From the December 7th podcast: This podcast discusses a deep low pressure system that is forecast to develop 5 days after this podcast was made. There is high confidence in this storm system tapping in to copious amounts of Gulf moisture. An Arctic airmass is expected to dig south and collide with this system. This is expected to be a major storm system which will effect the Midwest and South Central States. Although in recent times there has been a lack of confidence in forecasts in general....but with this storm there is high confidence. Toranodo potential is expected to be unseasonably high and even surpassing the tornado event at the very end of November. The European Model which I accessed shows this being a "Colorado Low". In general, this is not the most ideal storm track to bring heavy Snow to a city like Chicago, but in recent times it has brought 2 feet of snow more than once in the Dakota's. The amount of moisture available is more important than the storm track. Should the storm track end up being a "panhandle hook" this will add confidence to the high moisture content expected. It's also possible that the amount of moisture would go up. When "panhandle hook" storms move across the Midwest and effect a city like St.Louis then snow amounts of 6+ inches would be expected and occasionally even 12+. With A Colorado Low, usually amounts would be half this amount. Although when these systems effect the upper Midwest the snowfall accumulations seem to be higher, they are not on par with a panhandle hook. Nonetheless, a forecast of 6 - 24 inches with a greater emphasis on 12+ than 6 + is expressed in this podcast. This storm will effect the Midwest mid-week next week. This would mean Tuesday, Wednesday and at this point possibly Thursday. In fact the system is expected to slow down and bring an extended spell of preciptation. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/weather-with-enthusiasm/support

SPEAKERSJim du Bois, Kenny Blumenfeld Jim du Bois 00:00Ah, it's September. This is Way Over Our Heads. It's a weather and climate podcast. I'm Jim du Bois. Kenny Blumenfeld's a climatologist. Kenny, my goodness, the switch has been thrown. It was 51 degrees in my backyard when I woke up this morning. Kenny Blumenfeld 00:18Yeah, you're right. I mean, it's just like that first day of school whether right? Jim du Bois 00:22Right. Kenny Blumenfeld 00:22Although it's not really the first day of school in a lot of places but has that feeling that you get after Labor Day where, yeah, it's actually chilly. I woke up and I thought, oh, my goodness, I have to wear long sleeves biking into work today. Jim du Bois 00:37The temperature this morning was 34 degrees somewhere in Minnesota. And I can't remember where, Bemidji? Or was it, was it Hibbing? I can't remember, my goodness. Kenny Blumenfeld 00:47So, it's okay. Because what's interesting is the various media personalities will often go through the various airports that report generally hourly. And so, you can get kind of real time temperature data from them. What's interesting is in the climate office, we generally don't include those as valid readings. So, there might be an airport, for example, Grand Rapids, or maybe Big Fork or something like that that reports a really low temperature. We wait until, and I think you know about this, Jim, the daily temperature and precipitation readers who use a little higher quality instrumentation that's more standardized, we wait for their data to come in. And that's usually not until the next morning, although sometimes it's the same morning, depending on what time they take their observation. So, it'll be a few hours before we know what the lowest temperature around Minnesota was. But you're right, here on Monday, the 13th of September, we definitely had some northern Minnesota airport stations that were in the 30s. The Ely airport, even at 8am, was still in the 30s, for example. So, well, you can get frost just about any time of year way up north but we're definitely entering that that frost season in northern Minnesota. Jim du Bois 02:11Well, Kenny, you and I have talked about this before in previous episodes. And it always seems that right after the State Fair, right after Labor Day, that somehow a switch is thrown, and it goes from...rather abruptly I might add some times, from summer to fall. And we certainly have noticed that waking up some mornings when there's been a certain crispness in the air that wasn't there in late August. And today was the day it really kind of hit me in the, in the face when I got up this morning and I thought it is downright chilly this morning. And there was a lot of dew on the grass, so it was kind of damp. But I thought this has not only the feel but kind of the smell of fall too. Kenny Blumenfeld 02:53Oh, the smell of fall. I love it. And you know pretty soon, and maybe even this morning, walk along by the creek or by an area lake, and you'll see that steam rising off of it. That's the, ooohhh, that's, that's, that's a good one. Because what that is, is the warmer water left over from the hot summer, you know, in any summer. But this summer in particular, we didn't have much water, so it was easy for it to get warm. And then you see that steam because that's the water essentially, the warm water, basically being evaporated into the cooler air. And the way that that works is really interesting. The water essentially warms the air right above it. And then that warm air then pulls some of the water off of the surface and puts it into the atmosphere as humidity. So, you see that steam, and then it, and then it very quickly saturates that air right above the, right above the water. So, you see this steam coming off, and it's a sign that your water is cooling down fairly rapidly, in fact, and we tend to lose a lot of standing water, you know, basically, through early November from about early, early, mid-September right into early November, you lose a lot to evaporation. But what you're, what you're observing, Jim is, you know, it's all those terms that people, I say a typical person slept through or tried not to pay attention to. But as you get into fall, the intensity and the duration of sunlight declines. And that shuts down--here's the big one, Jim--photosynthesis, and without, and remember, the easy way of thinking of photosynthesis is that's just sunlight, activating living things, plants, and when the photosynthesis shuts down because the sunlight intensity and duration isn't great enough, then the plants stop essentially sustaining themselves. So, all of those seasonal plants, hardwood trees and grasses in particular, and many crops, they just stop production. And once they stop production, they, they stop sharing moisture that they conduct through their various systems with the atmosphere, the atmosphere gets a little bit drier. We're not quite at that point yet. But on a good cool morning, you can certainly notice that, you know, some of the things have really slowed down. Jim du Bois 05:18Well, we did bid farewell to meteorological summer on August 31. We now of course are in meteorological fall. Astronomical fall still a little ways off for us. So Kenny, let's go back and look at the month of August. What was August like for us from a climate perspective? Kenny Blumenfeld 05:35Yeah, so August was another warm month. It was a good warm month, but it wasn't like June. But it was, you know, it was up there. And it had highly varied rainfall. So basically, if you lived in the southern part of the state and parts of western Minnesota, you actually did pretty well with precipitation during August, above normal from the Twin Cities West northwestward through Alexandria, all the way south to the Iowa border. Parts of far southeastern Minnesota got absolutely dumped on again. There actually, there's no drought in far southeastern Minnesota. And then, you know, kind of hit or miss areas in western and northwestern Minnesota also had above normal precipitation in August, but then a big swath of northeast Minnesota failed to have normal precipitation again. This was the area, you know, St. Louis and Lake and parts of Cook County, way up in far northeast Minnesota, where they struggled to get even two inches of precipitation. So uniformly, it was warm. across the state. There was actually more heat in terms of hot weather in northern Minnesota than in southern Minnesota. So for example, Jim, International Falls had eight days, 90 degrees or higher. So, you should have been in International Falls, Twin Cities only had four of those days during August. Rochester had none. So, it was an interesting kind of reversal of the geographic pattern of hot weather. You know, it really just had to do with the configuration of the high pressure and low pressure systems that were affecting us. But yeah, so it was kind of a hot month in northern Minnesota and more of a warm month in in southern Minnesota. And then it was very wet in parts of southern Minnesota, and very dry in northeast Minnesota. And that kind of capped off the whole summer. Is that where you're going to go next, ask about... Jim du Bois 07:34Absolutely. What was the summer of 2021 like for us in Minnesota? Kenny Blumenfeld 07:39Well, you know, here in the climate office, we've been kind of battling some misconceptions that folks have, because when you look at the average seasonal temperature across, across the state of Minnesota, it's actually the second highest that we have on record. So, it was a warm summer for sure. second only to 1988. And that's true in a few places. And several individual locations actually had their warmest summer on record. The misconception that we're kind of working with, you know, is that people tend to say, oh, well, it's the hottest summer on record. Well, here's the thing, what is hot? You know, I know how Jim du Bois, he likes it, he likes it, he likes it 90 or better. Jim du Bois 08:28Yes. Kenny Blumenfeld 08:29He wants to he, he wants to earn his relief. You know, whatever lemonade, he's gonna drink later on. He wants to earn it. And I think that's how a lot of us really think of hot weather. If it's, if it's 90 or higher, or maybe you have, you know, really, like the highest temperature of the summer is higher, or as high as anything you've observed. We didn't have that. International Falls is probably the one station, and there's a couple sprinkled around northern Minnesota, where we have to give it to them. They had legitimately hot summers by their own standards. So, far northern Minnesota, it was a hot hot summer, and it was potentially the hottest on record. But when you look into southern and central Minnesota, and that's where a lot of these terms are being generated, you know, around the Twin Cities, this was nowhere near our hottest summer because we've had summers, you know, we didn't even rank in the top 10 for a number of days above 90 degrees. And our highest temperature of summer didn't even crack 100 degrees in the Twin Cities. And you know, you've got a couple dozen other years where that did happen. So, you know, it was a very warm summer, no doubt about it. And we saw some of the highest temperatures that we have recorded on an seasonally averaged basis. That means you take the average from June, July and August. No doubt about it, warm, warm summer, and some parts of the state were hot. We just aren't comfortable saying this was our hottest summer yet because anybody who experienced 1988 would say, yeah, what about that one? Or people who just know the history and know what happened in say 1936, for example, when, you know, there was 14 days in July in a row where the temperature was 90 or higher, and I think something like eight of those days, it was over 100 degrees and including our all time high temperature record. And since we weren't anywhere near those types of metrics, you know, this is where, you know, dorky climatologists get, you know, we just like to keep people on message a little bit here. Because if you live in Portland, Oregon, for example, they absolutely had some of the hottest weather they ever recorded. No doubt about that. And we can't really claim to have had the same experience that Portland had. And we want to make sure we use those types of terms when we know we did have that kind of summer, and we haven't had that one yet. So hopefully, it's not coming. But you know, gosh, seems like almost anything can happen now. Jim du Bois 11:11How is our drought situation shaping up? Kenny Blumenfeld 11:14Yeah, that's a good question. So you probably noticed, Jim, nice, green lush vegetation in South Minneapolis. Jim du Bois 11:22Oh, yes. It came back, it came back. Kenny Blumenfeld 11:23Yeah, I think that, you know, Minnehaha Falls came to life. This allows, I think people in southern Minnesota in particular to kind of forget what else is going on. So, in the Twin Cities area, we got a good push of precipitation. And certainly southern Minnesota has done better. We still have large deficits, anywhere from four to eight inches, depending on where you are in most of southern Minnesota. Parts of southeastern Minnesota, there's effectively no long term deficit now. And so, it's not clear how long they'll remain in official drought conditions. But in northern Minnesota where the precipitation was a little more spotty, and in many cases, scarce, the drought, if anything intensified during August. And you know, I think if I were in northeast Minnesota with all the fires from the summer, I would not be resting on our laurels just yet, because they didn't get as much precipitation as other parts of the state. And they're coming into that same thing, we just described the whole mechanism that makes it crisp in the fall. That also dries out standing, living vegetation. So, if you've already had really dry conditions, and then the dry season kicks in where you don't have photosynthesis so you don't have that evapo- transpiration where the water comes out of the plants and goes into the atmosphere, that's really when the main fire weather season is. So, parts of northeastern Minnesota have a two year deficit going back to February of 2020. So, it's like 18 or 19 months deficit on the order of a foot of rainfall or precipitation. So, they're really low. They need more precipitation. They're coming into their dry season. Much of northern Minnesota is still in that extreme level of drought officially, and we still have a little swath of northwestern Minnesota, kind of from the International Falls area through Red Lake that remains in what's called D4 or exceptional drought, the highest level of drought on the US Drought Monitor. So, I would say southern Minnesota can feel a bit better. We're still behind, but we're in a much better position than northern Minnesota where they haven't had as much help and where the deficits are much larger. Jim du Bois 12:38So, what do the weather trends look like in the days and maybe weeks ahead? Anything interesting that you've seen? Kenny Blumenfeld 13:52Yeah, actually, the most interesting thing starts I mean, there's one shot today, that's Monday, September 13. I don't think it's a major outbreak of severe weather. But you know, the Storm Prediction Center has indicated slight risk of severe weather over parts of southern Minnesota, basically south of the Twin Cities. I think I-90, that kind of I-90 area, and maybe a little bit north into say Mankato and Red Wing. So, a chance for severe weather this evening. And heavy rain will also be possible over parts of southern and central Minnesota. Again, I don't think this is the event of the year at all, but there's a chance that, you know, decent signal that some areas are going to get another one to two inches, kind of I don't know if it's irony, but a lot of that rain looks most likely in the areas that you know, needed the least. They'll take it. I think it's good to put it in the bank. When you're in a drought, put as much water in the bank as you can, but there are parts in northeastern Minnesota that it probably won't see anything from this. Then we move into a really warm pattern especially as we get, you know, later into the week and into the weekend. The outlook from the Climate Prediction Center has an 80% chance likelihood of being above normal for temperatures in the six to 10 day period. And in the eight to 14 day period. So, we're getting, you know, right around the Fall Equinox and slightly after that. So, you know, September 18, through basically 25th or so 26, that period has a very high likelihood of being above normal for temperatures. And depending on where in the state you are potentially anyway, above normal for precipitation. Essentially, what the models are showing as we move into kind of a warm and stormy pattern. And we've seen this before, my colleague and I will joke about oh, every time it looks like the whole state of Minnesota is about to get really warm and really wet, it ends up being that southern Minnesota gets pounded and northern Minnesota just gets hot, so I'm not betting on anything yet. All I know is that the professional forecasters are looking ahead and seeing a lot of precipitation chances. The European Model, which is one of the highly regarded forecasting models, shows several inches of precipitation over parts of Minnesota over the next 9, 10 days. Again, is that really what's going to happen, or is it just going to hit Rochester again? That right now, I can't tell you, but it does look like a warmer pattern, you know, so another chance of showers and thunderstorms on Thursday. And then again over the weekend. And then again, we get into a really warm pattern by the end of the weekend where we could have some 90s creeping back into Minnesota, if things hold up for Sunday. Jim du Bois 16:43Well, it may be meteorological fall, but it sounds like summer-like weather is going to persist for a while. Kenny Blumenfeld 16:50Yeah, I mean, you'll like it, Jim. I'll like it too, I think, you know, it'll still be relatively humid. So, we're not yet to that hot, dry type of fall weather that sometimes you get. So we'll have to see. It's not quite the same as what you get in July. But you know, it could be an interesting time. So starting with today, thunderstorms very likely over parts of southern and central Minnesota. Almost guaranteed somewhere in that region this evening with severe weather most likely south of the Twin Cities. And then other chances late in the week and over the weekend. Jim du Bois 17:27Well, keep an eye on the sky and an ear or an eye to your favorite source of weather information. And Kenny, great chatting with you as always. Enjoy and we'll check in with you again next week. Kenny Blumenfeld 17:39Great, thanks. Good talking with you too. Jim. Jim du Bois 17:41This is Way Over Our Heads. Sunny Dhadley FRSA is a consultant, coach and motivational speaker. For 10 years he was programme lead for the Wolverhampton Service User Involvement Team, in connection with which he was shortlisted for Public Servant of the Year 2018. Sunny was initially brought up in a multicultural area until he was six or seven. Then he moved to a predominantly white council estate. Nonetheless he felt at home there. It wasn't until he won a scholarship to a local grammar school that he felt alienated and became involved in gangs, street violence and illicit drugs. This led to him using and then becoming addicted to heroin and crack cocaine. He came to a point where he realised that he had to change or end up in prison or dead. He carried out his own detox programme at his parent's house. Three days after he finished he got married and went to Bali for his honeymoon. When he came back he volunteered for the Wolverhampton Service User Involvement Team. Wolvehampton Service User Involvement Team (SUIT) was established by the Council to vet and critique their services from a user standpoint. Sunny progressed from volunteer to project worker to leader within a five month period, and then went on to lead that organisation for over 10 years. By the time he left it had become a service in its own right, mentoring and supporting addicts and former addicts, and had been cited twice as a European Model of Best Practice. One the ways Sunny coped with his meteoric rise to leadership was by staying curious. He was prepared to admit what he didn't know and keen to probe issue in depth. He left in the middle of the organisation's success to practice what he preached. He had always tried to promote a mindset of learning and growth among SUIT's clients and now he wanted to initiate a further phase of growth in his own life. He left his successor with seven years of funding to continue the work of SUIT. Since leaving SUIT, Sunny has been able to spend more time with his children and has started to grow a business around consultancy and speaking. He has given a https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93d-LWVAhWY (TEDx talk) and has been an ambassador for a political party. He has supported the development of the Lived Experience Movement, providing a voice to people who have experienced social harms in their lives. His Wolverhampton TEDx talk touches on the deep-rooted societal factors behind drug addiction, and the main reason for the success of SUIT was a perspective that embraced the whole of the addict's experience, including healthcare, housing, justice, education, and social networks. Fundamentally the service was based on compassion. Sunny believes that current UK drug policy causes more harm than good. The “War on Drugs” turned into a war on people that used drugs, disproportionately affecting the poor and traumatized. Sunny believes that the Government should legalise, tax and regulate the drugs market. Additionally, any enlightened drugs policy needs to consider the livelihood of the people who currently deal in drugs as a way of making a living. Sunny has written about the ‘Lived Experience' of people suffering from hardships for both NHS Digital and the Conservative Drug Reform Group. He believes that the involvement of people with lived experience in the design of services and the development of policy is often tokenistic and that a deeper commitment to lived experience would greatly enhance the quality of the solutions that we devise to societal problems. He's recently qualified as an Agile Project Manager. He believes that Agile approaches could help bring more efficiency to the public sector. Sunny is an Independent Ambassador for the Labour Party. In 2018 he completed a parliamentary shadowing programme. He would “never say never” to a career in politics, but in the meantime he is dedicated to helping the world in whatever way he can. Sunny's leadership philosophy follows from his philosophy of life, in that he believes
Sunny has had an incredible life journey which he uses as an example to help and improve others. In this episode Sunny shares how he is using his lived experience as a former drug addict to shape government policy on drugs and substance misuse, along with his belief that all government policy should be formed by those with lived experience to ensure maximum positive impact. Sunny Dhadley is a Social Leader with lived experience of addiction. He has developed a peer led model that is revered for its effectiveness, professionalism and integrity (noted through receiving the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2014 and in 2018 being highlighted as a European Model of Best Practice - BeTrad). Sunny is a Fellow of the RSA and part of the Windsor Leadership Alumni. Recently shortlisted for The Guardian Public Service Awards in 2018, Sunny has continued to push the boundaries in relation to practice and policy and is a living example of the potential that lies within each person that is vulnerable and/or marginalised within society.Contact Sunny:https://sunnydhadley.com/https://www.linkedin.com/in/sunnydhadley/?originalSubdomain=ukhttps://www.instagram.com/sunnydhadley/https://www.facebook.com/SocialLeadershipGuy/posts/https://twitter.com/sunnydhadley#LetsDoHumans #SocialChange #StayBlessedFollow us:Castbox- https://castbox.fm/channel/LetsDoHuma...Instagram- https://www.instagram.com/letsdohumans/iTunes- https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/l...Facebook- https://www.facebook.com/LetsDoHumans/Spotify- https://open.spotify.com/show/119kKxj...Twitter- https://twitter.com/letsdohumansHost: https://www.instagram.com/mrtudark/ (Francis Gyamera)Want to feature on Lets Do Humans or have any ideas and suggestion? Guest: Dr. Peter Bauer, ECMWF Deputy Director of Research & Head of the Scalability ProgrammeIntroduction: I need more power…!! Computing power that is. This has been a major focus for numerical weather prediction in hopes of creating more accurate and detailed predictions of Earth’s systems. The highly touted European Model has long been one of the leaders in numerical weather prediction performance. As the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) prepares to integrate the next generation of supercomputers, model efficiency may suffer as more data is computed at higher resolutions. Current processing capabilities and codes are not adapted to meet these needs. Today’s guest, Dr. Peter Bauer, will outline how they are working with meteorological modellers, computer scientists and hardware providers to make sure the EURO is ready for this upgrade.
Data belongs into the hands of those who have produced it. In order to achieve this Europe needs a new model to tackle the digital revolution. Then JONATHAN PRICE UK signed up as a PRODUCER. And GREG BAILEY as PRODUCER. Over the weekend new EXEC PRODUCER MICHAEL KYFFIN (KUFFIN). And new PRODUCERS GILL NOWELL and MARK SANDERS. As if that wasn't enough, PAUL RIDINGS moved up to EXEC PRODUCER. And then three new PRODUCERS MICHAEL YOUNG, STEPHEN BROOK and MIKE IN OKLAHOMA. RENAULT ZOE NEO ZE50 As a Renault Zoe owner I am looking forward to the new one, the ZE50 or Zoe Neo, or whatever we're calling it. The embargo gets lifted Monday and I haven't been told anything so this is all speculation. But a 50kWh battery, with CCS plug and 22kW AC charging makes for a very flexible car. And not one of the Dutch journalists who attended Paris this week for the media day and took pics, has posted them online. They've kept the styling rather than make it look like a Clio with batteries. It will allow these cars to charge at up to 200 kW which equates to 850 miles per hour of range recovery. This means the fastest-charging cars in the world will be European Model 3 Long Range — charging on European ultrafast charging networks (such as Ionity, Fastned, and Allego). “As we work towards the introduction of V3 Supercharging in Europe, we’re releasing an early software update to European Model 3 Long Range customers that will allow them to charge at hundreds of third party fast-charging stations – up to 200kW. When our own V3 Supercharger technology is introduced, these cars will be able to charge even faster at 250kW peak charge rates. Tesla vehicles benefit from the most extensive charging network in the world by having access to Tesla chargers like our Supercharger network, as well as publicly-available EV charging networks.” TESLA ROADSTER’S SPECIAL STEERING WHEEL IN ACTION "Tesla’s next-gen Roadster prototype had an outing this week and it gave us a rare look at the electric hypercar’s special steering wheel in action. When Tesla unveiled the next-gen Roadster prototype back in 2017, it was equipped with a butterfly steering wheel. Butterfly steering wheels are not street legal in most markets, but an engineer at the launch event said that the automaker aims to release it in the production version." according to Fred at Electrek: "It offers very little grip space and for the first time, we clearly see someone doing two rotations for a short turn." https://electrek.co/2019/06/12/tesla-roadster-steering-wheel-action/ ELECTRIFY AMERICA AND CHARGEPOINT ANNOUNCE INTEROPERABILITY AGREEMENT "If you're an EV driver, you've probably got apps and/or cards for multiple charging networks. It's part of life if you charge in public with much frequency. One of those accounts is probably with Chargepoint. Perhaps you have a membership with the rapidly expanding Electrify America network, too. Pretty soon, though, you'll only need one or the other, as Electrify America and Chargepoint have announced an interoperability agreement, meaning if you're a member of one, you can charge with the other network." says Autoblog: "The partnership, which goes into effect later this year, will combine access to more than 30,000 Level 2 and DC fast chargers. While this may not be super important to current EV drivers, who very well might already be using both networks individually, it simplifies things quite a bit for new adopters to have two of the country's largest networks working together." https://www.autoblog.com/2019/06/11/electrify-america-chargepoint-network-interoperability/ NORWAY HYDROGEN STATION EXPLODES, TOYOTA AND HYUNDAI HALT SALES "A hydrogen station in Norway experienced an explosion on Monday, and the company who runs the station has since shut down 10 other hydrogen stations, according to several local sources. The station was in a suburb of the country's capital of Oslo. As of now, Nel Hydrogen (company who supplied the hydrogen and equipment) doesn't have an official explanation for the cause of the explosion." reports Autoblog: "Two people were taken to the hospital after the force of the blast caused the airbags to deploy in their car nearby. n response to the incident, both Toyota and Hyundai have halted sales of their hydrogen-powered cars in Norway. The stations that Nel Hydrogen shut down are located across both Norway and other countries in Europe." https://www.autoblog.com/2019/06/12/norway-hydrogen-station-explodes-toyota-hyundai-halt-sales/ TOYOTA MIRAI GETS DEEPEST DISCOUNT YET—AMID HYDROGEN SHORTAGE "The two modest fuel-cell models you can currently purchase (versus lease) both carry luxury-vehicle prices: a base $59,430 for the 2019 Toyota Mirai and a base $59,345 for the eco-focused Hyundai Nexo Blue. Trade-in or resale value remains an unknown. And at the last time we filled with hydrogen, last October, it cost $17.49 per kilogram—potentially up to a $75 fill for the 312-mile Mirai or a $110 fill for the 380-mile Nexo Blue." says Green Car Reports: "ighly subsidized leases factor in at $349 and $399 per month for the Mirai and Nexo, respectively, or $379 for the other lease-only alternative, the Honda Clarity Fuel Cell. And all three include a big bank of subsidized hydrogen that will help ease at least the cost concern of refueling." https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1123535_toyota-mirai-gets-deepest-discount-yet-in-the-midst-of-hydrogen-shortage TESLA SOARS PAST 40K TOTAL REGISTRATIONS IN NORWAY, MODEL 3 LEADS THE CHARGE "Tesla soars past 40k total registrations in Norway, Model 3 leads the charge" says Teslarati: "The Model S now makes up about 50% with nearly 20,000 registrations, the Model X at 30% with over 12,000 registrations, and the Model 3 represents about 20% with nearly 8,000 registrations. However, Model 3 sales have consistently represented the majority of Tesla’s month-to-month sales in Norway since the all-electric midsize sedan began arriving in February." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-passes-40k-total-registrations-in-norway/ UK BECOMES FIRST MAJOR NATION TO LEGISLATE NET ZERO EMISSIONS "The United Kingdom has become the first major economy to legislate long-term climate targets this week as outgoing Prime Minister Theresa May announced new legislation on Wednesday which will enshrine into law a net zero emissions by 2050 target." reports Clean Technica: "Even as she is effectively being pushed out the door of Number 10 Downing Street, Prime Minister Theresa May is looking to leave some legacy behind her — other than the catastrophic handling of the UK’s “Brexit” negotiations. Announced on Wednesday, Theresa May said that she would introduce a statutory instrument in Parliament to amend the Climate Change Act of 2008 to enter into law a commitment to “eradicate” the country’s “contribution to climate change by 2050.” According to the UK government, this legislation is the first among G7 nations and is expected to encourage other major economies to follow the UK’s lead. " https://cleantechnica.com/2019/06/12/uk-becomes-first-major-nation-to-legislate-net-zero-emissions/ FRANCE TO UPHOLD BAN ON SALE OF FOSSIL FUEL CARS BY 2040 Meanwhile a Reuters report today says: "The French government's new law on mobility will uphold a planned ban on fossil fuel-powered cars by 2040, Transport Minister Elizabeth Borne said on Tuesday. Former environment minister Nicolas Hulot said in July 2017 — at the beginning of President Emmanuel Macron's term — that France aimed to end the sale of gasoline and diesel vehicles by 2040 in a bid to become carbon neutral by 2050. The mobility law will also facilitate the rollout of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, notably by giving the residents of apartment buildings the right to ask for the installation of EV plugs in their parking lots." https://www.autoblog.com/2019/06/11/france-ban-fossil-fuel-cars-2040/ VOLKSWAGEN DRIVER FAILS TO INFLATE TIRES WITH DC FAST CHARGER "Some electric car stories can really lighten the mood and provide some humor and here is one of such stories from some right-hand-drive market (maybe Victoria, Australia)." says InsideEVs: "As you can see, the two parked an internal combustion engine car at a DC fast charger (which was a bad idea to begin with) and started preparation to inflate the front tires! Can you imagine? The driver grabbed the CCS Combo 2 plug and quickly figured out it's not going to work. Second try... with CHAdeMO plug didn't help either. Well, we've got a long way to go in regards to raising awareness it seems." https://insideevs.com/news/354461/video-driver-failed-inflate-tires-fast-charger/ COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Can You Help Me Fight The Fossils? Read More About Patreon here EVne.ws/patreon Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 8th February 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I can find today, and picked out the ones I think you need to know about. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. MODEL 3 IN EUROPE – GROWING PAINS, FIRST DELIVERY Simon at Teslarati kicks us off with an Elon tweet about the logistics challenges of unloading thousands of TEsla's from a ship in Belgium and getting them to customers: "The arrival of the cargo ship Glovis Captain on the port of Zeebrugge earlier this week heralded new opportunities and challenges for electric car maker Tesla. The massive vessel is estimated to be carrying around 3,000 Model 3, which are expected to start an electric disruption in Europe’s passenger car market. At the same time, the arrival of the highly-anticipated sedan also means that deliveries to reservation holders in the region are about to begin. Soon, social media posts from the Tesla community revealed that the first Model 3 deliveries in Europe were already underway. That said, it did not take long before Tesla became unable to deliver as many vehicles as they estimated." On Wednesday, Elon Musk took to Twitter to apologize for the delivery delay in Europe." elonmusk: "Sorry, many unexpected challenges with cars coming through Zeebrugge first time. Cars will start moving out in volume tomorrow." Look, it's a three year wait, another day is fine. People just like to have a moan online because they got bumped by a day. Also this was a self-made problem. Tesla brought forward the delivery dates, some by quite a way, and then had to delay by a day causing disappointment. In on a way Tesla could and we love them for it. Meanwhile Kyle Field at CleanTechnica was one of the first to pick up on a Tweet from the first owner to get his car: "The first European customer has taken delivery of his Tesla Model 3 today after what felt like an endless stream of delays since it was first announced nearly 3 years ago. Fred is from Oldenzaal in the Netherlands and has been a long-time supporter of Tesla, even going so far as to travel to the Tesla “mothership” at its automotive factory in Fremont, California, to lobby for the Netherlands. Opening up its higher end configurations of the Tesla Model 3 to European and Chinese customers allows the company to continue building higher margin vehicles as it puts the finishing touches on the Standard Range vehicle." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-3-logistical-challenges-europe-deliveries/ https://cleantechnica.com/2019/02/07/the-first-european-customer-takes-delivery-of-a-tesla-model-3/ GM ELECTRIC VEHICLES COULD BE PROFITABLE EARLY NEXT DECADE, SAYS CEO "Incentives, credits, and compliance schemes can only get the electric vehicle market so far. The real test of its success will be when large, established automakers can get to a point when they can call them profitable." says Green Car Reprts: "On Wednesday, on a call with analysts to discuss the company’s fourth-quarter 2018 financial results, GM CEO Mary Barra said that’s a distinction could come in the early 2020s.Barra reiterated yesterday that GM believes in an all-EV future, and noted that the company is being repositioned “from one that was trying to be all things to all people in all markets to a very strategic, agile, and profitable company.”" https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1121379_gm-electric-vehicles-could-be-profitable-early-next-decade-says-ceo ARCIMOTO STARTS TAKING ORDERS FOR ITS THREE-WHEELED EV "Arcimoto has started taking orders for its three-wheeled electric vehicle. The Fun Utility Vehicle (FUV) Evergreen Edition will set you back $19,900 before tax credits and rebates, which is a far cry from Arcimoto's target of $11,900, though it aims to push down the price over time." reports Engadget: "Arcimoto plans to deliver 100 Evergreens by the end of June in Oregon, California and Washington. It will later expand delivery to other states, and hopes to fulfill all US pre-orders (more than 3,000 of them) by the end of June next year. It's requiring a non-refundable $5,000 deposit from anyone who orders one now. The Evergreen offers a 75 mph top speed and a range of 100 miles of city driving on a single charge" https://www.engadget.com/2019/02/07/arcimoto-fuv-evergreen-edition-orders-open/ KIA NIRO EV ELECTRIC CROSSOVER SELLS OUT IN UK: NEW DELIVERIES DELAYED "The number of e-Niro allocated to particular markets is limited while deliveries could be significantly delayed, according to the latest news In the UK, for example, the initial batch of 900 e-Niro was ordered within several weeks and customers probably will need to wait until the end of the year to order some from another batch (probably for delivery in 2020)." accrding to Mark Kane for InsideEVs. AutoExpress said: "“Deliveries for the new Kia e-Niro were supposed to commence in April. However, as a result of the e-Niro’s popularity and the production bottleneck, buyers who managed to snag one of the initial 900-model run may have to wait until the end of 2019 before taking delivery. John Hargreaves, Kia’s head of fleet and remarketing, said the battery pack supply chain issue is likely to remain “a restraining factor for at least another 12 to 18 months.”" https://insideevs.com/kia-niro-ev-e-niro-sold-out-uk/ KIA STUDY REVEALS FLEETS READY FOR EV TIPPING POINT Meanwhile, and you really couldn't make this up: "Demand for electric vehicles is reaching a tipping point for fleets, according to a new study by Kia. Furthermore, it seems as if public perspectives are also having a huge impact on fleet decisions, with 71 per cent of respondents saying that their organisation is nervous about purchasing a petrol or diesel car that isn’t EV/PHEV up five percent from the previous report." https://fleetworld.co.uk/kia-study-reveals-fleets-ready-for-ev-tipping-point/ DRIVENOW TO BOOST ELECTRIC CAR SHARING FLEET "Car sharing firm Drivenow has announced that 130 new BMW i3 electric vehicles (EVs) will be joining its London fleet. The company, owned by BMW Group, says the new i3s will join 50 older examples of the model until the latter are phased out in April." according to Business Car: "Drivenow says its aim is to have a fleet that is 80% electric by 2025. The new i3s - which offer a 160-mile driving range between charges - will take the company's total current fleet to 720 vehicles, operating in nine London boroughs: Barnet, Brent, Hackney, Haringey, Islington, Southwark, Tower Hamlets, Waltham Forest and Westminster. " https://www.businesscar.co.uk/news/2019/wc-feb-4/drivenow-to-boost-electric-car-sharing-fleet BMW 530E TOURING WAGON PLUG-IN HYBRID SPIED First up from InsideEVs a PHEV story: "BMW is working on a plug-in hybrid version of the 5-series Touring – the prototype was spotted during winter test runs. The lack of camouflage suggests that the market launch is close. It’s a smart move for the German manufacturer, as BMW 530e iPerformance is already the best-selling plug-in hybrid model for the brand." https://insideevs.com/bmw-530e-touring-phev-spied/ BMW I7 ELECTRIC WITH RANGE OF NEARLY 400 MILES IN THE WORKS And also: "One of the new all-electric models in BMW‘s pipeline is the BMW i7. That’s according to BMWBlog’s sources in Munich. There is no official announcement about the i7. However, at least the trademarks from i1 up to i9 were registered in 2012 and then renewed in 2018. It’s expected that the i7 could be an all-electric version of the next generation 7-Series. Furthermore, it’s believed that it will get an electric range of up to 600 km (373 miles)." COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Keep your comments coming in on email and YouTube… "Which incentives, beside those already available where you live, do want to see implemented by auto makers or dealers to help promote EVs?" Article Written By Caleb Wossen of The Dallas Observer: https://www.dallasobserver.com/arts/a-new-soccer-school-is-redirecting-the-focus-from-winning-to-technique-to-the-dismay-of-some-8951088 "Most training sessions for youth soccer feature a dozen or more players engaged in rigorous group exercises and fitness tests, mirroring the sport’s homonymous counterpart, football. Practice at Footy Factory, based in Addison, TX more closely resembles a martial arts or improv session. Players ranging from kindergartners to high school seniors scrimmage in groups of three or four per session and occasionally one is pulled aside to polish a flaw in technique. During these drills, little to no reference is made to games or competition. This is by design, says founder and CEO Sean Afkhaminia. The goal of Footy Factory is to revolutionize American youth soccer with training that is individualized and focused on developing specific skills by taking the focus and pressure off winning. “We’re trying to develop players, and no else is doing that [in Texas],” Afkhaminia said. “What’s going on in Dallas is that a lot of the big clubs will take parents’ money and put them on a team, they’ll practice twice a week for an hour, and then play a game on the weekend. It’s not enough. There’s no player development going on here.” Footy Factory is trying to work against the prevailing mindset that the purpose of playing team sports is to pad a resume for college. The attitude of Footy Factory's coaches recalls soccer clubs in Europe that incubate students for years without interruption. In conversation, Afkhaminia refers to his philosophy of passion trumping hard work. He insists that no person is born with natural talent, citing Daniel Coyle’s 2009 book The Talent Code. Afkhaminia specifically disagrees with the bias favoring athleticism and winning records over skill, and he wants Footy Factory to help eager, young players who lack the access or funds to continue developing their craft. Players train three times a week, while members of the club’s various teams practice twice a week and play a game on the weekend. As students grow older, the number of games played per week increases, but training is the highest priority. “Right now, individual training is always last,” Afkhaminia said. “It’s something that happens after their team practices and games, but that should be their main work so they can take what they know and apply it outside.” Jude Anuwe, who became a Footy Factory coach in early 2015, majored in biology and physiology at the University of Texas at Dallas. He's helped create a scientific foundation for the company's ethics and regimen. It's all rooted in proprioception or the science of body awareness in space. The plan is to mold players who are able to move more efficiently and better prevent injury. “Nowadays, you see a particular type of soccer player,” Anuwe said. “Guys pirouetting on the spot, overhead kicks — all of these skills are only mastered if you have a strong core, know where your body is in space, and master your balance. Can we move in a functional way?” Afkhaminia founded Footy Factory in late 2014 after graduating with a degree in business from West Texas A&M University. Feeling dissatisfied with the school’s soccer program, Afkhaminia briefly managed a soccer club before assuming coaching duties at Shelton High School, there realizing an idea that would evolve into Footy Factory. Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Tuesday 17th July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. NEWS IN BRIEF: Renault has confirmed the Australian dealers that will sell the Zoe EV, while the electric hatchback's list price of $47,990 before on-road costs has also been announced. Tesla is extending free unlimited Supercharging for Model S and Model X with referral program- but only for another two week A photo posted online showed the Performance Model 3 with 116MPGe, which less than the 130MPGe for the long range version Nissan's design boss Alfonso Albaisa has been talking about the next Nissan GT-R, and said the engineering team is still developing the basic architecture of the program, and debating how much electric assistance the powertrain will consist of, whether it will be a plug-in hybrid, a fully electric car or remain powered by a conventional combustion engine. FROM #1 CRITIC TO #1 FAN Sandy Munroe made a YouTube video of a first release Model 3 and didn’t hold back. Not a fan of the fit & finish [audio clip] But now having driven it, and taken it apart, someone has changed their tune. He raves about the electronics….[audio clip]…the batteries…[audio clip]…and he eats some humble pie…[audio clip] RUMOUR MILL: TESLA TO ADOPT CCS? Should we start with a rumour? I report on unsubstantiated rumours so little on this show but here's one that I've been asked about over the last few days, and then yesterday another thing crops up on Reddit, so let's speculate. So let’s start with Reddit: A German Tesla supporter named "Tesla Klaus" spoke to a Tesla technician during a Supercharger stop in Germany, who was at the Supercharger to replace two cables. However Tesla Klaus claims the engineer told hi, he's also doing preparations to add an additional cable to the Superchargers. Those additional cables will have CCS connectors (the chargers will have two cables, the existing Type 2 and then the new one with CCS Combo 2 plug). That's needed because the European Model 3 will have a CCS port. Cables and Connectors will be water cooled to support more power. Reservoir with coolant will be placed on top of chargers Here in Europe Tesla uses a slightly modified Type 2 connector for Supercharging. Tesla had to add the GB/T DC connector to S and X and did that by adding a charge port door, however the Model 3 charge port area is large enough to fit the Combo 2 connector. Japan favours CHAdeMO but Tesla doesn't support. However CCS Combo 2 can deliver charging up to 350kW, up to 1000v and 500A. In the European Union according to the Directive 2014/94/EU[26] all high power DC charging points set up after November 18th 2017 shall be equipped for interoperability purposes at least with Combo 2 connectors. Elon has hinted at Supercharger V3 in the past. There are screenshots of a Model 3 in factory mode which show that Model 3 is capable of DC charging with a higher rate than the current superchargers support. S & X will probably also support this once their battery setup gets an upgrade. ENGINEERING BOSS SAYS EVS "SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT TRANSFORMATIONS OF ALL TIME” "Joe Kaeser, global chief executive of the engineering giant Siemens, said up to almost a third of jobs could be lost as the transition from combustion engines to electric cars takes place over the next decade, in what will be “one of the single most important transformations of all time”. writing in today's Guardian newspaper Angela Monaghan: "Speaking over the weekend at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Kaeser said it would be a key challenge for industry leaders to build the car of the future responsibly and get the transformation right, because ultimately many traditional roles will disappear in the short-term." He says: "It may cause quite a dip in employment, because if you have 20-30 less value chain, then … you have 20%-30% fewer jobs. That is how it has been in the first three industrial revolutions. There has always been a significant change in employment. And then by enabling growth, it actually turned out that more jobs were created. Higher growth was achieved and obviously more people moved out of poverty and had better lives." https://www.theguardian.com/business/2018/jul/15/global-workforce-will-be-decimated-by-fourth-revolution-says-siemens-boss TESLA MODEL 3 ROLLOVER CRASH HAS A GOOD ENDING FOR THE DRIVER "Rollover accidents for electric vehicles are generally regarded to be rare. That’s mostly due to the fact that they have large and heavy batteries at the bottom of the vehicle, producing a low centre of gravity. Just last May, Tesla showed off how it tried to make a Model X rollover without success." reports JC Torres for Slashgear: "“I thought the car performed spectacularly from a safety standpoint. The driver seat airbags protected her during the roll including one underneath the steering wheel for her legs which I didn’t even know was there. As you can see from the photos the cabin was completely intact. The windshield and glass roof obviously shattered but they did not intrude into the cabin at all.”" Redditor StapleGun shared pics of his blue Model 3 whose front was pretty much totaled. Especially the driver side front wheel that hit the freeway median with such force that it sheared the wheel off. But the surprise was how the inside of the car was, for all intents and purposes, totally fine. https://www.slashgear.com/tesla-model-3-rollover-crash-has-a-good-ending-for-the-driver-15537706/ 20% OF PARKING SPACES SHOULD BE CONVERTED TO EV CHARGE POINTS "Local authorities should allocate one in five parking spaces to be converted into electric vehicle (EV) charge points by 2025 to prepare for the increasing uptake of zero-emission vehicles, a report has recommended." according to James Fossdyke for Motor1.com: "The National Infrastructure Commission’s study into the UK’s economic infrastructure says councils should turn five percent of parking spaces, including on-street spaces, into electric vehicle charging bays by 2020, before upping that to 20 percent by 2025." "The study also suggests regulating charging bays" https://uk.motor1.com/news/252353/parking-spaces-become-charging-points/ FORMULA E TEACHES CAR COMPANIES HOW TO MAKE ELECTRIC VEHICLES Forbes sat down with James Barclay, director for the Panasonic Jaguar Racing team, to talk about Jaguar’s involvement with Formula E and how the series will help the automaker continue to develop electric vehicles. "We’re already seeing real-world learnings from our activity in Formula E that apply to our production cars: the construction of some of the hardware items like the e-motors and inverter, the materials we use and the way we package them, the weight that we can achieve in the race car, how we maximize efficiency through software and control systems, how we optimize the whole powertrain, from the inverter to the e-motors. Fundamentally Formula E is about making cars go as fast as they can for as long as they can. From a production standpoint, that’s perfect because if you can achieve that in a customer car, it means the customer can drive longer and faster, too." https://www.forbes.com/sites/jaclyntrop/2018/07/16/formula-e-teaches-car-companies-how-to-make-electric-vehicles/#6ea9b33d1ae7 LAMBORGHINI AVENTADOR V12 HYBRID TO LAUNCH A GENERATION "Lamborghini will embrace electrification in its next-generation flagship supercar due early in the next decade, and in the models that will follow" reports Steve Walker for AutoExpress: "Plans are afoot not just for a V12 hybrid in the Aventador replacement that will come first but for a V10 hybrid in the next Huracan and a fourth Lamborghini model line could also be under consideration. The V12 hybrid Aventador replacement had already been confirmed to Auto Express by Lamborghini Research and Development boss Maurizio Reggiani back in January. An all-electric Lamborghini isn’t part of the firm’s immediate plans, but an EV is an option beyond the next generation hybrid supercar" Lamborghini CEO Stefano Domenicali: ""When we’re talking about performance, the killer of performance is weight. But the more you go for new technology the more you have to counterbalance to ensure you keep the weight under control." http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/lamborghini/102454/new-lamborghini-aventador-v12-hybrid-to-launch-a-generation-of-electrified-lambos LONDON'S BIGGEST ON-DEMAND CAR CLUB IS GOING ALL ELECTRIC "Zipcar announced today that it has started making Volkswagen e-Golfs available. Users will eventually have a pick of 325" reports the Evening Standard: "They will be available on Zipcar’s Flex 31p-per-minute package and have a range of 130 miles, suitable for short trips only. Some of the e-Golfs can be charged at the roadside, but most will be collected and taken to a “rapid charging station”. https://www.standard.co.uk/tech/zipcar-electric-fleet-lack-charging-points-a3886531.html AND FINALLY...DO YOU FANCY A JOB AT TESLA? Originally Aired October 2010 In his new book, WERE YOU BORN ON THE WRONG CONTINENT?, this week's guest, THOMAS GEOGHEGAN, makes a strong case that European social democracies - particularly Germany - have some lessons and models that might make life a lot more livable. Not only that, they could help us keep our jobs. In comparison to the U.S., the Germans have free university tuition, nursing care, and childcare. You've heard the arguments for years about how the wussy Europeans can't compete in a global economy. You've heard that so many times, you might believe it. But like so many things, the media repeats endlessly, it's just not true. According to Geoghagen, "Since 2003, it's not China but Germany, that colossus of European socialism, that has either led the world in export sales or at least been tied for first. Even as we in the United States fall more deeply into the clutches of our foreign creditors - China foremost among them - Germany has somehow managed to create a high-wage, unionized economy without shipping all its jobs abroad or creating a massive trade deficit,or any trade deficit at all. And even as the Germans outsell the United States, they manage to take six weeks of vacation every year. They're beating us with one hand tied behind their back."
(Originally aired 10-03-2010) We hear about the trouble Europe is in. The debt crisis in Greece and other countries, the mistaken austerity moves that have slowed recovery from recession. But while the bad news of the Euro crisis makes headlines in the US, what does not made headlines is the good news of a quiet revolution that has been taking place in Europe. The European Union, 27 member nations with a half billion people, has become the largest, wealthiest trading bloc in the world, producing nearly a third of the world's economy - nearly as large as the U.S. and China combined. Europe has more Fortune 500 companies than either the US, China or Japan. European nations are rated by the World Health Organization as having the best health care systems in the world. Yet they spend far less than the United States for universal coverage, even as U.S. health care is ranked 37th. Europe leads in confronting global climate change with renewable energy technologies like solar and wind power, conservation and "green design," creating hundreds of thousands of new jobs in the process. Europe is twice as energy efficient as the US and their ecological "footprint" (the amount of the earth's capacity that a population consumes) is about half that of the United States for the same standard of living. In his new book, WERE YOU BORN ON THE WRONG CONTINENT?, this week's guest, THOMAS GEOGHEGAN, makes a strong case that European social democracies - particularly Germany - have some lessons and models that might make life a lot more livable. Not only that, they could help us keep our jobs. In comparison to the U.S., the Germans have six weeks of federally mandated vacation, free university tuition, nursing care, and childcare.
