The About Face Theatre world premiere production of Gender Play, or what you Will is a tour-de-force for its co-creator and star Will Wilhelm, who transforms their own story as a nonbinary actor into a funny and powerful evening that's part seance and part dance party. Will shares their journey of discovery and how this play began as a thrown gauntlet; how Shakespeare's plays are fundamentally queer, and how Will found themself in them; the difficulty of parsing gender identity, gender performance, and cross-dressing; the importance of creating easy on-ramps to appreciating Shakespeare; and how Gender Play will continue to be a gift to future queer performers who can make it their own. This conversation was recorded in late May 2020, in the wake of the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and Tony McDade. We hold their families in our thoughts and wish for swift justice. We’ve attached links in this video and in its description to point you towards just a few of the many ways you can support Black lives, Indigenous lives, and people of color. We hope to not distract from the important work happening in our world, but ally it with light from artists, and to spread leadership and hope. We recognize and stand with the following organizations: Black Lives Matter, blacklivesmatter.com Black Visions Collective, blackvisionsmn.org/ NAACP Legal Defense Fund, naacpldf.org/ American Civil Liberties Union, action.aclu.org/give/now Recorded on May 28, 2020 The Drama League gathered the leaders of our nation’s top LGBTQIA+ theatre companies. The Drama League’s Artistic Director Gabriel Stelian-Shanks is joined by Megan Carney (About Face Theatre), Paul Conroy (Out Front Theatre Company), Philip Crosby (Richmond Triangle Players), John Fisher (Theatre Rhinoceros), Adam Odsess-Rubin (National Queer Theater), Michael A. 2-Minute Tip: Be Your True and Honest Self We talk a lot about authenticity because it matters. And while it may seem daunting, it can actually make things easier. When you don’t try to fake it, you don’t waste brain cycles and energy trying to maintain a façade. There are 3 questions to ask yourself when you prepare to talk to an audience: Who are you really? What do you have to offer your audience? What do you have to gain from the experience? Integrate this framework into your prep work to put yourself on the path to success. Post Tip Discussion: Meet Heather Vickery “Man up,” is a phrase I don’t like. Most folks understand it to mean that it’s time to just do something that’s hard or that you’re afraid to do it. But obviously, it’s sexist. It implies that being afraid to do things is womanly and doing the tough stuff despite fear is manly. I prefer the exhortation to, “Fortify!” instead of “man up.” Sometimes you do need to muster all your energy and willpower to accomplish something tough. “Fortify” captures that spirit without insulting a significant portion of your audience. I’m thinking about this today because today’s guest is host of The Brave Files podcast, personal coach, speaker, author, and musical theater enthusiast, Heather Vickery. Heather often finds herself telling clients, “So what? Do it scared.” Bio Heather Vickery is an award-winning entrepreneur, author, keynote speaker, business owner, and transformational coach. But Heather isn’t just a savvy businesswoman − she’s an inspiration. The founder of Vickery and Co., Heather helps organizations build an environment of honoring “The Whole Employee” so that they have empowered team members, happier clients, higher retention and make more money! Heather is a featured expert on achieving an authentic and meaningful life and designing your own roadmap for balance and success. A mother of four, Heather’s world turned upside down after a major life transformation and divorce, suddenly, she had the freedom to be her most authentic self. She discovered that this same authenticity empowered her with the confidence she needed to repair, rebuild, and reach her life’s vision and goals. Today, Heather leverages her entrepreneurial skills and expertise to coach individuals towards greater personal and professional fulfillment. Through her story of personal bravery, perseverance, and resilience, Heather inspires audiences and empowers attendees with the tools they need to live bold and meaningful lives. A strong believer in strengthening her community, Heather also serves as vice president for The Children’s School and as a board member for the About Face Theatre, Chicago’s premiere LGBTQ theatre. Heather is the executive producer and host of The Brave Files Podcast featuring real stories from people living courageously. Heather is the author of “Gratitude Journal: Shift Your Focus.” She works with people all around the globe to help them build Brave and empowered life’s. Heather’s Speaker Demo Books It’s great that I get to share Heather’s conversation this week. As I write this we are just a few days away from the Thanksgiving Holiday in the United States. Giving thanks and expressing gratitude is an important life skill, and on December 3, Heather can help with that. Heather’s new book, Grow Grateful: A Gratitude Journal for Kids and Families will be released on December 3rd. This book is designed to help you create intentional and impactful conversations with kids about gratitude. Doing so will lead to life-changing habits that increase their own happiness and wellbeing and give you delightful quality time together. The second edition of Heather’s earlier book, Gratitude Journal: Shift Your Focus is also available. This beautiful journal offers space to record gratitude, personal wins (high fives), and 180 unique prompts to help you connect with gratitude in unique and often surprising ways. What I think is important about these books is that the focus isn’t just on being grateful because it’s the right moral, ethical, or spiritual thing to do. Heather talks about gratitude as something that is good for you. It raises your spirits and helps you feel better. These can be great presents for various holiday events, or they can even help you kick start a gratitude practice for yourself or your kids as we approach the time for New Year’s resolutions. Delia Kropp, an actor, director, and transgender advocate joined Jill Hopkins in the studio to promote two projects essential to fighting back against the trans erasure begun by this presidential administration. TRANS SCRIPTS has its premiere Chicago reading, at Theatre Wit for About Face Theatre, November 18, at 5 pm. This is a rare stage event for Chicago audiences: seven trans women's tales told entirely in their own words – and brought to life exclusively by transgender actors. LANDLOCKED tells the story of Nick, who reunites with his estranged, transgender father to scatter his mother's ashes off the coast of Georgia. Set against the backdrop of the 2016 U.S. presidential election, LANDLOCKED subtly and thoughtfully examines the Evangelical church's tenuous relationship with marginalized communities as dramatized through the fraught family dynamics of Nick and Briana.

I also lost my wonderful Granddad who passed away at the beginning of May I'm looking forward to sharing about his life with you in future episodes - he has been a huge inspiration in my life. I'm think i'm going to start referring to him as the OM - the original multi-passionate! So, we're back, Monday episodes are back for good and I'm looking forward to working on some solo series and fun stuff to! For today's episode, I'm chatting to the fantastic Heather Vickery. In this episode we're really diving into what it means to give yourself permission, making more time for your creativity and choosing bravely, so if you need a good dollop of courage, this one's for you! During our conversation Heather shares her journey of being an entrepreneur for 23 years, her drive and passion for social justice and her experience of coming out to herself, her then-spouse and her wider friends and family. We dive into what it means to live outside your comfort zone, the difference between goals and commitments and the work Heather has done about boundaries - and why they make her so giddy! I love the conversation we had and the work Heather does with creatives to create more time and permission for their creative work. As a self-confessed type A, I can completely relate to the struggles of resisting systems and processes but also knowing I need them in order to do my best work, and I love Heather's work around this. This is a fantastically practical episode and if you struggle with giving yourself permission, staying stuck in your comfort zone or know that there's a bit change you want to make, this episode is for you. I absolutely loved chatting with Heather and am so excited about her recently launched podcast The Brave Files! I'm looking forward to chatting with Heather again as I'm going to be a guest on The Brave Files, and I can't wait to share another one of our conversations! You're going to need a notepad and pen for this one! Enjoy the show! I'm an INFJ creative and multipassionate who has a bit of a notebook and post-it note obsession, loves foot-stomping country music and likes her hot chocolate with way too much chocolate. I started Couragemakers because I wanted to create a platform for passionate and unconventional women to have honest conversations and to share their stories, struggles and dreams. The intention behind this podcast is to inspire and encourage creative and mission-driven women to live a wholehearted life and follow the beat of their drum. When I'm not recording episodes, writing bullshit-free, very vulnerable and encouraging Sunday emails to fellow couragemakers or making new friends with the wonderful guests, you can find me working on all manners of magic over at That Hummingbird Life. THL is the online home for unconventional creatives and multi-passionates who want to show up unapologetically and intentionally as who they are, and really own, live and share their many stories. It's made for couragemakers who have so much great shit to give the world and want to leave their mark but have too much self doubt standing in the way!

Actresses Delia Kropp and Penny Slusher join Gary and Frank in the Booth this week. Penny, a longtime favorite of ours, recently appeared in the Steppenwolf Theatre production of The Minutes, the new play from Tracy Letts. Delia was seen last season in a remarkable re-imagining of the Doug Wright play I Am My Own Wife at About Face Theatre, where the 30 characters were played by four actors rather than just one. Hers was a tour-de-force performance as Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, born Lothar Berfelde, who survived the Nazi and Communist regimes in East Berlin as a transgender woman, and the first time the role had been played by a transgender actress. Listen to hear the great story about how and why Delia proposed changing the way this Tony & Pulitzer prize winning play was presented. Penny talks about growing up in Bristol, Tennessee, the "birthplace of country music", and the one-woman show she is writing about her childhood experiences and the extended family that raised her. With a working title of "A Porch Song", Penny hopes to capture the essence of Appalachian Bristol and her amazing upbringing among an apartment building full of relatives. Including her Memaw, who was the best friend of Mother Maybelle Carter. Click on the Bristol link above to read about all the cool things happening there. Penny is an acting and auditioning coach with an approach that sounds like it would be not just effective, but fun too. She also does Intuitive Readings, using her innate gift for intuition and the things she learned watching her grandmother do "fortune telling." She is down to earth and positive about people's opportunities and challenges. If you'd like to schedule a session with Penny, go to www.pennyslusher.com and send her an email. Readings are usually done in her home, and she hopes you like cats (she has 2!). Delia speaks candidly about her gender transition, her 10-year hiatus from acting, and the types of roles and opportunities she is now pursuing. Having known Penny since 1991, Delia credits her with helping ease and facilitate her transition, particularly within the Chicago theatre community. The group discusses gender in casting. Here at Booth One, we wonder whether there might be a place for Delia on Amazon's Transparent alongside her friend, the brilliant Alexandra Billings. Delia is at work on an exciting web project to help trans and cisgender theater artists to meet. An online resource site for actors and other members of creative teams to learn about each other. Find out more about Delia on her website Therealdelia.com. Though we didn't talk about it on the episode, part of our Booth One research was to watch a great National Geographic documentary called The Gender Revolution. It is just excellent and we learned so much. Highly recommended! Kiss of Death: Mary Adelman, Fixer of Broken Typewriters, Owner of Osner Business Machines For decades, Mrs. Adelman's shop was an emergency room for typists with bent keys, problematic platens and ruined ribbons. She attended to the typewriters of Isaac Bashivas Singer, David Mamet, Nora Ephron, Philip Roth, Joseph Heller, Peter Shaffer and Murray Schisgal. The shop at 393 Amsterdam Avenue became an Upper West Side fixture in the lives of people desperate to keep the words flowing, and Mrs. Adelman was its centerpiece. "Every time you’d go there, it was always filled with people, that little shop — crammed with people,” one longtime customer, the playwright Peter Shaffer, the author of “Equus,” said in 2001. “It was like the cabin scene in ‘A Night at the Opera.’ You couldn’t get in the door.” She was 89.
