GM wouldn't give details about where it will build the new plants, but Chief Financial Officer Paul Jacobson said they would be similar in size to two factories now under construction in Lordstown, Ohio, and Spring Hill, Tennessee. Those factories each will employ more than 1,000 workers and cost about $2.3 billion." writes Autoblog: "The new plants were to come later in the decade, but now are expected to be in operation around 2025. They are part of GM's plan to spend $35 billion on electric and autonomous vehicles from 2020 to 2025. The company also said it will switch more U.S. assembly plant capacity to electric vehicles, but gave no details Wednesday." The NY Times said: "G.M. this year introduced an updated version of its electric car, the Chevrolet Bolt, that can travel farther on a full charge and has added to roomier version of the same car. A battery-powered GMC Hummer pickup truck is set to go into production late this year and is supposed to be followed by more than 20 electric models over the next four years. The company did not say where the two additional battery plants would be built. It is building them in a joint venture with the South Korean manufacturer LG Chem." https://www.autoblog.com/2021/06/15/gm-to-boost-spending-on-electric-cars-30-add-two-new-battery-plants/ https://www.nytimes.com/2021/06/16/business/gm-electric-vehicle-battery-plants.html?referringSource=articleShare VOLVO TO PRODUCE NEW POLESTAR 3 ELECTRIC SUV IN SOUTH CAROLINA"Volvo plans to produce a new premium SUV for its electric Polestar brand at a plant in Charleston, South Carolina, the company said Wednesday. Volvo is investing $118 million for production of the Polestar 3 at the South Carolina plant. The vehicle is expected to go into production in 2022. It will have the same platform as the next-generation Volvo XC90, which also will be produced at the plant." says CNBC: "Polestar currently operates in 13 countries, with plans to sell tens of thousands of vehicles globally." https://www.cnbc.com/2021/06/16/volvo-to-produce-new-polestar-3-electric-suv-in-south-carolina.html AUDI BORROWS AN OLD TESLA PERK"Audi is leaving nothing to chance when it comes to the 2022 e-tron GT and potential luxury car buyers being scared off by EV charging, inking a new agreement for free public top-ups. The agreement will see all 2022 Audi e-tron GT buyers get three years of complimentary DC fast charging at Electrify America stations across the US." reports Slashgear: "There are currently more than 600 public charging stations in that network, and the e-tron GT will be able to tap speeds of up to 270 kW. That's the equivalent of taking the sports EV from 5-percent to 80-percent in around 22 minutes, or approximately 180 miles of range. By the end of the year, meanwhile, Electrify America says it expects to have around 800 locations in operation in the US. Show #865   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 12th August 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   EV EVENT ON THURSDAY IN CINCINNATI "Our fourth E-Vroom Zoom will provide insight into how dealerships are being educated on and playing an increasing role in the adoption of electric vehicles. We'll hear from Trey Woeste of Beechmont Auto Group. EV Cincy is an initiative designed to help build awareness and educate the public about the benefits of electric vehicles and the EV activities happening in and around Cincinnati."   What are E-Vroom Zooms? E-Vroom Zooms are online video conference chats about electric vehicles and the EV work being done in Cincinnati. While they may include a powerpoint presentation, they are not to be confused with a webinar where the speaker has limited interaction with the audience. The purpose of E-Vroom Zooms is to spark conversation to educate so our calls will be more aligned with a video conference format where interaction is encouraged; it is not presenter-centric, but rather group-centric; and everyone can see everyone (video will be encouraged).   Aug 13, 2020 02:00 PM in Eastern Time (US and Canada)   2021 SKODA ENYAQ IV EXTERIOR PREVIEWED "September 1 will be the day when Skoda is going to lift the veil on its first fully electric SUV, but until then, here are more teasers to ease the wait. The Enyaq iV is being previewed yet again today, this time through official renderings giving us a pretty good understanding of how Czech’s Volkswagen ID.4 will look on the outside." repotrs Motor1: "In typical teaser fashion, the alloy wheels are unrealistically large and the door handles are missing. That “Founder’s Edition” badge on the front fender belongs to a special edition capped at 1,895 units to signal Skoda’s inception 125 years ago. The limited-run variant is going to have a slightly different design than the other Enyaq iV versions and will bundle “special features.”. If the range is your top priority, you’ll want to opt for the rear-wheel-drive variant with a single motor mounted at the back and the 82-kWh battery with enough juice to do 311 miles (500 kilometers) between charges. The Enyaq iV RS will become Skoda’s most powerful model ever, packing a dual-motor AWD setup with 302 hp and a 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 6.2 seconds."   https://www.motor1.com/news/438652/2021-skoda-enyaq-exterior-teaser   ENEL X LAUNCHES CHARGING NETWORK IN BUCHAREST "Enel X has installed and commissioned a network of 34 charging points for electric cars in Bucharest and the surrounding area. These are mainly AC chargers with 22 kW, but also some DC chargers with up to 50 kW charging capacity." writes electrive: "The current installation in Bucharest is part of Enel X Romania’s plan to build a nationwide network of charging points for electric cars in Romania with approximately 2,500 charging points by 2023. According to the announcement made in 2018, DC charging points with up to 150 kW will also be built. For operation in the city centre of Bucharest, however, Enel X is relying primarily on the AC charging point called ‘JuicePole’ by the company, which provides two charging points (22 kW each). Just this week Enel X announced that the network of public charging stations in Europe has passed the 50,000 charging point mark."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/08/12/enel-x-launches-charging-network-in-bucharest/   FORD MUSTANG MACH-E WILL SOUNDS LIKE A V8 "Ford is vitally concerned that customers for its upcoming Mustang Mach-E battery electric SUV get to experience all the goodness of the Mustang tradition, so it has created an optional sound system that will recreate the lusty rumble of a real Mustang powered by a real gasoline-powered American V-8." says CleanTechnica: "e world populated by pedestrians and bicyclists so they are aware of its presence. This is a dedicated sound system that interacts with throttle position and torque output to faithfully mimic what the car would sound like if it actually had a real V-8 engine burbling through twin exhaust pipes. The engine noises sound like they’re coming from the front of the vehicle, or “frunk,” but they’re actually coming from the car’s speakers — whether the radio is on or not. Ford says the Mustang Mach-E GT, which starts at $60,500, will sprint to 60 mph in about 3.5 seconds, while the standard car will get to 60 in about 5 seconds. The cars are expected in dealer showrooms about a year from now."   https://cleantechnica.com/2020/08/11/braap-rumble-vroom-ford-mustang-mach-e-will-come-with-all-the-sounds-of-a-good-old-v-8-engine/   TESLA IS ALREADY HIRING CONSTRUCTION, HR WORKERS IN AUSTIN "Tesla Inc. officially announced it was bringing its next car assembly plant to Austin a little more than two weeks ago, but the electric carmaker isn’t wasting any time when it comes to establishing a presence on the ground in the Texas capital, with dozens of job openings." says BizJournals.com: "The company has 39 job openings in Austin posted on its career website. But once customer support and energy installation jobs are removed, there appear to be 24 postings related to the gigafactory. And it's possible the company is looking for multiple people to fill some of the open roles. Most of the openings are construction related: construction safety manager, structural designer, civil engineer. Site work has already started at the factory site, northeast of Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, off the State Highway 130 toll road. A site plan application for the Tesla factory was filed Aug. 4 with the city of Austin Development Services Department."   https://www.bizjournals.com/austin/news/2020/08/07/tesla-austin-factory-already-hiring.html   VITESCO TECHNOLOGIES SUPPLIES DRIVE CONTROL UNIT FOR THE VOLKSWAGEN ID.3 The device activates the electric motor, coordinates all commands initiated by the accelerator pedal, plays an integral part in charging and energy management as well as the management of the high-voltage electrical system. It also acts as an interface to the other control units inside the vehicle. The device also allows connectivity with the outside world to enable software updates, and functional enhancements at any time in the field. As a result, in addition to functional safety, great attention was also placed on cyber security during the development of the new component.   https://www.continental.com/en/press/press-releases/2020-08-12-vw-id3-drivetrain-control-230156   TESLA CCS COMBO 2 ADAPTERS GET CHEAPER European V3 Superchargers feature single-cable CCS technology, which are directly compatible with all Model 3 vehicles. Model S and Model X vehicles in region can access V3 Superchargers with a CCS Combo 2 adapter. Model S and Model X owners may use a CCS Combo 2 adapter to connect to compatible third-party networks. All Tesla Model S and Model X vehicles produced after May 1, 2019 have the technical capability to charge at CCS Combo 2 charging sites with the use of a CCS Combo 2 adapter.   I have a Model S or Model X produced before May 1, 2019. Can I take advantage of CCS Combo 2 charging? Schedule a simple service retrofit in order to take advantage of CCS Combo 2 charging via the Tesla CCS Combo 2 adapter. You may schedule a service retrofit at your local Tesla service center via your Tesla mobile app.   How much does a CCS Combo 2 service retrofit cost? CCS Combo 2 retrofit service costs £280, including the cost of a CCS Combo 2 adapter.   What is the peak charge rate I can receive with a CCS Combo 2 adapter? All Model S and Model X owners can currently receive peak charge rates up to 142kW, roughly on par with the fastest charge rates supported by V2 Supercharging (150kW). We will continue to validate this technology as part of the V3 Supercharger rollout and will provide additional information regarding peak charge rates as it is available.   2020 CHENGDU MOTOR SHOW EXPLAINS WHY CHINA IS THE GLOBAL EPICENTER FOR EVS "Despite the fact that most of the world is trying to recover from COVID-19, in China they are already allowing large venues, like the 2020 Chengdu Motor Show, to take place. It ran from July 24 to August 2 and featured an impressive 1,500 cars from various automakers (domestic or otherwise), many of which were plug-in hybrids or electric." says InsideEVs: "Prospective EV buyers in China already have a vast array of very affordable models to choose from and based on what we’ve seen at the Chengdu motor show, they will be treated to more (and better) electric cars in the near future. Many local manufacturers are already showing their second or even third electric vehicle, and there are plenty of models that seem genuinely credible."   https://insideevs.com/news/437604/chengdu-motor-show-electric-vehicles-roundup/   You can listen to all 864 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically.   It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast.   And  if you have an Amazon Echo, download our Alexa Skill, search for EV News Daily and add it as a flash briefing.   Come and say hi on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter just search EV News Daily, have a wonderful day, I’ll catch you tomorrow and remember…there’s no such thing as a self-charging hybrid.     PHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE (PREMIUM PARTNER) BRAD CROSBY (PREMIUM PARTNER) AVID TECHNOLOGY (PREMIUM PARTNER) PORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATI (PREMIUM PARTNER) AUDI CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) NATIONALCARCHARGING.COM and ALOHACHARGE.COM  (PREMIUM PARTNER) DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNEL (PREMIUM PARTNER)   DAVID AND LISA ALLEN (PARTNER) OEM AUDIO OF NEW ZEALAND AND EVPOWER.CO.NZ (PARTNER) GARETH HAMER eMOBILITY NORWAY HTTPS://WWW.EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM/  (PARTNER) BOB BOOTHBY – MILLBROOK COTTAGES AND ELOPEMENT WEDDING VENUE (PARTNER) DARIN MCLESKEY (PARTNER)   ALAN ROBSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALAN SHEDD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEX BANAHENE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEXANDER FRANK @ https://www.youtube.com/c/alexsuniverse42 ANDERS HOVE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREA JEFFERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASEER KHALID (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASHLEY HILL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BÅRD FJUKSTAD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRENT KINGSFORD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRIAN THOMPSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRUCE BOHANNAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHARLES HALL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRIS HOPKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) COLIN HENNESSY AND CAMBSEV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG COLES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG ROGERS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAMIEN DAVIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DARREN FEATCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVE DEWSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID FINCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID MOORE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PARTINGTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PRESCOTT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DON MCALLISTER / SCREENCASTSONLINE.COM (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERU KYEYUNE-NYOMBI (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) FREDRIK ROVIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GENE RUBIN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GILBERTO ROSADO (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GEOFF LOWE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEDLEY WRIGHT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN GRIFFITHS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN SEAR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN (WATTIE) WATKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JACK OAKLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAMES STORR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JIM MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODICERS) JOHN C SOLAR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON AKA BEARDY MCBEARDFACE FROM KENT EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON MANCHAK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JUAN GONZALEZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEN MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEVIN MEYERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KYLE MAHAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LARS DAHLAGER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LAURENCE D ALLEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LEE BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LUKE CULLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARCEL WARD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARK BOSSERT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARTY YOUNG  (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MATT PISCIONE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIA OPPELSTRUP (PARTNER) MICHAEL PASTRONE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIKE WINTER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHAN GORE-BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NEIL E ROBERTS FROM SUSSEX EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NIGEL MILES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) OHAD ASTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PAUL RIDINGS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER)               PAUL STEPHENSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GLASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GORTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETER & DEE ROBERTS FROM OXON EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER)  PHIL MOUCHET (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHILIP TRAUTMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RAJ BADWAL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RAJEEV NARAYAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENE KEEMIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENÉ SCHNEIDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RICHARD LUPINSKY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB HERMANS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB FROM THE RSTHINKS EV CHANNEL ON YOUTUBE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RUPERT MITCHELL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) SEIKI PAYNE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEPHEN PENN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEVE JOHN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) THOMAS J. Show #805   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 10th June 2020. TESLA IS HAVING TROUBLE SCALING THE MODEL Y "The Model Y went into production just before the pandemic forced Tesla to shut down its Fremont factory. Now that the factory is back to work, Tesla had hoped to ramp up Model Y production as well. But not everything has gone to plan.  And CEO Elon Musk is once again taking to the factory floor to see if he can fix problems himself." Says Jalopnik: "It’s always unclear whether Elon taking to the factory floors actually helps—it seems distracting, if nothing else, if you’re trying to focus on your work and the billionaire CEO of the company is wandering around observing things. But whether it’s a publicity stunt or not—or maybe Elon’s just bored—these factory tours always just seem to come and go, and production rolls on."   As per Bloomberg: "Tesla Inc.’s Elon Musk told employees the electric-car maker is having issues boosting output of its new Model Y crossover and said he’ll be walking the assembly line on a weekly basis to troubleshoot production snafus."   Elon in an email on Saturday: “It is extremely important for us to ramp up Model Y production and minimize rectification needs. I want you to know that it really makes a difference to Tesla right now. Model Y, especially GA (stands for General Assembly), is the top priority for both production and manufacturing engineering. GA4 (stands for General Assembly Line 4) is also top priority for facility improvements. For those working in GA4, thank you for bearing with tough conditions. Will get better fast. I will be walking the line personally every week. We are doing reasonably well with S, X, and 3, but there are production and supply chain ramp challenges with Model Y, as is always the case with new products."   Teslarati reports: "The current production line where the Model Y is built is GA4, which is an outdoor tent that sits next to the Fremont facility. Previously, the Model 3 was constructed on this line and was eventually built 5,000 sedans a week. Much like the Model Y’s current roadblocks, the Model 3 also encountered problems at the beginning of its eventually-successful ramp up stage."   https://jalopnik.com/tesla-is-having-trouble-scaling-the-model-y-1843969100   TESLA MODEL Y DEMAND MIGHT BE WEAK "It's possible Tesla faces weaker than expected demand for the Model Y SUV as the company now includes the vehicle in its referral program." Says Roadshow by CNET: "Seeing the Model Y show up so soon after production and deliveries started is, frankly, kind of surprising. The whole concept is to reward the Tesla owner referring a new buyer and each receives 1,000 miles worth of free Supercharger station use. Then, hopefully, enough current owners flip new buyers into Teslas to help create more demand. In contrast to the Model Y's very early addition to the referral program, the Model 3 didn't show up until one year after deliveries started"   https://www.msn.com/en-us/autos/news/tesla-model-y-demand-might-be-weak-judging-by-automakers-latest-move/ar-BB15g5qx?li=BBnb4R5   LORDSTOWN MOTORS TO UNVEIL ENDURANCE ELECTRIC TRUCK THIS MONTH "Lordstown Motors is making good on its promise to unveil the Endurance electric pickup truck this summer, announcing that its maiden product will be introduced during a company meeting the week of June 22, video of which will be released to the public by month’s end." Reports Autoblog: "Integration work has also begun on areas like the body shop, general assembly, motor lines and paint shop, with demolition of around 200,000 square feet to make space for lines to build the battery and motors. The Detroit Free Press recently reported that Lordstown currently employs around 70 people, mostly engineers, and including a team of 20 who work in a design studio in Ford’s backyard in Dearborn, Mich. making clay models of future vehicles, with the remainder working on retooling the plant. The goal is to make 30 pre-production versions of the Endurance by December."   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/06/09/lordstown-motors-endurance-unveiling-june/   GM CEO MARY BARRA PREDICTS MASS ELECTRIFICATION WILL TAKE DECADES "Mary Barra, the firm's CEO, conceded that battery-powered cars won't fully replace their gasoline-burning counterparts for several decades. She stressed the shift is ongoing, but she hinted it will be slower than many assume." Says Autoblog.   "Leadership Live with David Rubenstein," a talk show aired by Bloomberg Television: "We believe the transition will happen over time, It will happen in a little bit longer period, but it will happen"   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/06/09/mary-barra-gm-electric-vehicle-timeline-decades/   TESLA V3 SUPERCHARGER TEST "We know Tesla's new V3 Superchargers can deliver up to 250 kW to Model 3's, but until now, we hadn't recorded a charging session ourselves to see exactly what the charging curve looks like." Says Tom Molougney for InsideEVs: "I had the perfect opportunity to do so this weekend, as I was conducting a 70-mph range test on my 2019 Tesla Model 3 and would be draining the battery down to zero. There's only one V3 Supercharger site open in New Jersey, and it's right off the NJ Turnpike. During the charging session, the vehicle reached 250 kW at the 5% SOC point and held it until the SOC reached 24%. That's similar to how Porsche manages the Taycan's charging curve, as it too begins to ramp down the power once the car is at 25% SOC. While charging on the V3 Supercharger, I reached 50% SOC in only thirteen minutes, and the car was still accepting 120 kW at that point. It took 28 minutes to reach 80% and the charge rate has slowed down to 54 kW at that point. Had I continued to let the car charge to 100% it would have taken longer for the last 20% than it took to get to 80%. "   https://insideevs.com/news/427836/tesla-model-3-v3-supercharging-test/   MG E-MOTION HAS ITS PRODUCTION VERSION REVEALED BY PATENT IMAGES " Presented in 2017, the electric coupe was expected to premiere in 2020. With the COVID-19 pandemics and MG’s silence, we thought it was going to be postponed. Yet, the guys at Cochespias.net found Chinese patent images that reveal the production version of the E-Motion." Says MSN: "With that, the new electric coupe front end lost character and looks very much like an Aston Martin. The dashboard image allows us to see that the E-Motion will have a giant heads-up display. Around the cluster, flat surfaces suggest a massive screen for controlling the infotainment system, air conditioning, and other car functions – either that or a bizarre design. If the car can still preserve the 500 km (311 mi) of range and the acceleration time of less than 4 seconds the MG E-Motion may repeat the ZS EV success."   https://www.msn.com/en-gb/cars/news/mg-e-motion-has-its-production-version-revealed-by-patent-images/ar-BB15fdP1   BMW READY TO START PRODUCTION OF IX3 AT CHINESE PLANT "BMW's iX3 is scheduled to enter production in late summer, the automaker said Tuesday. The battery-electric version of the popular X3 crossover SUV will be built exclusively at a plant in Shenyang, China, which is run by a joint venture between BMW and local partner Brilliance." Reports Motor Authority: "The plant is currently building pre-production iX3s but will soon make the switch to customer examples. Both the iX3 and regular X3 will be built on the same line. BMW will start deliveries of the iX3 in China and Europe later this year but doesn't plan to sell it in the United States. Instead, U.S. customers seeking an electric BMW crossover will have to wait until the larger iNext arrives in 2021.The production version is expected to come with 74 kilowatt-hours of battery capacity, which is lower than what rivals are already packing. For example, the Audi E-Tron and Jaguar I-Pace come with with 95- and 90-kwh batteries, respectively. It means the iX3's range could be considerably lower than 200 miles if measured by the EPA, which could be one of the reasons BMW has decided not to sell the iX3 here."   https://www.motorauthority.com/news/1117634_bmw-ready-to-start-production-of-ix3-at-chinese-plant   ELECTRIC WRX KIT COULD MAKE 2021 COMPETITION DEBUT "Austrian firm Kreisel won the tender to produce and supply the electric kits for World RX's revised electric strategy last October, but the introduction of electric cars at the sport's top level has been postponed a year due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic." Says motorsport.com: "The four-wheel drive, twin-motor 500 kW kit will be built into a Skoda Fabia R5 chassis (called the Fabia REX), in a collaboration with the Baumschlager Rallye Racing squad run by three-time Janner Rally winner Raimund Baumschlager. The kit will run a single-speed transmission, produced by British firm Xtrac. While the 52.65kWh battery's safety features will be the same as those used in the World Rally Championship's hybrid switch for 2022, for which Kreisel will also be involved in supplying together with Compact Dynamics GmbH, the WRC machines will not use the same battery as the World RX Supercars"   They said: ""We have our own charging system which makes it possible for us to charge the battery in 18 minutes, so this means in a normal service period in a conventional rally of 20 - 30 mins, you can recharge the full battery"   https://www.motorsport.com/world-rx/news/electric-world-rallycross-kit-2021-debut/4803725/?utm_campaign=RSS-ALL&utm_content=www&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=RSS&utm_term=News   GERMAN PUBLIC ELECTRIC CAR CHARGING NETWORK GROWS 60% "Germany's public network for electric vehicles expanded by 10,000 charging spots, an increase of nearly 60 percent, in the last year, the country's electricity lobby said on Monday." According to Automotive News Europe: "As part of the country's stimulus package unveiled last week, 2.5 billion euros ($2.8 billion) have been earmarked specifically to build out electric charging spots and battery cell technology. Around 280,000 electric vehicles or plug-in hybrids are currently registered in Germany. Existing public infrastructure can cater for 440,000 cars."   https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/german-public-electric-car-charging-network-grows-60   UK POWER NETWORKS LAUNCHES EV CHARGER SURGERY FOR COUNCILS "UK Power Networks says its new electric vehicle charging surgery for local councils could save them millions of pounds by matching chargepoints with network capacity." according to The Energyst: "UKPN said its connections team undertakes a detailed analysis of where a local authority plans to install charge points, and suggests the most cost-effective alternative locations."   QUESTION OF THE WEEK   How far does a plug-in hybrid need to drive on EV power only?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 229 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #782   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 18th May 2020. Thank you to Patron PHILIP TRAUTMAN who is now an EXECUTIVE PRODUCER.   POLESTAR ANNOUNCES FIRST US RETAIL CITIES “Polestar will begin by selling its electric performance cars this year in New York, Los Angeles, and the San Francisco Bay Area. In the first half of 2021, its retail footprint will grow to include Boston, Denver, Texas, Washington DC, and Florida regions.” Says electrek: “The all-electric $60,000 Polestar 2 sedan provides 408 horsepower and 487 pound-feet torque in an all-wheel-drive configuration. Its 78-kWh battery pack is expected to offer an estimated (albeit optimistic) 275 miles of range. “   https://electrek.co/2020/05/18/polestar-announces-first-us-retail-cities-selling-evs-from-coast-to-coast/   FORD SAYS THE MUSTANG MACH-E CAN ADD 61 MILES OF RANGE IN 10 MINUTES “2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E, which Ford said Friday can add 61 miles of range in just 10 minutes. That's at a charging rate of 150 kilowatts, available for example at an Electrify America DC high-speed charging station.” Reports Motor Authoirty: “The pace is comparable to what similar sized battery-electric SUVs like the Audi E-Tron and Jaguar I-Pace deliver, though Tesla's latest V3 Supercharger is claimed by the company to be capable of delivering 75 miles in 5 minutes for the Model 3 thanks to charging at 250 kw.”   https://www.motorauthority.com/news/1125693_ford-says-the-mustang-mach-e-can-add-61-miles-of-range-in-10-minutes   VW SETS THE STAGE FOR ID.BUZZ WITH AN ELECTRIC VERSION OF THE TRANSPORTER   “Volkswagen is in the process of transforming the deliciously retro ID.Buzz concept it unveiled at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show into a production model. In the meantime, it's catering to van drivers who want or need to go electric by releasing a battery-powered variant of the Transporter developed jointly with German tuning firm ABT” says Autoblog: “Called eTransporter, the van looks just like a diesel-powered model when it's viewed from the outside, with the exception of a small ABT emblem on the grille. Volkswagen hasn't released images of the interior, but it noted a power meter replaces the tachometer in the instrument cluster. It's what's under the sheetmetal that counts here. Pricing for the Volkswagen eTransporter starts at £42,060, or about $51,000 at the current (and volatile) conversion rate. In comparison, the diesel-powered Transporter carries a base price of £27,626 (around $33,000).”   A range of up to 82 miles on a single charge. Charging is carried out via a Type 2 CCS inlet, with a 7.2 kW on-board charger fitted, and rapid DC charging possible at up to 50 kW. This makes for a rapid charge in around 45 minutes, topping up the 37.3 kWh battery (32.5 kWh net) to 80%.   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/05/18/vw-electric-transporter-van/   JAGUAR CANCELS I-PACE ETROPHY “Jaguar has axed the I-PACE eTROPHY series, announcing on Monday that the single-make all-electric series will end following the 2019-20 FIA Formula E Championship season.”  According to e-racing365: “Launched in 2018 utilizing production-based SUVs, the eTROPHY served as the exclusive support series for Formula E, although has struggled with car counts from the onset. The British manufacturer had initially targeted 20-car grids but saw on average 12 vehicles during its inaugural season in 2018-19, which was won by Brazilian Sergio Jimenez. Season 2, which kicked off with a double-header at Diriyah in November, featured nine cars, with an additional race taking place in Mexico City prior to the suspension of events due to the coronavirus pandemic”   https://e-racing365.com/i-pace-etrophy/jaguar-cancels-i-pace-etrophy/   FERRARI SLAMS THE BRAKES ON AN ELECTRIC SUPERCAR ”Ferrari has poured cold water on the idea of a pure electric supercar, claiming current battery technology is not good enough. The bold statement comes despite a number of rival brands planning to release electric supercars in the near future.” Says CarAdvice.com.au: “In an interview with UK magazine AutoCar, Ferrari’s chief marketing and commercial officer Enrico Galliera said suitable battery technology is more than five years away. “We firmly believe that battery technology is not yet developed enough to meet the needs of a supercar,” Mr Galliera told AutoCar. “In the next five years, we do not believe the technology will be able to meet the needs of a Ferrari.” Swedish brand Koenigsegg also unveiled its 1270kW electric Gemera 'Mega-GT' earlier this year. Lotus has also planned delivery of its 1470kW/2000Nm Evija electric hypercar to begin in 2020. Earlier this month, Tesla announced it would defer production of its electric Roadster model, which is expected to have supercar levels of performance, however did not cite battery technology as a reason.“   HOW E-BIKES COULD ANSWER OUR COMMUTING PROBLEMS “Demand has rocketed as people consider how to get into work after lockdown. They enable riders to avoid car use and the close contact of public transport – but just how safe, affordable and healthy are they?” asks The Guardian: “Many in the cycling world are wondering if this could be the moment when e-bikes, which are hugely popular in some other European countries (about 40% of bikes sold in the Netherlands are e-bikes), could take off in the UK as well. The biggest barrier in the UK is cyclists feeling unsafe on the roads. In places such as the Netherlands and Denmark, riders of e-bikes, as well as of any other bike, enjoy the fruits of decades of work to make roads safe for cyclists. Now such countries are braced for a further e-bike boom. The European Cycling Federation says that, Europe-wide, e-bike sales grew 22% year on year in 2019, and are expected to rise much faster this year.”   https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2020/may/17/i-can-just-glide-through-traffic-how-e-bikes-could-answer-our-commuting-problems         QUESTION OF THE WEEK   Should Dyson have continued to make a £150,000 EV, or should we only make EVs realistic? Show #702   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 19th February 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   95.6 GWH OF EV BATTERY CAPACITY DEPLOYED GLOBALLY IN 2019 "In 2019, 95.6 GWh of battery capacity was deployed globally in newly sold passenger EVs, an increase of 30% over the year prior, according to Adamas Intelligence’s web-based EV Battery Capacity and Battery Metals Tracker." reports Green Can Congress: "At the global level, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) were responsible for 90% of all passenger EV battery capacity deployed in 2019, followed by plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) with 7% and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) with the remaining 3%."   https://www.greencarcongress.com/2020/02/20200218-adamas.html   MOBILITY 2020: WHAT THE YEAR HAS IN STORE More than 30,000 pre-bookers have registered in advance for an ID.3 r , and this year they will be able to take delivery of their car. This means that Volkswagen Group’s vision of building e-cars for the masses is now becoming reality. Further fully electric models from the ID. Family will follow in the coming years. By 2029, Volkswagen plans to launch up to 75 pure electric models across the Group, plus around 60 hybrid vehicles.   In 2020, the first two Volkswagen plants designed purely for electric cars will begin series production. In Anting and Foshan, the SAIC VOLKSWAGEN and FAW-Volkswagen joint ventures will produce around 600,000 pure electric vehicles on the MEB basis every year. MEB production “Made in China” is then to be gradually expanded to 15 different MEB models across different brands by 2025.   In 2020, stricter emission standards will come into force in India, opening a new chapter in the subcontinent’s passenger car market. In an unusual step, the government decided to skip one emission standard stage and switch directly from the current BS-IV (Euro 4) to BS-VI (Euro 6) standard. Thanks to timely developments, all Volkswagen Group models based on the ‘INDIA 2.0’ strategy will comply with these standards. With emissions of 2,654 Megatons, India is the third largest CO2 emitter worldwide after China and the USA.   In California, cars with low CO2 emissions have been allowed to use so-called HOV lanes (high-occupancy vehicle lane) since this year – even if only one person is in the car. These lanes are otherwise reserved for cars with at least two occupants. All vehicles that fall below specified emission levels are marked with a “clean air sticker”.   https://www.volkswagenag.com/en/news/stories/2020/02/mobility-2020-what-the-year-has-in-store-for-motorists.html   CITROËN C5 AIRCROSS PHEV UP FOR ORDER IN THE UK "Citroën has officially opened the order books for the new C5 Aircross plug-in hybrid in the UK. It is being offering it in two grades named the Flair and Flair Plus. Pricing starts at £35,340 and £36,815 respectively. Customer deliveries will begin in mid-2020." reports electrive: "the plug-in hybrid offers a system output of 165 kW, to which the electric motor contributes 80 kW. The battery with a capacity of 13.2 kWh enables a purely electric WLTP range of up to 50 kilometres."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/02/18/citroen-opens-uk-order-books-for-the-c5-aircross-phev/   TESLA MODEL S “RAVEN” HITS IMPRESSIVE 181 KW "A Tesla Model S was recently able to hit a peak charging rate of 181 kW during a Supercharging session. While the flagship sedan’s peak charge rate is still a bit behind the Model 3’s peak charge rate of 250 kW on a V3 Supercharger, it is nevertheless impressive, highlighting the fact that Tesla’s vehicles are in a constant state of improvement." says Simon Alvarez at Teslarati: "Tesla owner-enthusiast Eli Burton of the My Tesla Adventure YouTube channel recently paid a visit to the Fremont factory on his Raven Model S Performance. The vehicle only had 5% of charge left on its 100 kWh battery pack, giving the flagship sedan the opportunity to experience a full charging session on one of the site’s V3 Superchargers."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-s-hits-181-kwh-peak-supercharger-v3-video/   TESLA CAN SELL IN COLORADO, BUT RIVIAN CAN’T "A new bill, SB 167, has been introduced in Colorado which would allow electric vehicle manufacturers to bypass the state’s direct-sales ban." writes electrek: "Rivian is looking to follow a similar model as Tesla, as the model makes sense for them as well.  But they don’t fall under the same exception as Tesla in Colorado law, so they need this new bill to pass. Colorado is important for Rivian.  The state is one of the larger electric vehicle buyers in the US, coming in fourth place in per capita EV sales.  It’s also full of exactly the kind of adventure truck/SUV buyers Rivian is targeting with their R1T and R1S."   Read the full article here: https://electrek.co/2020/02/17/tesla-can-sell-in-colorado-but-rivian-cant-dealers-oppose-a-new-law-to-change-that/   NEW SERVICE CENTER ORANGE COUNTY - MODEL 3 ONLY! "We are excited to announce the opening of our newest Service Center in Santa Ana — designated for Model 3. Starting today, to improve the service experience for all owners, Santa Ana will only schedule Model 3 owners, while Costa Mesa will only schedule Model S and Model X owners. All other Service Centers in the area will continue to serve all Models. Schedule your next appointment with your Tesla app. For most repairs, Mobile Service will be selected when scheduling your appointment to have a technician come to you — the most convenient way of servicing your car. We look forward to delivering tailored service throughout Orange County."   User AEdennis: "That’s been the plan with Santa Ana and Costa Mesa for a while. Glad to see it publicized"   https://teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/threads/new-service-center-orange-county-model-3-only.185467/   FORD MANAGER: "JUST BEING ELECTRIC IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH." Ted Cannis, Director Global Electrification at Ford Motor Company spoke.   "In Germany, many think that the fuel cell will come soon. Regardless of whether I speak to French, Canadians or Chinese, there are no concerns about the battery because customers are waiting for hydrogen. However, battery technology is now available, is constantly evolving, charging is becoming easier, the requirements of the government are moving in this direction and so are our competitors - there is currently a critical mass moving towards battery-electric cars."   "We have a lot of new customers who haven't owned a Ford yet. One of the dealers I spoke to has 12 reservations - all new customers. They are also more than ten years younger."   "Our experience has shown that the sound will not be an obstacle. We were on the road in the USA with prototypes of the electric F-150 pickup . Nobody missed the sound of a V8 there! This shocked us almost more than with the Mustang. On request, we will also have a very authentic sound in the Mustang Mach-E."   " the entire software can receive over-the-air updates so that the car stays fresh over the years. We want to offer our customers a modern user experience that develops over time - as they know it from websites or apps."   "the "FordPass" app. Here, our European customers can get access to over 125,000 charging points from the NewMotion roaming network and can easily bill for Ionity's HPC loaders and charging."   "With electric cars, the software is at least as important as the hardware, yes. Now we have a vehicle in which almost all modules can be updated. So why shouldn't we take advantage of this to provide improvements to the customer? And of course, for that we have to constantly develop the software."   "The battery cells come from LG Chem from Poland. From there they are shipped to Mexico, where we assemble them into ready-to-install battery packs - right next to the production of the Mustang Mach-E. Until recently, we only had a few hybrids in Europe, but Ford has been using lithium-ion batteries since 2012. It will offer rebates capped at $20,000 per vehicle."   https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/transport/singapore-budget-2020-push-to-promote-evs-in-move-to-phase-out-petrol-and-diesel   VOLKSWAGEN PLOTS RUGGED ELECTRIC 4X4 SUV FOR 2023 "Volkswagen is on the verge of giving the green light to a new ID-branded SUV to rival the upcoming BMW iX3 and Mercedes-Benz EQB. " according to Autocar.co.uk "The electric-powered SUV is known to officials at Volkswagen’s Wolfsburg headquarters in Germany as the Ruggdzz, a working title that draws on the word ‘rugged’.  Although it is still at a preliminary stage of development, the new ID model is expected to enter production in 2023 as part of a 30-strong SUV line-up planned by Volkswagen by the middle of the decade."   https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/volkswagen-plots-rugged-electric-4x4-suv-2023   NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   Are you happy to pay extra for add-on features or apps for your EV, after you’ve bought it?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 235 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. MaLoh     2020 PORSCHE TAYCAN CRUSHES ITS EPA RANGE Dan Edmunds at Autoblog: "I’m driving on what I call my "Lap of Orange County" test loop, an EV range test course of my own design. It’s made up of suburban residential and arterial streets, along with a stretch of the Pacific Coast Highway. Speed limits range between 25 and 60 mph, with much of it in the 35-to-45-mph range." He continues: "I start out in Range mode instead of the default Normal mode because, well, this is a range test. This configures the Taycan to prioritize its front motor, and it also drops the air suspension to low mode regardless of speed. I begin to get optimistic about the Taycan’s chances after about two hours.  I roll into my driveway with 209.2 miles on the trip odometer. After two laps of Orange County, the Taycan has surpassed its rated range by 8.2 miles, and it did so with another 78 miles on the range meter. That’s 287.2 miles of projected range, folks, some 43 percent better than the EPA rating. I’ve taken numerous trips in many different electric cars, so I was never concerned about the Taycan even if its range did prove to be “just” 201 miles. But it’s now abundantly clear to me that the Taycan Turbo’s real world range is easily better that the number the EPA gave it."   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/02/03/2020-porsche-taycan-turbos-range-test/   PORSCHE VENTURES INVESTS IN SOFTWARE START-UP NITROBOX The software start-up Nitrobox GmbH has concluded a financing round in the single-digit million euro range: The “NeueCapital Partners” fund from Silicon Valley and Porsche Ventures, the venture capital unit of the Stuttgart-based sports car manufacturer, took a stake in the Hamburg-based company. The Nitrobox platform enables international corporations to handle financial processes via a central solution and to control them in a flexible way – from modelling the business model to digital payments, billing, account receivables management and compliance. This enables customers to bring new digital products and services to market quickly, while reducing their process costs.   https://www.volkswagenag.com/en/news/2020/02/Porsche_Ventures_invests_Nitrobox.html   TESLA MODEL 3 VS. PORSCHE TAYCAN CHARGING SPEED TESTED BY GERMAN PUBLICATION "The Porsche Taycan is out and we’ve already declared it the best Porsche ever, but questions still remain about the Taycan’s low efficiency and how that affects its charging rate.  Early owners and reviews have found that the Taycan is more efficient than ratings suggest, so how does that affect its actual charge rate?" asks electrek: "Nextmove, a German YouTube channel, put the car to the test against the most efficient EV, the Tesla Model 3, to see which one would win: Tesla’s lower peak kW rate and higher efficiency, or Taycan’s higher rate and lower efficiency. Firstly, they found that the Taycan was not capable of charging at the full rated 270kW.  Even pulling into the station with 1% battery, they never saw a rate above 255kW.  In Electrek’s own test drive, we also only saw a peak of 252kW. On a charge from 0-50%, the Taycan reaches a rate of 856km/h on IONITY, while the Model 3 reaches a rate of 766km/h. But on a V3 Supercharger, the Model 3 jumps past the Taycan and charges at 905km/h when measured from 0-50%."   https://electrek.co/2020/02/06/tesla-model-3-vs-porsche-taycan-charging-speed-tested-by-german-publication/   AUDI AND COSTCO TEAM UP FOR E-TRON DISCOUNT THAT CAN HIT $13,000 " Audi has a killer offer for the E-Tron SUV, delivered to the customers in cooperation with Costco. An analysis from CarsDirect reveals that you can save as much as $13,000 from the zero-emission model’s MSRP." says InsideEVs: "A dealer incentive bulletin shows that the program began last month and currently involves a $2,000 cash bonus on all 2019 E-Tron models when buying or leasing through the Costco Auto Program. If you agree to complete an optional survey, you’ll also receive a $500 Costco Cash Card. In addition, the electric SUV is eligible for a $7,500 federal tax credit and certain state and local plug-in incentives. There’s also a $3,000 Marketing Allowance discount by some dealers, which, according to CarsDirect, can be combined with 0.99% APR financing for up to 66 months."   https://www.motor1.com/news/397175/audi-costco-pricing-discount/   BUY AN AUDI E-TRON EV, GET A FREE SOLAR POWER SUBSCRIPTION "Audi's first electric vehicle in the United States, the e-tron SUV, now comes with access to off-site solar power in a deal limited to 3000 customers. According to Audi and its partner in the venture, clean-energy supplier Arcadia, the 10-year subscription will include enough electricity to offset the cost of about 2400 miles per year, or what Audi estimates is one full e-tron charge each month." writes Car and Driver: "After signing up, customers pay their utility bill through Arcadia, which will calculate the credits or savings that the remote solar panels generate and apply that to the customer's bill.   https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a30766055/audi-e-tron-solar-power-subscription/   SKODA TEASES ALL-NEW OCTAVIA VRS IV PHEV As the first SKODA vRS model to feature a plug-in hybrid powertrain, the Octavia vRS iV is unique in the way it combines family-friendly versatility and sports car-like performance with sustainability and efficiency. Show #632   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 5th November 2019. OCTOBER'S PURE-EV FIGURES UP 150% ON LAST YEAR "Pure-electric vehicle registrations in the UK achieved their third best month ever in October 2019 - and the highest total outside of a new registration plate month - according to the latest statistics from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT)." writes Next Green Car: "Pure-EV figures are up 152% compared to October 2018, and the fuel type is 133% ahead of the first ten months of 2018. More than 28,000 pure-electric models have been registered so far in 2019; over 54,000 plug-in vehicles when PHEVs are included in the figures."   The Express said: "The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) data also revealed alternative fuelled vehicles now made up 9.9 percent of the overall UK car sales this month in a new record. Diesel sales are in terrible decline and plummeted to a 28.3 percent reduction on data from twelve months ago. The drop is the 31st consecutive month diesel sales have been in negative figures."   https://www.nextgreencar.com/news/8784/octobers-pureev-figures-up-150-on-last-year/   https://www.express.co.uk/life-style/cars/1200222/electric-cars-for-sale-uk-smmt-data-tesla   TESLA BOOSTS MODEL 3 STANDARD RANGE+ SUPERCHARGING POWER TO 170 KW "Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus is getting an increase in Supercharging peak power to 170 kW in the latest over-the-air software update. The boost in Supercharger charging rate for the entry-level Model 3 variant represents a nearly 50-70% increase from its 100 kW to 120 kW charge rate, prior to the version 2019.36.1 update." according to Simon Alvarez at Teslarati: "Tesla’s release notes for the update were brief and direct. “Your Model 3 is now able to charge with increased peak rate power up to 170 kW,” Tesla wrote. The update will enable Model 3 Standard Range Plus owners with more convenience to conduct long trips, thanks to faster Supercharging sessions. Additionally, by increasing peak power at Supercharger stalls, Tesla is able to improve throughout at each station by supporting more vehicles per day."   "A screenshot of Tesla’s release notes for the recent update was shared online by Model 3 Standard Range Plus owner and r/TeslaLounge subreddit member u/toddzman, who noted that prior to the update, his car would usually top out during Supercharging sessions at 456 mph at 100 kW. With the boost to a 170 kW peak supercharging rate, the Tesla owner noted that his Standard Range Plus Model 3 could potentially hit charging speeds of about 775 miles per hour of charge, provided that it is connected to a V3 Supercharger. "   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-3-standard-range-plus-supercharging-rate-170-kw/   TESLA REACHES PRELIMINARY BATTERY-SUPPLY DEAL WITH CATL "Tesla Inc. has reached a preliminary agreement to start using CATL as a battery supplier for cars made in China from as early as next year, and the companies are in talks to expand the relationship globally, according to people familiar with the matter." reports Bloomberg: "Following months of negotiations, the companies clinched a non-binding deal after Tesla Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk traveled to Shanghai in late August and met with CATL Chairman Zeng Yuqun for about 40 minutes, according to the people, who asked not to be named discussing private deliberations. Though a final agreement is expected to be signed by mid 2020, there is no guarantee that will happen, the people said. The South Korean battery maker won’t have exclusive rights to be Tesla’s battery supplier, people familiar with the arrangement said in August."   https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-11-05/tesla-is-said-to-reach-preliminary-battery-supply-deal-with-catl   GERMANY INCREASES EV INCENTIVES TO STIMULATE DEMAND "Chancellor Angela Merkel's government and German automakers agreed to increase cash incentives for electric cars as they attempt to accelerate the transition away from the combustion engine." writes Automotive News Europe: "A so-called "Environment Bonus" for battery-powered cars priced up to 40,000 euros will be raised by half to as much as 6,000 euros ($6,680) per vehicle and the auto industry will continue to cover half the cost. The subsidy means that a midrange version of VW's new ID3 battery-powered hatchback will cost around 24,000 euros to 25,000 euros in Germany, analysts Evercore ISI said in a note to investors. Germany is closing in on Norway for European leadership with sales of almost 53,000 full-electric cars this year, according to the KBA federal motor transport authority."   https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/germany-increases-ev-incentives-stimulate-demand   FORD'S ELECTRIC MUSTANG PROJECT CAR PACKS A MANUAL TRANSMISSION "Sports car enthusiasts will sometimes balk at electric cars due to their usual lack of manual transmissions (there's no need for a gearbox, after all), but Ford has hinted that stick shifting might not be completely dead." according to Engadget: "The automaker has partnered with Webasto on a Mustang Lithium project car (no, it's not the Mustang-like SUV) that mates a monstrous 900-plus horsepower electric motor with a six-speed, drag-race-ready Getrag transmission. You could have the thrill of dropping 'gears' without the guilt of spewing emissions, and you'd definitely feel it when there's over 1,000ft/lbs of always-available torque. The power is possible in part due to some cutting-edge tech. Like the Porsche Taycan, the Mustang Lithium has an 800-volt battery system."   https://www.engadget.com/2019/11/05/ford-mustang-lithium-project-ev   ELON MUSK: TESLA WILL INCREASE MODEL S/X BATTERY PACK CAPACITY WITH NEW PLAID MODE VERSION "Elon Musk confirmed Tesla will release a new biggest battery pack capacity for Model S and Model X with the new Plaid mode version coming next year." says Fred at Electrek: "The Model S “Plaid” is expected to become the new top-of-the-line variant for Tesla’s flagship sedan with a new powertrain and even some new performance hardware. Now Musk has confirmed that the powertrain will not only have 3 motors but also a bigger battery pack. Tesla has been rumored to update the Model S and Model X battery packs with the 2170 battery cells currently used in the Model 3 battery packs. Musk has previously said that the Model S and Model X platform would only allow for a maximum battery pack capacity of 120 kWh."   https://electrek.co/2019/11/06/tesla-increase-model-s-x-battery-pack-capacity-plaid-mode-elon-musk/   FISKER'S PRODUCTION-READY OCEAN E-SUV TO DEBUT IN JANUARY "Automotive designer and entrepreneur Henrik Fisker officially disclosed details about his company's upcoming electric vehicle plans. His electric vehicle startup Fisker Inc. is set to debut its upcoming affordable, yet upscale electric SUV in the coming months that will compete with Tesla models." reports Manish at Future Car: "The battery-powered SUV is called the Fisker Ocean and the company will hold a private event to mark its global unveil on Jan 4, 2020. The event will also be live-streamed from the venue.  Henrik said the Fisker Ocean will be a sustainable luxury electric utility vehicle that has been designed to incorporate recycled materials throughout.  The flexible lease program will be offered without any long term contract to avoid the high costs of personal vehicle ownership.  Earlier, the designer also pointed out that the SUV's price would start just under $40,000, about the same price as the upcoming Tesla Model Y crossover. As of yet, we are unsure how (if at all) the CEO's initial price point estimate will factor into this so-called hassle-free subscription service."   https://www.futurecar.com/3587/Fiskers-Production-ready-Ocean-e-SUV-to-Debut-in-January   QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   What do you prefer, the carrot or the stick? Show #533   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 19th July 2019. Welcome to a new PRODUCER JOHN-JOHN MCCONAGHY   Love it! ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ Always relevant news presented in a professional, relaxed, almost radio show manner. Informative to the end, has certainly educated me before I get my first EV. Gerry Bristol via Apple Podcasts · Great Britain · 07/16/19 The best EV podcast ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ I love this podcast for it’s diverse guests, the up-to-date news and the quote “there is no such thing as a self charging hybrid”. If you have an interest in electric vehicles or just curious, this is the podcast to listen to. Martyn Lee has a velvet smooth voice. Willowsbroom via Apple Podcasts · Great Britain · 07/15/19     BYD, TOYOTA ENTER AGREEMENT TO JOINTLY DEVELOP BATTERY ELECTRIC VEHICLES "BYD and Toyota announced this morning that the two industry powerhouses have entered into an agreement that will see them partnering on the development of electric vehicle batteries. The batteries lay the foundation for an electrified future for both companies as the agreement includes provisions to partner on the development of sedans and low-floor SUVs as well." writes Kyle Field for CleanTechnica: "The new set of vehicles will be produced under the Toyota brand specifically for the Chinese market in the early 2020s. Toyota has set a public target of selling a full 50% of its vehicles as electrified vehicles by 2025. The fuzzy use of “electrified” allows the company to count its traditional non-plug-in, fossil-fuel-powered, “self-charging” hybrids in the number. Boiling that down to hard numbers, Toyota is hoping to achieve 15% of its sales from fully electric vehicles on its new e-TNGA platform by 2030."   To curb global warming, both BYD and Toyota seek to reduce CO2 emissions by promoting the widespread use of BEVs. To accomplish these goals, both companies believe there is a need to put aside their rivalry and collaborate; therefore, the two companies have agreed to jointly develop BEVs.   https://cleantechnica.com/2019/07/19/breaking-toyota-byd-to-jointly-develop-evs-batteries-in-new-deal/   https://global.toyota/en/newsroom/corporate/28913709.html   TESLA VEHICLES ARE 8X LESS LIKELY TO BE INVOLVED IN FIRES "Tesla has released its vehicle safety report for the second quarter of 2019. Similar to previous quarters, the report showed that Teslas operating on Autopilot are less likely to meet accidents on the road compared to vehicles operating without the driver-assist system enabled. Tesla’s report this quarter also included statistics on vehicle fires for the first time. " reports Simon at Teslarati: "The electric car maker’s data shows that between 2012-2018, there was approximately one Tesla vehicle fire for every 170 million miles traveled. Considering that the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the US Department of Transportation record one vehicle fire for every 19 million miles traveled, Tesla’s figures make its electric cars over eight times less likely to be involved fires.  Tesla’s data includes incidents resulting from structure fires, arson, and several other factors unrelated to the vehicles themselves."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-s3x-are-8x-less-likely-to-catch-fire-q2-2019-safety-report/   CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8 HYBRID AND PLUG-IN RUMORS ALREADY SWIRLING "The Chevrolet Corvette C8's debut is just a few hours old, and speculation is already swirling about the vehicle's future that could include a variety of forms of electrification. When asked by Autocar about whether the mid-engined 'Vette could use an integrated starter-generator for a mild-hybrid system or a dedicated electric motor driving the front axle, a member of the 'Vette team told the publication: "You would not look stupid if you said that."" according to Chris Bruce for Motor1.com: "Back in 2015, General Motors registered a trademark for Corvette E-Ray, and the company has continued to renew that application into 2019. Rumors suggest the automaker might be reserving the moniker for the hybrid 'Vette."   https://www.motor1.com/news/360780/chevrolet-corvette-c8-hybrid-rumor/   KRÜGER SUCCESSION: OLIVER ZIPSE NEW BMW CEO "Oliver Zipse will take the lead at BMW on 16 August, the board just decided as much. With Harald Krüger leaving, the German carmaker will have much to do to catch up on electric mobility, fast." says electrive.com: "When Krüger took over as Chairman of the Board of Management in 2015, the Group already had an innovative electric car on offer in the form of the i3. The local competition did not have anything that touched it for a long time. 2015 was a turning point for the BMWi electric division: Herbert Diess, then Board Member for Development, had made a decisive contribution to electric mobility at BMW – even during his time as Board Member for Purchasing, he had strengthened BMWi in-house. After his defeat in the duel for his successor at the top of the board, Diess moved to Volkswagen, and the upcoming electric offensive there now bears his signature."   https://www.electrive.com/2019/07/18/kruger-succession-oliver-zipse-to-be-new-bmw-boss/   VIVA LAS VEGAS: TESLA LAUNCHES FIRST V3 SUPERCHARGERS IN SIN CITY "Not long ago, Tesla unveiled its new V3 Supercharger technology that's capable of delivering 250 kW of power. This means you can add up to 180 miles of range to a Model 3 Long Range in just 15 minutes. Since then, the automaker has added some V3 Superchargers to existing stations. However, its first brand-new V3 Supercharger station officially went live just yesterday." says InsideEVs: "The Las Vegas Tesla charging station has a total of 39 chargers. In addition to the V3 Superchargers, the site has 15 Level 2 Tesla Wall Connectors for those who aim to leave their car charging for a longer period of time. Tesla says the new site generates power through the use of solar canopies — which also provide shade for Tesla owners — and the energy is stored in Powerpacks that are located on-site."   https://insideevs.com/news/360792/video-tesla-v3-supercharger-las-vegas/   GM FAILS TO IMPRESS WITH OFFICIAL 2020 CHEVY BOLT EV UPDATES AND CHANGES "In keeping with the updates to the 2018 and 2019 model years, the 2020 Chevy Bolt EV receives only a couple of color changes and some minor feature adjustments. If the consumer-facing updates match only those listed on the fleet order guide, buying a Bolt EV in 2020 will look much the same as it does right now." reports TorqueNews: "While it doesn’t come as a surprise that GM has sticking with the same battery pack at this early stage in its EV development, it’s disappointing that there don’t seem to be any software tweaks to enable longer fast charging at the maximum rate of 55kW. Greater control over thermal management and battery conditioning would also be interesting additions for current Bolt EV drivers, some of whom will be ending three-year leases next year and looking for reasons to stick with the vehicle."   https://www.torquenews.com/7893/gm-fails-impress-official-2020-chevy-bolt-ev-updates   HYUNDAI MOTOR PUSHING TO PRODUCE KONA ELECTRIC IN CZECH FACTORY "Hyundai Motor is considering producing 46,000 units of the Kona Electric at its Czech plant next year, industry sources said on July 17. This volume is almost equal to the 48,000 units to be produced at the company’s Ulsan plant this year." says the Korean news site BusinessKorea: "Currently, the Korean carmaker produces all of its eco-friendly cars for exports at the Ulsan and Asan factories in Korea, except those produced in China. Accordingly, if mass production of the Kona Electric begins at the Czech plant next year, it will be Hyundai Motor’s first electric car and green car produced overseas."   http://www.businesskorea.co.kr/news/articleView.html?idxno=34026   WORLD'S LONGEST ELECTRIC ROAD TRIP ENDS IN NEW ZEALAND "A Dutch sustainability advocate completed the longest ever journey in an electric vehicle in New Zealand on Friday after a three-year drive that took him through more than 30 countries." reports Reuters: "Wiebe Wakker [vee-ba wakka] set off from the Netherlands in March 2016 in his “Blue Bandit” to showcase the potential of sustainable transport, funded by donations from those following his trip on social media. The 101,000-km (62,800 mile) trip took Wakker through Eastern Europe, Iran, India, Southeast Asia, before traveling around much of Australia and across to New Zealand. Wakker gave regular updates on his blog and social media throughout the journey, detailing visiting Iran’s biggest car manufacturer in Tehran, a breakdown on the Indonesian island of Java and visits to Australia’s outback and world-famous Uluru. The drive had relied on the support of strangers across the globe who offered the traveler food, a place to stay and the essential means to charge his car along the way."   https://uk.reuters.com/article/us-environment-newzealand-electric/worlds-longest-electric-road-trip-ends-in-new-zealand-idUKKCN1UE0XP     COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Show #498   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 12th June 2019. I have got a mega Patreon update to do…   Last we heard was from new Producer CHRISTIAN MARLER and EXEC PRODUCER PONTUS KINDBLAD. Next up is new EXEC PRODUCER PERRY SIMPKINS. Then JONATHAN PRICE UK signed up as a PRODUCER. And GREG BAILEY as PRODUCER. Over the weekend new EXEC PRODUCER MICHAEL KYFFIN (KUFFIN). And new PRODUCERS GILL NOWELL and MARK SANDERS. As if that wasn't enough, PAUL RIDINGS moved up to EXEC PRODUCER. And then three new PRODUCERS MICHAEL YOUNG, STEPHEN BROOK and MIKE IN OKLAHOMA.   RENAULT ZOE NEO ZE50 As a Renault Zoe owner I am looking forward to the new one, the ZE50 or Zoe Neo, or whatever we're calling it. The embargo gets lifted Monday and I haven't been told anything so this is all speculation. But a 50kWh battery, with CCS plug and 22kW AC charging makes for a very flexible car.  And not one of the Dutch journalists who attended Paris this week for the media day and took pics, has posted them online. They've kept the styling rather than make it look like a Clio with batteries. It's good to see the LED lights and the front parking sensors.   200KW CHARING FOR MODEL 3 IN EUROPE Starting last weekend, a firmware update will begin to roll out to all Model 3 with the Long Range battery in Europe. It will allow these cars to charge at up to 200 kW which equates to 850 miles per hour of range recovery. This means the fastest-charging cars in the world will be European Model 3 Long Range — charging on European ultrafast charging networks (such as Ionity, Fastned, and Allego).   “As we work towards the introduction of V3 Supercharging in Europe, we’re releasing an early software update to European Model 3 Long Range customers that will allow them to charge at hundreds of third party fast-charging stations – up to 200kW. When our own V3 Supercharger technology is introduced, these cars will be able to charge even faster at 250kW peak charge rates. Tesla vehicles benefit from the most extensive charging network in the world by having access to Tesla chargers like our Supercharger network, as well as publicly-available EV charging networks.”   TESLA ROADSTER’S SPECIAL STEERING WHEEL IN ACTION "Tesla’s next-gen Roadster prototype had an outing this week and it gave us a rare look at the electric hypercar’s special steering wheel in action. When Tesla unveiled the next-gen Roadster prototype back in 2017, it was equipped with a butterfly steering wheel. Butterfly steering wheels are not street legal in most markets, but an engineer at the launch event said that the automaker aims to release it in the production version." according to Fred at Electrek: "It offers very little grip space and for the first time, we clearly see someone doing two rotations for a short turn."   https://electrek.co/2019/06/12/tesla-roadster-steering-wheel-action/   ELECTRIFY AMERICA AND CHARGEPOINT ANNOUNCE INTEROPERABILITY AGREEMENT "If you're an EV driver, you've probably got apps and/or cards for multiple charging networks. It's part of life if you charge in public with much frequency. One of those accounts is probably with Chargepoint. Perhaps you have a membership with the rapidly expanding Electrify America network, too. Pretty soon, though, you'll only need one or the other, as Electrify America and Chargepoint have announced an interoperability agreement, meaning if you're a member of one, you can charge with the other network." says Autoblog: "The partnership, which goes into effect later this year, will combine access to more than 30,000 Level 2 and DC fast chargers. While this may not be super important to current EV drivers, who very well might already be using both networks individually, it simplifies things quite a bit for new adopters to have two of the country's largest networks working together."   https://www.autoblog.com/2019/06/11/electrify-america-chargepoint-network-interoperability/   NORWAY HYDROGEN STATION EXPLODES, TOYOTA AND HYUNDAI HALT SALES "A hydrogen station in Norway experienced an explosion on Monday, and the company who runs the station has since shut down 10 other hydrogen stations, according to several local sources. The station was in a suburb of the country's capital of Oslo. As of now, Nel Hydrogen (company who supplied the hydrogen and equipment) doesn't have an official explanation for the cause of the explosion." reports Autoblog: "Two people were taken to the hospital after the force of the blast caused the airbags to deploy in their car nearby. n response to the incident, both Toyota and Hyundai have halted sales of their hydrogen-powered cars in Norway. The stations that Nel Hydrogen shut down are located across both Norway and other countries in Europe."   https://www.autoblog.com/2019/06/12/norway-hydrogen-station-explodes-toyota-hyundai-halt-sales/   TOYOTA MIRAI GETS DEEPEST DISCOUNT YET—AMID HYDROGEN SHORTAGE "The two modest fuel-cell models you can currently purchase (versus lease) both carry luxury-vehicle prices: a base $59,430 for the 2019 Toyota Mirai and a base $59,345 for the eco-focused Hyundai Nexo Blue. Trade-in or resale value remains an unknown. And at the last time we filled with hydrogen, last October, it cost $17.49 per kilogram—potentially up to a $75 fill for the 312-mile Mirai or a $110 fill for the 380-mile Nexo Blue." says Green Car Reports: "ighly subsidized leases factor in at $349 and $399 per month for the Mirai and Nexo, respectively, or $379 for the other lease-only alternative, the Honda Clarity Fuel Cell. And all three include a big bank of subsidized hydrogen that will help ease at least the cost concern of refueling."   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1123535_toyota-mirai-gets-deepest-discount-yet-in-the-midst-of-hydrogen-shortage   TESLA SOARS PAST 40K TOTAL REGISTRATIONS IN NORWAY, MODEL 3 LEADS THE CHARGE "Tesla soars past 40k total registrations in Norway, Model 3 leads the charge" says Teslarati: "The Model S now makes up about 50% with nearly 20,000 registrations, the Model X at 30% with over 12,000 registrations, and the Model 3 represents about 20% with nearly 8,000 registrations. However, Model 3 sales have consistently represented the majority of Tesla’s month-to-month sales in Norway since the all-electric midsize sedan began arriving in February."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-passes-40k-total-registrations-in-norway/   UK BECOMES FIRST MAJOR NATION TO LEGISLATE NET ZERO EMISSIONS "The United Kingdom has become the first major economy to legislate long-term climate targets this week as outgoing Prime Minister Theresa May announced new legislation on Wednesday which will enshrine into law a net zero emissions by 2050 target." reports Clean Technica: "Even as she is effectively being pushed out the door of Number 10 Downing Street, Prime Minister Theresa May is looking to leave some legacy behind her — other than the catastrophic handling of the UK’s “Brexit” negotiations. Announced on Wednesday, Theresa May said that she would introduce a statutory instrument in Parliament to amend the Climate Change Act of 2008 to enter into law a commitment to “eradicate” the country’s “contribution to climate change by 2050.”   According to the UK government, this legislation is the first among G7 nations and is expected to encourage other major economies to follow the UK’s lead. "   https://cleantechnica.com/2019/06/12/uk-becomes-first-major-nation-to-legislate-net-zero-emissions/   FRANCE TO UPHOLD BAN ON SALE OF FOSSIL FUEL CARS BY 2040 Meanwhile a Reuters report today says: "The French government's new law on mobility will uphold a planned ban on fossil fuel-powered cars by 2040, Transport Minister Elizabeth Borne said on Tuesday. Former environment minister Nicolas Hulot said in July 2017 — at the beginning of President Emmanuel Macron's term — that France aimed to end the sale of gasoline and diesel vehicles by 2040 in a bid to become carbon neutral by 2050. The mobility law will also facilitate the rollout of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, notably by giving the residents of apartment buildings the right to ask for the installation of EV plugs in their parking lots."   https://www.autoblog.com/2019/06/11/france-ban-fossil-fuel-cars-2040/   VOLKSWAGEN DRIVER FAILS TO INFLATE TIRES WITH DC FAST CHARGER "Some electric car stories can really lighten the mood and provide some humor and here is one of such stories from some right-hand-drive market (maybe Victoria, Australia)." says InsideEVs: "As you can see, the two parked an internal combustion engine car at a DC fast charger (which was a bad idea to begin with) and started preparation to inflate the front tires! Can you imagine?   The driver grabbed the CCS Combo 2 plug and quickly figured out it's not going to work. Second try... with CHAdeMO plug didn't help either. Well, we've got a long way to go in regards to raising awareness it seems."   https://insideevs.com/news/354461/video-driver-failed-inflate-tires-fast-charger/     COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Show #473   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 16th May 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   HONDA E READY FOR ORDER IN EUROPE "Honda’s first fully electric series model for the European market – the Honda e – can be reserved here in Europe with immediate effect. The reservation fee, which guarantees interested parties a place on the waiting list to order the electricity, is 800 pounds in the UK." says Electrive today: "Customers who have reserved the Honda e will be invited to their nearest dealer after the official order start in order to place their order and conclude a purchase contract. As far as the official technical data of the Honda e is concerned, it is only known that the range will be over 200 kilometres according to the WLTP standard."   https://www.electrive.com/2019/05/16/honda-e-ready-for-order-in-europe/   TESLA’S ACQUISITION OF MAXWELL TECHNOLOGIES "Tesla today announced the completion of its acquisition of the battery and supercapacitor company Maxwell Technologies. This has been on the cards since early February and is in line with the recent timeline given in Tesla’s Q1 investor call. Maxwell’s battery dry electrode manufacturing process has already been piloted by Tesla, and will allow significant battery cost reductions and energy density improvements." writes Dr Max Holland for Cleantechnica: "Tesla’s current cell costs of around $100/kWh amount to approximately $3.5 billion in battery production costs per year (around 70 kWh per vehicle and 500,000 vehicles). Maxwell’s dry battery electrode manufacturing technology claims to allow a 10–20% cost reduction versus traditional wet-electrode manufacturing techniques."   https://cleantechnica.com/2019/05/16/teslas-acquisition-of-maxwell-technologies-more-thoughts-information/   LILIUM REVEALS NEW AIR TAXI AS IT CELEBRATES MAIDEN FLIGHT Lilium, the Munich-based startup developing a revolutionary on- demand air taxi service, today revealed its new five-seater air taxi prototype for the first time. The unveiling of the new Lilium Jet came as the all-electric aircraft completed its maiden flight in the skies over Germany earlier this month. The full-scale, full-weight prototype is powered by 36 all-electric jet engines that allow it to take-off and land vertically, while achieving remarkably efficient horizontal, or cruise, flight. The simplicity of the aircraft design, with no tail, no rudder, no propellers, no gearbox and only one moving part in the engine not only contributes to the safety and affordability of the aircraft, but it has also allowed the design team to focus their efforts on creating a magical customer experience in the cabin, from panoramic windows to gull-wing doors. With a top speed of 300 km/h and a range of 300km, the Lilium Jet is capable of completing much longer journeys than the majority of its competitors. This is, in part, thanks to the fixed wing design of the aircraft. While drone-based aircraft consume much of their energy keep- ing an aircraft in the air, the Lilium Jet can rely on the lift generated by the fixed wing to do this, meaning it will require less than ten percent of its maximum 2000 horsepower during cruise flight. This efficiency, which is comparable to the energy usage of an electric car over the same distance, means the aircraft would not just be capable of connecting suburbs to city centers and airports to main train stations, but would also deliver affordable high-speed connections across entire regions.   VOLKSWAGEN SAYS EV BATTERIES TO LAST "THE LIFE OF THE CAR" "In an announcement last month, Volkswagen joined Nissan and Tesla as the only automakers to explicitly warranty not just the batteries in its cars but specifically how much life it expects them to retain. Frank Blome, the head of VW's Center of Excellence in Battery Cells, said in an outward facing internal marketing interview that the company expects the battery packs in its upcoming line of ID cars to last "the life of the cars," he said." for GreenCarReports: "Batteries for the Audi E-tron quattro, the first all-electric car from the Volkswagen Group's luxury division come from Korean supplier LG Chem. LG's South Korean rival, SK Innovation, which was just sued by LG Chem at the International Trade Commission, will supply batteries for VW's new products in Europe as well as the U.S. SKI is building new battery factories in Hungary and the U.S. state of Georgia to supply the batteries. In China, VW will rely on local batteries from CATL."   https://www2.greencarreports.com/news/1122910_volkswagen-says-ev-batteries-to-last-the-life-of-the-car   TESLA SUPERCHARGER V3 PRODUCTION UNDERWAY AT GIGAFACTORY 2 "Tesla diversifies its production at the Gigafactory 2 in Buffalo, NY, which now includes also new V3 Supercharger cabinets and other electrical components for Powerwall and Powerpack storage systems." according to InsideEVs: "According to media reports, Tesla decided to add new products at the Gigafactory 2, because the solar business "slumps" to a fraction of installed capacity. The Solar Roof ramp-up didn't reach volume scale and reportedly needs further development/tests, while low sales of standard solar panels forced Panasonic to sell "the great majority" of the solar cells to foreign buyers. Tesla is required to increase the number of employee to 1,460 by the end of April 2020 and it seems that the production of non-solar products is the only safe way to meet the requirements. Currently, the number of Tesla and Panasonic employees is 730 (329 Tesla and 401 Panasonic), above the required 500 by the end of April 2019."   https://insideevs.com/news/349938/tesla-supercharger-v3-production-gigafactory-2/   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Read More About Patreon here EVne.ws/patreon   Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 7th March 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Formula E on terrestrial free TV this weekend, Hong Kong race to be screened live by BBC2.   CARLOS GHOSN RELEASED ON BAIL "An an unusual move in Japan, former Nissan chairman Carlos Ghosn was released on bail Wednesday after 108 days in jail, according to a report in Automotive News." Says Green Car Reports: "Ghosn, who is known as the father of the Nissan Leaf for his work championing the car's production, was arrested in November on charges of allegedly misusing company funds and underreporting his compensation for 10 years. In Japan, criminal suspects are routinely held without bail, and prosecutors can file new charges against jailed suspects to extend their detention, as they had with Ghosn."   “I am innocent and totally committed to vigorously defending myself in a fair trial against these meritless and unsubstantiated accusations,” he said in a statement following his release.   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1121916_japanese-judge-releases-former-nissan-chairman-ghosn-on-bail     SUPERCHARGER V3 CHARGES AT 1000 MILES PER HOUR V3 is a completely new architecture for Supercharging. A new 1MW power cabinet with a similar design to our utility-scale products supports peak rates of up to 250kW per car. At this rate, a Model 3 Long Range operating at peak efficiency can recover up to 75 miles of charge in 5 minutes and charge at rates of up to 1,000 miles per hour. Combined with other improvements we’re announcing today, V3 Supercharging will ultimately cut the amount of time customers spend charging by an average of 50%, as modeled on our fleet data.Supercharger stations with V3’s new power electronics are designed to enable any owner to charge at the full power their battery can take – no more splitting power with a vehicle in the stall next to you. With these significant technical improvements, we anticipate the typical charging time at a V3 Supercharger will drop to around 15 minutes.   On-Route Battery Warmup New Supercharging infrastructure isn’t the only way we are improving our customers’ charging experience. Beginning this week, Tesla is rolling out a new feature called On-Route Battery Warmup. Now, whenever you navigate to a Supercharger station, your vehicle will intelligently heat the battery to ensure you arrive at the optimal temperature to charge, reducing average charge times for owners by 25%.   This combination of higher peak power with V3, dedicated vehicle power allocation across Supercharger sites, and On-Route Battery Warmup enables customers to charge in half the time and Tesla to serve more than twice the number of customers per hour. Additionally, we are also unlocking 145kW charge rates for our 12,000+ V2 Superchargers over the coming weeks. By increasing the number of vehicles we’re able to charge at each Supercharger in a day, the investment we’re making in our network will go significantly further with every V3 station deployed. Paired with other savings, these efficiencies will translate to an increased pace of investment for Superchargers moving forward, with a continued focus on getting to 100% ownership coverage across all regions we operate.   We will increase Model S and X charging speeds via software updates in the coming months. V3 Supercharging will roll out to the wider fleet in an over the air firmware update to all owners in Q2 as more V3 Superchargers come online. Our first non-beta V3 Supercharger site will break ground next month, with North American sites ramping in Q2 and Q3 before coming to Europe and Asia-Pacific in Q4.   So we need to see all of this in the context of the Model Y, the Semi Truck and the Roadster.     PORSCHE TAYCAN DEBUT AND LAUNCH INFORMATION UNVEILED? “We may finally have some much-anticipated information about the Porsche Taycan reveal and deliveries.” “Porsche’s first all-electric car is coming, and many people are extremely excited about its potential. So much so, that orders are already sold out for at least the first year. Reports say that Porsche plans to build about 40,000 cars initially, however, it seems they’re all spoken for at this point. Hybrid Cars were apprised of some information on the Taycan EV Forum. The site came across a tweet from a user whose Porsche rep leaked some new details about the upcoming performance EV’s timeline.”   “It claims that the Taycan will be unveiled this coming September, with deliveries starting in January 2020. As Hybrid Cars points out, the Frankfurt Motor Show is in September, so this might be the case.”   Per my Porsche rep, Porsche has closed down its Deposit program for the US due to high demand, Sep 2019 unveil confirmed, 1mo prior to unveil build out for orders to open up, Jan 2020 deliveries   Dennis C. (@ClarkDennisM)   https://insideevs.com/porsche-taycan-debut-launch-information/amp/     KIA BRINGS E-SOUL TO EUROPE, UPGRADES NIRO HYBRID AND PHEV Kia used the Geneva International Motor Show as the platform to introduce the battery-electric e-Soul to Europe, as well as to reveal new upgrades to the Niro Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid. Every Kia vehicle on show in Geneva employs the brand’s mild-hybrid, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or electric vehicle technology. The e-Soul makes its European debut with a choice of two electric powertrains. Now in its third generation, the Kia e-Soul’s new-generation battery packs—either 64 kWh or 39.2 kWh in capacity—are up to 30% more energy efficient than Europe’s current best-selling electric vehicle. The car is offered in Europe without the option of an internal combustion engine. The new e-Soul goes on-sale in select European markets from the end of the first quarter of 2019, sold as standard with Kia’s 7-year, 150,000-kilometer warranty, which also covers the car’s electric motor and battery pack.   ALL-NEW PEUGEOT E-208 LOOKS DYNAMIC IN GENEVA "The all-new Peugeot 208 with the all-electric e-208 version shown in Geneva in GT trim, raised a lot of interest. The new French subcompact brings to the table completely new dynamic styling." says Mark Kane for InsideEVs: "In the current specification – especially with the 50 kWh battery,  WLTP range of 340 km (211 miles) and 100 kW electric motor – it could be the tamer of the Renault ZOE, but there is one doubt. In several months, ZOE will get major upgrade in the form of a second generation version, which should make both cars at least competitive. Orders will be accepted from late summer 2019 on, while the launch is expected in the fall of 2019."   https://insideevs.com/peugeot-e-208-debut-geneva-photos-videos/amp/   CURRENT BMW I3 TO GET REVAMP RATHER THAN ALL-NEW MODEL “The BMW i3 is entering its seventh year of production, but the electric car will continue to be produced with further updates planned. The BMW i3 will last beyond the usual seven-year model cycle and get further updates, according to the boss of BMW i Division." Reports John McIlroy for AutoExpress: "The electric city car recently received its second battery upgrade, taking the capacity to 120Ah (42.2kWh) and the real-world range to around 160 miles. However, speaking to Auto Express at the recent Geneva Motor Show, i Division chief Robert Irlinger said the latest battery tweaks would not be the last upgrades in the i3’s life - and stressed that the car is not bound by conventional life cycles."   https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/bmw/i3/106240/current-bmw-i3-to-get-revamp-rather-than-all-new-model   NISSAN TO INTRODUCE E-POWER MODELS IN EUROPE Nissan unveiled the IMQ concept crossover, equipped with its award-winning e-POWER system, and announced it will launch the electrified powertrain technology in Europe. The technology will debut in European markets by 2022, Roel de Vries, Nissan corporate vice president, said at the Geneva International Motor Show. e-POWER has been a hit with consumers in Japan, where it’s helped make the Nissan Note the country’s best-selling registered car. Combining 100% electric motor drive with a gasoline engine that charges the battery, e-POWER cars give customers instant, smooth acceleration and excellent fuel efficiency. Introducing the technology in Europe will reinforce Nissan’s leadership in electrified vehicles in the region, where the Nissan LEAF is already the best-selling electric car. Building on the success of LEAF, e-POWER will be among a suite of new technologies coming to Nissan’s best-selling vehicles in Europe in the coming three years. By 2022 sales of electrified Nissan vehicles will increase five-fold, and by the end of that year will be double the market average.       COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. He didn't directly explain the move, but said "yes" when a Twitter user asked if Tesla was moving away from its longstanding use of battery capacity numbers to denote variants." reports Engadget: "If the starter Model S and X models disappeared with no rough equivalent in place, that would raise the starter prices by $15,000 or more, to $84,750 (from $66,750) and $87,950 (from $72,950) respectively." But why do that? Could it be they just weren't selling many of them? Would they prefer a base S & X buyer to buy a top spec'd Model 3 because they make more margin? Tesla are unquestionably better at making cars now. com say they have a possible answer: "The most logical reasoning for the discontinuation is that Tesla is taking down its 75 kWh pack line to upgrade to a cheaper/more efficient architecture that can handle the V3 Supercharger. Since the 100D’s are Tesla’s highest margin vehicles, Tesla will be able to decrease their cost substantially because Tesla no longer has to cover the lower margin 75D’s in its sales mix." writes Dan Zorilla. My thought: they need to update the S& X, both inside and out, plus under the skin. Carry on making 100kWh packs for now, and change some 18650 production at Giga to 2170. Then introduce a Standard Range and a Long Range S & X. The lines will be more efficient, Tesla will make a better margin, the cells will charge quicker and the largest pack size could go to something like 120 or 125kWh. Gigafactory plays a huge part in this, and you know my favourite topic is to bang on about the effect of Tesla Grohmann Automation!   https://www.engadget.com/2019/01/09/tesla-to-stop-selling-75kwh-model-s-x/   https://insideevs.com/tesla-model-s-x-discontinuation-analysis/   VW IS SETTING UP ELECTRIC CAR CHARGING STATIONS IN CHINA "Volkswagen AG is setting up a network of fast-charging stations in China with local partners as part of its multibillion-dollar push to boost electric-vehicle sales in the world’s largest market, people familiar with the matter said." according to Bloomberg today: "Talks for the venture are near completion and it is scheduled to be set up in the first half of this year, the people said. SAIC Motor Corp., another VW partner, is ready to get on board, with more Chinese auto and battery makers expected to join in future, the people said."   https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-01-10/vw-is-said-to-set-up-china-venture-for-charging-electric-cars?utm_content=business&utm_source=twitter&utm_campaign=socialflow-organic&cmpid=socialflow-twitter-business&utm_medium=social   TESLA’S GETS SOME LOVE FROM GERMAN AUTO EXECUTIVE According to Teslarati: "Gigafactory 1’s battery production capabilities...achieved an annualized run rate of 20 GWh last year .For BMW Deputy Chairman of the Supervisory Board Manfred Schoch, Tesla’s long-term play on electric car batteries was a strategic decision. In a recent interview with German publication Manager Magazin, the BMW executive remarked that Tesla’s high investments for Gigafactory 1 are well-spent. Schoch also praised Elon Musk’s decision to closely collaborate with Panasonic early on to produce batteries at a large scale." He said: "“Tesla controls the entire value chain; they understood electromobility. Our board members should finally deal more intensively with this gentleman, who should have been bankrupt by now. In the (auto) industry, too much is complained, and too much is declared impossible."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-ev-batteries-gigafactory-bmw-manfred-schoch/   GRAB SAYS 'RIGHT TIME' TO INTRODUCE ELECTRIC VEHICLES, SET TO ROLL OUT 200 HYUNDAI KONAS "Ride-hailing firm Grab is set to roll out 200 electric vehicles (EVs) into Singapore's streets progressively from Friday (Jan 11)." reports Channel News Asia: "Having purchased 200 Hyundai Kona 64 kWH electric cars, Grab will release an initial batch of 20 vehicles on Friday with the rest being introduced over the next few weeks, head of the company's car leasing service GrabRentals, Kau Yi Ming said in an interview with local media."   https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/grab-says-right-time-to-introduce-electric-vehicles-set-to-roll-11105376   ELON MUSK SAYS NEW TESLA ROADSTER WILL FLY "Elon Musk released a new message “The new Roadster will actually do something like this” with an attached animation of a futuristic (“Back To The Future”) vehicle with some kind of rocket boosters" says Mark Kane over at InsideEVs.com. So it's 2019 now and time for race 2, in Africa and Marrakesh. At the first race there was rain in Saudi Arabia and confusion over how to race by the new rules, so it confused the pack a bit. This weekend we'll see who is real out ahead. We'll see the debut of former F1 star Pascal Wehrlein too.   It's 8am Pacific, 11am Eastern and 4pm UK on Saturday.   FORD SAYS FORMULA E AN OPTION FOR THE FUTURE Mark Rushbrook, global head of Ford Performance Motorsports, told Motorsport.com that FE was "still on the sheet of paper we are looking at" as it considers an entry into what he called "electrified motorsport". His comments come a year after Ford was engaged in high-level talks with FE and appeared close to signing up for the series. Rushbrook insisted that there is "still room" for Ford on the FE grid even though it will hit its 12-team, 24-car capacity with the arrival of Porsche in season six in 2019/20. The US manufacturer is evaluating its future in motorsport as it looks beyond its present commitment to the Ford GT programme, which is confirmed until the end of the 2018/19 WEC and the 2019 IMSA season.   https://www.motorsport.com/formula-e/news/ford-entry-formula-e-possible/4321373/   HONDA DELAYS ITS FUN RETRO-LOOKING ALL-ELECTRIC VEHICLE TO 2020, REPORT SAYS A new report about the Honda Urban EV from Electrek says: "Honda’s first next-gen all-electric vehicle was supposed to go on sale this year, but the production has been pushed to “early 2020", the report claims that Honda is planning to show two iterations of the vehicle before starting production.
