The Science of Happiness

Across school campuses and communities, students and educators are discovering how listening, curiosity, and everyday conversations can open pathways across differences and help restore a sense of shared humanity.Summary: How do we learn to truly communicate with people who are deeply different than us? In this episode of The Science of Happiness, we follow students and educators practicing the skills of empathy and courageous listening in classrooms and on the road. Their experiences reveal how intentional conversations can open unexpected pathways toward understanding and shared humanity. How To Do This Practice: Observe Before You Interpret: Spend a few minutes noticing the environment around you and ask yourself: What do people here see, hear, say, think, and need? Approach with Curiosity: Start with simple human connection—small talk, a question about their day, or genuine interest in their community. Signal That You're There to Listen: Make it clear your goal is understanding, not persuading, debating, or changing anyone's mind. Practice Democratic Listening: Give your full attention through eye contact, nodding, and brief acknowledgments, while resisting the urge to agree, disagree, or jump in with your own views. Stay Relaxed Through Discomfort: When differences emerge, maintain "relaxed awareness"—remaining open, attentive, and calm rather than defensive or reactive. Reflect and Learn: Afterward, ask yourself: What helped create connection? What got in the way? What might I try differently next time? In his revelatory book Original Love, Zen meditation master, award winning author, poet, and renowned spiritual teacher Henry Shukman, offers a tantalizing proposition. At any moment there is a powerful possibility available to us.One that involves piercing the illusion of separateness,And experiencing a deeper and more expansive sense of connection. In these moments which are deemed by some as ‘awakening'it can seem as if a spell has been broken. It can feel as though are waking up from a sort of dream as we see, feel, and know that there is in fact no separation. There are no borders. There is no “other.” At some level, everything and everyone are connected. Henry argues that these experiences can be the single most healing, positively life-transforming events that can happen to us. Well documented for centuries, across different wisdom traditions, and now explored through scientific research,Experiences of 'waking up' to our interconnected nature often lead to large positive shifts in our priorities. These moments often marked by a move from self-protection and self-promotion toward a natural flow of compassion and concern for others and the world. This boundless experience is what Henry calls Original Love. Today we decided to re-release this episode as part of our mini series on love. In this conversation, (originally published at the beginning of 2025), Henry and I will explore the possibility of Original Love. An experience that Henry beautifully reminds us becomes more likely  When we begin to:Allow whatever is arising in the moment to simply be as it is, Meet our lived experience with greater curiosity, presence, and love,And when we begin to loosen the grip of control as we learn to increasingly relax into uncertainty. For more on Henry, his books, teachings and live events, please visit henryshukman.com or check out The Way, his popular meditation app - which you can find at thewayapp.comDid you find this episode inspiring? Love can never be fully defined, but it opens the heart and evokes wholeness, as does the natural world, which is radically diverse.  Today, we are blessed to have with us two people  who not only possess strong intellects, but also have real world experience in nature. Their track record of doing good works in the world reveals their good heart. I invited these gentlemen in part because I have just released a book on Original Love: The Timeless Source of Wholeness, and I am excited to engage in dialogue with them on the subject of Love and the Wholeness of Nature.    Thomas Rain Crowe is the author of many books, most recently New Natives: Becoming Indigenous in a Time of Crisis and Transition, and most famously, his award-winning Zoro's Field, a partial tribute to Henry David Thoreau, documenting Rain Crowe's own retreat into the Appalachian woods.  An internationally recognized author, editor, and translator of more than thirty books, he became known first for being a member of the San Francisco Beat Generation of poets and creative folks living out there in the 1970s before returning to his native western North Carolina community and founding New Native Press. He has belonged to and worked with many environmental organizations. He is also a translator of some of the more renowned Sufi mystical poets, such as Hafiz and Kabir. Although not usually in his bios, I know he also resonates with the work of Meher Baba, another mystic explorer of love. Don Trent Jacobs (also known as Wahinkpe Topa, or Four Arrows, is a professor of educational leadership at Fielding Graduate, is a made relative of the Oglala Lakota and  member of the Medicine Horse Tiospaye. He is a pipe carrier, having fulfilled his Sun Dance vows while living on the Pine Ridge reservation and serving as director of education at Oglala Lakota College. Author of many books, including Restoring the Kinship Worldview and Teaching Virtues, both of which I have read, and numerous scholarly articles covering diverse topics in decolonization, counterhegemonic democracy, and Indigeneity. He has been endorsed by people like Gregory Cajete, Daniel Wildcat, Vandana Shiva, Bill McKibben. Thom Hartmann, and others, and is the recipient of a Martin Springer Institute Moral Courage Award for his activism on behalf of American Indians.  Glenn Aparicio Parry's latest book Original Love was published on February 13, 2026 and is available wherever books or ebooks are sold.

“Life and love are inseparable from each other,” said Meher Baba. Love, humanity, nature, and consciousness have co-evolved together.  Long ago, humanity was one with love, one with all of creation, then we separated, and ever since, we have been trying to merge with the Beloved. We developed rituals and ceremonies that brought us back into wholeness, but when these magical ceremonies decreased in power, we developed stories to foster our connection. The era of great myths began in goddess cultures, where the Divine feminine Face of God was most prominent. The Great Goddess was comfortable in all the realms: in the heavens, on Earth, and in the dark mysteries of the underworld. But with the rise of gods and heroes around the middle of the Bronze age, the masculine principle became elevated, and the feminine became suppressed and marginalized. While this has resulted in some important scientific innovation, it has also caused imbalances both to our world soul (Anima Mundi) and to the individual psyches of humanity. “What we are experiencing is tantamount to a shamanic dismemberment. We need to dismember in order to remember; we need to put ourselves back together again in ways that are healthy and whole. We are compelled to reconstruct the whole out of what has been torn apart; we are being called to dig deeper into our psyche. When we go deep, we find Indigenous and feminine wisdom—and original love— buried in the depths of our unconscious.” Today, we will freely discuss how we can recover and redeem the perennial wisdom of Original love, as well the wisdom of Indigenous peoples and the Divine feminine. We will also welcome whatever else wants to come forward into this sacred dialogue with our esteemed guests Anne Baring and James O'Dea.Anne Baring, who I was first introduced to by some of my most treasured women friends, has for the past half century been doing her utmost to recover and redeem the Feminine Face of God, initially inspired by a powerful dream she had (which she can share if she wishes today). A Jungian analyst, Anne is the author or co-author of nine books, including The Myth of the Goddess (with Jules Cashford), The Birds Who Flew Beyond Time (with Andrew Harvey) , The Divine Feminine (with Seilla Elworhty, and more recently The Dream of The Cosmos: A Quest for the Soul, and Divine Wisdom and the Holy Spirit: The Forgotten Feminine Face of God.     James O'Dea, who is the first person I gave my newly completed draft of a manuscript for Original Love to, is, similar to Anne, a long-term advocate for the awakening of soul, former president of the Institute of Noetic Sciences, the director of the Washington office of Amnesty International and the president of the Seva Foundation, and also the author of several important books, including Cultivating Peace, The Conscious Activist: Where Activism meets Mysticism, Soul Awakening Practice, and more recently some books with visionary artist Marika Popovits. When gratitude feels distant, gently notice what's here now— creating space for both heaviness and small moments of appreciation. How To Do This Practice: Get Comfortable: Sit upright or lie down. Whatever feels most supportive. Then soften your gaze or close your eyes. Take Three Slow Breaths: Let your body begin to settle. Feel the tension release a little more with each exhale. Notice How You're Feeling: Without changing anything, simply acknowledge what's present—tiredness, frustration, numbness, ease—whatever it is. Make Space for What's Hard: Recognize that the world can feel heavy. It's okay to hold grief, anger, or stress. You don't have to push it away. Gently Notice the Present Moment: Shift your attention to something neutral: your breath, your feet on the floor, the air on your skin. Just observe. Look for One Small Thing to Appreciate: Ask: Is there anything, however small, I can be thankful for right now? A warm cup of coffee, a slower breath, the fact that you showed up. Acknowledge What Happened: Silently say to yourself: “I acknowledge that I made this mistake.” Take a breath. Remember Your Humanity: Remind yourself: “I am human. Being human means I will sometimes fall short.” Offer Forgiveness: Place a hand over your heart (or somewhere comforting) and repeat: “I forgive myself for this. May I learn from it and move forward.” Close with Kindness: Breathe deeply. Once more, say: “I forgive myself. May I treat myself with kindness.”  Check In with Your Body Again: Notice if anything feels lighter or softer—maybe your breath, your shoulders, or your chest. Allow yourself to rest in that shift, however small. Take one final deep breath: When you feel ready, gently open your eyes and return to your day. In this guided meditation with poet and teacher Henry Shukman, learn how allowing discomfort, rather than resisting it, can open the door to greater calm and self-compassion.How To Do This Practice:  Find a Comfortable Position: Sit comfortably, either upright with your head balanced or reclining, and relax your jaw, shoulders, and hands. Invite Warmth and Softness into the Body: Gently bring awareness to different parts of your body—chest, belly, seat, legs, and feet. Imagine a gentle sweep of rest and quiet spreading through you, like a soft, warm wave. Notice Any Unease Without Trying to Change It: See if you can detect any subtle unease or restlessness. Instead of pushing it away, simply acknowledge it. Soften and Warm the Whole Torso: Move your awareness to the shoulders, sides, back, chest, and belly. Imagine each area softening like warm wax. Let this warmth frame your torso, surrounding even areas of tension or discomfort. Hold What You Find in Loving Awareness: Rather than trying to “fix” or remove unease, allow it to be held by your warmth and softness.  Return Gently: When you feel ready, slowly bring small movements back into your body. Open your eyes and notice your surroundings, carrying a sense of warmth and acceptance with you. I am excited to share this conversation with Henry Shukman, a Zen master in the Sanbo Zen lineage and spiritual director emeritus at Mountain Cloud Zen Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Henry is the co-founder of The Way meditation app and founder of the Original Love meditation program. He is the author of the books, Original Love: The Four Inns on the Path of Awakening and One Blade of Grass: A Zen Memoir, among other award-winning and bestselling books of poetry and fiction. He has taught meditation at Google and Harvard Business School and taught poetry at the Institute of American Indian Arts. His poetry has appeared in the New Yorker and the Guardian and his essays in the New York Times, Outside, and Tricycle. Henry has a master's degree from Cambridge and a master of letters degree from St. Andrews. As this biographical summary makes obvious, it's not like Henry hasn't been quite "discoverable", as a writer and meditation teacher but I only recently "discovered" him. And once I did, he has had a profound influence on me, as both a teacher and writer. In my conversation with him, I'll talk more about how I discovered him on Sam Harris' Waking Up app and how he became a primary teacher to me—even though we've never met—so stay tuned. In the conversation we talked about a wide range things, including: The "Four Inns on the Path of Awakening", the subtitle of his book Original Love (that is "Inns", as in lodging, or in this case, a refuge or shelter on the path of meditation): Mindfulness, support, absorption, and awakening. Meditation as a journey, or path, rather than an intervention—as Henry said, "a journey of a lifetime." Kensho or seeing the timeless, primordial or non-dual awareness that is the core of our very being. The importance of support in your practice, whether it is a teacher, community, or friend. Absorption or flow states in meditation.   And the "love" Henry refers to as something "endemic to our existence" … A great sense of belonging or union with everything. … And much more I know you will enjoy this conversation and Henry's clear, authentic, and gentle teaching style that I suspect will influence you, too, to bring more of Henry's guidance into your Dharma and meditation practice.

In part two of this deep conversation, two “happy” masters of meditation, Loch Kelly and Henry Shukman, explore a range of topics and questions through the lens of awakening as a natural human potential. What can we learn about how to shift into awake mind and heart to live with and recover from injury and long Covid? What is effortless focus and flow, aka Flow Know? And why is it so important for meditation and mindfulness practitioners to understand the distinctions between conventional mindfulness and more direct paths like Zen and Effortless Mindfulness? And finally, what are the benefits of new emergent spiritual models that integrate nondual mindfulness and Internal Family Systems? How does it work and how are models like this different from more traditional approaches to waking up and growing up? Loch and Henry Shukman engage with these questions and more.Part 1 RecapIn part one, Loch and Henry Shukman explore their similar and unique approaches to awakening. With delight and curiosity, they share some of their own initial awakening experiences. They also discuss their process of discovering and unfolding and how they share it with students. To this end, they unpack and illuminate the contemplative art and science of Inquiry and Koans as ways to shift out of the chattering mind and into our already awake heart mind. Henry talks about his experience with Zen Koans and Loch shares his Mahamudra approach to inquiry. Loch calls this Glimpsing, and it emphasizes immediate experiential pointers which help practitioners directly realize their already awake nature. Henry Shukman BioHenry Shukman is a meditation teacher, poet, author, and co-founder of the single-path meditation app The Way. Experience the physical sensations of love through this guided meditation that nurtures connection, relaxation, and emotional awareness. How To Do This Practice:  Sit or lie down in a relaxed posture. Close your eyes or soften your gaze. Take a deep breath in, then slowly exhale. Notice the weight of your body and release any tension in your shoulders, jaw, or hands. Recall a time when you felt deeply loved and cared for—whether from a person, pet, or a meaningful experience. Instead of focusing on the memory itself, notice where love manifests in your body—warmth in your chest, a tingling in your hands, a soft smile, or gentle relaxation. With each inhale, visualize love spreading through your body like a warm light or soft energy, filling your heart, arms, and entire being. Allow yourself to fully experience this embodied sense of love, knowing it is always within you. When ready, bring awareness back to your surroundings, wiggle your fingers and toes, and take a final deep breath before opening your eyes. If continuing, remain in stillness and deepen your awareness. When finished, bring small movements into your body, breathe deeply, and return to your surroundings with a sense of connection and calm. In his new book, Original Love, Zen meditation master, award winning author and poet, and renowned spiritual teacher Henry Shukman offers a tantalizing proposition. At any moment there is a powerful possibility available to us.A possibility of piercing the illusion of separateness,And experiencing a profound sense of connection. In these moments which are deemed by some as ‘awakening', it can seem almost as if a spell is broken. That we are waking up from a sort of dream. As we see, feel, and know (in our bones) that there is in fact no separation. That at some level everything and everyone are connected. Henry argues that these experiences can be the single most healing, positively life-transforming events that can happen to us. Well documented for centuries, across different wisdom traditions, and now explored through scientific inquiry,Experiences of waking up to our interconnected nature often lead to large positive shifts in our priorities. We tend to move from self-protection and self-promotion toward a natural flow of compassion and concern for others and the world. This boundless interconnected experience is what Henry calls Original Love. In today's conversation Henry and I will explore this possibility in depth,As we unpack what might lead us back to Original Love. Including practices we can bring into our lives, our work, and our relationships.Practices like :Letting goAllowing what's here to be here as it isLoosening the grip of control and learning to relax into uncertainty. And Henry will share some of his hard earned insight about meditation as a path toward greater wellbeing, connection, and awakening. Today, Michael welcomes Henry Shukman. Henry is a poet, author, Zen master in the Sanbo Zen lineage, and is the Spiritual Director Emeritus of Mountain Cloud Zen Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico. His new book, “Original Love: The Four Inns on the Path of Awakening,” about his unique approach to the path of meditation and spiritual awakening, is out now. Henry also created “The Way,” a new, first-of-its-kind meditation app that offers a single, long-term path into the deep end of meditation. Highlights from their conversation include: -Henry's childhood growing up in a climate of secrecy then learning later that his parents were Cold War spies -How Zen meditation allowed Henry to transcend his pain, trauma, and depression and regularly access a profound sense of oneness and love  -How awakenings from meditation don't always come as some “big cosmic phenomena,” but rather in small shifts that happen over time until you realize you've grown and healed  -Henry's recent bicycle accident and concussion that made him focus more on his heart because “being in his head” literally hurt too much, and how staying open-hearted is the way to being whole-hearted -The powerful effect of community on healing; the main tenets of his new book, “Original Love” and the ‘Four Inns' of awakening; his highly-rated new meditation app, The Way; and a whole lot more! Next, Michael concludes with a brief guided meditation.  Connect with Henry, discover his meditation app The Way, and get a free excerpt from his new book, “Original Love” at https://henryshukman.com/ and follow him on Instagram.      Remember to subscribe/follow and set an alert to receive notifications each Wednesday when new episodes are available!
