found the electromagnetic strength was highest when the cars were being charged, but there was no pacemaker inhibition, no shocks and no devices needed to be reprogrammed. Electric cars are equipped with shielding to prevent electromagnetic interference with on-board computer systems, which the researchers said could explain the low electromagnetic strength inside the cars. This shielding may also be what protected the heart devices from any interference." COMMUNITY @SveinMedhus - Not a single #BEV spoted in Mallorca this week, not even at this charger at Lluc. We have seen one real donkey and plenty of diesel-donkeys. Our donkey driver did not believe in the new 500 chargers to be paid by the ecotax by 2020 as reported by @EVNewsDaily . I miss #Norway
Thursday 26th April 2018. BMW iX3 TO BE MADE IN, AND EXPORTED FROM, CHINA The biggest car launch today was technically a concept, but let’s report on it because it’s such big news. The massively popular BMW X3 is finally confirmed as being an electric model, the iX3. And equally as big news, it is set to be made in China and be exported to USA and Europe. And it’s very similar to the X3 apart from BMW playing around with the kidney style grill. It will enter production in 2020 and is the first example I can think of to be a luxury upmarket car made in China and exported. What happened to quality only coming from Germany? And BMW sell a lot of SUV in North America so it’s a calculated risk, and means a lot for their reputation. They already make the plug in Z1 in China. The iX3 will have a range of 400km which is 250miles, but there’s no direction on whether. For comparison the new 40kWh Nissan LEAF has a 150mile EPA range. And it’s a strong effort to go up against the Jaguar I-PACE, the Audi e-tron Quattro, the Mercedes EQC crossover due next year in 2019. So smart money is on a 70kWh battery pack, and they’ve confirmed 150kW charge speeds. The motor is a very reasonable 200kW of power. The platform will come with battery packs from 60kWh to 120kWh depending on the needs of performance. Electrive say: “The core of the iX3 is very compact. The fifth generation eDrive contains the electric motor, transmission and performance electronics in one component. A further novelty is the fact that the electric motor was designed without using any rare-earth metals. Added to this development, are the new battery specs, which have improved performance characteristics, range, size and flexibility, according to the manufacturer.” NISSAN’S LEAF WHICH IS A SYLPHY A new car was launched by Nissan yesterday – welcome to the world the Nissan Sylphy. From the front it’s a LEAF, from the back it’s a pretty generic sedan, from the side, it’s a LEAF-and-a-bit on the back. It’s Nissan’s first EV built for China and yes it does share the LEAF platform. Based on the Chinese cycle it’s good for 210 miles or 340kms. That sounds to me like the 40kWh AESC batteries and not the new larger 60kWh LG Chem batteries, because surely that range would be higher. Given that the Chinese standards are more forgiving than the EPA. It does feature the e-Pedal technology which has everyone impressed. It will be on sale this year. But will we see it in the US? Will we see it in Europe like the BMW? Nope. I would expect it to be very cheap however based on comments from Carlos Ghosn that even their own Nissan LEAF is too expensive for the Chinese market. VOLVO XC40 PHEV Volvo was the first major name to say all their cars will be electrified by 2019, and now they’ve said half of its annual, worldwide sales will be electric cars within 7 years. And a lot can happen in 7 years! 2025 is the year when China wants 7 million electric cars being sold a year that’s 20% of all sales. We’ve seen the XC40 T5 Plug-in Hybrid at Auto China 2018 in Beijing, in their No.1 market in China. It has a 1.5litre three-cylinder engine coupled with the electric motor, and of course can run on electricity only, but we don’t know how far. At the show Volvo are only showing off cars with plugs – those being the XC40, 60 and 90. Volvo’s owner Geely has developed the powertrain which is also set to be used in Lynk&Co models, and for Geely’s own models in China. Autocar say: “Three main drive modes will be available with the T5 model: Hybrid, Power and Pure. The first will work to most efficiently combine both parts of the powertrain, while power will maximise the output of both. The final will harness only the electric motor.” HONDA EVERUS CONCEPT In Beijng Honda has shown off another concept, and another stunner. The Everus – a mass produced B segment car for the Chinese market. Again the show in China is being used to show off the body and styling without any firm details of the drivetrain but it’s due to be in the hands of customers this year, and built by a joint venture, as is the deal with China, with GAC Group. TOYOTA WILL HAVE TO GET SOME PLUGS Toyota might be famous for running ad campaigns saying we don’t believe in plugging in our hybrids, but someone forgot to tell the engineers. That’s because the Corolla and Levin are being shown off at Auto China 2018 to be on sale next year, and a full BEV in 2020. A full BEV for Toyota? But only for China! It’s based on the C-HR compact SUV. The Chinese partner for Toyota is GAC. The plug ins are said to do 50kms on pure electric alone, obviously made in China. These are the start of 10 new models, and also a R&D centre in China, to move forward with pure battery tech. NEW BRAND FOR VW Volkswagen has launched a new car brand at Auto China called SOL, and the first car under that, the E20X. And again it’s the lovechild of VW with a domestic maker, JAC. Like the Honda it will be on sale this year, taking same parts of the JAC iEV7S, running 186 miles on one charge, it has smart charging, self-parking and luxuries like parking cameras. I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Thursday 1st March 2018. Coming up today we’ll talk about a battery teardown, and Škoda playing catch-up… HYUNDAI / KIA TRIPLE WHAMMY …but first, let’s talk about Hyundai / Kia and their electrification plans. Yesterday we heard about the Hyundai Kona, and 24hours later, there’s more reaction to the new model. Most of it has been about affordable range, which seems to have pleased most reviewers. The headlines of 64kWh battery, 7.6 seconds 0-60 and almost 300 miles range on WLTP ticked three important boxes. The Hyundai IONIQ is the most efficient EV I know of, going a long way on a modest battery, so although some say that the WLTP figure is still more optimistic I’m inclined to think Hyundai know how to get the most out of the package. The EPA range is definitely more realistic but here’s why almost 300 miles could be more accurate. The other big car release recently using WLTP range was the Nissan LEAF packing a 40kWh battery and getting 150 real world miles, give or take some either side. That’s using tried and tested battery chemistry. The new Hyundai Kona is their first to use the cells which are said to have made a step forward in energy density. We know the LG Chem technology also includes thermal management which the LEAF doesn’t. Maybe that range is realistic. And as for price, here in the UK the ICE version of the Kona starts at £16500. Most reviewers are saying £25,000 for the short range and £30,000 for the long range Kona electric, and then take off the £4,500 government grant, it starts to look like a very attractive option. The only issue is, you can’t buy one until the end of this year. Staying in the family, the Kia Niro Hybrid and PHEV has been spotted as a pure BEV. The hybrids are already great cars, using the same tech as the multi-drivetrain IONIQ models. And my final Korean update today is the Kia Soul EV, this time using (you guessed it) the Hyundai Kona and Kia Niro platform. It will be launched in the second half of this year and if you liked the sound of everything I just said, I think it makes sense to apply it to the Soul. The current soul has a 30kWh battery, so even the short range Kona battery is a big step up, let alone that 64kWh one. One thing I should say about all of the above, given the IONIQ uses CCS for DC rapid charging, I don’t think we’ll be seeing much morae of the CHAdeMo connector coming from Korea. https://www.carwow.co.uk/news/electric-hyundai-kona-price-specs-and-release-date-3891 https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidkiley5/2018/02/28/kia-niro-hybrid-could-be-legitimate-prius-fighter-and-ev-version-is-likely-on-the-way/#4148decb6738 https://www.electrive.com/2018/02/28/next-gen-kia-soul-ev-new-platform-2-battery-options/ ŠKODA PLAY CATCH UP Volkswagen Group has made a big deal out of its EV investment, but one of their brands not associated with EV’s is Škoda. However from next year Škoda will borrowing a few electric parts from their VW colleagues as the powertrain will be lifted from the Passat GTE. However the battery will be a larger 13kWh pack allowing 44 miles of range. If you have a 20 mile commute, you could drive most day’s emission free. And that’s as far as Škoda are going for now but, considering they’re able to go shopping in the VW parts store, I wouldn’t be surprised to see something built on the ID series. https://www.carscoops.com/2018/02/skoda-superb-phev-coming-passat-gte-powertrain-70km-ev-range/ WHAT DID THE ROMANS EVER DO FOR US? Yesterday I said on the podcast that Germany allowing cities to ban diesels might embolden others to do the same. I didn’t expect it in less than 24 hours though. The mayor of Rome, Virginia Raggi, said on Facebook that Rome is set to do the same by 2024. Two things Rome isn’t short on is Diesels and monuments. Around two thirds of cars sold are diesel, and around 3,600 ancient stone monuments are at risk from pollution. Rome follows fellow Italian city Milan which already announced a 2030 diesel ban. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2018/feb/28/rome-to-ban-diesel-cars-from-city-centre-by-2024-italy MORE MODELS NEEDED Writing in today’s Guardian, Adam Vaughan makes the case that the uptake of EV’s isn’t because of lack of chargers, but lack of choice in Europe. Here’s a question: have you heard of the Platform For Electromobility? No, me neither. It’s a group of 31 interested parties, from car makers, to charging installers to industrial groups. They include Tesla, Renault –Nissan and Siemens. In Europe there are 6 EVs per public charger and at the current rate of installation, will be more than enough until 2020. One of the report authors says: ““It is a myth that has been spread by the car industry to create the impression they would love to sell more electric cars but there just isn’t the charging points out there. It’s a smokescreen.” https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2018/feb/27/lack-of-models-not-charging-points-holding-back-electric-car-market 350KW MISSON-E CHARGERS On the subject of charging, how fast is fast enough? Porsche has long talked about their 800v 350kW rapid chargers. And now they’re installing them in all 189 Porsche dealerships in North America, as they prepare to sell the Mission-E. Charging that fast can add 250miles in 20 minutes but do you need to? It’s a difference between EV owners and those who drive ICE cars. Whilst EV owners know that 80s% of all charging is done at home – for some people it’s almost 100% - the last 100 years has conditioned drivers to think about running low on fuel before adding hundreds of miles of range, quickly, within a few minutes when they refuel. It takes a very short period of EV ownership to realise you just a behaviour shift. And ignoring arguments of how much better it is to always leave your house with a full tank, I think the biggest benefit of 350kW is the PR job they’ll do far more than how much they’ll be used. https://insideevs.com/porsche-dealerships-u-s-install-fast-chargers-mission-e/ IT’S WHAT’S INSIDE THAT COUNTS Have you got 96 minutes spare to watch a video of a battery being torn apart? That’s what a professor from Weber State University in Utah has done, taking apart the 60kWh pack from a Chevrolet Bolt. One of the insights which got internet commenters frothy was the nominal capacity being 57kWh, not 60, which is commonly quoted. It follows other teardown videos of Model S and LEAF batteries. You’ve got to REALLY love teardown videos to spend an hour and a half watching this. https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1115518_chevrolet-bolt-ev-electric-car-whats-inside-the-battery-teardown-video-shows-all CONFUSED CARJACKER And finally, a bittersweet story. We’d never wish this on anyone, but if you’re going to be carjacked, this is probably the best result. Last Saturday in Austin a man tried to hijack a Chevvy Bolt whilst the owner was waiting at a stop sign. Rather horribly the driver was then attacked and had to escape. However the hijacker wasn’t expecting an electric car and couldn’t work it. In the time it took for him to scratch his head, a witness ran over to help and the hijacker gave up, only to be found by police hiding in some grass. My condolences to the victim, I do hope he’s OK, and I hope they throw the book at the brainbox who can’t drive an EV. https://teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/threads/police-man-tried-to-hijack-electric-car-but-couldn%E2%80%99t-drive-it.109542/ Finally a reminder the Jaguar I-PACE Facebook live launch is 1pm Eastern time on Thursday 1st March, that’s 6pm UK and 7pm Central European. Thank you for listening today, I hope you've enjoyed it. We'd love to spread the word about electric cars so please do share this with at least one person who might be interested. Just a reminder you can listen to all of our previous podcasts on iTunes, Google Play for your Android devices, and most recently now on Spotify’s Podcast section. Whilst you’re there why not subscribe for free and then you get them automatically. It would really mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on iTunes which will help us spread the word to a wider audience about electric cars. Thursday 22nd February 2018. On the podcast today… you’ll hear about Mercedes Trucks doubting Tesla claims, and what about a drone coming to your rescue if you run out of energy… UK HIGH COURT RULES ON ILLEGAL POLLUTION, ELECTRIC CARS THE ANSWER? We’ll start with breaking news about air quality and what that means for EV adoption, not just here in the UK. In some ways this is similar to how California, because it’s such a huge car market, when they imposed strict emission limits the car makers made changes which benefited everything. Yesterday in London the high court told the UK government it must do more to tackle illegal levels of nitrogen dioxide pollution. For the last 8 years the UK has been in breach of the legal limits on pollution, and twice now have lost a court battle. Those we should thank are environmental lawyers Client Earth. Following previous defeats in court, the UK government had to promise to ban new petrol and diesel cars from 2040. Well specifically, all new cars from 2040 had to have a degree of electrification, it’s not a BAN on selling fossil fuels. That means hybrids would be acceptable. Mr Justice Garnham, the judge, said the current plan by UK Gov was “seriously flawed”. So what does that mean and what are the implications of this ruling? The government will have to go further and faster in their plans to adopt EVs. So that could mean bringing the date of the ban forward, say, to 2030. Or it could keep the 2040 ban and push it further, saying all new cars had to be full electric. That’s doubtful. However there are strict limits which must be reached by 2021 so it’s more likely the 45 local authorities will have to introduce emissions free zones, or Ultra Low Emission Zones, following the lead of London. That will lead to more negative publicity for diesel, further hurting sales, and inevitably increasing the adoption of electric cars. On the whole this is good news, but policy needs to be clearer and more concrete. Diesel sales will continue to fall off the cliff edge they’re on, however buyers aren’t moving to EVs quick enough, meaning an older fleet of dirty diesels is staying on the roads. With clear policy, companies can make the investments they need to in electrified transport. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2018/feb/21/high-court-rules-uk-air-pollution-plans-unlawful DAIMLER AG DOUBT TESLA CLAIM ON TESLA SEMI TRUCK TECH Next, the World’s biggest truck maker, Mercedes, has cast doubt on Tesla’s plans for their semi truck. Daimler plans to release their electric truck in 2021 called the e-Actros, following initial trials later this year. They will have a maximum range of 200kms, or around 120-130 miles, and will be investing over 500 million euros per year, starting this year. However the claims of Tesla seems to have ruffled feathers. According to Bloomberg.com, the head of trucks Martin Daum, is reported to have made comments yesterday to reporters including: “If Tesla really delivers on this promise, we’ll obviously buy two trucks -- one to take apart and one to test because if that happens, something has passed us by,” Daum said. “But for now, the same laws of physics apply in Germany and in California".
