Shoot us a Text. Its the last day of the month, and we're wishing all of you a successful day! Today, we're flashing back to the very first automotive ad, then bringing it back to the present state of Carvana's continued rise, an awkward recall involving Tesla hoods and Mazda's new logo.Show Notes with linksOn July 30th in 1898, the weekly journal Scientific American introduced the world's first car ad, courtesy of Cleveland's Winton Motor Carriage Company. The ad boldly proclaimed, “Dispense with a horse and save the expense, care, and anxiety of keeping it. To run a motor carriage costs about ½ cent a mile.”This pitch marked a shift from horse-drawn carriages to the dawn of automotive travel. Alexander Winton's brainchild promised a future of motoring convenience and ignited public curiosity, leading to a surge in orders and ultimately reshaping transportation history.Online used-vehicle retailer Carvana is expected to report a significant year-over-year increase in sales for the second quarter, with results anticipated post-market close on July 31.Carvana sold 91,878 used vehicles in Q1 2024, up 16% year-over-year.Analysts predict Q2 sales will surpass last year's 76,530 vehicles, with a potential 3% quarter-over-quarter growth, with William Blair analyst Sharon Zackfia adjusting her Q2 sales estimate to 98,900 vehicles.Increased inventory (+15%) and site traffic (+16%) are positive indicators.BTIG analyst Marvin Fong praises Carvana's business model, setting a share price target at $155.“While there's no way around the fact Carvana trades at a premium to most e-commerce and auto-related stocks, we believe [Carvana's] vertically integrated and in-sourced business model is simply a better mousetrap in an enormous automotive retail market that shouldn't be overlooked,” Fong noted.Tesla is recalling approximately 1,849,638 vehicles due to a software glitch affecting the hood latch assembly, impacting the 2021-2024 Model 3, Model S, Model X, and 2020-2024 Model Y.NHTSA warns the software may fail to detect an unlatched hood, potentially causing it to open and obstruct the driver's view, increasing crash risk.Tesla has issued a free OTA software update to fix the issue without requiring physical visits to service centers.Mazda appears to be the latest brand to flatten its logo, removing its previous texture and identity, as indicated by a recent trademark filing in Japan, which shows a new, streamlined design. The new logo retains the familiar shape and downward "M" within a circular emblem, used since 1997.The simplified logo was previously seen on the Arata SUV concept at Auto China 2024, and its uncertain if the new logo will appear on future Mazda models in the US.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

Show #427.   Can You Help Me Fight The Fossils? Read More About Patreon here EVne.ws/patreon   Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 27th March 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   FORD FIESTA, FOCUS MILD-HYBRIDS ANNOUNCED FOR 2020 IN EUROPE "Earlier this year, Ford announced it will electrify its every new model in Europe from the all-new Focus onwards, including new nameplates and upgraded versions of existing vehicles. After launching its first-ever hybrid wagon with the facelifted Mondeo, Ford of Europe is now announcing it will bring mild-hybrid variants of the Fiesta and Focus to [Europe]" according to Anthony Karr for Motor1.com US today: "the Fiesta EcoBoost Hybrid and Focus EcoBoost Hybrid will use a version of the 1.0-liter three-cylinder EcoBoost equipped with a belt-driven integrated starter/generator (BISG) which replaces the traditional alternator. The BISG will recover and store energy usually lost during braking and coasting in a small 48-volt lithium-ion air-cooled battery pack. The energy from the battery will be released during acceleration to provide torque assistance for a “punchier, more responsive performance, particularly at lower engine speeds.” Also, it will run the car’s electrical ancillaries."   https://www.motor1.com/news/315421/ford-focus-fiesta-mild-hybrid/   BYD REVEALS PLANS FOR ALL-NEW E SERIES OF ELECTRIC CARS Chinese automaker BYD officially launched the all-new “e” product series, which will be operated parallel with the “Dynasty” series. There are three sedan models and two SUV models under the “e” series to be rolled out in 2019. Besides, the automaker will start to accept orders of the BYD e1, the first model for the new series, on April 1." Reports InsideEVs.com: "Products under the newly-launched series are developed on the “e-platform”, a BEV platform unveiled by BYD at Auto China 2018. According to BYD’s planning, the “e” series is positioned as a provider of smart BEVs, focusing on quality, cost performance and new intelligent mobility life, and the “Dynasty” matrix, designed to be a forward-looking leader for the BEV era, more highlights technology guidance, car performance and experience."   https://insideevs.com/byd-all-new-e-series-electric-cars/   TESLA MODEL 3 OUTSELLS BMW 3 SERIES, MERCEDES C CLASS IN EUROPE "In its first full month on the market, the Tesla Model 3 shot to #1 on the European sales charts in its so-called luxury mid-size segment. That's quite an accomplishment for Tesla, the electric automaker that hails from California. Even more impressive is that the Model 3 isn't even available in the UK, as right-hand-drive versions have yet to be produced." Writes Eric Loveday for Motor1.com: "The focus here is on sales in the month of February. Those figures for Europe have just become final. So then, exactly how well did the Model 3 do in regards to sales? Well, it outsold some stiff German competition like the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. That's like a punch in the face to the German automakers right there."   Felipe Munoz, global analyst for Jato Dynamics: "As we’re seeing in the US, Tesla is also shaking up the European market. Its long-lasting impact will depend on how quickly the German premium makers, Volvo and JLR react to the arrival of the Model 3 to Europe and how quickly they can bring in their own midsize electric cars.”   TESLA MODEL 3 RIGHT-HAND DRIVE SPOTTED IN CALIFORNIA "A right-hand-drive variant of the Tesla Model 3 has been spotted recently in California. In a photo shared on Reddit by user u/Mr_Salty_Peanuts, a black test version of the midsize sedan is seen driving on I-280 with dealer plates. " reports Teslarati: "The sighting of the RHD Model 3 is good news, particularly for reservation holders in the UK in close proximity to locations covered by Tesla’s current European sales ramp, which only cover left-hand drive territories. Tesla’s online configurators generally open a few months prior to deliveries, meaning if the all-electric car maker’s predictions are correct, customers in RHD locations like the UK, Australia, and Hong Kong will soon have an opportunity to design their vehicles."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-3-right-hand-drive-spotted-in-california/   TESLA DELAYS DELIVERIES OF MODEL 3 WITH STANDARD BATTERY PACK Fred at Electrek picks up today on the case of the Standard Range Model 3 that isn't to be, at least not yet. "Many buyers of Tesla’s new base Model 3 with Standard battery pack starting at $35,000 are reportedly being told by the automaker that their delivery is being delayed. In some cases, Tesla is trying to upsell them."When Tesla finally launched the standard Model 3 for $35,000 last month, it promised 2 to 4 weeks delivery timelines to buyers. We have yet to see evidence of Tesla delivering any Standard Model 3 to date, but the automaker has delivered many Standard Plus Model 3, which was also launched at the same time. Over the previous day, Electrek has received several reports from buyers who had a delivery date for their Standard Model 3 after they have been told by Tesla that they couldn’t deliver the vehicle."   https://electrek.co/2019/03/26/tesla-model-3-standard-battery-delay/   AUDI A4-SIZED ELECTRIC SEDAN DUE 2023 TO FIGHT TESLA MODEL 3 "Audi is kicking its electrification plans into high gear with the launch of the E-Tron due to be followed later this year by its more stylish sibling, the E-Tron Sportback. These two fully electric crossovers will be joined by the Tesla Model S-rivaling E-Tron GT in the second half of next year, with a road-going Q4 E-Tron in the pipeline for a late 2020 launch." Reports Adrian Padeanu for Motor1.com US today: "the aforementioned E-Tron GT (pictured here) will be joined by a smaller sedan similar in size with the A4 to go up against the Tesla Model 3. The new zero-emissions model will ride on the same PPE platform as the E-Tron GT, which by the way will have approximately the same size as the A6 Sedan. the A4-sized EV is earmarked for a 2023 release. If that’s correct, it could mean we will see the production version as early as 2022."   https://www.motor1.com/news/315404/audi-electric-sedan-2023-launch/   COMEDIAN JAY LENO SAYS ELECTRIC CARS 'WILL BE THE FUTURE' USA Today have been talking to Jay Leno: "While Leno has a horde of well-kept antique cars in a custom-built bunker in Burbank, California, the self-proclaimed "big car lover" also has an affinity for modern vehicles with high-tech features." "I have a Tesla Model S. That's the future," Leno told USA TODAY. "I predict a child born today, most likely by the time they're 18, may not have ever ridden in an internal combustion car. I think electric will be the future." "It wasn't until recently with new battery technology that you get hundreds and hundreds of miles (on a charge)," Leno said. "I think we'll see a thousand-mile range pretty soon," Leno said about battery-powered cars.   https://eu.usatoday.com/story/money/cars/2019/03/18/jay-leno-electric-cars-are-future/3175820002/   BIG OIL PUMPS $1 BILLION INTO CLIMATE CHANGE LOBBYING, EXECS LAUGH ABOUT TRUMP ACCESS "Major oil companies have spent $1 billion on climate lobbying that is “overwhelmingly in conflict” with the Paris Agreement, according to one new report. And another report reveals oil execs laughing about their newfound access within the Trump administration." Reports Electrek: "While many oil companies have made a public show of their green energy investments, InfluenceMap reports that ExxonMobil, Royal Dutch Shell, Chevron, BP and Total have used more than $1 billion in shareholder funds since the Paris Agreement on “misleading climate-related branding and lobbying.” Catherine Howarth, chief executive of London-based responsible investment charity ShareAction: "InfluenceMap’s research confirms a widely held suspicion that Big Oil’s glossy sustainability reports and shiny climate statements are all rhetoric and no action. These companies have mastered the art of corporate doublespeak – by boasting about their climate credentials while quietly using their lobbying firepower to sabotage the implementation of sensible climate policy and pouring millions into groups that engage in dirty lobbying on their behalf.”   https://electrek.co/2019/03/25/big-oil-climate-lobbying/   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Friday 27th April 2018. IMAGE OF VW’S FIRST NEW PRODUCTION ELECTRIC CAR REPORTEDLY LEAKS But the top story today. According to Bild newspaper in Germany, and a story spread by Electrek, an image of VW’s first full electric car was leaked today. This is the I.D. - there were previously three were calling the ID, the ID CROZZ and the ID BUZZ. This now has a name, the Neo, and it’s the Golf-sized full BEV. It’s being put into production in 2019 as a 2020 model year. Why this picture came to light today is up for debate. Maybe a supplier leaked, maybe a member of staff at VW, maybe it’s a really good photoshop. Assuming it is a picture of a production / prototype model, as in something that’s further along than the concept, what does it reveal? Well it’s very similar to the concept for a start. The short stubby nose remains, as we’re seeing with EV platforms which are designed for purpose, and not mutating a design which was to have an engine up front. The front bumper now has one long, horizontal, open area running the width of the car and along the bottom of the front bumper, which looks like it’s to suck in air for cooling. Above that, as we’re seeing with designs like the Hyundai Kona or Model 3, there is no grill because there doesn’t need to be one. The bonnet rakes quite quickly up to the bottom of the windscreen, which stats low down the front of the car and is a big piece of glass, same as the concept, for lots of light. The side is pictured and that’s pretty conventional, and similar to the concept too, what we don’t see is the rear. The wheels on this picture look like the Model 3 Aero Wheels which some extra silver detailing, but basically the same for maximum range. It’s very simple, very true to the one you might have seen Johnny Smith feature on Fully Charged. I hope it’s a real pic because it’s stylish without being cutting edge. A reminder of the specs, and this could all change, but real world range of 400kms which would be incredible, and a price of £25,000 or $30,000. The Bild article, which is behind a paywall, does say VW want to bring it in at $5,000 less than a base Model 3. We recently heard of the double digit billion Euro contracts signed for battery and tech supply, the factories being retooled and investment VW are putting into their MEB platform for this, and other, EVs. There was a lot of cynicism on forums and comments today, and that’s understandable given dieselgate, but I think VW are too far down the road to be bluffing. Add that to the change at the top of the company with Herbert Diess now in charge, remember the man who came from BMW and responsible for pushing the i3 and i8 when nobody else was doing electric stuff, this looks like it’s real.   VOLKSWAGEN TO OFFER 48V MILD HYBRID VERSION OF EIGHTH-GENERATION GOLF IN 2019 Volkswagen will launcha 48V mild hybrid version of its Golf for the next generation, the 8th iteration of the car. Dr. Frank Welsch, Member of the Board of Management for Volkswagen Passenger Cars with responsibility for Technical Development said: “Electrifying conventional drives will enable us to further reduce consumption and emissions while also increasing dynamics and convenience. We are starting this extensive electrification campaign with Volkswagen’s best-selling vehicle to date—the Golf. Our newly developed, cost-effective 48-V mild hybrid will pave the way for introducing this type of technology to the mainstream.” “Volkswagen will combine the combustion engine with a 48-V belt-integrated starter generator and a 48-V battery. This combination represents the gateway to the future of Volkswagen hybrid models. The 48-V mild hybrid makes it possible to coast with the combustion engine completely switched off, thereby saving up to 0.3 liters of fuel over 100 kilometers. This mild-hybrid solution also offers much improved dynamics and convenience as a result of providing an electric boost upon start-up” says GreenCarCongress. It's rumoured that the new Golf will make its first appearance at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show And of course by staying at 48v that’s not high voltage, requiring most cost and those orange cables you’re used to seeing on EVs. However the downside of soft hybrids is no pure EV propulsion Given our last two stories, the ID and the soft hybrid Golfs, i can’t see a future for the current eGolf.   POLESTAR 1 WILL START AT $155,000 IN THE UNITED STATES News from the Beijing show, not about a car now, but about the price of one you already know about. That’s the Polestar 1. Plug in hybrid, and available online only, several website today put a $155,000 sticker price on it. But at the Geneva auto show in March, Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath told Autoblog that "Polestar will be subscription service, 100 percent", 2 or 3 years. So what I still don’t understand, why is there even a sticker price? Is it just to frame it so you know what kind of cars it’s up against?   IKEA FRANCE FORMS PARTNERSHIP WITH RENAULT MOBILITY IKEA has signed a partnership with Renault MOBILITY to offer its customers in France access to zero emission cars and vans. The service will help customers make their way home with their shopping by providing vehicles to hire by the hour” reports Fleet Europe: “the fleet will be all-electric by 2020. Renault MOBILITY envisages nearly 300 cars and light commercial vehicles being based at IKEA stores. Rates start at just €7 per hour, which includes insurance and 100km range. Customers access the vehicles via an app   PININFARINA DEBUTS K350 ELECTRIC SUV AND H500 EV SEDAN IN CHINA We talked last week about legendary designer Pininfarina, and now we’ve seen two models revealed at Auto China 2018. They are the H500 – that’s a concept for a full electric sedan, the interior features 4 single seats with adjustable touch screens for both front and rear passengers, as well as a touchscreen that slides on the door panels making it easier to share entertainment. The K350 however is an SUV that does look lovely, very modern, but all compact SUVs are starting to converge. equipped with the cutting-edge technology developed by Hybrid Kinetic Group for the traction system, with battery, electric motors with a power rating of over 300 kW, control unit and a range extender that enables a range of over 1000 km (620 miles) to be achieved.   MACK TRUCKS TO HAVE FULLY ELECTRIC REFUSE VEHICLE OPERATING IN NEW YORK CITY IN 2019 Mack Trucks, part of Volvo, plans to have a fully electric Mack® LR refuse model equipped with an integrated Mack electric drivetrain operating in North America in 2019. The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY), one of Mack’s largest customers, will test the demonstration vehicle in its highly demanding operations.   ELECTRIC TOYOTA C-HR REVEALED AT THE BEIJING MOTOR SHOW As I hinted to yesterday, was confirmed today at Auto China 2018. The Toyota CHR crossover was announced to be ready for China in 2020. It’s one of 10 electrified cars heading from Toyota to China. it’ll be the first full-EV on the firm’s TNGA platform, which also underpins the Prius hybrid and forthcoming RAV4   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Thursday 26th April 2018. BMW iX3 TO BE MADE IN, AND EXPORTED FROM, CHINA The biggest car launch today was technically a concept, but let’s report on it because it’s such big news. The massively popular BMW X3 is finally confirmed as being an electric model, the iX3. And equally as big news, it is set to be made in China and be exported to USA and Europe. And it’s very similar to the X3 apart from BMW playing around with the kidney style grill. It will enter production in 2020 and is the first example I can think of to be a luxury upmarket car made in China and exported. What happened to quality only coming from Germany? And BMW sell a lot of SUV in North America so it’s a calculated risk, and means a lot for their reputation. They already make the plug in Z1 in China. The iX3 will have a range of 400km which is 250miles, but there’s no direction on whether. For comparison the new 40kWh Nissan LEAF has a 150mile EPA range. And it’s a strong effort to go up against the Jaguar I-PACE, the Audi e-tron Quattro, the Mercedes EQC crossover due next year in 2019. So smart money is on a 70kWh battery pack, and they’ve confirmed 150kW charge speeds. The motor is a very reasonable 200kW of power. The platform will come with battery packs from 60kWh to 120kWh depending on the needs of performance. Electrive say: “The core of the iX3 is very compact. The fifth generation eDrive contains the electric motor, transmission and performance electronics in one component. A further novelty is the fact that the electric motor was designed without using any rare-earth metals. Added to this development, are the new battery specs, which have improved performance characteristics, range, size and flexibility, according to the manufacturer.”   NISSAN’S LEAF WHICH IS A SYLPHY A new car was launched by Nissan yesterday – welcome to the world the Nissan Sylphy. From the front it’s a LEAF, from the back it’s a pretty generic sedan, from the side, it’s a LEAF-and-a-bit on the back. It’s Nissan’s first EV built for China and yes it does share the LEAF platform. Based on the Chinese cycle it’s good for 210 miles or 340kms. That sounds to me like the 40kWh AESC batteries and not the new larger 60kWh LG Chem batteries, because surely that range would be higher. Given that the Chinese standards are more forgiving than the EPA. It does feature the e-Pedal technology which has everyone impressed. It will be on sale this year. But will we see it in the US? Will we see it in Europe like the BMW? Nope. I would expect it to be very cheap however based on comments from Carlos Ghosn that even their own Nissan LEAF is too expensive for the Chinese market.   VOLVO XC40 PHEV Volvo was the first major name to say all their cars will be electrified by 2019, and now they’ve said half of its annual, worldwide sales will be electric cars within 7 years. And a lot can happen in 7 years! 2025 is the year when China wants 7 million electric cars being sold a year that’s 20% of all sales. We’ve seen the XC40 T5 Plug-in Hybrid at Auto China 2018 in Beijing, in their No.1 market in China. It has a 1.5litre three-cylinder engine coupled with the electric motor, and of course can run on electricity only, but we don’t know how far. At the show Volvo are only showing off cars with plugs – those being the XC40, 60 and 90. Volvo’s owner Geely has developed the powertrain which is also set to be used in Lynk&Co models, and for Geely’s own models in China. Autocar say: “Three main drive modes will be available with the T5 model: Hybrid, Power and Pure. The first will work to most efficiently combine both parts of the powertrain, while power will maximise the output of both. The final will harness only the electric motor.”   HONDA EVERUS CONCEPT In Beijng Honda has shown off another concept, and another stunner. The Everus – a mass produced B segment car for the Chinese market. Again the show in China is being used to show off the body and styling without any firm details of the drivetrain but it’s due to be in the hands of customers this year, and built by a joint venture, as is the deal with China, with GAC Group.   TOYOTA WILL HAVE TO GET SOME PLUGS Toyota might be famous for running ad campaigns saying we don’t believe in plugging in our hybrids, but someone forgot to tell the engineers. That’s because the Corolla and Levin are being shown off at Auto China 2018 to be on sale next year, and a full BEV in 2020. A full BEV for Toyota? But only for China! It’s based on the C-HR compact SUV. The Chinese partner for Toyota is GAC. The plug ins are said to do 50kms on pure electric alone, obviously made in China. These are the start of 10 new models, and also a R&D centre in China, to move forward with pure battery tech.   NEW BRAND FOR VW Volkswagen has launched a new car brand at Auto China called SOL, and the first car under that, the E20X. And again it’s the lovechild of VW with a domestic maker, JAC. Like the Honda it will be on sale this year, taking same parts of the JAC iEV7S, running 186 miles on one charge, it has smart charging, self-parking and luxuries like parking cameras.   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Wednesday 25th April 2018. TESLA RACING SERIES ELECTRIC GT ANNOUCNE CALENDAR There are two exciting new EV racing series on the horizon, such as the Jaguar I-PACE series which will support Formula E. And also Electric GT which will be racing Tesla Model S P100DL’s. And Electric GT have just announced the calendar for their inaugural series after being officially approved by the motorsport governing body the FIA. There will be 10 races, starting in Spain on November 3rd, which follows a short test in October. Each event will be a mini festival of electric engineering, and the racing will involve a practice, a qualifying, a race and a dusk race. And that’s one of the great things about electric racing, you can do it at times when you wouldn’t normally be allowed with other series due to the noise pollution. They will race in France, Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, Silverstone UK and Portugal. It’s great they’ll be at circuits like Jerez, and Paul Ricard, the Nurburgring and Silverstone, and Formula 1 circuits with a rich heritage which will help give the series some gravitas with petrol heads, something I think Formula E will fix soon, because the city races are both great and also lack some heritage.   LAMBORGHINI AND PORSCHE JOIN THE EV PARTY Talking F1, former Scuderia Ferrari boss Stefano Domenicalli who now heads up Lamborghini says their next hypercar will be electrified. We are talking the Aventador and the Huracan. Full EVs are also on cards but not quite yet: “I don’t think that the technology for a full electric Lamborghini will be ready until 2026,” he said. “Hybrids are a step towards that.” Lamborghini’s technical director, Maurizio Reggiani, told Top Gear, “The big questions are packaging and weight. Yes, this will be a silent Lamborghini, but push the accelerator and the engine will come. Silence will only last for some seconds, then comes the sound.”   Next up another sports car, and the legendary Porsche 911, where electric power will be used for the very first time. Again it will be a hybrid perhaps with a new engine which might upset the Porsche purists. August Achleitner, director of the 911's development team, said: “Some fans rushed the barricades; it was all gloom and doom for many. And then the same thing happened as always: nothing. The new models have always received even more rave reviews than their predecessors. That encourages us to think about fundamental innovations in the future as well."   1,000 CLEAN AND CHEAP ELECTRIC BUSES FOR PARIS Cities like Schenzen already have all their public buses running on batteries, that’s over 16,000 buses like the BYD ones you might have seen. Their next plan is for all 17,000 cabs to be electric too, so Western cities need to catch up quickly. A sidebar here, whilst China is producing hundreds of thousands of electric cars and buses, our own media only want to report on Elon’s latest tweet. One day everyone will turn round and China will be making your next car, like they make everything else! Back to buses, and Paris will see 1,000 new full BEV buses, which is part of a larger plan to electrify all buses, by 2025. RATP has 4,500 buses to replace. Catherine Guillouard, president and CEO of RATP said: “The massive order to equip our fleet with electric buses demonstrates our ambition to become a vital player in the energy transition of the public transport sector. Our aim to ensure a 100% clean fleet by 2025 in the Paris region is what can only be described as a technological challenge that requires us to adapt our 25 bus depots within a very tight time frame. The entire company has been mobilized to succeed with this challenge”. Which is true, it’s a big job. One that some Chinese cities have already done – the buses, the depots, the grid upgrades, the on-street chargers to top up mid route? Yep, all done. Tomorrow on the show, I’ll take a deeper dive into the general state of electrified mass transport.   MITSUBISHI PHEV OWNERS NEEDED FOR RESEARCH Calling all Mitsubishi Outlander owners in the UK: “We are currently looking for owners/drivers of the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (purchased from new) for a paid market research event being held at a market research studio in Central London between the dates of Tuesday 08th and Thursday 10th May 2018. The project is being conducted on behalf of a major car manufacturer and we are simply interested in gaining feedback from owners regarding their experiences with electric vehicles and their ideas on the UK electric vehicle market. For anyone who takes part in a 1.5 hour discussion there is a cash incentive of £80.” I’ll put a link in the podcast notes if you’re interested. http://www.myoutlanderphev.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=41988   PLUG IN YOUR FORD F-150 The legendary Ford F-150 truck isn’t something you can imagine is an ideal candidate for being an EV, but they’re seen a way to reduce carbon emissions for customers. The trucks are built by Ford and electrified by XL, in addition to plug-in charging capabilities, the trucks' technology also uses regenerative braking during deceleration to charge the battery pack, and uses electric assist during acceleration to increase fuel economy. Eric Foellmer, XL's Director of Marketing said: “Because the XL plug-in hybrid electric system works seamlessly with the Ford drivetrain, it works and drives just like a factory F-150 would – but with a 50% MPG improvement and substantial reductions in CO2emissions".    60 NEW CHARGE POINTS FOR LIVERPOOL UK Liverpool in the UK is probably best known around the world for the Beatles, or these days, having a huge international following for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool Football Club. Or Soccer, if you like. But now it’s becoming famous for EVs as 60 more charging points are added as sites like hospitals, train stations, car parks, sports venues and even Jaguar Land Rover. John Robinson, managing director at Symphony EV-ZE said: “We are also currently working with Arriva to install infrastructure for the super-fast rapid charging points for their electric bus project for the Liverpool City Region.”   MERCEDES-MAYBACH EV REVEALED AT AUTO CHINA 2018 We’ve heard some whispers, and seen some teasers, now Mercedes-Maybach have shown off their luxury electric crossover – The Vision – at Auto China 2018. It’s an EV with four motors and all-wheel drive, and of course it’s a Maybach, so it’s the height of luxury. It’s a concept vehicle at this stage, which always means it’s technically capable of running on magical fairy dust, however Maybach assure us the specs are real. Those specs being 550kW or 750hp of power, with an 80kWh battery. They’ll build it with DC fast charging at 350kW for the elusive 80% charge in less than 20mins, or for slower speeds, induction charging also included. Because sometimes you’re just too posh to touch a cable!   RANGE ANXIETY HAD BEEN SOLVED In a recent media session, Nissan-Renault-Mitsubishi Chairman Carlos Ghosn said: "We have seen that consumers do not talk anymore about range or autonomy as long as you guarantee more than 300km. You could not have guessed this [result] through studies. When you look what are the electric Chinese cars that are selling, they are very, very affordable cars. The price point of the Leaf today is not adequate for the Chinese market.” His Renault Zoe ZE40 is marketed at 300km and the upcoming 60kWh LEAF with LGChem cells, and some thermal management to keep them at happy temperatures, will probably get over 350km on the new WLTP test cycle. That’s around 225 miles.   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. BEIJING MOTOR SHOW Auto China 2018, which opens this week, follows Beijing's decision to allow full foreign ownership of Chinese automakers in a move to make the industry more flexible as it promotes electrics” report CTV.ca: “That is reflected in the auto show lineup: Global and Chinese brands including General Motors Co., Volkswagen AG and Nissan Motor Co. plan to display dozens of electrics and hybrids, from luxurious SUVs to compacts priced as low as 152,000 yuan ($24,000). "There is huge potential for vehicle electrification here," said Roland Krueger, chairman of Infiniti Motor Co., Nissan's luxury brand. “VW is due to launch 15 electrics and hybrids in the next two to three years as part of a 10 billion euro ($12 billion) development plan announced in November. Nissan is unveiling an electric model at the auto show designed for China and will display the updated version of its LEAF and an electric concept car. The Japanese automaker also plans to develop a lower-priced electric with a local partner, state-owned Dongfeng Motor Co. Two more versions of that are to be sold under their jointly owned Venucia brand. China’s BYD Auto, the biggest global maker of electrics by volume with 2017 sales of 113,669 units, plans to unveil two new hybrid SUVs and an electric concept car. The company also plans to display nine other hybrid and plug-in electric models”   VOLKSWAGEN LAUNCH PIKES PEAK CHALLENGER The Volkswagen I.D. R Pikes Peak. As the name implies, this is made to tackle the world's most infamous hill climb. The car was unveiled yesterday in France before its first shakedown.  0-60 in 2.25 seconds, there is 500kW power, which generates 680bhp. It is all wheel drive and tops out at 150mph. That 0-60 time by the way is quicker than a Formula E or Formula 1 car. "As with the Volkswagen brand's production vehicles, fully-electric racing cars will also play an increasingly important role for us in the future," said Sven Smeets, Volkswagen Motorsport director. "The cooperation within the group really helped us, particularly given the tight schedule. For example, we received support from the Volkswagen battery plant in Braunschweig and worked together with the technical development department in Wolfsburg."   EXPERIENCED DIRECTOR FOR EV STARTUP  The Financial Times in the UK reported yesterday on former Opel CEO Karl-Thomas Neumann joining the directors at Evelozcity, an electric-car startup backed by former Faraday Future CFO Stefan Krause. It was last year when Opel and Vauxhall was sold by GM to PSA Peugeot Citroen. Before joining Opel he was an EV advocate at VW and wanted to move Opel into an electric era. Evelozcity wants to develop a "skateboard architecture" that different bodies can be placed on, and they see opportunities for personal cars, delivery vehicles and ride-hailing EVs.   PLUG IN HYBRID JAGUAR XE COMING There is a plug in version of the Jaguar XE coming soon, in a bid to take on the Plug In battle tot eh BMW 330e. The car’s powertrain combines a 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor, which also serves as the engine’s starter motor, to enable a limited range of pure electric running” says Sam Sheehan at Autocar: “The electrified powertrain will use a lithium-ion battery pack that comes as part of new 48V electrical architecture. The system is to be shared with the Range Rover Evoque PHEV from Jaguar's sister brand, Land Rover, as well as other models from the group.” Car makers are all trying to plug gaps left by the diesel sales falling off a cliff but for Jaguar Land Rover, Diesel was 90% of their sales.   BYTON BRING THE ELECTRIC STYLE TO MILAN Chinese EV maker Byton says they’re 85% production ready, after showing off their SUV at the Milan Design Week last week. Byton’s factory in Nanjing, China made it’s first protoype last week too. They are set to go on sale first in China in late 2019, before arriving in Europe and the United States in 2020. A recap on the specs: Battery: 71 or 95 kWhfor 250 miles (400 km) or 323 (520 km) of range Powertrain: 200 kW rear-wheel drive or 350 kW all-wheel drive Byton’s design chief, Benoit Jacob, says of the fledgling range: “We worked on the family from the beginning, and designed it so we can avoid re-engineering things every single time from an architecture and platform point of view. That means we can have a price point that is really attractive.”   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested.
