It's October 1963, and the 10th Tokyo Motor Show is underway. Toyo Kogyo's Mazda brand has had some success, but to prove its worth as an independent business to the government, Toyo Kogyo President Tsuneji Matsuda has hedged the company's future on a new, pistonless engine technology that many considered to be a fantasy. But soon, that fantasy would become a reality. How did Tsuneji Matsuda take Mazda from a small truck manufacturer to a respected car-maker during one of the most competitive times in history? How did they take an engine technology no one believed in and use it to save the company? And how did Mazda create two brand-defining cars in barely more than a decade? We'll find out today on Past Gas, in part two of our four-part series on Mazda. Thanks to our sponsors: Explore 2024 with Lectric eBikes. The most accessible and adventurous eBikes ever. The Tokyo Motor Show, now known as the Japan Mobility Show, has always been one of the most surprising on the circuit.Historically the launchpad for some of the wilder concepts the industry has seen, Tokyo has also represented something of a forbidden garden, full of of pocket-sized delights that preview new Kei car models that are soon to hit the streets.Once upon a time, we'd look at those cars and think “Cute…” and move on. Yet in a world in which automobility desperately needs new answers to the challenges of increasing urbanisation and increasingly limited resources, Japan's tiny car and sub-car concepts look more and more relevant. In this show, Joe and Drew survey the Japan Mobility show, covering the hits (Toyota's IMV 0, Mazda's Iconic SP, Honda's CI-MEV and Motocompacto) and the misses (Handa's new Prelude and every Nissan at the show). They also look at the opportunity that micromobility represents for Japanese automakers, and why it might just slip through their fingers. That's it for this episode! The Tokyo Motor Show was running on fumes before the pandemic shut it down for a few years, but it returned last month, renamed and reinvigorated. David Booth attended the Japan Mobility Show and on this week's Motor Mouth podcast he reports on what he saw, what he learned and what all of that bodes for Japan's automotive industry and the vehicles Canadians can expect to see in the coming years. In particular, Toyota made quite a few headlines, including the reveal of several all-electric concepts — some of which David says look production ready. Our man in Japan also did a deep dive with Toyota engineers on some fascinating hydrogen powertrain systems they are working on, and also experienced a bona fide manual six-speed electric vehicle transmission that he says could fool long-time petrolheads.

The 2023 Nissan Ariya crossover SUV is the long-awaited production model based on a battery-electric concept that was first displayed in 2019 at the Tokyo Motor Show. The Ariya's American launch was postponed until late 2022, based on COVID-19 concerns. And with that Nissan lost what could have been a strong competitive edge. In the interim, several other automakers have introduced new crossover EVs, leaving Nissan to play catch up. But having driven the all-new Ariya we can say with assurance that the vehicle is all it should be to compete in the segment, and a whole lot more. With coupe-like exterior style and an innovative and simply beautiful interior, the Nissan Ariya seems destined to find more than its share of buyers when it comes to market toward the first of the year. It leverages the learnings Nissan has gained as one of the mainstream electric-vehicle pioneers. And it takes those learning from the Nissan Leaf in an entirely new direction.Initially, only front-drive Ariya models will be offered, but later they will be joined by variations with the innovative e-4orce all-wheel-drive system. In addition to the choice of front-drive or all-wheel-drive, buyers will also be able to choose between long-range and standard battery arrays. Prices for the 2023 Ariya start at $43,190 for the front-drive Engage trim. Our test vehicle, driven at North American Car of the Year testing in Michigan, was a 2023 Nissan Ariya Premiere with an as-tested price of $58,850. Also in the road test segment, AOTR Co-Host Chris Teague took the 2023 Subaru BRZ sports coupe through its paces in the beauty of the Maine fall. The 2023 BRZ test car was powered by a 2.4-liter 228 horsepower “boxer” engine paired with a six-speed close-ratio manual transmission. (A six-speed electronic direct-control automatic transmission is optional.) Offered in two trim levels, The Subaru BRZ has a starting price of $28,595, and is a true bargain in driving fun. The BRZ's list of standard features includes a Torsen limited-slip differential; keyless entry, LED headlights, stability control with track mode and dual-zone automatic climate control. But the big question is this: Could it contain the six-foot-tall Chris Teague with his daughter in a booster seat behind him? We'll answer that question and others in this week's edition of America on the Road. This week our special guest is Mark Bole, who is Vice President and head of Battery Solutions for General Motors. His arm of GM is ready to deliver electric power, not just to your cars, but also to your home. And he'll tell that fascinating story in an interview with Host Jack Nerad in this episode.

The panoramic roof keeps the cabin light and airy, while pixel headlights provide maximum illumination at all times.   Norway - NOK 469,000 European Countries ~EUR 58,800 United Kingdom - £49,900   ENTRY-LEVEL KIA E-NIRO NOW ON SALE IN THE UK Up until now, the e-Niro has been available in a single, high specification model, but that now changes with an expansion of the line-up to include three feature rich versions named ‘2’, ‘3’ and ‘4+’. For the first time the 39kWh battery pack will be available to UK buyers.  The battery is capable of travelling up to 180 miles on a single charge. Available on the ‘2’ specification, the newcomer is priced at just £29,595, after the Plug-in Car Grant has been deducted (£32,595 without). It joins a pair of high specification models in ‘3’ and ‘4+’ grades that feature the high-powered 64kWh battery pack. A driving range of more than 282 miles on a single charge is possible, with the ‘+’ moniker symbolising that it incorporates an AC 11kW three-phase charger as standard, the first time that it has been offered on the e-Niro.   ‘2’ 39kWh £29,595 ‘3’ 64kWh £33,850 ‘4+’ 64kWh £36,145   NISSAN ARIYA TO BE UNVEILED ON JULY 15, 2020 "Nissan announced that the production version of its next-generation all-electric model, the Ariya, will be unveiled on July 15, 2020 in Yokohama, Japan. The Nissan Ariya Concept was shown at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show, hinting at a new dual-motor all-wheel-drive platform for the entire Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance." says InsideEVs: "For Nissan, it's a very important new model, which will be key to returning to the EV game, as the Nissan LEAF is no longer a top player these days."   https://insideevs.com/news/430687/nissan-ariya-unveiling-july-15-2020/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-articles   CADILLAC LYRIQ EV DEBUTS AUGUST 6 "We should’ve seen the Cadillac Lyriq by now. The automaker’s first fully-electric crossover was originally slated to debut on April 2 in Los Angeles, but coronavirus brought those plans to a screeching halt. Now – conveniently timed on the same day as Ford’s new F-150 debut – Cadillac wants us to know the Lyriq will arrive on August 6." according to Motor1: "It’s important to remind everyone that the Lyriq is technically a concept vehicle. Cadillac describes it as “not a concept but a precursor,” but the takeaway is the same. When the Lyriq finally breaks cover in August, it still won’t be the EV Cadillac you can buy in dealerships."   https://www.motor1.com/news/430832/cadillac-lyriq-ev-crossover-debut-august/   VW TRADEMARKS 'E-SAMBA' IN EUROPE "We first saw the ID. Buzz concept a few years ago, and have since been eagerly awaiting a production version, which we expect in 2022. We don’t yet have an official name for that production vehicle, but the folks at VW ID Talk forum may have uncovered a clue. VW has filed for the “e-Samba” trademark with the European Union Intellectual Property Office."So the “e-Samba” trademark could be the name of the new electric van. Or — and this is what we’re hoping for — it could be the name of a variant of the upcoming vehicle, perhaps one with a ton of extra glass or some other features to help capture the spirit of the original. It’s also possible VW doesn’t have specific plans to use the name yet."   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/06/25/volkswagen-e-samba-trademark-id-buzz/   BMW HAS INTERNAL PRESSURE TO BUILD ELECTRIC-ONLY PLATFORM "BMW is getting some internal pressure to build an electric-only platform and move away from the strategy to build cars with several different powertrain options on the same platform. In 2018, the German automaker unveiled its fifth-generation electric powertrain technology, which is first going to be used in the iX3 electric SUV. At that point, BMW hadn’t released a new all-electric vehicle in five years, and now two years later, the automaker has yet to bring another one to market." writes electrek: "However, we now learn that BMW is seeing a push internally to build a dedicated EV platform.  Manfred Schoch, chairman of the BMW Group Works Council, told Der Spiegel that the German automaker needs its own electric-only platform. Autocar is reporting that a 3 series electric is being tested as well with release expected in the 2023ish time frame. Will it be too late to challenge the Model 3 at that point?"   https://electrek.co/2020/06/26/bmw-internal-pressure-build-electric-only-platform/   TESLA SEMI JOINS DELIVERY TEAM "2Q 2020 is a challenging quarter for Tesla because the Fremont factory was temporary halted the production over a month due to the COVID-19. Nevertheless, seems like Tesla will show high rates that will surprise us because now Semi has joined the delivery team to bring vehicles from Fremont for the quarter-end push." says Tesmanian: "Twitter user @emanueIreyes posted photos demonstrating that Tesla electric trucks are loading up Tesla cars in Fremont. These impressive shots demonstrate that Semi is ready for full functionality. Despite the global crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic, Tesla maintains stronger-than-expected supplies thanks to, among other things, the dynamics of the Chinese market, which began to recover rapidly after the first quarter."   https://www.tesmanian.com/blogs/tesmanian-blog/tesla-semi-joins-delivery-team-to-bring-vehicles-from-fremont-for-the-quarter-end-push   HOW MANY CARS WILL TESLA DELIVER IN Q2 2020? PREDICTIONS ARE LOOKING UP "with the quarter coming to a close, Tesla cancels people's U.S. deliveries if they live far away from the Fremont factory, and instead delivers the cars to local buyers. This speeds up the process and allows the automaker to sell more vehicles before the quarter ends. However, it also means that paid reservation holders on the east coast are now waiting longer for a car." says InsideEVs: "Wall Street is predicting a 25% year-over-year drop related to Tesla's Q2 2020 deliveries. Analysts are forecasting 60,000 to 70,000 copies moved. However, Electrek reported that sources are saying the automaker could shock the world with a much higher number. The publication goes so far as to say Tesla may even be able to come close to beating its previous Q2 record of 95,000 deliveries."   https://insideevs.com/news/430969/tesla-record-delivieries-q2-2020-beat-wall-street/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-articles   QUESTION OF THE WEEK   How would you like to see Green Plates or Green Stickers used to incentivize EVs?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 231 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #792   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 28th May 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   VW MOVES FORWARD WITH FORD EV DEAL "Volkswagen said on Thursday its supervisory board had approved several projects in a multibillion-dollar alliance with Ford that was first announced last July. The German carmaker said various contracts between the two companies were nearing completion and would be signed soon." reports Autoblog: "Among the shared projects specified by VW are a midsize pickup to be developed by Ford; a city delivery van to be developed by VW; a larger commercial van to be developed by Ford, and a new electric vehicle for Ford of Europe, to be built on VW's electric vehicle architecture."   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/05/28/vw-ford-alliance-board-approval/   VOLKSWAGEN BECOMES BIGGEST SHAREHOLDER OF CHINA'S EV BATTERY MAKER GUOXUAN "Volkswagen AG has become the biggest shareholder of China's electric vehicle battery maker Guoxuan High-Tech Co Ltd with a 26.5% stake, Guoxuan said in stock exchange filings on Thursday. Reuters reported the Volkswagen is in final talks to invest in the Hefei-based battery company on Wednesday." according to Economic Times: "Volkswagen is also poised to buy 50% of Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Group Holding, the parent of EV partner JAC Motors, for at least 3.5 billion yuan ($491 million), the people said on condition of anonymity as the matter was private. Volkswagen is spending 2 billion euros ($2.2 billion) to expand its presence in China's electric car industry in the biggest foreign investment announced since the country's economy began to reopen following the coronavirus pandemic. The ruling Communist Party scrapped limits on foreign ownership of electric vehicle makers in 2018 to promote industry development. Beijing sees electric cars as a profitable technology where China can become a global leader. It reveals the Cybertruck's bed and Musk even walks on the cover to show off how strong the material is. " reports CNET: "Musk directs Leno to take the Cybertruck into a Boring Company tunnel. Apparently, this was the first time the hulking pickup made its way into the test tunnel, and luckily, it fit. After driving underneath Los Angeles, the elevator snags the Cybertruck and puts both gentlemen back on the surface without a single nick or ding. In the segment, he mentions the Cybertruck will probably shrink 5% for production to fit in a standard garage. The CEO tweeted this week, however, saying that won't be the case. Instead, Tesla might build a different, smaller truck."   NBC.com - Season 5, E510   https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/elon-musk-leno-drive-cybertruck-boring-company-tunnel/   UBER SENDS THOUSANDS OF JUMP E-BIKES TO THE RECYCLING HEAP "Uber has sent thousands of electric bikes to be recycled for scrap as part of handing operations of their Jump e-bike division to scooter-sharing company Lime. The rideshare giant said it would be too difficult to donate these bikes because of safety and liability concerns. A spokesman told CNBC “the best approach was to responsibly recycle them,” while video posted on Twitter from a North Carolina recycling center shows the candy red bikes being crushed as scrap metal." writes Engadget: "An Uber spokesperson told CNBC: “We explored donating the remaining, older-model bikes, but given many significan  t issues -- including maintenance, liability, safety concerns, and a lack of consumer-grade charging equipment -- we decided the best approach was to responsibly recycle them.” An e-bike without a battery is simply a regular analog bicycle; these bikes could be ridden as normal, even with the electronics still in place. The Japanese automaker will “right-size” its production capacity and streamline unprofitable parts of its business. Nissan will introduce the Ariya EV to the US in 2021, while most of its EVs will be sold in China. The company said that by 2023, it will launch eight pure EVs while expanding its hybrid technology dubbed e-Power." says electrek. "In the short term, only two of Nissan’s seven EVs will be sold in the United States: the Leaf and the upcoming Ariya. The Ariya is a high-performance, all-wheel-drive big brother to the Leaf, but there are few details and no firm commitments for a production date. We expect the Ariya to hit Japan in 2021 before arriving in other global markets. It will have a range of around 300 miles and will look like a toned-down version of the Ariya Concept unveiled at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show. Nissan is expected to officially unveil the production version of the Nissan Ariya in July 2020."   https://electrek.co/2020/05/28/nissan-will-add-only-one-new-ev-in-the-us-through-2023/   PASADENA OPENS EV FAST-CHARGING PLAZA "The Californian city of Pasadena is opening the Marengo Charging Plaza at 155 E. Green Street. The Plaza is now home to a total of 44 chargers including 24 Superchargers installed by Tesla and 20 fast chargers installed by the City of Pasadena." says electrive: "Over the past year and a half, the city’s utility company Pasadena Water and Power (PWP) has more than doubled the number of public EV charging points within the city. This represents the highest percentage of EV drivers among southern Californian utilities. In order to support the opening of the Plaza as well as take-away food services during the pandemic, the city’s 20 fast chargers are available to drivers stopping at the Plaza for 20 minutes for free. In unserer 31. Highlights include Olympic robots, artificially intelligent Lexus concepts, and some sort of self-driving broom that may or may not be Halloween themed. It's the stuff of Benjamin's nightmares!

Show #623   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 27th October 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Hi to Jon: “Hi, you've been talking alot about how ev's wil be more available after 01.01.20, this seems to be very true! All of the people who have ordered a e tron 50 in Norway have been told that the car has been delayed because of the test date for wltp has been poursponed from week 45 to week 49 insuring that no etron 50's get delivered untill after new year. Probably just to get a lesser c02 penalty next year. Cheap move by Audi since there are 50's that have already come off the assembly line. My order entered production earlier this week.”          Thank you to LEE BROWN for becoming an EXECUTIVE PRODUCER. And thank you to CHARLES FOX for becoming a PRODUCER.   TESLA SOLAR ROOF V3 REAL QUOTE SHOWS PRICE DROPPED BY 40% "Electrek obtained an updated Tesla Solar Roof quote from V2 to V3, and it shows that the price of the solar roof tiles went down by as much as 40% with the new generation." says Fred at Electrek today talking about one of their readers: "For a 9.45 kW system on a 1,862-square-foot roof, Tesla was charging him $64,634 for the solar roof, along with $10,050 for a Powerwall, and another $10,630 for roof and site repairs. That’s a total of just over $85,000 all in. The homeowner ended up not ordering the system, but Tesla has now updated the quote following the launch of Solar Roof V3, and it’s now much cheaper. Tesla is now listing the same solar roof system at $38,266 instead of $64,634 — a 40% reduction in price — and the total is down to $54,866:"   https://electrek.co/2019/10/27/tesla-solar-roof-v3-quote-price-decrease/   BORGWARNER EV TECH SHOWS UP IN ARIEL NOMAD EV DEMONSTRATOR VEHICLE BorgWarner, a company engaged in electrification on various fronts, unveiled an interesting new electric demonstration vehicle, which happens to be a high-voltage buggy. Meet the Ariel Nomad EV, an Ariel Nomad converted to all-electric drive" reports InsideEVs: "The Ariel Nomad EV is equipped with two High-Voltage Hairpin (HVH) 250 electric motors and eGearDrive gear sets (each one independently controlling a rear wheel) and a 30 kWh battery pack."   BorgWarner says: ""A benefit of the vehicle’s electrified powertrain is its improved steering response made possible through torque vectoring. This feature allows both forward motion and regenerative braking, delivering a dynamic and controllable driving experience. Another key technology is BorgWarner’s thermal-management system, which circulates coolant via an electric pump through the inverters and battery pack. The liquid-cooled, 350V 30kWh pack delivers peak power of 200kW."   https://insideevs.com/news/378600/borgwarner-ariel-nomad-ev-demonstrator/   FIRST ALL-ELECTRIC LEXUS TO LAUNCH IN 2020 "Toyota Motor’s (7203.T) Lexus will launch its first all-battery electric vehicle next year, as the luxury brand races to market a battery-operated car amid growing competition to develop zero-emissions vehicles, the head of the brand said on Wednesday." according to a Reuters article: "At the unveiling of a concept model of a futuristic EV hatchback ahead of the Tokyo Motor Show, he added that the goal is for sales of Lexus electric vehicles, including battery electrics and gasoline hybrids, to outpace sales of the luxury brand’s gasoline vehicle models by 2025."   https://www.reuters.com/article/us-autoshow-tokyo-lexus/toyotas-luxury-lexus-brand-plans-battery-ev-launch-in-2020-idUSKBN1X20FX   TESLA MODEL Y BASHED BY AUTO VETERAN "The Tesla Model Y is expected to be the company’s highest-volume vehicle yet, with Elon Musk noting during the recently-held third-quarter earnings call that he expects the crossover to outsell Model S, Model X, and Model 3 combined. Former GM vice chair Bob Lutz, on the other hand, has some doubts, and a lot of that has to do with the way the Model Y looks." says Simon at Teslarati.   Lutz: "The Model 3 continues to sell well. But the Model Y, I think it’s terminally ugly. I don’t know who’s gonna buy that. It’s another one of these humpback things like the Model X. It’s neither a sport utility nor a sedan, and to the extent it sells, I don’t think it’s going to break into a new segment. I think the sales will be largely substitutional to the Model 3"   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-y-ugly-bob-lutz-video/   NSW UNVEILS PLAN TO SWITCH SYDNEY’S 8,000 BUSES TO ALL-ELECTRIC "The NSW Government is seeking proposals to shift Sydney’s entire 8,000 strong bus fleet to an all-electric fleet in a landmark decision that marks one of the first tangible policies towards the state’s goal of reaching zero net emissions by 2050." according to thedriven.io: "NSW transport minister Andrew Constance says he will seek new contracts for the supply and operation of Sydney’s public bus system, a move that will open the door to electric buses and substantially reduce the environmental footprint of Sydney’s public transport network. Successful electric bus shuttle services have already been in operation at the Sydney and Brisbane airports, which confirmed the cost and reliability benefits of electric buses over traditional diesel buses. Electric buses represent an enormous potential for reducing the environmental footprint of the Australian transport sector, as well as providing a boost to Australia’s fledgling manufacturing sector."   https://thedriven.io/2019/10/28/nsw-transport-minister-wants-all-of-sydneys-8000-buses-to-go-all-electric/amp/?__twitter_impression=true   QUESTION OF THE WEEK   RAJEEV NARAYAN If the price was right I would strongly consider it, My Chevy Bolt is 2 years old now and has 61K miles on it and I have not once DC fast charged it. Many people may simply need a car to drive around town and don't need DC fast charging.   SACHA For frequent long distance trips, there’s no doubt  CCS or superchargers are a must but I think different people have different needs and as such not having CCS and just using AC charging might work for people with houses . If it means getting a vehicle for 10k or so it might be worth it (although is CCS circuitry really that expensive that excluding it is really worth it for manufacturers  ?) When considering resale it’s a different story however - a car with both AC and CCS has more prospective buyers and might retain its value better . Of course any EV is better than a fossil powered car so no complaints here either way!   BILL POLLOCK As you likely know our North American domestic Electrical service is limited to 110v on One pole or 220V on Two poles.  Typically we run only 30  amps on our 220V circuits but can go as high as 50amps for high-draw appliances (an induction stove for example) Our Level 2 chargers are 40 amps max, so our highest Level 2 charge is about 8kW. That's an overnight charge every time.   So...no, I will not buy an EV without 50kW DC level 3 minimum.   JOHN HARCOMBE I do not care what charger plug car has as  on average people only do 1 or 2 long trips per year where they have to charge away from home charger. The major issue that UK Government should be sorting out with Europe and rest of countries now before massive numbers of ev being sold is have one standard high power charging plug like 500kw that is bi-directional, meaning grid to vehicle and vehicle to grid. I see Japan CHAdeMO's and China GBT looking at a combined charger plug standard which are backward compatible.   MARK BUCKINGHAM Kia ora  Martyn, even though I have a Kona, yes just ac charging is fine depends on use case.  Also more importantly in 3 hours England is playing the All Blacks in Japan to get into the final and then of course to win the world cup!!    QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   Set by listener Martin Young: “What were some of your biggest surprises about living with a BEV?”   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 258 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #612   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 16th October 2019. BREAKING! TESLA MODEL Y PRODUCTION TO START IN Q1 2020 (UNOFFICIAL LEAK) From  Chanan at CleanTechnica: "Originally, the Model Y was supposed to start shipping in “late 2020”. Currently, Tesla’s website says new orders will ship in Q1 2021. However, according to an anonymous source with a proven and reliable track record, Tesla is about to accelerate its plans and start production in Q1 2020 at its Fremont factory. (We’ve also received the same information independently through a reliable second-hand source.). The Model Y will launch with the Long Range all-wheel drive (AWD) trim, according to this source, and Tesla will release the Standard Range Plus (SR+) version once production has been ramped up and the Model Y SR+ has a large enough gross margin. Another fun little tidbit of technical information we have been told is that the Model Y will indeed use the new revolutionary flex-cable circuitry that reduces the length of wires needed throughout the car and also gives every component a redundant connection to the battery and the computer. This makes it possible for robots to install more of the “guts and veins” of the car and cut down on the manual labor involved in installing cables. As Elon Musk has said multiple times, robots suck at placing normal cables into the vehicle."   https://cleantechnica.com/2019/10/15/breaking-tesla-model-y-production-to-start-in-q1-2020-unofficial-leak/   NEW PORSCHE MACAN EV TO GET TAYCAN PLATFORM AND TECH "first revealed by Autocar in October 2018. The new model will feature an entirely different bodystyle from the existing Macan to reflect its status as a reinvented model for the brand." says Ricahrd at Autocar: "Speaking to Autocar at the recent Frankfurt motor show, Porsche’s director of SUVs, Julian Baumann, confirmed that the existing, internal combustion-engined Macan will remain on sale alongside the new Macan during a transitional phase. The offering will broadly mirror that offered by the Taycan/Panamera duo. The electric Macan will arrive in 2021 and initially be a high-performance model in the mould of the Taycan, carrying the same Turbo badging to identify it as the top-of-the-range version. The current Macan will be offered alongside it partly because “some customers are not ready for EVs,” said Baumann. “So there will be two different cars.”"   https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/new-porsche-macan-ev-get-taycan-platform-and-tech   BASE PORSCHE TAYCAN HAS MORE POWER THAN A 911 GT3 "The Taycan 4S will be available in two battery sizes, but it's the larger 93.4 kWh two-deck 'Performance battery Plus' Porsche has detailed online. According to the Instagram post and a subsequent press release, the large-battery Taycan 4S will boast a peak output of 563 hp. Sure, that's nearly 200 hp less than the Turbo S. Even the standard-battery 4S gets decent power though, with a 79.2 kWh single-deck Performance battery giving it 523 hp in overboost state, meaning the cheapest Taycan money can buy still has more power on tap than a Porsche 911 GT3."   https://carbuzz.com/news/base-porsche-taycan-has-more-power-than-a-911-gt3   2021 AUDI E-TRON SPORTBACK SPIED UNCOVERED "Audi teased a camouflaged Sportback variant of the 2020 Audi E-Tron earlier this year. We expected we would see the car uncovered pretty soon after, but one of our spy photographers has caught it undisguised before Audi could reveal it." writes Joel at Autoblog: "It looks pretty much the way we expected. The upright rear of the E-Tron has been exchanged for a sloping fastback. The greenhouse looks quite a bit like the Audi A7 with a large rear quarter window. It also has fairly prominent roof rails that help maintain the E-Tron's crossover image. Everything south of the window line looks to be carry-over from the regular E-Tron. Mechanically, the E-Tron Sportback should be identical to the traditional hatchback version. That means two electric motors, one at each end, making 355 horsepower and 414 pound-feet of torque. Range will probably be close to the current model's 204 miles. We expect the official unveiling of the Sportback to come by the end of the year, possibly at the LA Auto Show."   https://www.autoblog.com/2019/10/11/2021-audi-etron-sportback-spy-photos   TESLA MODEL S PLAID P100D+ SPIED AT NÜRBURGRING "It appears that two Tesla Model S Plaid P100D+ prototypes have returned to the Nürburgring. Spy shots of the two vehicles acquired by Teslarati depict the two Model S doing runs around the iconic track with renewed ferocity." reports Joey at Teslarati: "The “Plaid” Model S that Tesla brought to the Nürburgring this time around were vehicles that had notable differences compared to the two units that took on the German racetrack last month. While the vehicles featured the same wide body kit, large air intake at the front, a rear spoiler, and track-optimized wheels and tires, the two Plaid Model S vehicles that were recently sighted feature new air vents on the front fenders. A blue Plaid Model S prototype is even fitted with a rear diffuser."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-s-plaid-p100d-spy-shots-nurburgring-images/   JCB SECURES FLEET DEAL FOR NEW ELECTRIC DIGGER From thecontructionindex.co.uk: "A-Plant has bought a fleet of 10 of the 19C-1E model in a deal worth more than £350,000. The 19C-1E - JCB’s first-ever electric diggers - are being produced at JCB Compact Products in Cheadle, Staffordshire, with orders rolling in from across Europe and North America. The model, which is five times quieter than its diesel counterpart, is expected to be popular with companies working inside buildings and in emissions and noise-sensitive inner-city areas."   https://www.theconstructionindex.co.uk/news/view/jcb-secures-fleet-deal-for-new-electric-digger   BP CHARGEMASTER CONTINUES UK CHARGING STATION ROLL OUT "BP Chargemaster installed four new 150kW rapid chargers at their retail site in Hammersmith, London. Their plan is to furnish their Polar charging network with another 400 units of the variety by 2021." writes electrive: "The chargers were powered up this week, following the UK rollout of their fast charging network across the nation. The first of the 150 kw fast chargers were launched in August, with the first two units installed at the retail site BP Cranford in Hounslow. Charging can be done with both CHAdeMO and CCS connectors, with a full charge possible in about 10-12 minutes of charging time"   BUICK LAUNCHES VELITE 6 PLUS MAV EV WITH INCREASED RANGE OF 410 KM "Buick launched the VELITE 6 PLUS MAV (multi-activity vehicle) electric vehicle in China." reports Green CAr Congress: "The newest member of the VELITE 6 family, the VELITE 6 PLUS has a constant-speed range of up to 410 kilometers (255 miles) under New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) conditions on a single charge. The original VELITE 6 MAV was launched in April with an electric driving range of 301 kilometers. As Buick’s first global all-electric vehicle and SAIC-GM’s first electric vehicle for the mass market, the VELITE 6 integrates resources and advanced technology from GM and SAIC for new energy and connected vehicles. It represents the latest application of the Buick Blue strategy. The capacity of the battery in the VELITE 6 PLUS has been increased to 52.5 kWh and its energy density has been increased to 140 Wh/kg, allowing it to store more energy with the same volume. Whatever the company has planned will be a totally new model. We're also in the dark on what form this vehicle will take, but it's a safe bet this will be a crossover of sorts."   https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/mazda-electric-car-interior-features-tokyo-motor-show/     GM OFFERS TO MAKE ELECTRIC PICKUP IN DETROIT, AS UAW PUSHES FOR MORE US-MADE GAS VEHICLES "GM has committed to building an electric pickup truck in Detroit in its ongoing attempt to negotiate a new contract with the UAW." says Green Car Reports: "Last Friday, Detroit's WDIV-TV detailed the latest in negotiations between General Motors and the UAW Friday as the two seek to resolve a contract stand-off that currently has more than 45,000 U.S. auto workers on strike nationwide.  As part of this latest round, GM has promised to build an electric pickup truck at the Detroit-Hamtramck plant, which GM had previously said it would shutter. While this would be good news for the UAW on the surface, a new EV line would likely not fully utilize the existing plant space, meaning GM would not be able to employ as many union workers there as it had in the past."   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1125520_gm-offers-to-make-electric-pickup-in-detroit-as-uaw-pushes-for-more-us-made-gas-vehicles   QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   How can we make up for the lost revenue from taxing fossil fuels?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 255 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. We're back for episode 119! This week, Matt's back, and he has a few thoughts on episode 118 that he was away for. Mitch kicks off the news with Koenigsegg breaking the zero to 400kph to zero record. We then briefly talk about the confirmation of the BRZ/86 Gen 2 concept coming to the Tokyo Motor Show. Joseph then talks about how since electric cars are coming thick and fast, which will be faster than basically any internal combustion engine available per price bracket, you shouldn't necessarily buy a supercar by performance, but by how it makes you feel. We then talk a bit of bollocks before we end the episode. Show #592   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 26th September 2019. Hello to new Patreon PRODUCER DOUG BUTCHER   Sign up to new petition online from Scott Edy. “Ban the advertising and endorsement of internal combustion engines.”   NIO PLANS DEEP JOB CUTS AS LOSSES PILE UP "Nio, China’s home-grown answer to electric-car maker Tesla, posted a worse-than-expected quarterly loss, triggering thousands of job cuts and exacerbated concerns that a bubble in the world’s largest EV market may be bursting." says Automotive News Europe: "The dire situation has prompted the automaker, which is backed by technology giant Tencent Holdings, to raise $200 million from founder William Li and a Tencent affiliate, and to plan the spin off some businesses. Its U.S.-listed shares dropped as much as 28 percent to less than $2 on Tuesday and are off more than 80 percent from their peak following last year’s IPO. Nio has accumulated about $6 billion in losses since it was founded by Li, who is also CEO, in 2014. Fire risks led to a mass callback of nearly 5,000 vehicles in June, a significant portion of the 17,550 units Nio had sold as of the end of May."   https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/nio-plans-deep-job-cuts-losses-pile   IN AUGUST, NIO SOLD ALMOST 1,800 ES6, BUT ES8 HIT ROCK BOTTOM "NIO is in the process of ramping up the production of sales of its second all-electric model, the ES6, while at the same time it tries to maintain sales of the ES8 seven-seater." says InsideEVs: "Last month, sales of the two amounted to 1,943, which is the highest result this year and third-best in the short history of the Chinese company. Year-over-year growth was 73%.  However, looking at the model results, we see a worrying decrease for the ES8: ES6: 1,797 (3rd month on the market). ES8: 146 (down 87%)"   https://insideevs.com/news/372544/august-nio-sold-1800-es6/   JAGUAR CALLS A HOT-RODDED I-PACE A WHEN, NOT AN IF "Michael van der Sande, the head of SVO, told British magazine Autocar that a high-performance I-Pace is more of a when than an if." reports Auto Blog: "The production model would receive more comprehensive changes, including a more powerful electric powertrain, but its body kit would certainly resemble the one worn by the eTrophy cars. Whether the hotter I-Pace would arrive as a limited-edition model, like the XE Project 8, or as a standard addition to the range is up in the air. Jaguar is aware that venturing into the high-performance electric car segment would force it to lock horns with Tesla, which offers jaw-droppingly quick versions of the Model S and the Model X."   https://www.autoblog.com/2019/09/24/jaguar-calls-a-hot-rodded-i-pace-a-when-not-an-if/   TRITIUM OPENS NEW PLANT IN LOS ANGELES "The Australian fast charging station manufacturer Tritium has opened a new plant in Los Angeles. Tritium now has expanded manufacturing and logistics capacities for the American market as well as a research and development department." according to electrive: "In addition, Tritium will introduce the High Power Charger RT175 with a charging capacity of up to 175 kW, specially developed for the American market and scheduled to be available from the fourth quarter of this year. The RT175 charging station is based on the Veefil PK concept, which is used throughout Europe by Ionity, for example. Recently, Tritium refitted its chargers at Ionity charging sites with liquid-cooled cables that will enable charging capacities of up to 350 kW. The Australian company also presented its  latest high power charging system at Cenex-LCV in the UK this September. The system for commercial use is scalable and capable of charging an electric vehicle with 475kW."   https://www.electrive.com/2019/09/24/tritium-opens-new-plant-in-los-angeles/   VW CHAIRMAN AND CEO ACCUSED OF STOCK MARKET MANIPULATION "Volkswagen Group is under new scrutiny as German prosecutors charge two top bosses with stock market manipulation. Prosecutors allege VW Group CEO Herbert Diess and Chairman Hans Dieter Poetsch failed to promptly inform investors about the Dieselgate scandal according to Automotive News." says Motor1.com: "The new charges are just the latest development in the years-long scandal that has rocked the iconic automaker and has led to billions in fines for the company and its subsidiaries. Prosecutors also charged former CEO Martin Winterkorn in the case. Lawyers for both Diess, who will remain as VW’s CEO, and Poetsch say neither could have predicted the scandal’s financial impact on the company. Diess joined the company in July 2015, months ahead of the scandal breaking in September when the automaker admitted it’d installed software on 11 million vehicles to cheat emissions testing, racking up $33 billion (€30 billion) in fines and expenses so far, according to the publication."   https://www.motor1.com/news/372588/volkswagen-accused-stock-manipulation/   TESLA CEO ELON MUSK GIVES VW CEO KIND WORDS "Despite allegations made by the EPA regarding the German automaker, Musk gave Diess his support as a response to an article written by Bloomberg‘s Chris Bryant, who said that the VW executive should win an award for “Worst Sense of Timing.” This comes just a few weeks after the Tesla CEO trolled Volkswagen for cheating on emissions testing." picked up by TEslaratI: "“Herbert Diess is doing more than any big carmaker to go electric. The good of the world should come first. For what it’s worth, he has my support,” Musk said on Twitter.   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-elon-musk-kind-words-vw-ceo-sustainability/   TESLA MODEL 3 IS THE BEST-SELLING CAR IN NORWAY IN 2019 BY FAR "Tesla’s (TSLA) Model 3 has become the hot-selling car in Netherlands, with year-to-date sales crossing 10,000 units. Undeniably, this figure is massive. This seems to be an impressive feat for a model that started delivery since February 2019. Not many vehicles manage to sell this much even in a year. Reportedly, Model 3 was the third best-selling vehicle in the country in the January-August period, just behind Volkswagen’s VWAGY Polo and Ford’s F Focus." reports Yahoo! Finance "In the Norwegian market, Tesla Model 3 is the hottest-selling car, that too by a large margin. With around 12,000 units sold in Norway so far this year, Tesla’s Model 3 sales have been more than double than Volkswagen Golf, which is in the second spot. Notably, Netherlands and Norway have always been a big market for Tesla, even before Model 3 hit the roads. But with the launch of Model 3, Norway and Netherlands are much ahead in the EV game in Europe."   https://finance.yahoo.com/news/teslas-tsla-model-3-takes-152003025.html   MAZDA CONFIRMS IT WILL PRESENT FIRST PRODUCTION EV IN TOKYO "Mazda confirmed this Wednesday (September 25) that it will present its first EV at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show. Not only that: It will be the company’s first production EV." according to InsideEVs: "The e-TPV has a small battery pack of only 35.5 kWh. For you to have an idea, it has the exact same size as the one that the Honda E uses. The new Mazda PHEV will have a rotary engine as its internal combustion unit. At least this is what the carmaker told the journalists that drove the e-TPV."   https://insideevs.com/news/372762/mazda-ev-debut-2019-tokyo-motor-show/   MG EXTENDS CUSTOMER OFFER AFTER SECURING 2,000 ORDERS FOR ZS EV MG Motor UK has secured 2,000 orders for its affordable electric SUV, the ZS EV, in just two months since launch. In light of this success, the brand has introduced a new offer for the next 1,000 retail customer orders, continuing to match the government’s plug-in car grant for the ZS EV Exclusive version. With the MG grant of £3,500 for the range-topping ZS EV Exclusive on top of the government’s own £3,500 plug-in car grant, customers benefit from an outstanding overall price from just £23,495. ZS EV Excite benefits from a new £3,000 MG Grant which, when paired with the government grant, results in an overall price from just £21,995.   https://electriccarsreport.com/2019/09/mg-extends-customer-offer-after-securing-2000-orders-for-zs-ev/   EDF SAGS UNDER THE WEIGHT OF HINKLEY POINT FIASCO "You may remember Thomas Piquemal. He resigned as chief financial officer of Electricite de France (PA:EDF) three years ago after warning that the French government’s determination to have EDF build the Hinkley Point C reactor in south-west England could bankrupt the company." writes Yahoo! Finance: "EDF warned of yet more overruns to the project. It now expects up to $3.6 billion in additional costs and warned that it’s more likely than ever that the project will be delayed. EDF was worth 107 billion euros back in 2010 when the British government announced the sites where it wanted to build a new generation of nuclear plants. It’s now worth 30 billion ($33 billion). The U.K. guaranteed EDF a price of 92.50 pounds per megawatt-hour for Hinkley Point C in 2012. Last week, it auctioned offshore wind power projects at a strike price of as low as £39.65/MWh."   https://finance.yahoo.com/news/stockbeat-edf-sags-under-weight-061700361.html?.tsrc=rss     QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   What do you want to hear on this podcast? Gears and Beers: The Unashamedly Unprofessional Automotive Podcast

We are back for episode 117, and this week it's a bit off the rails! We start off briefly about talking about Joseph's written review of the Toyota Corolla Hybrid Ascent Sport We then talk about drifting, before breaking into a bit of news (and a semi-rant from Mitch) regarding the new Land Rover Defender, after the lead engineer saying that it's "daft" for the Defender to have a manual. Joseph has a bit of news about the Mitsubishi ASX getting a Triton facelift and a 2.4L engine option, we then talk about CVT's for a bit. Mitch then talks about the Tesla Vs. Porsche Nurburgring war. Joseph talks about the car news rumour-mill saying that Toyota/Subaru might show a GT86 Second Generation at Tokyo Motor Show, and we theorise about the MR2. Then we talk about tyres, and tyre technology, and how far even the Bob Jane Special's have come in recent years, and then we talk about whether 'Australian Made' is as important today as it has been in the past, and we talk about Chinese-made for a while. We then finish off last week's questions we received on Facebook, and run out of time to play a game. Show #582   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 16th September 2019. From @TryEV: "We're celebrating the world car-free day! This Saturday in Hammersmith and Fulham, North End Road we will be showcasing the latest electric motorcycles. We would love to see you there!"   From Twitter user Vincent: "Tesla’s V10 software update started to rollout for the owners in the early access program. "   WHAT’S IN AND OUT OF TESLA V10 DETAILS "On viewing the now widely published partial release notes, it appears that only information about gaming, streaming and other various improvements including the ability to delete old Sentry videos and turn down the volume of vehicle alerts (a valuable addition for parents with sleeping children in the car). But notes on higher level features, such as Smart Summon, viewing Sentry videos and improved intersection recognition, that were confirmed for the V10 release by CEO and founder Elon Musk in July, are absent from the leaked notes." reports Driven website.   Tesla Theater   Tesla Theater lets you watch movies and videos when your car is in PARK and connected to WiFi. To launch the Tesla Theater, tap the new ‘Entertainment’ Icon in the Application Launcher and select the Theater tab.   Caraoke   Sing karaoke to your favorite songs and artists in your car. You can select ‘Caraoke’ from the Media menu. Tap the microphone icon to adjust whether the vocal track plays while you sing along.   Cuphead (Tesla Edition)   Cuphead is a classic run and gun action game inspired by cartoons of the 1930s and heavily focused on boss battles. For the Tesla Edition of Cuphead, enjoy the game’s full first Isle as you play as Cuphead or Mugman (in single player or in local co-op). Traverse strange worlds, acquire new weapons, learn powerful super moves, and discover hidden secrets while you try to pay your debt back to The Devil!   Feeling Lucky or Hungry   Feeling lucky or feeling hungry? Go on a surprise adventure to a nearby attraction by tapping Navigate > Lucky or get directions to a local restaurant chosen by your Tesla by tapping Navigate > Hungry. We have also updated the place popup to include easy access to a website associated with the location if one exists.   Joe Mode   Enabling Joe Mode reduces the volume of your Tesla’s chimes. The quieter chimes continue to alert the driver effectively and minimize disruption to passengers (e.g. Joe’s kids). To enable Joe Mode, tap Controls > Safety & Security > Joe Mode.   Improved Driving Visualisation   The driving visualization has been improved to display additional types of objects and lane lines around your car in more environments.   Additionally, you can drag and pinch the driving visualization to temporarily adjust view angles and zoom. After a short of inactivity, the visualization will return back to the default position.   Automatic Lane Change Visualisation   The automatic Lane Change visualization has been improved to highlight where in the adjacent lane your car is planning to move to. When Automatic Lane Change is initiated, the adjacent lane is highlighted blue and the target car destination is outlined in white.   Maps Improvement   We have improved maps to make it easier to find and navigate to where you want to go. When searching for a destination, the autocomplete search now includes the distance to each suggested place. Also, you can now directly tap the labels on the map to quickly view the associated place details and navigate to that destination.   Sentry Mode Improvement   Sentry Model video clips are now saved in a separate folder on your USB drive to make them easier to review and manage. Also, the older Sentry model video clips will now be automatically deleted if there is not enough space on the USB drive and Sentry Mode clips are using more than 5 Gigabytes of space.   Software Update Improvement   The software update experience now has more style and grace. You will now know which software update version is being downloaded and to be installed. Also, once the software update has been initiated, you can view the install progress when the touchscreen is on.   App Launcher   The application Launcher has been reordered to make it easier to launch the Phone App. We have also replaced the Tesla Arcade with Tesla Entertainment. Ted Cannis, Global Director, Electrification, Ford Motor Company: "It’s a question we get all the time. Early on when I started in this position, my family asked me this same question. Nope, no gas. The truth is that when you drive an electric vehicle, you may never have to stop at a gas station again (except if you want beef jerky). In research clinics, I sat down with many electric vehicle owners in diverse places like California, China and Germany. You learn one thing very quickly: Among most owners, all their charging is done from the convenience of their home. Many have never visited a public charging station at all. Similarly, surveys of U.S. battery electric vehicle owners show that 80 percent of charging occurs at home, followed by charging at work. For owners of gas or hybrid vehicles, we know it’s hard to break the habit of going to a gas station once or twice a week — most of us have been doing it without hesitation for decades. But how would you feel about never going to a gas station again?"   https://medium.com/live-electric/education-is-a-critical-missing-piece-to-the-electric-vehicle-puzzle-heres-how-ford-is-going-to-3bfd9c95bd28   TESLA ‘PLAID’ MODEL S CRUSHES PORSCHE TAYCAN’S NÜRBURGRING TIME, WITNESS SAYS "Tesla’s testing of new Model S vehicles, including a 3-motor ‘Plaid’ Model S, continues at the Nürburgring racetrack and now a witness says that Tesla already crushed Porsche Taycan’s time." says Fred at Electrek: "Nonetheless, it’s clear that Tesla wants to push those vehicles to their limits on the demanding racetrack and according to German car magazine Auto Motor und Sport, they brought Nordschleife expert Thomas Mutsch, amongst others, to drive the cars. The outlet received word of the forthcoming vehicle from Mazda spokesperson Yoshikazu Nagai, which was confirmed to Motor1.com by a spokesperson from Mazda USA." says Motor1.com: "The vehicle is currently in a development stage, and its underpinnings are covered by a modified Mazda CX-30 body wearing camouflage that bears the words “Mazda e-TPV”. Nevertheless, the vehicle debuting in Tokyo is a new model and will have no relation to the CX-30. The EV will reportedly rely on a 141-horsepower electric motor for motivation. A relatively small 35.5-kilowatt-hour battery pack will supply power to the motor. To combat the battery pack's limited range, Mazda will also offer the electric vehicle with a range extender option to quell the needs of North American buyers, per Automotive News. EV News Daily - Electric Car Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 20, 2018 11:39

Wednesday 21st February 2018. On the podcast today… coming up we’ll talk about electric hyper cars and we’ll pick on Australians, but just a little.   We’ll start with news about a possible new commercial vehicle, now stay with me because this isn’t a sexy way to start. I promise the next story will be all speed and smoke and wheel spin. I think commercial vehicles are really important to electrify because they do a lot of miles in places where pollution is high.   Your own car might sit on the driveway or outside work for most of the day, whereas a working vehicle is always on the go. This is also really important for last mile situations, around cities, where pollution levels are so high they cause respiratory disease.  Now, have you seen the new London black cab?   If not, pause this and go and watch the Fully Charged episode recently. And I know I keep talking about Jonny Smith – I promise I don’t want to kiss him. Much.   However Chinese EV owner Geely have ploughed hundreds of millions into the range-extended new Black Cab, which costs just £10 more a week to lease but saves you £100 in fuel. No brainer. Now Geely want to use the platform and powertrain to change the taxi dimensions into a van, add a passenger seat up front, and bring it to market.   Spy spots featured on Motor1.com show it heavily camouflaged but with the unmistakeable front end. According to them the conversion is costing $42million which is small change in terms of bringing releasing a new vehicle.   https://www.motor1.com/news/233531/london-taxi-testing-commercial-vehicle/   Next I promised something faster than a van. What about a Koenigsegg? Maker of insane sport cars from the mad hypercar brain of Christian von Koenigsegg. They have a new plug-in hybrid called the Regera which he says is “on the bleeding edge of EV technology”.   According to leftlanenews he was so impressed by the instant torque of a Model S, he incorporated batteries into the drivetrain of his next hypercar. Yes it comes with a dirty 5.0 liter V8 but also three motors, and electric acceleration up to 30mph. He says it’s probably the most advanced EV in the world, but doesn’t get the headlines for being so because of the ICE. The battery pack is only 70 kilos but helps generate 700bhp. As for a full electric version, he says “that technology is getting better and better very rapidly”.   https://www.leftlanenews.com/koenigsegg-expects-to-build-all-electric-car-eventually-99943.html   Mitsubishi are making a moderate upgrade to a very important car. The new Outlander PHEV will be available from autumn and it has been a huge success for those wanting to add electrons to dino juice.   They’ve sold 100,000 of them in Europe, and 140,000 worldwide. For the new model they’re increasing battery performance by 15%. But there’s not need to brace yourself, in real numbers, that’s a battery pack going from 12kWh to a dizzy 13.8kWh. However it’s welcome, it’s a popular car, and it’s very handy to plug in to the growing CHAdeMO fast chargers. Although suggesting a PHEV using one might get me hate mail.   https://www.electrive.com/2018/02/20/mitsubishi-presents-new-outlander-phev-suv-concept/   However Mitsubishi want to show they’re serious about full electric cars, so fresh from the Tokyo Motor Show they’re heading to Geneva Motor Show with the e-EVOLUTION concept which will lay out their direction and thinking. 4 wheel drive, three motors, and electronically controlled torque vectoring – which I’ve no idea what that is, but I definitely need it in my life.   https://insideevs.com/new-2019-mitsubishi-outlander-phev-with-15-more-battery-capacity/   Talking of Geely earlier, according to GasGoo.com they’re introducing 20 new energy vehicles by 2020. Just to put that in perspective, that’s 22 months away. They’ll practically release a new model a month and everyone is so used to the pace of EV news lately, it’s not even front page news. In fact it got trumped today by a VAN to be top story! In 2018 watch out for the Emgrand EV 450 and the Emgrand PHEV, as long as you’re in China of course. They say two thirds of their range in the future will he plug ins or hybrids, and around a third will be pure electric cars.   http://autonews.gasgoo.com/new_energy/70013721.html   The first of two stories about oil now, and tomorrow in Germany, their top court could hand down a landmark ruling on Diesels, which will accelerate EV growth there. The environmental group DUH sued Stuttgart and Dusseldorf over levels of particulates.   Local courts ruled the worst diesels could be used on heavy pollution days, which the German states appealed against. So tomorrow we’ll hear if the ban stands, and if so, could wipe huge values off diesel cars, the diesel makers and inspire more people to drive electric.   https://www.autoblog.com/2018/02/19/german-court-diesel-bans-car-value/   Secondly BP (British Petroleum) have released their annual Energy Outlook report. They say travel demand will double by 2040 mainly due to increases in personal mobility in China and India. BP predict todays 3million EV’s will grow to 320million by 2040, which would be 15% of the worldwide fleet of cars. And shared mobility will accelerate that, because self-driving cars will be electric thanks to lower cost of maintenance and ability to recharge themselves via wireless charging. In 2016 the total fuel demand from cars was 18.7million barrels of oil per day which is one fifth of total oil demand. BP also predict electric cars will be driven 2.5x more than ICE cars.   https://uk.reuters.com/article/us-oil-bp/bp-sees-self-driving-electric-vehicles-crimping-oil-demand-by-2040-idUKKCN1G41XK   Finally, if you listen to an EV podcast I’m guessing you’re a fan. But so this isn’t a little echo chamber with you and me banging battery drum, let’s take a look at today’s Sydney Morning Herald. They point out that all is not well with EV’s because they’ve done some maths.   Charging your electric car from the grid in Australia means a Tesla (the paper doesn’t say which model, does it matter? Maybe not) would emit 168 grams of CO2 per km, versus a Toyota Corolla at 178 grams, a Renault Zoe at 121 grams and a Toyota Prius at 84 grams per km. But let’s look at that – charging from the grid. Because those numbers seem way too high. And you what? They are. Because your grid, and I’m talking to any Aussies listening, is disgusting.   The average greenhouse gas intensity is 910kg of CO2 per MWh. That’s insanely high. Are you literally just burning whatever you can lay your hands on? Australia is one of the sunniest countries on the planet why don’t you all have solar panels? You see them everywhere where in the UK, a country that officially has 5 sunny days per year. Every other day it’s cloudy and it rains. And we still have solar. The UK grid intensity for Summer 2017 was 216 kg CO2/MWh.   Get some solar Australia! It’s what you’re good at. Take Norway, or Iceland, or Paraguay, they all have grid intensity

We couldn't start this week without first talking about the Tokyo Motor Show. We discuss the Sports EV and Urban EV concepts from Honda, the BRZ STI and briefly the S208 WRX STI, the cool new Volkswagen Up! GTI, and the 10th Anniversary edition of the Lexus RC-F. We briefly talk about the blue Stinger GT we checked out in a Kia dealership after the podcast last week, which neatly transitions into a tangent. We talk about Yokohama reviving their HF type D from the 1980's specifically for older vehicles with smaller wheels which are harder to find tyres for. We then discuss the possibility of the Nissan Titan being converted to RHD and may be sold in Australia. We play the fan favourite 'What About This Car', which suprisingly all agree is a cool car... Which spurs an argument about the Panda car craze. Then Joseph introduces a new topic, which should continue to be a fun one.Like us on
